KK’s Playlist

by | Sep 19, 2023 | Entertainment, Jews, Music | 104 comments

As a fan of Top-40 pop, the vast majority of my music playlist consists of shit you have all heard of. I had a dig through every song on my list, and picked out some of the less-well-known ones. DISCLAIMER: I am waaaay down the list on knowledge of hipster obscure bands and music in this crowd, but this is what I got.

Plus we were asked for content, so here’s some damn content.

Beni Kategorize Etme, Sezen Aksu. Probably Turkey’s 3rd most famous pop singer (after Tarkan and Bulent Ersoy), this song is one of her only offerings that doesn’t have a distinctly Eastern Mediterranean vibe. It’s got a bit of a bouncy reggae feel, and lyrics to satisfy your individualist libertarian hearts (translation of the first few lines):

Don’t categorize me
Don’t play with me
Don’t label me
Don’t name me
Don’t caricaturize me
Don’t worship me

Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky, Lee Dorsey. This was recommended by a Glib (sorry – I forgot who) when I asked for energizing/confidence-building songs. Great choice, as it’s now in regular rotation in my ear buds.

Some may say I’ve got no class
But I’m doing what I wanna do
So go with me if you can
Or just do what you can do

Love is the Slug, Fuzzbox. Girlpunk band with one really fabulous album. Their sophomore release, Big Bang, and the apt tagline “Swimming with the Tide But Faster”, as it was trash pop sellout garbage. If you listen to this song, go to YouTube and search for “Pink Sunshine” and notice the difference. I love the piano being used as a rhythm instrument in this song.

You told me one big lie
You gave me the “”I’ll love you till I die””
Now just look where you are
Sitting next to her in her car

La Romansa de Rika Kuriel, Los PaƟaros Sefaradis. The PaƟaros are a (((Folk))) band from Turkey. They preserve the music and language of their Spanish-speaking ancestors that were kicked out of Spain and landed in the Ottoman Empire. Their language is a mishmash of Turkish and old Spanish (mostly Spanish in this song). I think this is a beautiful and haunting piece. I just wish I knew what time period the story was referring to. You’ll notice the guest vocalist here is the same as the first entry on this list!

Rika Kuriel novia de sangre
Delgadika, delgadika
Su korason gondja korolada
Berbil siego en su garganta
Kanta su korason i alma
Sin boz i sin palavras
Asta la fin esta kantando

Queen’s Speech 4, Lady Leshurr. Cheeky Brit hiphop clapback song (think Hollaback Girl) with some funny and clever lyrics. The video was also filmed guerilla-style, and appears to be all one take. I am just really tickled by this song. Now brush your teeth!!

I’ve got a dark skin friend that looks like Rachel Dolezal
And I’ve got a light skin friend that looks like Rachel Dolezal
Which one’s which? Not sure

    Whatever it takes

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Newsom whether Harris is the “best person to be on the ticket” with Biden, referencing an interview last week in which Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) did not explicitly say whether she felt Harris was the best running mate for Biden.

“Of course she is,” Newsom said. “Biden-Harris administration, master class in terms of performance — bipartisan deals on infrastructure, bipartisan deals on guns and debt ceiling, on the CHIPS and Science Act.”

“I mean, by definition. If I think this administration in the last 2 1/2 years has been one of the most outstanding administrations in the last few decades, and she’s a member of that administration, she gets to lay and claim credit to a lot of that success. The answer is absolutely,” he added.

Wipe that stuff off your face, Gavin.

    • R.J.

It has been bipartisan because they whine and whine until the repubs cave. He can say deals have been bipartisan. I still disagree with every single proposal passed. All of them impacted he economy negatively. And the republicans are useless pussies.
Gavin measures success by passing onerous laws. By that definition, the administration is a success.

      • WTF

They make these ridiculous statements because they know the media hacks will never challenge them on it.

    • Gustave Lytton

Tin foil hat: Kamala resigns to be appointed to Feinstein’s seat, leaving the VP slot to Newsom.

