Her Webdomness called in sick for the big website upgrade thingy tonight.

Probably for the best since you don’t want someone doing that type of thing if they don’t feel up to it.

So here you have an open thread.

      *general jubilation ensues*

      Hope you feel better soon webdom. Thanks for keeping us in the loop Tonio.

      • Gender Traitor

        ^What Lack said!

    • Tonio

      I’m with The Hyperbole.

      I want a refund, dammit!

      And for those kids to get off my lawn.

      • TARDis

        The next thing you know, you’ll be expecting grown-ass men to pull their damned pants up too.

    • Chafed

      Lol

    • Brochettaward

      How bout dem Browns?

      • The Hyperbole

        They had a good season and Myles Garrett was the defensive player of the year so that’s nice.

        And I don’t really follow this stat because it’s kinda stupid but I hear they firsted the fuck outta shit all year long.

  2. Playa Manhattan

    I don’t need any of this nonsense in my browsing history.

    • Spudalicious

      FED!!!

    • Pat

      There’s a name I haven’t seen in a long while. How the hell are you?

      • Playa Manhattan

        Great. My kids are older and I’m older, and Spud is absolutely a Fed. I even have evidence of him crossing state lines!

      • Gustave Lytton

        Did you finally get reliable Internet so no need to drop anymore?

      • Pat

        Glad to hear you’re well.

    • R C Dean

      Good to hear from you, Playa.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

      Don’t hate the Playa, hate Cal.

  3. Lackadaisical

    Pulling from uncivil’s post:

    “First was the ignorance of the archaeological community at large given the small amount of collected data.”

    This had been bothering me lately. While the discovery of the Harappan civilization is relatively recent, there has now been plenty of time to thoroughly explore these sites, and even make them tourist destinations, yet that hasn’t occurred.

    There’s all sorts interesting questions left about these people but somehow no effort that has been made aware of to interested lay audiences. What’s the hold up?

    I’m regards the detailed planning of sites, this never happens without a strict hierarchy, which means somebody in charge. In modern India, homes with courtyards are common for the well to do. And even their servants might live there with the master of the household.

    The idea that the Harappan civilization is an outlier should require extraordinary evidence.

    • rhywun

      What’s the hold up?

      My thought as I was reading that is someone powerful doesn’t want the information to be revealed, for whatever reason.

    • Tonio

      We could use a nice ‘splainer piece on this…

      “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

      Great, now I’m on record agreeing with bro.

      “Foreign power who will work you to death and rip your heart out, or foreign power who will work you to death…”

      The Spanish didn’t do that so much, look at the mix of people left over. The lower class is worth more alive than dead.

      • UnCivilServant

        There was still a lot of attrition under the early Spanish regime, though admittedly, not all of that was intentional.

  4. Aloysious

    Did the Bro First so hard he caused a Firstquake? Is that what really happened?

    • Brochettaward

      I’ve been incredibly busy Firsting to prune the Firstlines in existence. It is genocidal in effect, but it must be done to protect the one true Firstline in which we inhabit.

      • Aloysious

        Thank Badness. If at First you don’t succeed, persist, or something.

  5. Vida Hobo

    Since it’s an open thread. I’m a long time lurker and managed to doxx myself on the first Zoom I jumped in. Didn’t realize what a breach of etiquette it was. Wanted to apologize. I really enjoy reading the comments. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

    • Tonio

      Fuck off, Tulpa!

      • Vida Hobo

        Gracias, your bearness. Just a case of Dad had been drinking and kid used computer last.

    • Brochettaward

      Bow before me and despair because you are not me.

    • Lackadaisical

      I think the reaction is mostly for your own protection.

      Don’t need to make the Feds’ jobs any easier.

    • Spudalicious

      Welcome! Post early, post often! And fuck off, Tulpa!

    • Jackdaw

      Lurkerz4Life!

    • db

      Sort of a breech birth for a new member…

      Fuck off, Tulpa!

    • Cunctator

      Hey, look

      Three of us Tulpae on one thread.

      • Fourscore

        Reviews the questionnaires. Hmm, every thing seems to be in order.

        Welcome aboard!

      • Ownbestenemy

        There goes the neighborhood

  6. whahappan

    Welcome to the newcomers. Although I wasn’t present for your doxing, I can confirm the concern was for you, not any breech of etiquette.

  7. whahappan

    Oh, and fuck off, Tulpa, and cut spending!

  8. Sir Digby Classic

    What’s all this mishegoss about lurkers??

      • Sir Digby Classic

        I know, right?? So much about lurkers in such a….pfffft thread.

        SMH

    • Jackdaw

      The Loyal Lurker Legion is on the march! I just realized just how long I’ve been vicariously enjoying the company of the Glibs; I discovered TOS around the time of Bush v Kerry (really 20 years?!) and followed the cool kids here. At least a few of us have disenlurked the last few days.

      • Sir Digby Classic

        disenlurked

        Perfectly cromulent word. Consider my spirit embiggened by your post.

