Homeless encampments? I feel like we’re in another Great Depression. But that can’t be true, because the president says we’ve got the best economy ever, and why would he lie?

    • Drake

I strongly suspect that most of them would be in state mental hospitals a few decades ago.

      • SDF-7

The true psychos / schizos, sure… what happened back in the day when we had sanitariums and involuntary confinement when it came to just “does drugs. doesn’t want to stop. won’t obey rules of program” — were those folks just lumped in? Because it is at least 50/50 from what I can tell between actual crazies and just druggies who like the lifestyle.

      • Pope Jimbo

I almost admire the drunks and druggies who have stripped their lives down to just drinking and doing drugs.

Walking past them on my way to work, there have been a few times I’ve thought they might be right. Doesn’t take much to get your drink on if you don’t worry about all that other bullshit like eating or sleeping indoors. Or taking baths.

      • Drake

Or having a family, or teeth…

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

        Teeth are overrated.

        Damn right they are.

    • SDF-7

He also keeps saying we couldn’t own cannons around the Founding… so why would he lie? — Because he’s either an asshole or an idiot. Or an asshole idiot. Or an idiot asshole.

One asshole I’d really like Steve to visit… and by visit, mean….

      • Rebel Scum

“[if] you want to work against the government, you need an F-16.”

Interesting how he keeps using this line. I’ll give my standard response: Complex weapons systems require complex support structures that have multiple points of vulnerability. It would not be all that difficult for a determined population to turn the governments fancy fighter aircraft into multimillion dollar paperweights.

      • SDF-7

ACKSHUALLY — and to be fair, I think he said F-15s last time. So at least he’s coming down into the more affordable Teen Series Fighters.. ;P

      • kinnath

Ammunition. Fuel. Spare Parts. Trained maintenance personnel. Trained operators.

Just a few of the potential choke points.

      • SDF-7

Not to mention the sheer overkill if we actually did get into a hot war. The odds are very good that at least in the beginning, you’re talking more guerrilla actions anyway — folks aren’t going to line up in nice Citizen’s Militia Brigades to let the Air Force bomb them (and if they aren’t all gone, A-10’s would be better anyway for loitering… more likely drones of some kind). Only once the government infrastructure was hurting would a resistance that wasn’t completely stupid show up for a more conventional fight. Barring states just seceding, of course — but in that scenario, you’d have the state Air National Guards fighting anyway.

He’s still an asshole idiot, anyway.

      • Rat on a train

Go with bombing if you want much of the US to look like Bakhmut.

      • R.J.

I would expect Biden to try to bomb the Louisiana/Texas refineries on a weekly basis if secession was tried. He would rely entirely on the California refinery for gas. He has depleted the national reserve, so he would be fucked, fuel wise. The South has most of the capability because us poor southerners and our property never mattered to people like him. Might as well build those stinky ol’ refineries there.

      • Drake

All stuff done by people with home addresses.

      • juris imprudent

I suppose if they give it any consideration at all, they dismiss it with you couldn’t do that.

      • Rebel Scum

Then there is this tired, false bs.

There’s a lot of things we can change, because the American people by and large agree you don’t need a weapon of war.

All weapons are weapons of war. Unless you intend to argue that muskets of the time of the founding (or prior, or spears, or swords) that were commonly owned were not also used in warfare.

And guess what? It doesn’t say that you can own any weapon you want

It says the government can’t tell me what I can/can’t own.

Even during when it was passed, you couldn’t own a cannon. You can’t own a machine gun… No, I’m serious.

        You could/can and people did.

“You know, I love these guys who say the Second Amendment is — you know, the tree of liberty is water with the blood of patriots,” Biden sneered.

Always one to mess up the quote. The blood of tyrants applies as well. And way to insult the meaning of the quote and the person that said it.

      • SDF-7

It just makes it abundantly clear that he doesn’t believe the government is accountable to the people. At all.

“What… these plebians think they can tell US what to do? HA!”

        Idiot asshole as stated.

      • Ownbestenemy

Maybe an idiot and asshole but the idiot and asshole knows that the idiots and assholes in the media will dutifully parrot it as if truth along with their army on the socials to do so also.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

That dumb fuck has no clue how god awful and destructive a new US civil war would be. For starters, there is nowhere a politician and their family could hide.

Digital marketing tycoon Chris Brown, 61, told The Sun that he paid a $10,000 deposit for the trip along with his friend Hamish Harding, the 58-year-old British billionaire who is among the five still missing.

But he grew alarmed when he saw how OceanGate’s 21-foot Titan submersible was made up of off-the-shelf components.

“I found out they used old scaffolding poles for the sub’s ballast — and its controls were based on computer game-style controllers,” the shocked would-be explorer told the UK paper.