      • WTF

The Dems admit that the first female POC VEEP was a failure?
        Never

      • R.J.

WTF has the correct take. The liberal asshat party has backed themselves into a corner. Good thing the President and Vice President just do what they are told and don’t make decisions.

      • Gustave Lytton

What admission of failure? It would solve Newsom’s senator promise, Kamala could spend the rest of her days there (and avoid getting dumped publicly), wins all around.

    • WTF

I wonder what color the sky is in the universe Newsome is living in.

    • Lackadaisical

‘one of the most outstanding administrations in the last few decades,’
One of the best out of what 3-4 administrations? So, middling at best.

“and she’s a member of that administration, she gets to lay and claim credit to a lot of that success.”

She gets to lay? I’m assuming that is intentional since we’re talking horizontal Harris.

    ‘Which one’s which? Not sure’

I larfed. Interesting reading the lyrics to the (((Spanish))) song, seems spellings have evolved since their expulsion. Which makes sense…

    Bus them to Brussels

The Italian government approved new measures to crack down on migration Monday, after the southern island of Lampedusa was again overwhelmed by a wave of arrivals setting off from Tunisia and the migration issue returned to center stage in Europe with talk of a naval blockade.

The measures approved by the Cabinet focused on migrants who don’t qualify for asylum and are slated to be repatriated to their home countries. The government extended the amount of time such people can be detained to the EU maximum of 18 months. It also plans to increase the number of detention centers to hold them, since capacity has always been insufficient and many of those scheduled to be returned home manage to head farther north.

How do they think this will end?

    • Drake

Busing migrants to the north pole?

      • Sean

        Santa already has cheap laborers.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I’d settle for just sending them back where they came from.

    • Ted S.

      Helicopters?

    • Robonerfherder

This is being pushed by the West in order to compromise the Russia/Iran trade corridor and to try to draw Russia into a multi-front war.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

I think Armenia was stupid enough to commit to war games with the US on their territory. It wouldn’t surprise me if Russia actually gave Azerbaijan a wink and a nod to their action.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

You are correct but the Russians aren’t going to come to Armenia’s rescue this time, they’ve been cozying up to the US lately, and the Azeris can and will whip them.

      • Drake

It’s another example of our schizophrenic foreign policy in action. Our leadership would love to get Armenia in NATO and make it another base to encircle Russia. It won’t happen because the Turks are friends with the Azerbaijans. But, let’s give it a try and if a bunch of people die in a war, so what?

      • Robonerfherder

It’s the British method. Drag all possible competitors down with constant war and unrest.

Eventually, there’s going to be hell to pay.

    • KK, Non-Man

Well, this is gonna cause problems at work

    • Lackadaisical

I always root for the side removing kebab… sadly Armenia hasn’t faired well militarily in a good long while.

    Good stuff, KK.

You want haunting lyrical music in a tongue you can’t understand? I first ran into this guy’s music in Crete back in 2007; very well-known Greek artist by the name of ΜÎčÏ‡ÎŹÎ»Î·Ï‚ Î§Î±Ï„Î¶Î·ÎłÎčÎŹÎœÎœÎ·Ï‚ (Michalis Khatzigiannis), the song’s called ΔΔ Ï†Î”ÏÎłÏ‰ (De Fevgo, “I’m not leaving” or “I won’t leave [you]”):

And now a word from the Ministry of Plenty

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday said there is a “disconnect” between the actual performance of the U.S. economy and how Americans feel about how President Joe Biden has handled it.

The negative opinions that Americans share in polls on the economy “mainly reflects their answers on how is the economy more broadly doing,” Yellen said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

But she predicted that people will start to feel more positive about the overall economy once they see the effects of Biden administration legislation and policies.

“It’s going to take some time. We’ve had a trifecta of legislation that President Biden and Congress have passed,” Yellen said.

“We’re investing in America in ways we haven’t for decades.”

    We’re awash in chocolate.

    • The Other Kevin

What are people complaining about? Pharma companies, the defense industry, alternative energy boondoggles, BLM and CRT programs are all doing great! The economy is booming!

