SCOTUS RULES RACE-BASED COLLEGE ADMISSIONS UNCONSTITUTIONAL: Another good ruling from the current SCOTUS. Not that this will change anything. Universities announced weeks ago that they are already planning end-runs around this ruling. So, just like Bruen, it will be a moral victory, and the SOBs will keep doing the same things.

DUNE SHACK, BABY, DUNE SHACK: Park Service evicts Provincetown artist from “dune shack” after 80 years. Provincetown leaders worry the character of the shacks will be diminished if they are leased only to wealthy, high bidders. LOL. But did he sing sea chanteys [NSFW lyrics and drunken hooliganism] in his seaside shanty?

CITY USES FEDERAL COVID RELIEF FUNDS FOR GUN BUYBACK PROGRAM: “A gun buyback program is not going to change much,” VCU professor and law enforcement expert William Pelfrey said. “The people who bring guns in are not likely to be people who are criminals. The guns that come off the street are not likely to be used in a major crime event.” Yet later in the article Pelfrey pulls out the old, tired “if it saves even one life” trope. What if the life saved is that of a home invader, professor?

FINLAND MAN: On March 18, 1944, 27-year-old Aimo Koivunen and his Finnish ski unit were in Lapland, Finland’s northernmost region, when they were attacked by superior Soviet forces. Forced to retreat through deep snow, Koivunen found himself exhausted. He remembered he had a supply of Pervitin, an early form of crystal meth used in World War 2… We have questions about the “crystal” part, and about war propaganda in general, but still.

SPACEX DECIDES TO HOT-STAGE STARSHIP: And what is hot-staging you ask? Is it what aerospace engineers call a dutch oven? No, it’s when you ignite the second stage engines before the second stage separates from the first stage. The Russians have been doing it for years.

MARS SAMPLE RETRIEVAL MISSION COSTS SKYROCKET: In a June 26 statement to SpaceNews, NASA said that one “highly speculative” estimate for the full cost of MSR was in the range of $8 billion to $9 billion. An independent review in 2020 estimated the cost of MSR at $3.8 billion to $4.4 billion, which itself was a significant increase over earlier estimates. The MSR mission was originally supposed to use an ESA-supplied rover to collect the samples, but NASA decided last summer to go with helicopter retrieval.

During an April 4 event at Harvard, panelists floated ideas like using geography as a proxy for race due to “segregation of cities” and schools, but rejected ideas of preferring low income students because only half of Americans in poverty are African American, meaning it “does not correspond perfectly in any way to race.”

    Poor people at Harvard? Gross.

On the topic of SOBs likely ignoring this — I think this is wishful thinking.

I mean we live in a country with the 14th and the Civil Rights Act and all… and somehow also the “Thou Shalt Enforce Quotas on Your Corporate Boards” and other crap states pull and seem to get away with… so ignoring the Nazgul seems the most likely.

We’ll see what happens. There probably will be lawsuits. And I have a feeling that having to do it all subtly and quietly will take all the fun out of it, when the real reason for having these policies is to be able to brag loudly about having these policies.

OT – Carrying over the Fallout conversation from the lunch thread.

Nephilium on June 29, 2023 at 2:58 pm

There’s several early hints and conversations that guide you towards the settlement first to follow leads on the man in the suit, which introduces you to the Legion, and provides several stronger weapons, armor, and companions that allow you to start building up your character to the smooth talking death dealing courier that doesn’t worry about deathclaws, super mutants, raiders, armies, or brains in jars.

    UnCivilServant
UnCivilServant on June 29, 2023 at 3:12 pm

I didn’t give a rat’s rear end about the guy in the suit.

Everyone tries to kill me, it’s not worth holding a grudge.

…that doesn’t worry about deathclaws, super mutants, raiders, armies, or brains in jars.

