IFLA: The “Dull, Dull, Dull” Edition of the horoscope for the Week of August 28

by | Aug 28, 2022 | IFLA | 87 comments

So… you come here often?

On Sunday, literally nothing happens. Anything you may see on the news will be made up or a rehash of the past. Monday, the world starts to wiggle a bit like a butterfly getting caught in a breeze as the Moon and Mercury team up to disturb Libra’s equilibrium. Thursday you get a bit more of the nonsense at home effect from Jupiter Retrograde that’s been hitting every couple of weeks or so *shakes fist at orbital mechanics* but it’s very temporary. Beyond that, a whole lot of nothing. Even for Virgo, who should be having some good stuff happening, they’re pretty much left in the lurch until next week.

Chase game!

Virgo: The Hanged Man reversed – Selfishness, the crowd, body politic.

Libra: 8 of Cups reversed – Great joy, happiness, feasting.

Sagittarius: Page of Swords – Authority, overseeing, secret service, vigilance, spying, examination.

Scorpio: The High priestess reversed – Passion, moral or physical ardor, conceit, surface knowledge.

Capricorn: 2 of Swords – Vengeance, inevitability, finality, balance

Aquarius: Knight of Wands reversed – Rupture, division, interruption, discord.

Pisces: Queen of Coins – Opulence, generosity, magnificence, security, liberty.

Aries: Knight of Coins reversed – Inertia, idleness, repose of that kind, stagnation, placidity, discouragement, carelessness.

Taurus: 10 of Cups reversed – Repose of the false heart, indignation, violence.

Gemini: Knight of Swords – Skill, bravery, capacity, defense, address, enmity, wrath, war, destruction, opposition, resistance, ruin.

Cancer: King of Cups – Man of business, law, or divinity; responsible; also equity, art and science, including those who profess science, law and art; creative intelligence.

Leo: 7 of Swords –  Design, attempt, wish, hope, confidence, quarrelling, a plan that may fail, annoyance.

Dance? Hard to take down one opponent when there are four others to keep an eye on.

Scorpio: The High priestess reversed – …moral or physical ardor

    Why not both?

    • UnCivilServant

Well is that a vernacular exclusive or, or is it a mathematica includive or?

Boolean operator. (Note to self: delete browser history!)

    Mixed bag. Needs more shit.

I like the addition of videos clips.

      • Not Adahn

It’s hard to get new dog pics.

The hiking group has collapsed. The serious hikers wanted to do more challenging hikes, and the casual ones didn’t want to deal with the summer heat. Plus, I’m away so many weekends shooting now. Hopefully it’ll pick back up in the fall.

The dog park itself is very boring as a background.
The woods around the dog park have shitty sight lines since the caterpillar apocalypse caused it to grow an understory, and with the burrs ripening, only the least-burr infested part gets waked anymore. This also makes for boring pics.

At least I figured out how to embed them muted. Lily gets very concerned when she can hear Marley barking.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m just not a fan of embedded videos in general.

      • Tonio

You don’t have to watch them.

      • Ted S.

True, but some of them seem to want to autoplay even if you have autoplay turned off, while some insist on popping up in a corner of the site as well.

      • EvilSheldon

Bruh. Being both a moderately serious backpacker and a moderately serious shooter, I feel you. The two seasons overlap completely. I should take up snowshoeing or igloo camping or something…

Also, I meant to ask you – how is that Igman 124grn. 9mm ammo? Fairly accurate? Clean? It seemed reliable enough in your Shadow. I need to stack up a couple cases, and the Igman is about the cheapest brass-cased 9×19 around.

      • Not Adahn

The Belom 124gr I was shooting runs fine. But then again, I’ve only ever had 3 failures to eject/extract with that gun and nothing else that’s plausibly ammo related.

      • Not Adahn

I always assume any accuracy problems are on my end.

  7. westernsloper

Gemini: Knight of Swords – Skill, bravery, capacity, defense, address, enmity, wrath, war, destruction, opposition, resistance, ruin.

    Fuck it. I’ll take it.

Love the Lily vids. Does that ever turn into a full on dog fight? I know she is part Pyrenees and those dogs will murder some shit.

