Saturday evening, no pants Saturday links

by | Aug 20, 2022 | Daily Links | 114 comments

Psych! That isn’t me, just some rando on the subway.

It took an extra cup of coffee for me to make the decision, but this is an official “no pants Saturday” in the Spud household. I pity the solicitor that rings the doorbell today.

How about some depressing links?!?

I got an idea. How about y’all stop shooting at it?

The ’80s called, and they want Ortega back.

Colorado rejoices.

Take a jacket, it’s going to be chilly.

I’m sure OMWC can fix her.

I really don’t think the e-mails were necessary to figure that out.

That’s good for today. I’ve got high hopes for the evening.

Gary Busey was red hot after being nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for The Buddy Holly Story and landed a gig hosting Saturday Night Live. They had a funny bit going that night where John Belushi, still in the SNL cast at that time, resented Busey for supposedly getting the last Best Actor nomination, stealing the spot away from Belushi for Animal House. What a different time. And amazing how the lives of Belushi and Busey turned out after that.

So if the US is Columbia’s biggest customer in the illegal trade will that translate to improved quality, packaging and price? With the government involved in the wet dreams I can’t believe anything besides quantity will change.

What’ll all the boys at DEA do, won’t someone think of them?

    • rhywun

I have a feeling the idea will be quietly dropped after a little talking-to from the Americans.

Show the Ortega article to people with TDS, then sit back and watch the cognitive dissonance.

Harsh measures are necessary sometimes when dealing with turbulent priests or associates of Bad Orange Man threats to democracy.

  4. Shpip

Nicaraguan police on Friday raided the residence of a Roman Catholic bishop critical of President Daniel Ortega’s administration, detaining him and several other priests in a dramatic escalation of tensions between the church and a government increasingly intolerant of dissent.

The pre-dawn raid came after Nicaraguan authorities had accused Matagalpa Bishop Rolando Álvarez of “organizing violent groups” and inciting them “to carry out acts of hate against the population.”

Just wondering: if the Church took a bunch of their “liberation theology” priests and reassigned them to Nicaragua, would the priests a) become shills for the Ortega regime, or b) speak out against oppression and risk going toe-to-toe with the Escuadróns de la Muerte?

How long does it take to say, “They suck from the owner down.”? Hell, the last time they won the Division it was with a 7-9 record.

      • Shpip

They’ve always been that way. When George Preston Marshall owned the team, they had a stretch from 1946 (when the NFL integrated) to his death in 1969 where they only had three winning seasons. Then Jack Kent Cooke acquired the team, and the ‘Skins were perennial contenders, going to four Super Bowls and winning three. Then some weenie with a Napoleon complex named Daniel Snyder bought the team. Since then, the Redskins / Football Team / Commies are 56 games under .500 over 23 seasons and have two total playoff wins.

It all starts with ownership. There was a reason that Culverhouse’s Bucs were the laughingstock of the league, and that DeBartolo’s 49ers were the cream of the crop.

  7. The Late P Brooks

It’s a radical turn in this historically conservative country, one that could upend its longstanding — and lucrative — counternarcotics relationship with the United States. U.S. officials past and present are signaling concern; the drug was responsible for an estimated 25,000 overdose deaths in the United States last year.

    Wait, what?

    • rhywun

I paused at that but who knows. It sounds like BS to me.

      • C. Anacreon

Agreed. I seriously doubt many deaths from solely using cocaine, unless the use caused a heart attack or stroke. More likely the “overdoses” were from multiple substances together, and it was actually an opioid OD that was responsible for the deaths.

      • rhywun

Yup. Probably speedballs. I have some experience and/or knowledge in this area.

There’s nothing in that article or the source material that actually shows Biden teaming up with Tik Tok specifically. It just says Biden reversed Trump’s ban (true) and that Tik Tok will be moderating election content (also true). The author then connects the dots but doesn’t actually show where Biden is specifically teaming with Tik Tok. Don’t get me wrong, the CCP (and probably Biden) will obviously mess with content during the elections, but this is clickbait.

These ‘elections’ are in breach of Ukrainian law and therefore illegal. In taking on and acting in this capacity, and in participating formally as a candidate in the illegal ‘elections’, she has therefore actively supported actions and policies which undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, and to further destabilised Ukraine. I have to thank this site for helping me out with my job. This past week we were on an executive retreat for our medical group, and we were discussing the key principles of our “democratic partnership”. We got to discussing the “democracy” principle of our organization, and the question arose whether pure democracy is always a good thing. I spoke up and said “not necessarily, recognize that (here’s where I borrowed from Glibs) democracy can also mean two wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner. ”

Clearly my colleagues are not readers of this site or familiar with that idea, because the whole crowd broke out laughing…but then they also realized it was an important aspect to consider for our principles. So it clearly influenced how that particular principle waa defined in our group’s published core beliefs.

The next day, in his opening remarks to the crowd, the CEO specifically called me out for my comments the previous day, and how valuable he thought my insight and humor helped our discussion. It felt good, and probably won’t hurt for the future.

So thanks, commentariat, for getting me in good with the boss! Just another example of how much I appreciate all of you and your wise and witty banter that keeps me coming back ever day.

    • slumbrew

That seems so self-evident it’s hard to believe I didn’t come across it outside (g)libertarian circles.

We went to watch the Chargers-Dallas game at the new stadium in LA tonight (SoFi – where the Superbowl was), mostly to see the stadium and let my kiddo see an NFL game before he leaves for college. Getting in was a bit confused, I thought it was poorly marked, at least for first time visitors, I’d be okay to navigate it now, probably, but I feel for people who are gonna come for the Olympics and wander around helplessly. Feels much bigger in person than on the tv, that’s for sure. Very nice on our level near the field and of course it’s all super new, so the seats are comfy and not gross. The fancy floating overhead screen thing wasn’t working for the first half which made it feel a bit old school. The parking is just stupid there and needs a multilevel structure, not tiny flat lots.

    • one true athena

Haven’t watched it, though I don’t think I will either from what I’ve read. Sad. I enjoyed the first batch of issues of her solo comic series back ~ 15 years ago . It can be pretty funny to imagine law cases within the Marvelverse (but then I’m a law nerd who wrote an entire article about all the California Penal/Vehicular Code provisions Batman breaks, so ymmv) and Jen was always green back then, so that was sort of innately comedic too to have this giant green lady in the courtroom. Such an easy concept and then they had to muck it up with dumb hashtag feminism. Because girls graduate from law school more than boys, see how oppressed I am! God, so insufferable.

      • DrOtto

So, this is a vote for Cavemen, or …?

Will watch (I hate myself) and will complain. But I didn’t watch yet.

I’m sure it’s tasty, but I’m not bothering to flour, egg wash, and bread goddamn SPAM, let alone deep fry it.

I cut my cans of SPAM into straws the way she does, though. Pan fry the whole lot, getting a good crust on all four sides. Serve next to eggs, with a dollop of sriracha on the side for dipping.