    I notice you didn’t mention the Cazadors…

And missing hints early on in games is something I do spectacularly well. Out of Vault 101 I turned left and didn’t find Megaton for more than an hour… (most of that spent crawling from overencumbrance because I couldn’t find a vendor)

    • Ownbestenemy

Yeah I am pretty sure the good people of Goodsprings pretty much tell you to go to Sloan and then Primm to help find a new sheriff and from there it takes you up Mountain Pass and then onto Novak…or be ungovernable and just do what you want.

      • UnCivilServant

I honestly don’t recall any conversations pointing to Sloan. In fact, I don’t recall any ‘you should go to X’ conversations in Goodsprings at all.

      • Ownbestenemy

Maybe not Sloan, that is just the shack at the end of the road out of GS…So Primm is where they tell you to go to find one, who them makes you run around that part of the map to get things done.

    • SDF-7

Early hints? I think it is a bit stronger than that… “Benny went to Vegas”

“Road north to Vegas blocked by Deathclaws”

“Try walking around? Cazadors… or lots of giant radscorps… or deathclaws (if you manage to find Primm Pass)”

You’re very much steered to go south and either you’ll swing over towards Nipton yourself or Ranger Ghost will put you that way when you hit the map wall. I don’t think it is at all subtle.

That said — some gifted loons are actually able to dodge the Deathclaws and get straight to the Strip for speedruns — but the game design intent is clear.

      • UnCivilServant

I didn’t quote my original comment where that intent made me feel like I was railroaded and exploration was being punished, which resulted in me sticking to the visible quest rails and not seeing the game the fans rave about.

      • UnCivilServant

UnCivilServant on June 29, 2023 at 1:43 pm

I think I’ve figured out why I don’t rate New Vegas as highly as other people do.

It was all a bad first impression. First objective outside the tutorial area – go North to New Vegas. Heads north – finds Deathclaws. Tries to veer around Deathclaws – finds Cazadors. Tries to cross mountains to shorten bypass – finds invisible walls. Apparently ‘go north to new vegas’ was really ‘go south’. By the time I reached Novac, I felt railroaded. The game never overcame this bad impression of trying to force linearity on what was supposed to be an open world.

        UnCivilServant
UnCivilServant on June 29, 2023 at 2:43 pm

Musing more on my commute, I realize that this first impression got reinforced whenever I’d wander off the beaten path and without fail immediately get set upon by Cazadors, or the occassional albino radscorpion for variety. The message it hammered home was that exploration was to be punished and you’d better stay on the quest rails – which is exactly the opposite of how people who love it describe New Vegas. So much so that I wonder if we played the same game. Evidently my playthrough missed half or more of the content and all but two of the companions. Maybe they started by going south instead?

      • Ownbestenemy

Really just missed the very first part cause once you get to the Motel with the Dino, you can then start going nearly everywhere (and make that sweet dart gun that takes down Deathclaws).

      • UnCivilServant

That’s Novac ( the surviving part of the “No Vacancy” sign) I’d already been convinced of the futility of wandering of the trail by the time I finally slogged into that town.

      • SDF-7

So really it is that the Tutorial / Hand holding section was just a bit too long for you (see below in that I think Novac is where they take the training wheels off).

Didn’t think about it… but that’s also where you get your first companion (well, other than ED-E if you have sufficient points in Repair, I suppose…) Extra evidence to my theory.

      • UnCivilServant

In my view, the end of the tutorial was when I walked out of the doctor’s house.

And ED-E was one of two companions I actually found. I stumbled onto Veronica but she got too annoying.

Honestly, I don’t use companions much, since they tend to just block line of fire and ruin stealth attempts.

      • Ownbestenemy

I can see that. Id say the battle with the gang should have been. I see no problem in guiding through some of the first part through and there are clear signs of areas you shouldn’t go yet…like with the Cazadors right outside of GS. The robot will come and stop you. Signs up about Deathclaws as you approach Sloan proper.

I think the basis of many views on its greatness come down to the storyline and the moral choices you make. Actual RPG elements in the game and outside of the whole vault dweller setting.

