¡Martes por la tarde, enlaces mexicanos!

by | Mar 11, 2025 | Daily Links | 98 comments

Unfortunately, I have a rather packed martes in store, so while you get the gif, you don’t get an intro. Them’s the breaks. I know you’re literally shaking right now.

¡Enlaces!

I suppose that’s one way to spin it, here is another way.

The Dixie Bay pissing contest continues.

The Pope resembles the Demon possessing him, but is technically still alive.

Flooding in Argentina kills dozens. Okay we can be precise here: 16.

I haven’t seen NPR in my search results recently. Maybe they’re funded by USAID. Regardless here’s one I missed. The Orange Man cuts off an oil export license to Venezuela. Apparently, that really sucks for them.

Here’s a classic 90’s tune. Yes, the 90’s were 30 years ago and therefore “classic”. Have a great Tuesday!

Doesn’t “dozens” have to be at least 24? Sixteen is just a dozen and change.

On Sunday evening, the Vatican said the Pope had joined what were described as “spiritual exercises” for senior Catholic clerics via video link, although the Pope himself was not visible.

“Not visible”? Let the conspiracy theories start!

That my daily driver, solid-as-a-rock 2003 Monte Carlo could be registered with “antique” plates in 3 years in Georgia amuses me.

California says “at least 25 years old” but also says “Of historic interest” — so I expect they’d shoot the poor Monte down on that principle.

Was supposed to be before that if I didn’t just screw up tags massively (and not just the DMV ones, it seems!)

Sheinbaum said the renaming is “incorrect,” adding that Trump’s decree “only changed the name within his own continental shelf, which extends 22 nautical miles from the US coast—not the entire Gulf.”
Trump routinely breaks people. It’s impressive.

    • rhywun

      It is.

I wonder where she is going to take him to court. Some friendly anti-Trump judge in DC will no doubt rule in her favor.

It will be amusing when every other tyrant around the world insists we use their language for everything.

The Southeast China Sea, here we come!

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I don’t really understand the point of renaming it unless it is only to troll the Year 0 people who wanted to rename everything, in which case it’s kind of funny, but also a waste of time.

      • Raven Nation

I’m guessing it was one of those Trump brain fart’s that he then becomes incapable of acknowledging as misspoken.

      • Rat on a train

It was petty, but the reactions are worse. Ignoring or a simple “That’s dumb, but whatever.” would have been better.

      • KSuellington

I’d heard somewhere that Biden’s decree before he left limiting drilling in the Gulf of Mexico didn’t apply to the Gulf of America. Have no idea if that’s true or if Trumpy just got a notion one day that it should be the GofA.

      • trshmnstr

unless it is only to troll the Year 0 people who wanted to rename everything, in which case it’s kind of funny, but also a waste of time.

It’s this, with a heaping helping of “let’s get some precedent we can use to shut this down when the left does it” and some “anything to flood the zone”

      • Suthenboy

Having a cat chase a laser is pointless and dumb but it can be quite amusing.

      • Spudalicious

What was he doing while everybody is whipped was over “Gulf of America”? He’s a master at creating distraction.

      • R C Dean

        I suspect it was trolling.

And if the authority to name something extends only to the continental shelf (or whatever), then who has authority over the rest of the Gulf? I haven’t read the EO, but I suspect it was basically, “Here in America, we will call it the Gulf of America”. The Mexicans can, of course, call it whatever they want. And I’m not sure where the Mexican government gets the authority to order Americans (including American companies), to call it anything.

      • Rat on a train

        https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) is a Federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government.

The BGN maintains official US government names. Its authority covers the world as far as the US government is concerned. Google has a policy of using BGN for US users. Mexico has no authority.

The administration of President Joe Biden authorized the license in 2022 after Maduro agreed to work with Venezuela’s political opposition toward a democratic election. But the election, which took place in July 2024, was neither fair nor free, and Maduro was sworn in last month for a third six-year term despite credible evidence that his opponent got more votes.

That statement is a bit surprising, considering the source. I figured NPR would shill for a leftist government no matter how rigged their elections were.

    • The Other Kevin

      “credible evidence”

Wow, what happened to “stated without evidence”?

    • rhywun

We’ll know NPR has changed for real when dozens of “journalists” resign in disgust.

It is unclear exactly how Maduro’s government has used that money as it stopped publishing almost all financial data several years ago. On Wednesday, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in a podcast interview with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., accused Maduro of using the funds for “for repression, persecution and corruption.”

    Business as usual.

    • rhywun

You know what? I am not even going to waste my time reading that.

I am sick of tired of a tiny handful of lunatic radicals driving every narrative.

  13. Evan from Evansville

Have we talked about this? “Mexico deports 29 drug cartel figures to the U.S. as officials meet with Trump team
    — Unprecedented show of security cooperation comes as the Trump administration has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports starting Tuesday.”

Me to a FB forum: People criticized my thoughts on Trumps ~SOTU, re: ‘Speak softly; carry a big stick’ diplomatic policy. Well, nations are responding with haste. What do you think of this story? 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧, 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐄𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬, 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩. 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞.
Wielding not the stick of our military superiority, but the gentle carrot of withdrawing x% of our econ power. Nations have time to consider.
Statesmanship. I await further developments. Some silly ideas, & don’t fuck with Massie, but I’m still remarkably impressed with Trump 2.0.
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/mexico-deports-29-drug-cartel-figures-us-officials-meet-trump-team-rcna194149

    • The Other Kevin

I’m skeptical of those cartel figures. Clearly the Mexican government is owned by the cartels, so it seems to me this is all for show in some way.

