Crazy

When I was 13 years old I was a big Seal fan.  I was introduced to the musician from a source you may know has a certain power over me, Comic Book movies.  Seal was featured on the Batman Forever soundtrack with the hit song Kiss From a Rose.

I became semi-obsessed with Seal.  For my 13th birthday I got my first CD player, and the very first album I picked out was Seal’s self titled album. I had asthma and was a fat kid, but very energetic.  So instead of participating in sports I walked.  With my rad jean jacket and my 3rd party Walkman clone. I walked fucking everywhere, rocking fucking Seal! I was a badass in my own mind. Then I learned that this was not Seal’s first album. He had an earlier one with a song called Crazy as the single.

I heard it, thought it was ‘bitchin’ and moved along to other things.  Hootie and The Blowfish was now the cool new thing, no time for Seal, Blues Traveler has a new song!  So years went by and I morphed from a fat 13 year old obsessed with Seal to fat 19 year old who listened to metal music. Then something hit me.  A ‘new’ band I had ‘found’ when I went to Ozzfest.  Mushroomhead wore masks like Slipknot, but their music seemed to have more art and substance behind it.  Then I got the album, and there was one cover song on it that blew my mind.

It’s all connected! It’s all a simulation! Jean jackets protect you!

I was once asked how I learned to control my Firsts. How do I stop the First from spontaneously gushing from my being? It took me much of my life to find an answer, to solve the side-effects of Firsting. I had such raw Firsting essence that this was greater for me than any other in human history. But the answer was so simple, so eloquent. I would always be Firsting.

    • Brochettaward

Also, I like how I bring up Steven Crowder, and I’m met with almost open hostility. Who cares about THAT guy who simply draws millions of views from his 6 million follower base everyday. But Tucker Carlson comes up because he’s going to be posting videos on Twitter, and the boomers of Glibs ejaculate all over themselves. Carlson was on Fox News and was drawing a comparable audience to Crowder everyday on Rumble.

      • Pat

I can think of two reasons for the discrepancy. A) Old-media stars suck up more headline space on account of fragmentation in new media. Same reason you hear more about D-list actors in the gossip rags than YouTube stars who make more 10x money and have a 10x larger audience. B) From my very limited knowledge, derived nearly entirely from headlines you’ve posted here at glibs, it seems that Crowder’s personal life is getting dragged through the mud, whereas the Tucker Carlson story is more of a TMITE thing.

      • Brochettaward

Even when it was about Crowder vs conservative media, ala his contract dispute with the Daily Wire, there were a lot of people asking why they should care. I get what you’re saying. I’m not saying anyone should necessarily care about Carlson or Crowder, but you are talking about two guys with comparable followings (you could honestly argue Crowder’s is larger or at least more impressive by a lot – he built that show from the ground up with no real support from anyone).

I think there is a real age gap at play here and there’s still a mindset that old or traditional media matters more even when you are talking about two guys who mostly talk into an echo chamber with the same size of audience. Crowder, to me, is worth more money than Carlson as he’s proven his audience will follow him off platform. Is the Fox audience going to sign up to Twitter to listen to Carlson? We’ll see. I don’t have a twitter. I did sign up to Rumble when Crowder started pushing it (I don’t even watch his show more than few times a month).

And while it’s his family stuff being put out for people to see, it really wouldn’t surprise me if there was coordination behind the scenes to fuck with him. He pissed off the Daily Wire and already had a shit ton of enemies in old and new media on the left.

Crowder was the key player in the Youtube Adpocalypse. He was the impetuous for Youtube changing how they monetize content. But some people act like he’s some nobody. I could talk about Michael Malice and his 100k subscribers and get more of a reaction around here.

      • Pat

I think there is a real age gap at play here and there’s still a mindset that old or traditional media matters more even when you are talking about two guys who mostly talk into an echo chamber with the same size of audience.

That’s probably fair, and also plays into what I was saying about how old media figures tend to draw more headlines. It’s not because they’re more famous or more newsworthy, but they’re the focus of more old media, and a dead tree publication still carries with it some form of vestigial prestige even among consumers (and purveyors) of alternative/new media. A lot of conservative commentary, for instance, is just “DUDE THE NEW YORK TIMES LMAO.” Is there any special reason why the NYT should still be treated as if it had a shred of credibility, let alone as if it were still America’s Paper of Record, among people who know better and don’t even read it? Of course not.

