It’s time for Spuds annual pilgrimage to the ocean for Mother’s Day and moms birthday. 94 this year. It will be somewhat bittersweet, given that we lost a sister last September. At least the weather looks nice.
But, hey! That will not keep us from, the Links!
Looks like some stodgy old Limey got himself a new hat. And sorry, we earned the right to ignore you well over 200 years ago by kicking your ass.
I don’t expect to see him anytime soon.
Screenwriters staring down the barrel of future irrelevance.
Okay, that’s it. Lame news day. Have a great evening!
Best wishes, Spud. Have fun.
Great music, Spud. Takes me back
That was the first album I bought in second grade at a school rubbish sale. I liked the album cover.
Enjoy, Spud. I’ll be on the beach next week meself – bittersweet, uncle’s funeral on Wednesday, but I will also get to spend some time with cousins I don’t see much any more.
Fox News site has some weird javascript which breaks Firefox and other webkit browsers. Works in Brave, though. What a PITA.
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Working for me, other than nagging about missing DRM for their video stream.
Also Firefox is on the Gecko engine, not WebKit. It’s working on my WebKit-based browser as well, but that’s webit2gtk on linux, so YMMV.
Thanks.
It’s broken on both FF and Falkon for me. I can get it working on Falkon by disabling javascript (which introduces other issues since this i not configurable at the site level). Oh well.
Which part of the site is breaking? Maybe I can replicate it.
Blank page when launched. In Falkon, turn off javascript and it’s good (but 50% of other sites are then broken). Might be an issue with some library on this distro (Mageia).
Weird. It loads alright on all my browsers, with the above-mentioned nag about DRM, which naturally I won’t enable. I wonder if there’s a popup nag warning that’s loading before the page is displayed and getting blocked.
Well, I’ve got plenty of time on my hands this week…
Sorry about the uncle, ‘Patzer. Death comes too us all.
Thanks. 89, he had a good run. Taught me how to play baseball and how to sober up. I miss him already.
That’s a good uncle, on both counts.
Mazel tov! Here’s to many more.
It’s good to be king
Chuckie’s crown would be a great new character in the H&H universe.
OMG I want to hear CP doing the accent.
Just thinking about it makes me chuckle.
‘Core, g’day mate. Gots me a new cat for me ‘ead!
No, it’s chapeau.
The Hat fantasizing about being a crown, for Donald of course.
Like it would be any different at an American coronation.
Federal spending drives job growth?
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/05/biden-say-goodbye-to-job-growth-if-debt-ceiling-isnt-lifted.html
I wouldn’t find it shocking, given the only areas of job growth in the last 20 years outside the tech sector have been in health care, which is quasi-public, and education, which is public-public.
Probably plenty of growth in black markets, off-the-books jobs and barter. Those are hard to measure.
Uber. That sort of thing. But, to Biden’s point, that was only possible through cheap money, IE the fed.
And just straight up government jobs.
“we earned the right to ignore you well over 200 years ago by kicking your ass.”
Huzzah!
I ignored that farce hard. I didn’t even have to collect some perfectly good muck.
I celebrated by dumping loose tea into the toilet.
“Tucker Carlson Wants to Return to TV Before 2025. Will Fox Let Him?”
No. That’s the point of keeping him in contractual limbo. Smells of election interference if you ask me.
They certainly don’t want him making money for someone else.
That article is a steaming pile of garbage.
“A Black man has been charged with fatally shooting two White strangers in the back of the head in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as part of what authorities are calling a racially motivated hate crime.”
The BLACK man is just another victim of white-supremacy.
There’s so many black faces of white supremacy nowadays they could start a stage show…
I heard that Edwin Pearce Christy is auditioning for performers in a traveling variety troupe.
They shouldn’t have turned their back to his Michael Jackson routine.
I did not read the link, but something tells me that the authorities calling it a hate crime are not the feds.
I have returned from my geekery, with many new books to read, memories of time with the nephews, and several SMITH related prints.
I did manage to forget one of the items on my list, and blanked on stopping at the meadary that I drove right past. However, I’m back home now, and in for the night, so I give you the weekend Zoom/Happy Hour/FCBD recap link that will start at 2000 Eastern.
Over-the-top hat? Check
Over-the-top dress? Check.
Bottomless mimosa? Check.
Now win the Derby, Kingsbarn!!
Wooot!
I’ve always been interested in mixing up a classic Kentucky Derby mint julep, but I can’t bring myself to put sugar and mint even into bottom-shelf bourbon.
Oh, but you should. Or go somewhere that somebody else can make them for you.
I could drink mint juleps by the bucketful.
A great drink on a hot day.
Definitely true. On a hot day, they are deceptively delicious and refreshing but they will bring out the real woman in every southern belle.
So, the teeth just drop out?
Yeah, I have no problem cutting any of the brown liquors with various additives from time to time. Each choice has its place.
It’ll depend on the shelf of the liquor for me. Top shelf doesn’t get mixed. Mid-range and below is fair game.
Then I’m good because I’m not paying for top-shelf of nearly anything.
I’ll mix anything. Mixing 18-year-old Glendronnach in a Highlander or a Blood and Sand, doesn’t prevent me enjoying it with a splash of mineral water.
You own the booze, the booze doesn’t own you. Drink it how your like it.
If made right, they’re a decent drink. If made poorly… they’re a waste of good bourbon that may need to go back through distillation to become palatable.
And since it is the day:
The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved
When I was stuck in luuuuvuulll Kentucky for an afternoon before a work meeting the next day, I went to Churchill Downs.
I was technically in the lobby before closing so they allowed me to take the tour. The tour guide was a young African American kid who’d clearly been steeped into the facts and myths of the Downs and the Derby. He was thrilled to have an educated tourist, and I was thrilled to have a 1:1 tour that I could use to ask questions here and there and influence how much time we spent on various things.
It felt like hallowed ground. I’ve had the same feeling at ancient castles, great cathedrals, the battleground of the final battle of the Persian wars—“being there” is a thing.
The girlfriend and I took the tour off season. I didn’t get the same feel as you did, but I’ve never been a big horse racing fan. I felt it much more at the Louisville Slugger museum with some of the bats (and replicas) they had there. Finding a relative’s name on the wall helped too.
You were right across the street from my very best museum – the Fraiser Museum of American History.
By which I mean guns. Owsley Brown Fraiser was the curator of one of the greatest historic weapons collections outside the Royal Armouries of Great Britain. If you’re in Louisville, check it out. Have a drink at the Proof bar at 21C while you’re there.
I toured so many amazing cathedrals during 11 months in Europe they all started to run together after a while.
But I agree that being there is a thing.
Chinese temples.
Same experience, except in one week instead of 11 months. They really started to blend together.
Supposedly, it is like going to Koln cathedral. Me, Koln, all the way. Or a dog track.
I don’t like horses.
I remember climbing up a tower in that one.
That one is particularly memorable.
I’m going to be there in a few days. Anything specific I should seek out? Just take it all in?
Just take it all in. But, if memory serves, the bomb shelter from WWII is something to contemplate.
Don’t miss the Roman ruins – forget the actual name but it’s right there downtown.
In Koln there is a decent museum of the Roman period of the area and part of the ancient Roman walls and sewage system are still about.
Definitely enjoy some of the local bier style (koelsch) and if the sun is out the bodies in the primary park and along the river. The old part of the city has been decently rebuilt after the unpleasantness of the mid 1940’s.
The city I lived in (Würzburg) was so thoroughly destroyed they considered rebuilding it somewhere else.
But they rebuilt in place and you can’t really tell the difference until you look more closely.
The thing I remember most about that is the photo of the city where it was all basically rubble except the cathedral.
Thanks, all. I will definitely seek out the Roman ruins in Koln. We’re also going to Aachen, which will be super cool. A lot of very old Charlemagne history there. A long weekend in Munich is also on the itinerary. Can’t wait.
Being there is definitely a thing. So is touching the bricks (or whatever). If I’m in a historical site, I’m forever (to the consternation of the normies I may be with) pausing to stand in a particular spot or touch the things that are physical artifacts.
Standing on top of Big Kill Devil Hill (“Kitty Hawk”) and looking where Wright Brothers flew was magical
HE and the others are correct. There is something special about being there. As somebody who values the study of history it can send a shiver up my spine being there. As great a good book or movie can be actually seeing and touching a historical spot connect me with history at a deeper leve.
It is the same (for me) with amateur astronomy as well. Modern imagery available space based platforms have transformed planetary science and astronomy. But I still remember the rush I felt as a mere 1/4 eagle when I saw the rings of Saturn for the first time with my own eyes. I also used the same telescope to look at the moon after the first moon walk. There was no way to see Apollo but just watching the area around the terminator was mesmerizing. Somehow even at nine I knew that mankind had entered a new reality.
+1 brainstorm
I thought mint juleps were outlawed in the 1860’s. Now we got to raise an army and march on Kentucky.
Because you are gearing up to release the next one this fall.
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/05/who-declares-end-to-covid-global-public-health-emergency.html
What would the world do without the release of a blockbuster virus every 3 years?!
I hope the next one is directed by Jerry Bruckheimer. If we’re going to live in the theater of the absurd I’d at least like to see some cool explosions.
Michael Bay #FTW!
Michael Bay presents: EXPLOSIONS!!!!
Instead we’ll get more derivative, stupid J.J. Abrams viruses.
As long as there are screen flares.
Eh, humans like, possibly need ritual, so I’m not going to diss the coronation. Pomp and circumstance is fun once in a while.
I like my church just fine but we have a distressing lack of ritual. Our meetings have an program, which includes nothing ceremonial. It’s why I like going to Midnight Mass. That and the professional musicians.
Our national rituals include displaying our flags anywhere, everywhere, all the time, popping of fireworks, yelling “Fuck, yeah, ‘Murka!” and watching sappy Budweiser commercials on some random Sunday in February. ← That is not a dig.
I culturally appropriated the crowing of the new British monarch to get my pomp & circumstance fix for the year, followed by the Kentucky Derby.
There’s a lot to be said for traditions, particularly when surrounded by individuals who can only tear down, not create.
I watched some of it and was struck by how religious the whole thing was. I mean, I knew that going in but still. I couldn’t help but think that it was probably the first mass that half the audience had ever sat through.
The girlfriend is watching it behind me. The first statement she made after starting it was, “This is four hours long?!”
You can safely tell her it’s over after two hours. I stopped watching after Charlie and what’s-her-name rode off into the rain.
What a clown.

