GlibFit 4.0 – The Empowerment of Failure

by | Oct 16, 2022 | GlibFit | 184 comments

The ninth chapter of Goggins book is Uncommon Amongst Uncommon. We are skipping. In it, Goggins discusses incredibly high-level performance. For those interested in that sort of excellence I recommend reading it. For that matter, I recommend the entire book. But you know that already.

One aspect of Goggins that I greatly appreciate is his candor. Sure, his story ends in a sort of triumph but he details every error, misstep, failure, poor choice, bad judgment, and character flaw along the way. He is a very flawed man and it is his humanity that highlights how each of us is capable of far greater achievements than we acknowledge. At least that’s my opinion.

Goggins’ tenth challenge, summarized, (from his book) is this:

Challenge #10 – Think about your most recent and most heart-wrenching failures. Break out that journal one last time and write them out long-hand.

First, write all the good things, everything that went well from your failures. Be detailed and generous with yourself. A lot of good things will have happened. It’s rarely all bad. Then note how you handled your failure.

How did you think about preparation for and during the execution stage of your failure? You have to know how you were thinking at each step because it’s all about mindset, and that’s where most people fall short.

Now go back through and make a list of things you can fix. Write them all out. Be brutally honest. Study them. Schedule another attempt. If it’s something you can’t repeat, still write it up. You will be able to use that information for other achievements.

And if you fail again, so the fuck be it. Take the pain. Repeat these steps and keep fighting. That’s what it’s all about.

I am certain that last paragraph is 80% of the reason Goggins has achieved all that he has.

Summer has finally ended in SoCal. We are entering what passes for fall in this area. For some reason that takes me back to my college days in the Boston area and the late, lamented WBCN. Based on last week’s comments, DEG will hate me for this week’s music. But fuck it. This is how a late 70s/early 80s live show should sound.

DEG will hate me for this week’s music.

Yeah, that one got old really quickly after I moved to New England.

Have an alternative inspired by Timeloose talking recently talking about a Nathaniel Rateliffe show. It even has a nice Motown feel to it.

I’m back at the gym after the week before’s time off due to not feeling well. I was definitely not as strong as I was before being sick. But, it will come back.

Today has been a lazy day. I started some laundry. I sprayed a ground nesting yellow jacket’s nest. Yep, another one. They got me when I was mowing yesterday. And I’ve been browsing GunBroker. I stumbled on this this WTF.

    I gotta go grocery shopping.

Lots of better J. Geils songs. Radio stations get locked into playing the same crap. Geils on guitar and Magic Dick on harmonica had some great back and forth songs.

Blues, or rock like this:. https://youtu.be/voR_iEXgNQ4

I really dig the bass solo at the end of River Blindness.

The Mighty J. Geils Band! The best live and party band that ever happened. Saw them at the Worcester Centrum Jan. 2nd, 1983. Third night in row they were sold out. The wildest and most fun concert I’ve ever seen.

I miss BCN when I go back to visit. Before my time, Peter Wolf was a DJ there. I did listen to their Rock & Roll rumbles – which launched some great bands like The Fools and this band that I still listen to.

The Tubes were up there as well. Totally phenomenal show, even when they were playing in a glorified hotel lobby.

Huh. Didn’t know Til Tuesday kept going without Aimee Mann.

Started 5/3/1 with BIg but boring 2 weeks ago. Halfway through week 2, but I’m doing 3/week not 4, so the discrepancy. I have been sore pretty much straight through, but I am definitely getting stronger after a long time on a plateau and I’m gaining weight again. It was nearly immediate. 5×10 “assistance” after a big lift is whipping my ass, but in a not-quite-injuring-me way. Damn is my lower back surprised by the new volume.

    • R C Dean

      *scratches head, moves on*

    • Tundra

I did 5/3/1 and did very well with it. I usually went longer on the deload week as he recommended in later editions.

I only switched back to a SS type program from The Barbell Prescription because I prefer to squat more often (and I’m old).

Glad to hear that you blasted past the plateau! Good luck!

