In honor of nothing, it is time for everyone to gather ‘round for the new sound sensations of one middle-aged dude’s taste in music. Yep, you heard that right, and in doing so you will be subjected to, hopefully, sounds new and unfamiliar to most. Of course, I do realize that there will be people who have heard and or heard of all of my music, but, well, we need a dance party here, sounds to groove too, drink too, and maybe cry too.
So, you might ask, what is ZWAK music? Well, it isn’t too complicated. I like punk, post-punk, alt-country, soul, funk, some ambient, a little bit of sludge, and, well, that sort of thing. Or, perhaps, a better way of describing it would be Music to Turn Up. I like to listen to music my LOUD, and I do not insist on good speakers, a properly dialed-in amp, or any other uptightness. I am looking to have one band a week, a couple of live videos, and a little background info. Some bands or artists have a long and strong enough career to need multiple weeks, and some peter out and end up recording acoustic albums and playing the lunch crowd at corporate bookstores (looking at you, .)
And so, to start.
The Gun Club.
Jeffery Lee Pierce, who grew up in the ass end of east L.A., was always an outcast, an outsider, a rebel. So, it was a good thing when punk hit southern California. Pierce formed the Gun Club at around the same time as X, The Germs, Los Lobos, The Rezillos, and the rest of the first wave of that area’s punks and misfits. Gathering a few of his high school dropout friends, he, through sheer force of will, created an amalgamation of John Lee Hooker, Glen Campbell, and Iggy Pop. And then proceeded to piss off everyone who loved or cared for him. As I said, one of the original punks.
The Gun Club is one of those bands that are often referred to as an artist’s artist. Not well listened to at first, always struggling, but other bands take immense inspiration from the direction Pierce took music. He built a career based on albums and touring, and of course, gaining fans all over the rest of the world. Sadly, Jeffery Lee Pierce died of a brain hemorrhage in 1996.
Until next time, same ZWAK channel, same ZWAK time.
Live?
I can’t stand the crowd noises in live videos. I want to hear the music, not the annoying people stuffed into a concert hall.
Note, I have not played the embedded videos, so I don’t know if they have the same noise issue.
No offense, Zwak, I couldn’t separate out the words. I listened to a few seconds and somehow Johnny Cash showed up…
This music bores me.
I liked Sex Beat. Video comment: Nobody does cool hair like that anymore. Too bad.
Oh yeah!
Great feature and terrific first installment. One of my HS buddies was a huge TGC fan. Good memories!
Thanks, Zwak!
More my style
I prefer singers that can actually sing.
I also loved these guys
I never was able to make a mix CD from these guys. I had four CDs and there was only one song that I would skip over. So, I would play all four CDs back to back while I was working.
Don’t know that track but I dug the ones they played on MTV a lot. “What do I have to do” etc.
That was a little gem I discovered on the CD. It was never played on MTV or the radio.
I dig them. A lot.
Nobody does cool hair like that anymore. Too bad.
This guy did it first
I’m not really into punk, sorry.
So one day on FB, I had said that, to my everlasting fanshame, I like Sixx A.M. better than Motley Crue. Somebody replied, “That’s because Sixx A.M.’s singer can actually sing.”
Funny thing is, their singer is actually a producer/mixer by trade and just joined Sixx A.M. on a lark.
So thirty minute rule…..
For facebook fans.

DAMMIT! I ended up arguing grammar with a stranger on FB on a page I dislike.
I can’t really appreciate the songs. To paraphrase a great general, “I know two songs. One of them is ‘Yankee Doodle’ and the other isn’t. ” I know these weren’t “Yankee Doodle.”
Good first installment. Zwak has namechecked Sixteen Horsepower and PJ Harvey in recent weeks, so I’m on board. Also, I’ll be seeing X tomorrow night.
X Gon’ Give It To Ya
/wait, wrong genre
X is awesome. I have also seen John Doe a few times, and he always puts on a great show, and then will hang out in the audience aftewords, have a few drinks.
The music is not totally outside my envelope.
Because he was so goddam effective at getting his way last time
Though Donald Trump is now possibly facing a third indictment, he’s still making plans for legislative moves in 2025, should he get elected again. And, according to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” crew, those plans are reminiscent of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
During Tuesday morning’s episode, host Mika Brzezinski cited reporting from The New York Times, that indicates Trump and his team are looking to expand presidential powers in 2025, using a “decades-old conservative legal theory, which rejects the idea of a three-branch system of government and the fundamental concept of checks and balances.”
“Well, if you love Mussolini, you will love what Donald Trump is talking about for 2025,” NBC News presidential historian Michael Beschloss said. “Mussolini followed the unitary executive theory too, which meant total power to the dictator, no constraints. This is about as un-American, I think you will all agree, as anything I’ve ever heard.”
Good old Morning Joke. He hates him some Presidential power grabs. Just look at the way he calls Biden out all the time.
Yahoo Sports?
Well ya, seems this is their go-to writer