Go ahead and charge Trump with “seditious conspiracy” or some other bullshit. I triple dog dare you.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/in-trump-probe-special-counsel-zooms-in-on-possible-criminal-charges-42f60b4?mod=djemalertNEWS
Why? What’s going to happen? Are people going to finally rise up and do something? It took the feds laying out the welcome mat for them to “storm” the capital where they promptly did….nothing. Not a single god damn thing. Then they sat back and as they were rounded up and incarcerated for it while their political counterparts were allowed to burn down cities.
Also, I love the sourcing in that article. Sometimes it’s according to vaguely described “people.” Other times, it’s the person. Who or what is their connection to the matter? They may or may not be familiar with the matter.
“familiar with the matter” is so great. Well, golly, reporter-person, I’m glad you’re not sharing a quote from someone who isn’t familiar with the matter! thanks for doing the absolute minimum of your job!
Police responding to shooting at Dallas-area outlet mall
Hope all of our DFW glibs are safe.
“the Collin County Sheriff said the shooter is dead.”
May we have an identity?
Getchyer hot take here! No waiting, hot takes NOW!
Someday there will be a betting line on the general appearance of unidentified assailants.
“The shooter is near!”
Hmmm…sounds like authentic frontier gibberish to me.
Spaniard just told me about it. Both of us are fine.

