Cha-Ching!

My Swiss master have decided I get an extra ration of raclette each month, so I am living the high life! But rewards aside, it is a very busy time of year. So, I am going to get straight to the links.

  • NYC Government screwed up?! No way!
  • I can’t wait to see this! I wonder who they will put in there?
  • No real news here, but the picture made me laugh.
  • Those whacky Swiss – keep you in suspense.

Music – I had something I heard on the weekend, but for the life of me, I cannot remember it now. So, add your own!

Comments are open and all yours.

Germany should lead any Ukraine peacekeeping force.

    • rhywun

The fun part is no matter who starts WWIII this time is that the US will jump in eventually regardless of what Donald says.

    • grrizzly

German troops should work closely with the Azov battalion (or whatever it’s called now). That would be fun.

But seriously, I can’t believe any European military would be acceptable as “peacekeepers” to Russia. You need somebody neutral like Saudi Arabia or Brazil.

      • Tonio

My understanding is that the Saudi military are basically worthless and heavily dependent upon hired, non-Arab, advisers.

No knowledge about Brazil, but they haven’t fought a war in like… forever?

      • SDF-7

First thing that leaps to my mind isn’t a war — but rather the South American Dreadnought Race.

If one can believe Wikipedia… participation in WWII was the last significant action. Since anyone’s value of “significant” is going to vary there — looks like the last actual one was a civil war.

      • Shpip

One of my favorite substacks is Big Serge, and he recently wrote a short history on the Age of the Dreadnaught.

It’s longish, and the last bit is paywalled, but the first half will be of interest to folks who like history.

      • bacon-magic

Brazilian military looks eerily similar to Carnival. Who wants bikini clad troops pointing things at them? *gives Susanna Hoff side-eye

      • Jarflax

The Germans should name their formation the Zbroya CC, or the German equivalent…

      • DEG

First thing that leaps to my mind isn’t a war — but rather the South American Dreadnought Race.

        That’s a good video.

They had similar races for other bits of military equipment. Argentina and Chile bought lots of Mausers in the late 19th and early 20th century to equipment their armies. Many sat in crates and were not used. There are a lot of like new examples floating around on the US surplus/collectors’ market.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I’m looking forward to all-female platoons from the Ukrainian Army meeting up with all-female platoons from the Brazilian Army.

      • Grummun

I’m looking forward to all-female platoons from the Ukrainian Army meeting up with all-female platoons from the Brazilian Army.

Sounds like an Olympic volleyball match. I’d watch that. The Brazilians probably have the edge.

At a time without a vaccine

At the very least, residents could have been warned to quarantine and wear masks to protect themselves and others, he said.

    Go fuck yourself.

    • Drake

For a moment, I thought they were going to mention hydrocixloriquine and invermectin. Nope.

    • SDF-7

Sigh… I thought we learned from 1919 that all of that was pointless and it was best to just let it burn through and burn out.

And not stick infected people in nursing homes, of course….

Someone should update the saying with “Those who learn history but are hell-bent on denying its validity….”

    • rhywun

Yeah, the whole article reeks. Go sell your tale somewhere else.

    • Suthenboy

“…wear masks to protect themselves…” and just like that we learn that they have nothing to say worth listening to.

Lmao I got nothin, like the Eurotards

    • SDF-7

      Putin is very scared because…

He’s worried the Canadians will try to fry him and smother him in gravy and cheese curds…

    • bacon-magic

He’s loving this dogpiling of the USA. It’s like the Eurotards want WWIII and he is egging it on.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

What does it matter? He was supposed to be dead by now.

  4. SDF-7

No real news here, but the picture made me laugh.

Ukraine (from the Russian side), Libya (from our side)… I’m sure I’m forgetting more — but if the Nork’s can’t look around the globe and realize that the best way for a small country to not get pushed around by the “global powers” is to have nukes, they’d be stupid.

As such, I honestly expect more proliferation as time goes on — not less. MAD will continue to be the failsafe.

    • rhywun

Do they even have nukes? It’s like anyone can verify it.

      • rhywun

        “not”, even

      • EvilSheldon

I’ve heard rumors that a lot of the NK nuclear tests, upon closer examination, look more like large conventional detonations seeded with old reactor fuel.

      • SDF-7

I thought we had radiation detection / seismic readings from underground testing and that was why we think they do. Not like they’ve lobbed a nuke at Bikini Atoll to join the club, no.

      • Tonio

Delivery is an issue for the NORKs. However, even a low-yield device, or a dirty bomb, could cause all sorts of trouble if detonated in the hold of a ship in a port.

    • Drake

Who knows whether or not Iran has a couple of hot rounds in the chamber. Supposedly the Pakistanis and Indians do.

  5. SDF-7

I had something I heard on the weekend, but for the life of me, I cannot remember it now

I can’t find who said it but someone quipped a country song refrain: “How can I remember… the things I can’t forget….” and you brought it to mind with this.

  6. The Late P Brooks

The city Health Department missed early detection of COVID-19 because it listened to CDC bureaucrats — losing the chance to potentially spare untold numbers from death, a former agency director claims.

    Doubt.

      • SDF-7

Well not now — you just told on it.

  7. Shpip

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had, he said, “shown once again, and beyond any doubt, that Ukraine is the party of peace” by accepting a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.

Or, he means “the party of getting our asses kicked, and besides — we’re out of bodies and ammo.”

I almost wonder if Ukraine’s is a Hamas-style cease-fire, i.e., “Please stop shooting us until we can replenish our weapons,” which might be a neat trick with the U.S. refusing to play Sugar Daddy for the time being.

