PART I
SPEAKING IN TONGUES
27
โWELL?โ GIO ASKED as soon as Trey walked into the bathroom that evening.
โThat was a whole helluva lot betterโn I expected,โ he crowed as he bent to run a bath. โEasier, too. You saw?โ
โA second, out of the corner of my eye,โ he muttered as he pulled at his neck and carefully scraped the blade down it. โJust in time, before Dot saw. Howโd you get her to do it?โ
โI dunno, man.โ Trey dodged out of Aliceโs way. She plopped down on the toilet with a relieved sigh. โJust one big happy family, ainโt we?โ he said dryly.
โYou fuck her?โ Alice asked with anticipation.
โSure did,โ Trey said proudly. โGirlโs a natural.โ
โYou canโt get it up for a nice girl. What happened?โ
โNot sure, but itโs been a while, so maybeย โฆย โ He shrugged helplessly.
Alice and Gio exchanged knowing looks. โHeโs in luuuuuuv,โ Alice drawled.
โNeh,โ Trey said as he shucked the last of his clothes and climbed into the hot water with a hiss and a sigh. He lay back and closed his eyes, thinking about how perfect Marina had been, there in the grass under a tree, in a cemetery, in broad daylight. He couldnโt have planned it better if heโd tried. โI donโt believe in all that love business. Thereโs girls you fuck and girls who make your life easier for whatโs left of it.โ
โExcept sheโs not either one,โ Gio pointed out.
Treyโs lip curled. โDonโt remind me.โ
โNo, spill it. Whatโd you do to get under her skirt?โ
โI told you. I donโt know. She was breezy all day long. You saw her. Like she was at the concert, practically walking on air.โ
โDot was getting worried.โ
โAbout what? Me?โ
โFor once, no. She was happy Marina was so light, but then she said something wasnโt right with her. Not like at the concert; this was different. She wanted to go home and we were looking for you when I saw you two going to town.โ
โDotโs jealous, is what.โ
โFuck you. She is not.โ
โYour little Mormon jane?โ Alice asked.
โYeah,โ Gio said, now working on the other side of his throat.
โWay you two talk about her, Iโd say sheโs more like a mama bear.โ
โYeh,โ Gio returned.
โAlice get off the pot!โ Ethel yelled from somewhere down the hallway.
โGo upstairs!โ Alice yelled back.
โSomebodyโs using it!โ
โWell, three people are using this one,โ Trey called, seeing only the humor in it because he was basking in the afterglow of good sex with a woman he really really liked and it hadnโt been as much of a chore as heโd thought it would be.
โTrey!โ Ethel whined.
โDaddy,โ Gio mocked.
โMm hmm,โ Trey hummed, settling deeper into the water. โChildren, behave.โ
โOur luck, first time wonโt be the charm,โ Alice said as she finished her business and vacated the throne for Ethel, who gasped. โYou did it?โ
โI did. Gio, you think maybe Dot likes girls? And sheโs got a crush on Marina?โ
โThat is not who sheโs got a crush on,โ Alice said, then warbled at Gio, โโSweetie pieย โฆย โโ
Gio grinned while he whirled his soap brush in his soap cup and applied more to his face. โSheโs irked because Marinaโs folks wonโt let her go to her church activities, not even counting Sunday services. Sheโs starting to take it out on Marina. And now you. Sheโs still suspicious of you, but she thought if you could persuade Scarritt to let you walk out alone, you should be able to get her to at least one of their vaudeville nights, not even dancing. The fact that she got to go to a jazz concert but not to one of Dotโs things really has her back up.โ
โShe tell you that?โ
โNot in so many words.โ
โReel her back.โ
โThat will be a lot harder after you two disappeared for forty-five minutes. She was furious.โ
โI was looking for Marina and she hid well,โ Trey said testily.
โThatโs convincing,โ Alice drawled.
โYeah, she didnโt buy it.โ
Oh. โHow come she ainโt made you yet?โ Trey demanded.