    • Not Adahn

Rarely. Lily is very good at getting other dogs to back down — usually strange intact males. She’s been attacked for real only once, and that dog hasn’t been back.

Lily literally shrugs off Marley. Of the dogs pictured here, all of them are good about playing as a group. Not all of the regulars are like that. This year is different with the group playing, last year they pretty much paired off. No idea how/why that dynamic changes.

      • westernsloper

Maybe they are all just getting to know each other better. I have never been to a dog park. Anyways, the vids are fun. She is a cool dog.

    • whiz

As a Gemini, it looks like a busy and hectic week.

  8. UnCivilServant

🙁 One of my early beta readers just passed away. I’d hadn’t spoken to him in the past few years, but that somehow makes it worse.

    • Sean

      Sorry, UCS.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

Yeah, you lose someone who helped you out, that blows. Sorry, mang.

      • Zwak. And once again, the mall is his Waterloo

Sorry UCS, good readers are good people.

    • Gender Traitor

I’m sorry, and I think I understand why the recent lack of contact makes it worse. When one of my cousins passed away last winter, I felt bad that I hadn’t responded to his annual Christmas card suggestions that we try to get together.

      • UnCivilServant

I’ve collected regrets like a hoarder.

      • Don escaped Texas

        a well-turned phrase

I arrived at the ability to live in the moment well over 80% of the time
that was, of course, after getting home and retirement squared away, so the future is a box checked and only the question of how long I plan on living left
even so, the present can be a bitch

  9. Mojeaux

Taurus: Repose of the false heart, indignation, violence.

    Fabulous, yet again!

    • Not Adahn

You should have picked a better time of year to be born.

      • Mojeaux

Queen Elizabeth II was born on my birthday. So there’s that.

      • UnCivilServant

I thought you were much younger than QEII

      • Not Adahn

        Moj’s kids turned out better.

      • Mojeaux

Er… maybe not. That’s still pending.

      • Mojeaux

That is very kind of you. Thank you.

    • UnCivilServant

Maybe the peppers’ humours are off.

      • Sean

Are you suggesting I should apply leeches?

      • UnCivilServant

        *consults reference books*

An excess of yellow bile indicates the application of a emetic. Can you get the peppers to vomit?

      • Not Adahn

        Changeling!

  10. Sean

Grill is on. Steak…yadda yadda yadda…

    • westernsloper

Lighting the grill now. Burgers for lunches during the week going on and in a bit I need to take the brisket out of the sous vide for a finishing smoke.

      • Ownbestenemy

Pork chops are marinating. Chilies were roasted. Other chilies next on the pellet smoker and will grind down.

Then onto the firepit bench. Cuts and cement and fun to be had

      • westernsloper

        👍

  11. The Late P Brooks

The video clips seem to have caused my browser to crash a couple of times, previously. Not today (yet).

    • UnCivilServant

Did it give an error or just crash to desktop?

And when did ti crash, on load or on play?

  12. The Late P Brooks

Did it give an error or just crash to desktop?

    ,/em>

Locked up. Had to force shutdown and restart.

    • UnCivilServant

A whole system failure lead me to think either video driver or hardware issue.

  13. KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

    Aries sounds great!!

    • rhywun

We’ll take what we can get at this point.

  14. KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

    On Sunday, literally nothing happens.

    Except a dead truck battery

    • Gender Traitor

Well, you turned the key and nothing happened.

Got AAA? Or helpful & apparently trustworthy neighbors in the RV park (or wherever you are?)

      • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

Had to unhook the car from the dolly to jump start the truck. Made it back to home base just fine.

      • Sean

        Happy ending.

      • R C Dean

        Bow-chicka-etc.

    • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

      With a non-functional auxiliary starter.

    • Gustave Lytton

I’ve been meaning to get one of those porta-starts.

    • Not Adahn

      …that qualifies as inertia/idleness.

  15. Scruffy Nerfherder

Capricorn: 2 of Swords – Vengeance, inevitability, finality, balance

I WILL FINALLY GET MY REVENGE!!!! AHAHAHAHAhahaaaaaaaaa!

    Now who is my archenemy?

