Resolved

by | Nov 2, 2022 | Musings | 130 comments

I have decided to winter here in Manistee again, my plans are on hold for now. I am ready for another season including the Winter disc league. Lizard that I may be, winter is a challenge I accept. Now maybe I can see what MI has to offer, hehe.

View from my van

Resolved it were, to be obscure,

amidst the shredded grey,

as wind shakes my very van,

I look on in wonderment, and smile,

the days are short by design, and everything dies,

but for the season,

left to endure, as it was and is,

the storm is upon me,

again,

rain turns to ice and hail, pelting my face,

as I laugh, snapping away,

evil waves and mighty north winds,

yet I stand my ground,

barely

darkness fills today and the morrow,

what shadows cast are long,

and deep violet,

as cascades of necrotic colour awaits,

in the coming dark time,

the day yet exists, and thriving,

I shall use it,

searching for beauty in the barren,

collecting another vision,

living another dream,

as we begin the long night,

again

    Hey Yusef. I like this.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      Thanks

  3. DEG

    colour

    Brit spelling. Nice!

    I like it.

    • Lackadaisical

      Boo.

Otherwise it was a good one, better than your usual Yusef, you’re improving.

    • hayeksplosives

“grey” instead of “gray” is also Brit.

  4. R.J.

“Necrotic colour” is my favorite part. And I agree with DEG, the British spelling is nice.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      I loved that line, thanks!

    • MikeS

If he had any horse sense he’d get a paternity test.

  5. Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

the days are short by design

    That’s a good line.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

Depends, are we talking blondes or booze?

      • R.J.

        Or cheese?

      • MikeS

        Or meatballs?

    • Fourscore

I’m not surprised that there isn’t any starting bid.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

They’d happily imprison every dissident while demanding your forgiveness.

    • juris imprudent

Oh it was right there in that Atlantic bit about the amnesty being very one-way, and without the slightest admission of having done anything wrong other than maybe, well, being a bit too enthusiastic.

      Pound sand.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Pretty much every comment I have seen on it comes down to; you need to admit wrong first, and then we can talk amnesty.

But there is still waaaaaaay too much anger for any “forgiveness” to be given.

      • MikeS

My mom died alone in a hospital room. They’ll be lucky if I don’t…

Let’s just say amnesty is not something I will be granting. Ever.

      • MikeS

I just read that fucking cunt’s Atlantic piece. If this is how they are going to “admit fault”…I don’t know. I don’t know.

      • Lackadaisical

Sorry man. The past three years have been a shit show.

      • MikeS

Thanks, Lack. They certainly have. And without accountability, it’ll happen again. Sooner than later.

      • Q Continuum

They can all get fucked by a rusty chainsaw.

    • Lackadaisical

Jesus, still a thing? And something the cops will get you for? Glad I left NY.

      • rhywun

Presumably a health-care worker, heroes to zeroes etc.

        Disgusting.

      • Ted S.

        Yeah, a health care worker.

Obviously, one can tell who read the article. 😉

      • rhywun

I DID read the article and “presenting a forged COVID vaccination card to an Albany healthcare facility to meet a job requirement” wasn’t exactly the model of clarity.

      • Lackadaisical

Exactly, could just as easily be a clerical worker who was still required to follow some policy.

  6. juris imprudent

    Good stuff Yusef.

  7. Tundra

    Lovely, Yusef.

  9. Fourscore

I’m sending you some snow next week, Yusef. Forecast (subject to change) for about 10 inches, Get a pair of snow shoes and take a hike. Glad to hear you are in with the cold crowd, now I don’t feel quite so stupid.

Got a call from the lady the looks after our bees in the off season. A bear visited last night, she said a lot of damage, I’ll go tomorrow and see what I can reassemble. The bees were not happy today, she said.

The fall has been so nice the bears are still out and about apparently.

    • juris imprudent

Heard on the news/weather earlier this evening that we’re not expecting anything average or below until middle of the month.

    • pistoffnick

Cold weather makes the bucks horny.

Good luck hunting this weekend, Fourscore.

      • Fourscore

Same with you, Nick. Stop by if you get a chance. Week end weather should be OK, then rain and snow next week scheduled.

      • MikeS

I recently was gifted a smoker. Last weekend I made honey glazed smoked salmon. The honey stole the show!

      • UnCivilServant

Did you get the show back?

      • MikeS

It was sticky business, but I did.

      • Fourscore

Hey, I like smoked salmon, I usually cop any leftover at HH time and hide it.

      • MikeS

I will definitely be bringing some next year. (I hope Nick doesn’t get pissed)

      • The Hyperbole

Offset, pellet, electric, old gym locker?

      • MikeS

Pellet. A Camp Chef. Burgers are amazing. I don’t ever want a boring old fried burger again. And the salmon was amazeballs.

      • The Hyperbole

In today’s BBQ outdoor meat cooking world (do you want pedants, because that is how you get pedants) regular old burgers and brats may as well be salad, and I’m good with that. When it’s your turn to cook for game day you best be marinating something, at the least. Fucker brought lamb chops a few weeks, salt and pepper and threw them on the grill ( and over cooked most of them), no sides no nothing. Bullshit.

