IFLA: The “Early Spring” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of Jan 28

by | Jan 28, 2024 | IFLA, Musings | 411 comments

For multiple dogs to play together, there needs to be a high level of trust between them.

This week is remarkably non-terrible, if a little on the unfair side. The dominant feature is carrying over from last week — the Venus – Sun – Jupiter bit of peace love and understanding. Groundhog day is a good time to stay home, visit a friend’s home, or change homes. Domestic goodness basically. And while It’s the time for Aquarius, Capricorn is holding on the other good stuff. So if you’re an Aquarius and don’t think this part of the year is going as well as it should, you can blame it on Capricorns.

Aquarius: 3 of Wands reversed – Ennui, overlooking the good things in life.

Pisces: The Hanged Man reversed – Selfishness, crowds, the body politic.

Aries: King of Swords reversed – Authority abused.

Taurus: Ace of Cups – Bounty, literal blessedness, bonus good luck for women.

Gemini: Temperance – Doing the right thing, even if it’s boring.

Cancer: 7 of Cups – shiny distractions, chasing trends, efforts without lasting results.

Leo: Page of swords – Is it incompetence, or actual sabotage?

Virgo: 2 of Cups – Games, play, a journey more difficult than expected.

Libra: 2 of Cups – Agreements sealed, unions blessed, promises made, promises kept.

Scorpio: The Star – Waste, hope, a decision that is critical to solving a problem or making it worse.

Sagittarius: Lots of bad options, no obvious solution to current problems

Capricorn; The Lovers – Bow chicka wow wow.

Sagittarius: Lots of bad options, no obvious solution to current problems

    Woohoo!

  2. DEG

    Nice dog videos.

Is it incompetence, or actual sabotage?

Tell me about it. Sufficiently shitty.

    • R.J.

Jeez yes. I opened a storage cabinet and an avalanche started with a poorly returned tool. After it ended, an old white paint can had broken open on the floor and dumped over everything.
I called a mental break and went for a burger.

      • slumbrew

        Oof.

      • Spudalicious

That’ll get you talking to yourself.

      • Chafed

        Ouch. Sorry R.J.

      • DEG

        Ouch.

        Sorry.

      • R C Dean

I’d probably go with just painting the floor white.

  3. Fourscore

Boys need that same kind of pushing and shoving, both for physical well being and learning to get along with one another. Girls in families with boys learn that
    as well. Bonding and trusting.

  4. Gender Traitor

a decision that is critical to solving a problem or making it worse.

“Maybe if I press THIS button…”

    • Fourscore

You’ve watched me trying to use my phone, haven’t you?

    • Sean

      Just need a bigger hammer.

  5. Sean

    It’s cold and rainy.

Guess I’m doing steaks in the cast iron. 😒

    • slumbrew

You won’t melt – fire up the grill.

(I have a small overhang over the back door and can drag the grill over so I stay dry in these conditions. I won’t judge those of you without overhang privilege).

      • Sean

Already on the stove. No usable overhang.

      • rhywun

        small overhang

I can’t do grilling but my new apt. has windows that flip out which is genius. I was just thinking about that during yesterday’s warm but rainy streak.

I can’t believe I tolerated no awnings or anything similar for more than a decade.

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

I used to use a charcoal grill but switched over to reverse sear in the oven before finishing on one of these. Works best on a gas range, but does fine on my electric.
        https://madeincookware.com/products/carbon-steel-griddle/griddle-nl

It’s a bit pricey but works great. Can cook smash burgers, a bunch of chicken, or multiple steaks at once.

O/T aside to new Glib Cunctator: We’re sorry about the delay in getting your first comment approved, but now you should be able to fully participate in Glib glory! Please come back early and often!

        It’s not a thought, just a sermon.

    • Cunctator

I plan to participate as often as possible. I had to leave earlier while my comment was processing, but thanks for the “Fuck you, Tulpa’s” as well as Mojeaux’s and other’s Welcome.

So just another day in the New World Order

    • rhywun

      Succinctly mysterious.

    w00 h00!

