Return of the Swiss Links

by | Oct 2, 2023 | Daily Links | 267 comments

“I have … business to attend to. You take the Links.”

Don Brett has, er, requested that I resume the Monday Links. It appears he has, um…other activities in which to engage. I certainly was not going to say no. The several men brandishing various small, but powerful automatic weapons made his request even more persuasive.

So, it looks like you are stuck with me for the foreseeable future. Let me just get this out of the way…

You know you deserve this…for something you did.

I guess the links must be next;

  • West Africa continues to be sad.
  • “I wanted to create something that says, ‘This is Japan’.” I think you can say it was a success.
  • Just remember that SW Asia still sucks.
  • Reminder – this is the best, bitchy and gossipy Swiss business magazine. Just hit Translate in your browser if you don’t read German. Only problem is that the UBS-CS thing has sucked all the oxygen out of the room for the past year plus.

Bonus – witness the malice of Hate Birds, The Birds That Hate.

Celebratory Music.

“The several men brandishing various small, but powerful automatic weapons made his request even more persuasive.”

    I see.

    • EvilSheldon

“Whatever they’re paying you, I’ll double it!”

  2. Common Tater

“You know you deserve this…for something you did.”

    That’s purrfect.

    • The Other Kevin

We’re going to give him paws about saying that in the future.

      • Pat

You’re going to get his dander up with comments like this, and then the fur is going to fly.

      • Fourscore

The whole kitten cabooble is gonna be in trouble

      • Fourscore

        caboodle?

    • Aloysious

I don’t know about you, but after seeing that picture I’m not really feline okay.

    • Ghostpatzer

Still waiting for Swiss to pounce with righteous angora.

      • kinnath

angora is from rabbits. so, your pun is rejected.

      • SDF-7

Now now.. we don’t need to be splitting hares around here. (Unlike the Conservative Party of UK apparently).

      • kinnath

        Hare today, gone tomorrow

      • Ghostpatzer

        Your rejection is rejected

      • kinnath

Thank you sir, I’d like another.

      • Sean

Are you trying to goat a reaction out of him.

      • Animal

        I don’t think he’ll carrot all.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

It’s hard to keep tabby on all these puns.

“Yoshida plans to build and sell five of the machines for the well-heeled robot fan, but hopes the robot could one day be used for disaster relief or in the space industry.”

There are five people who want that for $3M?? It’s not even a robot since it needs a pilot.

  4. Ted S.

You know you deserve this…for something you did.

I certainly do deserve more pussy.

    • Fourscore

“Deservin’ ain’t got nuthin’ to do with it”

  5. Common Tater

“Only problem is that the UBS-CS thing has sucked all the oxygen out of the room for the past year plus.”

It also uses a different connector.

    • SDF-7

Nice one… I knew I wouldn’t be the only person that at first read that as USB-C.

  6. The Other Kevin

Don’t you worry Swiss, we’ll all do our best to earn that narrow gaze.

    Regarding the music link: W-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-would.

I wonder why the African story isn’t in the news? I have seen more stories explaining how confusing exit doors and fire alarms are than I have seen stories relaying the events in Africa.

    • Common Tater

No one gives a shit about Africa, including most Africans.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

        Black Lives Matter Not.

      • Suthenboy

No one has made that more apparent than the BLM movement.

    • Fourscore

Betcha the CIA, USAID and Air Africa know something but they’re not saying.

    • Drake

Sounds like France decided not to intervene to save that vestige of their colonial empire. Maybe the Foreign Legion could have reversed the coup, maybe not. The media toadies rather ignore it than explain it.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Something something Gnomes of Zurich behind the curtain.

A convoy left the northern city of Gao, which lies 300 kilometres (185 miles) southwest of Kidal, early Monday, the source added.

Another security official said the convoy was made up of 119 vehicles and was currently stopped on the road to the north of Gao.

Never before has such a large collection of Toyota Hiluxes been deployed with this kind of Mali-cious intent.

  11. KK, Non-Man

    Howdy Swiss!

    • Swiss Servator

Get back to me when they are serious – i.e. they take up arms.

      • Robonerfherder

        Si si senor

      • Tundra

        Would NATO get involved?