  9. UnCivilServant

    (-.-)

    How is it ZIF sockets are more expensive than the ICs I’d be protecting?

    • UnCivilServant

      Okay the cheap chinese knockoffs do have a per unit cost below the ICs, but the ones I’d be willing to trust cost more than the chips.

      • UnCivilServant

        I had way too much glee from writing a program that switches from the green LED to the red LED when a button was pressed.

        Sure, the microcontroller is overkill, since I could have used a transistor or relay if the objective were just to switch the LED. But it was figuring out how to code for the chip.

        #include

        #define LED1 BIT0
        #define B1 BIT3
        #define LED2 BIT6
        /**
        * main.c
        */
        int main(void)
        {
        WDTCTL = WDTPW | WDTHOLD; // stop watchdog timer
        P1OUT |= LED1;
        P1OUT |= LED2;
        P1DIR = LED1 + LED2;
        while(1){
        if((P1IN & B1) == 0){
        P1OUT &= ~LED1;
        P1OUT |= LED2;
        }else{
        P1OUT |= LED1;
        P1OUT &= ~LED2;
        }
        }
        }

      • UnCivilServant

        Dammit, I forgot wordpress eats the whitespace.

      • Rat on a train

        It’s a conspiracy against Python.

      • UnCivilServant

        Python uses way too many resources for a chip with 1KB of storage and 128 Bits of RAM.

  10. hayeksplosives

    Great to see old friends of yore and new lurkers and commenters!!

    Welcome to the community.

    And Fuck off, Tulpa!

    • Ted S.

      How’s your foot?

      • hayeksplosives

        Foot is OK! Sprained, not broken. (Shaken, not stirred?)

        Doc gave me a note for work saying only 10% walking/standing for a couple of weeks, no heavy lifting etc.

        Wearing a goofy walking boot, alternate hit and cold packs.

        Longer term referral to orthodox for arthritis in ankle. No hurry.

        Interesting part was a prescription for vitamin C, 1000mg 3X daily. She said it’s very important for cellular regrowth!!

        Okie dokie then.

      • Sir Digby Classic

        Thank God for small mercies, as it were. Although, it would seem any hobbies involving warehouse work are on hold.

        Do carry on taking it easy, and enjoy the vitamin C*.

        *What–am I supposed to tell her to hate it?

    • Sir Digby Classic

      old friends of yore

      Much like the fabled “apothecary tables of the white plains”, eh?

      ;)~

  11. robodruid

    Just glad the website is still here.
    Very happy to see old faces and new ones as well.

    • Gender Traitor

      Hey, was just thinking about you, ‘bodru! Hope things are getting better for you and yours (including all the critters.)

      • robodruid

        Hey GT thank you for thinking about me.
        Its been grim. The legal troubles have been oppressive on my spouse.

      • Gender Traitor

        😟 I’m so sorry! I hope things turn around ASAP!

    • hayeksplosives

      Kick it off? Dude, I just went back to bed!!

      But good morning, early birds.

      • Sean

        Glad yer foot ain’t broken. You’ll be kicking ass again real soon.

  12. Fourscore

    Damn, things get started early ’round here.

    Don’t y’all know what time it is? Coffee time? OK, I’ll stay up.

    • Fourscore

      I’m sure there are other countries willing to buy the sanctioned product. Politics/economics always seems to result in higher prices to the consumer.

    • prolefeed

      Took a screenshot of the article, sent it to Mrs. Prole, with this text:

      “Sooo … much … irony. 😂🤣”

      Waiting for her to wake up and engage in massive doublethink about how the two things are totes different.

      • Gender Traitor

        Now, there’s a man who laughs in the face of danger! (And good morning!)

    • Grosspatzer, Superstar

      Thank you, ROAT. Laughing hysterically in the morning is good for you.

    • R.J.

      Are we going to impose sanctions on ourselves then?

  13. Beau Knott

    Mornin’ all!

    • Gender Traitor

      Good morning, Beau, Sean, hayek (if you’re still awake,) 4(20), Roat, Derpy, ‘bodru, Diggy (😃), and U!

      (Better quit and post before someone else shows up!)

      • Gender Traitor

        Crap! And somewhere upthread, good morning TARDy!

      • Gender Traitor

        ::checks timestamps of earlier comments:: Glad to see you, but how on earth are you awake??

      • UnCivilServant

        I slept through the afternoon and woke up at 1-2 am.

      • Gender Traitor

        OK, that makes sense. Whatever works!

      • UnCivilServant

        I’m not sure it works. But I do have a half day at work today.

        Unfortunately, it’s the middle half.

      • Fourscore

        Morning GT et al, and a fine morning it is.

        I’m already thinking about a nap.

      • Gender Traitor

        That just means it’s time for more coffee!

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        It is always time for more coffee.

      • Ownbestenemy

        I forgot my coffee, so its tea time.

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        Playing golf, are you?

      • Ownbestenemy

        While I am a Fed, I cannot swing the clubs worth a damn.

      • TARDis

        *waves*

        Good morning, Glibnation.