  9. Sensei

So given Asian status on the victim scale if we did an “Asian People Food” site would that be OK?

For years, Cai thought she was alone in disparaging the tasteless cold cuts, lukewarm salads and microwaved soups that are staples of contemporary Western urban life. Then, earlier this year, she saw a widely circulated video on the Chinese lifestyle app Xiaohongshu depicting a passenger on a Swiss train putting mustard onto lettuce leaves before stuffing them into her mouth with cold cuts.

A new low for “White people food,” graduate student Huang Jinglan wrote in the caption of the clip she filmed.

Mocking “White people food” is all the rage on China’s heavily censored internet. Tens of thousands of people — many of them Chinese citizens living abroad — have joined Huang in the social media trend of sharing their bland workday meals with the hashtag #WhitePeopleFood. Photos of unseasoned chicken breast, poached eggs, celery sticks, baked beans and dry crackers abound.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/06/21/china-white-people-food-viral-social-media/

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Having grown up with deviled ham on white bread, this amuses me.

It’s not nearly as destructive a trend as the white supremacy kick that’s so popular here in the States

      • SDF-7

Yeah, I’ll take a nice fried baloney on white with a bit of mustard over eating anything that doesn’t try to eat me first, thank you very much.

      • Pope Jimbo

It is a sad commentary on how far we’ve strayed from our agrarian past that people don’t realize that boloney and deviled ham are simply ground up meat gunk that no one would eat on a dare if it hadn’t been disguised.

But thanks to white people food magic, we’ve made ground assholes and cow lips tasty.

It should also be pointed out that when you have several billion hungry people, they will eat just about everything. We have the luxury of being well fed and can be choosy about what we eat. We don’t have to eat weird animals and cover up the taste with blistering hot spices.

      • SDF-7

True enough — and if you go a little further back you get back to our European roots of “Damned well eat every part of that cow, because we ain’t slaughtering another for a while…” Black pudding, gelatin, tripe recipes… we’re very wasteful these days but it wasn’t all that long ago.

I’ll give them spices, of course — after all, the Europeans did make one hell of a trade route just to get black pepper and anything else other than salt for quite a while there. But that’s just a matter of fortunate geography more than anything.

      • Sensei

No virus ever “allegedly” jumped from lettuce to humans and caused a global lockdown.

“Look at white peepul’s crap food” says Chinaman tucking into his virus-infested bat and pangolin stir fry.

    • R C Dean

“tasteless cold cuts, lukewarm salads and microwaved soups that are staples of contemporary Western urban life”

If your cold cuts are tasteless, yer doin’ it wrong.

Is it just me, or are salads always room temperature? I wouldn’t want a hot one, that’s for sure.

And are they staples? For who? And what makes you think they don’t prefer it, since they can get, especially in cities, yes, even American cities, literally any kind of food that is served anywhere on the planet.

      • Brochettaward

That bottom part. American cuisine is a complete mix up of all the best the rest of the world has to offer. You can get any type of food you want just about anywhere, and have it delivered to your fatass and left outside your door so you never even have to interact with another human being.

      • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

        Plus BBQ.

        Never forget that.

    • DrOtto

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – America is the greatest country on earth. You can eat any type of food imaginable here. Have you seen our homeless? We have the fattest homeless population in the world. As I posted Sunday, we got panhandled on father’s day and she was a big girl, probably 5’8″ and 250-275lbs

Well I’m living here in Bidentown

And our Mothers with the IRS

And I’m living here in Bidentown…

      • Tonio

Slight preference for “Bidentown,” but yeah, keep this going in any form possible.

    • The Other Kevin

I like “Bidenvilles”. We need to make that go viral.

“We are going to the floor today to offer what’s called the unanimous consent on a number of different bills to help protect the rights of women in this country. Republicans have a choice. They can object and not allow us to proceed but we believe this is a fight we have to be visible on. A year ago, Roe was overturned and women’s rights were ripped away from them and the chaos that has ensued, and the impact to women and their healthcare is overwhelming. We are going to stand up and fight for women and show everyone what is at stake and invite everyone to be a part of this critical battle in our country.”

“Takes a long time to get places by ship; ship en route”

  15. JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I don’t understand why they made that submarine out of carbon fiber. Carbon’s great in tension, but not in compression, and compression is the issue when you’re under water. It seems there’s not a huge need to save weight. It sounds like one of those things that old white submariners would have advised against, and that’s not inspirational.

    • Ownbestenemy

      Well…

    • R C Dean

I think I saw somewhere they wanted it to be more buoyant. The engineer the fired pointed it that (a) the stuff they got was flawed and (b) the manufacturer wouldn’t rate it to the depth they were going.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I read the thing about buoyancy too, but then they were still using ballast. Maybe ditch the ballast and make the tube out of a material that is good in compression.