      • Robonerfherder

        If Catalan courted Russia, sure.

Right now, I think the better question is whether NATO has a future at all.

      • Tundra

I guess I was just wondering if the obligations counted if it’s an armed secessionist movement. Catalan declares itself sovereign, picks the fight, etc.

Also, I wish they all could be Catalan girls!

  12. KK, Non-Man

They want me to download an app to watch the hatebird thing 🙁

    • Pat

Works on my machine. Could be uBO doing its work though, I guess.

Accurate representation of how aggressive Canadian Geese are:

    Um…”Canada Geese”

      • Shpip

They’re just feeling put upon now that every other Basic College Girl is donning Canada Goose jackets as the weather cools.

        They’re not down with that.

      • SDF-7

Poor person is taking a lot of flak for that jacket.

      • Ghostpatzer

Doesn’t take much to ruffle their feathers, does it?

      • Drake

Was behind a farmer in an old pickup truck who had enough of their shit. He sped through a line of them crossing the road and ignoring cars. Hate feather and body parts flew in all directions while I laughed.

    • Sensei

There has to be a Trudeau and India relations joke here somewhere.

      • SDF-7

It likely would be a real sikh burn.

      • Sensei

It’s Asian relations not native so no ruffled feathers.

      • Ghostpatzer

The Department of Turban Renewal will fix that right away.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Oh, Goa away with that cheap shot!

      • Shpip

I swear my kid got those at Target for $39 last year.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Bedazzled, though? ✨

        Tayswazzled

      • The Other Kevin

I’m sure Warty has plenty of shorts like that. You don’t do all those squats to NOT show off.

      • The Last American Hero

I always figured Warty was a old school basketball shorts kinda guy.

    • Pat

You could have had your pick of high waisted jorts exactly like that for about $3 at Goodwill when they went out of style in 1998. Everything old is new again.

Also, how does one become sufficiently affluent to buy a $1,200 pair of jorts while possessing the sort of brain and intellect that would lead one to buy a $1,200 pair of jorts because a pop singer wore them to a football game?

      • SDF-7

Inheritance is the first thing that comes to mind. Sugar Daddy is the second. Onlyfans prostitution is the third.

      • Common Tater

        “Onlyfans prostitution is the third.”

That rarely pays. Most people on OF make less than $200 month.

      • Robonerfherder

        I’m sayin’.

      • Common Tater

So you think there is nothing going on between them?

      • Mojeaux

Neh. I won’t be crushed or vindicated if I’m wrong or right, but they a) don’t “go” or b) act as if they’re lovers. Do I think they are friends? Yes. At most, they might be friends with benefits.

    • Suthenboy

Herd animals. Human tendencies for revering certain other people kind of disgusts me.
Guess what? Those revered put their pants on one leg at a time and occasionally shart their pants just like everyone else.

      • Mojeaux

If Taylor Swift shat her pants, half the Swifties would strive to emulate her.

      She’s not even hot.

      Sad.

      • Brochettaward

Her face is pretty much perfect.

Whether you are into her depends if you are into that super model type look. To me she is like something that’s technically beautiful, but which I want nothing to do with. She seems like a cold person in general to me.

      • MikeS

Wrong as usual. There’s something wrong with her eyes. Too narrow. Too far above her nose. Her mouth is kinda puckered, too.

      • Fourscore

Wait, she’s wearing Depends? Now you got me curiouser and curiouser. I can understand the interest now…

      • MikeS

Got those beautiful 8X10s* you sent me! Thanks!

        *wink wink, nudge nudge

      • Fourscore

Were they folded and spindled as requested?

      • MikeS

No, they arrived perfectly flat. They must have had some new people deliver it.

      • Gender Traitor

        MikeS!!!

I was just out weed whacking, and the gal next door called to me. She said she’d found STEVE SMITH on their patio, and at first she blamed her husband for getting it without telling her. He, of course, pleaded not guilty and guessed that it was TT & me who were the culprits.

        She loves it! 😃

      • Suthenboy

She is hot but then every college and Jr. college in the country has girls that hot and hotter. They are poison mostly, but they are hot.

      • Sensei

        Spectacular!

