Forget the Flowers Friday Afternoon links

Welcome to the end of the week (and for some reason, a three day weekend for me). It’s looking to be a busy weekend for the girlfriend and me, as we’re hoping to hit up a local brewery for dinner tonight, we’ve got tickets for brunch on Sunday, and a nearby neighborhood is doing their annual ice festival.

I was living in Chagrin Falls, and I’m telling you, and I’m driving up hills, and going up what you perceive as mountains and it looks like wallpapers everywhere. I just wanted to take picture of the trees and the color. I wanted to take pictures of people’s houses, and all of this, but it’s only 90 days. Ninety days of your best weather ever.

–Jameis Winston on Cleveland.

Still been watching Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, three more episodes dropped. There’s finally some actual nefarious things being added to Norman, the Lonnie/Tombstone arc feels amazingly rushed (so far, with what they’ve done with the character, I feel like him joining the gang should have been over a full season, instead of one episode), the Doc Ock changes work for me, and they really trolled the comics geeks with several references. One that got me (and had the girlfriend laughing at my reaction) was Norman saying “With great power comes great responsibilitypect”.

In local news, Democrats introduce serious bill for serious problems.

I’m not sure if this is overreach, overdue, grandstanding, or something else.

Where’s my shocked face?

Based on the stories I’ve been seeing (and sharing), it looks like the publishers are not learning this lesson.

On the other hand, Valve really does seem to just be the good guys.

This may be of [more] interest to the authors around here.

Stop eating your soap.

Sorry, but this one is a bit of a nut punch. Intellectually, I knew things like this were happening, but it’s not really reported on here.

“…in bed”

We did have the C-Store here for a while.

Going back to the history books to bring something pre-prohibition back into your recent memories.

Clover Club

  • 4 part gin (2 ounces)
  • 1 part lemon juice (0.5 ounce)
  • 1 part raspberry syrup (0.5 ounce)
  • 1 egg white (or 0.5 ounce of aquafaba)

This one is another simple one, add the ingredients into a shaker, and dry shake (no ice) for 10-15 seconds. Add ice, and shake until chilled and integrated. Double (or single) strain into a chilled coupe/cocktail glass, and garnish with some raspberries if you want to be fancy. A standard variant on this is to swap out the raspberry syrup with some grenadine (or any other fruit syrup).

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, if you so desire.

One that got me (and had the girlfriend laughing at my reaction) was Norman saying “With great power comes great responsibilitypect”

That sounds more like something Otto would have said when he was in Peter’s body (that was a story arc at some point, right… I’m not going mad more than usual?)

    • Nephilium

That would be the Superior Spider-Man.

      • SDF-7

As long as they didn’t go “Hentai Tentacle Mary Jane Parker”, it probably was an interesting one. Certainly made enough waves even a non-Marvel guy heard of it.

I know, right? Who could have seen this coming with China being such a strong proponent and respecter of IP rights over the last 3 decades…. Ya think you know someone….

    • Sean

Yet, no info on how to get pirated media. 🙁

    • rhywun

Yeah, I tapped out at “China”.

Which means “CCP” which means rogue state. If the rest of the world wasn’t so addicted to their cheap slave labor you’d think it would have had enough of their shit already.

  4. SDF-7

Based on the stories I’ve been seeing (and sharing), it looks like the publishers are not learning this lesson.

To be fair — much like Bugthesda, the Civ games have been feature-lacking and buggy on launch until at least the 2nd big feature DLC for at least 3 releases now (I think IV was okay at launch… but it has been a while.. it predated the modern time of “we’ll patch it after we ship it!” so that doubtless helped). That isn’t why I have no real interest in VII — much more to do with my frustration at the game/balance choices they consistently make (I like huge maps and not to have the AI right next to me all the damned time… the eXplore part of the game still matters to me — and they prefer to let the “I see the whole map and can beat you to anything interesting unless you find me and go to war right off!” AI do that as one big reason… the whole “your civ is only in an age, changes when ages change — oh, and we’ll rubber-band the AI at each age start so your lead is irrelevant!” as I understand the mechanics is another…)

    • rhywun

I don’t play AAA games so I mostly avoid this issue. The small handful that land in my Steam library are usually five or six years later and more than 50% off.