  14. Grosspatzer, Superstar

    Mornin’, reprobates! Welcome to all the new Tulpae, I see Sam Houston is among us.

    • Gender Traitor

      Good morning, ‘patzie, SS!

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        Hey!

        patzie, SS

        Not really, but I love the uniforms. Black is beautiful.

      Exhibit 1,000,000 on why hate crimes laws are retarded.

    • Grosspatzer, Superstar

      Mrs. Patzer just got a jury duty notice, should be fun. If I am ever called, I’ll not be convicting anyone of a “hate crime”. I am pretty sure no prosecutor can explain how xe knows what someone is thinking, and even if xe could, why that matters.

      • Ownbestenemy

        Middle teen got his first jury summons. He is less than thrilled.

      • R C Dean

        ”I am pretty sure no prosecutor can explain how xe knows what someone is thinking”

        Most of the time, they tell you, which means that it is often possible to determine someone’s motivations pretty easily.

        Now, whether they should be punished more or less depending on their motivation is a different question.

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        Most of the time, they tell you, which means that it is often possible to determine someone’s motivations pretty easily.

        True dat. The action is what is relevant. I’d be doing serious time if it were possible to read my mind.

    • Fourscore

      Is it crime to hate Satan? Is it a crime to hate crime? Should the government be encouraging religion or anti-religion?

      /Confused in Podunkville

    • Not Adahn

      Who would be the victim here? The putting-up-statues demonization of Satanists don’t believe in Satan, so how could they be the target of hate? Can I sue for second-hand hate crimes too?

      • Ownbestenemy

        That is the question the State asked itself before writing in hate-crime laws so they don’t have to ask those questions anymore.

  15. The Gunslinger

    Hope Webdom feels better soon. Thanks to all that are working on the upgrade and keeping this place going in general. It is appreciated.

    Have a good one all.

    • Gender Traitor

      You do the same, ‘slinger!

  16. Derpetologist

    I have a new routine going where I get up around 5, get a 2-mile walk in, and have breakfast. That’s better than sleeping in til 2 or later after staying up all night. Day 2 of sobriety. Had a 6-day streak earlier this month. My current goal is 10 days. If I stay under 2 standard drinks in a day, I count that as a win as well.

    The less I drink the better. At this point, I’m just trying to avoid indulging like Ric Flair. He generally drank at least 12 beers and 5 cocktails per day. My long-term average since leaving the Army is about 4 beers per day.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtTaJAxrqf4

    • Gender Traitor

      You can do it, Derpy! One day at a time. One minute at a time, if necessary.

      TT (Mr. GT) has been sober for well over 40 years.

      • Fourscore

        Me too.

        It’s been a great ride. Wake up in the morning, feeling GREAT! and being able to remember who I offended the night before.
        The first 3 weeks of sobriety were the toughest. I learned my kids weren’t too bad, no worse than I’d been. I enjoyed going to work or not going to work.

        I can be a jerk without drinking and save the money. I jokingly say I quit for my health, Mrs F said she’d kill me if I didn’t. Maybe it wasn’t a joke.

      • Gender Traitor

        ::fist bumps 4(20)::

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        Can confirm. A t-shirt I once wore described me perfectly.

        “Instant asshole. Just add alcohol. “

      • Derpetologist

        As heard at a bus terminal: I’m allergic to liquor. It makes me break out in handcuffs.

        I’ve been in the back of a cop car 3 times, but I was in handcuffs only 1 of those times.

      • Derpetologist

        Amen to that. Evan told me about his experience in detox. Fuck that noise.

        At DLI, I drank 8 pints of beer per week usually, 4 on Friday night and 4 on Saturday night. If I could get back to that level, hallelujah. Of course, it’s hard to binge drink when you have to get up at 0345 5 days per week.

        Most losses appear to have occurred in the early days of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

    • Grosspatzer, Superstar

      Hang in there, dude. It really does get better.

    • Not Adahn

      Yes, there’s a certain point where it becomes your new (healthier) normal. And then you can discover other underlying issues that had been masked by the earlier ones.

      • Fourscore

        We all have our crosses, how we bear them has a range of differences.

    • R C Dean

      Excellent.

      Very few people are genuine nocturnists who can stay up ‘til the early morning and sleep until noon or afternoon. That’s probably as important a habit to break as cutting back on your drinking.

      • Derpetologist

        I spent 2.5 years on the night shift in the Army/NSA, then another year on the night shift in the golf cart factory. It’s easier to sleep when it’s dark and everyone else is asleep.

  17. Derpetologist

    Random night thought: For a 4-bit key, the keyspace is 2^4 = 16, but only 6 of those keys contain an equal number of 0s and 1s. From that, I can infer that for a key with n-bits, the number of keys with an equal number of 0s and 1s approaches the square root of 2^n for large values of n. I’m still working on a proof for that.

    The Germans had a cipher machine called the Lorentz with 502 cams. Each cam had 2 possible positions giving a keyspace of 2^502. In practice, they found that a secure key had an equal mix of cams in either position.