      • slumbrew

For the record, as someone who definitely asked “why should I care about this guy?’ when you were talking about Crowder – I don’t about Tucker either. Nor any other talking head.

That throat-clearing aside, Pat’s got it:

it seems that Crowder’s personal life is getting dragged through the mud, whereas the Tucker Carlson story is more of a TMITE thing.

They’re different situations. Crowder’s contract-dispute-turned-ugly-personal-life isn’t the same thing at all. If the Tucker thing turns out he just was waving his dick around the office, it’ll be a nothing-burger there too.

(also, ‘boomer’? Not that many commentators are boomers)

      • slumbrew

        I should add:

I wasn’t being hostile when I asked “why should I care about this guy?”. (well, not _that_ hostile).

It just seems like some conservative-world gossip.

      • Pat

(also, ‘boomer’? Not that many commentators are boomers)

“Boomer” is just generic for “you’re old” in modern parlance. You’re either a boomer (old) or a zoomer (kid), there is no in between.

      • slumbrew

        *laughs in Gen-X*

      • rhywun

        Gen what now?

      • slumbrew

Interestingly (or not), Coupland’s point was that ‘Generation X’ wasn’t really a thing – there was no through-line for this cohort of post Boomer kids, no shared experience that bound them together in the way the Baby Boom and Greatest Generation (allegedly) were.

Pop-culture aside, I’m not sure he was wrong.

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

        Is that like Latin-X?

        (born in ’71)

      • slumbrew

One damn hyphen and I’m suddenly worse than Nikki

      • Not Adahn

Mebbe take your collectivizing and shove it up your barren first-womb?

  2. Brochettaward

Being a Seal fan may be the most embarrassing thing anyone has ever revealed about themselves on this site. Maybe that I’ve ever seen.

    • Animal

      Oh, the irony.

      • Chafed

        Lol

    • creech

It wasn’t the Glib who picked the Beach Boys?

  3. Tundra

…and my 3rd party Walkman clone.

My Christmas present in 9th grade! I didn’t care.

    Jean jackets protect you!

Probably time to pick up another one.

    Thanks, CPRM! Fun article.

    • Pat

My Aiwa portable CD player cost 1/3 as much as Sony’s, played the same CDs, AND had bass boost and 40 second anti-skip protection. I had it from ~age 10 until ~age 15 when I got my Dell HDD-based portable media player. Which cost 1/3 as much as the iPod, had better battery life, and a 20 GB hard drive that you could also use as portable storage. Pat has always been a specs junkie and not much of a conspicuous consumer.

      • Tundra

Pat wasn’t buying electronics in 1982.

      • Pat

Fair cop, but there’s a perfectly logical explanation for that: I wasn’t born yet.

      • Ted S.

        Get off my lawn.

      • Tundra

        Lol

      • rhywun

        Good lord.

      • Sensei

Aiwa was Sony’s low end brand.

I had one of their receivers in high school.

      • Pat

Huh, never realized that until now. I had an Aiwa AM/FM/Cassette/3 CD changer stereo system *with surround sound* in that era as well. It’s no wonder I couldn’t keep the girls off of me…

      • Certified Public Asshat

I bought a Zune instead of an ipod. I did not enjoy my decision.

      • Pat

With Rockbox installed the Zune was pretty decent. Off the shelf it was pretty trash.

      • Gustave Lytton

I had an Aiwa cassette Walkman knockoff.

    • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Yeah, I rock the jean jacket in junior high, hated it when it disappeared on me. Then leather motorcycle jackets, now Dickies jackets.

Maybe time to go back to the base.

    • Not Adahn

At work I saw a jean jacket with a band T-shirt cut and tacked on the back.

I can only assume it’s a modern repro.

      • UnCivilServant

Was the giveaway the fact that the T-shirt was for Mozart Live?

  4. rhywun

    Kiss From a Rose

Didn’t know that was Seal, TBH. I have never followed him but I do think Crazy is excellent.

You just like gazing at his torso, right?

    • Brochettaward

Rhywun can imply things about Seal fans that I can’t without being called a homophobe.

      • MikeS

        Gay!

  5. DEG

Then I got the album, and there was one cover song on it that blew my mind.

