Swiss LGBTQ+ rights groups hail 60-day sentence for polemicist who called journalist a ‘fat lesbian’
GENEVA (AP) — LGBTQ+ groups hailed the 60-day jail sentence a court in Switzerland gave to a writer and commentator for deriding a journalist as a “fat lesbian” and other critical remarks.
The Lausanne court sentenced French-Swiss polemicist Alain Bonnet, who goes by Alain Soral, for the crimes of defamation, discrimination and incitement to hatred on Monday. He was ordered to pay legal fees and fines totaling thousands of Swiss francs (dollars) in addition to the time behind bars.
Soral lashed out at Catherine Macherel, a journalist for Swiss newspapers Tribune de Geneve and 24 Heures, in a Facebook video two years ago. He called her a “fat lesbian” and said Macherel’s work as a “queer activist” meant she was “unhinged,” according to Swiss public broadcaster RTS.
“This court decision is an important moment for justice and rights of LGBTQI people in Switzerland,” said Murial Waeger, co-director of the lesbian activist group LOS, in a statement. “The conviction of Alain Soral is a strong signal that homophobic hatred cannot be tolerated in our society.”

The Federal Reserve has overseen a sharp drop in inflation, without unemployment spiking or the US economy slumping into recession. However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his colleagues deserve little praise as they caused the headache in the first place, Jeremy Siegel says.
“We should not give the Fed credit for fixing a problem they created,” the retired finance professor wrote in his WisdomTree commentary this week.
“It is comparable to the Fed recklessly driving on the streets, hitting a pedestrian and then rushing him to the hospital so he did not die,” Siegel continued.
“But there are still massive injuries; the American public suffered through the worst inflation in 40 years — something that did not have to occur had the Fed curtailed its money growth much earlier,” he added.

The case was a guy accused of rape, basically a he said/she said between people who had known previous contact. I’m proud of Mrs. TOK. She and a number of other jurors pickup up from the 911 call and the police body cams that the cops had been to the alleged victim’s apartment a number of times in the past. They were not supposed to notice that, but they submitted questions to the judge about it. And so, mistrial. (Lawyer Glibs, can you clarify why this information would be a problem?) The judge and the lawyers met with the jurors afterword so she got a good look into the legal process and thought it was cool.

If someone “rapes” someone over and over and over after being invited inside each time, it can call the credibility of the plaintiff into question.

IANAL but it shifts the focus from the defendent to the alleged victim through their past acts. Even if she’s insane and has reported 100s of fake incidents they’re supposed to be judging the facts of this one as presented, not those past acts.
That said, I’m assuming the prosecutors brought those clips into evidence.
So why, in 2023, are we still not properly accounting for the real risks? It’s hard, but it is possible. My research – as well as that of other other economists – is working towards building global weather shocks into modelling of what climate change will do to individual economies, which should radically change economic predictions.
In the meantime, when you see economic modelling suggesting climate change won’t do much, you should treat it with serious scepticism. Look at what is being modelled – and everything left out.

Wholesaler buys different beans from around the world. Takes orders from localish coffee companies, custom mixed. Localish distributors bag custom mix in their bags and sell. Every area seems to have it’s favorites, usually two different mixes and they are usually close to the same.
In Louisiana it is Community Coffee and Mellow Joy. I will drink either as they are nearly indistinguishable to me. I drink a lot of coffee. Custom here is anytime someone comes. to your house for any reason at all the first thing you do is offer to make coffee. That custom seems to be fading a bit but it is stilll around.
Even if they say no I make coffee anyway. ” No? Ok, if you change your mind let me know”
Then I sit in front of them and sip my coffee. About half of the time they change their minds.