I mostly play “indie” games and 20 bucks is a lot for me.

    • Rat on a train

In the old days patching wasn’t a thing so games had to be complete. Now they send out a beta, patch as they go, and DLC the shit out of it to keep the money stream flowing.
I don’t mind DLC for cosmetics, music, etc. But many games have key features as DLC.

      • rhywun

The main reason for this phenomenon is to offload the cost of beta testing. Why pay for it yourself when you can make your customers pay for it??

  5. SDF-7

On the other hand, Valve really does seem to just be the good guys.

Now I really, really wish they could pry Solitaire and the like from MS’s evil hands. “Let’s make the standard time wasters that have been part of Windows since 3.1 at least into mobile-wanna-bes so we can shovel MORE ADS at our paying customers!” Assholes.

Good on Valve though…. I haven’t encountered one that tried yet (my tolerance for EA sports games is limited to F1 mainly before they bought Codies… and since they started really messing with it in 2023, I’m just playing the older titles anyway).

    • rhywun

I solved that by just buying a better Solitaire suite (Mah Jong too).

watch this ad to play the game

I wish pay television would hear this message.

    Stop eating your soap.

    Um… yeah…

the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Maybe DOGE should swing by there and remind them that soap is not Food?

The beef tallow products contain a nutrition facts label, leading people to believe that the product is safe for human consumption.

Let me guess — said label is required for anything that might be construed as food by said FedGov? (And we call these people: “Idiots” who would believe that soap is for human consumption.)

Reeks of the whole “nice company ya got here… just got to let us get our beak wet and ‘inspect’ you or we’ll just have to shut you down” to me…

His “English Language Unity Act” would call for all official U.S. government functions to be conducted in English and require U.S. citizenship applicants to demonstrate the ability to read and understand the English language.

To what level is the question.

I’m perfectly OK with the state not putting out documentation in anything but English, but I know plenty of 2nd generation immigrants with parents that barely speak English that are/were currently productive citizens.

    • rhywun

I’m perfectly OK with the state not putting out documentation in anything but English

This. Imagine the cost savings of not having to print every document or supply interpreters for a hundred different languages anymore.

The only objection to this idea is from people who want to cause chaos. I used to be in the “overreach” camp but I’m leaning more toward “overdue” these days.

    • R C Dean

I didn’t get the impression that they were going to outlaw speaking or writing in anything but English, just require that all communication from (and to?) the government be (solely?) in English. Which I’m kinda in favor of. Also, getting rid of the requirement that some businesses have to have translators on call in dozens of different languages would be nice. They can if they want to, of course.

You want to live in America? Get going on your English lessons, or expect to have some difficulties. I think having a country where everybody can speak to everybody else is better than one where they can’t.

    • Rat on a train

Is English not a citizenship requirement? My wife had a conversational English test with INS when getting her citizenship.

    • rhywun

To what level is the question.

The article mentions several countries that have official languages. I would suggest looking at Germany or France and do what they do.

The reason we don’t, of course, is because we are held hostage by the same leftist thought around rAcIsM and xEnOpHoBiA that has been doing so much damage for so many decades.

So, after Pie made me aware of the SciFi cancellation kerfuffle last week, I bought Devon Eriksen’s Theft of Fire, and am enjoying it. Eriksen is a libertarian, and the book was a finalist for the Prometheus award for libertarian scifi.

    • SDF-7

I bought it too — but I’m still re-re-re-re-reading Jack Campbell’s Pillars of Reality at the moment because it is the literary equivalent of a warm fuzzy blanket and a cup of cocoa with marshmallows… once I get through those I’ll go read that one.

    For some values of “care”

Those immediate impacts were a main focus of the hearing Thursday afternoon, when Hurson repeatedly asked attorneys on both sides to discuss the risks associated with allowing Trump’s orders to take full effect and continue limiting health care access. Hurson directly challenged the assertion that the president’s goal is to protect transgender youth.