Doing ok with dead lifts – def seem to be helping back – but now I’m redeveloping tennis/golf elbow. At least I have some stretches I can work with buy seems to impact a lot of my movements.

On the plus side I did finally finish my knee PT – finally back to running without pain (indoors at least) at a reasonable pace. That gives me another nice alternative.

    • Brett L

I’ve had tennis/golf elbow for about six months now. I blame two babies in 17 months. There’s a little aircast thing FdA recommended to me that seems to do enough to not make it worse. I reckon without taking six weeks off from lifting weights and carrying babies mine is only going to get so good.

      This: https://www.amazon.com/Tendonitis-Golfers-Forearm-Compression-Neoprene/dp/B09JNSGZX1/

It does just enough to keep me in the gym.

Rippetoe talks about this all the time. Search the Starting Strength site for the program for fixing it.

I am too. Failure is certainly more common than success – at least for people trying to do difficult things.

I am nearing the end of my 30 day reset. I am gonna continue the low carb thing (and no beer). I can’t believe how much better my joints feel. And I am still too fluffy around the middle.

GlibFit was sub-par this week as I had a business trip. Only lifted twice, but still made good food choices. Happy to be back in the saddle though. Yesterday, we did a 5 mile hike (1150 ft gain) to a place called Shadow Caanyon.

The weather was spectacular and it looked like this. No excuse out here for not getting the miles in. I fucking love it.

    Have a great week Glibfitters!

    • Brett L

1150 is no joke on a 5 miler. Nice!

      • Tundra

It was steep but steady. And the terrain was pretty gentle. We did one recently that was over 700 in about .75 mile. Heart was going pretty good on that one!

    • Sean

“I can’t believe how much better my joints feel.”

      I can believe it. 👍👍

I’ve been dealing with a rotator cuff issue (left shoulder) for couple years. I think it’s from all the years sitting at a desk job. It limits my bench press and overhead press-type exercises. I haven’t brought it up to a doctor yet, as it doesn’t seem terrible. I’ve been doing various elastic band exercises to address it. Also I’ve chosen pressing exercises that are not supposed to aggravate it: slight incline dumbbell bench press and Arnold presses.

It has gotten better over time. And I recently saw a youtube video where it was recommended to hang from a chinup bar to “fix” it. So, I started doing hangs a couple months ago. I should be doing them every day, but probably average about 4 days/week. I have increased my hang time from about 20 seconds to a full minute. It does seem to feel better after the hang.

Anyone else have experience dealing with rotator cuff injuries?

    • Tundra

Yes. About 10 years ago I was told I was going to need surgery. For reference, I couldn’t reach up and get something out of the fridge or cupboard. A hockey buddy said fuck no. Try fixing it yourself.

So I bought this. And followed his instruction.

I also started hanging every day. Here’s a program you could try. I still hang before I lift. It’s magic.

Fast forward and I am able to do everything. My shoulders are 55 years old, so they will never be perfect, but I highly recommend staying the fuck away from the scalpel until you try the basics.

      Good luck!

      • Annoyed Nomad

Thank you! I will definitely check those out.

Mine is similar – I can reach up to higher cupboards, but there was/is some impingement/pain (reduced since I started addressing it). My shoulders are 61 years old, so I understand they won’t work like they did decades ago, but want them to be the best possible (without surgery).

It’s really helpful to hear from someone who has gone through it.

      • Chafed

        👍

    • Mojeaux

I tore mine straight up, slipping on ice and catching myself. I was in tears the whole birthday party I had come to. I let it go for years just getting steroid injections because I could still lift. Lifted something, tore more. OMG that hurt, and I was in tears for days. But I could still function with steroid injectons. I started losing strength gradually over the next couple of years. Went to the ortho. Schedule surgery immediately, but it was the beginning of summer and I had DIY projects coming out my eyeballs. More injections. Two years later, I can’t lift a framing nailer and I’m done. Ortho’s pissed I waited so long and now the tissue has deteriorated A LOT, so instead of a four-point anchor repair, I only have 3, and he predicts I’ll have to have a reverse total shoulder in 10 years. That was 6 years ago. I haven’t done much with my shoulder since then, gunshy, trying not to do anything that will make his prediction come true.