I never liked the giant robot anime genre. However, the franchise always got top music talent to write and sing the opening and closing music for the franchise. It has lots of really good music that was quite popular outside the franchise.

      • Suthenboy

        “Chicks dig giant robots”

Now see….I was expecting one of those mechanical eccentric wheel thingies with a giant dildo on it.

  14. Brochettaward

    First.

    • SDF-7

So…. you’re going for intentional self parody at this point?

  15. Suthenboy

Every time an American says “this is Japan” they are just scratching the surface of Japanese weirdness.

    • Sensei

Hence a good part of my curiosity.

I can also say that everyone I’ve met as part of my language adventure has been amazingly friendly and helpful.

Also you should don’t believe the unfailingly polite BS. My language class used to be right after the children’s after school language classes. The inattentive yapping moms there letting their children run wild had nothing on the moms in general in NYC.

  16. Brochettaward

Watch Ryan Clark, Shannon Sharpe, and Steven A. Smith dance around attacking everyone on the Steelers but Mike Tomlin.

I don’t think anyone here really cares. Mike Tomlin signs off on everything this team does. He signs off on every play call and he’s kept Canada for three seasons. Mike Tomlin hasn’t hired a successful coordinator in a decade and a half. No great offensive mind wants to work for him because he’s too controlling of something he knows little about.

He’s a defensive guy who falls into the trap of building an offense that is the exact same type as he drools over playing.

Ryan Clark tries to pin Matt Canada on Ben Roethlisberger because they hired him as QB coach before making him offensive coordinator. Fuck you, Ryan.

    • Brochettaward

And to be clear as to why media dances around criticizing mediocre Mike – IT’S BECAUSE HE’S BLACK.

    • rhywun

Yeah he sounds like a real douchebag but shot in his home seven times at 1:30 in the morning? I’d bet good money on it being something domestic or drug deal related. His background hints strongly at it.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM

Yeah, domestic was my first thought.

      • Sensei

Same thought. Seven times is a crime of some kind of passion.

      • Robonerfherder

        Or a cop

      • Pat

7 rounds on target from a full mag dump would be wildly optimistic for a police shooting.

Part of what makes EVs interesting to me is that packaging allows for handling and space in ways that ICE cars can’t be constructed. OTH, ICE construction allows for weight its benefit on handling along with better range and more interesting driving.

When you design a platform from the start for both ICE and EV you get the negatives of both. I’m shocked to say Jalopnik nailed it with the headline of its review.

The BMW i5 Is The Impossible Burger Of Electric Sedans

Either have hamburger or a veggie burger. But don’t have a veggie burger that poses as a hamburger. If I’m going to get shit range and heavy car I’d rather deal with slower acceleration and better handling with much more range and a lower price. ICE 5 series for me!

    • Mojeaux

veggie burger that poses as a hamburger.

“veggie” + “burger” == vegan plant slab posing as a hamburger

      • The Other Kevin

Black bean burgers have survived for a while because they’re honest about it. They taste like black beans and don’t pretend otherwise.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM

The Real Canadian Superstore™ has a house-brand veggie (but not “vegan”) burger that I would willingly eat, particularly if grilled.

They are, of course, persistently back-ordered from the supplier and usually unavailable to buy. Primary ingredients are mushrooms and swiss cheese.

Everything else I’ve tried over the last thirty years or so has been heinous.

    • Suthenboy

      Also, ICE cars work.

The Supreme Court of the United States will get back to work on October 2. As is now tradition, the 2023–24 term will give the Republican-appointed justices on the court plenty of opportunities to revoke rights, promote gun violence, and make the world safe for wealthy white men and nobody else. As is now also tradition, the elected branches of government—as well as the Democratic Party—will do nothing to stop those six conservative justices from imposing their far-right cultural agenda upon us all.

I honestly don’t get why Westerners would want to party or vacation in Dubai or any other strict Muslim society. Seems like it is just asking for trouble.

They aren’t kidding folks. They aren’t hand-waving away parts of their religious texts with “Oh, God didn’t really mean that…” If you go with your eyes wide open, fine — I just don’t think girls in their 20s hoping to land a prince have their eyes open (in many ways).