“The order seems to deny that this population even exists, or deserves to exist,” Hurson said, noting that transgender people already face a statistically elevated risk of suicide, poverty, addiction and other hardships.

Disrupting their health care out of the blue could cause them “irreparable harm,” the judge said in announcing his ruling.

    Strict impartiality, based on science.

    • R C Dean

I’m not hearing much about the judge’s legal authority to substitute his judgment on risks and benefits for the President’s.

    • rhywun

transgender people already face a statistically elevated risk of suicide, poverty, addiction and other hardships.

This person asserted, with no evidence whatsoever.

I think if I was feeling suicidal and somebody suggested I cut my dick off I might just question their fucking sanity.

  12. The Late P Brooks

Attorneys for the government argued that Trump, through his orders, was simply directing federal agencies to take lawful steps to carry out his policy preferences. They said the orders weren’t aimed at restricting health care access for transgender youth, but rather a decision from the president on how his administration would distribute federal funding.

But the plaintiffs’ attorneys said the orders are “unlawful and unconstitutional” because they violate antidiscrimination laws while infringing on the rights of parents.

Free unlimited medical treatments are a human right!

    • Sean

    • R C Dean

      “they violate antidiscrimination laws”

The ones that outlaw discrimination on the basis of sex, and make no mention of gender preference at all? The ones where attempts to amend the laws to include gender preference have failed?

      Those antidiscrimination laws?

I’m not going to watch the whole thing now but it’s interesting. I assume he’ll get around to explaining how it provides a useful advantage. I can’t help thinking of that monkey motion Nissan variable compression nightmare.

    • Sensei

You get 2 power strokes in 6 cycles as compared to 1 in 4 with a four stroke. So theoretically 1/3rd more efficient.

However, comparing similar sized 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors in reality the 2 stroke is 20-25% more efficient. So realistically 20-25% increase in power for the same displacement.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Variable compression? Why, that is almost like a V16 Cadillac!

      • Sensei

        https://www.nissan-global.com/EN/INNOVATION/TECHNOLOGY/ARCHIVE/VC_TURBO_ENGINE/

It’s adds a bunch of components and mass to the bottom end of the motor. Technically it does work, but it seems like it’s not worth the complexity trade off. Nissan came up with it to meet emissions before everybody else moved to direct injection which is much cheaper even with the carbon build up issues. Those can be eliminated with dual injection or simply required maintenance.

  15. The Late P Brooks

Speaking of Nissan, a clickbaity youtube about them dropping CVT popped up yesterday. Did not click.

The US vice-president, JD Vance, has launched a brutal ideological assault on Europe, accusing its leaders of suppressing free speech, failing to halt illegal migration and running in fear from voters’ true beliefs.

In a chastising speech on Friday that openly questioned whether current European values warranted defence by the US, he painted a picture of European politics infected by media censorship, cancelled elections and political correctness.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

They still pretend. Every argument for free speech has a but attached.

And of course all of those “buts” are contra to the idea of free speech on any level. Yes, we believe in free speech so long as it isn’t “far right” speech. Same way they believe in free elections. So long as their guy wins everything is okay. If someone from the wrong party wins, however, they need a do-over.

What a great speech. Western Europe can fix itself or we’re going to cut them loose.

I’ve heard people predicting that we’ll be allies with Russia in less than a decade. Once you cut through the neo-con propaganda, we probably have more in common with them than the western Euros.

They are going bluster, seethe, and fail for a while over this.

      • SDF-7

Maybe — I would have heartily agreed with you more in the ’90s… but while I certainly think their support for the Orthodox Church and more traditional values is good, they’ve got one hell of a corruption problem and a love of despotism at their core. I’d hope for friendlier relations — but I think allies would be too strong.

Until the recent EU friendly party just happened to get elected in Poland (have to wonder about USAID there, let me tell you), I would have thought they would lead a break out of Eastern Europe and that bloc would be more our speed than Russia per se.

We’ll just see what happens, I suppose — but certainly I’m in favor of telling the current EU / UK assholes to jump in the Pond.