I honestly don’t know if I SHOULD work it or not, because either way, if I choose wrongly, that 10 years will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

      • Annoyed Nomad

Oh wow. That’s make me wince just reading it. I don’t recall doing anything in particular to cause the problem. I think it was being hunched over a desk and not doing any regular exercise for years. Since I’m right-handed the left shoulder wasn’t activated much and the ligaments (I think that’s right) shortened up, resulting in the problem.

      • Mojeaux

Well, I’m just giving a different perspective from “fix it yourself.” I’m sure that’s a valid strategy, but it wasn’t an option for frank tears. What I DON’T know is if I should NOW be following the “fix it yourself” advice.

      • Tres Cool

        Frank tears- a PMS-ing fräulein ?

*OK, now Im going to bed

      • Tundra

        Work it.

        I’ll send you some stuff.

    • DEG

I was developing some shoulder pain a few years ago, right around when I started working with a trainer. He wondered if, based on some stuff he me do, if I had a strength imbalance between my chest and back.

He had me do a lot of back work.

After a couple months, no more pain.

    • whiz

I’ve been having some (right) shoulder pain at night (I sleep on my side). It hurts when I sleep on it, and it hurts when I sleep on the other side and the arm is hanging down. I think it is a mild rotator cuff problem due to playing a lot of tennis (serving really hard) in my younger years (I’m 67 now). I went to our local physical therapy clinic; they do a first-time-for-free assessment. They gave me a set of shoulder exercises to do using small weights and a stretchy band.

These exercises seem to work; after a few days, the pain goes away. Although if I stop the exercises, the pain comes back.

This may not work for more serious rotator cuff problems; I can still do (modest) bench and shoulder presses without a problem, it’s only lying on my side that causes a problem. But the exercises sure helped me.

    • straffinrun

Yep. Went to a shoulder specialist (in addition to other docs) and no help. I did the bands. No help. A simple stretching exercise helped more than anything else: Stretch arms straight up, reaching for the sky. Left hand palm facing out left and right hand palm facing out right. Like how an elite swimmer enters the water off the blocks. Give it a shot.

  7. Mojeaux

So I was at college and just drowning/tanking very badly in my quest to live up to my parents’ expectations. My mom says, “It doesn’t matter if you fall. It only matters that you get up again.” Well, yanno, Mom, I coulda used that a lot earlier in my life instead of high expectations that couldn’t be met and were not forgiven. As a mom now, I can see how it’s easy to forget to give your kids latitude to fail.

    • Don escaped Texas

I’d go further: giving your kids a safe way to fail early in their development is one of the best forms of parenting

helicoptered kids are no where near as resourceful or resilient as the rest

I gave up on scouting about ten years ago, but here’s a typical scenario from when it was great for my son:
      * scouts vote on campout menu
      * scouts shop for their own food
      * scouts go camping with ground beef and french fries and even cooking oil for dinner
      * scouts start fire and then knock it down for coals to cook over
      * scouts fry burgers and fries
      * scout look around for slotted spoon that no one has
      * scouts fish fries out of hot oil with oak twigs
      * scouts eat just fine, learn a lesson, and live happily ever after

    Alternative take on GlibFit:

Ergonomics! I got my evaluation last week and will be the proud owner (well, user, to be more accurate) of a sweet new chair, a new keyboard and trackball thingy, and adjustable monitor stands.

It really does make a difference, especially if you’ve ever fractured your vertebrae or have scoliosis (both, in my case).

    • Tres Cool

I’m not going to address the obvious lower back pain issue….Im a classy fuckin’ gentleman like that.

      • hayeksplosives

The tale of my back fracture is short but bizarre in retrospect. I had a grand mal seizure and was in the ER, had another one that was so intense and prolonged that I fractured my own bones with my muscles.

Technically it was “status epilepticus” so they had to inject something into me at the 5 minute mark to stop it.

