I’m not quite up against the deadline like last week but I’m still running late, which is why there is an apostrophe in the middle of this puzzle. I usually remove all punctuation as that seems standard for acrostics, but I missed that one and didn’t notice until all the work was done and I’m too lazy to fix it. So there’s a little help for you solvers, your welcome. Bookwise – I’ve mentioned before that Joe R Lansdale, of the Hap and Leonard series and Bubba Ho-Tep fame, Is one of my favorite authors. He writes in many genres and I’ve liked just about everything I’ve gotten a hold of, up until I read The Drive-In. I gather it’s a cult classic among his fans and many consider it his best work, I just didn’t get it. So Glibbies, has one of your favorite author’s ever treated you like the proverbial Browns fan? Work this glibcrostic and then let us know in the comments, or not…you know the drill.

Reminder: The last Sunday of each month is “What Are We Reading” Day so if you want to participate get your reports in to HeyBuddyStopDoingThat@protonmail.com by the second to last Sunday.
The temperature is too damn high!
Yeah, the Drive In is… weird. And not one of my favorites. I bet that RJ would love it though.
Anyway, the weeks question was has an author let you down, and the is yes, James Ellroy’s new LA quartet, taking place during WWII, is just not good. He needed an editor bad, but he is such a best seller that he falls into the same catagory as Stephen King, no one is going to be able to say no to his genius. Which sucks, as there is a good story in there, but he wants to put too many call backs, recons and other shit in them. Oh, well.
Reading Clark Ashton Smiths short stories right now, as a prelude to finishing Wool. Which is OK, better than a lot of stuff out there, but could have been stripped down a bit. Also, I have Solzenitsyn’s 1914, on deck, as that will probably be next. Unless I stumble into something.
I need my own drive in.
Yes you do.
I’d drive to Texas to attend. As long as I got some comped popcorn or something.
SRD — Last Chronicles. Nuff said.
I’ll workthe puzzle after I finish watching F1. All I can think watching it is “All the Chrome ads…. for a ‘free’ browser. You’d think people would realize they’re being packaged. “.
Done. Glad to say I didn’t have to say Clue X. Thanks, Hype. Didn’t time it…

Nice head fake with the broken solution link. ;p
Oops, I guess you’ll have to go the online version and hit reveal puzzle.
I haven’t hit it yet, but based on the results so far, some cheatin’ may be in order.
Crazy amounts of rain today. Driving through flooded roads is fun!
The plants are drowning though…
Trying to make my July Envy Month since we moved on from Pride, hmm? (Definitely settling into the very boring “sunny and hot” phase of the year here… I miss afternoon thunderstorms from the Southeast…)
Summer started here right after winter, no spring. May-June hot, July back to the old June, temps in the 70s, dry, dry, dry. Garden looks good, irrigation, eating cukes, cabbage, broccoli, and zucchini. Picking cherry tomatoes tomorrow for the first time. Radishes and pak choi are over for the year.
The opposite here, but you’re closer to Canada. We got their winter. It was another wet cool spring, and then July 1st it became summer. I’m hunkered down in the AC. It’s 98 outside.
Ok… which one of y’all did the meme pic at the top of this? I laughed….
Not cool, SDF. Not. Cool.
Lol.
That’s pretty good.
There’s a bunch of good ones in there.

Surely that must be a Minneapolis thing.
Things have gone sideways and there is virtually no corporate media coverage. It makes me so fucking angry.
It confuses the locals into believing it’s a gang war and they bring out their own fire power.
Floyd George 2.0 starts all over again
I hope you’re joking. It can’t be that bad?
Every locality around here has its usual shows, plus the zillions of home-grown ones.

