When Nobody Wants to See Your Tits

An update of the Anheuser-Busch self immolation saga:  they didn’t just piss off the rednecks, now they pissed off the gays.  I can’t wait to see how they figure out how to piss off the Mexicans.

This is my review of Pariah Brewing How Bout them Oats:

An odd article was thrown out into the ether that somehow or another ended up in a place where I could see it. It was premised on something so off the wall I had no choice but to read it.

In the interest of maintaining our family friendly designation, I found the least objectionable photo of this woman.

The premise?  The HBO show Girls was anti-liberal to its core, and Lena Dunham did it on purpose.  The argument begins with a premise that is almost universally agreed, that nobody on that show in any way is a good person.  They then point out the utter lack of diversity in the cast by identifying the only black character throughout the show was a short lived character that happened to be an Ayn Rand fan.  It continues:

Ray again commits a liberal faux-pas when a rival coffee shop opens up. The shop itself is a perfect parody of 2010s hipster businesses, with the coffee shop (named Helvetica, another perfect encapsulation of this sort of business) having the pointless gimmick of not providing lids, resulting in people stealing them from Ray’s shop. When he confronts them, he misgenders the nonbinary gender goblin employee, played by Lena Dunham’s gender goblin sister**, and is scolded.

The scene makes it clear that the hipster coffee shop and its gender goblin employees are the butt of this joke, especially given the fact that the scene was written just as trans ideology was first taking shape and wasn’t yet the cause célèbre of the left. Yes, Lena Dunham’s sister is nonbinary now, but I cannot find another reading for this scene. It’s not a teaching moment for Ray, or a moment that shows his generation’s values are out of style. They are making fun of a very specific sort of business and the very specific sort of people who might work there, while poking fun of pronoun policing.

A similar incident later in the series shows to me that Lena was likely getting bombarded with trans propaganda at this time and was trying to reconcile it with her prior beliefs. Clearly Lena wasn’t at the woke position yet. A women’s business group in the show admits they have no idea what the fashionable position on admitting trans people is supposed to be, whether it’s feminist to embrace the issue, or more feminist to gatekeep. While Lena now poses with her sister regularly and says all the right things, the show reflects that she likely had improper opinions at the time.

It continues mostly pointing out more evidence the show was not intended to portray feminism as defined by millennials coming of age as necessarily positive.  Contrast this with other shows from earlier generations like The Wonder Years—a very positive representation of growing up in the 60’s.  Nevertheless, a fair number reading right now are reminiscing about the distasteful things they might do with Winnie.

I will admit I only watched one episode after a slew of articles on Breitbart spilled gallons of digital ink explaining why the show was terrible, only to be topped by how terrible a human being Lena Dunham is.  28 year old me thought the show was dumb, and the only offensive part about it was nobody wants to see that lady naked—but we did anyways.  My issue with the argument the show is subliminally based, is it gives way too much credit to Dunham for being capable of playing 4D chess.

The same 4D chess argument thats become rather prevalent in right wing circles.  Maybe people are just dumb?

Incidentally, this beer is also from ten years ago.  It pours like pretty decent chicken stock, smells like grapefruit, and has quite a bit of body.  Its not so hoppy that it brings to mind the IPA arms race a few years ago (Triple IPA anyone?)but overall has me reflect on millennial hipster culture in a profoundly negative way.  Its fine.  If you like it, you’ll like it.  I don’t.  Pariah Brewing How Bout them Oats:  2.1/5  6.2% ABV 30 IBU

    OFFS!

The whole tawdry affair belongs in marketing textbooks under “don’t do any of this”.

    • Brochettaward

I don’t know. Bud is learning a lesson, but the media industry? They’re just going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole as they run up debt and lose market value. There has to be some financial sense behind it. Something to gain.

      • EvilSheldon

A tax-funded bailout? Nationalization of the media? Both? Neither?

I have doubts future marketing majors ever read about it at all, let alone read it as a failure.

Thanks to Gov Shitstain, yet another carpetbagger politician like the current gov.

I would think the Democratic Pary already has enough criminals on staff.

      • juris imprudent

Not when it comes to having the will to kill – there’s a lot of squish in the party. This will help stiffen their spines.

    • Brochettaward

Picking two murderers as the face of your cause probably isn’t the best strategy in anything but a solidly blue enclave where reason goes out the window.

But I reject the notion that people who commit crimes should be punished in all facets of their life until the day they die. Just because something rises to the level of felony, which really isn’t something just doled out to hardened career criminals.

      • Brochettaward

If you are an employer and don’t want to hire someone with a conviction, that’s your right. But what you have now is a system where employers have blanket bans on hiring all felons, people with some misdemeanors etc. And in many careers, this isn’t just freedom of association but government enforced. I’m pretty sure if we were to look at the history of corporate America adopting those hiring practices, we’d find plenty of push from the government to do so. Now it’s just entrenched and the way things are.