Kind of sucks to have your brain trying to kill you.

  9. Tres Cool

Ive had shoulder problems for about the past 20 years. The left is worse, and when it gets angry (usually 48-72 hours after I do something stupid to it) I have the benefit of having chest pains that radiate down my L arm, tingling in the finger tips, and tightness across the chest. Coming from a family with a robust history of heart problems, this of course causes anxiety. It took a heart cath to determine that (at the time) my coronary arteries are clear, and instead of chest pain radiating OUT, it was shoulder pain radiating IN. I take piles of NSAIDs, 60 mg of Baclofen (should be shoulder-fen, amirite) daily, and keep it swathed in lidocaine patches. My former GP beat into my head “dont ever, ever, EVER, get that cut on until the pain is unbearable. The best ortho on the planet can dig into a healthy shoulder and ruin it.”

Jugsy ordered Little Ceasar’s for some reason. For those that do low-carb, the toppings are almost impossible to separate from the crust. Im going to bed.

    Obligatory

I got to experience some winter weather Friday with a morning temperature of 6 degrees in Fairbanks. Now I’m back home with some nice early fall PNW weather. 45 in the am and 75 in the afternoon.

    • Gustave Lytton

Leaves here are starting to come down in earnest now. Forestry Dept still wants to maintain the fiction we’re in fire season and using gas powered tools after 1pm will burn down the state. Fuck em. I hear my neighbors practicing Irish democracy as well. Rains start later this week so that shit needs to get cleaned up asap before they get soggyfied mess.

      • Rat on a train

My trees are turning but I haven’t needed to mow the leaves yet. When it starts it goes for weeks as the different trees stagger dropping leaves.

      • Gustave Lytton

Yeah, even trees of the same species/same height/same yard don’t drop all at once. Big leaf maples are my main leaf producers. One is almost bare but most are only half gone and a couple are still green.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Leaves are dropping here as well. It is a nice swing into fall, but everyone is starting to look for rain. Oh well.

As far as Glibfit, started doing my workouts again, so I got that going for me. Which is nice. Also, little dog is antsy, and walks are in order, so I got that going for me. Which is nice. Wife has been having gall bladder issues, but really doesn’t want surgery, so we are getting a lot of dietary changes, to keep her feeling better. Which is… OK. I am not really a food person, so I am not missing much as it is mostly cutting out fat anyway. Fuck cheese, good riddance.

      • Gender Traitor

        Fuck cheese, good riddance.

The defenses on both teams has been amazing. Who had tied at 10 at the half?

Also, that was a ridiculous kick.

    • Mojeaux

      Ditto. I am highly impressed.

      • Lackadaisical

No team is more dangerous then KC with a minute left.

I hate this part of the game.

      • Lackadaisical

        That’s a HUGE! Interception.

Probably the best game we’ll see until the playoffs.

      • rhywun

        I’m liking it better now.

  12. Mojeaux

    Excellent game. ‘Grats!

    • hayeksplosives

Truly the best game today, and that’s a high bar among several that came down to the wire.

I believe we just saw a preview of the AFC championship game.

  13. Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

What the hell is wrong with people? Why do they try to talk to me like I was a 12 year old girl? I Do Not Text! I am an adult, when I get home, I plug my phone in and unless it rings, I don’t look at the damn thing. But, noooooo. People text me, and then wonder why I don’t respond. I told them “I don’t text!” I am not a child, talk to me on the phone like a normal human being.

    Son of a Bitch.

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

I get it, but from their point of view, texting is asynchronous and non-demanding, and maybe they think they’re being thoughtful to you.

      • rhywun

I kind of prefer it, but I prefer writing to speaking as it is.

My Mac had texting on it – since I switched back to Windows I don’t know if there is something similar and I don’t care enough to look.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

I love email, and vastly prefer it. I get a header stating what it is about, I can file, flag or delete as necessary, and respond in real sentences. I don’t have especially fat fingers, but trying to stab repeatedly with my right forefinger on a touch screen tries whatever patience I have.