Does this mean and easier time getting my Pinterest pins backed up?

    • Mojeaux

So I downloaded Basilisk browser and paid for a plug-in that will do this automagically. We’ll see if this works.

      • Mojeaux

Yeah, if pin4ever doesn’t, I’ll try that. Still requires Basilisk.

  10. The Late P Brooks

    Just need a bigger hammer.

Exactly. It’ll fit. You’re just not hitting it hard enough.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Does this mean and easier time getting my Pinterest pins backed up?

That, or you’re teed up for Immaculate Conception.

  12. That Guy

Dragged over from last thread^2: I too have noticed a reduction in the number of comments. Just the number not the content. As is obvious from this comment, I don’t read them in “real” time but usually later, hours to days. I wonder if others do that too since I don’t think the last comment in a thread will be noticed or read by many.

As far as the general tone becoming more conservative as opposed to libertarian: that’s probably true. I know I have personally. We all get older and more and more have to deal with “what is” instead of “what should be”. The outside world seems to be accelerating into a collectivist, top down, neo-feudal society and being merely libertarian doesn’t seem oppositional enough I guess. There, now I’ve managed to channel Alex and JI in a single paragraph.

My work, like a lot of you is in technology for a large multi-national corporation. I also have a very lefty spouse. So plainly speaking at home or work is fraught with danger. This place, even if I don’t comment, feels like I belong somewhere, that I’m not alone with these dangerous thoughts.

Anyway, enough said. I have to get to work on a subpanel in my shop so I can finally fire up that TIG welder I bought last year.

    • slumbrew

My work, like a lot of you is in technology for a large multi-national corporation. I also have a very lefty spouse. So plainly speaking at home or work is fraught with danger. My brother

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Yeah, Frau ZWAK is definitely on the left side of things, and, what’s more, works in the ivory tower. There is a lot of times when she is working from home that I put on headphones so as not to go into a screaming fit.

    • Urthona

I’ve been here for a long time and this place has always been a little more right-leaning than your typical libertarian site. But also very smart.

      • Chafed

        I think that’s accurate.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

I think some of the more left leaning bailed around the time of COVIdiocy, as we here were very anti mask and such. I know Juvinal Bluster did, over that exact thing.

      • The Hyperbole

IIRC , JB didn’t bail over Covid/mask thing, he bailed because any criticism of Trump was met with accusations of TDS instead of actual counter argument. It was (and is) very tiresome.

      • rhywun

        met with accusations

From some? I suppose. There is plenty of criticism of Orange here and I don’t sense any hostility over it.

      • juris imprudent

        Ah, we have forgotten LC1789?

      • rhywun

        Yes.

      • Beau Knott

Well, I had until you had to go and bring him up 🙁

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

No, I am pretty sure it was the masking, or lack thereof. But, fuck, I have been wrong before.

      • Lackadaisical

        Juvenile bluster was leftwing?

    • LCDR_Fish

I always see the fun morning comments that I wish I could have responded to – when I’m sitting in the office at 4 PM about to start my shift ;p

      • Urthona

I think morning is most active, and I’m usually late for it too.

    • juris imprudent

that TIG welder I bought last year

Smells like an article to me.

Today is Lily’s third birthday! If nobody shows up in the next six minutes, I’m canceling the shoot and buying birthday steaks.

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

      Happy bday to Lily!

    • Sean

      Woof! 🎂🎈🎉

    • Fourscore

Dog birthdays so she’s really 21? Doing life without parole?

Give her the day off and an extra helping what whatever she likes. I think it’s a rule, somewhere

    • rhywun

      🤘

So cute when she flops on her back for a paws attack.

    • Chafed

Get her the steaks no matter what.

      • Not Adahn

She ate them, then wondered where the rest of her dinner was.

  14. The Late P Brooks

I have to get to work on a subpanel in my shop so I can finally fire up that TIG welder I bought last year.

    Go, team, go!