      • rhywun

This. I would not even visit Turkey or Malaysia or any of the so-called “moderate” Muslim countries. Most of them are rapidly backsliding to a previous century.

And how the fuck does a flight from Turkey to NYC go through the Middle East, anyway?!

      • Sensei

The individual wanted the 10 hour layover there instead of Paris as they thought it would be more (from memory) interesting.

I would take the Dubai layover just to go skiing

      • UnCivilServant

I wouldn’t be on a plane with a planned stop in Dubai. Or any port in that region.

And I have a lifestyle that’s separated from their recommended by the occassional glass of alcohol and five prayers a day.

      • Rat on a train

I recall the flight duration to the Philippines was about the same going East or West. Dubai is a major hub going East. That was a nope.

      • Derpetologist

Ah, Dubai. Home of the world’s largest fleet of poop trucks…

The Burj Khalifa cost $130 billion to build, but they never connected it to the sewage system. Most days, there is a traffic jam of poop trucks near it in the evening.

      • Robonerfherder

        Huh…

I think Derp should rebrand to King Cliff Claven.

      • Robonerfherder

I think it has more to do with a seething resentment of ignorant Westerners who don’t understand recent history at all.

These people are pissed about decades of bombings and they can’t take it out on their own government. Of course they’re looking for an opportunity to get some payback on some dumb college student.

    • Suthenboy

      Oh well.

      • Derpetologist

I had a good time in Egypt back in 2009. Now I sorta wish I had gone through Syria and Turkey as well on the same trip. The Army almost sent me to a language training course in Jordan, but I did not make the final cut. Oh well. The guys who went had never been outside the country before.

  21. The Late P Brooks

Part of what makes internal combustion engines special and appealing (to me) is is their nonlinear power delivery. I like a motor which stumbles a bit at low rpm before it gets up on the cam. I don’t even like variable cam timing. Give me a motor with a spike on the horsepower curve; one that wants to rev.

You can keep your electric motors with full torque at idle and traction control. Give me something which tries to jump out from under me now and then.

    • SDF-7

Give me something which tries to jump out from under me now and then.

For a daily and my use EV is perfectly usable.

For something to enjoy – I completely agree. Part of the reason the emissions compliant ubiquitous 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder with a tabletop diesel like torque curve is completely uninteresting to me. May as well have an electric motor.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Having ridden hopped up 2-strokes, being able to stay on the power band during shifts is a skill that pays big dividends across the motorsports world.

“Dayjia Blackwell shared videos and photos on her Instagram Stories that gleefully documented the mass plunder of several businesses, including an Apple store, a Foot Locker, a Lululemon and a liquor store.

The content creator with close to 650,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok could be seen laughing, clapping and shouting “Let’s go!” as she witnessed suspected looters fleeing the scene while she was driven across the city.

Blackwell was even seen taunting the local police — encouraging them to arrest her hours before she was charged with six felonies.

But in an open letter to the media, Jessica Mann, a lawyer representing Blackwell, said the media portrayal of the 21-year-old influencer is “unjust.”

“It sickens me to witness the media’s compliance in what can only be described as an all-out assault on black and brown people, as their character and actions are mercilessly vilified,” she wrote in the letter posted to her Instagram.”

He struggled with asthma as a child. He was 24 when his mom and wife died on the same day. He was almost 40 when he went into battle for the first time and was one of the lucky few to avoid tropical illness. A few years later, he survived an assassination attempt. When he was 55, he died nearly died during a months-long expedition through the jungles of South America, and when his honesty about it was challenged, he insisted on going on a speaking tour rather than rest. He died less than 5 years after that.

And during all that time, he wrote a best-selling history book, got elected president, and got one of the first Nobel Peace Prizes for brokering a truce which ended a war between Japan and Russia.

Good ol’ TR. Even death could not erase him.

    • SDF-7

I respect TR for a lot of things. Being the figurehead for the start of the Progressive Era is not gorram one of them. (Yeah yeah… it was the fashion of the times… someone else would have done it… Still set the stage for thrice-damned Wilson.)

      • Derpetologist

If TR had not split the Team Red vote by running as an independent, the arch-paleoconservative Taft would have been elected. Later, Taft opposed entry into Nato.