      • rhywun

Oh yeah, email FTW. Texting is for “I want a reply now”.

      • Fourscore

My phone is smarter than I am. Emails or leave a message.

    • Ted S.

Pretty much the only people who text me are my sisters. It’s an easy way to send pictures on holidays and whatnot.

    • Sean

So you don’t want any dick pics either?

      • Ted S.

        Just *your* dick pics.

      • Sean

        *kicks pebble*

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Heh. The SOB line came from an old Cheech and Chong bit I heard decades ago, and it stuck with me.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

        That is indeed the bit!

    • Gustave Lytton

talk to me on the phone like a normal human being

On that demanding intrusive device? Like a common servant or a tradesman? Turn in your monocle! Letters, good sir!

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

No, send an orphan to deliver your missive!

If I am displeased, I will need a whipping boy.

  14. MikeS

    texting is asynchronous and non-demanding

This is exactly why I prefer it. And I’m 50, so it’s not like texting is only something the youngsters do. Hell, I have aunts and uncles in their 70s+ that are regular texters.

    • The Hyperbole

Yep, I’ve come around on the issue, I used to be on Zwak’s side but now I prefer text to calls. I don’t have to stop what I’m doing and talk to another human being *shudders*, I can answer at my leisure. Also, giving people bad news (Not ‘someone died’ bad news but ‘that part I need is six weeks out’ bad news) Is easier when you don’t have to listen to them whinge about it in real time.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Oh, I get the “reasons”, but so many of us don’t walk around with a phone glued to our hands. Maybe, if I don’t respond in an hour, call?

Also, while my wife loves to text for work and what not, she gets so many* every day that a lot go missed, also leaving the other person in a “don’t you like/respect/value/whatever me” from too many people.

*seriously, she gets hundreds per work day, starting long before she wakes.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

        Hundreds?

Hell no, I’m not putting up with that.

      • rhywun

Yeah hell no. Texting is for friends and family only. I get zero from work – even when I’m on call at night a couple times a month it’s a phone call.

      • Sean

My boss sends email sized texts. Occasionally. But still…

On the flip side, I’m indispensable and he knows it.

      • MikeS

she gets hundreds per work day, starting long before she wakes.

That get’s a big ol’ “fuck no” from me. Like Rhywun says, it’s for friends and family only. Maybe a work text every 3 months or so.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Back in my account manager days, often during the initial part of a stand-up I would get hundreds of emails in a day, and once exceeded 700. It is a whole new level of pain, and should only be contemplated on the tree of woe.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

No, wait. 300 was the most I ever got in a day. I don’t know were the 7 came from.

      • Fourscore

I go days without an email. Some of my friends don’t use computers, some don’t email. Generational thing.

      • MikeS

Receiving 300 emails in a day is part of the 7th circle of hell. Words are violence.

      • rhywun

I get hundreds of emails a day but the vast majority are notification messages for processes I’m not involved in and are easy to route the hell out of my inbox.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

These were all looking for direct info that I was in place to provide.

The hell really came from the fact they all used inside terminology for the company we were supporting, there were multiple emails looking for the same info (they had fucked up the process which lead to bad info going to us which fucked up every bit of the logistics of what we were trying to do.) And they had a domineering, top down management structure that led to multiple gate keepers of information flow. A bunch of data hoarders.

God, now I am speaking in the same business vernacular I came to loath.

      • Raven Nation

The decline in incoming e-mails is the clearest sign that I am no longer department chair.

    • kinnath

      texting is asynchronous and non-demanding

Exactly. That’s what it’s for. But many youngsters live with their nose pinned to a phone and get pissed if they don’t get an immediate response.

I like text. If fills a temporal gap between voice calls and email.

    • Mojeaux

Yes. My mom is almost 80 and prefers to text, as do I.

I need a paper trail for everything. I insist on it with my clients. Texting, email. If they insist on a phone call, I make them talk slowly so I can take notes.

  15. Sean

The Walgreen vaccines commercials inspire an irrational anger in me. Not very stoic.