      • Tundra

The guy they fired also asked for more testing. I’ve seen this shit so many times, but never when it could kill someone.

      • UnCivilServant

While it’s fitting that it killed the asshole who rejected testing, the collateral damage requires some investigation. I don’t know much about the rest of the fatalities.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

I’m willing to bet money that they didn’t radiograph the entire structure on a regular schedule. There’s a reason the Navy has invested billions in radiographical studies of submarines.

  17. Winston

    https://www.aier.org/article/the-trouble-with-politics-in-pop-culture/

This all matters because in a democracy, our only protection against demagoguery of all sorts, is individual education. Popular culture shouldn’t bear the brunt of that task. Parents should educate their children about the American system. Local schools should have a vested interest in preparing their citizens to be informed voters. Political leaders at every level have a moral obligation to speak truthfully about the challenges we face and the realities and necessary constraints of the system within which we must work. But the entertainment world has a responsibility here, too. With massive audiences and considerable influence, these networks and productions are responsible for the misinformation they distribute.

Why would government-run schools, politicians and leftist Hollywood types want the masses to be safe from demagoguery?

And isn’t the whole point of the artistic and intellectual communities to go on tirades about how terrible the current society is?

  20. Winston

    https://www.econlib.org/library/Mill/mlLbty.html

For the same reason, we may leave out of consideration those backward states of society in which the race itself may be considered as in its nonage. The early difficulties in the way of spontaneous progress are so great, that there is seldom any choice of means for overcoming them; and a ruler full of the spirit of improvement is warranted in the use of any expedients that will attain an end, perhaps otherwise unattainable. Despotism is a legitimate mode of government in dealing with barbarians, provided the end be their improvement, and the means justified by actually effecting that end.

    http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/imperialism/readings/mill.html

To characterize any conduct whatever towards a barbarous people as a violation of the law of nations, only shows that he who so speaks has never considered the subject. A violation of great principles of morality it may easily be, but barbarians have no rights as a nation, except a right to such treatment as may, at the earliest possible period, fit them for becoming one. The only moral laws for the relation between a civilized and a barbarous government are the universal rules of morality between man and man.

I find it interesting that these bits from John Stuart Mill have been glossed over. It puts important context to Mill’s attitudes toward Free Speech, tyranny of custom and experiments in living. Basically he supported Free Speech as long as it allowed civilized people to spread civilized ideas. Tyranny of custom was supposed to cause the end of barbaric customs and replacing them with more civilized ones. Experiments in living were supposed to only apply to civilized people and was supposed to result in civilized behavior.

Oh and who was supposed to define these “civilized people” and define what “civilized behavior” is? Why John Stuart Mill himself of course!

The new Marvel show Secret Invasion is going full on racial wokeness in ways they never would have dared with a tentpole movie like Black Panther. Discussions about mediocre white men, white guys ending up in positions of power just because of who their daddies know (Hollywood does know a lot about that sort of nepotism, I admit – it’s what is killing the industry, but it is hardly confined to just white men), and the entire show is an immigration ‘allegory’ if you can even pretend that the message is hidden.

In a report released on Friday, Kimberly Murray, the independent special interlocutor appointed by Trudeau to investigate the issue of unmarked graves, exhorted politicians to give “urgent consideration” to “civil and criminal [legal] sanctions” against residential-school “denialism.” It’s an idea that’s already been promoted by an MP named Leah Gazan. And Canada’s Justice Minister, David Lametti, says he’s open to the proposal.

In the long run, however, this kind of semantic analysis likely won’t matter much, since any legal effort to censor “denialism” (however that word is defined) would almost certainly be struck down by courts as an infringement on free speech. Canadian constitutional principles permit laws that ban the wilful promotion of “hatred” against identifiable groups. But no one can seriously argue that asking for evidence of unproven murder allegations, or offering dissenting theories about residential schools come close to meeting that standard.

I wouldn’t be so certain Jon.

Anyway interesting that despite Quillette’s Never Trump and pro-lockown stances they may soon find themselves being charged for “genocide denialism”. No matter how much you may try to avoid being labeled a far-right kook as soon as you go against the Narrative in any way they will go after you.

    • R C Dean

So she’s pushing for people to be punished for denying that there were any secret graves?

How much time Foehner may spend behind bars will possibly turn on whether or not he decides to go to trial. It should not be surprising that the D.A. bombarded him with an extensive laundry list of charges, as prosecutors often overcharge in order to scare defendants into taking a plea bargain.

