Hey, folks. Sorry the links are late. Just, uh, stepping in to give SugarFree a hand.
Odds being taken as to whether or not he lives through his whole term.
Good thing everyone there is double vaxxed and triple boosted.
His name was RICO. He wore a diamond.
Okay, that should do for now. Peace out, Glibbies. Fingers crossed.
Even Spud has been replaced by a Bot. It’s Wednesday Bot, not Tuesday.
I was hoping for The GIF.
Fixed.
I liked it before.
That mistake shows it’s the real Spudalicious, not some AI imposter!
Hey…
Hey now
The vax doesn’t work. The boosters don’t work. And the tests don’t work.
Keep taking all of them though.
I know a few people with generalized brain bleeding. Previously healthy, but lots of boosters…
:/
…but enough about politicians…
How do you know their brain wasn’t bleeding in the first place?
Chicken or egg?
Maybe brain bleeding causes a desire for boosters?
Better keep my mask on then…
Apologies for the immediate off-topic, Spud but:
How many folks use Eyepiece / Monocle?
Trying to figure out if it’s worth submitting some patches.
/back to your regular links
I haven’t used it for a long time.
I’m using something that I downloaded years ago and installed in Chrome. I don’t remember which of the tools it was.
I do!
All the time on my Chromebook.
I used to use it in Firefox, then switched to Brave.
I use it in Brave with Tampermonkey (although it looks like the cool kids use Violentmonkey these days – will be testing that shortly).
Can confirm that https://violentmonkey.github.io/ works just fine in Brave.
I confess I didn’t realize Tampermonkey went closed-source a while back.
Please do!
I can’t glib without Eyepiece or Monocle (I don’t know which either – it’s labeled “Monocle Eyepiece v. 3.15”.
Alrighty, I’ve e-mailed Trashy (GitLab is fighting me trying to open a pull-request).
Mostly I’m addressing performance with the dynamic comment refresh (should be far kinder to the server, at least bandwidth-wise). It should allow more frequent updates w/o crushing the server.
I’m in no way a Javascript guy, but if people have complaints/requests, let me know.
FWIW, I don’t use that feature.
The thought occurred that I may have done a bunch of work on a feature nobody but me uses 🙂
Still, it’s done.
Yeah… it breaks the way I glib.
I read all the new comments and then I hit refresh and read the new new comments etc.
New new comments popping up when I’m not done reading the old new comments messes with my head.
If you hit the ‘unread’ count it jumps you to each of the new ones – but, yes, if there’s a lot of new comments, I’ll turn off the auto-load, read the comments, mark as read, then turn it back on.
I do it like Rhywun … on Brave/Firefox on PC.
It doesn’twork on Samsung Firefox mobile anymore (it did once).
I’d like one for iOS.
This works on my iPad with Safari:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/userscripts/id1463298887
That’s just a random javascript compiler. I don’t know how to make Eyepiece work with that.
Not quite – it’s a userscript framework (like Tampermonkey) for Safari on MacOS & iOS.
https://github.com/quoid/userscripts#usage
Install instructions there – you need to get Eyepiece on your phone/tablet and point Userscripts to the directory the script is in.
That said, I’m trying to troubleshoot why my version isn’t working on my iPad.
You overestimate my ability to understand how to do anything independently in Apple.
I use the same. It was a bit of a PITA to install the script.
But since I often read Glibs on the iPad it was worth the hassle.
I haven’t been able to get Userscripts/Monocle to work on my iPad. I should probably try again.
Apple makes it tough to get to the file system.
Open the files icon. Make a folder. I called mine scripts. Jump to the GitHub and download the script there to that folder.
Point the app slumbrew notes at that folder.
Turn the script on.
Yeah, they lose me at “ Once the above is complete open the containing app”.
I’ll make a note to flesh out the install instructions and see if I can come up with a rock-solid set for iOS.
Is the script you downloaded called:
monocle.user.js
And is it in something other than the root folder?
I seem to recall it won’t work in the root or default highest level folder. I don’t remember what I did specifically. It’s been a few years.
So I went to the Glibs page
The only way I know to use it is to add tamper monkey to mobile Firefox and install Eyepiece by clicking the link.”
When I click the link, I get a page full of code.
I can’t remember how I saved the script. If I figure it out I’ll let you know!
I use it – and adore it!!! – on my laptop, but I’ve never quite figured out how to get it to work on the browser on my phone. Definitely would if I could.
STEVE SMITH ALSO GIVE FUNNY SUGAR HOOMAN HAND, BACK INTO STEVE SMITH CAVE.
With all the attention SF has been getting from STEVE SMITH, I figure SF will be walking funny for a couple of weeks.
BY HAND, MEAN REACH-AROUND.
How many Argentinian generals do you need to lose a war?
Wikipedia says they have about 70k troops. That’s about 3 divisions and some training / admin. So there’s 6 or 7 Generals. Maybe a couple more for planning. Ten total tops.
Unless of course they are following the modern American model.
They have models of modern major generals?
US Army has 70 odd brigades, which are commanded not by Brigadier Generals, but Colonels. There are 231 generals (1-star through 4-star).
How many Admirals?
And they know the kings of England; can quote the fights historical.
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
Ohh, fancy talk,
Tall Cans!!
HEY YUFUS!
I bought some at the hobby store, so yes, yes they do….
Argentine president Javier Milei has shaken up the command structure of the country’s Armed Forces. The ultra right-wing politician assigned the Air Force to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest executive body of the military. In addition, he introduced changes in the leadership of the Argentine Army, Navy, and Air Force. The most drastic modifications were made within the army, where Milei appointed Alberto Presti as Chief of the General Staff and automatically retired 22 generals.
What’s Spanish for ‘perfumed princes of the Pentagon?’
What kind of retirement benefits will they get? Can they transfer into lobbying or the Argentinian defense contracting? May be a not a bad gig.
ultra right-wing
Funny, but I seem to recall that meaning someone deeply militaristic. WTF is wrong with journalists these days?
They lie, constantly?
Just read it as “Ultra Icky”.
Don’t know why that struck the nerve it did, but you sir may owe me a new keyboard.
I just spat beer everywhere.