One of my favorite (romance) authors is Susan Elizabeth Phillips. She’s disappointed me many times after the first few. I’d finish one I’d been looking forward to and go, “She wrote that same book last year. And the year before. And the year before that. I r disappoint.” So finally, I stopped reading her new work.
Heh… David Weber literally cut and pasted an entire (long) chapter from one book into one of the later Honor books. His fans were not amused or impressed.
On purpose?!
I’ve seen paragraphs cut and pasted a few pages later but I’m guessing that was just shitty editing.
But yeah… I tried to like Safehold but it just went on and on without going anywhere I had to give up. Plus I’m probably not as interested in ships and warfare as he is.
GA (state, not country) politician forgetting you’re supposed to use civil forfeiture or eminent domain to steal. Sounds like a real peach.
Lol, I’ve been in Atlanta more or less since ’87 and never realized there was a City of South Fulton. It’s basically made up and is the south end of Fulton County minus a couple of actual ‘burb towns.
I had to look that up. You’re right, “incorporated in 2017” lol and apparently from all the leftover land that wasn’t already incorporated. Weird.
Back in the 90s there was a spate of incorporation and annexation. Atlanta was losing their tax base to areas north at an accelerating pace, with only 400k mpstly poor residents or so in a city of 4 million. The surrounding areas watched them grabbing up rich areas to the north and began forming cities or jointing existing towns. Sandy Springs (formerly unincorporated sandy springs) was one of the last and most controversial, as it cut off the city of Atlanta from any northern growth. Atlanta basically was girdles.
My assumption is that this area of South Fulton is doing the same thing. Probably areas to the south were eyeing making them join their cities via annexation, and the residents eyeballed the expense and services and decided to make their own.
In Atlanta services were a big issue. Areas like Sandy Springs had private garbage service where the garbage would be picked up from the back or side yard. With mandatory Atlanta service they would have to bring garbage to the curb, have less frequent pickups, and spend more for the privilege.
Something similar might be at play.
Follow the $$$.
I’m used to New York where incorporations are mostly frozen since the early 20th century with minor exceptions here and there and most of those are dissolutions because of the depopulation upstate.
If you want to be cynical, it’s so he is less likely to be convicted. If they simply did criminal trespass I’d whatever state variety that would likely be a conviction.
Naturally, the article I read earlier made no mention of the “do you know who I am” response. My skim of this post doesn’t note he was held at gun point. Which means I can spin that response multiple ways.
One of my favorite writers, Jodi Taylor, has several ongoing series. I held back from starting one “spin-off” series because the ostensible protagonists (based on the titles) are considered “bad guys” (not the worst of the various villains, but certainly disliked) by the protagonists of my favorite series. Once I overcame my reluctance and started the spin-offs, I was pleasantly surprised and read all the books available in short order. Taylor has one book, however – her attempt at a “Regency Romance” – that I found kinda meh. She’s never followed up with another to make it into a series, and of all her books, it’s the one I’m not eager for her to continue into sequels.
More Qanon?
What the fuck is going on?
I thought that was going to be another movie review.
No need.
Real life keeps outpacing the movie.
That would be “Qanon adjacent”
surprise, SURPRISE,, SURPRISE!
I could probably type out a rant about the breakdown in morality and the culture of selfishness that’s taken hold as a result… but honestly, it would be too preachy. So that’s my summary of my opinion… Oh, and probably a sprinkling of “Because we don’t think anyone’s going to enforce the law / society / basic civilization” as well. Yay.
We’ll be the judges of too preachy! Rant and submit!
18 year old kids for the first time on their own and in uniform are targets of this shit. Doesn’t make it right but cartel and traffickers look for low hanging fruit.
What the fuck is going on?
We’ll never find out from that story.
Did you watch the video?
We are just going to have to go back to believing our own eyes and the accounts of our immediate acquaintances and friends whom we really trust.
Everything else is bullshit.
But then you get into this sort of philosophical issue too…
I love that line.
Book wise, I’ve been reading this:
God’s Battalions: The Case for the Crusades
It’s interesting as I’ve only ever hear the case against. Also I’ve never really read much on the Crusades in general. I’ll have more for WAWR.
Vlad Tepes recognized the danger of the Ottomans and kept them out of western Europe.
The Crusades were a counter offensive against the Muslim invaders who displaced Christianity. The initial Crusades were perfectly acceptable. Later they turned into grift circuses extraordinaire. I never understood the modern argument that because one arab group of Muslims took the land from another group of Arabs with a decent percentage of Europeans/Byzantine presence the Muslim victory was sacrosanct. The hard corps Muslims still say that the Iberian Penn, the Balkans, Sicily, and parts of Hungary etc. are still properly Muslim lands that it is the duty of the faithful to expel the Kaffir. But why would a member of western civilization say the same?
properly
those who say Iberia is Muslim turf: by their logic who properly “owns” the West Bank ?
of course, how can any group that consolidated as late as the 7th century have a historic claim to anything?
I of course write from land that rightfully belonged to the Chickasaw, but I bought it from Ben and Jerry
You should feel guilty for living on it – that’s all that matters.
“We live on land stolen from the dinosaurs…”
“Tasty, tasty dinosaurs….”
I had dinosaur for dinner tonight.
Platypus?
Dinosaur goes well with the Caesar salad I’m having later.
I had stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon. Quite hot for jalapeños. Delightful. No lizard meat. Just cow.
It is very convenient for modern westerners to be almost completely ignorant of their own history, isn’t it?
I’d never heard the Crusades described as anything other than how horrible Europeans are until encountering more details outside mainstream sources.
An interesting part I just finished was the debunking of the “Islam was so far ahead of the West” tropes. Same with the Dark Ages. As always, there is much more nuance.

