Saturday evening Links

Wasn’t that a fun week? Anybody else get raw dogged by the market? Good thing I don’t need to sell anything right now, as I do think that this isn’t going to hold. Countries are pulling their money out of the markets, as are large investors. Then they’ll wait a bit and see how things shake out, and that money will come back to where they think the best investments are. It will come back, but it will look quite different as far as asset allocation. At least that’s what I’m hoping happens.

Links?

Florida Woman don’t take no shit.

An interesting interview with Bill Murray.

In. My. Veins.

Just your daily reminder of how nice it is to live in a free country.

How about a little Saturday evening prawn?

Gotta keep that Jew hate going. What else do you expect from a human rights council?

Okay, I think I’ve adequately phoned that in. Y’all have a marvelous evening. Peace out, Glibbies.

Oh. The market. Thought at first you were going to delve into classical Greek mythology.

I shall now peruse the lynx.

Florida Woman should play Red Sonja in an Amazon Studios production. Maybe it won’t get cancelled like Conan did.

I just saw a conspiracy theory that Trump is trying to crash the markets so that large investors flee to Treasuries, which will result in lower interest rates, so that he can refinance the federal debt.

He also wants tariffs so that US farmers won’t sell their products overseas, lowering food prices.

We will see how that strategy works out for him.

    • creech

All I fucking know is my bank stock is down 25 percent since OMB was inaugurated. Scared to look at what’s happened to the grandkids’ 529 accounts. Sure, the markets will come back…I just hope it is in my remaining lifetime.

      • creech

I heard Bogle speak years ago, and quickly jumped on board the Vanguard – S&P 500 Index Fund train. Buy and Hold is sound advice when you are 20, 30, even 50. But, at some point, you don’t want the market in a huge downturn just when you need the money later in your lifetime.

      • UnCivilServant

If you’re a normie, the stock market isn’t for you ever getting your money back – it’s for salami slicing to finance the ambitions of unaccountable corporate officers.

      • Gustave Lytton

Hence the percentage shift from stocks to bonds/money market funds as risk tolerance changes.

      • Gustave Lytton

And it’s not just buy and hold but broad market indexes.

Stock picking is for insiders or chumps.

      • Fourscore

I took the hit as well but I’m sort of past worrying about it, since our time frame is shorter than most. We just sold some property, the cash will go into mutual funds. While the downturn may not be over we have our estate, such as it is, planned for the future for kids/grandkids.

        Buy on the dip.

      • slumbrew

Indeed, that’s why I’m $(120-my age) in equities; it felt a bit weird to have so much in a bond index (“I’m still young!”) but I’m happy I took my rebalancing seriously a couple years back.

      • Q Continuum

I’m gonna be buying. I think this comes back plus more within the next 12-18 months.

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

        Buy on the dip.

How do you know when the dip is at it’s lowest?

        /still a newbie at 54.

      • Spudalicious

You don’t. That’s why the market is a form of gambling. The advantage is your level of knowledge of how the market works and fluctuates, and how to read current economic indicators. I’m by no means an expert, and have somebody else in charge of my investments but I do pay attention. The issue this week is that Trump has thrown a turd into the community pool, so everybody is bailing until the pool can be drained, cleaned, and refilled. Then they’ll jump back in, but in a different manner.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

And that’s why Spud put in a Bill Murray interview.

(which was awesome, by the way)

      • DrOtto

Buy the dip if you’re young. Don’t sell if you’re old. I’m 54 and on cruise control so I’m not buying unless I see something very attractive. I was looking for early retirement. I doubt this puts me off much if any. My target is 2 years from now. I can’t believe it’s been as long as it has since we’ve had an actual correction. We went through one in 2020, but it was papered over with printed fiat currency. It appeared a year later in the form of 20% inflation, several consecutive quarters of negative GDP “growth” and new definitions of what a recession is, all with relatively flat stock prices. This one, we can actually see and it’s getting reported on. It’s like the media suddenly gives a shit about stockholders, which I had previously been informed were all rich fat-cats.

Good heavans, a reduction of force, I mean, personnel, at the Infernal Revenue Service?

Those eighty thousand new hires didn’t last very long.

    • rhywun

Don’t worry, somewhere a plucky judge is working hard to restore those critical jobs.

  5. Aloysious

    +1 Pink Floyd.

David Gimour’s latest album, Luck and Strange, was quite good, IMO. Pretty mellow. His daughter sings on one of the songs. Forget which.

The market will recover once all the lemmings have thrown themselves over the cliff.

Trans Muslim “woman” mocks Christianity in a Muslim country and… goes to jail.

I am soooo confused by the all intersectionalities I can’t even.

    • cavalier973

As I understand it, Muslims consider Jesus to be a prophet, not as good as Muhammad, of course, but a holy man. They don’t believe Jesus is the Son of God or that He died on the cross. I believe they teach that Judas took Jesus’s place on the cross, or something like that.

I also think they teach that Jesus will return in the End Times to teach Christians that they’ve been wrong all this time, and need to become Muslims.

      • rhywun

Jesus will return in the End Times to teach Christians that they’ve been wrong all this time, and need to become Muslims

Ah, so no need for all that jihad they’ve been using over the centuries to “hurry things up”.