      • UnCivilServant

If this were after my first playthorugh, my reaction would be “What Robot?” That was another character I missed in that run. (I’ve since met him).

I can see the arguments in its favor, but one of my favorite things in a video game is to see what’s over the next hill, so running into a constant spate of “Don’t go there” signs (some quite literal) didn’t help the first impressions.

I suppose this has all been a long winded rant about the method of encouraging a specific direction.

      • Nephilium

For comparison, in both FO1 and FO2, if you tried to go in certain directions, you would start running into enemies that would curb stomp you as well. Sometimes in such a way that there was no way to run away from the tactical map before a total party wipe. The Fallout world is supposed to be a dangerous one, so it makes sense to stick to the roads/paths until you’ve geared/leveled up.

      • UnCivilServant

So what you’re saying is you’ve got stockholm syndrome?

      • SDF-7

Yeah — I can definitely see your point. I really view everything up to Novac as the Tutorial as it were. Once you’re in Novac, you can either start focusing on side quests (Fly Me To The Moon is obviously for that, you don’t have to do it as it is really really easy to get the info from Manny anyway) — but the rep increase in Novac, getting Boone figured out if you want, etc. setting you up with a hotel room / base there sets you up to really start exploring around… And most of the area around Novac is reasonably scaled (unless you try to push back up to Primm Pass and hit Deathclaws, of course).

Or you stay on the Main Quest and get distracted by the solar plant.

Or you stay on the Main Quest, ignore the solar plant and get distracted by Veronica.

Or you just stay on the Main Quest.

It really does open up a good bit around Novac, TL;DR.

    • PutridMeat

You can go north avoiding the stretch of deathclaws on the road, swing by the supermutant hut (forget his name – he’ll leave you alone), sneak through the mountains avoiding the bandits and get to vegas before 1st level up. If you boost your luck, you can gamble enough money to get into vegas, make a killing at all the casinos before they black list you, and get all the implants at the dr. office before hitting level 2. Unfortunately, I was so over powered at that point, in a Towlie adjacent move, I sort of got bored and wandered off…

    • R C Dean

It’s been years, but I vaguely recall the “go to Vegas” thing, and thinking “Fuck that, this is an open world, Ima wander randomly for a bit. Besides, I gotta find somebody to buy all this cheap crap I picked up.”

    Militant furries.

The self-described “gay furries” in the hacking group known as SiegedSec have expanded their campaign against five states for their stances on transgender issues.

The group, which earlier this month leaked data from the Texas city of Forth Worth, claimed on Wednesday that it had breached government websites belonging to the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and once again Texas.

In an announcement on the breaches, which encourages readers to “be gay do crime,” SiegedSec says it targeted the Nebraska Supreme Court Intranet, the website for the South Dakota Boards and Commissions, personal information from the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council, Pennsylvania’s Provider Self-Service website, as well as the website for the South Carolina Criminal Justice Information Services.

“We have proudly defaced the South Dakota Boards and Commissions website! We left little special messages across their site,” the group wrote. “Unfortunately, they have now fixed the defacement. Since it seems South Dakota didn’t appreciate our gift, we will offer gifts to someone else. • SDF-7

“To protect and to serve….. PSYCH!”

The whole “no duty to protect” argument is (to me) like saying a soldier has no duty to engage the enemy in wartime. It is kind of the damned job description there, jack.

      • R C Dean

It’s really not their job to protect ordinary people. Their job is to gather evidence for prosecutors, serve arrest and search warrants, shake down the citizenry for traffic fines and the like. You know, do what they’re told by their bosses. They work for the state, not for you.

Peterson could have received nearly 100 years in prison, although a sentence even approaching that length would have been highly unlikely given the circumstances and his clean record. He also could have lost his $104,000 annual pension.

The jury’s decision was the correct one under current law. But I wouldn’t have minded some kind of finding (I know, not possible) that cleared the coward Peterson of criminal liability while stripping the coward Peterson of his six-figure pension because of his cowardice.

