It may not be the ideal way to prepare for Fall, but after we get home from our MI UP/WI/MN vacation, TT and I are going to sneak a flattering likeness of yourself, MR. SMITH, handcrafted by one of the FUNNY GLIBERTARIAN HOOMANS and featuring two handy cupholders, over to the patio of our wonderful and newly-Sasquatch-mad next door neighbors.

We’ll also stock up on pumpkin spice motor oil and tampons.

And it was really great to meet you and TT!

And you must share the pic of the speed hump sign. That’s funny stuff! (or did you already and missed it? I haven’t been here much the last 5-6 days)

STEVE should be happy that I walked today… a lot.

Three miles, in fact. I hit Five Guys, then a Spectrum store, where I got tired of their shit and found a coaxial cable at a nearby Lowes instead.
Then I hit Barnes and Noble on the way to Wegmans.

Wegmans… OMG. We have nothing like this in my old neighborhood. At least ten of my usual, “larger” supermarket could fit inside. I was only there to gawk and pick up a couple immediate necessities. A proper shopping will have to wait.

    • Gender Traitor

      a couple immediate necessities

      Such as culture shock absorbers?

      • Mojeaux

        LOL

      • kinnath

It was a pleasure meeting you and Tom Terrific this weekend.

      • Gender Traitor

We were delighted to meet you and your lovely bride, too! And thanks so much for the mead! πŸ˜‹

      • rhywun

        Seriously.

Oh, and I looked up some prices on their website of a couple dozen personal staples before I arrived here (upstate NY) this week, just out of curiosity.

Every item was about 1/3 less than what I was used to paying (in NYC).

      • creech

If you can find an Aldi’s, you’ll save another 1/3 off the Wegman’s price.

      • rhywun

There is an Aldi about 1.5 miles away in another direction. (Wegmans is 1 mile away.)

I am completely unfamiliar with the joint – either does not exist in NYC or if it does it’s miles and miles away.

      • The Last American Hero

        Food desert! Food desert!!!

      • Chafed

Chicago knows how to fix that.

    • Tundra

      Nice.

I hope the move is a good one for you.

      Walk more.

      • rhywun

        So far so good πŸ‘πŸ»

        Walk more.

That was definitely part of the plan. Biking too, once I get settled down.

There’s more variety for a basic bitch like me within 1.5 miles here than there ever was in Brooklyn. There, it’s like you walk a couple miles and it looks exactly the same as where you started except the ethnic mix is probably different but I still can’t find a decent supermarket or hardware store.

      • Tundra

        Any good paths near you?

      • rhywun

There is a short path along the creek that is in my “backyard”.

Lots of longer paths, mostly rails to trails. And mostly up steep hills. There’s a long lakeshore route that I biked a few months ago and only explored about half of it.

      • rhywun

And tons of shit farther beyond.

    • Sean

Local Wegmans is good. Definitely top shelf.

I do get more personalized service at the local Fresh Market. Especially at the butcher counter. Go figure.

      • MikeS

I assume the meat department manager gets a chub when he sees you walking towards them.

      • MikeS

Of has a sploosh…didn’t mean to assume their gender.

      • rhywun

        lol

      • Mojeaux

I mean, shoot, when I go to Walmart to buy hamburger, I buy a chub or two.

    • J. Frank Parnell

      I hit Five Guys

      Giggity.

    • Chafed

You went looking for coaxial cable? Dude, cut the cord.

      • rhywun

Enh. I want to see what the building offers first for my 75 bucks a month. It turns out I need a box. The landlord was completely useless there.

If I “cut the cord” I have to either pay extra on top of that or find some other provider which I have no idea if there is one here yet.

      • Chafed

I am trying to follow this. You get free cable as part of your rent?

If you cut the cord, all you need is an internet connection. Then you can get Google TV, Roku, etc. The services don’t care where you are (unlike cable). If you have a decent internet connection then you are all set.

      • rhywun

“Cable and internet” is an additional 75 bucks a month, negotiated by landlord with Spectrum. I’m trying to figure out what the “cable” includes. If it meets my needs, great.

If not, I have to make other arrangements which I have no idea what is available here yet and which could be way more than the offered 75 bucks a month.

    • Gustave Lytton

When did the dealer promise your new pickup would be ready?

  5. Fourscore

Fire wood, lots of fire wood. Gas for the snow blower. Keep the truck gas tank full. Propane tank full (as required).

    • R.J.

Texas does not have a winter that I am aware of. It merely gets more comfortable to stand outside and grill.

      • juris imprudent

        The mosquitoes go into hibernation.

  6. R.J.

As long as you are preparing for hibernation, I would suggest aging some cheese wheels and selling them later to fund the freeing of Cascadia. Sasquatch cave aged cheese could go for a pretty penny on eBay.