Often = always unless you are on the right political team. Or maybe you just needed to hire the same crack lawyers Hunter had and threaten to take that shit to the Supreme Court. That’d show that prosecutor.

    https://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

“You are dictatorial.” My dear sirs, you are right, that is just what we are. All the experience the Chinese people have accumulated through several decades teaches us to enforce the people’s democratic dictatorship, that is, to deprive the reactionaries of the right to speak and let the people alone have that right.

Democracy is practiced within the ranks of the people, who enjoy the rights of freedom of speech, assembly, association and so on. The right to vote belongs only to the people, not to the reactionaries. The combination of these two aspects, democracy for the people and dictatorship over the reactionaries, is the people’s democratic dictatorship.

The people’s state protects the people. Only when the people have such a state can they educate and remould themselves by democratic methods on a country-wide scale, with everyone taking part, and shake off the influence of domestic and foreign reactionaries (which is still very strong, will survive for a long time and cannot be quickly destroyed), rid themselves of the bad habits and ideas acquired in the old society, not allow themselves to be led astray by the reactionaries, and continue to advance — to advance towards a socialist and communist society.

As for the members of the reactionary classes and individual reactionaries, so long as they do not rebel, sabotage or create trouble after their political power has been overthrown, land and work will be given to them as well in order to allow them to live and remould themselves through labour into new people. If they are not willing to work, the people’s state will compel them to work. Propaganda and educational work will be done among them too and will be done, moreover, with as much care and thoroughness as among the captured army officers in the past. This, too, may be called a “policy of benevolence” if you like, but it is imposed by us on the members of the enemy classes and cannot be mentioned in the same breath with the work of self-education which we carry on within the ranks of the revolutionary people.

These quotes from Mao are quite fascinating since he is very explicitly that you are free to do anything you want as long as you don’t engage in any reactionary behavior. Unsurprisingly he regarded any dissent as reactionary.

Interesting to compare this to Mill’s beliefs about barbarians and Quillette’s desire no to be seen are far-right kooks.

    • Brochettaward

It is typical Marxist double-speak as I see it not really needing too much analysis. You are free to do what you want except the million things you can’t do. And there’s a shit ton of gray area in what could be labeled as “reactionary.” Slap democratic before the word dictatorship and it’s transformed. It’s gibberish where you can basically assume the worst possible interpretation of the titles and phrases is true.

    • Tres Cool

But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You know you aint gonna make it with anyone anyhow.

Had a talk with someone about homelessness the other day and I had tired of their bullshit and asked them somewhat abruptly if they really thought that people not living in homes was the real problem. The seemed perplexed at the question so I layed it out that they are talking about homelessness like that is the problem and I said it’s a symptom of a deeper problem like drug addiction or mental issues and putting those people in homes doesn’t fix shit and may actually make it harder for someone else trying to genuinely lift themselves out of poverty. I then asked them if they really thought putting a crackhead in a home was going to make him stop smoking crack and turn into a good citizen and fix his water heater and mow the lawn. They seemed like they had never thought of it that way and I may have made a convert, or at least got them to question the bullshit narrative a little harder. At the very least, I know they’ll never talk about the homeless to me again.

Took my aunt to the ER yesterday for back pain. Right off the bat, the doc said, “I can’t give you more than 10 hydrocodone. The government won’t let me.”

Mind you, she had not asked for pain medicine, and in fact told them that hydrocodone makes her nauseated. But that’s what he led with.

I said, “Damn that war on drugs.”

My aunt, who is not necessarily politically savvy, although she is on the very conservative side, said, “Yep.”

    • DEG

      Sorry.

I second “Damn that war on drugs.”

      • Mojeaux, XX

I thought it was interesting he led off with “the government won’t let me.” I would like to think I detected a bit of bitterness in that shade.

      • Tres Cool

When Mama Tres was seriously in pain with pancreatic cancer, she was given a whole buffet of pain pills to choose from, which she usually teetotalled as “they make me feel drunk and I dont like that.”
Me: “mom, everyone in the familiy aspires to that, hell- we work 40 hours to have a paycheck to let us buy stuff that gets us drunk. And here you are, sitting on Mt. Contin”

I honestly hope that everyone in the CDC, DEA, House, Senate, or any elected official that passed these draconian laws on withholding pain medicine dies a slow, agonizing, death. Ideally from pancreatic cancer.

Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,

        And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
        The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!

        He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?

The Interstate 95 overpass in North Philadelphia that was destroyed by a tanker truck fire on June 11 is scheduled to reopen on a temporary structure built less than two weeks after the incident that severed one of the nation’s busiest highways.

The almost unbelievably fast temporary structure construction started less than a week ago, when truckloads of recycled glass aggregate were transported to the site starting last Thursday to support a temporary roadway from a Delaware River plant south of Philadelphia.

I was not expecting this. I hope it works out better than Operation Warp Speed.