  15. KK, Plump & Unfiltered

Even though I’m a hot mess, I think I should go to the grocery for some ham so I can make eggs B

    • Suthenboy

Eggs B made for Mrs. Suthenboy yesterday morning. Note: bacon is a decent substitute for ham in said dish.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

I sometimes use bacon, but I like Hollandaise better with ham, for sure.

But now I think I want biscuits and gravy, because I’ve been watching a bunch of British people eating B&G for the first time. But I haz no snausages.

      • Suthenboy

How do y ou make your hollandaise? Toss the double boilers, thermometers and dowsing rods.

2 cup glass measuring cup. Put in one half stick of cold butter. Microwave 20 seconds. Check temp by putting palm on bottom of measure cup. Return to microwave for 5-7 second intervals checking temp each time. When temp gets one or two degrees over body temperature the butter should be all melted or nearly all. Plop in two egg yolks. Whisk vigorously. it it looks broken keep whisking. When it gets creamy put in 1tbs lemon juice..I like mine extra lemony so I put 1-1/2 tbs. A pinch of salt and your desired spice (cayenne, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon or any aromatic). Whisk vigorously.
Perfect hollandaise in under 3 mins when you get the hang of it.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

        3 egg yolks
        A fuckton of lemon juice
        A pinch of salt
        A stick of unsalted butter

Whisk over very low (direct) heat until yolks barely start to thicken. Add butter in ~5-6 pieces, one at a time, melting each piece before adding the next. Stir constantly until desired thickness. Add additional lemon and/or salt after tasting. Add a sprinkle of cayenne.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

        *whisk first 3 ingredients

      • Shpip

Make sure to say a quick prayer of thanks at the end of your meal (you know, a benediction).

Make double sure to serve your breakfast on a 1960s hubcap, preferably from a Cadillac or a Ford Galaxie — polished to a high sheen. Because there’s no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

        SWISS

  16. The Gunslinger

Capricorn; The Lovers – Bow chicka wow wow.

I have 1 word for you. Menopause.

Bow chicka wow wow is not bloody likely around these parts.

    • Mojeaux

      Hey! I resemble that remark!

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Wow, yet another commenter speaking my language.

But, I am an Aquarius, and can only think about it pensively, while gather thoughts for the storm.

  17. The Late P Brooks

    OT: Bentley engine autopsy.

I assume that’s I Do Cars. Watched it last night. I think he is grossly underestimating the interest in, and value of, that motor, even in its blowed up state.

    • DEG

      Yep, it’s I Do Cars.

I could go either way on interest in that engine. I don’t think there are lots of folks modding Bentleys, but there are probably people out there trying to keep them on the road.

  18. LCDR_Fish

Maybe I missed it it AM links, but we’ve got dead troops in Jordan now courtesy of appeasement.

      • juris imprudent

No we have dead troops in Jordan because we can’t keep our dick away from any hornet’s nest.

      • Fourscore

It’s like decoying ducks. Sometimes the decoys get shot too. I don’t like what the US reaction may be. Biden, the Draft Dodger, get his big chance while Trump, the Draft Dodger, can needle him for being weak, while he, Trump, walks away.

China and Russia are watching and enjoying the show.

      • Chafed

Why do we have troops in Jordan? Real question.

      • juris imprudent

Supporting the troops in Syria no doubt.

      • Lackadaisical

        ‘one-way drone’

Is the word suicide too triggering?

    • Urthona

How does this impact the candied almonds?

    • Suthenboy

Fuck. I thought Jordan was the one place that would likely keep the peace.

      • Lackadaisical

Notably no one is claiming the attack originated in Jordan.

    • Lackadaisical

      ‘courtesy of appeasement’

      What appeasement? Iran deal stuff?

I could see that argument, of course, maybe we could just stop having trips everywhere on earth too?

    But I love that song man . . . . but no I won’t link it.

      • Tres Cool

        Meat tenderizer. Duh.

  21. dbleagle

I will not be commenting starting Tuesday for a few days. It will not be because of any disenchantment with the site. I will be in the hospital getting my hip replaced.