  7. Fourscore

We try to plan routine dentist/doctor visits for other than winter.

    • cyto

      I do the same thing.

And all of my grocery shopping. And my pedicures.

(We don’t get winter ’round these parts. But I did buy an SUV today that has special traction control settings for driving in the snow. )

      • Sean

        What did you get?

      • cyto

        I didn’t get anything…. I had to pay $20 and pick up the garbage……

      • cyto

        Sorry.

        Reflex.

        The wife won this round.

We have 3 teens (well, 2 teens and a teen adjacent 12 year old). So she still wants a 3rd row. I said “minivan is the proper form factor”. And “gas is important”. so I was looking at a used plug in hybrid Pacifica. 25k miles, asking 29k.. but with fees of about 3k… so really 32k. Seemed a good deal. They are way over 50k new as configured. Like 65k last I looked.

But the wife is *cool*. She wants an SUV. An SUV that she can look good in front of her friends with. Like a Lincoln Navigator or Range Rover.

No… I don’t have it like that. Not anymore. Gave it all up to raise the family.

So…. She liked the Buick. But it is still way too much. (plus… buick??)

Base model Chevy Traverse. Only one they make with a bench in the middle so it seats 8. Only comes in Taupe cloth seats. So I added aftermarket black leather seats. Looks fantastic.

She is over the moon. A custom ride that none of her friends can claim to have.

I’m more meh…. but I did get it for several grand below sticker, which is rather unheard of these days.

I’m going to have a lot of biting my tongue though. I can’t help doing the math on the gas – driving back from the dealer, to the daughter’s soccer game and to church last night we did just over 60 miles. Cost me well over $20 in gas. For 1 stinking day.

This is why we drive a Hyundai Ioniq for our daily driver. 50mpg. The not-quite-11 gallon tank gets us through over a week… which is over 500 miles.

  8. cyto

    OK guys.

    I finally had a breakdown.

Look. I know you all got there years ago. Most of you got healthy and never looked back. But I kept hanging around the corpse of my once beautiful love. And today there was finally a straw that landed just at the right moment and broke this camel’s back.

I lost it on the commentariate over at Reason. Not my normal, methodical, overly wordy takedown of the writers. Nope. I went full “flame on” mode.

    Why do I mention it?

Because I tagged you guys in the comments. And it would be rude not to give you a heads up.

So here…. go have a good laugh. Or cry. Or maybe just stand quietly and go… “Huh. ‘Bout time”.

      • cyto

I miss the group from The Agitator.

It was a serious group. It had real things to say.

      • R.J.

You won’t get that from me very often. I am a primitive, cave dwelling libertarian who knows what he likes, and smashes commies with a big club. A man of few big words.

      • Chafed

I still have the mug. Now I want to find Balko so I can throw it at him.

      • cyto

I knew I truly, truly loved this group.

It may be possible that the world since 2015 is simply a science experiment, and the Glibs are the subjects. We are all actually brains in a jar, connected to a matrix that is just a little too bonkers to actually be real.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Cyto, I feel your pain, and the loss of a good discussion group. I used to write for Ordinary Times*, and had been reading and commenting from back when it was The League of Ordinary Men. And I watched that joint firmly place its head up its ass with inflated self importance, until it just became… too much. A lot of good conversations and real connections when down the tube so fast as to break necks.

*yes, notAdan, you guessed it correctly.

    • kinnath

      Welcome home.

    • rhywun

Dude, step away from the HyR.

      It helps.

      • creech

It is worth it to read some of the replies to strawman progressive bullshit. Why? Because all those strawmen eventually turn up in conversations with left wing acquaintances and I’m better prepared for their arguments. Separate the wheat from chaff, and ignore the flame wars, and you’ll sometimes find H&R valuable.

      • cyto

Yeah… you will find me. And fist. That dude is a genius.

        And some conservatives.

    • Fourscore

I still have a few 20 year old Reason magazines around. It’s like your Granny’s Nat Geos, I just can’t part with them.

Thanks Cyto but going back to Reason?

      • rhywun

I found buried in a moving box the issue with an overhead snapshot of my residence, only it was off by a mile or so because of Queens’ (where I lived at the time) idiotic addressing confuses the hell out of everyone.

        Tossed it.

      • cyto

        “but going back to Reason”

I did offer up a list of demands.

        The list included begging.

        And hiring actual libertarians.

My list may almost as unrealistic as the UAW list.

    • Chafed

Wow cyto. I can feel your distress. Reason has become a shadow of its former self. There are still some goods writers but you need to seek out their stuff.

    • tarran

I haven’t gone back to TOS since I had an exchange with Ron Bailey where I told the quisling to his face that he should be fired for his dishonest coverage of the AGW scams.

