HUNTER BIDEN INDICTED ON FEDERAL GUN CHARGES: Defense team claim parts of collapsed plea deal are still binding.

FEDERAL JUDGE SMACKS DOWN NEW MEXICO GOVERNOR: On Wednesday, a federal judge blocked New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s temporary ban on the carrying of firearms in areas of the state with high crime rates. This is only a temporary restraining order, but it a good sign. I hope the NM legislature impeaches this woman.

BIDEN ENERGY SECRETARY LIED UNDER OATH: NY congresscritter calls for impeachment inquiry on Jennifer Granholm, who also likes lording it over the little people.

CA GOV NEWSOM PUSHES BACK AGAINST BAN ON CLEARING HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS: Perhaps a sign he’s running for President after all?

NEW LYFT FEATURE ENABLES SEX DISCRIMINATION: Lyft launches of Women Plus Connect, a function that matches drivers with riders of a preferred gender. Except they call it empowerment, not discrimination.

WASHINGTON POST TURNS AGAINST DEAR LEADER: Editorial says Biden shouldn’t run for a second term (link to archived version since original is paywalled). Sounds like the word has gone out; I became aware of this article from the social media feed of a prog acquaintance who for years claimed that Obamaphones were a myth.

NASA SAYS UFOs REAL, BUT OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN: And, of course, wants more money to study them. BTW, the new term is Unexplained Aerial Phenomenon.

Wait, what, just happened? I saw Tonio’s links then they disappeared?

    • Tonio

I was changing them right up until publication time but they didn’t show on my feed so I kept moving the publication time up a minute.

      • Common Tater

        OK, it was just weird.

      • Tonio

That’s what happens when you reschedule something. I think it was ultimately a browser cache issue on my end that caused me to not see them and keep rescheduling them a minute ahead. Sorry.

      • Common Tater

No problem 🙂 On my browser, if you hold down the shift key and reload the page, it will flush the cache.

Hey, Tonio, there are a couple small edits I need to make on the piece I just submitted. Is that possible?

All things are possible with enough lube. I reverted your article back to draft so you can make your final edits. Email me when you’re done. Thanks.

He won’t do time, I’m sure of that.

The question is whether they do a plea deal (again) for a misdemeanor. I’m not even sure what misdemeanors are available for lying to the ATF on a background form.

      • Common Tater

I think tossing it a public bin is worse than lying on the form.

  5. Robonerfherder

They’re tying up Hunter so he can’t testify in front of Congress on his daddy’s dealings. It’s not a coincidence this happened just as the House started moving in that direction.

Lots of “taking the fifth” incoming.

Clearly this judge hates children. But didn’t Paula Pot over here also admit that it wouldn’t affect criminals carrying? You know, because they carry illegally anyway.

But think of the message it sent! And the children!

“”Since taking office in January of 2021, Secretary Granholm has violated the Hatch Act multiple times,” Tenney remarked during the hearing. “She owned Proterra stock while her boss, President Biden, repeatedly promoted the company. Her husband owned Ford stock while she personally promoted the companies’ work with official resources.”

“And most critically, she lied, under oath, to Congress, claiming that you did not own any individual stocks when in fact she did. If anyone would like to dispute these charges, all the evidence you need is in the articles I submitted into the record,” the New York Republican continued.”

    No one reads the articles.

Ah I just put her running tally above. Yours has more context

        Good work. Thanks.

      Say what now?

      Novel legal theory there

      • Swiss Servator

        “No take backs!”

      • Swiss Servator

“Hunter Biden possessing an unloaded gun for 11 day [sic] was not a threat to public safety, but a prosecutor, with all the power imaginable, bending to political pressure presents a grave threat to our system of justice,” Lowell continued. “We believe these charges are barred by the agreement the prosecutors made with Mr. Biden, the recent rulings by several federal courts that this statute is unconstitutional, and the facts that he did not violate that law, and we plan to demonstrate all of that in court.”

        Hilarious pro-2A argument from a Biden’s lawyer.

      • Robonerfherder

What is the basis for saying it was unloaded?

That reminds me of the carjacking case I was on where the defendant “definitely wasn’t the guy” but he knew who the real criminal was and that he was “using a fake gun to commit the crime.”