An old Bloom County, but a goody.
I don’t remember that one. Was it not in the collections?
I recall that vaguely as a really early one, when the boarding house was still used as a boarding house. I would say that may even be pre-Opus.
Time to go rereading.
It’s in this.
Breathed made other jokes about Barry Manilow, I just can’t find them in the moment.
“Let’s run over Lionel Ritchie with a tank.”
Tough to beat:
“Let me graze into your veldt,
Let me stomple your albino.
Let me nibble at your buds,
I’m your love rhino.”
they should steal this album cover
Wasn’t one the first appearance of (what would later be known as) Bill the Cat another one of the Barry Manilow jokes? Two cats with headphones on, one listening to death metal, the other easy listening. Last couple of panels show the cat listening to easy listening music yelling about Satan and the devil. I seem to recall Barry being mentioned by name in that strip.
Yep.
That’s the one I was specifically looking for. That strip still makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Of course, the picture has to be an interracial lesbian couple.
“And non famous folk have jumped on the bandwagon too. ‘Who else woke up a virgin?’ asked Hugh Jas on X, formely Twitter.”
Huge Ass?
“‘However, the concept of virginity and the morality attached to it is totally made up and has been used as a tool to shame people.
‘Whether you are having sex for the first time or the 100th, the important thing is how you feel about it. Virginity is a societally constructed term and doesn’t have a physical, measurable basis, contrary to what many still believe.’”
Math is hard, let’s go shopping — for sex toys.
I had to tap out of the article.
I suppose STD’s are a social construct, too.
A ripped hymen and a bloody cherry doesn’t have physical, measurable basis?
As a measurement for virginity, not really.
Eh..fair enough, I suppose. A little finger play works just as well.
I was always told it was horseback riding.
Retroactive virginity is the best virginity.
Since MikeS isn’t around much, I’ll say it for him:
Dafuq is that?
Let’s take this to its logical conclusion:
‘Whether you are being raped for the first time or the 100th, the important thing is how you feel about it. Rape is a societally constructed term and doesn’t have a physical, measurable basis, contrary to what many still believe.’”
Feminists already did that forty years ago.
I thought the hot new talking point was all heterosexual sex was rape, regardless the context.
That’s a decade or more old.
Published in 1987:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercourse_(book)
I actually though it was earlier than that, because I was reading this in High School.
I forgot how far that goes back.
I named-checked that in one of my books.
New? Andrea Dworkin has been dead for 18 years.
Well I just go ahead and take pride in the fact that I’m at least a decade behind on the current flavor of insanity.
Virginity meant that the woman you were marrying wasn’t going to give birth to someone else’s baby within the next nine months.
Yeah it’s considered “gross” to want to spend your resources on your own kid. But that’s how it was. Deal.
Oh, who about this one…