2 yds of bark dust spread this weekend. Probably got another 2-3 to do next weekend. Grocery getter is doing its job well.
forest products are fun in a way that few other industries are: more self-made men, lots of local autonomy, handshakes from men who pay in full up front, the smell of sawdust with bits of woodsmoke
when I compare this to having a million pounds of acetone under my desk, it’s much more comfortable
oh: and driving around in the country
Hello:
The Small Hold that is our “farm” has to move.
The 80 acres next to us sold and is being “re-plotted” to make 5 ish acre home sites. The fence they have will allow animals to kill our sheep & chickens. People who buy 250K home lots generally have deep pockets and no idea of how the country truly is.
they edited out our sheep and tractor but you can see our house here.

So we are scrambling/purging/packing/storing with gusto. (and sobbing).
Police were here for my wife’s public nudity protests. Even though she asked after they greeted her toplessness, they did not arrest her.
Only reason why i am telling you this, is that if anybody wants raw wool (worthless) and they are on I-35 passing through, let me know.
Hope you are all well, and i do wonder what the glib positron would be on this farm/housing enchrochmeant.
Developer did do us dirty, and the city does not like him.
R
RD
Just as an FYI, a stockade fence that would protect us from the common property line would run more than 1600 linear feet and would cost 70K or more.
This is terrible news
Depending on the local laws, this could be an avenue
Being rural, they may not be as convoluted, but a friend of mine bought a lot in West Palm Beach and his neighbor directly behind caused him no end of trouble. They didn’t want him to be able to put on a second floor, and if he did, they wanted no windows allowed. He had to build a really high privacy wall and plant a bunch of plants for that. They didn’t want anyone to be able to see in their yard in a dense older neighborhood. (Less than 1/4 acre lots)
They fought against his generator installation, seemingly out of spite.
In all, it was 2 years of litigation before they got it cleared up.
I’m so sorry, ‘bodru.
FirstWife inherited considerable shares in Anadarko. Her great-grandfather had held them from the firm’s inception.
Are you saying that you benefited greatly from someone else’s fence that is now gone? I’m trying to follow.
He’s saying the adjacent farm which shared a common border is now being split up into residences. Where a fence was not necessary before, become necessary now.
My back yard butts up to a corn field. There is no fence. None is needed. If that corn field was rezoned into residential lots, a fence would become necessary. We only have 300 feet adjacent to the corn field, but it would be a substantial burden to put in a fence.
No, it means they’ll build a worthless fence that will not keep predators out.
The neighbor was partially retired, at one point just kept horses out there, then did hay for two years. Grand daughter got allergic to log cabin, he moved out and sold it.