    That’s not a bad cover.

  6. DrOtto

I had a Mura Hi Stepper. Then got into an Aiwa AM/FM/cassette fake-ass walkman. Never played much Seal on it though. Was big into Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax and the like. Then came rap. I tried my damndest not to like the Beastie Boys, but they were too infectious not to like. That opened the door to Kool Moe D, Fat Boys, Ice T and the such.

    • rhywun

I had a rich-kid friend who had the slickest portable cassette player I ever saw, barely larger than the cassette itself. He was a Rush nerd but more importantly, he got me into Tangerine Dream. I would listen to the copies on some anonymous mini-boom box handed down from my mom.

      • Sean

I’ve still got a box of cassettes some where in the garage.

      • rhywun

I threw all mine out a couple moves ago. Man, what a shitty format.

      • Mojeaux

I threw out my Walkman and all my cassettes after I was finally able to locate mp3s. I kept the soundtrack for Out of Africa for much longer than I should have because the CD didn’t have the end credits song and it took years to get it in mp3. I can only surmise some sort of legal entanglement. It was the last cassette I had.

      • Fourscore

I do too, mine are all in Vietnamese. My counterpart in VN recorded them for me, circa 1970.

While CPRM and others were the cool kids with portable cassette players and jean jackets I still had a reel-to-reel playing in my office, while I was wearing my double knits. Can’t remember the brand but top of the line player.

Wish I could come to your party, CPRM, I’ll be there in spirit, designated slow driver.

      • R C Dean

And, yeah, I listened to TD on it.

      • rhywun

        👍

      • rhywun

Maybe. I don’t remember the brand but it was all silver and maybe some black trim or buttons, and there was no bulky band wrapping around it. And it was thinner. This was circa 1986 I think.

      • R C Dean

The band is the belt holster. When they first came out, they were only one like it. By 1986, I’m sure there were lots of others. I don’t think you could make a thinner cassette player – it was hardly bigger than the cassette itself.

      • rhywun

I think ’84 is more likely, now that I think about it.

I lived in Germany during ’85-’86 and I don’t remember ever seeing that kid again after I got back.

      • Sensei

I had that Walkman. It was the size of a cassette case.

Came with two tiny nicads that were specially sized and pancake thin that clipped on the bottom. Also came with AA adapter that lasted much longer but was way less cool.

        https://walkmancentral.com/products/wm-10

      • rhywun

        That might be it.

      • rhywun

Heh that is a memorable scene.

I bought my first cassette Walkman-knockoff in Berlin in 1985.

    • Timeloose

I started with LP’s 45’s and 8 tracks in the 70’s. My player was a hand me down Soundesign steroid AM/FM receiver, turntable, and 8track player from my godfather. One year in the 80’s I got a am/FM boom box with tape deck. It had a built in rechargeable battery that I imagine was NiCd. It was tapes from then on.

I was some kind of cheapskate version of a hipster in the 80’s and 90’s. I refused to rebuy a new medium for all of my music, so it was cassettes until I could no longer find new music I wanted.

The CD world began for me in 1998. It also helped that most of my collection of tapes met their Curie limit in the Texas sun.

  7. Mojeaux

    I like Seal.

    • Chafed

I like his ex-wife. I can see why CPRM listened to his music.

  8. kinnath

45’s to start with, then LPs.

Moved up to cassettes for portability.

Then on to CD for quality.

    I have them all still.

I have about half of the CD’s ripped to my hard drive.

    • Timeloose

It took a wife being out of work for a summer to burn both of our CD collections to MP3s. It’s great now. Only problem I have is manually transferring new stuff to the HD. I’m not a fan of cloud storage.

      • kinnath

I always ripped the songs without compression. MP3s sucked.

      • Pat

FLAC for archiving, Vorbis/Opus/320 MP3 for mobile.

      • Rat on a train

        I use bin/toc for archiving.

      • Sensei

I did it twice… sigh. Once with MP3 with relatively high compression when storage cost was dear and once again with FLAC.

      • kinnath

No need to compress when terabyte drives are cheap.

      • kinnath

I never got in to mobile devices really.

I’d rip CDs to my hard drive and build custom playlists or burn custom compilations to CDR for the car.