And his imperialism set the stage for America as the world’s policeman. His great white fleet ended up as scrap before it ever fired a shot in battle.

    • The Last American Hero

America’s first dictator. Lucky for us, a reasonably benevolent one.

    • Suthenboy

Reputed story of. that assassination attempt: Dude Jumps out of the bushes while TR is preparing to leave for a stump speech. Bullet is stopped by a whiskey flask in his jacket pocket. He orders minions to go back into the house and retrieve a small bible. TD tosses the book on the ground and shoots the Bible.
At said speech he relates to the crowd how he was nearly assassinated (he was still bleeding) then displays the Bible trumpeting loudly how the Bible saved his life.

I love that one, true or not.

      • Brochettaward

He’d have more impact talking to his NGO buddies who are encouraging this shit south of the border. He could do that quietly behind closed doors.

I don’t know what he would actually hope to accomplish. This strikes me as purely a PR move. Even New Yorkers are getting fed up with this shit, though certainly not enough to realize why its such a hot button issue for southerners who are stuck dealing with this influx for years and years with a fraction of the resources at their disposal as NYC.

I know 2 songs by Taylor Swift and one of them, she doesn’t perform.

What I have heard leads me to believe that she is one extremely sharp cookie and her dealings with record companies about her copyrights are no less than wise and unforgiving. She writes most of her own (and other people’s stuff), she keeps control of it, she donates a lot of money to food banks everywhere she tours, and she seems like a genuinely nice person. So I’mma give her a lot of judgmental leeway. The girl is not stupid or vacuous.

    • KK, Non-Man

Her fans are a little passed about the Carson Daly sketch I mentioned up there ^^

      It was extremely condescending tbh

    • Brochettaward

I think she’s intelligent as far as pop stars go.

I also think she sold out the people back from where she came from in 2020 during the summer of love.

      • Mojeaux

I also think she sold out the people back from where she came from in 2020 during the summer of love.

        Expound?

      • Brochettaward

She started as apolitical and as a country music star who crossed into pop for a bigger audience. She stayed apolitical until she decided to endorse Democrats (though that started in 2018) in Tennessee and in general post-Trump. Then she jumped on the BLM bandwagon.

She claims she was following her moral compass. I think she just caved to the constant demands that she support current day causes.

      • Mojeaux

Oh, I forgot all about that, which just goes to show how much attention I am paying to her.

I’m paying a lot of attention now because I think it’s hilarious celebrities just now heard about this little magical place called “Kansas City.” I’m also highly amused that suddenly, our quarterback’s name is “Mawho?”

      • Brochettaward

I was basically ignoring the entire thing until yesterday when that piece of shit Kelce’s commercial for Pfizer dropped.

    • Mojeaux

      “Better Man”

Yeah, I do like sappy formulaic music, but, like formulaic pulp fiction,* it’s harder to write than you might think.

*I spent my 20s trying to hit that Harlequin bullseye and never quite did.

      • SDF-7

My impression of her songwriting is that she’s really, really good at evoking an emotion or a scene. It doesn’t need to be more than that — not a saga, just a short story or less. And that lets her fans connect with her — because what she writes is often / invariably something true to the human experience, especially for younger women. “She really gets me” as has been said of many artists through time.

I mean take this one — she sets the scene, gives compressed character background and even is a bit self deprecating (“She would have made such a lovely bride / such a shame she’s fucked in the head, they said”). Connection made and seems humble enough to not be above her fans.

If she’s faking it, she’s a hell of a lot smarter than people give her credit for — it is a great formula.

I think most of her shitty politics stems from wanting to / moving to NYC and getting into that bubble of “artists” there. But it could all be bullshit performance from day one. See above for how many more fucks I have to give on the topic…

    • Pat

She writes most of her own (and other people’s stuff)

She’s been working with a team of at least 3 producers, one of whom is Max fucking Martin, ever since she crossed over from country ~15 years ago now. She gets writing credits because she puts asses in the seats and checks in the bank, not for actually writing songs. NTTAWWT, that’s how being a pop star works, just don’t fall for her “I’m still just a down-home girl with a guitar and a dream” shtick.

