IFLA: The “Draaaama” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of September 11

Chase!

This is one of those weeks wherein everything gets touched by MERCURY RETROGRADE. As I cast this, Elizabeth II is still alive, but the stars are saying she won’t make it past Tuesday (MERCURY RETRORGADE – Moon – Jupiter Retrograde). Definitely a rulership vacancy then. The day after, We see said MERCURY RETROGRADE lining up with Venus, the Sun and Saturn retrograde. Now Saturn Retrograde is interesting here since it indicates either a particularly unpleasant ending or a new beginning (also failed harvests and plumbing problems). Venus is (obviously) representative of women, but due to the way this whole Astrology thing got scienced together, it’s not typically a “queen” symbol. So I think this is more an emphasis or major event that has ongoing effects (since the MERCURY RETROGRADE – Sun -Venus part of the alignment persists until next week.) Maybe Chuckie tries to elevate Camilla above where people are willing to tolerate her? We’ll have to ask Limey about it.

So yes, MERCURY RETROGRADE is something we’ve dealt with before, but know that in this particular case it’s happening in Libra, which gives it extra effects in its chaos-bringing. Monday and Tuesday will be especially unlucky with the moon in opposition in Aries.

What? Typing? Video game marathons? Mulching the back yard? Sigh. I shall do all this in moderation.

My wife asked me if we could host some volunteers.

    Me: “Who? Volunteers for what?”

    Mrs P: “Beto for Governor.”

Me: (ponders giving that a Strong Ignore, settles for a mild Have You Lost Your Damn Mind look).

    “I’d … rather not.”

Lol. I was thinking something similar.

    • R.J.

Can you even imagine what volunteers for Beto would be like? I can’t. I can’t fathom it.

Good idea, although perhaps some Greig might provide culturally enlightening.

The Fool. So, clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right?

On a side not, I think I pro is going to be needed to come in and fix the floor. Vinyl tiles aren’t always cool.

Is LVP? My wife has fallen for the trend and is going to put them in the bathroom now.

No, old school mastic based. A couple need to be pulled out and replaced.

Today is a good time to remind people that the only contest that matters in life is that between the Golden Firsters and the sloppy seconders. Everything else is painfully trivial.

  13. The Late P Brooks

First thing we do, let’s kill all the public health experts

Now that COVID-19 vaccines and treatments for severe disease are widely available, most countries that have taken full advantage of them are unlikely to return to lockdowns. So what have researchers learnt that can inform decisions when another viral pandemic arrives?

One lesson that Klimek takes from lockdown studies is that there was an early window of opportunity when the virus could have been eliminated — as it was, in effect, in countries such as China, Australia and New Zealand. Had harsher measures been adopted sooner, and more widely, the pandemic might have played out very differently. “I think this is the big learning that we need to take away,” he says.

The paradox is that a successful early clampdown, or hard and fast action against a virus that turns out to be milder than initial indications suggest, could lead to complaints of overreaction.

A future threat might, of course, also spread in a completely different way from COVID-19. Ethical choices could look very different if the next pandemic is caused by an influenza virus that predominantly affects and is spread by young children.

Lockdowns hold another clear lesson: they exacerbate inequalities that already exist in society. Those already living in poverty and insecurity are hit hardest. Guarding against these unequal impacts requires improved health access and financial safeguards when times are good.

And transparency is key, too: the public needs to know more about how pandemic-control policies are decided, says Tsai. “That makes public-health policymaking seem less capricious,” he says, “because it’s reactive to both the science and values.”

Fuck you and the model you rode in on.

tl;dr- We tortured the numbers until they gave us the answer we wanted; we were right.

    • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

Ummmm…might want to check on that

as it was, in effect, in countries such as China, Australia and New Zealand.

      • rhywun

My eyes rolled around so hard I saw the inside of my brain.

“Authoritarian harder and pick my pocket while you’re at it.”

        Yeah, no.

      • Raven Nation

        “as it was in effect”

        Using numbers from here: https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#coronavirus-country-profiles

Percentage of population which contracted covid:
        Australia: 38.9
        NZ: 34.5
        US: 28.5

        Percentage of fatalities/cases:
        Aust: 0.14%
        NZ: 0.11%
        US: 1.1%

        Percentage of deaths/total population:
        Aust: 0.06%
        NZ: 0.04
        US: 0.32

What’s interesting about that to me is that the lockdowns had zero effect on cases. The differences are-obviously-in fatalities. Without knowing how the counts were kept in the antipodes (were they as, umm, fluid as in some US states?), it’s hard to know why the fatality rates were higher. And, of course, I don’t see how the lockdowns would effect death rates.

      • rhywun

I don’t trust any of the numbers yet – and I don’t know if I ever will – but I would argue that the numbers are beside the point.

It wasn’t worth wrecking the economy nor the enormous damage to an entire generation of children. I suspect those effects are going to be even greater in the countries that locked down harder than the US did. (And I wonder why the MSM isn’t talking about them.)

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

The lockdowns were a snow-day for the laptop class, and they do. not. want. to. give. that. up.

      • Gustave Lytton

No one is actually interested in actual truth because their own oxen are in danger of potentially being gored.

      • whiz

Lockdowns can affect deaths because the virus eventually catches up to them, but it is a less severe strain. Of course, that doesn’t account for the increased deaths due to lockdowns.

    • Sean

      🙄

    • Gustave Lytton

One lesson that Klimek takes from lockdown studies is that there was an early window of opportunity when the virus could have been eliminated — as it was, in effect, in countries such as China, Australia and New Zealand. Had harsher measures been adopted sooner, and more widely, the pandemic might have played out very differently. “I think this is the big learning that we need to take away,” he says.

Of course it is. Nevermind that it was spreading earlier than thought at the time, that many of countermeasures used were ineffective or counterproductive, and so on. Maybe if you’d just shot everyone in a designated area, that would have made it work.

      • dbleagle

        Careful. Don’t give them ideas.

      • Gustave Lytton

Millions in ditches thanks to their idealogical kinfolk sez they don’t need me to give them the idea.

I turned on my teevee to warm up for the IndyCar race, and what to my wondering eye should appear but women’s speed rugby; Australia vs New Zealand. Women. Strong fit healthy wholesome athletic women.

    • Chafed

What is speed rugby? Real question.

      • whiz

A taped match on fast forward?

  15. The Late P Brooks

Maybe if you’d just shot everyone in a designated area, that would have made it work.

That was my solution. Just like hoof and mouth. Drive them all into a pit and shoot them, and then burn the bodies.

    Presto! No more sickness.

  16. The Late P Brooks

Wow. Get the ball out to the fleet footed blonde on the sideline.
