Judge blocks Trump from giving closing arguments in his own defense in NY civil case
Judge Arthur Engoron has revoked permission for 2024 Donald Trump to make his own closing argument in his New York City civil fraud trial, according to the Associated Press.
The former president and his team had been discussing the possibility with Judge Arthur Engoron. According to CNN, sources revealed that Trump’s lawyers had asked Engoron to allow him to speak during the closing arguments, and the judge said there would be restrictions regarding what could be said.
Trump refused to agree to any pre-conditions as recently as Tuesday night. Engoron revoked permission after Trump’s lawyers rejected the judge’s insistence that Trump stick to “relevant” matters in the case.
I had planned on writing something for Donald to read at this. Glad I didn’t bother.

For the first time in St. Paul, Minn., all seven City Council members are women. They also make up the youngest and most racially diverse council in the city’s history.

I agree with all of your assessments of them. Would 4 out of 7.
There’s like 1.5 woulds there combined, at best.
On looks alone, this is correct. Factor in they are all politicians and it drops to 0 of 7.
What if I’m the mayor and I need my hooker and blackjack casino to pass?
You bribe them. Has Bob Menendez not taught you anything?

I’d up that to two woulds, but I have a weakness for moderately attractive brown girls.

I’ll bet it’s St. Paul that gets fucked good and hard.

The Firsts definitely aren’t coming from that group in St. Paul. Those ladies have low grade middle management written all over them.
St. Paul is about to find out what happens when you let HR types control the C-Suite.
But that’s democracy, so they’re getting what they wanted — good and hard.
I forgot about the First thingy. Ha ha Brochee in YOUR FACE LOSER!

It would never happen, but goddamn I’d love to have OMB call Letitia James a corrupt cunte and the judge a damn fool who should be hooted out of his own courtroom — then defy the judge to hold him in contempt.
I don’t even like Trump, but this whole affair has been kangaroo court kabuki from the get-go.

The next easiest thing is if you give us a .doc, .docx, or .odt file with you text. Bonus points if you send media files (pics, etc) as separate attachment and use text tags to tell us where shiznat goes, ie [fluffy_bunny.jpg here, centered, caption “Fluffy bunny.”]

What if Trump promises to make a full admission of guilt and throw himself on the mercy of the court? Would that be acceptable?
No.
Engoron is the worst judge in the country.
Not because his conditions were unreasonable, but because we are now all deprived of a great closing remark. Maybe the greatest.
ha. so true.
There will be other opportunities. It may not be too late for use to write a great closing speech for him. A fantastic speech, using only the finest and most classy words ever uttered.
Serious questions for the lawerly types:
a) how common would it be for a defendant to speak as part of their own closing statement. As a non-lawyer, this seems an odd request to me.
b) do judges normally have much control over the content of closing statements? Again, as a non-lawyer, I thought opening & closing statements could be pretty broad.
Curious.
Judges have pretty much complete control in their courtrooms.
If Trump were representing himself entirely, going the total pro se route, he’d be allowed to do his own closing statement but subject to content restrictions.
Suspect it’s the refusal to agree to stick to the topic that is bothering the judge. He doesn’t want to lose control of his courtroom.
Except the judge has proven the topic is not if Trump is guilty of anything but just how guilty and evil he is.
They also make up the youngest and most racially diverse council in the city’s history.
I see a visit from President Jungle Fever in the near future.
I do not see even one white.. oh wait.. i just remember what diversity actually means.
If you believe the wokesters, people can only be represented properly by someone of the same tribe.
Taking that to be true, it would appear that St. Paul crackers are being denied true representation. 2/3 of St. Paul is white, so seems like the DOJ should step in.
Correct. You cannot represent someone unless you have the exact same superficial skin color and gender.
Maybe there’s a majority-majority district clause in the Voting Rights Act.
Who represents the white peoples in St Paul? I’m fairly certain an all white city council in Detroit would be subject of a conversation or two in the msm?
We need a 450 pound white trans man STAT. That will keep the board all women and give those icky whiteys a voice.
Where would we even find one outside of a drag queen bar or my local library?
Probably behind the camera, taking that picture of the new St. Paul board.
The asians probably. same thing.
Uffda! Should have read further down.
St. Paul has approximately a population around 260K with 2/3 of them being white. That is a lot of kids out there who will fail in life because they don’t see anyone who looks like them on the City Council.
260K is chump change at the border. The new arrivals will be headed north, where they can be represented by those that look like them.
Anybody want to see my surprised face?
“He testified that the lab leak hypothesis — which was often suppressed — was, in fact, not a conspiracy theory. Further, the social distancing recommendations forced on Americans ‘sort of just appeared’ and were likely not based on scientific data,” he added.