  9. The Other Kevin

I also like Seal. Crazy was my favorite song for a time. But I didn’t walk, I listened to it while I drove my 88 Firebird with the converter that connected my CD Walkman to the cars tape deck. I miss those days.

  10. Gustave Lytton

It was 50/50 that CPRM became a U2 fan instead of Seal.

    I like Crazy.

    • rhywun

I went in the U2 direction.

      • slumbrew

I’m not a big U2 fan, but that song kicks ass.

      • slumbrew

Huh. Watching the video I realize I never actually saw the movie. Assuming those aren’t outakes, that movie looks like dogshit.

      • MikeS

        Much like the soundtrack

      • MikeS

        😁

      • slumbrew

Given my aforementioned Massive Attack / Tracey Thorn love, I’ll give it a pass.

      • one true athena

I forgot all about that song! and oh, watching that video, gives me a bit of a twinge at seeing Val Kilmer after seeing Maverick. Poor guy.

Regarding Kiss From a Rose, I remember some debates. We all knew in HS that the song wasn’t written for Batman, so it had nothing to do with the movie, which then left the question about what the heck it was actually about.

  11. Brochettaward

I am here tonight to challenge MikeS to the most devasting and true test of a man’s value there is. Your testicular fortitude will be pushed to the breaking point. I challenge you to a First In The Cell First Off. You name the time, you name the place, jabroni.

    • Brochettaward

Tables, ladders, chairs, and one giant steel cage between you and anyone who can save you!

    • MikeS

I mean, sure…I could beat your ass in the dog kennel you set up in your mom’s basement. But that would be beneath me. Just like your mom was last night.

      • PudPaisley

Not sure if it’s your thing, but Gov’t Mule is playing in Fargo at a brewery on June 24th. I scored some 2nd row tickets in Makato for the night before.

Even if not a fan of the band, worth seeing live. The musicianship is stellar.

My buddy Gregg “Cheech” Hall was in Fargo a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I was never on here when you were around, and vice versa.

      • MikeS

Dang! I haven’t been around much, so easy to miss me. I would have liked to have seen him.

I need to look into Gov’t Mule more. I think maybe I’ve heard a song or two.

      • PudPaisley

The lead singer / guitarist Warren Haynes is my favorite musician ever. I’ve seen him close to 100 times with the Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, solo stuff and he still amazes me every time. Before the Allman Bros. he was David Allen Coe’s lead guitarist for about 5 years.

It never gets old because every night is a different setlist. I’ve seen them 4 nights in a row before (about 10-12 hrs music) and they never played the same song twice. They’ve been recording and selling every live show for over 20 years, so they bring it every night. They’ve also done close to 1,000 covers of damn near every kind of music, but they are at the core a blues based jam band.

Here’s a live show of mostly originals if interested in checking them out. Not everybody’s cup of tea.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqWOauHIh1k&t=4238s

      • Brochettaward

We’ll see how tough you are when it’s just you and me inside a two ton steel cage. I know that not even cold hard steel can withstand the power of my Firsts. I will bloody your nose, blacken your eyes, put you through a table, drop you from up 20 ft high and penetrate every orifice before I’m done. You will never be able to move again without feeling the pain I will inflict upon you.

      • MikeS

        You better pack a lunch.

      • pistoffnick

Bro, I’m backing MikeS. Those Nodak bois are tuff! His brother, NoDakMatt, is his backup.

/have you seen Norf Dakoda? If you can survive THAT, you can survive anything,

      • Brochettaward

Tall tales about abominable snowmen and dire wolves do not concern me. I have done battle with a Firstucapbra. I waged a twenty day war with a seconding version of myself. I am indestructible.

Listening to ‘Crazy’ for the first time in a long, long time and I think, “man, that sounds like a Trevor Horn production”, which it was, of course. TIL that Horn was in The Buggles before forming The Art Of Noise.

    The man was maximum 80’s.

    • rhywun

      a Trevor Horn production

      I did not know that.

I remember him being behind the Yes comeback, too.

      • slumbrew

Looks like he was (briefly) the lead singer.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevor_Horn

“the man who invented the eighties”

Between The Buggles, ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Art Of Noise, that’s not a crazy description of him.

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Yeah, I “saw” them play the lunch crowd at a Borders bookstore I was moonlighting at.

        Not sad at all.

  14. slumbrew

If we’re talking the Batman Forever soundtrack, I have to go with my Massive Attack / Tracey Thorn obsession.

