¡Martes por la tarde, enlaces mexicanos!

I’m waiting patiently for a batch of training records from a contractor.  I hate this one, because its for cultural competency.  The trouble I have with it, is I have to review the training slides…for every contractor we have in 19 states.

So I am basically saying, is I have taken cultural competency training at least 1-2 times per week for the past 6 months when we added it to our FDR review.

Not to be outdone, we have enlaces!

Armed, masked men set fire to a market in Mexico.  Another Mexican journo found dead.  I might pay more attention to either story except…

*eye twitches*  This human interest piece of a Japanese man making tacos is triggering.  Maybe I’ll have sushi today.

No. Your flight to Mexico is not an allegory for wealth inequality.

Bolsonaro

Turns out Chevron is having the effect on the Venezuelan economy team Brandon intended.  They need Star Trek levels of intervention, because its still an epic shithole.

¡Más quatro años! ¡El Presidente Dudebro!

Lula accomplished two things:  halting economic expansion in the Amazon, and making it illegal for Bolsonaro to come back and change that until at least 2030.

I can’t remember if I posted this one or not, but it was on the radio this morning.  Have a great Tuesday!

I guess you have to ask, is that a grammar problem or a branding choice?

It’s OK to fall apart; tacos do and we love them.

I saw that on a church sign years ago and it made me smile. A very wry, Churchill smile.

This human interest piece of a Japanese man making tacos is triggering.

    Cultural appropriation is never okay.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

When done by non-whites it’s a beautiful example of cross pollination of diverse cultures leading to new ways of knowing, to new paradigms of decolonialism and uplifting bodies of many colors (except white). It’s a symbol of resistance to cisheteronormativity and predominant narratives.

When whites do it, it’s cultural appropriation and not ok.

      • slumbrew

        ^^^ this guy gets it

      • SDF-7

That’s one thing that actually bugs me these days — the widespread perception (at least that’s how it looks to me) in America that whites have no inherent culture. Everything was appropriated from someone else, where it sprang full formed from the forehead of Zeus (um… I suppose Amaterasu or something).

Which is obvious crap if you look back at Europe, which certainly has a whole slew of cultures. Is America a melting pot where people can pick and choose the best bits of the sub-cultures around them? Hell yes! Are the Caucasians the only ones doing it? No way…

      • Nephilium

It’s obvious crap if you consider things like tomato sauces, potatoes, peppers (spicy and not), and the like. All of those came from America.

      • UnCivilServant

I hate it when contestants on cooking shows from non-default american cuisine traditions make something from their cuisine they get praised for representing their roots, but the contestants from americana get accused of playing it safe when they do the same.

I want to see the ‘ethnic cuisine’ specialists go outside of their wheelhouse and cook something from a different tradition.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

When non-white cultures (for lack of a better term) adopt items from western cultures, it’s colonialism and it’s bad. When it goes the other way, it’s appropriation and it’s bad.

Joking aside, even from within a single source country for immigration there are different cultures. The book Albion’s Seed detailed four different cultures that came from England alone: the Puritans, the Quakers, the Cavaliers and the Scots-Irish. There certainly were other cultures, especially if you expand that to Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Cornwall. I can only imagine how many different cultures came from Germany since so many of the German immigrants arrived before Germany was united. If I wanted to be persnickety I’d say it’s racist to group all whites together as if it was a single culture.

      • rhywun

It’s more of a commandment than a perception.

Airline passengers as a group are the wealthier ones – wealthier than those who do not fly. Passengers flying in economy aren’t ‘the poor’.

Someone’s never flown on Spirit Airlines and it shows.

    • R.J.

Boy yeah. If it is in-country I far prefer to drive a luxurious SUV to my destination in comfort and privacy.

      • Bobarian LMD

        Allegiant said “hold mah beer”.

I’ve flown both and Spirit was a full notch above.

    • Ownbestenemy

Yeah for sure. Small hops in the 300nmi range are about $19 bucks if you just carry a backpack (cheaper than a bus ticket). You can’t go to the movies for less than that.

    • DrOtto

I am not poor and prefer to drive to any destination I can over flying. I get to leave on my schedule, have seating room to spare and multiple good eating options. Also, I can take as many bags as I damn well please. Having just taken a lengthy flight for a family vacation, my kids are now on board with this ideology as well. The wife will continue to complain no matter how we get there.

      • Tundra

I’d rather drive, too, but since I cover the entire country it’s just not practical. We do have an upcoming trip to WY which will be an actual road trip.

I can’t wait. Plenty of space, firearms and no fat people!

Both men appeared to be smiling and in good spirits as they ambled about the castle grounds, with Charles attempting to hurry Mr Biden along at one point as they reviewed the Guard of Honour.

Mr Biden, who was engaged in conversation with one of the soldiers he was reviewing, failed to heed the monarch’s polite suggestion to keep moving, with the King appearing to snap and gesture at the guard after the president moved along.