What a slimy little weasel. He goes from “I’m the science! What I say goes!” to “I had no knowledge or control of anything at all. Why are you picking on me?”
sort of just appeared
No. There are documented instances of the practice being floated post-SARS.
They didn’t fumble their way through this. They had a playbook and they were following it.
From a tabletop scenario published by Johns Hopkins in 2017 about a coronavirus from southeast Asia: “The WHO, which had declared the SPARS epidemic to be a PHEIC on November 25, was actively engaged in preventing further spread of the disease internationally. However, the WHO’s efforts promoted interventions originally designed for influenza and other similar respiratory pathogens, such as hygiene, social distancing, and isolation of suspected cases, all of which were less effective against SPARS.”
So social distancing didn’t just pop up out of nowhere. It was already a known thing. The six foot rule might have popped up out of nowhere. Other countries had 1-1.5 meters, but even that was arbitrary.
That little fuck is someone I’d pay good money to watch have a struggle session, prompted with cattle prods.
Not a lawyer, but I can see a judge having some control over the scope of remarks. The problem is who decides what qualifies as germane.
I think it would be completely reasonable for Trump or his defense team to bring up Letitia James’ clear personal animus toward him, but I doubt the judge would permit it.
I was looking forward to him going full Pacino.
Not the brightest guy though.
I bet he would admit to ordering the code red.

No mo snow
Vast swaths of the US have been hit with powerful storms, including blizzards that have blanketed parts of the Midwest and Northeast in snow. But something’s amiss: many states accustomed to white winters are now getting more rain than snow.
A new study published on Wednesday shows that the human-caused climate crisis has reduced snowpack in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere in the last 40 years, threatening crucial water resources for millions of people.
It might seem logical that a warmer world would be less hospitable to snow, but the relationship between snow and climate change is complex, and scientists have for many years struggled to make a clear connection between the two.
Part of the problem has been that snowfall is notoriously difficult to measure accurately, and scientific data from ground observations, satellites, and climate models have given contradictory signals on the role of climate change in declining snowpacks. Some areas have even experienced more snow in our warmer world.
Take our word for it. It’s bad. Real bad.
Finally they figured out that climate change may or may not cause more or less snow.
Glad our top scientists are on this one.
Journalistic Style Guide:
Good == weather

Climate Change – It slices, it dices, it juliennes!
We just got some snow in Minnesoda. But it rained a lot in December.
Heard somewhere that rain is far more likely to soak in now and boost water tables than if it had been snow. In the spring, the ground would be frozen and the water would run off to the Mississippi to flood various states (which would also be proof of CLIMATE CHANGE).
An also the annual reminder of the risks of living on a flood plain.
Last winter huge portions of the mountains in Utah, Nevada, and California were a zillion percent over average annual snowpack.
Yes, the reason I go to Florida in the Winter isn’t to get away from the snow in Ohio, it’s to get more snow. Why do you think they call us “snowbirds?” Duh.
Try that link again
I’m guessing that there is more to this story than the journalo is telling us.
So was the real story that the mother was a lazy slob who tried to abuse the system by claiming to need to lactate more than a Wisconsin dairy cow? Or was the worker’s boss some crazy lady who had it out for her?
It’s retail. Why not both ?
It’s pronounced “Ouch! Me Nards!” or “Maynerds” in these parts.
Mona Hemmati, postdoctoral research scientist at the Columbia Climate School, who was not involved with the study, said the research provided “compelling evidence” of how human-caused climate change is influencing snow patterns.
“What makes this study groundbreaking is its approach to isolating the effects of anthropogenic climate change from natural climate variability,” Hemmati told CNN. “This study serves as a crucial reminder of the escalating impacts of climate change and the imperative for immediate and concerted action to address this global challenge.”
I guess they left the part about how they distinguish anthropogenic warming from natural variance out of the story because it’s just so darn obvious.