Yesterday was my last boat race for probably a month. Flukey Kona winds from the south made it an interesting ride. As is common with the first race of the season, a boat blew out a sail and now the owner will have a new sail for the rest of the season.

During my bed rest period I may actually be able to contribute to the comments in something resembling a timely manner. Not morning comments since I am a 1/4 of the earth behind most of you, but the afternoon comments I may have something.

    • Gender Traitor

Hope it’s smooth sailing (heh!) with your hip replacement! 😁 Take care!

    • kinnath

Good luck. They are getting very good at these. A friend of mine was playing golf again about a month after his.

      • slumbrew

Agreed. Good luck and they are indeed good at this now – a friend was back on his bike 11 days(!) after his replacement.

    • Mojeaux

      Good luck!!!

    • Tres Cool

Wont be long and you’ll have that dip in your hip and the glide in your stride.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

So, he is gonna head off in the mother sailboat to make his connection?

    • Beau Knott

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

      Heal up soon!!!

    • DEG

      Best wishes

    • Fourscore

What all the others said. Could use some of those parts too but I guess I’ll just limp along. I’ll just go fishing instead of walking.

    • Grumbletarian

Wow, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

      • dbleagle

Mahalo all. I had the first replaced on Halloween and now completing the collector’s set 90 days later.

See you back soon, everything is gonna be good.

    • mindyourbusiness

May it go well for you. Mrs. MYB had both knees replaced and was up and walkin’ in a little over a week.

Get well soon buddy. Hip replacements are no fun.

  22. kinnath

Pisces: The Hanged Man reversed – Selfishness, crowds, the body politic.

    That’s deep man, but what does that really mean . . . . .

      “Wannafud?”

      • slumbrew

        “Your mom is pretty hot.”

      • Chafed

        👍

    • Nephilium

      “I’m bringing my girlfriend along.”

This should have been the answer to the second question (from “Panicked Parent”).

      • Tres Cool

Since you linked a vid I thought this would be topical.
        A classic from John Candy.

    • Suthenboy

That these ‘Dear X’ letter exist is another argument that the 19th amendment should be repealed. X is always a woman that idiot herd animals ask for advice on managing the very personal minute details of their lives. Of course X is touted as an expert in sticking her nose in such affairs.
*tongue in cheek (not really) and Gliberinas are exempt of course (really) , but then Gliberinas and true mythical libertarian women are anomalies.

Time to go celebrate Jimmy Carter.

Pouring home brew for the populace at the local brew pub for a few hours.

    Carry on without me.

    • Ted S.

      He finally kicked it?

      • Suthenboy

Of course not. More evidence that only the good die young.

      • rhywun

lol That was my first thought.

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

I was, like, “he kicked the bucket???” I realized you were just referring to celebrating deregulating brewing (so his brother could make beer)

      • Chafed

Thank you for explaining. I totally missed it.

      • kinnath

Correct. Patron Saint of Home Brewers.

  25. Pine_Tree

Regarding not commenting for awhile (not that I was very prolific compared to some of y’all): I was dead for several days, starting in the middle of last week.

Thinking it was norovirus. Our whole technical lead team had our yearly planning face-to-face, with about 18 of us together M-Th. 2 escaped. For the rest, we pretty much universally agreed that it was the sickest we’d ever felt/hurt. The norovirus thing is a guess – one of the guys made the case based on timing and symptoms and seems likely enough.

    • Gender Traitor

Ugh! Hope you’re all feeling much better!

      • Pine_Tree

Getting there. I’m just glad I was one of the ones close to home-base, instead of stuck in a hotel with a 3h flight between me and home. The guys in that situation all had to extend their stay by about 2 days (of just holing up in the hotel alone and semi-dead) instead of handling travel in the middle of major GI issues…

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Well, flying is the shits these days.

I figure this thread is a good place for an astronomy link:

Nasa releases audio of what a black hole ‘sounds’ like

Space, a really big, haunted house…

    • Suthenboy

Another one of those things that we cannot really understand so we use an analogy to things we can understand.
The things we can understand depend very heavily on our means of gathering data (in this case ears) in an environment we evolved to understand.
The environment there is one we did not evolve to understand and has very little in common with here. Combine that with the fact that there is likely a lot of information we dont have about that environment and our understanding of the universe as a whole starts to look like a simple comic book fiction.