Sad to hear your story. Moving farther away to another more rural area would be the solution but too often that’s not feasible either. Get a couple mules, they will HEE-HAW at odd times and scare any prospective buyers away.
Are the new 5 acre plots incorporated into a town or rezoned rural small plots?. How far from a city/town? Water/sewer?
I have an 8 acre piece adjoining a small river available, heavily wooded but comes with mosquitoes in the summer and lots of snow in the winter.
Problem is you’d have me for a neighbor.
The city approved the development, should have paid attention, and should have looked out for current residents. Is there a lot of “harrumphing” going on?
A small town near here zoned 5 acre lots, then they decided a sewer system should be provided and discovered that the cost of running the lines between 5 acre houses would be prohibitive and decided not to have a village sewer system.
Surprised they didn’t just enact a city sales tax to pay for it. It’s all the rage!
I’m a city boy so not too familiar with country ways but yeah – sewers seem out of reach in a neighborhood of 5 acre lots.
My mom and stepdad retired to a country lot – no idea of the acreage… it was narrow but went back quite far into woods where I used to like to sneak a cigarette in…. but yeah no sewers there.
Watching Jeremy Clarkson’s farm I learned that today, wool is a byproduct of sheep shearing and sells for a fraction of the cost of shearing the sheep… like a buck fifty per sheep, IIR.
Hard to imagine.
Better than paying for disposal. And raw wool requires a fuckton of processing to make it usable.
OMG.
We have some libertarian absolutists here on real estate, but I’m a bit more nuanced and very sympathetic. I’ve gone through this on two different properties.
I guess my question would be did they need a variance or some kind of government waiver to do it? Depending on where and how sometimes it is little but a rubber stamp to do.
Regardless, I’m sorry for you and your family.
I’m confused, that looks wide open. What’s stopping animals from killing your sheep and chickens now? and how would putting houses on that land make it worse?
yes: I didn’t mean to be obtuse, but I was imagining some satisfactory situation that was removed
I know a donkey or two will watch the sheep, but this part of the world hasn’t been safe for chickens since coyotes got across the Mississippi
The chickens are in a 100×50 8 foot tall chain link run that i built. (first time i tried, a few errors). It has netting on the top.
I have still lost chickens, one got in the main coop last year and killed 20 ish.
My sheep are in two rather large runs that have field fencing and barbed wire on the bottom.
However the sheep are escape artists. Its been 48 hours since one got out.
I don’t know if I told you, about a month ago, two dogs from a neighbor (1.5 miles away) got loose, and killed one of my sheep.
She was the one that was bottle fed in this very room.
The owner did pay for killing the sheep….
I don’t want to have to go through that again, nor kill a neighbors dog harassing my sheep.
OMG 😢
It got worse.
She had a baby, we call her “baby-baby” she was crying for her moma for days. She was young, and did not take to the bottle.
She did ok, and is still alive. But I do get the concept of emotional damages a little bit better.
What some people get is that in this state, its legal to shoot animals who threaten livestock.
So when a lawyer who pays $250K for the lots, looses their pet sues us its going to start a huge cluster. Ultimately that’s why we have to move.
Clearly the answer is to shoot the lawyers and their real estate developer, since they’re the animals threatening the livestock.

I’m real sorry to read this. I can’t imagine how heart broken we’d be if they developed the land next our little piece of paradise. Fingers crossed that this turns into a great opportunity for you to find something even better!
Thank you. Its kinda scary, need to plan simultaneous moves for livestock.
Yeah, livestock makes it orders of magnitude more stressful.
“great opportunity” was a poor choice of words. Hang in there and I’m wishing for a happy outcome is what I was trying to get across.
No problem, i am trying to spin this into something positive.
More land further out in the country, less house maybe.
I’ve been arrested multiple times when conducting my Free The First protests.
Walking around waving your dick is not a protest.
Do not tell me how to Free Speech, sir.