Gotta make sure to avoid that mandatory minimum on the gun charge just in case, you know.

      • Common Tater

“What is the basis for saying it was unloaded?”

I have no idea, but it’s also not relevant.

      • Lachowsky

There needs to be more gun charges filed against the progeny of prominent anti 2A politicians. we might actually make some progress that way.

      • SDF-7

IAMDNAL — but nothing should be binding between prosecution and defense until signed off on by an actual judge, imho. You shouldn’t allow crap without some form of third party oversight.

(And yeah, yeah… FISA court level rubber stamping likely ensues… but sometimes judges actually bother to read things, as we saw).

      • R C Dean

I’m not sure you can categorically say a crackhead with a gun is not a threat to public safety. Especially given the gun safety violations we have on video.

    • The Other Kevin

Still binding. Especially the part shielding him from prosecution of any crimes he may have committed in the past, related to this matter or not.

Justice is a dish best served cold.

J6 defendant Kyle Young sits in a medium-security prison in Arkansas where he is serving 86 months for one charge tied to his interaction with DC Metro Police Officer Michael Fanone. Young allegedly grabbed Fanone’s wrist, a three-second grasp that would later be categorized as “assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers.” Young’s original indictment carried ten charges. All other charges were dropped when Kyle accepted a plea deal in April 2022—according to Andrea Young, Kyle’s wife, the DOJ’s final sentencing memorandum probably delivered the 7-year sentence.

Young received an enhancement (extra time) because Fanone alleged Kyle inflicted bodily harm and prevented him from reaching his radio when he grabbed his wrist. Fanone alleged Kyle’s actions “cost him his career.” Fanone testified in front of Congress, “The assault on me by Mr. Young cost me my career,” he said. “It cost me my faith in law enforcement and many of the institutions I dedicated two decades of my life to serving.” Fanone was off duty that day but self-deployed to the Capitol anyway for reasons that are still unclear.

Video evidence that has come out since Jan. 6 contradicts Fanone’s version of events. Andrea says, “Fanone has changed his story multiple times.” The investigative video here from M5 News seems to confirm Kyle’s version of his limited interaction with Fanone. In reviewing all the available videos, it does not look as though Kyle caused Fanone bodily harm in any way. Fanone’s body cam footage is still under seal to this day.

Surely, we can trust the government and its enforcers.

    • Robonerfherder

Kyle’s actions “cost him his career.”

Even given Fanone’s description of events, he sounds like a total pussy to me.\

    • CPRM

He grabbed his wrist! He could have given him Carpal tunnel syndrome!

Fanone’s body cam footage is still under seal to this day.

Hunter getting charged with felony gun charges is proof Joe isn’t running again. He will pardon Hunter, and as they’re leaving the White House for the last time they’ll both pause in the door of Marine One, turn, and recreate this pic flashing us birds instead of victory signs.

    • Urthona

“Women Plus Connect is an opt-in, preference-based feature that works by identifying and prioritizing women and nonbinary riders. If you’re a Lyft driver, you can toggle the feature on or off in the driver preferences section of the app, while riders will see a prompt that says, “Count me in” or “No thanks.” You can also update your profile with your gender selection.”

So this is only for women and enby drivers?

“The safety measures were introduced after hundreds of allegations over assault and sexual assault in rideshare vehicles, including fatal assaults, which resulted in multiple lawsuits and fines for Lyft and Uber.”

So if some male wanted to assault women they could identify as non-binary and get more women passengers?

  20. The Late P Brooks

What I admire most about President Biden is that in a polarized nation, he has governed from the center out, as he promised in his victory speech. With an unexpectedly steady hand, he passed some of the most important domestic legislation in recent decades. In foreign policy, he managed the delicate balance of helping Ukraine fight Russia without getting America itself into a war. In sum, he has been a successful and effective president.

    WHEEEEEE!

    • Rebel Scum

No fan of the Bidens, but I do think that prison for possessing a gun while being a drug user is unjust.

Was kinda hoping the charges would spark a conversation in the media about the arbitrary capriciousness of that law. Disappointed as usual.

    • Lachowsky

Of course it is unjust and unconstitutional. But if the Gun Grabbers who gladly enforce this shit on the rest of it have to suffer the consequences of their own laws, then good. You reap what you sow.