        Nitter

(although it says “tweet unavailable” now)

      • rhywun

I don’t know what that is but I get a box that says “Enter username”.

        Um, OK.

      • Pat

Twitter without Twitter (or JS, if you so desire). The default page just gives you a box to search for tweets by username, but you can swap in the URL of any nitter instance for the “twitter.com” part of a link to a tweet and see the tweet without logging in or having any of your personal information touch a Twitter server. It used to show age-restricted tweets, but that one’s not displaying, so Twitter may have tweaked their API or something.

    • Lackadaisical

I gather she fell, honestly looked like she was going to fall in the first clip too, size and outfit aside, wtf was that?

    • R.J.

Maybe their car shouldn’t have gone out dressed like That.

      • slumbrew

That sort of reminds me of this crazy person Adam Carolla was yelling about:

        https://news.yahoo.com/l-councilwoman-blames-toyota-catalytic-133800854.html

“In this case, I think one of the things that infuriates me, is that we have a company — whatever, Toyota — who makes the Prius, that essentially has a device on their cars which is super easy to remove. It’s basically the value of a MacBook, right?” the Democratic lawmaker said.

“That is put in a place that is incredibly easy to access in your car and the thefts related to this issue have essentially — all of the costs of that — are given to us to bear instead of them [Toyota] having to manufacture a car that actually is not so easy to be stolen,” the Harvard-educated Raman added.

i.e., Those sluts going out in those short skirts only have themselves to blame when the get raped.

      • MikeS

        Idiots be dumb.

      • slumbrew

        Harvard.

I forgot where I heard “severely educated” but it’s appropriate.

      • Lackadaisical

That’s a great turn of phrase.

      • Pat

So she’s fine with suspending the emissions standards that necessitate the catalytic converter, right?

      • slumbrew

No, no, no – they just have to armor the catalytic converter so it’s nigh-impossible to remove.

      • Lackadaisical

So we’re going to call in the German engineers?

      • Rat on a train

It should be inside the car.

      • slumbrew

I do like how she asserts “[it’s] super easy to remove”.

You just have to jack up the car (or look for one with high-clearance), crawl under it with your battery-powered reciprocating saw and cut out the catalytic converter.

The sort of thing one might do almost by accident and not at all some sort of premeditated thievery.

      • slumbrew

        It’s impressive, really.

      • pistoffnick

And I don’t give a fuck what the Bro thinks.

      • pistoffnick

        Et tu MikeS?

      • rhywun

        Same.

      • slumbrew

        Echo was great.

The Killing Moon is fantastic. Love that janky piano.

      • slumbrew

        That is excellent.

      • MikeS

The “yeah-aah…driver’s seat” guy was really getting into this jam. 😎

      • slumbrew

Great song aside, “Sniff ‘n’ The Tears” is an all-time terrible band name.

      • MikeS

Absolutely horrible. I sorta want to hear the story behind it, but I’m sure it’s not good.

      • slumbrew

        They’re not wrong.

      • Shirley Knott

‘When naming the band, Roberts suggested “The Tears”, but their manager suggested “Sniff ‘n’ the Tears” because Roberts had hay fever and sniffed a lot.’ Wikipedia. Robert’s being the lead singer.

I had a cassette player that was smaller than a cassette. The cassette tape literally stuck outside the player. I think it was a Sony and I remember paying $50 for it (1986-7 dollars) at a pawn shop. It had bass boost and could play metal cassettes.

    I was pretty fucking cool.

/and I don’t care what the Bro (or MikeS.) thinks

    • Lackadaisical

Look who grew up rich (or is just really old).

      Isn’t $50 in 1987 like $200 now?

  17. Brochettaward

I see you. I see all of you. Touching yourself while thinking of me.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Are you looking in a mirror?

  18. Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

As this seems to be a music thread, last night I watched what was probably the best music biopic I have seen in a long time.
Autoluminesent. The life of Rowland S. Howard, one of the brightest stars in the Australian post-punk world. And I am gonna guess that no one here has heard of him, but he was the guitarist in Nick Caves first band: the Birthday Party, the major guitar influence of bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream. In other words, he was the guitarist who kicked off shoe gaze. But he also toured with Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, and had some of the sharpest, sadly unheard albums, both in the band These Immortal Souls, and solo.