those plans are reminiscent of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
Dissolution of power from DC, dismantling the entrenched bureaucracy, lowering taxes, controlling the border and allowing people to be generally more free are textbook fascism.
which rejects the idea of a three-branch system of government and the fundamental concept of checks and balances.
If you project any harder you are going to turn into a Casio.
Citation needed. Not from you, just is needed.
Expecting Congress to pass laws instead of fobbing responsibility off to the executive branch is fascism.
Not in my lifetime did I ever expect the man who would terrify the Borg more than any other to be… Donald Trump?!
Perot was the prototype — a billionaire that didn’t care what the press thought. But he was an engineer at heart and not a hustler like Trump.
And he had a chart to prove it
Beschloss made his thoughts clear about a year ago: https://twitter.com/BeschlossDC/status/1557894715307171841
Economist Don Boudreaux responding to a critic:
I always wonder what the response is on the other end of these things.
Do they ignore? Do they get pissed off? Do they say “Huh, I guess you are right, I learned something today”?
If high-wage Americans are harmed by trading with non-Americans whose wages are much lower than are Americans’ wages
Is anyone actually making that argument? I believe the argument is twofold: 1. Illegal unskilled immigrants create a burden upon American taxpayers by using services provided by government well in excess of any input they may contribute, and 2. Being illegals, they depress wages for unskilled or lower-skilled labor.
The guy he was responding to made that argument, hence his letter in return.
Also, this wasn’t about immigration but free trade. The low wage non-Americans aren’t immigrants (illegal or otherwise), they are in China or Vietname or Honduras.
Oh no, don’t go.