      • Urthona

It’s kind of a win win here for right wingers.

The only way Hunter gets out of real punishment is by arguing how utterly stupid the law is.

      • sarcasmic

You think so? I still figure he’ll get a plea that involves no jail as long as he stays away from hookers and blow. Add Mexican ass-sex and he could be a Reason contributor.

      • Urthona

I don’t know why he’d have to stay away from hookers and blow though. I thought this was America.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

If you want to make a law unpopular, enforce it vigorously.

    • Tonio

I agree that those laws/regulations are unconstitutional.

“Was kinda hoping the charges would spark a conversation in the media about the arbitrary capriciousness of that law.”

LOL. You know better. The only convo the media ever has is “guns bad, mmmmkay” with generous exemptions for government stooges, and lip service that hunting is okay, but only if it’s a break action, single barrel shotgun, or a bolt action rifle. But in reality they will make gun ownership by “civilians” inconvenient to the point that it’s impractical.

Admit it, jackhole — they could put the literal turd sandwich up there, and you idiots would happily slurp it upvote for it because “Not Republican!” (I would say ‘Not Trump’ but it is pretty obvious that they’ve just decided the UniParty needs to be an official Uniparty like CA and NY).

A couple of weeks back when the generals leading the coup in Niger gave the middle finger to France, the reaction around here was LOLOL, good on Niger for fucking over their former colonial power.

But every time a country that was subjugated by Russia says, “Fuck you, Russia”, the reaction somehow, suddenly, magically turns to “these countries deserve to be destroyed for standing up to their former colonial power”.

      • Robonerfherder

        Two observations:

Russia is no longer bleeding Estonia or Latvia dry like the French have been doing to Niger and have not been doing so for decades.

It was not an endorsement of those countries getting destroyed. It was an observation that if things continue down the path of antagonism along with escalation in Ukraine, they are going to get destroyed. Some might see that as an undesirable outcome and that they would be better served by cooler heads in charge.

None of what Russia does ever counts as escalation — and yes, they started it; they weren’t forced into it — but standing up to what Russia did is.

      • Robonerfherder

Because lining up the Ukrainian army to purge the Donbas of Russian speakers wasn’t an escalation or a provocation. Threatening to put NATO in the country through which Russia has been invaded three times over the past two centuries wasn’t a provocation either.

The blame for the war is primarily with the Brits and DC. They sold Ukraine on a pipe dream and the dumbasses in Kiev bought it. Now Ukraine’s lost hundreds of thousands of young men while DC and London continue to egg them on into their own destruction. Washington and London knew exactly what they were doing and that Russia would see it as a strategic threat that Moscow would not abide. The Kremlin was clear on that. But the war was the goal for the neocons. It was not a miscalculation on their part, it was purposeful.

I’m not responsible for Moscow. I disagree with their actions and think they could have taken other steps prior, but it’s become increasingly obvious that those other steps would have been in vain. The neocons would have continued to push until the damn thing blew up. Now we’ll all be lucky if we all don’t blow up.

I am however supposed to give a fuck about what my own government does and what it is doing is reprehensible.

      • Lachowsky

        Bingo

      • The Last American Hero

Bullshit. Putin didn’t have to invade anything. I don’t like nato but if Ukraine wanted to file an application that isn’t a declaration of war against Russia, and if nato accepted that isn’t a declaration of war either.

Putin saw a weak and feckless government in DC and tried to take advantage. He underestimated the resolve of the Ukraine and the West. Ukraine overestimated their home field advantage and the Russian military.

I don’t approve of any military aid for Ukraine but this didn’t start because of DC.

      • R C Dean

“lining up the Ukrainian army to purge the Donbas of Russian speakers”

Not in Russia. Not Russia’s business (except via diplomacy).

Not letting DC (or the Brits, I guess) off the hook. Although I don’t believe DC (or London) are within spitting distance of knowing exactly what they’re doing on any topic.

If Russia hadn’t invaded, the status quo ante, which was devoid of existential threats to Russia, would still be in place. Which included a smaller NATO. And a bigger (counted trained and equipped troops) Russian army. This was a war of choice. Of conquest, really, as Moscow’s annexation of conquered territory proves.

    • Ted S.