    • UnCivilServant

HPD Chief Troy Finner said he believes the suspect may have been a disgruntled tenant who was getting evicted and took retaliatory action against other people living in the neighborhood.

According to the landlord, the suspect lived there since 2013, but didn’t pay rent.

Nine years to evict? What is this, california?

  16. The Late P Brooks

I’m going to try to get this slightly reformulated comment past the server error skwerl one more time. Speaking of… maybe it doesn’t like parentheses. I’ll omit them.

There’s this weird commercial which has been popping up on Pandora. I’m cheap. Sue me. Setup: A young woman calls her mother to announce her pregnancy.

Here’s the weird part. They both treat this as if it’s unequivocally good news. No weepy panicked talk about rushing off to a free state to get an abortion before the Baby Police intern her for her enforced pregnancy to term and deadly live birth.

I have no idea what they’re actually selling. Not California abortion tourism.

    • whiz

Targeting actual normal people, I guess.

  17. The Late P Brooks

    Hah. Take that, server skwerl.

  18. hayeksplosives

“Aries: Knight of Coins reversed – Inertia, idleness, repose of that kind, stagnation, placidity, discouragement, carelessness”

Hmm…This will be my last week in my old job role, so there will be a certain amount of idleness. Not much to do except wrap a few things up.

I will crush any “discouragement, carelessness” with my mind-vise and not allow them to manifest.

  19. hayeksplosives

My 12 week old gray tabby is in need of a name. For now, he is a tiny fluffball of rambunctiousness, so we really don’t know what his personality will be when he grows up.

If paw size is any indicator, he will be a big boy. His mother is a smallish seal point kitty, but dad is unknown. (Mama cat got out before her owner had her fixed and came back preggers.)

Our other cat is named Felix, so I thought Oscar would be good, but Mr Splosives disagrees.

    • Animal

      “Fritz.”

      • hayeksplosives

        Maybe…not bad, not bad.

“Nandor the Relentless” is amusing but “experts agree” that it’s good to have an “ee” sound in the name. Evidently cats respond best to the “ee” sound. Same problem for “Chonk the Destroyer” unless I called him Chonky.

      • Gender Traitor

My oldest sister dubbed her mischievous Siamese Loki.

        Beware of self-fulfilling prophecies.

      • hayeksplosives

There are a LOT of Lokis out there at present.

If I go with mythology, he might be an Ajax.

      • Seguin

        EE sound, huh… Didjereedoo?

      • mindyourbusiness

One of our guys is huge (daddy was likely a Maine Coon) and we thought about naming him Morgo the Friendly Drelb. Settled for something more prosaic. If he grows up large…

    • dbleagle

With Felix you could always go with “Unger”.

To channel the Pythons you could use “Hidler”, “Dinsdale”, or “Newt”.

To go with felis, you could use “Felis”, “Concolor”, or ” Silvestris Catus ”

To piss off any blue neighbors you could use, “Donald”, Maga”, Hatnhair” or “Hildebeast”.

For awesome you could use “Cthulhu”, “Beelzebub”, “Dog”, or “Shark”.

      • hayeksplosives

I like Shark. He would be a Tiger Shark, since he’s a tabby. Newt is cute too.

I have no blue neighbors (Yay, Pahrump!) but there are some in town.

    • whiz

Going with a classical music theme, how about Wolfgang (“Wolfie” for short), Sebastian (“Sebby”), or Ludwig (uh, I give up).

      • R C Dean

        “Ludwig”

        Wiggy?

I note that R C has the desired “ee” sound.

      • R C Dean

As does “Dean”, now that I think about it.

    • Mojeaux

      Prestidigitation.

  20. The Late P Brooks

He’s an escape artist, right? Call him Houdini.

    • hayeksplosives

I don’t know if he’s an escape artist. He hasn’t managed to get outside yet. He does climb on EVERYTHING though.

      • dbleagle

        Mallory or Tenzig Norgay then.

  21. mindyourbusiness

One of our guys is huge (daddy was likely a Maine Coon) and we thought about naming him Morgo the Friendly Drelb. Settled for something more prosaic. If he grows up large…