[Steve wakes to the sound of his phone ringing]
‘Hello?’
‘Hey Steve, it’s Amy! Watcha doing later today? I thought maybe we could go visit my folks before they take their winter vacation in Florida.’
‘Amy, are you insane? I dumped you at Rick’s New Year’s Eve party when I caught you fucking Mark in the upstairs bathroom!’
‘No I didn’t, I’m a virgin.’
‘What the fuck are talking about?! You had five sexual partners before me and we had sex for three years running!’
*sigh* ‘Look, Steve. I’m a virgin. So despite whatever happened that night it no longer counts as reality..besides, virginity and infidelity are societally constructed terms and they don’t have a physical, measurable basis, contrary to what many still believe.’
…this is kinda fun.
A negative rapid COVID test result helps reduce, though does not entirely eliminate, the risk of passing along a coronavirus infection. There is a chance that a single rapid test may not detect an infection in its initial stages.
Multiple tests over a time period, such as over two or three days, can be helpful, “especially when the people using the tests don’t have COVID-19 symptoms,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The tests aren’t reliable. That’s why you should take them repeatedly. Also, you should take the test even if you’re not sick. That’s what the science tells us.

I hope there are some dental techs in the new arrivals. My appointment for tomorrow was just cancelled and moved to August 8th. The pay is around $30-40 @ hour
but there seems to be an acute shortage. I tried another office but they are not accepting new patients.
I need a doctor and I can’t get an appointment until the end of March.
I wonder if I’ll be visiting the ER again before then.

fudge factor
Yet the environmental cost of regular plastic is 10 times higher once waste management, greenhouse gas emissions and the damage to the ecosystem are factored in. The additional economic burden, which the World Wildlife Fund calculated at over $3 trillion per year in 2019 against a market cost of $370 billion for all plastics produced that year, is currently borne by governments and consumers rather than companies.
Plastic polluters will soon have to start to pay their fair share. California is currently discussing a bill that would require textile companies to design, fund and implement the collecting, sorting and recycling of the garments they produce. The European Union proposed in July that fashion companies either collect a gradually increasing percentage of clothes, linen or shoes or pay a fee towards the cost of managing waste. That seems sensible given that 85% of discarded shirts and dresses end up in landfills.
The approach, known as extended producer responsibility, is also at the centre of discussions around a United Nations treaty to end plastic pollution, to be finalised in 2024. To be effective, however, the “polluter pays” doctrine has to impose sufficiently high financial contributions to deter overproduction. In France, where a scheme of this kind has been in place since 2007, the fee has averaged just 0.16 euros per garment, says Bloomberg. Targets to reduce the use of virgin plastic, which has increased by 11% globally since 2018, are also sorely needed, although oil-producing countries including Saudi Arabia and Russia are against legally binding caps.
We pulled some numbers out of our ass to buttress our prefabricated conclusions.
California is currently discussing a bill that would require textile companies to design, fund and implement the collecting, sorting and recycling of the garments they produce.
Sounds like everyone will soon be wearing hair shirts.
My dream is one day, manufacturers will tell CA to stuff it and just stop selling there. Extra boner if it is a car company.
Gas companies. When Chevron/Valero/etc. pull their refineries out of the bay area, I will laugh maniacally.
Hey now….I do a fair amount of work N of San Fran for those refineries. Given my options in the midwest this time of year, I look forward to it.
/it amazed me how many pro-Trump signs I saw, and pro 2A stickers in the area just 90 minutes from San Fran
Yeah, Concord is not exactly Dem friendly. But, and here’s the rub, it is only a small part of the bay.
But, from experience, the jobs at the refineries are highly coveted.
I spent my career in the East Bay Area. I rode ambulance in Richmond, then Pittsburg and finally the San Ramon Valley, where I ended up spending my fire service career. I used to teach wildland firefighting to the Chevron FD, because they have some wild land exposure at the refinery. And the global headquarters is in San Ramon, that I’ve visited on calls many times.
Chevron may have moved out of SF, but don’t ever expect them to leave the Bay Area.
“The ultra right-wing politician…”
They are going to have to come up with a new moniker since everyone to the right of Mao is now “ultra right-wing.”
Well, there’s always “fascist”.

