IFLA: The “Recommend a Gun for UCS” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of March 23

If it doesn’t use grip panels, you can’t have custom grips made. (GlibGrips by lokgrips.com)

From Wednesday:

I already know what my first two pistols must be. I know Not Adahn wants me to get a CZ for #3, but I’m open to recommendations. Whatever #3 is, it’ll be a competition gun, for shooting sports, and has to fit an optic.

While UnCiv is correct about my recommendation, I’d like to go a bit further and explain why my recommendation is obviously the best one for a new-to-gofast shooter,

  1. Reliability. I do approximately zero maintenance on mine. I clean it a couple (as in twice) a year. Its malfunction rate currently stands at %. However, I will say that I believe part of that is because it is in constant use. If I were to store it for six months at a time it might very well require cleaning/lubrication more often. I base this on the fact that my other guns which are supposedly equally as reliable are not even close, but also have <10% of the trigger time as my main gun.
  2. Tinkerability. Should you enjoy the fiddling around for upgrades that manifest themselves almost purely psychologically, the CZ75 platform has extensive history and support among tuners.
  3. Shootability. This is where the CZ75 platform comes ahead of the also reliable and tinkerable Glock platform. It’s steel, and it uses grip panels so that one’s hand geometry can be easily catered to. Also the trigger, though to be fair I find very little about trigger matters in practical on-the-clock accuracy, and my splits aren’t yet fast enough to make full use of the shorter reset that I have. My particular CZ has awesome undercuts and excellent checkering, though my hands are not your hands.

So, surely there are enough FanGlibs of different brands out there to make the case for their favorite brands. I expect to read the case for SIG and S&W at least, maybe a Walther Glib out there? And H&K fans are delusional enough that they probably actually believe their own nonsense. (((IWI)))? (((Bul)))? I have been told that the latter makes excellent 1911s.

As to the horoscope: I don’t want to be The Glib That Cried Disaster* but, how can I put this?

On that day, not only do we have Venus Retrograde and MERCURY RETROGRADE, but the moon as an amplifier AND Saturn, the Grim Reaper lining up.

Some MERCURY RETROGRADE dubstep for you:

This week has a lot of problems related to money — not having enough, or misusing what you have. Otherwise, the cards are agreeing that this is an AMAZINGLY shitty week.

Aries: King of Coins reversed – Vice, weakness, ugliness, perversity, corruption, peril.

Taurus: 8 of Coins reversed – Voided ambition, vanity, cupidity, exaction, usury.

Gemini: 9 of Swords –  Death, failure, miscarriage, delay, deception, disappointment, despair.

Cancer: The Hierophant reversed – Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness.

Leo: Ace of Coins reversed – Problems caused by money. Either yours or someone else’s.

Virgo: The Tower – Bad. Really bad.

Libra: Page of Swords reversed – – Backstabbing little fucktard. Metaphorically speaking.

Scorpio: The Star reversed –  Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.

Sagittarius: Two of Swords – Merciless, immune to reason, stubbornness in opposition.

Capricorn: 8 of Swords reversed –  Disquiet, difficulty, opposition, accident, treachery; what is unforeseen; fatality.

Aquarius: Ace of Wands reversed – Like the Ace of Coins reversed, but instead of “money,” substitute “penis.”

Pisces: King of Swords reversed – Cruelty, perversity, barbarity, perfidy, evil intention.

    Pistol- a .45acp 1911 with a .22lr conversion top end.

Problems caused by money. Either yours or someone else’s.

    Sounds sufficiently shitty.

For UCS’s next gun, go old school. This might or might not be a serious recommendation.

    • UnCivilServant

That’s too old school. I do like cartridges over flintlocks.

Pistol #2 is supposed to be a revolver that takes .38 Special. Whether it also takes .357 is up for discussion.

      • Sean

Unless you’re buying a tiny j frame for carry, I have no idea why you wouldn’t go .357.

