GlibCar: Auburn, IN Car Museums – Part Two

by | Dec 27, 2022 | Autos, History, Travel | 115 comments

Part One

Last time we looked at Auburns, Cords, and Duesenbergs. This time, we’ll go through cars at the museum which aren’t Auburns, Cords, and Duesenbergs.

Did you know a lot of cars used to be made in Indiana?
Charles H. Black made this car after driving his neighbor’s Benz. He completed it sometime between 1891 and 1894.
1899 Waverley Stanhope Phaeton. This is the earliest known example of the Indiana Bicycle Company’s electric powered Stanhope Phaeton.
1908 McIntyre Model M.
1909 Zimmerman Model H Runabout.
1909 Mitchell Model K Touring Car
A view of the inside of the 1909 Mitchell
1909 McIntyre Model 251. This is the only known surviving example of this type of light duty vehicle from McIntyre.
1911 Metallurgique. This car was featured in the 1965 movie “The Great Race”.
1911 Izzer Roadster. This was a custom-built car made by the Model Automobile Company in Peru, Indiana.
1919 Locomobile Model 48. The company started by making steam cars, and transitioned to gasoline cars in 1904.
1926 Cunningham Sport Touring
1929 Lincoln Model L Brougham. This car passed through several different hands, but was never driven much. It was donated to the museum in 1972 with only 12,000 miles on it.
1948 Lincoln Continental Coupe. This car marks the end of V-12 production in the United States.
In front is a 1963 Jaguar E-type. The red car in back is a 1951 Jaguar XK120.
1979 Beuhrig Coupe. This is the last car Gordon Beuhrig designed. The plan was to make 50 cars, but only four prototypes were produced. This is the first prototype.

That’s all for this installment. In the next installment, we’ll go next door into the National Auto & Truck Museum.

    Beautiful cars loaded with character.

    • DEG

      Yes they are.

The third part has some more mundane cars. The third part is now in the scheduling queue.

      • Galt1138

        Great series!

Curious what the machine is to the left of the President’s desk from Part One. Is it some type of early dictaphone?

  2. R.J.

The Locomobile is my favorite. I am a big fan of long hood sedans. What a beast!

    • DEG

That is a beauty isn’t it?

I’d really like that Lincoln V-12 though.

      • R.J.

For me, the Cunningham coupe would be next. I do see those Lincolns pop up on Hemmings sometimes.

      • Chafed

        Yes to both.

  3. Tonio

I might be touching myself, perhaps inappropriately.

    • DEG

I thought you were into bears?

      • Tonio

Not exclusively. The long hood, the 8+ cylinder engine, resonates with me…

      • Tonio

And don’t get me started on the tufted leather upholstery, or the Jags with the dual Stromberg carbs.

    • R.J.

      He like big brass cans!

      • R.J.

I like brass cans and I can not lie
        You other brothers can’t deny
That when a car goes by with a big long hood
And round lights in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull up tough
‘Cause you notice that engine bay was stuffed
Deep in the oxblood leather it’s wearing
        I’m hooked and I can’t stop staring…

      • DEG

        Excellent

      • Zwak, who has his own double cross to bear.

        Winning.

  4. Timeloose

    Those Lincoln’s are really impressive.

    • DEG

      Yes, yes they are.

  5. one true athena

Is the little Izzer Roadster actually a one-seater, or does it just look narrow in the pic?

Beautiful cars. The Petersen Museum here only has a few early ones display at any given time so it’s great to see a wider selection.

    • DEG

I didn’t take a picture of the inside of the Izzer. If I remember correctly, it is narrow.

    • The Hyperbole

Probably a trick of perspective, In the picture on the wall behind the car two adults are sitting in it side by side and don’t appear to be right on top of each other.

    • DrOtto

I think it’s right hand drive, which makes it look very narrow in the photo.

  6. Zwak, who has his own double cross to bear.

I am diggin’ that McIntyre. I would love cruising around on that old buck-board.

By the way, in Reno there is an awesome car museum, the National Automobile Museum https://automuseum.org/

And in Tacoma, there is another great one: Lemay-America’s Car Museum https://www.americascarmuseum.org/

    • DEG

      Those museums look cool

    • Gustave Lytton

America’s Automotive Trust and LeMay – America’s Car Museum acknowledge that we are situated on the traditional lands of the Puyallup People. We gratefully honor and respect their stewardship of this land throughout the generations. We recognize that this land acknowledgement is one small step toward true allyship, and we commit to uplifting the voices, experiences, and histories of the Indigenous people of this land.