Although protocol states that the monarch is generally not to be touched, a Buckingham Palace source told People that Mr Biden did not breach protocol and said the King was “entirely comfortable” with the encounter.

“What a wonderful symbol of warmth and affection it was between both the individuals and their nations,” they said.

Come on, Chatty Cathy. Keep to the script.

Both men participated in what the White House described as a ”climate engagement” featuring His Majesty and a number of “philantrophists and investors,” including the chief executives of Bank of America, Prudential, and BlackRock, as well as US climate envoy John Kerry and Grant Shapps, the British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Mr Shapps told reporters that British officials are “enormously pleased” that the Inflation Reduction Act signed by Mr Biden last year “advanced clean energy goals”.

How lovely for them. I thought they were bitching about unfair subsidies in the Inflation Acceleration Act.

Despite suspending some fundamental rights for more than a year, the measures have been widely popular. Communities that lived under the constant extortion and violence of the gangs are returning to life.

But there have been thousands of complaints of rights violations, and observers say many young men appear to have been rounded up simply because of their appearance, or where they live.

Who knew that covering 80 percent of your body in gang tattoos would make you look like a criminal?

    Plans were made

In a new plan released Tuesday, Gupta’s office outlined several steps it plans to take to try to decrease the number of deaths from xylazine. Over the next 60 days, a group of federal agencies will add more details about how they’ll put the plan into action.

Increased research and data collection are a priority, Gupta said, “to see the full picture of this threat.”

    We need another model.

    • The Other Kevin

“Gupta said the government is also working on ways to stop online imports of xylazine and its ingredients from China and Mexico for street drugs, while making sure that veterinarians can still get the legal supplies that they need.”

So I’m guessing it’s not coming over the border, because if it were we wouldn’t be reading about it.

    • rhywun

Any of these eggheads asking themselves why the streets are littered with so many junkies in the first place?

After the historic collapse of the economy between 2014 and 2020 – which took 80% of GDP with it, as a result of a drastic drop in oil production – Venezuela is desperately looking for space to expand. However, at the moment, these great expectations seem condemned to being trapped by a ceiling: the country’s political crisis.

Like many anglers, I’ve always been keen to test my mettle against payara (for those of you who are averse to link-clicking, think of a salmon crossed with a sabre-toothed tiger). Oh, gawd, it was too much. I can abide bad x-rated talk from someone sexy, but this just would not do. Unfortunately, Ralph was much less understanding than Dave. When I tried to politely excuse myself from the situation, I was met with more pawing and a side of guilt trip. I am probably going to regret admitting this, but I gave him head because it just seemed like the easiest and quickest way out of the situation. The whole time, he talked about my cheerleading uniform and Catholic school jumpers.

In any case, while you’re waiting for “Daddies Date Babies” to come out, you can catch a more limited glimpse of what it’s really like to be a sugar baby by reading my friend Elizabeth Nolan Brown’s piece on her (brief) experiences using SeekingArrangement.com. To make a long story short, Liz’s sugar daddy dates were kind of a mixed bag, and she certainly didn’t make a career of sugar dating. When it got too weird, she stopped. This basic characterization is essentially true of regular dating and regular jobs as well.

Segment of Manchin-backed pipeline blocked despite inclusion in debt limit bill

A federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., has ordered a halt to construction on a section of an interstate pipeline backed prominently by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and fast-tracked by Congress.

In a Monday ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit granted a stay sought by The Wilderness Society to halt construction on a segment of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which would carry natural gas through parts of West Virginia and Virginia.

    Typical activism from the judiciary . . . .

The law enacted last month to raise the federal debt limit included a provision paving the way for the project. It also removed the 4th Circuit’s jurisdiction, saying instead any cases over its constitutionality should be heard by an appeals court in Washington, D.C.

    Hmm, . . . . . I think there’s a bit of an issue there.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVa.), another longtime backer of the project, said the bill’s language was “crystal clear” in a tweet Monday night.

“This latest effort by the activist Fourth Circuit Court flies in the face of the law that was passed by a bipartisan Congress and signed by President Biden,” she wrote.

Oh well. On to the next case.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Never heard of her. Sounds more like she was trying to see if she could liven up the girl’s prom.

      • Mojeaux

iCarly sidekick. My kids loved that show, and I found it inoffensive and possibly at times cute.

      • R.J.

Her mom was afraid of cancer, which killed her in the end. Possibly other family members too. So it might seem creepy but was her mom worrying about her daughter’s well being. Definitely overkill but obsessions can do that.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Who’d have guessed that showbiz parents are not normal.

  20. Derpetologist

Around the 1 minute mark of this ad for Cartoon Network, the normal signal cuts out and is replaced with a Morse code message.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBiJWZRCeIY

I had to slow it down to transcribe. Turns out the repeated message is the name of a cartoon called OK Let’s Be Heroes.