    • rhywun

Is that the one with “I jabbed hundreds of people”? Yeah, enraging.

      • Sean

        Ayup.

  16. Sean

  18. Not Adahn

The first non-M/GM doesn’t show up until 35, with an A class Open shooter. And the second one (also an A) doesn’t show up until 50th place.

I travel a lot. But I love home.

      • Tundra

Yep. I added him to my follows after that.

And that one gets me, too.

        Hope you are well, Pud!

      • PudPaisley

Doing good. I love this time of year.

It looks like Colorado is treating you well. Nice views in your pictures. I hope the work stress is getting better for you.

I made a life changing decision recently that I’m looking forward to: I’m cutting way back on snow removal services this winter and completely getting out of it after this winter. I’ve never had more than 7 days off where I wasn’t on call for snow since college. I plan on doing some traveling next winter.

      • Tundra

Yep, everything is good. I love it out here.

I like your plan. I hope Colorado is on your travel list! I’ve got some good hikes for us.

        Let me know!

      • PudPaisley

I’ll for sure be hitting up Colorado next winter or the one after. I have some relatives in Longmont I need to visit and fit in some skiing while there. I’d definitely be up for some hikes.

      • MikeS

What da heck? He only has 4 videos on his channel now. Where’d they all go?

      • MikeS

Oh shit…but he’s on Amazon Music now! Cool. Adding him to my library.

      • PudPaisley

Not sure. I have a bunch of live stuff on my channel. I recorded this album release show in Madison this spring. It turned out pretty good. Audio is as recorded minus some compression. There’s a killer Johnny Paycheck cover with some guest musicians towards the end. Also a good Zeppelin cover. Song list in description. The whole show is good.

        https://youtu.be/dTk2zHK7YU0

      • MikeS

Ah. I forgot/didn’t realize I was watching most of those videos on you channel, not his.

      • PudPaisley

All of his stuff is on Spotify too, or at least it was last time I checked.

      • PudPaisley

I’ve got a bunch of good stuff that I never got around to editing. I’ll probably do that this winter when I have more free time and throw it up on my channel. I have a Willie and Waylon tribute show that I recorded that was great. Hopefully it turned out good enough to post when I go through it. I also got some good stuff from his Deecefest festival this summer. One of the bands he’s playing with has a keyboard player that Tundra has played hockey with over the years. Small world.

      • MikeS

Cool. I’d still love to see him live. Is he currently touring?

      • PudPaisley

He’s got primary custody of his two sons, so he mostly does regional shows. I’ll let you know if I see anything up your way. He plays Minneapolis quite often. Is that too far of a drive? He usually plays a couple festivals in the summer NW of Minneapolis. This week he’s in La Crosse, Rochester, and Iowa City.

He used to play with this guy in La Crosse all the time until he hit it big on the Voice. He toured with him around the country for a while until he got custody of his kids. They even got flown to California by Jackson Browne to play his end of tour party. He got to play Jackson’s guitars for the show. I think it happened twice.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzNlljQ7i4A

Nick will be reprising his role as Dr John for an excellent Last Waltz tribute that Cheech put on about 10 years ago in La Crosse. He had about 30 musicians for the show! Unfortunately it’s over Thanksgiving and I’ll be out of town.

      • Tundra

Lol. Eddie is one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met.

        Goalie AND keyboardist!

    • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

It was wonderful meeting the two of you. Say hi to the wife for me, and I am glad you are home safe.

    • Tundra

I’m looking forward to logging those miles. I’m glad you and Mrs. Hobbit made it home safe.

    • Sean

I had no hobbit visits. 😕

What’s the difference between a BMW and porcupine?

In this case it appears in CA we now need to replace BMW with Tesla. I must say I admire this guy’s dedication to camouflage.

    https://i.redd.it/e6kn9rid54u91.jpg

Right down to the center caps on the wheels! I probably would choose another brand, but I’ve seen them done up Honda as well.

    • MikeS

Is this a Tesla badged up as an Audi? What would be the reason for doing this? I also don’t get the reference to BMW.

