Since then, CA has passed a series of “shall retreat” and “non-intervention” laws that effectively make protecting one’s self or property illegal. You’re probably right — I’ve always figured that given it was in the middle of the riots and an obvious complete breakdown of law and order, they figured no jury would convict anyway. And at the time they were likely right about that.
Nowadays after Seattle (CHOP/CHAZ) and Portland… I think they’d definitely find juries to convict regardless of the law. But yeah — all the “we have to be softer on non-violent criminals! So they seized the computers to get evidence of the “hack” (social engineering isn’t hacking — it is just getting stupid people to give you access).
That’s my most charitable interpretation of what might have happened.

I used to work on mortgage servicing software. It is fairly simple stuff. You track the payment streams, forward and backwards, track who is supposed to get paid, split off the payments according to the waterfall in the contract… Not that big of a deal as software goes.
But terribly useful to have best business practices baked into the product. A good mortgage package could basically set you up with everything you need to run a mortgage business and issue mortgage backed securities. Well, minus all the contracts and licenses and capital. But you get the idea.
Still, I don’t see how you get into the billions of dollars. Or into thousands of employees. The package I worked with was made by a company with a handful of employees. The biggest technical hurdle is making the connectors to work with every possible financial package and bank. Basically, they would charge a new customer for the work to build connections to their bank and accounting software, and then roll that into the product as standard options going forward.

The trick is when you are taxing people, you aren’t specific on what that money is going to. “These taxes are for roads, schools and police!”. Donald Trump slammed the judge presiding over his newest criminal case early Monday, testing her three-day-old warning that he refrain from “inflammatory” attacks against those involved in his case.
In a Truth Social post just before 1 a.m., Trump assailed U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan as “highly partisan” and “very biased and unfair,” citing as evidence a statement she made during the sentencing of a woman who participated in the mob that breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“She obviously wants me behind bars,” Trump wrote.
Trump was alluding to Chutkan’s remark during the October 2022 sentencing of Christine Priola of Ohio. Chutkan admonished Priola, before sentencing her to 15 months in jail, about the Jan. 6 mob’s threat to the peaceful transfer of power.
“I see the videotapes. I see the footage of the flags and the signs that people were carrying and the hats that they were wearing, and the garb,” Chutkan said. “And the people who mobbed that Capitol were there in fealty, in loyalty to one man, not to the Constitution, of which most of the people who come before me seem woefully ignorant; not to the ideals of this county and not to the principles of democracy. It’s blind loyalty to one person who, by the way, remains free to this day.”
Chutkan’s sentiments have been common among judges who have sentenced Jan. 6 rioters. Several have expressed discomfort over punishing rioters — who had been deluged with lies about the election by Trump and steered to the Capitol with a warning that their country was being stolen and their livelihoods were in danger — while those who misled them have faced no consequences. But Chutkan is the first of those judges to end up with Trump as a defendant in her court, charged by special counsel Jack Smith with seeking to subvert the 2020 election with lies and a plan to violate the constitution.

That part in bold is why the trust in the justice system is in the toilet. Every single decision is considered invalid by one side or the other (with good reason in many cases) based on the judge’s politics i.e. who appointed them. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Sunday stayed within the ranks and named Larry Snelling, the police department’s counterterrorism head, as his choice for police superintendent of the nation’s third-largest city.
The announcement comes after a monthslong search led by the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability. The selection of Snelling, 54, to head the department is subject to City Council approval.
Snelling will succeed David Brown, who in March announced that he would step down the day after Chicago’s mayoral primary election in which crime was a central issue. Then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost that primary, and Johnson went on to win the mayoral race in April.