      • Brochettaward

I don’t know how much of her stuff she writes, but I do know that’s the image she and her team of people (they all have a team these days) want to cultivate.

      • Mojeaux

just don’t fall for her “I’m still just a down-home girl with a guitar and a dream” shtick.

Dafuq? The girl writes music. And so she has a team behind her. Natch. And?

      • Pat

        The girl writes music.

If she’s contributed more than 5% to any song she’s released in the last 10 years I would eat my hat. And again, that’s standard for pop stars, so it’s not an insult, it’s just mildly annoying that she’s still treated like a songwriter instead of a performer. Nobody pretends that Ariana Grande or Beyonce are writing their hits when they’re working with the same team of producers.

  30. The Late P Brooks

I know 2 songs by Taylor Swift and one of them, she doesn’t perform.

I don’t listen to tweenie-pop radio, so as far as I am aware, I have never heard a Taylor Swift song. As for the rest of it, there is no shame in being a smart savvy business person. Watching the game last night, and the one before, the “relationship” all seemed completely scripted. Maybe the NFL thinks the Swifties(?) are their future.

    • Brochettaward

Like every corporation that sells male-oriented products, they are and have been obsessed with building up their female viewership/customer base. The NFL hasn’t suffered the sort of consequences as say Lucas Films or Marvel, but the product sure has suffered for it.

      • Brochettaward

I should just say that all marketing corporate types seem obsessed with selling to women and they convince themselves it’s smart because women supposedly control household spending. They are willing to do this even if it means fucking over men who built the brand.

      • SDF-7

I figured it was because they’re trying really hard to turn young men into women (and fuck them over in more ways than one). Hence win-win marketing to women… they’ll be like 90% of the population if they have anything to say about it!

  31. The Late P Brooks

I remain mystified how so many here are obsessed with a pop star and her boyfriend.

I have been working on a secret project. One that has the potential to tilt the entire battle against seconding once and for all.

It is a process I call Firstception, and it requires great skill to carry out. The goal is to implant a First within the mind of another, even a seconder. They will have no idea where this First came form, but the truth is it will be from my Third Eye the entire time. I have been inserting Firsts into Firsts, but I need to go deeper. A First within a First within a First.

I can turn the biggest seconder into a Firster with this. Albeit only temporarily. But as a tool to amplify the First, it is unstoppable.

    • MikeS

Lindsey Graham is a traitor. I mean that quite literally.

In a recent interview with CBS Face The Nation, Lindsay Graham suggested that any new government funding bill would require many billions more in Ukraine military aid well beyond the $24 billion already slated, and that if conservatives want funding for border security, they will have to submit to an ongoing proxy war in Ukraine. In other words, the plan is to hold conservatives and America hostage using the immigration crisis.

In the election of 1980, Carter proposed building a barrier on the border. Reagan’s response was that friendly nations don’t put on 9 foot tall fence on their border. And then he granted amnesty. That was supposed to be a one-time thing.

Human migration is hard to stop, but it can be managed. Charge an entry fee and then charge more for a green card and more for full citizenship. No green card or no citizenship, back across the border you go.

That the MLB “investigated” and suspended him is fucking atrocious. A lot of conservatives ae guilty of supporting this shit, though. hey were the ones cheering when Roger Goodell started marketing himself as the sheriff who was going to clean up the NFL and other sports commissioners followed his lead.

The good old days where guys like Tagliabue swept shit under the rug were far more preferable to me than what we get now. It’s kangaroo justice at its fines where it doesn’t matter what you did, but how much media backlash is anticipated.

And no, that one aint hot.

The players should sue the league, too.

      • Brochettaward

In the case of the NFL it all ends up in internal arbitration because of the union which has already basically given the commissioner a blank check. And from there it goes back to the commissioner.

There is little recourse for a player who gets screwed. Once upon a time, I though the backlash after the Ray Rice tape had taught Goodell what a fool’s errand he was on. He made himself the bullseye for every questionable decision, but he refuses to give up his power in the end. The lure is too great even in the private sector.

The owners should have forced it down his throat, but as long as they are making money they’ll seemingly tolerate the figurehead of their entire league being despised.