      Signed,
      Confused

      • Sensei

What’s the difference between a BMW and porcupine?

With a porcupine the prick is on the outside.

Yes, this is Tesla model 3 badged as an Audi. There is a fair amount of road rage and vandalism directed a Tesla owners in various parts of the country.

      • MikeS

With a porcupine the prick is on the outside.

        Heh. I like that.

There is a fair amount of road rage and vandalism directed a Tesla owners in various parts of the country.

Wow. I can’t imagine having to worry about what brand of vehicle I drive. Fucked up times.

      • Sensei

Think driving an Asian import in parts of Michigan in the 70s and 80s.

Fortunately around NJ our road rage is not brand specific.

      • MikeS

Hell, I looked down on Asian import drivers in North Dakota in the 80’s. I can’t imagine how they were looked at in Detroit.

That said, rebadging car to hide it’s true pedigree seems extreme. And if it is necessary, that’s crazy.

There’s lots there to think about here. My initial reaction is move. Or buy a different brand.

      • rhywun

Think driving an Asian import in parts of Michigan in the 70s and 80s.

I can grok that one but I don’t get the Tesla thing.

Plus all cars look alike anyway now so why bother.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

There’s got to be a lot of Californians still left who are bent about the push to electric and looking for someone to take it out on.

      • Sean

Yeah, but you’re still in NJ. #fail.

      • hayeksplosives

When I flew to Shreveport for a job interview with General Motors after college (late nineties), the recruiter cautioned me to be sure and rent a GM car became obviously the Union goons would vandalize it.

He said it so casually, like it should be obvious that any non-GM car was subject to vandalism that I was rather turned off by the company culture.

However, I did use their offer letter as a bargaining chip to other prospective employers, so Thanks, GM!

  21. Tres Cool

    Im off to work, kids.
    Leave a light on.

    • MikeS

If Muppets shed tears, Rufus has a single tear soaking into his felt cheek right now.

    • Gustave Lytton

Trace Adkins would leave than one on.

  22. Brochettaward

Fuck with The Firster, get the horns.

A warning to all, but some more than others.

    • MikeS

I’ve got the Bro by the horns on a downhill drag,
Firsts are better than they ever have been.
Yeah I never missed a Firstin’ in my lifetime,
And I’m surely gonna First again,
      I’m surely gonna First again.

  23. Ownbestenemy

And dumb ass teens were smoking in their room….good fucking God take a walk! Wrath of OBE and Mrs OBE is terrifying

    • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

      Cigarettes or pot?

      • Ownbestenemy

        Pot…while we were 10 feet away…no open windows…geesh idiots

      • rhywun

I had a friend in junior high who smoked cigarettes – I had no idea until we went to his attic and he just casually whipped one out and lit up. That’s about as rebel-adjacent as I ever got.

His mom pulled him out and sent him to Catholic school

      • CPRM

Or at least breathe out through a TP roll with a dryer sheet stuck on the end.

      • Sean

        BTDT.

      • Gender Traitor

So…did you chastise them for smoking or for not concealing it better, complete with instructions on how best to do the latter?

  24. CPRM

“Pants? Where we’re going we don’t need pants.” Would be a great hook-up line at a Back to the Future convention. But for me it only means it is laundry night.

    • rhywun

Pfft. I’m annoyed when my doorbell rings unexpectedly and I have to put pants on.

      • Sean

        Living your best life?

  25. Sean

Fuck, more chilly temps this week. Gonna have to cover the plants each night. 😠

    • Rat on a train

This morning was nice enough to walk without a jacket. The rest of the week it will be in the 30s.

      • Sean

I wish I could say, screw it. Production was real low this year though and I don’t want to waste the last of the fruit that set.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

      *checks pic*
      Yep, meth…my money’s on meth.

    • robodruid

Before next summer, they will have gone through all of our ready stockpiles of munitions. If this is still going on next summer, Russia will win.

  26. DEG

    Mornin’ all. Gym time.

Kinda chilly here. 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, DEG! Stay warm and be careful at the gym!