“fine”
“Not with holes.” We are having fajitas, listening to ZZ Top and lamenting the website issues that keep him from commenting.
Other than the squirrels, that sounds like a lovely evening.
” keep him from commenting.” Sure, that is what all the imaginary friends say.
Since it is Derby Day and some moistened bint in a lake threw a sword at a guy with big ears there really can be only one ZZ Top song for today.

In a NY minute…Rangers coach out after two years: https://www.nhl.com/news/gerard-gallant-out-as-new-york-rangers-coach/c-344194696
*lolsnort*
I’ve always thought “coach” was one of the worst jobs out there. I mean, how much control do you really have over the players on any given day, beyond general strategery?
But yeah, here we go again. Let’s try another reboot. It will totally work this time.
Coaching is mostly taking a group of people and trying to figure out how to use their individual skill sets in order to put them in a position to win games. It’s really fucking hard, actually, to do it well.
Stop making me want another Trump presidency.

Tucker Carlson could be his press-sec.
For five seconds.
Charles has a new hat, huh? If it’s anything other than a beanie with a propeller on top it’s inappropriate.
How about one with buffalo horns?
Hey, JI, what is a good email address for you?
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Wednesday that “senior, experienced prosecutors” are investigating Neely’s death, which the city’s medical examiner determined was a homicide caused by compression of the neck.
“This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely’s life,” a spokesperson for Bragg said in a statement.
“As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation, we will review the Medical Examiner’s report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records. This investigation is being handled by senior, experienced prosecutors.”
Most importantly, they have to find out if the guy voted for Trump.
NYC, the land of the violent homeless and you’ll go to prison if you defend yourself from them. A bit long for a bumper sticker but it strikes me as a good descriptor.
To be fair, it may be a little more “nuanced” than that, as the kids say.
I would think it’d be possible to have restrained that lunatic without killing him, at least.
I agree actually but wouldn’t charge, I don’t think the guy meant to kill him and I wouldn’t want to further empower the lunatics.
If the kids understood nuance, American culture wouldn’t be the hot mess it currently is.
Kids never understand nuance. The problem is the adults who are egging the kids on instead of working on restraining them to some extent.
I think that is failing to give credit to kids who actually think. Nuance isn’t complicated on its own but outside pressure forces them to think otherwise
Me being an old person now, by “kids” I was thinking more of the generations in their 20’s and 30’s. But yes…they all are being egged on by a group of morons old enough to know better.
To OBE and MikeS: I was making a fast comment in between chores at home. I don’t disagree with any of your responses. My point is more that kids who care about anything are usually zealots who see the world in terms of black & white. I think that is valuable and important in bringing needed changes. But, yes, the world is nuance and maturity is needed to get alongside zealous kids & say, “I get where you are coming from, but let’s talk about strategy, or differences.” Instead, those who should be applying some brakes to the zealots are saying, “you want to burn the system down? You’re not going to do it that way. Let me help you with some better accelerants.”
With all the outraged demonstrators not one stepped forward and offered to help Neely before this event took place.
C’mon, demonstrators, each of you step up and take a homeless person home with you, even if its to sleep on the couch.
If you are so concerned and demonstrate after the fact, just be a little preventive before the fact. Take a homeless person to lunch/dinner, better yet, cook them a good meal. Let them live with you and share their experiences. Personally intervene.
Otherwise your demonstrations aren’t too impressive.
“That’s the government’s job.”
NYC; SAVE A LIFE, GO TO JAIL