โIโm not a boy,โ Gio said simply. โIโm not constantly telling her how pretty she is and treating her like a trophy. I listen to her. I also donโt make fun of her church. I tell her Catholicism has its own nutty ideas.โ
โThat is true.โ
โAnd her father doesnโt intimidate me.โ
โWhatโs he like?โ
โNot a preacher. Heโs one of us.โ
โI got that impression, Boss Tom tellinโ me not to piss him off. How come he ainโt made you?โ
โHe doesnโt expect a Mafioso with an English name to show up on his doorstepโโ
โYou still got an accent.โ
โโand heโs distracted. He works like a dog, between his vet practice and his congregation.โ
โHer mama?โ
โJust had a baby, sixth one. And sheโs busy doing what every preacherโs wife does around her congregation. Nobody brings her any supper or helps clean her house when she has a baby.โ Gio sounded offended on Dotโs motherโs behalf. โYou know what they call her? Sister Bishop.โ Trey laughed and Gio shot him a glare.
โLike they donโt even know her name,โ Sally harrumphed. โMy mother was just โReverend Missus.โโ
โThen whyโs Dot out playinโ around not helpinโ?โ Trey asked.
โShe stays up with the babies and cleans the house after everyoneโs gone to bed. Or she goes out on night calls with Albright. The girl works as hard as her parents do.โ
โAnd plays that hard?โ Brody asked. โSheโs taking something.โ
โNope. Her mother told me she was born chattering and bouncing around at all hours and never stopped, so instead of making her stay in bed at night, she put her to work just to try to wear her out.โ
โNow Iโm jealous,โ Trey muttered, suddenly feeling his fatigue. โWhyโs she so dead-set on Marina cominโ to her church?โ
โShe has no friends at church. The other girls shun her.โ
โMmm, like Marina at hers, only she donโt notice.โ
โNobody wants to run with preachersโ girls who arenโt mean or up to no good,โ Sally muttered bitterly.
โThatโs what Dot said.โ
โLord, you should have seen how delighted my daddyโs congregation was when I started showing.โ
Gio nodded. โNot just that, but sheโs a looker and smart. Everything she does to earn their approval just pushes them away because sheโs so much better at it than they are. Dumb blonde is one thing. Smart bug-eyed Betty is also jake. Air-tight and smartย โฆย I finally suggested maybe she should save her theatrics for the stage and dance floor, but thatโs just part of the same problem. She thought my being her beau would get the wrinkles out, but itโs even worse now. Catty little bitches. At school, too.โ
โGod, I hate female politics,โ Trey muttered.
โWe know,โ Ethel drawled.
Indeed, he didnโt tolerate it. Heโd fired more than a few who couldnโt play nice, and he went out of his way to hire people who could get along. He had developed a sixth sense about it, but that was from necessity. He wasnโt about to referee female politics, and silent wars were more damaging than loud and violent ones. His employees didnโt have to be friends, but they did need to keep their claws sheathed.
โSo now you have to do it until youโve got Junior all sewn up in there, the locks on the front doors changed, and the keys in your hand.โ
Trey grunted. That was the trick, wasnโt it? โHow did getting Junior in suddenly get harder than getting him out?โ
โYou tell us,โ Ethel said. โYouโre the only one here whoโs pulled Junior out.โ
Trey held up two fingers.
โYou should go to medical school. Youโre smarter than my daddy and he is a doctor.โ
โThat is a correct read on the situation,โ Trey drawled. โSomebody get me a cigar and a glass.โ
Ethel, leaning against the bathroom doorjamb, yelled at one of the boys. โAll right, daddy-o, now spill it.โ
โAinโt nothinโ to spill,โ Trey objected good-naturedly. โShe was havinโ fun, let me kiss her, and it was Easy Street from there. Not lookinโ a gift horse in the mouth, โspecially after she damn near tore her hand off gettinโ it outta mine last night.โ
โWell, that doesnโt sound right,โ Sally mused. โShe acted like you bit her last night, but half a day later sheโs spreading her legs?โ
Treyโs whisky and cigar came, so now he was thoroughly relaxed, soaking in a tub of hot water with cigar and whisky, making plans with people who were allied behind him, which he had never had. He liked it, the feeling that they were all united in a goal. He couldnโt allow himself to get used to it because they werenโt friends. They werenโt even yes-men. They and Treyโs grandparents had their own reasons for wanting Trey to win the speak and would help him as much as possible, even though it was barely more than moral support. After that, Trey would be on his own again.