    • KK, Non-Man

She’s saying Obama didn’t invest in America? Bad Janet! Bad!

      • Dr. Fronkensteen

Obama was opposed by racist Republicans preventing the Lightbringer from enacting his policies.

      • Robonerfherder

        +1 Diane Rehm

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Evil or delusional. You make the call.

    • Grumbletarian

The rubes are too dumb to understand how well the economy is doing, what with their insipid mewling about high prices and such.

      • Sean

I mean, it is going pretty good for UPS drivers…

  14. The Late P Brooks

Katty Kay, BBC News special correspondent, noted that inflation and unemployment are decreasing as she asked Yellen to “answer the riddle that the White House is finding so befuddling,” which is why “those good numbers” are not being reflected in polling.

Yellen replied, “I agree with you that there’s a disconnect and I don’t have a simple and convincing answer.”

“But Americans have been through a lot,” Yellen said. “The pandemic really took a toll on American families, on children and households.”

“We are enjoying a remarkable recovery but also with high inflation, much of it reflecting supply bottlenecks that developed during the pandemic and then with Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine.”

    Lamps were lit.

    • The Other Kevin

One man’s “disconnect” is another man’s “completely out of touch”.

    • Fatty Bolger

Sigh. We go through this every time we have a Democrat president. When it’s a Republican in office, it’s all about explaining why things aren’t nearly as good (or much, much worse, depending on the situation) than people think.

    • Grumbletarian

The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law, the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act will spur massive infrastructure improvements and grow the “clean energy economy” as well as manufacturing, she predicted.

“We’ve seen since the beginning of the Biden administration, $500 billion worth of investment in manufacturing that has been announced and is being undertaken, that is going to be creating a really good set of manufacturing jobs throughout the country, and particularly in areas that have been missing out on growth and seeing declining wages for a long time,” she said.

I work for a company that is supposed to benefit from the CHIPS Act, and we were told to expect a huge ramp up in demand starting about now thanks to Brandon’s vision and leadership. Lots of hiring, truckloads of money, advancement opportunities galore!

According to upper management, that has been postponed until… well, we’re not exactly sure.

      • Dr. Fronkensteen

Sorry your company didn’t get its share of the graft.

      • Sean

Look, it’s only 2023…a couple more years and you *might* see some results.

      • The Other Kevin

It wasn’t ready for the shovel yet.

My FIL went on the tour and he loves that stuff.

    • blighted_non_millenial

I get not having enough of the unicorns, but being constantly unable to deliver their base and midlevel products is baffling to me.

      • R.J.

It takes a while to even make the lower level stuff. No doubt they based inventory predictions on a model that showed medium or low growth, and then they exploded. That means a shortage for probably 3 years before there is enough in backstock to accommodate demand. Now, this could be done on purpose, in which case the shortage would never end…

    • The Other Kevin

Maybe they used one of their spy balloons to help us locate the missing jet.

^ Lurker from the Bee, this needs to be a headline.

Just had our semi-annual visit from the door to door salesman. Every year, twice a year, a van drops off a bunch of college-age guys and they zoom around our neighborhood on those hover board things. And every time they sell something different, like lawn care and roofing. This time it was pest control. And they always name-drop. “I’m sure you’ve seen John and Pete and Terry switched to our service…” Dude, just go away.

    • Robonerfherder

      *answers phonecall from unknown number*

Hey Nerf, long time no talk! How did you like that quote that I sent to you last month? I included all the things you had asked for.

      *hangs up*

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Wait a minute, Terry switched to their service? I am impressed.

    • R.J.

I put up a nice NO SOLICITORS plate on the door and that solved 95% of it.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Ya got something against lawyers? 😉

  16. Mojeaux

So, last night I had a nightmare. Toward the end of this nightmare, I thought, “This would make a GREAT book. I’ve never written horror before, but this is good stuff! I need to remember this.”

Narrator: She didn’t remember any of it.