    • rhywun

I read that as Gaga. :/

Hello! I’ve been a happy lurker since the TOS days, but in response to recent comments, I will stand up to be counted/officially added to another list. I don’t know how much commenting I will do, but thanks to all of you for helping keep me sane, especially over the last few years. Welcome, Tulpa!

    • Gender Traitor

      Fuck off, Tulpa! 😃

Gee, it feels good to say that again! 😁

      (Welcome!)

Heavens, no. Standards must be maintained.

        Please.

      • slumbrew

        Fine, fine…

      • rhywun

I mean, we just spent the last 24 hours anguishing over why people aren’t feeling welcome here….

      • slumbrew

I assume it’s more confusing than anything.

      • rhywun

Well, people have their sticking points around here.

        That is mine.

      • Mojeaux

I agree with Rhywun, even if he is a Bills fan.

      • juris imprudent

You’re just feeling agreeable because Baltimore doesn’t want to win.

      • Suthenboy

That is just what a Tulpa would say.

Seriously, random stupid thought. Around here irreverence is the word of the day, every day. Smarter people understand that because they also understand their place in things. They realize that no matter how smart they are they are still just not all that.
When you get down to room temperature IQs, say 75-100, moving down the bell curve there is a sharp drop-off in sense of humor. People in that range take themselves far too seriously (I’m looking at you, progs, socialists, outright commies and other assorted herd animals). There is also a sharp increase in collectivist thinking.
        End random stupid thought.
This ball was spinning when I got here and will keep spinning when I am gone. It’s not the world I would have created, but then no one asked me. I cant fix all this. All I can do while I am here is point and laugh.

      • juris imprudent

but then no one asked me

And even if they did, who would want that responsibility?

I’ve been ragged on for not living up to my leadership ability/potential, and I can kinda see it. But why should I have to?

      • Suthenboy

        Good point JI.
Being in charge, being a leader, means everyone else’s problems become your problems. Who needs that shit?

      • Chafed

        Completely agree

    • Spudalicious

      Welcome and fuck off, Tulpa!

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

      YAY! Fuck off, Tulpa!!

      • Suthenboy

it’s good to see a new ‘fuck off Tulpa’. It’s been a while.

    • Mojeaux

      Hello, and welcome!

    • Grumbletarian

Welcome, and please share your opinion from time to time.

    • Jackdaw

Fortunately I know the lore and am honored by all the traditional greetings! I almost asked for a “FO,T”, but didn’t want to seem desperate…

I do see the point of not wanting to scare off new folks who wouldn’t know it comes from a place of friendship, though. I plan to greet newcomers with “This is liberty hall; you can spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard!”

      • Gender Traitor

As you said you were a “long-time lurker,” I figured you would understand. I like your greeting, too. I don’t understand it, but I like it. 😄

      • Jackdaw

It’s from a “Horatio Hornblower-IN SPACE!” scifi series. It’s what you say to let your crewmates know they can speak freely; I’ve understood it to mean “you don’t have to maintain decorum and you can tell it like it is”.

      • slumbrew

        Honor Harrington, I assume.

      • Jackdaw

I got it from the John Grimes stories by A. Bertram Chandler, and suspect it may have been in general use by merchant mariners which would also get you Heinlein!

      • Beau Knott

I first encountered it in Heinlein, way back when.

      • mindyourbusiness

Thanks for that; couldn’t remember which author wrote it. May have to dig out my old Chandler paperbacks..

        Welcome!

      • Suthenboy

Jackdaw is hailing what I mentioned earlier: irreverence.

    • DEG

      Welcome!

    • R.J.

Welcome Tulpa! It was getting lonely here. Bring more!

  29. creech

Re “That Guy” post above. By a certain senior age it might be better to become more outspoken a libertarian supporting “what should be.”. We don’t want to give encouragement to the authoritarians that opposition has collapsed or acquiesced to the “correctness” of their ideology.