They’ve shifted the narrative after learning from covid. This is one way they did that whole “apply the tactics from covid to climate change” that Jeff zucker was talking about.
What used to be “we have to distinguish climate from weather” has morphed into “any anomaly is proof positive of climate change”. They learned their lesson from covid. They dont need to show their work to get buy in from a plurality.

Jostling for position
In October, an ADL researcher resigned over Greenblatt’s condemnation of Jewish Americans protesting Israel’s war on Gaza. But the next month, Greenblatt only doubled down on his position, when he said that pro-Palestine activism has “clarified and confirmed that fanatical anti-Zionism from the hard left is as dangerous to the Jewish community as rabid white supremacy from the extreme right.”
Along the way, Greenblatt has demonstrated a hesitance to criticize one of the more appalling antisemites in public life: Elon Musk. The two men’s strange alliance has drawn criticism from Greenblatt’s predecessor, Abe Foxman.
All that to say, the ADL’s new counting method isn’t a huge surprise. But it sure is disappointing to see so many media outlets take the organization’s word at face value.

The fuck making 1099 workers into W2 workers?! Dafuq.
🤬🤬🤬
Next up will be anyone receiving a 1099K. Etsy and EBay workforces to swell by hundreds of thousands.
Gotta capture that $600 the IRS was missing out on.
How many 1099 folks do you think there are? 50M ?
That could be some real money they owe. And when they dont pay, there’s no way those schleps can afford a protracted lawsuit and legal fees when the state goes after them.
Think of all the foreclosures and property the gov’t will grab. Hell, it could become housing for illegal immigrants.
Medical transcription went through this in the mid 2000s, with at least one company that had a lot of contractors and it was required to make them W2 because they treated them like employees (e.g., strict shifts) without the benefits (e.g., hourly wage, breaks). That company really was being an asshole because as 1099s, you can choose to work or not, and when. The income is low enough that that’s MT’s only real perq.
But
Etsy and eBay would close their doors before they’d buckle to that. Maybe they can bear it in one state (California), but nationwide? No.
This is very bad.
I’m largely immune because I get 1099s from a variety of places across three industries, but most of my income is straight revenue, because those people are paying me for a service and have no tax basis to give me a 1099. But there was a time when I worked for one company only, and that company would have just closed up shop rather than comply BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT AFFORD IT.
I don’t EVER want to be an employee again.

OT: haven’t been over to r/japan to see if they’re blaming the lack of proper English education for the JCG/JAL collision. Gonna guess yes, and solution is to pay foreigners without any teaching credentials generous wages and complete freedom of curriculum and classroom. Anything less won’t ensure second language fluency! Coming from redditors who largely don’t have much fluency at all in nihongo or took 2-4 years in college (maybe HS).
I can believe all of it.
I’ve heard Japanese ATC conversations and damn if the accent isn’t hard to grasp even for me with knowledge of both languages. That said I doubt that English is the issue here. They are well versed in ATC English. My bet is tired pilots who were repeatedly flying as quickly as the the regs allowed.
Mind you Japanese conversational English is awful by Asian and global standards because it can’t be taught by native Japanese speakers using Japanese style rote memorization.
My Japanese friends’s grammar proficiency in English blows away mine in Japanese, but her vocabulary and conversational comprehension is like 50% of mine. However, out the two of us together and we can get close to 100% comprehension on any given topic.
To her credit all she does is practice and study conversation with native speakers.
I thought I’d heard that illumination of the control point was out but I wouldn’t be surprised at pilot fatigue. Probably working max or beyond after the earthquake.
I’d agree that English proficiency is pretty bad, especially given the amount of funding and purported priority. But I’m also surprised at how much English signage and speakers I would encounter on trips there. And laugh at predominantly US/ex-US redditors whining about second language ability or how the Japanese schools/system is unfair to their own personal pseudo-vacations.
I hadn’t read that. I read he was told to hold short and sadly didn’t.
My experience with the English signage is mixed. If I didn’t understand Japanese I would certainly feel it’s inadequate. But i don’t feel like it’s their obligation to fix that unless they want to for tourist reasons.