โWell, she didnโt grow a twin,โ Trey said around his cigar. โNow, you watch. Tomorrow sheโll be all flustered, not wanna talk about it, make me wait a few days. Gio, you gotta keep Dot away from me and Marina.โ
โLook, Dunham. You have Friday and Saturday nights alone now. Iโm not going to spend my time with Dot trying to keep her from seeing you get under Marinaโs skirt. Do it on your own time.โ
โHrmph.โ
The chatter went on around him while Trey soaked, sipping his good whisky and smoking his fine cigar, his head back, eyes closed. One by one, three more of his girls and two of his gigs crowded into the bathroom discussing the bet, Treyโs chances of getting Marina pregnant now that heโd gotten access, and what would happen to Trey and the rest of them if he lostโor won.
All he could think about was how perfectly heโd been able to seduce Marina. It had been so easy. Shockingly so, especially since he hadnโt been trying; he was still in first gear, taking her to picnics and ballgames, miniature golf and croquet, almost always with Dot and Gio, and starting to panic as his deadline closed in. Hide-and-go-seek for a whole fucking afternoon, for Godโs sake. He hadnโt seen it coming. Heโd found her, kissed her, things progressed as they usually did. The skirt went up, the loose drawers came off, as did her blouse and the little slip that covered her torso. All Trey had to do was open his fly and make sure his body hid hers from any olโ passerby.
Her breasts were damn near perfect and her belly was soft. He drove himself crazy sucking on her nipples, making her writhe and whine for something she didnโt have words for. He had kissed her when he entered her, not knowing what resistance heโd find. She was wet but tight, and heโd hurt her. Sheโd tensed and whimpered when he entered her, slowly, carefully. Sheโd made him stop for a few seconds until she relaxed again with a sigh and an arch of her back.
She came. He came. She was still tense. Heโd used his hand while teasing her nipples until she came a second time. She couldโve gone for number three, but he couldnโt.
Then sheโd dozed for about twenty minutes, half on top of him, still in her skirt although heโd pulled it down and draped her blouse over her naked torso. Trey was fully clothed. Her breathing was shallow and even, though he felt her sighs against his shoulder while he stroked her hair. Heโd kissed her to consciousness and sheโd smiled against his mouth. I love kissing you, Treyย โฆ
Mmm hm. I love kissing you, too, Sugar.
I feel all tingly in my between.
In your between?
Yes, between my legs. My between.
Oh, that. Yes, your between. How about you let me take care of those tingles in your between?
Yes, thank you.
Perfect. So perfectly wet. Soft pants of yes yes yes, her whimpers of Trey, more, and her deep growls at climax number three. After that, heโd put her back together, smoothed her dark hair and picked the grass out of it, and made sure that no one would suspect anything was different about her. He had her home by six, a respectable hour by any standard. Sheโd given him a soft smile that went all the way to her brown eyes and said, โSee you tomorrow at church?โ as if nothing had happened.
Now, lying in the tub listening to the chatter of his makeshift family, smoking a good cigar, and sipping his fine whisky, he had a chance to think.
Marinaโs mother wanted her to stay and take care of her until she died. Her father wanted her out. That could be the only explanation for a man allowingโencouraging, evenโhis sixteen-year-old daughter to walk out with a twenty-four-year-old man.
Trey would have questioned her sudden change of behavior if he hadnโt noticed how happy she was with the Gershwin and then how grateful sheโd been for her fatherโs approval. The only explanation Trey could come up with was that sheโd taken his approval for permission to be less proper. Or else Marina was as driven by her libido as her father was and had only needed the right man to push the right buttons.
Trey scowled a little.
It didnโt sit well, the idea Marina might be driven by her libido. Trey wasnโt, and he wasnโt an innocent virgin. As he went over the afternoonโs romp, he got more and more unsettled.
โWhatโs wrong now?โ Ethel asked impatiently.
โI dunno,โ he muttered. โSheย โฆย โ
They waited.
He shrugged helplessly. โShe wasnโt what I imagined,โ he finally said.
โYou said she was good.โ
โYeah, she was,โ he agreed fervently. โJustย โฆย notย โฆย I donโt know.โ
โTake it and be grateful,โ Alice snapped. โWeโre depending on you.โ

PART I
SPEAKING IN TONGUES
I got some catchin’ up to do.
Finished the previous part:
โA CEMETERY?โ MARINA gasped as Trey turned into a driveway just off Fifteenth Street.
An ex-girlfriend of mine and I used to go for walks in Mount Auburn Cemetary. Those were nice walks, though we didn’t enjoy them quite as much as Trey and Marina.