    • cavalier973

Have you seen anyone claiming that Russia is secretly funding Zelenskyy?

      • Spudalicious

The Ukrainians have been buying discounted Russian fuel, and pocketing the extra from what we’ve been giving them in fuel funds.

  8. Raven Nation

The Australian prime minister (left of center) has been suggesting it will send peace-keeping troops to Ukraine. The opposition leader (moderate right-of-center) has declared they will not (there’s supposed to be an election this year). Of course, the government has now accused the opposition of abandoning Ukraine.

The deputy opposition leader made the insane statement: “will always stand with Ukraine” but “when it comes to boots on the ground, this is a matter better handled by Europe”. Of course, when the current opposition was in power they sent weapons and money to Ukraine.

    • SDF-7

Just send some of the snakes, spiders and drop bears.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

We stand with Ukraine, but we’ll be standing over here. Way, way over here.

  9. The Late P Brooks

That meant they were potentially unaware that they had it — and more importantly, could infect others who were in poor health, immunocompromised or with serious pre-existing conditions or illness.

We shoulda masked up and locked down sooner and harder? Fuck you and the broom you rode in on.

  10. The Late P Brooks

    Minor hiccup

The federal agency estimates that only 1% of the 90,081 units included in the recall will be affected by the issue. However, the fix is an essential one, GM explained in its recall filings. The beginning of the fix includes installing a new transmission control module software that monitors the performance of the valve. The software will lie dormant unless it detects excessive wear 10,000 miles before a potential wheel lock-up condition could occur, at which point it will limit the transmission to fifth gear, locking out the upper range of the ‘box. GM says this is because the most likely wheel lock-up condition would be during a downshift from eighth gear.

Just throw a software patch at it.

    • SDF-7

Road and Track doesn’t like my ad blocker… so no views for them!

Just on the vague topic of GM — I was annoyed to realize over the weekend that while driving around for SDF-7-A’s birthday stuff the weekend prior, I evidently pushed over 500k on the odometer of my Chevy. I was going to take a picture or something… now I’m 100 miles over. Ah well…. but that’s a minor counter-point in that GM at least made some decent cars in 2003….

    • SDF-7

Only Q should be allowed to post redheads today.

I’ve got a submission draft saved. It’s done, really, but how do I add art? I see the Featured Image part, but what about inserting them into the piece, layout, etc?

If it’s longer than a 2-3 sentence answer, just tell me. I’ll know to hunker into a tutorial.

    • cavalier973

I added pics as attachments to the email I sent Tonio for my latest submission.

He hasn’t sent me anything back, so maybe I did it wrong.

Uh oh. We’ve pissed off the Danes…

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/danish-viking-blood-boiling-danes-164711884.html

“Ivan Hansen, a retired Danish police officer, loaded up his basket at the supermarket, carefully checking each product to avoid buying anything made in the United States. No more Coca-Cola, no more California Zinfandel wine or almonds.

The 67-year-old said it’s the only way he knows to protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. He’s furious about Trump’s threat to seize the Danish territory of Greenland, but it’s not just that. There are also the threats to take control of the Panama Canal and Gaza. And Trump’s relationship with Elon Musk, who has far-right ties and made what many interpreted as a straight-armed Nazi salute.”

It goes on like this for many hilarious paragraphs. They’re even using stars as labels again in Europe:

“Responding to consumer demand, Denmark’s largest supermarket chain, the Salling Group, created a star-shaped label this month to mark European-made goods sold in its stores.”

“Elsebeth Pedersen, who lives in Faaborg on the Danish island of Funen, just bought a car and made a point of not even looking at U.S.-made options.”

I, ahem, can’t really blame here there.

    Corporate suicide

The company has not publicly embraced Trump or any of his policies but has been full-throated in its embrace of Kennedy.“We support MAHA,” Steak ’n Shake Chief Operations Officer Dan Edwards told NBC News last week. “Restaurant chains like ours would like to meet customer demand for better quality.”

Edwards said support for the company is “across the political spectrum” and that “there is nothing political about great-tasting fries.” He did not answer specifically whether the company had any fears about alienating customers who do not support Kennedy’s MAHA agenda or Trump.

    ——-

Politics aside, Steak ’n Shake’s choice to focus on seed oils comes with its own controversy.

The MAHA agenda, helmed by Kennedy, features several health-focused concerns of questionable veracity, including skepticism of the food and drug industry, fluoride in water and vaccines. Seed oils have also long been a target of unfounded theories about negative health impacts, some of which Kenney has touted, calling them “one of the most unhealthy ingredients we have in foods.”

Health experts have sought to counter those claims, noting that replacing seed oils with saturated fats offers little to no dietary benefit and can end up doing harm.

First thing we do, let’s kill all the health experts.

    • B.P.

Steak ‘n Shake is pretty good. I wouldn’t say I go there for the health benefits, though.

    • Suthenboy

“…would like to meet customer demand for better quality.”

No shit. No cook wants to be known for bad food. Almost all chains today started out with the best quality food they could manage but over time govt fucktardery had nibbled away at their ability to provide quality until there is almost nothing left.
I know exactly how to fix the problem and it has nothing to do with magical diet bullshit.

    • rhywun

If the plague years taught us anything, it’s that the government would never lie to us about health.

(As long as you don’t pay attention to all the outlets now admitting that they lied about everything.)

Appropriate today as I met with the local realtor about selling some property. I had already fixed a price in my mind and after our walk through his estimates were considerably higher. I’m glad that I didn’t tell him my estimate first.