    • rhywun

I thought bitter cynicism increased with age.

    • slumbrew

      I’ve been thinking about that a bit since i said that I’m in the same boat;

that’s not really true – I’m in no “danger” at work but i wouldn’t be inclined to talk politics at work regardless of the political leanings.

Home is a bit more fraught but that’s really just me avoiding arguments based on emotion. I had a go-round back when Mass was voting to force bathroom use over declared gender.

Talking about the principle of freedom of association didn’t make much of a dent in “but that would be mean!”

We’re in an “agree to disagree” detente but I’m sure we’ll get into things again in the future. At least she grasps that people she otherwise likes can have good-faith objections to things.

      • Ted S.

The mean ones are the people who want to use the state to bully people into doing what they want.

      • slumbrew

Well, yes, but that still doesn’t overcome her emotionally-based position.

      • Ted S.

Tell her she’s got the wrong people being mean.

Granted, you’ll spend the night on the couch, which is somehow not mean.

      • Lackadaisical

Unless I’m truly in the wrong I’d never do this. If she’s upset, she can sleep on the couch..*shrug*

      • slumbrew

That’s the way it goes here.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

“Talking about the principle of freedom of association didn’t make much of a dent in “but that would be mean!””

Yep. And this points to one of the areas that conservatives and libertarians just don’t understand about the left in general. Much of what they do isn’t about being evil, it is about feelings, and what is supposedly “right” and not “heartless”. Of course, this often leads to perverse incentives, but much of what they want started from a place of good intentions and areas that really did need change.

    • juris imprudent

or acquiesced to the “correctness” of their ideology.

A multi-pronged legal attack under way by Elon Musk, large corporations, business groups and anti-union litigators threatens to “raise havoc” with US labor law and hobble a resurgent labor movement, according to experts.

So far efforts to scale back or undermine workers’ rights through the US courts have centered on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) – the US top workplace watchdog and overseer of union elections. But other laws – including trademark and property rights statutes – are also being used.

Both Musk and Starbucks are pursuing cases that would undermine the NLRB.

    ——-

“This is one of the most audacious and bold attempts to reverse the decisions of the 1930s and the way in which American labor law has operated for nearly 90 years,” said William Gould IV, Charles A Beardsley professor of law, emeritus, at Stanford Law School and chairman of the NLRB from 1994 to 1998. “This would raise havoc with the effective administration of labor law in our country which is designed to be for the benefit of workers and the collective bargaining process.”

Oh, horror. Taking the government’s thumb off the scale?

  37. The Gunslinger

I remember around the time I signed up with you reprobates, Mojeaux had a list of icebreaker/get to know you questions for new tulpi.

With the flood of new commenters this weekend, it might be helpful to resurrect that list. What say you Mojeaux?

    • Mojeaux

Good gravy, your remembery is better than mine. I forgot I ever did such a thing. Lemme see if I can find it. Meanwhile, the most important question:

      Chiefs or Ravens?

      • slumbrew

        Meteor.

      • Mojeaux

        Shush, you.

      • Grumbletarian

        Yes, please.

      • rhywun

I don’t think you want to hear my answer to that one.

      • The Gunslinger

Well, I am wearing a Roquan Smith jersey at the moment. It has a Bears logo on it but I guess I’m rooting for Roquan myself.

      • Mojeaux

        Haterz. I’mma shake it off.

      • The Gunslinger

I’m pretty sure I signed up prior to Trump’s election in 2016, so the list would have been around 2015 or earlier.

      • Mojeaux

We’ve only been around since 2017 and I didn’t start commenting until 2018.

      • The Gunslinger

        So much for my memory.

      • The Gunslinger

Now that you say that, I do recall following the comments over at TOS on election night 2016. I looked in my profile and didn’t see a sign up date, so I don’t know when it was.

      • Mojeaux

I dropped in at TOS one day, wondered where all the good commenters went, scoured the comments until I found the dude who would post the walls of text (he was here for a while). He said something about the Glibbening and I followed the sparse breadcrumbs.