Don’t forget to drink your Ovaltine…

I guess some bored techs decided to play a prank. It’s unlikely the likely viewers of that show even know what Morse code is.

I know for a fact CIA used fake websites to correspond with Iranian and Chinese spies overseas. The search box was actually a secret password field. Unfortunately, all the fake sites used the same block of IP addresses on the same server.

    “Bullwinkle, that trick NEVER works!”

About 60 CIA spies were executed or imprisoned as a result.

What if you have a banh mi party to celebrate the fall of Saigon?

    • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

      You would still get bahned.

    • rhywun

      LOL or writes software.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

You should try renting equipment to homeowners (and contractors) some time.

  22. UnCivilServant

Does anyone know of a good audiobook on the history of India? Specifically the early history. There’s plenty of them telling me how evil the British Raj was, but I’m interested in learning something, anything, about prehistory till the mughals.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

      Kama Sutra?

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

This might be a bit later time period than you’re looking for but still a fascinating story.

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nlMpxUYKTcU

There’s also a podcast of this

      • UnCivilServant

        Thank you.

I’ve realized that I have a great understanding of western history from the paleolithic to the postmodern, have a passable understanding of Chinese history, but am terribly ignorant of India to the point where I can tell you more about islamic subsaharan africa than a region with thousands of years of written records and durable artifacts.

It’s infurating that I’m having trouble finding a good source to start.

Any place to lay flowers for the site where his brain tumor began?

    • Sean

      😂😂 👍

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

I might leave some flowers there too.

Unless I get a chance to piss on his grave first.

Among the three El Salvadorans I have inquired of their opinions about El Presidente Dudebro he has a 100% enthusiastic support rating.

    • Tundra

It’s gonna take a tyrant to fix the cities here.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

        This is true

      • KSuellington

Yup. It may end up getting that bad here in Los Estados UNIDOs. Vamos a ver. Hopefully for all Salvador this guy isn’t their Presidente for life.

  24. Mojeaux

I’mma just say I had chicken gizzards for lunch today and I know you are all up in your envies about it.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

      Gizzards?

Not my bag. Fried chicken livers are the bomb though.

      • UnCivilServant

I saw containers of both at the butcher’s shop. Though of Mo teething her kid on them, then walked on, because I was there for beef.

      • Mojeaux

They were fried. I didn’t give her raw gizzards.

      • UnCivilServant

I may have had a mental conflation with other meat-related conversations where the protein wasn’t cooked.

Though if I were to be pedantic, I’d point out I hadn’t claimed the teething was on raw chicken, just that spotting them reminded me of that conversation.

      • Mojeaux

        Beef == raw

        Chicken/pork == cooked

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Fried chicken livers done well are the motherfucking bomb!

      • Tundra

        Hearts. They are amazing.

      • slumbrew

^^^ this is the correct answer ^^^

Make friends with Brazilians and go to a cook-out at their place. Then consume many skewers of delicious, grilled chicken hearts.

      • Sensei

If you are lucky and can find a yakitori restaurant I highly recommend.

      • Mojeaux

So, speaking of weird meats, I like cow tongue. Chewy, like a bagel. Same reason I like gizzards.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

My grandfather used to keep one of those in the fridge…sliced off pieces and ate it on rye bread with mustard. That’s the only place I’ve had it but it was pretty good from what I recall.

      • Common Tater

I can’t eat them. Have to watch my iron.

      • Mojeaux

Me too, but probably not the same way. I am enjoying not being anemic.

      • Derpetologist

I take iron pills before and after giving blood. I’m O+ so I try to give as often as I can. It’s probably the most useful thing I do. I got a $40 gift card the last time I gave. There was a critical shortage, hence the gift cards.

      • Mojeaux

I can’t give blood at all. My veins are too tiny. They can barely get 3 vials out of me for routine blood work, and they have to stick me in the hand. Woe betide if I haven’t had enough water to drink.

      • Ted S.

I have to watch my iron too lest I burn my dress shirts.

  25. The Late P Brooks

In other global warming news, it snowed in Johannesburg. but weather is not (in this case) climate.

    • Common Tater

      Because it’s white supremacy?

      • Derpetologist

        Apartheid casts a long shadow.

  26. Derpetologist

Here’s a video of me jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I did not pick the music. Perhaps It’s Raining Men would have been a better choice.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mo0xmhJC-g

Same channel has videos of my old stand-up comedy days. I had a few good nights. Most were nothing special.

  27. LCDR_Fish

Yusef- don’t worry about DMs. Just email me at LT Fish Likes Flicks (all one word) – google’s mail.

Probably best to coordinate that way – and I can send my # – not sure what times are good for playing but the weather looks pretty nice for Sat. If it’s kinda close to the metro line that’d be nice – don’t feel that comfortable with most driving/parking in this area. If we want to get some lunch, etc…