I was going to add pix of the cemetery and the chapel on the property that Marina melted over, but remembered that was LAST week, and THIS week, he’s just taking a bath with his employees doing their business around him. I will post more pictures with the chapters as appropriate.
Excellent.
Thanks Mojeaux! I like this story.
I’ll settle for a picture of that.
I’m a tidge removed from that because I know that he is my hub-characters’ grandfather, so, kinda ew.
Close enough for government work
Oh lord.
Lol
Heh.
Alice and Gio exchanged knowing looks. โHeโs in luuuuuuv,โ Alice drawled.
I do believe they’re right.
โWell, three people are using this one,โ
Nothing wrong with a threesome.
Err… foursome
Indeed, he didnโt tolerate it. Heโd fired more than a few who couldnโt play nice, and he went out of his way to hire people who could get along. He had developed a sixth sense about it, but that was from necessity. He wasnโt about to referee female politics, and silent wars were more damaging than loud and violent ones. Smart.
he only explanation Trey could come up with was that sheโd taken his approval for permission to be less proper. Or else Marina was as driven by her libido as her father was and had only needed the right man to push the right buttons.
A little of column A, a little of column B…

That’s really horrible, the Masters being rained out.
Three trees went down.
So did a Woods.
I am really liking this story.
Thanks! ๐
Yep, this is a very enjoyable weekly read.
Just knocked off Rousseau’s First Discourse. Amazing (or perhaps not) that it was a prize winner. It’s 18th century post-modernist claptrap. I’m a bit disappointed, as it seems wildly over-valued as shocking and revolutionary.
At the time, it was. Now, old hat. But it does form one of the cornerstones of leftist thought, along with Malthus and Marx.
I just discovered Pluto has Voyager.
Tonight’s hairstyle is: Bun of Steel.
Holding the probe hostage until we recognize its planet status again?
I’d acquit.
I need a haircut. I just looked at myself in the mirror. I look have the forehead curl like Squiggie from Luverne and Shirley
hello!
The three PlutoTV channels to set as favorites are Baywatch, Star Trek, and More Star Trek. Despite the names, I have seen the first four series on the Trek channels.
It’s crazy some of the channels they have. The Degrassi Channel?!
I always look forward to Friday, for my Mojeaux fix. Great installment.
Thanks, Moj. Now I’m worried about Gio. Gotta wait another week but at least Trey done dunnit.
Mojeaux,
Sorry to go OT, but it’s a good thing “your guy” is paid to catch and not to throw.
Travis Kelce is a walking, talking, breathing, neverending meme.
<3 that guy.
BTW, he was a quarterback in high school.
Juuuuust a bit inside.
Indiana Jones 5 trailer makes a rather inane stab at capitalism…via no one’s favorite actress/comedian Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Villain says I stole it then Jones says he stole it then Bridge says she stole it…it’s capitalism.
So edgy. Much brave.
This movie needs to make $1 billion to break even because Disney can’t make a movie without having to resort to massive reshoots after the fact. And the movies still suck badly and most of them are a complete mess.
The Critical Drinker has had some thoughts based what little has been available. He is going to have a field day when it is released.
Every Indiana Jones movie sucks from the first to the last. Spielberg is terrible.
Hot takes like this are beneath you as a Firster, Festus. You owe 50 Firsts to The Great Firster for this one.
AND they announced another movie with Rey Palpawalker. Barf. Is literally anyone clamoring for more of that awful character and her one expression? Disney/LF/Kennedy must still – somehow – believe the saga can continue with this cuckoo who stole someone else’s life.
I’m so tempted to write something about this, but I know you guys all watched the hate vids already, so there’s no point. But it’s just so aggravating to see LF learned nothing from the debacle.
Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it! Write it!
Really? YET ANOTHER STAR WARS RANT?
well, I guess we are hard up for content
Yow! Poor Marina! I hope she gets ghonorhea.
Wait, what?
I really loathe this Tres fellow…
He’s not the hero of this tale, thus far.
Another relevant movie clip
Finally home. Trying monkey shoulder. It’s a bit sweeter than I’m used to.
I’m hoping monkey shoulder is liquor.
Don’t get me wrong, sweet mojo! I’m enjoying the tale well enough but hoping that Gio puts a bullet behind Tres’ ear before all and sundry.
Morning Glibs.
Good morning, Sean! How are you today?
I’m in a great mood. ๐
How bout you?
Excellent, thanks! ::raises mug of you-know-what::