  8. The Late P Brooks

He also wants tariffs so that US farmers won’t sell their products overseas, lowering food prices.

    Oh. Uh huh.

    • cavalier973

Politicians do things for political reasons that have little relation to economic realities. FDR was having farmers plow over their crops in order to raise prices, in a time when people were going hungry.

The conspiracy theorist part of me wonders if this is some sort of ploy to make Bill Gates sell off the massive amounts of farmland he has supposedly bought.

      • Gender Traitor

Gates will just sell all that farmland to the Chinese. 😒

      • RAHeinlein

The farm products piece makes no sense of you look at our major export crops (plus Trump’s base) – that one is pure nonsense. The debt refinance is likely real along with desire to decrease interest rates for myriad reasons.

    • Fourscore

Keep those farm subsidies rolling. Agra businesses are loving them.

  9. cavalier973

Maybe the reduction in force is necessary, since there won’t be an IRS soon.

    • R.J.

      Stahp.
I can only get so hard!

    • Aloysious

      cav, you’re such a tease.

  10. The Late P Brooks

Joe Biden’s economy was humming along like a well oiled machine and the stock market was booming when Trump took over. Now look at it!

I read that today. He should probably be impeached.

    • rhywun

I have suffered though several rounds of TV news today – local and national – it is more biased than I even imagined. Not one second to spare a thought against the constant drumbeat of leftist everything.

      • Gender Traitor

Stop doing that to yourself! (Someone quotes John Prine in 3…2…1…)

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

        Blow up your TV
        Throw away your paper.
        Go to the country,
        build you a home
        Plant a little garden,
        eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

      • Fourscore

Nick, that’s what we’re trying to do but I can’t get the peaches to grow. I switched to rutabagas and no jesus, by god.

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

        4score,

        Apples grow better up here.

I been searching for that guy (Jesus) for YEARS! He’s better than Waldo at hiding.

      • Gender Traitor

You may not be looking in the wrong place.

  11. rhywun

Gotta keep that Jew hate going. What else do you expect from a human rights council?

    She seems nice.

  12. The Late P Brooks

Index funds make sense, but when the index is basically driven by a small handful of stocks (“magnificent seven”) the theory is kind of diminished by the reality.

    Sector funds, maybe.

    • rhywun

How many young British men are willing to fight for their country?

      This.

The answer is zero of the millions of recent arrivals plus vanishingly smaller numbers of natives. Rinse, repeat.

    • trshmnstr

What the author doesnt realize (because he has no way of realizing it) is that we’re much further down the path toward becoming the rest of the West than we were 15 years ago.

Granted, it seems that much of the Post-war consensus is on trial in the US these days, and that is what’s making our vassals nervous.

  13. R.J.

Jeez. There is a white out in Amarillo TX. Massive snow storm.
    I blame Joe Biden.

    • Gender Traitor

Ugh! We’ve been getting drenched with rain for days now, and the only really useful thing I’ve done all day is mop up the puddles in the basement. Still having a better day than our neighbor across the street, who got hauled away in an ambulance earlier today. 😳 Haven’t yet heard what happened – he’s seriously OCD, so he may have discovered a flooded basement and suffered a fit of apoplexy. (Or maybe he checked his 401(k) balance?) Not an inviting day for neighbors to be out and about, but I hope we find out soon what’s wrong and see if there’s anything we can do for them. 😟

  14. The Late P Brooks

Jeez. There is a white out in Amarillo TX. Massive snow storm.

TRUMP FIRED ALL THE WEATHERPERSONS!!!!! This never would have happened if trump hadn’t gutted SCIENCE.

      Yes. How could I forget?

      There is a white out

So, FreeDOS installed, but it only wants to make 2GB partitions on the 128GB hard drive.

I need to relearn DOS, I haven’t used it in years.

Maybe I shopuld try to set it up as multiboot with a linux partition. I haven’t done that in years either.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

FreeDOS is just another word for nothing left to host.

    • slumbrew

I have a vague memory of a 2GB max primary partition size back in the day. But that might be my faulty memory.

      • UnCivilServant

Thing is, FreeDOS in a fairly modern implementation, and supports FAT32, which should go up far higher. Older FATXX formats had smaller max sizes.

Being a migrant from desert states for decades…I embrace the rains. Day 4, should be no thunderstorms tonight

  17. grrizzly

Today I visited a grocery store in Los Angeles. While browsing their liquor department, I was listening to two shop clerks talking to each other in Russian. The young woman was speaking native non-accented Russian. The guy had an Armenian accent. Once I picked my bottle, I went to them and said good afternoon to the woman in Russian. She replied good afternoon… but in Ukrainian. She then asked me for my date of birth in Ukrainian, I replied in Russian. LOL.

And don’t think it’s a brand new thing. A friend of my mine grew up in Donbas. But he attended a high school in Kiev, a boarding school for mathematically-gifted kids. So, he learned to speak Ukrainian fluently in addition to his native Russian. It was in the late 1990s. Once he saw a seller at a farmers’ market was asked a question in Russian and responded in Ukrainian. My friend approached the seller and started talking in Ukrainian. The seller immediately switched to Russian.