      • MikeS

My salmon (mostly because of poor timing) took two days prep and five hours smoking. First a brine soak, then a rest to develop at pellicle. I’ll do better next time, but even done right you’d be hard pressed to do it in 24 hours.

      • MikeS

IT’s early days in my meat smoking career, but I’m thinking I’m gonna focus on fish. A. I like it. 2. It’s not what everyone else is doing. I’ll definitely do beef/pork/chicken/whatever, but I really want to get good at smoking fish.

      • Mojeaux

        Wait wait wait wait wait.

No beans? No potato salad?! No macaroni salad?!! No cole slaw?!!! No cheesy corn?!!!!

        OFF WITH HIS HEAD!

      • MikeS

        OFF WITH HIS HEAD!

Without more details, I’ll tentatively side with Lamb Chop. I would assume sides would be provided by the host if I’m bringing the meat*.

        *not a euphemism.

      • Not Adahn

Hoover’s on Manor Road in Austin cooks their hamburgers in their smoker. Amazeballs confirmed.

      • kinnath

I got to choose a service award at work. I picked a Weber charcoal smoker. That should show up soon. Just in time for winter in Iowa.

      • MikeS

Have you checked Weber’s website to see if they have a “blanket” for it? I have one for mine; my son-in-law used it year-round in MSP.

      • kinnath

Not yet. Just ordered it yesterday. So, no idea what else I need to get yet.

    • R.J.

Dear Lord, make that available for free streaming as soon as possible.

  10. kinnath

What in the ever loving fuck is going on.

Youtube is now suggesting videos of nude yoga and other assorted nudity videos completely out of the blue.

    This must be Elon’s fault.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Careful. Next thing you know you’ll be breaking in to Pelosi’s house.

    • robodruid

While i did look slightly and did see some spicy stuff on youtube. I did not get “recommendations”.

Also, I just got home and got on the zoomie if you want to stop in.

      • MikeS

I want to, but I’d better get to bed. I have to be on the road by 6:30

  12. Yusef drives a Kia

Things are going swimmingly up here,
We just opened our new 18 hole course and got new signage for the home course. With three courses now, Manistee is on the map yippee!🥏

    • MikeS

That’s great, Yusef. Article in the works?

    • R C Dean

That’s awesome. You are an inspiration, Yusef.

Of interest to DEG and, perhaps, others – local news came on after the baseball and is showing Maggie Hassan trailing her challenger, Dan Bolduc, albeit by only 1%.

    • DEG

Don Bolduc is too much of a warmonger for me to vote for him, but despite that, I like that he will probably show Hassan the door.

  14. Gustave Lytton

Winter is here. Snow on the ground, light snow during the drive today. Not much of a fall this year.

Another night in a hotel and the missus, though she said it was ok, is clearly not.

  15. Ownbestenemy

I am willing to dontate 8/month for the official Glib twatter account to be check marked for the funsies of it.

    • Lackadaisical

      Ha!

Needs the family friendly seal on it too.

  16. hayeksplosives

Good poem, Yusef. The cold is one thing, but the darkness is the worst.

This poem is reminiscent of Ancient Greek poems, which often used seasonal changes as metaphors for the transitory nature of life.

But they also often pointed out that life is cyclical.

Spring will come, the sun will rise.

  17. Sean

    ‘Sup Glibs?

  18. Rat on a train

Good morning Glibnation. How did Brandon’s panic attack go last night? I didn’t pay attention and haven’t read the reviews.

  19. Sean

“I know some people are asking ‘Why didn’t two grown men do anything to help?’” the student witness said. “I understand the teachers can get in trouble for touching students, but when you’re seeing something like that, like a girl beaten so brutally, like someone has to step in.”

Letters were sent out to parents saying counselors would be on hand to help traumatized students who witnessed the incident

We will do everything in our power … to provide counseling after your child is harmed.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

They’re afraid of getting fired and sued into bankruptcy by an ambulance chasing sleazeball. I can recall a couple of hallway fights back in my highschool days where a teacher jumped in and then had to slug it out with a student but that was considered a risk of the job. Those days are unfortunately over.

      • Fourscore

I did the same thing when I was doing my student teaching. I saved the little guy from a whoopin’ but he sort of threatened me, “I’ll get you” . He was in one of my classes but not a problem. I saw him months later at a convenience store and we were on good terms.

Stopping a fight goes with the job, like a cop in a shooting.

      • The Last American Hero

Our school hired a 20 year old guy who was willing to keep the peace, but would have been thrown to the wolves if the lawyers came knocking.

    • Sean

      Hey.

    • DEG

Reminds me of the days when I cared about baseball.

I stopped caring because it was too predictable: The Phillies lose. And lose badly.

  21. robodruid

    Good Morning:
How bad must it be for the Dems? In Oklahoma they did not televise presidents speech at all.

Looking forward to bitching about all the RINO’s not doing anything worthwhile.

    • Sean

Beats paying $20 for a pack of paper plates.