      • UnCivilServant

It is my intended carry. I worry about the “judged by 12” situation, the impression of a “357 magnum” on the average hoplophobic idiot caught up in jury duty.

  5. EvilSheldon

A competition pistol? What games and what divisions?

    • UnCivilServant

I have no idea, In that matter, I am also open to recommendations for filthy casual beginners.

  6. Gustave Lytton

maybe a Walther Glib out there?

Sadly Walther is ditching the best pistol they’ve made in recent times.

I never liked the M9/92FS because it was too chunky compared to a 1911. But it’s quite a pleasant shooter. Never had problems with jams (like the Kimber officers model I ended up selling). Really should pick up some more: Cheeta, Bobcat, PX4 subcompact before stock dries up completely, PX4 compact concealed carry. Was too slow on an ARX100.

    • Sean

      Px4s sub/compacts deserve more love.

      • Gustave Lytton

Sun was apparently discontinued in 2023. ☹️

From the ded thred, I have no problem with non-citizens who espouse my own views getting deported either. How fucking hard is it to lay off of politics and shit stirring period when you’re on what should be a probationary period? If went to Merry Olde England and started publicly denouncing Charles as an inbred shitbird, I’d expect to be on a flight home post haste.

    • Jarflax

I am also ok with this, but more importantly I don’t think there is any juice left in the idea of our side honoring the idea of neutral procedural rules because otherwise the other side will be free to dishonor them when they are in power. They have been dishonoring and manipulating procedural rules longer than I have been alive, all that happens when we honor them is that we guarantee that the ratchet continues dragging the window leftward. We aren’t living in a free Republic and damaging the underlying values by bending or breaking the rules of the society. We are living in a Republic that is at death’s door because the left has already bent and broken those rules out of all recognition.

      • R C Dean

As I keep saying “Nobody ever won a war by unilaterally disarming”.

“Ermagerd, if we deport this guy for lefty badthink, the Left might suddenly wake up and realize they can deport immigrants for righty badthink!” Like that wouldn’t happen if the normies didn’t go first.

  8. EvilSheldon

”The 29th of March is the worst, most ominous sign I’ve seen in my entire astrological career.”

Huh. That’s my best friends’ birthday. I’m supposed to help him set up his new reloading press, then we’re going to see Cirque du Paranormal that evening. This should be fun.

  9. Gustave Lytton

Also from ded thred, Tekton is owned by the Amash family. Still good tools, great customer service from all accounts, very transparent on tool origin, and make a bunch of their stuff in the US.

she doesn’t have enough to pay for out-of-pocket care. I have a bad feeling at that point everyone will look to you to come up with the money

She lives with me now, and I do the work, which isn’t that much since she got out of skilled nursing. The goal is to get her her own apartment (in a regular apartment complex) and her pay for a cleaning service and maybe still be receiving home health, as she is now, but I imagine I’ll still be going over frequently or she’ll stay with me or she’ll have to come back home with me.

That said, I jumped the gun on my assumption that she went around me. The lawyer emailed her directly (can’t blame him; she IS his actual client), and she forgot to talk to me about it because she didn’t understand what he meant. Hell, I don’t, either, so I’ll email for clarification.

Susie wants the lawsuit to go away because it “makes her nervous.” Yes, Susie. I meant to do that. If it makes you that nervous, you’ll do what you’re told.

    • R C Dean

I was thinking more, if/when she needs assisted living/skilled nursing and somebody needs to pay the freight for the place she will need to move to.

Gemini: 9 of Swords – Death, failure, miscarriage, delay, deception, disappointment, despair.

I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

  15. Beau Knott

I’m hoping this “Cancer: The Hierophant reversed – Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness.” is as accurate as last week’s was.