They didn’t need NATO pushing them to dislike Russians, considering how Soviet Russia tried to ethnically cleanse the Baltics by shipping in lots of Russians.

    Total economic war

The United States said Thursday that it was sanctioning more than 150 businesses and people from Russia to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Georgia to try to crack down on evasion and deny the Kremlin access to technology, money and financial channels that fuel President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

The sanctions package is one of the biggest by the State and Treasury departments and is the latest to target people and companies in countries, notably in NATO member Turkey, that sell Western technology to Russia that could be used to bolster its war effort.

The package also aims to hobble the development of Russia’s energy sector and future sources of cash, including Arctic natural gas projects, as well as mining and factories producing and repairing Russian weapons.

“The purpose of the action is to restrict Russia’s defense production capacity and to reduce the liquidity it has to pay for its war,” James O’Brien, head of the State Department’s Office of Sanctions Coordination, told The Associated Press.

  33. Pope Jimbo

Uffda. I don’t believe the numbers in this report on school truancy in Minnesoda.

Of course, no one in the teachers union or King Walz will be held accountable. The teachers union is the 800lb gorilla in Minnesoda politics. They always get more money and make the pols dance. And not one journalo will ask King Walz if he regrets his lockdown edicts.

In Minneapolis Public Schools, for instance, the overall attendance rate fell from 79% to 46% from 2019 to 2022. But while the number of white students attending school 90% or more of the time dropped from 90% to 59%, the number for Black students fell from 71% to 32%; for Native Americans, from 44% to 24%; and for Latinos, from 78% to 44%. Attendance among children receiving special education services plummeted from 63% to 37%.

In 2019, 77% of Minnesota students statewide who qualified for subsidized school meals attended regularly, compared with 57% in 2022. At the district’s wealthiest schools, attendance was high in 2022 — 87% at Armatage Elementary and Burroughs Community, for example. Meanwhile, 25% of children consistently attended high-poverty Nellie Stone Johnson, and just 17.5% at economically disadvantaged Bethune Arts Elementary.

Even more shocking: At Minneapolis’s Harrison Education Center, just 3% of students — one child — attended classes regularly. The center serves students who fit three demographic categories where attendance is historically low: high schoolers living in poverty and on special education plans because of challenging behavioral issues.

    • Pope Jimbo

The data can also reveal positive outliers that might yield possible solutions. In Minneapolis Public Schools, for example, 57% of students are impoverished and the overall consistent attendance rate is 46%. But in adjacent Robbinsdale Area Public Schools, 61% of students live in poverty but 73% attend regularly.

Similarly, Minneapolis’ Lucy Craft Laney Community Elementary has an impoverished student body and a 49% regular attendance rate — even though it’s located a stone’s throw from similar high-poverty, low-attendance schools.

Half the kids in your school don’t attend school regularly, but you are to be held out as a leader because other schools around you are worse.

      • Lachowsky

They just need more money Jimbo. duh.

      • Pope Jimbo

The government would have to build them a new warehouse to hold more money. They already get more money than they know what to do with.

The myth here was that yes our taxes are high, but it goes to get great educations for our kids (and other stuff). So the teachers union became a kingmaker in local politics. They are showered with money at every turn. When scores get worse, it just means they need even more money.

Everyone still believes the old stories about how great our state is at educating kids so they never question what the union wants.

      • Lachowsky

I don’t think you are comprehending. let me put this to you very simply.

        They need more money.

      • rhywun

        57% of students are impoverished

        Bullshit.

How high have they raised the “poverty” threshold this time? Only one iPhone per child?

      • Pope Jimbo

Well 100% of our students now receive free lunches, so I guess everyone is poor?

My guess is that it is more likely that people are poor because they skipped school and ended up with shitty jobs. Then they had kids and didn’t care if the kids went to school or not.

In the first verdicts over riots by supporters of Brazil’s far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, the Supreme Court sentenced two defendants Thursday to heavy jail terms on charges including an attempted coup.

The court sentenced 51-year-old Aecio Pereira and 43-year-old Thiago Mathar to 17 and 14 years in prison, respectively, for their role in the riots that overran the seat of power in Brasilia on January 8.

Overwhelming security, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed the presidential palace, Congress and the high court itself that day, trashing the three buildings as they called on the military to oust leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