The painful lesson I learned from my ex wife is that there is no benefit to giving any consideration to liars who hate you. Life is far more pleasant and peaceful when one simply stays away from bad people. And their apologies and promises to turn over a new leaf are all lies.

    • Gustave Lytton

Sorry cyto. Yes, drop in a bucket. Everyone wants to use it as their personal gimme piggy bank

How to lose the people, 101:

I made my youngest a login to her Broward County Library account on their app yesterday. It is on her library card, which is in her name and knows her birthday (she is in 6th grade and just turned 12)

Across the top banner of their app, they have a row of book covers. A list of suggested titles.

Right in the center, top of the page….

    “Gender Queer”.

You know… the book that Kennedy read on the senate floor and freaked everyone out because it was so crude and offensive.

My government, knowing they have a 12 year old girl looking for a book, pushes a treatise on same sex encounters and discovering that your Gender identity isn’t what you thought it was and how to explore your pronouns to discover your true Gender.

    What.
    The
    Fuck!?!

Screw you, people! I am actually on your side on the core issues… but damn! Trying to convince my daughter she should question her gender? At 12?

Screw you with a rusty tent pole.

    • cyto

And now I have used profanity for times number 1 and 2 on the internet. In the same day.

      Definitely having a breakdown.

    • rhywun

      crude and offensive

      It’s blatantly pornographic.

I hated the whole “groomer” accusation but… WTF else is it?

Hey, you thought you had no stake in that escaped murderer manhunt in PA? You’ll be “glad” to know that U.S. taxpayers will be footing the bill for the security upgrades that the Dem controlled county government didn’t want to pay for. GOP held a rally today, asking why Dem D.A. didn’t deport the Brazilian illegal immigrant when his ex got a restraining order against him? Left to roam free, he eventually stabbed her to death.

    • cyto

Luckily our attorney General and his allies on capital hill bravely took on the issue of deadly pistol braces during the hearing

See…. putting a brace on a pistol so you can shoulder it makes it uber-deadly. It becomes a short barrel rifle. They are illegal because they are so much more powerful and so much more accurate.

Yes. He said this. And they all congratulated each other on powning the Repub-tards.

  12. cyto

Holy crap! The Rubicon is officially crossed.

The UK parliament is demanding that Russel Brand be denied any ability to earn money.
They sent a demand letter to Rumble. It suggests that they were behind the demonitization on YouTube.

    https://youtu.be/YEa9pcOAZo8?si=Ydpso9Cf1rLTKKcP

    • Brochettaward

That’s going to be a real test case for Rumble’s commitment to free speech.

      • Chafed

        Very much so.

      • cyto

I hope it is a test case for the government of Great Britain to pay actual and punative damages on the 9 pr 10 figure scale.

Violating free speech is a no no. Pressuring companies to keep a citizen from earning a living… any living?

That should be a big penalty – concomitant with the size of the threat to the citizenry.

And really…. absent rounding people up and shooting them in a shallow mass grave, is there a bigger threat to the citizenry than trumping up fake charges and then making sure you can never earn a living?

And apparently they can do that with a memo these days.

      • Chafed

It isn’t America. That won’t happen. It’s disgusting. But it won’t happen.

    • Brochettaward

I’d also wager anything that the alphabet agencies and Biden administration are involved here. With the scrutiny put on them with the Twitter files, they are probably looking to get their Euro cronies to do their bidding for them. More than one way to suppress speech on private platforms.

      • cyto

That was 100% my assessment as soon as two news agencies came out at the same time having investigated some random comedian by calling everyone they ever hooked up with and taking a year to do it.

Zero chance this was run by a paper and a TV station.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Considering that, all of a sudden, numerous accusations of SEXCRIME come out of the woodwork, which is one of the leftentariats favorite methods of unpersoning someone. Yeah, the whole thing is bullshit.

        Julian Assange also says hi….

      • cyto

Yeah…. Tucker covered that with Andrew Tate. They offered up a conspiracy theory version of the progressive steps they take to silence you if you start singing from the wrong songbook.

        This is on the list.

also…. how big is the corruption?

Daily Mail – “Tucker Carlson lets Andrew Tate rant about how society wants ‘the woman in charge and the man with no backbone'”

That’s their headling. Some guy interviewing a controversial podcast host “let them rant”.

β€œBut now that Brand has matured into a deeper and more critical thinker, all of his previous behavior is being used against him. These are tactics employed against the defectors from cults, and in its own way is enlightening. Here again we can see that the structure of power which dominates contemporary society, and not even just the elites, isn’t a council of conspiratorial elders, but a mutual blackmail ring, in which everybody has something on everyone else, so that defection is suicide.”
Good insight and 100 percent correct.
