Mexico City’s crusade against hipster gentrification has to be the irony story if the year.

<Insert fart joke here>

This was overlooked last week due to the Chilean smackdown.  It lead to a jackboot thug raid on a Hoppean culture center..  Hans Herman Hoppe is certainly a new trick for Argentines.  It might have something to do with this guy.

I guess the charger wasn’t included with the sale of the phone in Brazil?

Meanwhile in California Cuba.

Here’s a totally decent track.  Have a great day!

Decades of underinvestment mean that most infrastructure in Cuba is old and often shoddy. With revenue streams pinched, it’s not clear the state has enough money for upkeep.

While protesters mainly blame the government, experts consulted by NBC said U.S. sanctions on the island — which specifically target energy shipments — make the blackouts worse.

Experts say communism not to blame.

TBF, they must have used a lot of money providing healthcare for all their citizens. I’m sure Michael Moore will be able to explain this.

Free healthcare that doesn’t require energy.

      They’re sanctions, not a blockade.

Cuba could (and easily does) trade with the rest of the world. When I was in Havana back in 2012, I saw workers in the Embassy District using materials and tools that were obviously from Europe and/or South America; there’s no reason they couldn’t buy (for instance) diesel from sources other than the U.S. as well.

The main problem for Cuba is that they have very little that the rest of the world actually wants. The vast majority of their foreign exchange comes from tourism.

      • Raven Nation

“very little that the rest of the world actually wants.”

Mexico’s state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos oil company acknowledged Thursday it released a plume of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, in the Gulf of Mexico late last year, but said it was far smaller than Spanish researchers said.

A report published in June by Spanish university researchers in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters estimated that the leak contained about 40,000 tons of methane.

Oh, man… Petroleos is gonna get a huge fine from the Mexi version of the EPA, aren’t they?

I’m not watching the whole mess — but isn’t there a legal precedent about how “You can’t profit from an illegal act” or some such? Plantiff admitted the purpose was an act of prostitution, which is illegal in Florida…. so they’re SOL as far as I’m concerned.

“I have cancer, but I am thankful for the protection that the cancer vaccine gave me.”

    • The Other Kevin

“To prevent cancers” – so once again, no way of proving that it actually stopped anything. This mRNA stuff is like a license to print money.

      • Ozymandias

It is – they’re also a complete fraud. The tech has never lived up to the hype.
You should read some of the SEC filings and marketing from these choads. It’s all “software of life” and “biohack” and similar gibberish. They really believe that by being able to do gene mapping that now they can just cure everything with “vaccines” targeting the genomics underlying what’s going on in the body.
There is absolutely NO evidence that this works the way they claim it does, of course. None. At least not without incredibly high rates of death in injected animals and absurdly low standards for what counts as success. And that’s of the studies they actually report.
mRNA vaccines will go down in history alongside Piltdown Man and climate change as scientific frauds of the first order. The difference is that Piltdown Man didn’t kill anyone.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

At one time, I thought there might be some promise for mRNA in treating genetic disorders that down-regulate the production of specific proteins or other necessary biochemicals.

Now I think the entire industry should be burnt to the ground.

Nearly two million foreigners touched down at the Mexico City International Airport in the first half of 2022

Well, the amount of people arriving at the airport is completely irrelevant. I can’t help but notice that they don’t ever mention the number of Americans moving there. Clearly that’s because we are a drop in the bucket in a city of tens of millions, and certainly a lower percentage than Mexicans are in most US cities.

    • The Other Kevin

You are the right buyer. Honda made it for the youth market, but “old” people bought it because it was so practical. After that nobody young wanted one.

    Stunning development

Students are divided in their voting preferences, the survey found, but the most consistent division was a surprising one: between women and men. 30 percent of college women identify as Democrats today and only 20 percent identify as Republicans. In elite universities, the difference is greater: 45 percent of women in top-25 ranked colleges identify as Democrats, compared to only 7 percent as Republicans.

What’s surprising is that men in universities have moved in the opposite direction: 39 percent of college men identify as Republicans, almost double the 21 percent who identify as Democrats. And these percentages hold up in elite universities: 40 percent of men in top-25 ranked colleges identify as Republicans, while only 25 percent as Democrats.

It appears that men at universities are moving to the Right as women shift to the Left, in what appears to be the beginning of a backlash.

    No shit, Shirley?

A back;ash? After being shit on and vilified?

    • Urthona

      Colleges need to be stopped.

  29. The Late P Brooks

The good news is that a third of college men and women do not identify as Republicans or Democrats but as independents or unaffiliated, and numerous surveys have shown that many Gen Z students are ideologically up for grabs. This large number of moderates at most universities are more than swing voters; they are a potential alternative to the extremes that are seeping into a new generation.

Instead of trying to find some elusive balance of left and right-leaning voices on campus, the time has come to think systematically about what a political middle might look like at universities, and how to build it.

If universities ignore the gender gap and miss this opportunity to turn polarization around, we will not only see more partisanship but deeper divisions between young, educated women and men. That would be a major hindrance to future cooperation in our democracy. Universities should lean into the middle.

Ah, yes, the elusive mushy moderate middle, who will listen to reason and do what we tell them.

There’s a problem with your thesis about colleges “leaning into the middle”.

Who the fuck do you think has been driving a wedge between men and women on campus in the post-Title-Nine world? Who aggressively stripped away men’s right to defend themselves against allegations of abuse and impropriety?

    • Sean

The good news is that a third of college men and women do not identify as Republicans or Democrats but as independents or unaffiliated

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has said that when a party receives a subpoena that it believes is improper– as we do– you should seek review in court. That is exactly what we have done.