      🤦‍♂️

      • Zwak, who has his own double cross to bear.

Stupid people, Puyallup is 10 miles away!

  7. Fourscore

Great cars, great music, DEG. I grew up with the Johnny cars, though I never had the money to enjoy the luxury of owning one. Had a ’54 Chevvie 150 a little later, a working man’s car.

    Thanks

    • DEG

      I’m glad you liked it.

  8. MikeS

That 1948 Lincoln Continental Coupe is awesome. Can you imagine trying to park that beast in a parking spot at WalMart?

    • DEG

You’ll be like me: Park far away from anyone else.

    • UnCivilServant

If I owned one, I would not go anywhere near Walmart with it. If I had to go to walmart, I’d find another means of transportation.

No reason to risk the car.

      • MikeS

Of course. I was just thinking how much of a pain it would be to navigate a vehicle like that in modern parking lots.

      • The Hyperbole

I was going to joke that if you owned one you’d just send your servant to Wallmart, but looked on bring a trailer and they are surprisingly reasonably priced, going for 12 to 30 grand.

  9. Sensei

    Thanks DEG.

    Love brass era cars.

    • DEG

      You’re welcome!

  10. Grummun

    Great photos, DEG.

The AACA Museum in Hershey PA has some nice pieces and a lot of Tucker stuff, if that is of interest.

The Lane Motor Museum in Nashville TN has the gimmick that they aim to keep every car in running condition.

    • DEG

      Thanks!

I’ve been to the Lane Motor Museum, it has some good stuff.

  11. DEG

I’m off to bed. I will check tomorrow and respond to comments/questions then.

    • MikeS

Thanks, DEG! What a fun series!

  12. Festus

Ha Ha! Tulsi Gabbard just ended a politician’s career.

      • UnCivilServant

        Whose?
        Whos’?

        Eventually I’ll grammr

      • The Hyperbole

That Santos guy who claimed he was saying he was “Jew-ish” when he claimed he was a Jew, among other lies about his credentials.

      • Galt1138

        “Video removed” Dang!

  13. Not an Economist

OT — In honor of the holidays, proof that there are still good people in the US.

    • Festus

Fuck that shit! Half of the populace are Mega Maga!

    • Chafed

Wow! That is a heartwarming story.

    • Q Continuum

My Grinch heart just grew half a size.

  14. Q Continuum

A wall of text so full of unselfawareness it could sever your connection to reality completely.

    https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/23440579/comedy-wars-greg-gutfeld-jon-stewart-stephen-colbert-liberal-conservative

TL;DR – The Left’s “comedians” all suck and no one watches them anymore. That makes The Cathedral very nervous so here is an impenetrable tome that trots out all the same tired tropes about how the right are stupid and that’s why their comedians are dominating new media (an argument that makes no sense whatsoever, but whatevs).

    • Chafed

Nothing makes me think a comedian is funny more than a dry left wing essay.

    • Brochettaward

On a very basic level, the two sides seem to disagree on the question of what a joke should look like, what it’s okay to joke about, and what is so under threat that to joke about it would be unthinkable.

Younger conservatives these days are far more likely to be the ones telling you that it’s okay to joke about anything and that it isn’t unthinkable to laugh at anything. That transition took place under your Obama when you guys were too busy accusing anyone of mocking the left of being racist. In order to defend one politician with a tiny bit of melanin to the death, the left found it important to completely turn on free speech and humor.

    • Grumbletarian

This year the Atlantic called Gutfeld! “where comedy goes to die,” and found the show’s comedic perspective so bizarre that it could only attribute the show’s ratings to a sense that Trump’s presidency “introduced into the culture a tremendous uncertainty about what was actually funny.”

Gutfeld! has good ratings because conservatives only think it’s funny even though it’s really not.

  15. Festus

Gutfeld tries too hard but he has better guests and talking points. He writes better.

    • Brochettaward

Festus doesn’t realize that his less sophisticated conservative mind is supposed to love Gutfield.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

The slightly desperate trying too hard is part of his schtick which got old for me after he left RedEye. He’s very lucky to have Nick DiPaolo, who is actually funny, helping him with his monologues.

    • Chafed

How long before Ted Lieu tells us you can flip over an island?

      • one true athena

He’s not one of the brightest bulbs, but I think his real problem is he desperately wants to be as famous as Schiff and Swallwell in the local market and thinks if he just progs a little harder, is a little more hateful to the enemy, it’ll be him.