      • Nephilium

What better way to get rid of your rival cartels than hand them over to the Americans?

      • The Other Kevin

        That’s where my mind went.

      • EvilSheldon

I can think of a few ways that the cartels have already used…

      • Evan from Evansville

Agreed. I know too little to know anything about the Mexican government. I do enjoy the laser-pointer reactions Trump’s policies create, though I think(?) most are, indeed, distractions. See: Renaming the Gulf of Mexico. No one gives a shit. If they do, it reveals they have a comfy life. That’s it.

The US, with its Blue Water Navy and military power, is being mighty polite, using our economic carrot as a threat to push things in the US’ favor. While we still have our mil and econ power, its best they’re utilized to help US interests. I’d vote for no military conflict at all, and this s̵a̵b̵e̵r̵ tariff rattling is getting nations to swiftly act, when before they had purposefully been recalcitrant. Fuck ’em. They deserve the heat.

      • The Other Kevin

It’s amazing to me how much of a piggy bank our country has become. Probably in the name of “spreading democracy” aka maintaining an empire. But we’re $36 Trillion in debt, and still paying for all that USAID bullshit, and NATO, and still paying for wars, and we’re letting other countries impose higher tariffs on us. We’re maxing out our credit cards to pay for everyone else’s bar tab. So yes Evan, I am fine with all this as well.

      • Raven Nation

@TOK: I’ve come to the conclusion that people screaming about cuts either (i) don’t really understand the size of the debt OR (ii) are channeling Dick Cheney on the debt OR (iii) think the debt can be solved by just ‘taxing the rich’

They’re also getting news that tells them there wasn’t much fraud. I saw a few friends make the argument about USAID along the lines of “sure, there was probably a little bit of waste but overall, it worked well.”

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

        @TOK

Yep. I known for a while that our government sees us as tax cattle.

It’s now clear that the rest of the world does too.

“At a microscopic level, yeah, this will hurt individual Tesla owners and it sucks for those whose cars are damaged, especially if they can’t afford to sell or otherwise get rid of their car,” they wrote. “At a macroscopic level, this is extremely effective at making people think twice before purchasing or driving a Tesla, driving down the company’s valuation and ultimately hurting Musk.”

The performative morality of the many outweighs the rights of the few.

The Western Hemisphere has two continents: North America and South America. These continents include a number of countries. Technically all of it is in the Americas. One of the most conspicuous features of the Western Hemisphere is a large gulf between the continents. To call it The Gulf of America or Gulf of the Americas is perfectly accurate.

Personally I am partial to Sharpie’s suggestion: Dixie Bay.

    I guess I’m not understanding what beef Trump has with Canada. I think the best way to “bring manufacturing to the U.S.” is to get rid of the foolish regulations, curb unbridled Union power, and cut corporate tax rates to zero. {Yes, zero. Tax dividends as ordinary income, if you must. What isn’t dividended out is going to remain and be invested, creating jobs, etc.}

    • Suthenboy

Canada, like a lot of other countries does not want to play on a level field. They are accustomed to rolling the US. On a level field how many countries will suddenly find they need to completely change their domestic policies and economic practices? My guess: almost all of them. As TOK rightly points out it is time we stopped being the world’s piggy bank.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah, the idea that we’re just jumping on poor Canada for no good reason is a fallacy. Is this a good way to address our issues with each other? Maybe, maybe not but I guess we’ll find out.

      • Evan from Evansville

        This.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

        Yeah.

They tariff the fuck out of some US products (over 200% on some agricultural products like milk and cheese, a super high number on timber), and dont bother keeping a military knowing that it they were attacked by a foreign power the US would protect them out of our own interest of not wanting a hostile power on our continent. They are also responsible for allowing in an over-represented number of terror suspects through their border.

Their open border policy welcomes the Muslim hordes, and then they file through our border into the US. It’s definitely not the same kind of problem as Mexico, but a problem nonetheless.

They want to protect their industries, but treat us as evil for doing the same.

    • Brochettaward

      It is rather cowardly.

    • Rat on a train

    Flooding in Argentina kills dozens.

It’s probably because Milei fired a bunch of bureaucrats in their federal government.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Or because Trump laid off a couple meteorologists from the NOAA.

      • Rat on a train

It was cutting USAID to Argentinian trans llamas research.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I mean, what will we ever do without a bunch of people who haven’t even been on the job for 2 years? I just don’t know if we can survive with the same number of federally employed meteorologists as in late 2022. Clearly Argentina has already been imperiled.

  24. The Late P Brooks

But we’re $36 Trillion in debt

Number fatigue. It’s just random background noise coming out of the teevee. A trillion is one million millions. There was a time, not so long ago, when a million dollars was considered a lot of money.

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

      And it’s worse than that….

The feds are in debt for somewhere around $36-40T.

The states and various localities are on the hook for a huge amount too. At some point the piper will need paying.

      • Suthenboy

Speaking of other countries ending their welfare states….we need to take a hard look at our own.

      • trshmnstr