Sure she is.
All the “moderates” of both parties have significantly more power playing the spoiler if they remain in their current party,
Exactly. The only reason anyone gave a shit about Liz Cheney was because she was a “Republican”.
According to interviews conducted by The Hill, several Republican senators are now saying they just cannot be members of the Republican Party if they are forced to represent the interests of the base voter. These very specifically named Republicans have always been members of the UniParty in DC; however, now they are saying “populism” amid the commonsense, America First voting base is not going to be acceptable.
Populism is undemocratic, obvs.
A second Republican senator who spoke with The Hill said the growing strength of radical populism “makes it a lot more difficult to govern, it makes it difficult to talk to constituents.”
The plebs should just sit down, shut up and take it.
“There are people who surprise me — I’m surprised they have those views. It’s amazing to me the number of people, the kind of people who think the election was stolen,” the lawmaker said. “I don’t want to use this word but it’s not just a ‘red-neck’ thing. It’s people in business, the president of a bank, a doctor.”
Hicks of a feather flock to conspiracies.
Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) warned, “I fear that snap impeachments will become the norm, and they mustn’t.”
That ship has sailed.
Impeachments were for far too long not the norm and still not to the levels they need to be.
I want fisticuffs and caning to come back to Congress and the Senate.
MTG vs. AOC!
MTG vs. LB vs. AOC!
Chips, Dips, Chains, Whips
“There are people who surprise me — I’m surprised they have those views. It’s people in business, the president of a bank, a doctor.”
Politicians and bureaucrats have always been highly vulnerable to reading their own press. “If you disagree with me, you’re an ignorant hick,” has gone from being ad copy to something they actually believe.
Satan incarnate
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s taste for autocracy is well known. But a new report suggests that if he returned to the White House, his agenda to consolidate power would be far more aggressive and well organized than the last time around — thanks in part to even wider buy-in from the remains of the GOP establishment.
The New York Times published an article Monday that found that Trump and his allies are buzzing with ways he could use a radical interpretation of “unitary executive theory” to amass unprecedented power as president. That theory contends that the president holds total control of the executive branch, and it rejects constraints on presidential power such as Justice Department independence and congressional regulations on executive branch agencies.
——-
This level of planning suggests that a second Trump term could do a lot more damage than the first in degrading democracy.
Talking points were issued.
Hell, he might even use the FBI and other agencies as his own Gestapo, persecuting political enemies and covering up malfeasance.
Haha. Yes. How dare he play with Joe’s toys!
Whatever. Some tiresome. If he does win, I hope he purges the crap out of the government. It’s a giant toilet in need of cleaning. Meanwhile Joe Biden tells the Supreme Court to screw off, he is cancelling student debt anyway. Who is abusing power again?
Everybody but us. 🙁
I have my thermostat set at 68 degrees. I am abusing power too. F the man! Whoever that is!
Mine is at 78 but still runs a little cooler. Downstairs temps will be 68.
I have to leave mine at 71. Any lower and my gf won’t get naked.
Mine is at 68. And as soon as I have a bit of free time, I’m going to replace my Nest with an old fashioned Honeywell that doesn’t go online and only has a day and a night setting.
We replaced our HVAC. They put in the stupidest controller. It has one setting and must be switched manually between heat and cool.
It’s not abuse when the left approves.
purges the crap out of the government
Can’t be done. At least not solely as a presidential prerogative. And you aren’t going to get sufficient majorities in Congress out of voters looking for a king.
Uh…”The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.”
Terrified at that thought they are, why, that would put the bureaucrats under his dominion! Biden would never threaten them like that.
Isn’t that “theory” outlined in the Constitution?
Speaking of democracy, sources tell me that Trump is going to prison for life because some prosecutor guy issued another letter. Once the demon is exorcised, everything can get back to normal.
It’s worked out so well for Brazil.
Donald Trump’s taste for autocracy
*rolls eyes*
That theory contends that the president holds total control of the executive branch, and it rejects constraints on presidential power such as Justice Department
I’m pretty sure the Justice Dept. of the executive branch is subservient to the chief executive as the chief law enforcement officer.
And Trump would revive and strengthen rule changes to make it easier to fire members of the nonpartisan, expert-focused civil service perceived as disloyal.
Stop it. You’re killing me.
Where is this organization and how do we trade our current bureaucracy for it?
“Non-partisan” means partisan left and “expert” means leftist poly-sci majors.
Not necessarily, but all are absolutely committed to the sustainment of the bureaucracy that pays them.
Something we discussed a few days ago. I wouldn’t make a very good DI at this stage in my life, my kids/grand daughters won’t be in the first group called.
https://www.lewrockwell.com/2023/07/ron-paul/biden-is-calling-up-military-reservesare-your-kids-next/
They can’t have mine. That’s the red line.
I’m still baffled as to how the draft squares with the 13th amendment.
I know, “FYTW”, but what insane logic do they use to get there?
It is tortured how they say that a concept of the draft is in the Constitution and is just as tortured in saying “we don’t mean THAT type of involuntary servitude”
And jury duty.
The actual case before the SC in 1917 – well they said it was okay for the states to do it, based on a PA SC ruling at the time of the Civil War. Oh, and yeah, every other country in the world can do it, so, even if part of our Constitution says “no”, we think its okay.
As much as the draft sucks, it was the correct ruling. The 13th amendment wasn’t meant to prevent military conscription.
Yahoo Sports?
Haha, yup. The politicization of everything is proceeding splendidly.