      • Fourscore

Or $5.69 for a head of worn out looking lettuce in Podunkville

  22. DEG

Mornin’ all. Off to the gym.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, DEG, Sean, ‘bodru, homey, Stinky, and RoaT!

I’ll be going to the Y after work for another water aerobics session! 😃🏊🏼‍♀️ In the meantime, I’ll probably be writing up the minutes of Tuesday’s quarterly financial meeting, including speculating on the implications of what my boss knew the Fed was going to do re: interest rates. 📈

      • robodruid

        Good Morning GT:
Any perspective how high rates are going to go?

      • Gender Traitor

Well, at that point in the Zoom meeting, which started earlier than I thought, I was trying to scarf down my lunch of Chinese bourbon chicken between bouts of scribbling notes, but I do recall that there’s been some kvetching from certain quarters that the Fed has raised rates too much too quickly, so…maybe they’ll raise ’em a little more in December, then knock off in ’23? Don’t quote me on that – I don’t have my notes nor my boss’s PowerPoint presentation in front of me.

One thing my boss usually presents is a “dot plot” showing where members of the Federal Open Market Committee think rates will be at various points in the future. If I can find that online for this week’s meeting, I’ll post a link.

      • Gender Traitor

This page from the Fed’s site doesn’t have that “dot plot” of committee members’ rate predictions, but it does have lots of tables listing their expectations (as of their September meeting) regarding a bunch of near-term economic stats.

      • Grosspatzer

Are these models as solid as climate models? Because climate models are the gold standard for predictive accuracy, it is known.

      • Gender Traitor

Well, the members of the FOMC may have insufficient renal calculi to toss on the table, thus limiting their ability to prognosticate correctly.

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, U! How are you today?

      • UnCivilServant

        Lousy.

I’m tired, and I left my phone at the office when I left yesterday (I was in such a hurry I forgot to make sure I had everything)

      • Gender Traitor

I’m sorry! 😟 Is it worth going in to fetch it? (This is a WFH day, correct?)

      • UnCivilServant

Today is a remote day, I don’t want to leave to house, but I worry whether my family is trying to reach me.

      • Gender Traitor

Knowing you, you’d worry about that all day. Maybe try to get out either before or after the worst of the morning traffic, grab the phone, then pick yourself up a nice meal on the way back home?

      • UnCivilServant

There is a gap in my calendar just after noon. I was debating heading in then and running away. There should be at most one person in our area, since it’s thursday.

      • Grosspatzer

Sorry. I am so glad I am not going into the office these days.

    • Ownbestenemy

      Morning. Software build install day.

      • robodruid

        Good Luck?

      • Ownbestenemy

        Routine. Should be okay…should

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, OBE! ::salutes:: Good luck, brave soldier!

    • rhywun

following an uproar from Conservative MPs, including former PM Boris Johnson, opposition parties, and the government climate czar

      CoNsEnSuS!

British government is the driving everyone into the poorhouse we do together.

  23. Grosspatzer

    Mornin’, reprobates.

OBE, I hope the new build does the needful. Can’t have demolition derby over Sin City, that would be bad for business.

    • Ownbestenemy

These are easy cause we have two redundant systems running in parallel.

  24. Yusef drives a Kia

    Hey kids, whats shakin’?
It looks like 4X is sending me snow diguised as rain, otherwise another pretty day.
    Lets go driving😎

    • Fourscore

The serious snow comes next week. I have to clean up the bee biz the bear left me. If he/she doesn’t take a seasonal nap I may have to do it again.

Get your *kit in the van, Yusef, a shovel, a tow chain, maybe a little sand (optional). Not for yourself but to help when the other guy/gal has a problem.

      *Makes a note to self

      • Gender Traitor

Do I understand correctly that good old-fashioned kitty litter (not necessarily the “clumping” kind) may work as well as (or better than?) sand for traction purposes? Used to keep a big bag in the back of my old AMC Spirit hatchback – made pretty good ballast, too.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Yessir, I got my towstrap,
        Shovel
Sand, and enough gear to live in Kia for 3 days if needed.

  25. Not Adahn

Among the various bits and bobs handed out at nats, I’ve got a 3.5″ MLok handguard (from Ergo) that I will never use for anything other than a paperweight or potentially a source of scrap aluminum. Anyone want it?

  26. Grosspatzer

Okay, we need a ruling here.

    https://nypost.com/2022/11/02/professional-cornhole-world-rocked-by-baggate-cheating-scandal/

Professional cornhole has been rocked by controversy after the top-ranked team was accused of using illegal bean bags at the 2022 American Cornhole League World Championships in August.

Officials gathered to inspect Richards and Lopez’s bean bags and confirmed that they were, in fact, not regulation size.

“They’re too small,” ESPN’s cornhole color commentator Mark Pryor remarked. “That’s going to create some drama.”

    So, size matters in cornholing.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I have a good friend who quit playing disc golf because he was making too much money playing cornhole

      • robodruid

        How?

      • Grosspatzer

        Twenty bucks a pop?

      • Sean