Anyway, I know Gilmore got a job that he said would require him to drop all political commenting anywhere, especially here, so he bid us adieu.

    • slumbrew

My goal is to owe them as much as possible, short of owing a penalty.

But $2 back is damn good.

      • Gender Traitor

as much as possible, short of owing a penalty

That, and/or having the Feds start pestering you for quarterly payments.

    • Tres Cool

      • slumbrew

You gotta pay 100% of last year’s tax or 90% of this year’s tax – if you’re increasing each year you can hit that 90% figure.

I’ve been closer to break even but love to owe a bit.

  39. UnCivilServant

Apparently, solder only ever sticks to solder and a soldering iron. Two things it will never adhere to are eletrical leads and solding pads on a PCB.

    • UnCivilServant

So, does anyone have any suggestions for getting the solder to stick to the pad instead of trying to climb the iron?

      • Lackadaisical

        Git gud?

        Did you preheat the pad?

    • Tres Cool

Flux is your friend, my friend. Particularly when tinning (soldering) the ends of leads (wires).

      • UnCivilServant

How do you get it into the holes in the PCB?

      • Tres Cool

In my experience, practice and a whole lot of “solder bridges”. Solder wick is your friend for cleaning up.
I cant stand listening to that Louis Rossman guy, but the soldering skills he shows on cam are some of the best (by hand). If you watch, go back to his older videos of board level repair. He’s not proselytizing as much.

      • UnCivilServant

Actually, I realized I could use a toothpick to scrape the flux onto the surface and the heat from the iron made it flow where I wanted it.

And you are absolutely right, the moment I started fluxing the leads, the solder beads formed almost automatically.

      • Tres Cool

I’ve done a whole lot of soldering and screwed up a lot. Specially board-level repair. It just takes practice.

I especially like it if I can make lots of loud “bangs” in a row without reloading.

My father was unable to watch Niners games because of the 1957 playoffs where they blew a 17 point lead to the Lions at Kezar Stadium. He’d get too nervous thinking they’d let him down no matter what kind of lead they had. Too bad he wasn’t around to see this.

I cleaned up the solder connections that were wonkiest from before, and the project passed all the tests. But I’ve run into an odd situation where the tip of the soldering iron no longer gets hot enough to melt solder, even when just directly pushed into the end of the wire.

Any clue why? I did change tips twice, after the first tip change, I no longer had enough heat at the end of the tip to melt the solder.

    • Plinker762

Newly installed tip never worked? Does it get hot but just not hot enough? Hard to troubleshoot without knowing make and model.

Sounds similar to an old tip when a black oxide coating builds up and acts as an insulator.

      • UnCivilServant

After the first change, the tip got hot, but the tip of the tip did not. When I changed it the second time, I noticed that the body of the tip had gone blue, which had not happened on the one they’d had on it from the factory. After I went back to the one they’d initially had on from the factory, the tip of the tip didn’t get hot enough to melt solder (but did sizzle flux). I have used steel wool to remove a dark material from the factory installed tip, but I have not checked to see if the body there also turned blue (there’s a shroud that covers most of the piece)

I do not know the exact model, it was part of a kit from Arduino.

OK. Had to take a couple of minutes just now to refill the cats’ food dispenser to forestall a full-scale revolt. How goes it with you?

      • UnCivilServant

        So far so good.

The lavender hasn’t sprouted, but it’s got some more time before I have to give up on it (18-30 days germination). I’m most of the way through the soldering projects that came with the Arduino. I got derblinkenlights to work on it last night, and managed to dump the memory from an unexpected microprocessor that arrived while I was working on the soldering. (Unexpected in that I’d expected the socket on the board I’d ordered to be unpopulated, but it had come with a chip in it containing demo code. A chip with 4x the ram and 16x the flash storage of those I planned to use the board for)

      • Gender Traitor

Did you figure out what was wrong with the tip of your soldering iron and/or get it heating up sufficiently?