Completely OT: jet lag is uncomfortable; jet lag + going to altitude is a bitch. Left Australia at 11:30am Mountain time Friday, got to CO home about 7pm Mountain time Saturday. I had about 5 hours sleep total in that time, my wife about 4. Saturday we both basically went unconscious at 10pm b/c of exhaustion. The last two nights we’ve been awake at midnight. And, yeah, I know most of you have been through this, but still, ugh.
Brutal.
Welcome back, though!
Thanks!
Melatonin to reset your body clock.
It’s the only thing that saved me when I was travelling internationally for work.
I’ve been using it for a few years. Took it on the ‘plane and it was definitely one factor which helped me get some sleep. It’s got me to sleep the last two nights but I need to take it earlier when I feel a little weary.
You take a double or triple dose about an hour before you want to go to sleep to reset your circadian rhythm. Do it a couple of days in a row and that usually resets things for you.
Thanks!
You are welcome.
Melatonin is not a sedative. It does not make you sleepy. Peak melatonin levels occur naturally around bed time, and the lowest levels are in the morning. It is an integral part of the circadian rhythm.
The body produces less and less as you get older. So supplementing melatonin helps old people (yours truly) maintain a “normal” sleep cycle instead of falling into the “old geezer” mode of short sleeps at night and catnaps during the day.
For travelers, supplementing can help reset the body clock.
I’ve never had luck with the stuff. What brand and dosages do you recommend?
NOW Melatonin. 3 mg capsule. I’ve gone from one at night (in my middle age) to four at night (60+ yo).
When I was travelling to Europe and Asia, I would triple my daily dose for a couple of days.
Cool. Thanks.
Woof, big dose. Gives me nightmares in any dosage IIRC.
Woof, big dose. Gives me nightmares in any dosage IIRC.
There really isn’t a standard dose of melatonin for all people. People respond in highly individualized ways.
So start small and work up.
At high doses, melatonin can produce “vivid dreams”. Not nightmare per se, but intense in unpleasant ways.
And at high doses, it can leave you off kilter the next morning.
Again, start small and work up.
TOG: yeah, that would be my concern. 2 x 3mg most nights for me (Trader Joe’s home brand) and it takes me about 5-10 minutes to get rolling. Any more than that, and it’s 20 minutes or so.
So, in every day life, you are trying to boost your normal melatonin level at bedtime to “put you over the edge”.
For jet lag, you are trying to take a very low level of melatonin at “midday for your body clock” and push it into night mode. The side effects of a big dose of melatonin are hopefully lower than the side effects of jet lag.
Wait, you’re not a furriner?
No. I am as American as you are.
Bet you are glad to be home. My solution for being up at midnight – put on whatever I showed last Thursday on GlibFlick.

Morons.
Let’s run wires through a Crispy Creme donut and claim it makes batteries 20% more efficient. You just have to replace the donut when it gets stale and fills with midi-chlorians. We can get a grant and retire.
Just use the batteries to run a generator which runs a motor that drives a flywheel that will be used for power. See how easy it is

Wow, someone is identifying root cause of some of our metabolic problems…
instead devoting his attention to heralding plant-based diets and animal rights.
So close!
Disclaimer: yes, going plant based will improve your metabolic health assuming you stop the processed foods and excess sugar, but throwing plant-based in there is just a mis-identification of cause. Going plant based with twinkies will not improve anything!
“Going plant based with twinkies will not improve anything!”
I WAS TOLD TWINKIES WERE ACCEPTABLE!
Well of course they are. Just not the cream-like-substance-filled-pastry variety.

The rising manufacturer of electric vehicles Mullen Automotive has announced the results of the tests carried out on the technology recently taken over by a joint venture, which notably improves the current performances of the EV, increasing their autonomy. The Energy Management Module (“EMM”) technology substantially increases the autonomy and the efficiency of any present EV battery.

Congratulations. After you get settled, if I recall the area correctly, I would suggest a trip up to Jungle Jim’s to resupply.
One caveat: on the weekends, JJ’s is not for the faint of heart or for those who dislike crowds.
However, if your idea of the perfect food store is one that has a hot sauce department, it’s the place for you.
What about a Cold Sauce Department?
Knowing JJ’s, they probably have that, too. Arguably foodie heaven.

An unbiased source.
MSNBC’s @PeteStrozk, who was fired from the @FBI for being unethical & biased, insists the agency is unbiased: “If you look at former President Trump, if you look at all of the people around him who have been convicted … these people in engaged in crime & were convicted.”
Have a few prog friends who – quite seriously – make the argument that the lack of legal cases against bureaucrats and politicians (including Biden) demonstrate that nothing illegal is going on.
I guess by that metric, there is no racism or corruption at most police departments in the country.
I didn’t know Strozk went over to MSNBC. That should quiet all of those nutters who think he was out to tank the Trump administration, instead of being a straight-shooting FBI man.
Speaking of…. I ate dinner next to Roger Stone the other night.
You know, the guy who was convicted of lying to the FBI for claiming that he knew about Hillary’s emails when he didn’t?
Yeah… Those are the dudes who prove that the FBI is on the level. Flynn, who “lied” to the FBI who were sent by Obama to get him to lie so they could charge him, saying “I don’t know… I don’t think so”.
Totally see your point, dude.
Gotta love that unbiased FBI who keeps raiding Trump’s lawyers offices.
As an insurance person I’ve always found this law found in many states abhorrent.
It maintained the alcohol sale was “legal and valid” and had been found so by South Carolina law enforcement.
But under a South Carolina law, when multiple parties are sued, if liability is found then damages must be paid in full by whomever is capable, regardless of each party’s degree of responsibility, it said.