If FOX keeps paying him to keep him from working for somebody else, can Carlson make free youtube videos as a hobby?
Depends on what is in the non-compete clause that is likely part of his contract, I suppose.
I don’t know, but I’d pay to see Tarlson Cucker with a suspiciously large nose and mustache do YouTube videos.
Lip syncing a sock puppet?
Is that the case or does he have a standard noncompete clause of some sort? At this point he could probably violate his contract and make considerably more money working for someone else. Valutainment, a YouTube channel and I guess it has its own website as well, has already offered him $100 million over five years and from what I understand it’s not an empty offer.
Violating a contract means Fox can sue for enforcement and/or damages, not just Carlson doesn’t paid.
I think this was supposed to be Old Guy music.

What, the idea of lab grown meat doesn’t appeal to you? Well me either, from what I understand that stuff’s more akin to a lab grown tumor. I bet the Klaus Schwabses of the world would still be allowed to get it.

From the last thread, the most disappointing part of the whole video was the media execs showed not the slightest trace of embarrassment or shame.
Enjoy.
Amazing the Tim Hortons staff didn’t chuck him out for the outside food. I guess when you’re a bum, you can do whatever.
Wanting salt, but complaining about sugar and carbs and the ketchup being out of season. Jeezus. When I was in Basic, I was looking for every calorie I could get my hands on. Sugar on the grits, the fat boy option because you got more food, salad dressing packets, whatever. Yet he can throw eggs away because he needs to peel them completely. What a fuckstick.
It’s so over the top I’m not sure it’s actually real. Yet it probably is.

A couple people suggest he might have OCD or similar and truly believes the food is unfit to eat. I choose to believe that to stop me from hating him.
So what if he is OCD?
One function of shaming is to help people keep their mental illnesses in check.

A sled hockey ray of sunshine. I didn’t even know we had a youth sled hockey team in the area. Cool stuff. Maybe one year ToK will be coming up here for a tourney.
Mike! I feel like I haven’t seen you in weeks. You OK?
He is fine. Just has lots and lots of seconding to do and ponder. He is a very busy guy…seconding.
More like months. All is well. Just been very busy. I’ll try and pop back in more. Someone has to show Bro’ how to First.
I issued a proclamation earlier today that all should have been grateful for. It applied to both man and Firster alike and freed them from the oppression of the panted world. What was I given in return? I was witlessly insulted.
What is it that they say about no good deed?
I am not wearing pants right now. I am in a coffee shop. Nobody has said a word to me. All is well.

ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE
I wonder how often women actually used coat-hangers.
Oh, and… WTF.
I wonder how many women would really resort to use coat hangers or do-it-yourself-abortions that put their life at risk simply because it’s too hard to travel a little bit further or…GASP…to the next state over! These bitches were talking about this in 2016.
I love the paragraph on how Roe never really reached its true potential because not enough babies were murdered. There should have been a tax funded abortion clinic on every street corner in every ghetto.
They’re just showing how much they like Joan Crawford.

Sad. They don’t show her taint tattoo.

It looks like we might finally be turning the corner on this madness with woman athletes beginning to speak out. On a related note, I wonder how long it’ll be before they replace tweet compilation article writers with ChatGPT or some equivalent, truly a gutter writing style.
Navratilova has been pushing back for years. She is almost uniquely positioned to do so and still keep her commentator gigs and such rather than being cancelled.

You’ll be shocked to hear that it’s been gray and drizzly in the Pacific Northwest. Today high around 60, cloudy, maybe some sun later in the week.
Things are blooming like there’s no tomorrow!! Animals have upped their flirtation game. It’s funny to see.
I’m just glad to see the sun, got a 10 am tee time at the course with some chums.