The husband should have shut the fuck up about the waters ski and just smugly cupped is own crotch when telling people how his wife suffered a genital rupture.
Yet the financial challenge of addressing climate change while also cleaning up the planet is so huge that many governments around the world are starting to act. Global corporate titans had better get ready to pay up.
By hook or by crook, we’ll strangle the goose who lays the golden eggs.
Finally home. That theoretically could have been avoided if I just stayed seated at Group. It was a strange day. It started perfectly well and took an unfortunate detour.
It wasn’t a full seizure, but I was hovering in that purgatory. Pretty big tremors, but they never ‘drifted’ to my right side. If it does, I take special note. Possibly had a small/ short olfactory hallucination. Brain was out of sorts, mostly cuz it was occupied with a constant “systems analysis.” My mental flakiness was noticed by at least one medical professional.
All I fucking needed was 15-20 mins of peace. Sending me to a fucking hospital, a local palace of pain and damnation, only added poison to my furnace. Stress amplifies my epileptic symptoms. My hatred of hospitals should come as no surprise. My rap sheet makes me a medical curiosity.
Theoretically, my chill day could have begun five hours ago when I’d get home from Group normally. Well. *Deep breath* What’s past is prologue. Not to be forgotten nor dwelt in.
Me at noon: [In] ER. Baby seizure kinda. Normally don’t remember trips here. This one was totally avoidable, but def warning signs.
One Code Blue here so far. Two corpses. No place for sick people, hospitals. Especially when I’m the most well person around.
Sigh. Onward and upward. Should be able to leave soon. Friend is picking me up. Phew.
We don’t want you to die alone from a seizure.
I know. My long-form answer for that is [redacted]. The kindness of people is tremendous. Mostly wasted on me. Others deserve far more than me.
Meh. Just a bad day and another stepping stone. They all count.
I just hammered out 1850 words on trying to understand how a shift register works, and it will probably pass 2000 words by the time I get an experimental setup described for gathering definitive answers.
How much would this bore Glibs if I sent it in?
(Note, I’m missing parts needed to run the experiment, but plan to have them by the end of the week)

Haven’t seen those words since the 80s.

I have wired up the breadboard.

Well with the fire, she’s probably not cold anymore.
1) They needed to give their homeless camp an Indian name. Giving things a Dakota or Ojibwe name sends a thrill down the legs of our local Proggies.
2) They should have sued the mayor
Someone should tell the Indians living in Camp Nenookaasi that sleeping in a yurt is cultural appropriation. Hopefully outraged Mongols will descend on them and make them pay for their microaggressions.
Also, this is the warmest winter ever here in Minnesoda. We only have a dusting of snow and most of the lakes still haven’t completely frozen over.
“without appropriate plans to house those who are evicted”
Well, they should start making plans, then.
How to brush bear’s teeth.
Wait, is this suitable for work?
Totally.
Huh, well I suppose there is some advantage to knowing how you’re eventually going to die.
We’re still at the tail end of Mercury Gatorade, right? Today certainly felt like it, as my employer’s payroll processor seemed to be telling me, “GT, no matter how many errors you find in this week’s payroll and bring to our attention, and no matter how thoroughly and carefully you double-check it, we are by God going to screw something up!” 😒
Wouldn’t Mercury Gatorade be highly toxic? :-p
That’s a bold strategy Cotton
The defense for the lady who organized the theft of $230M for Covid meals for kids is earning their keep.
OK, but given it is the FBI – I’ll hold out some doubt about her guilt.
Did she say three words in a row to the FBI? They’ll charge her with lying to an agent.
Has anyone caught the reasoning behind why Claudine Gay is being allowed to return to the Harvard faculty?
If a professor was credibly accused of plagiarism and data falsification, wouldn’t they get canned?
Don’t know how Harvard handles things usually, but I think there was already a “review” which cleared her.
If they do want to get rid of her, they would have to do another review. If found guilty, then it would depend on how Harvard’s contracts are written.
Even this case – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arming_America – which was the most egregious in recent memory, resulted in the historian resigning, rather than being fired.
Yeah, as I recall – that review was done after she had already been cleared by the Board.
She has tenure, and a tenure committee needs to formally review her work and make a decision. My guess, she will be gone to “higher” pastures in six months.
Polling the glibertariat on how SCOTUS rules on CO and Maine election cases taking Trump off ballot:
9-0 reversing, lambasting the lack of due process
6-3 partisan split
5-4 reversal
Rulings upheld.
I’m gonna go for 6-3 split.
I’ll try 7-2. Wise Latina may decide constitutionally.
Is “Doesn’t grant cert” an option? Or are you counting that with “rulings upheld”?
I think I’m with you on this one.
Trump is so clearly guilty of insurrection that SCOTUS doesn’t need to get involved!!!!!
Turned down because the case isn’t ripe enough.
I have no confidence that SCOTUS will do the right thing.
Speaking of “Copacabana,” there’s that book I wrote chock full of drag queens singing disco. Of course, that was written when men dressing like women was an art form, not “transwomen are women.”