  27. Gender Traitor

Good morning, Stinky, Sean, and RoaT!

Biggest problem this morning (so far – ::knocks wood vigorously::) is that I realized I’d forgotten to get more creamer for my all-important coffee. Available alternatives: skim milk or almond milk (procured to make “golden milk,” which has turmeric – anti-inflammatory FTW! – cinnamon, ginger, and a little almond butter. Pretty tasty, but I need to work on getting the almond butter to mix in better.) Decided the almond milk was probably preferable to the cloudy water. Verdict: it didn’t ruin the coffee, but I think I’ll be sure to pick up more of the powdered stuff after work today.

Problems don’t get much more First World than that.

    • Ted S.

You could just drink the coffee black like us Real Firsters do.

      • Gender Traitor

I care not a whit for this “Firsting” nonsense, I’m the youngest of three girls, so from birth, my life has exemplified the concept of saving the best for last.

      • Gender Traitor

…and I CAN stand to drink my coffee without creamer but not without sugar or sweetener. At the moment, the creamer is almost as much for (theoretically) making the coffee easier on my otherwise empty stomach, since I’m also dosing myself with ibuprofen as soon as I get up in the morning.

      • Grosspatzer

Ibuprofen in the morning? That does not sound good (sciatica?)

Hope that gets better real soon. Ibuprofen can do a number on your stomach.

      • Gender Traitor

Yeah, the “sudden-onset sciatica,” assuming that’s really what it is. That’s the working theory, anyway. Nighttime seems to be the worst time for it. I have high hopes, however, for the water aerobics class I just started attending at the Y, Really enjoying being back in the water, and the exercises give the legs a good workout!

      • Gender Traitor

Wow! I kinda sorta almost remember that one! Pretty good, since I don’t think I was listening to the radio much around the time it came out!

        Good morning, Ted’S!

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, U! How are you today?

      • UnCivilServant

I woke up around the time I usually leave the house, so I was convinced I’d arrive late to the office. I made it on time, but it was not a happy morning so far.

      • Gender Traitor

I hope it all gets better from here!

      • UnCivilServant

Well, I’ve had breakfast, and it’s too early for coworkers to arrive, so it’s quiet for the moment. No emergencies in my email, and the upside of not knowing what your job is is that you can’t be stressed about not doing it.

      • Gender Traitor

See? Things are looking up already! 😁 (No Monday morning email emergencies is especially good!) What time do most folks roll in to the office? Our official start time is 8:30, but some people arrive earlier and take a longer lunch. Most of us in-person types stick around until 5:00 regardless.

      • UnCivilServant

        Well, the first just arrived.

Within my team we ended up with staggered start times 7,730,8,830, so that we had staggered departure times and a wider span of coverage for incidents.

  28. Grosspatzer

    Mornin’, reprobates!

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, ‘patzie? How is life treating you?

The only baseball match-up I care about is dragging on to a fifth game. Go Artists Formerly Known As Indians! Beat those damn Yankees!

      • Rat on a train

I would like a Cleveland-San Diego World Series. Not that I will watch.

      • Grosspatzer

Mornin’. I am done with baseball, time for football and hockey. Locals look promising, so the inevitable failures will be more painful.

      • Gender Traitor

That’s the spirit! 😉 Uncomfortably familiar with that, thanks to the Dayton Dragons! The downside of minor league ball – if you start the season doing well, the best players get kicked upstairs for the second half.

  29. Rat on a train

DST needs to end earlier (or completely). It is too dark for kids to be walking to the school bus stop.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

But then they won’t have time to harvest the crops after they get home from school.

      • Rat on a train

The orphans have plenty of time during the day since they don’t go to school.

    • Gender Traitor

I started going to the 6 p.m. water aerobics class at the Y last week and was unpleasantly surprised by how dark it was when I came out shortly after 7:00. Pretty soon it’ll be dark when I leave work at 5:00.

      • AlexinCT

Definitely will be the case on Nov 6th.

  30. Not Adahn

Morning! It’s been an exhausting week. Now two days of class and five more of shooting.