“Located in West Maui, the popular vacation rental resort has been battling erosion and sea level rise for decades.”
https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/popular-hawaii-maui-resort-lost-beach-18201486.php
No quantification in the article of how much the sea level has risen. (Spoiler alert: about 5 cm since the place was built according to NOAA.) It couldn’t possibly be that they built too close to the water and interfered with the beach’s natural replenishment processes.
It’s got a volcano that last erupted 400 to 600 years ago according to Google. So there is a chance we can stop that erosion and actually gain some land!
When Googling to find out the amount of sea level rise, I first found this from the State of Hawaii: “The sea level around Hilo Bay has risen by 10 inches since 1950. And now, it’s rising faster at about 1 inch every 4 years.” No mention that the volcano not far from Hilo has been erupting for some decades now, which just might be causing the land to sink as the pool of magma is drained. Heck for that matter, the house we stayed at about 12 years ago is now under a lava flow.
Yeah, I can’t trust the numbers from such a tectonically unstable area as being ‘sea level rise’.
Give me some place where we can show it’s neither erosional nor tectonic.
Yeah, sea level is not rising “1 inch every 4 years” – how can anyone write that with a straight face?
Much of Manhattan would be literally underwater.
Fun fact – Manhattan is not an island. It’s a Ship.

There can be no reconciliation.
As the Marxist Democrat revolution pushes forward, House Republicans have once again failed to take legislative action, and the Reconciliation Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery is scheduled for demolition no later than January 1, 2024.
An amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act was recently presented by Representative Bob Good (R-VA).
Unfortunately for defenders of the Reconciliation Memorial, Rep. Good’s addition to the defense spending bill was rejected four days ago in a late-night vote that saw 41 Republicans break away after Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R – AL), who spoke in favor of the amendment.

That was in my neck of the woods. More coyotes in metro ATL than you’d think. Not sure if it’s the same company or not, but they come in and fence an overgrown area and put goats in the enclosure. They’ve done a several jobs in and around my neighborhood.
Had a plumber at the new house in the hills last week. Told us the coyotes nearby could be a problem. A little dog in his neighborhood got literally ripped to pieces. Then they went into the wrong yard…
The male mastiff was missing for a while, then came home covered in blood, none of which turned out to be his. The dead coyotes were found in the woods.

https://reason.com/2023/07/17/tucker-carlson-lends-credence-to-the-stolen-election-story-he-dismissed-as-a-lie/
I unloaded on him in the comments, but the crux of this article is that Tucker Carlson is spreading conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
At Turning Point he warned of the censorship state, and the danger of telling people who have serious questions or objections to just shut up. He talked about how the left got angry at police and looted a Target store, and how the right got angry at Congress and went to Congress.
But the effect is the same. If the people have no voice in the debate, they will get frustrated, angry…. And eventually they will make their voices heard.
Jake tries to gaslight the libertarian community into believing that any mention of election problems is essentially treason.
The takeover is complete. Reason is every bit the mainstream propaganda tool that MSNBC is.
Funny how often Reason supports the establishment even in ambiguous situations isn’t it, all the while employing the worst inferences of behavior and thought and deed from the nonestablishment figures from the right AND the left. They most certainly do fucking blow.
No actual libertarian hears someone saying “censoring the populace builds resentment into anger… It is dangerous” and says “hey, shut up with your conspiracy theories.”
That is right down main street for libertarians.
*dives into comment section*
Yikes it is unpleasant there. How do you stand it?
I don’t.
I am apparently compulsive. I do a drive-by and leave a screed every now and then. There still is an audience who wants to hear libertarian ideas. They go to Reason because of a many-decades reputation. Then they read the comments and get some libertarian reactions.
You will see “I only come here for the comments section” posted several times a week.
It is a shit-show, populated by paid shills from the CWP, the DNC and who knows where else, who are paid to gum up the works and derail any serious discussion. But there is still a stream of new libertarian-curious people coming by, and sometimes they read the comments and learn something.
But mostly, as XKCD said, “someone is wrong on the internet!!”