    Here is a nice sample:

Disney invited a drag queen to its world premiere of The Little Mermaid. Because there wasn’t enough backlash to that flop-in-the-making without adding to it.

    • Chafed

Now they can blame the homophobes when it flops.

      • Brochettaward

They already had the racists. How many scapegoats do they need?

    • Scruffyy Nerfherder

I encourage this behavior. Run it into the ground.

  20. Brochettaward

There weren’t ancient aliens, but there were…ancient Firsters.

    • Ted S.

Going on about “firsting” does get old, doesn’t it?

      • Brochettaward

Firsting is the oldest activity known to humanity. It predates spoken language. It predates the use of tools. I have seen the primitive Firsts with my Third Eye. It is old, yes, but never old. That would be absurd. It is as natural part of the state of the world as Ted S. shitting his pants every morning.

    Mornin’

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Shirley, Sean, and U!

Yesterday after work I dropped in at the alternate fitness center I’m thinking of joining instead of the Y. It looks great! Seems to have the facilities I want (including water aerobics classes at a convenient time AND on even more nights than at the Y!) at MUCH lower membership fees than I’ve been paying! I didn’t even think to ask about their locker room policy – I’m sold on the price and quality alone. I’m kicking myself (also a form of exercise) for not thinking of this long ago!

    Driver’s Seat sparked this memory.

These last two are giving me WLIR flashbacks, back when I was a yute

      • rhywun

        WLIR

Boy did I get an earful about them in college.

      • UnCivilServant

Sounds like a broadcast code. Was it a radio station?

      • slumbrew

        Yep:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WLIR

That ’82-’91 stretch was me going from 12 to 21, so quite influential in a young Slum’s life.

      • UnCivilServant

        I see.

’82-’91 was me going from 0 to 9, so I didn’t have any say in what music was played in the house.

      • rhywun

Yes. “Alternative music” out of Long Island.

    • Gender Traitor

That seems to be a perfectly reasonable conclusion…which of course means that quite a few people are bound to disagree (or ask about the race, gender, and political affiliation of the searchee before forming their opinion.)

      • UnCivilServant

The person encountering the cops in these kinds of cases is typically a criminal, because the immediate negative consequences for the law-abiding tend not to be worth the expense of dragging it through the courts. So I don’t reach this conclusion based upon the person, but upon how the law aught to be applied. I’d probably dislike the accused greatly if I dug into his character. It’s just that character is irrelevant insofar as rights are concerned. I know a lot of people won’t take the same approach, and would be shouting various talking points were this a higher profile case.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Too easy for the cops who have some sense to tag team you by breaking up what would otherwise be violations into individual components they undertake as a team. No sir, I don’t like it.

      • UnCivilServant

My take as well. We don’t need another loophole or magic ritual to permit what would be impermissable normally.

    • WTF

One of the few cases that Sotomayor will likely get right.

    • UnCivilServant

I do not want to talk to a computer.

      • MikeS

It’s often preferable to talking to people.

      • Scruffyy Nerfherder

Compared to talking to mushmouthed idiots?

        I’ll take it.

      • WTF

^This. At least the AI will enunciate so you can understand what it’s saying.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

So a number six combo meal. Would you like a new Google Pixel 7 with that? We offer financing.

      • UnCivilServant

“No! I said ‘Six-piece Chicken Nuggets’.”

      • Certified Public Asshat

        Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

    Preparing students for the future

Under proposed changes to school system policies, all teachers would provide “retakes” and “redos” for all students on certain class assignments, and the higher grade would be recorded for the student. The change also calls for a decrease in the percentage of homework in the calculation of a student’s overall grade.

And, assignments turned in after the due date but before the end of a teaching unit would have to be accepted for credit, though a student may still be penalized up to 10% for the late submission.

Middle and high school students would be graded on a scale from A-E, instead of A-F

The county considered making 50% the lowest grade a student can receive on an assignment, regardless of if and when it’s submitted.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

They’re really going to turn out a fine bunch of young people who are prepared for the real world and all of the challenges of life. A fine bunch indeed.

      • Sean

There’s always gonna be winners & losers, but they don’t have to encourage the latter.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

It’ll also disincentivize those who would be winners but need some kind of external motivation. A bad policy all around.