      • Ted S.

Depends on your income, of course. There are many nice sections of Philly – downtown and elsewhere – where you can live better than in Manhattan or Brooklyn and for half the money. There’s a lovely 5 story brownstone mansion, in decent repair, for sale on Rittenhouse Square, the toniest neighborhood in Center City, with a garage, and it’s been sitting there unsold at $5.3 million for years. Cannot comment on filth and homeless maniacs because I’ve nothing to compare it with. Last few times I was in Philly, I had an 18″ bayonet strapped to my belt so didn’t really feel unsafe.

Unemployment is entering its ninth week and Dad is having his first knee replacement next Friday. No news yet from Aldi, Walmart nor Kroger. More concerning is my general off-ness. I feel ‘there’ mentally, nothing noticeable, but my left hand’s tremors are fiendish. Nothing in my right hand, which is good, all things considered. My heart is going a bit strong; kinda odd seeing your pulse flex your wrist.

I am decisively not a fan. Sorry, I’m a bit dour. I hope everyone has a lovely evening with your loved ones, perhaps with a chance to enjoy the 3-day weekend. Parents snowbirded in FL and were in Seaside for a bit. We may watch The Truman Show tonight, which was filmed in the “master-planned community.” Tremendous film. Laura Linney is perhaps my favorite actress. I’m still upset I haven’t seen The Man on the Moon. It’s rather hard to find.

    • Mojeaux

Evan, I hesitate to bring this up, but have you ever thought about applying for disability? I was telling my husband about your afflictions and adversities, and it occurred to me that maybe disability is your best course of action, at least for now.

      • Evan from Evansville

No hesitation necessary! I have, but it was shockingly difficult, especially as The Incident was in Thailand. I *did* just apply again. Thank you, even if stating the obvious. I frequently need to be reminded ‘where I am’ inside my brain. (<– Actually not terribly common, but today has been 'stressful.') I still feel kinda punch-drunk from last Fri's seizure. Not so much the physical/mental effects, though today I do, but it's kinda like my brain is still just exhausted from it.

Still bruised and sore, but *fuck* my tongue is raw. Kinda gnawed a part of it off. That constant, painful reminder is a mind-fuck, completely unrelated to the Helen of Troy variety. I'm apparently to call and "speak with a representative from Hensley Legal Group, PC." I am unsure of how that'll go. They asked if I "expect to be disabled for 12 months," which is a requirement. I would be infinitely better off working, but I can't just wave a wand.

If anyone has any experience, I'd love and appreciate any info/insight. I'm not sure if there's anything I can really prepare for 'em. I suppose I have most of my medical stuff. I'm not sure exactly what to expect. Freely admit: Not knowing about shit beforehand is a really good way to stress me out. Everyone has long known to *NEVER* surprise me, perhaps especially a surprise party. Known unknowns aren't pleasant.

        Y'all, legit, are the best.

The only thing I know about getting disability is it takes a few appeals and a sketchy doc who will sign off on anything.

There are other ways. But I wouldn’t exactly wish them on anyone.

ZWAK operation house sit status update: I am being relieved (hopefully) in a few hours, as the WIFE is coming to take my place for a few days. Which is good, as I am out of beer, beef, and have watched ALL of the porn. And I made a mistake in my description of this abode; it isn’t your G-moms, it is your spinster aunt’s swinging bachelorette pad. You know the one, she never quite settle down with a fellow, but loves her stuff, has a place for everything and everything is in its place, she is a little bit goth bohemian, is aging well in some aspects (good job) but not in others (lonely), talks your ear off about things you don’t care enough about to give good answers back but wish you could, has a couple small dogs one of which is dying but taking it well, and is always trying to stay “cool” on the music front.

All in all, your cool, weird aunt who you like.

You may have watched all of HER porn, but not all of THE porn.

Maybe there’s a universal subscription with dozens of monitors playing multiple streams simultaneously? Don’t underestimate the cool aunt.

I swear I’m not your spinster aunt but it sounds like I could be.

If your aunt had balls she’d be Rhywun?