Sell your place to a tire recycler.
I had to leave my home in Montana because some sort of ugly confrontation with a group of neighbors was becoming inevitable. Latecomers, for the most part, who were Hell bent on turning the area into something completely different from what it was when I got there. They wanted the Lincoln Log mansion crowd , not some bozo who just wanted peace and quiet and a bumpy dusty private road to keep the riffraff away. At least I made significant profit when I cashed out.
And- 80 acres next to us sold and is being “re-plotted” to make 5 ish acre home sites
Property tax bonanza.
I wonder what would happen to that plan if there happened to be a “correction” in the housing market soon.
All natural free range wool should be worth a fortune to Patagonia.

WTF is going on here?
I’ve never seen a VAR check so long after the supposed incident. Is there no statute of limitations here?
I have no idea what kind of reffing is going on here.

So, the football coach at Northwestern is in hot water for hazing occurring on the team. I normally scoff at this sort of thing, but given the nature of the hazing…
It involved players, upperclassmen, dry humping younger players in a dark locker room. They called it “running “I don’t know who came up with that, but I think it was someone who was into it for reasons beyond correcting the mistakes of younger players made in practice.
The head coach received a two week suspension for this which the prresident of the university is currently reconsidering.
And it gets GAYER
Every single instance of “hazing” I’ve ever read about has been disgusting and beyond the pale.
My understanding is that it is supposed to build “cohesion” or some shit but… I played sports in HS and there was nothing like this. The seniors didn’t even try to play-fuck me. And yet we were pretty successful. Hazing is completely unnecessary.
It serves no purpose. Shit got under my skin in the Army and it’s always the worst sort of clowns who get off on it.
So much this. If someone acted that way towards me, the last thing it would build is cohesion.
Rumor has it that the entire British empire was built on hazing.
I think they called it fagging.
I believe it
Hazing as stupid shit is unnecessary, but there is value in initiation rites, building camaraderie, and separating in group from out group.
I taught for a while at a private college that had a really strict, student-enforced honor code. Freshmen were brought into the honor code during an evening ceremony at the on-campus chapel. There was a little “secret society” initiation vibe. But no hazing and it seemed to be effective – the kind of thing I think you’re pointing to.
I can see where you go into a situation (sports, military), where you’re expecting a bit of ribbing and end up with gross hazing, you’re going to be frozen into inaction for a while. However, if you know, going into a frat/sorority, that you are going to be horribly hazed, why do you still want to join up?
A guy placing his ballsack on your face is a small price to pay to some in order to build connections you will carry with you the rest of your life. Some people are also just stupid herd animals who will do whatever the group tells them to do.
In my yute, I went to church girls’ camp every summer. It was our version of Scout camp. Starting fires, tying knots, cooking on rocket stoves, etc. The first year I went (I was 13? I think?), there was some hazing. I found it utterly tasteless and I simply refused to participate either as victim or perpetrator. It put me in such a bad (read: bitchy) mood, my mood seeped through the camp until there was no fun in it for anyone. (I’m told my hateful glare is truly hateful.) As long as I went to girls’ camp after that, there was no hazing because I made it unfun.
Good for you.
I went to a “day camp” one year. I liked the programming – archery, boondoggle, all kinds of shit.
The peer boys were… monstrous. I must have expressed same to my mom because I didn’t do day camp after that.
I should add that… “monstrous” was likely the default for boys in that time and place.
I was not a default boy for that time and place.
Well, honestly, it’s just not my nature to do shit I don’t wanna do, so it wasn’t so much me making a stand. It was me going, “Fuck off, slaver” as a conditioned reflex.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
One of these days I’m going to do that to you and then will finally be accepted as a Firster.

Mornin’, and thanks!
Implantation went about as well as can be expected. The post-surgical instructions were a hoot. “You may experience random bleeding.” WTF? So I might start bleeding out of my navel for no apparent reason? On the plus side, percocet (which I needed for a day, the leftovers will be stashed for future emergencies such as my random periodic kidney stones). I get to have that since I am on blood thinners and ibuprofen is not recommended.
Mmmmm, percs-work great and lay you on an addictive puffy cloud but they make me swell up like the girl from Willy Wonka that ate the blueberry thingy.