      • one true athena

Also I can’t believe I escaped his district only for them to redraw the lines and put me back into it!

I’ve met him in person and he’s wallpaper paste. He clearly got elected through party shenanigans without gladhanding many people.

      • Chafed

If California keeps depopulating you and I will be in the same district before too long.

      • one true athena

LOL oh god I hope we’re both outta here before then!

      • Galt1138

        Hah!

Not long after my wife retires, we’re leaving.

If you’d asked me in early 1996 when I moved here if I’ll ever leave, I’d have said no. I was a bit naive about CA politics when I got here. After all, they did have a Republican governor (not that I’m Republican – but you get the idea).

      • Chafed

I think you’re right and in the local market he may be right.

  16. hayeksplosives

Thanks for sharing all the great photos, DEG.

This is one post I will be able to share with my husband without him thinking I’m crazy and hanging out with crazy people.

    • Brochettaward

Have you shown him my Firsts?

Be warned – they have been known to turn men gay.

      • hayeksplosives

        Yeah, nah.

    • DEG

      You’re welcome!

This is one post I will be able to share with my husband without him thinking I’m crazy and hanging out with crazy people.

Wait, I write wholesome stuff? I must be doing something wrong.

  17. hayeksplosives

    Well, crap.

I’ve been sick for a few days (started with a sore throat and cough) and thought I was getting better, but Tuesday I started sneezing and have a runny nose. No fever, but I do have muscle aches.

I took one of those at-home Covid tests that I got by US mail, and sure enough, I have the Vid. So much for going back to work on Thursday; looks like I will be working from home.

Fortunately, I have a nebulizer and plenty of solution for it in case my blood oxygen drops too much. Still it’s a pain in the neck. So much for the vaccine, which I was required to get for work. Oddly, the actual Covid is milder than my reaction to the 2nd J&J shot. I imagine I have the mild Omicron strain that is very contagious but generally not serious.

    • Sean

      Feel better.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

You’re supposed to say how much worse it’d be without the vax.

    • Grosspatzer

Sounds like what I had a few weeks ago. Cleared up in about a week, hope you feel better soon.

    • DEG

      Get well soon!

  18. Sean

    Good morning Glibs. 😉

    Great looking cars.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, Stinky, Hype, and hayek (if you’re still awake – Hope you feel better ASAP!)

It’s already a tropical 26 degrees here in SW OH! Maybe my office won’t feel like a meat locker today! 😃

    • rhywun

The only thing that is going to fix it is to turn off the free prizes and I don’t see that ever happening.

    • Grosspatzer

I was gonna post some snarky comment about Asian drivers, but that would be lacist and totally inappropriate for this site.

  19. Hyperion

    Don’t none y’all job jebz?

    • rhywun

I’m back to work today after a week off.

      • Hyperion

I’m sorry, that is terrible. I’m off until they 3rd of Jan.

    • Grosspatzer

Haven’t you heard? The furrriners took all our jerbz.

      • Hyperion

Old news, now it’s the bots.

    • DEG

I start a new one in January.

  20. Grosspatzer

    Mornin’, reprobates!

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, ‘patzie (and rhy!) How are you and yours?

      • Grosspatzer

Mornin’, GT. All quiet in Casa Patzer, #1 son goes to doc today, should be cleared to return to work unless some furriner took his jerb while he was out. I woke up at 5AM with a solution to a performance issue in our pipeline. Sleep is magical.

      • juris imprudent

I woke up at 5AM with a solution to a performance issue in our pipeline.

Little early for euphemisms isn’t it?

      • Sean

It’s never too early to slap some around.

      • Grosspatzer

        This guy gets it.

  21. Not Adahn

    Morning,

Yesterday was the most fascinating software install I’ve ever seen, since it took two diffrent people with programmer’s consoles open working on it for more than two hours.

Today is going to potentially be teeth-gnashingly frustrating, as I received a package from Thermofisher (who’s billing department is quite aggressive) with a packing slip that does not match the (substantially less-expensive) contents.

    • Grosspatzer

Yesterday was the most fascinating software install I’ve ever seen, since it took two diffrent people with programmer’s consoles open working on it for more than two hours.

That sounds like fun. I take it all went well.

  22. Hyperion

That map is disturbing, because I have bee to all of those places, multiple times.

    • DEG

Unfortunately, because of the way the area with that map was laid out, and my camera, that was the best picture I could get of the map.