      • R C Dean

Christ on a cracker, that also is collecting a pension that is nearly twice the median family income?

Evan is not in trouble, but thick depression is not fun. No epileptic shit at all, and I strongly suspect that’s a part of it. Higher doses of meds have killed most emotion. But no tremors. So juggle a shotput and a penny. Hard to determine what side of the coin I prefer.

“Vomit worth $250K discovered inside whale’s colon

The whale died after the nearly 20-pound chunk of the substance, known as ambergris, caused chronic obstructive inflammation in the animal’s colon, according to experts at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

They told Jam Press that the obstruction was 33 feet long and nearly 2 feet in diameter.

Ambergris, a coveted substance sought by perfume companies to make the scent of their products last longer, is secreted from the animal’s bile duct in the intestines.”

      • UnCivilServant

Normally, whales vomit up ambergris and it floats ashore. So most people regard it as being whale vomit. The problem is this particular batch was never vomit.

The trade group representing nearly all major automakers offered its harshest criticism of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s aggressive proposal to sharply cut vehicle emissions through 2032 saying it is “neither reasonable nor achievable.”

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota Motor and others, called the proposal a “de facto battery electric vehicle mandate.”

The EPA proposed in April cutting vehicle emissions by 56% over 2026 levels, forecasting that would result in 60% of new vehicles by 2030 being electric and 67% by 2032. “EPA’s standards cannot be met without substantially increasing the cost of all vehicles, reducing consumer choice and disadvantaging major portions of the U.S. population and territory,” the group said. That is precisely their plan. Make cars too expensive for most people, to drive them onto public transit and into the urban areas where it can at least pretend to work.

      • R.J.

Elizabeth Saewyc, executive director of the University of British Columbia Stigma and Resilience Among Vulnerable Youth Centre, said a review of research found most 2STNBGD young people face frequent misgendering, long delays in care, lack of access to knowledgeable providers, greater exposure to violence in communities and worse health outcomes than their peers….

Charlesworth’s report makes eight recommendations, including enhancing legislative protections for 2STNBGD children and youth and ensuring that Ministry of Children and Family Development staff can provide gender-affirming care to 2STNBGD children and their families.”

A proposal to TPTB here at Glib Central: We have lots and lots of excellent articles in the archives that are being lost to time. In addition, we sometimes have a dearth of articles in the present. I propose that we have reprints of some past articles (starting from the very beginning) that are still relevant and/or heart-rending, e.g., Agent Sloper’s article, Subaru Horror Theater with the dog, stuff that can bear to be repeated (ad nauseam).

I’m sure we get lurkers here all the time who haven’t seen these and some of the articles are tucked away in the archive where they might not know to look.

    • Tundra

Subaru Horror Theater with the dog,

Fuck no. I racked up a ton in therapy bills after that one.

      Kidding. Great idea.

  26. KSuellington

What a great SC decision and one that will hopefully set the stage for a hard smack down of any reparations bullshit and help bring about the end of race based hiring and admissions. I think it will be much more than a mere moral victory. If Harvard and other elite schools want to ditch testing that will be their undoing. They can go right ahead and degrade the value of their degrees all they want. They can also go right ahead and try to continue racial preferences through reading into applicants’ personal essays. If my kids are applying to universities in another 7-10 years and this race preference shit is still going on they will be strongly encouraged to include a few words about how they have had to overcome historical hardships based on their race. They just don’t have to mention the specifics that the race is question happens to be Irish.

    • rhywun

If anything, we’ll find out how actually important the virtue signaling is to them. Will it be important enough to trash your standards and reputation?

      • KSuellington

Exactly. Let’s see them put their reputations on the line. I’ve been praying for a college bubble burst for a while. Especially the Ivies and the West Coast Ivy. I’d really love for legislation that got passed passing back the college debt onto the colleges that gave the worthless degrees in the first place. That would be sweet indeed.