Herewith, doxxing myself with the link to my GoFundMe. The Thanksgiving through New Year’s battle with atrial fibrillation nearly depleted my (limited) reserves. Now I’m facing hernia surgery and some unexpected, and expensive dental work. Getting old sucks, especially when you’re poor 🙁

    https://gofund.me/53ac5d42

Thank you all for this gathering place!

    • Sean

      Yikes.

    • slumbrew

      Done.

      Speedy healing!

    • Beau Knott

The finest people around! I’m humbled by the almost immediate outpouring of generosity. You folks rock!

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Will $1600 be enough?

      • Beau Knott

Well, the total I’m going for is $2500 — GFM “helpfully” lowers the initial ask than raises it as donations come in. I wish they were more transparent about this; back when I had disposable income I was often taken aback by the appearance of the requester bumping the ask as they saw success. It’s been GoFundMe and their algorithms 🙁

Given the ridiculous state of American medicine, it’s effectively impossible to find out in advance what a procedure like laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair will actually cost. Then there are the ancillary expenses, like meds & tests. Those are what killed me on the cardio procedure. I thought all was good, then another $500 of bills came in 🙁
So, I honestly don’t know if $1600 would suffice or not.
I’m exploring other options (e.g, the surgeon and dentist both offer payment plans). I trust the surgeon, and mostly trust the hospital. The dentist, not so much.
But every bit helps, and I’ll make do as need be, regardless of the GFM total.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Want to go to OKC? Perhaps it’s not feasible.

Thanks, Virgo. Shareholders and Directors Meetings tomorrow about future of our company totally dependent on Canadian raw materials. Then later in week checkup on my faulty eyeball.

Box Office (Sunday Update): Rachel Zegler’s Snow White Blows Away Competition In Its Debut Weekend (But Where Does It Stand Against Other Disney Remakes?)

By all accounts, Snow White is getting bad reviews and dismal box office numbers. But the weekend was horrible for all movies, so the headline showing on Google News can be both true and totally misleading.

    • Gender Traitor

What’s that we’re always saying about “technically correct”?

      • UnCivilServant

That it makes a fun joke?

“Taurus: 8 of Coins reversed – Voided ambition, vanity, cupidity, exaction, usury.”

Uh. Huh. Pretty much the opposite. I *should* be getting paid by Walmart for the first time on Thurs. No “exaction,” but rather well-earned. Will be my first check since mid-Dec, which is nice, cuz I ran out of My Money a week ago.

Sunday morning is the chillest of chill times in the store. Just as with phlebotomy, I regularly am surprised at how much time has elapsed since my last peek. It is a fascinating, modern variation of factory work, but that’s exactly what it is. Fairly phenomenal, is what it is.

Looks like the rehab from my conscious-sedation opp on April 23 will require a few days. Maybe a week+. I put time off for the day, but I haven’t told ’em anything. Uh – I’m worried / interested in what happens if this qualifies as a Workplace Accident or Injury. I’m guessing this wouldn’t be a workplace thing if I told the truth. None of it may matter. I won’t be on Walmart’s insurance until June.

Schemingly stupid, I’m fantasizing of ways I can play this to maximize the situation to my benefit. Any thoughts or insight?

A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself: will this get me fired?

I confess I have not always followed that rule.

  23. R C Dean

My vision finally cleared up enough to shoot again (first time in a year and a half). Took the HK VP9 that Mrs. Dean gave me for Christmas to the range. (She has one too, which I’ve handled but never shot.)

Holy crap, what a nice gun. Very accurate, cycled flawlessly, felt good in the hand – nice and solid. Mine is out-of-the-box (I did put a Holosun on it). The trigger was pretty nice – very little stack or creep. Mrs. Dean has had some trigger work done on hers – short reset, general upgrade – and it breaks like the proverbial glass rod.

    Can recommend.

I know that my post are some of the most compelling, droll, and/or poignant comments made on this site and that may be why one would be mistaken to think that I “constantly” ‘hang out’ : however I only make a handful of comments each week. I have far more important things to do.