      • UnCivilServant

        I have not.

I needed to get sleep so I could arrive here at my cube on time this morning.

      • UnCivilServant

In fact, There were other things I disliked about that iron, so I’ve been fighting the impulse to use this as an excuse to buy a different one…

      • Gender Traitor

Well, if it doesn’t work well… I’d think having a tip that won’t melt the solder limits your ability to do fine detail work.

Like all things of State power, there is a process for the government (local/state/Federal) to exercise that power and they just step around it because using it would actually be icky. Instead they rely on people to still have a general sense that police officers are good and their intentions are noble. Why you want criminals to roam freely Stinky?

Good morning, ‘patzie! I feel worse for the Lions fans (Gunslinger? Any others?)

      • The Gunslinger

I was only marginally rooting for the Lions. I grew up a Lions fan but finally figured out the pattern where they suck you in and then crush your soul so I stopped caring. I officially renounced any remaining fanhood when they gave that moron Matt Millen a contract extension. A few years ago I decided to root for the Chicago Bears. They’re actually geographically closer to me.

    Good morning!

Too late to reply directly to KK, but Counter Cafe in Austin uses pastrami on their Eggs Benny, and it’s faboo.

    • Gender Traitor

      Good morning, NA!

On the off chance I’m ever in Austin, might that cafe sub corned beef for the pastrami? I like the taste of pastrami, but it gives me a terrible bellyache. 😖

      • Not Adahn

They are a small place. They may or may not have corned beef available. If they do, they will definitely substitute it, it’s the kind of place where they do that sort of thing. For example: was there once, and a customer asked them to drizzle blueberry pancake batter int the deep fryer to make a sort of funnel-cake thingy. And they did it.

      • Not Adahn

        They’ve expanded!

        https://www.countercafe.com/menu

When I was there, they had one 20 seat location. Six of the seats were a picnic table outside.

      • Ownbestenemy

Oooh, I have a brisket flat that is screaming at me to corn it! I was waiting for St. Patricks day, but now I want some corned beef.

  60. Not Adahn

So my “serious” gun club has managed to fill two squads at the area match in July. Which is fairly baller.

I’ll be working it, so I won’t get the chance to shoot with them. This match is being run by/at SIG, and it’s frisking amazing how smoothly a match can run when an actual 9-5 employee is given managing it as one of their responsibilities.

    • UnCivilServant

Oh, Since you’ve brought up the topic, recently, a lunch conversation with work friends went to the pistol permitting process (it was a tangent off of some other topic and I didn’t bring it up) where I managed to mention that I was looking for character references so I could file my paperwork, and no one had any odd reactions, so I might have one or even two there.

I am back to looking at the actual process and paperwork and getting daunted at figuring out what I’m supposed to do. You mentioned that my local PD’s web page was linking to the old form, which has me on edge where I’m not sure I won’t get stuck where the PD wants the old form, but the county wants the new, so I get rejected either way.

      • Not Adahn

I’d contact the PD and see if they’re IT guy just hasn’t gotten around to updating the website. In my case, it’s the Sheriff’s department, not the PD, and they have a dedicated admin for the process who is very helpful. No idea how hostile Rensselaer is.

      • UnCivilServant

I have no idea how hostile Rensselaer is either. I’m on the Albany side of the Hudson, so I have to deal with Albany county 🙁 (By literally half a mile)

I might be pestering you to ask if you’d be a character reference. I haven’t gotten the rest of my ducks in a row yet.

      • Not Adahn

Sure. You’ve been very canny in hiding your homicidal intentions (strangling gloves aside) so I could honestly write you one.

      • Not Adahn

Also: The Albany DA is a complete TDS frothing-at-the-mouth political hack. Fortunately, I don’t think his office is involved in the process.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m pretty sure it’s just the PD/Sheriff, the State Troopers, and a Judge. (The troopers run the background checks, I know someone who works in that department, and her father is one of my potential character references)

      • Not Adahn

Also, Mike has been saying this season’s Kayaderosseras shoots will be allowing PCCs.