      • Brochettaward

Final point – most of the people in prison are going to get out. That’s reality. What you have now is a system that is designed to get as many of them back into it as possible. The system is designed almost entirely with retribution in mind. What sense does it make to have a system solely designed to inflict punishment that is going to release desperate and broken people back into society with only a fleeting chance and hope to turn things around?

      • Gustave Lytton

I do agree mostly, but I think the corporate policy on ex felon hires is more civil lability driven. What sane legal counsel is going to sign off on ex-felons wearing your corporate logo and interacting with the public? Or even fellow employees? Banning considering that or on applications is just more government thumb pushing down.

In general, I think ex cons should have few or any government restrictions on their rights or they should still be locked up. Prohibitions on otherwise lawful activities such as alcohol use or gun ownership/possession shouldn’t exist. Even more so for preconviction release. Voting I could see as restored after a period of years (say 3-5). Instead, it’s voting by incarcerated and pretending that past history never predicts future actions.

      • R C Dean

Also, a blanket ban helps you avoid anti discrimination lawsuits.

Anyone remember that Stephen J. Cannell show Silk Stalkings? Was it any good after both of the main characters were replaced with a new duo? I never saw the later episodes.

    • EvilSheldon

I remember the show, but I don’t remember a single thing about it save it being complete trash ala a low-rent Baywatch. The kind of show that you watch every night, but you never tell another living soul.

    • slumbrew

All I remember is that Mitzi Kapture was a bit of alright. I don’t recall the replacements.

      • Chafed

And she went on to Baywatch for a couple of seasons!

    • one true athena

Huh, i didn’t remember there were replacements at all. The show must have been sent off to a really terrible syndication time so I never saw it after the first maybe 2 seasons. I see on imdb that Chris Potter was the replacement dude, and he was all right on the Kung Fu show just before he joined Silk Stalkings. ANd he was the voice of Gambit on the X-Men Animated series for whatever any of that is worth.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I vaguely remember it, but never watched it. Was it one of the ones on the USA network?

    • Gustave Lytton

Yes, and no. Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture’s banter and chemistry was the main reason for watching the show.

Rip Steven J Cannell, a giant of schlocky enjoyable tv shows.

I heard Lena was family friendly. Didn’t she admit to finger blasting her younger sister.

    Good thread here.

3700 trans kids as DoD defendants? Jeezus H.

  10. Count Potato

This is a long shot, but does anyone know where I can find the video of The Blaire White Project “Ben Shapiro Can’t Stop Being Anti-Freedom” 24 April? It looks like the YouTube was taken down (I’m guessing because she talks about showing off her new gun). I can find the audio, but can’t find the video.

I’m also guessing it got taken down very fast because I’m not seeing it on any mirror sites.

    • Chafed

I have no idea but have you tried Rumble and Odysee?

That Family Friendly thingy went away five years ago. Anyone can buy the web address and do what they’d like with it though. That could be interesting if it got into some joker’s hands.

Zosia Mamet (daughter of David) was on the show, and she had a fantastic body that we got glimpses of in lingerie and such)

Same. Been too busy to keep it clean. Just assembled a new bike for my daughter and made it even worse. Tomorrow I hope to straighten my work bench and get under control.

Props to him. I wouldn’t have done it. Now, at least. I used to be a rabblerouser like that.

Same. I thought it was terrific.

Miracle. After ten years I finally attended a grandchild’s sports event where their team won! 9 y.o. went three for three. No one left the mound sobbing, no one was picking grass in the outfield. No one got a trophy or trip to McD for participating. No parents berated the umpire or yelled at their kid for not living up to Dad’s expectations. Bonus: a couple of hot moms.

    • Tundra

Wow! Congrats to you and the kid!

    • Grosspatzer

Nice! Just checked in to a hotel in Wilson NC, two groups of kids here – youth baseball team from Greenville here for a tournament and an older bunch wearing soccer gear. Baseball team won their first two games, bunch of happy kids. Parents are celebrating with cold ones in the hotel lobby. Local pizza is not bad – the proprietor is an old Italian lady with a thick accent.

      • Tundra

Having adult children was cool for awhile. I do miss the events. We have neighbors with 8 and 4 year olds who invite us to stuff. Apparently we’re the third set of grandparents lol.

I spent an hour last night playing catch with the 8 yo and his dad, getting ready for a game this morning (they won). Other than being old, I think being a grandpa could be pretty fun.

    • mexican sharpshooter

      Hellyeah!

      “picking grass in the outfield”
ah yes, I remember the days of the roly-poly bugs being more interesting than the ball. And the memorable field where some kind of vole/mole/ground squirrel thing kept poking its head up to check what was going on

    • R.J.

      Quite appropriate.
