PART II
ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS
71A
S E P T E M B E Rย 1 9 2 9
SCHOOL STARTED WITHOUT Marina, which made her very sad. Sheโd hated school and she had a nice tutorโtwo now, with the history teacher who taught Marina all about significant women in history. Trey had hired Miss Stanley with the express intent of preparing Marina for being a female in a male-dominated world, and what women before her had done in the midst of men who doubted them. She had even taken Marina on a field trip to see the female municipal judge preside over her courtroom. Miss Stanley started out arriving in time for dinner, but for some reason Miss Stanley and Mr. Carville did not get along. Soon Miss Stanley waited to arrive until Mr. Carville left for his barbershop quartet. Other than that, Marina was content with private tutors and was happy not to be subject to the likes of Ruthie. The only reason she missed school was because she missed Dot, and she knew Dot was having a hard time with the other girls.
Somehow, Dot had convinced Gio to go behind her fatherโs back to meet her after school just before Marina took her to Kresgeโs. Marina didnโt know how she always ended up doing what Dot wanted her to do, but when she didnโt, it was only because it contradicted something Trey wanted. In this case, he didnโt care whether Gio and Dot sneaked around or not, but Gio set limits: Marina had to be present, it could only be a half-hour chat on the sidewalk in front of the school, in full view of everyone. And he only agreed because Marina was not at school to share the burden of the popular girlsโ derision. His presence after school reminded them that Dot had a beauโa seemingly prosperous man with a respectable occupation, who was not the sort of man to do indecent things with his girl.
Since Marina had to be present and Marinaโs Monday, Wednesยญday, and Friday afternoons and evenings were spoken for, that left Tuesday and Thursday that Dot got to see Gio. While this was fine the first couple of times, Dot got impatient and wanted more, as usual, which Gio would not give her unless Marina managed to rearrange her tutoring schedule.
โDot, I canโt!โ Marina whispered hotly over their table at Kresgeโs. It was the third Tuesday of school, which meant it had taken Dot all of two weeks to be fed up with what little attention she could get from Gio.
โMarina, donโt you see? If we donโt go to Kresgeโs together on those days, I donโt have a chance to talk to Gio!โ
โI know, butโโ
โCanโt you get your tutors to change their schedules? Youโre up all night long. Surelyโโ
โNo! I want to graduate and Trey wantsโโ
โFor me?โ she pled. โPlease?โ
Trey wanted the number one spot in Marinaโs affections. She still didnโt know why there couldnโt be two lists, but Dot seemed to want to see Gio more than she wanted to spend time with Marina.
โMarina!โ Dot barked when Marina said this. โYouโve already left me!โ
โIt wasnโt my fault,โ she said weakly.
โI am all alone at school. Please donโt make me be alone after school too.โ
โYouโre already sneaking around to see Gio for the half hour I give you!โ Marina blurted, angry and hurt, feeling unwanted. โJust keep doing that! Your mother wonโt know that difference.โ
โShe will too! She doesnโt know what happens between school letting out and my getting home from Kresgeโs! Besides which, thatโs Gioโs decision, and he wonโt do it without you there to chaperone!โ
โThen talk him into it! Heโs your man, and women do what their men say. Mine says Iโm to be tutored and I want to be.โ
That was when Trey laid down rule number threeโto Gio and Dot, whom he summoned to the Dunham home that Saturday morning to do it.
โYou better get your little bitchโโ
Dot, from her spot on Marinaโs sofa, gasped.
โTrey, donโt call her that.โ
โโoff Marinaโs back about her studies. Even if Marina canโt see beyond tomorrow, I can, and Iโm not gonna tolerate Dot blaming Marina for abandoning her. I despise female politics and Dotโs got itโ Dot, siddown and shut up. Iโve had it with you doing everything you can to turn Marina against me, then turning on her for something thatโs not her fault.โ
โYouโre an evil man!โ she screeched.
That was a fair accusation.
โHeโs not evil,โ Gio said wearily, his finger and thumb in his eyeballs.
โI donโt give a good goddamn whether you think Iโm evil or not. My wife is hurtinโ anโ I ainโt puttinโ up with it any longer.โ
โTrey,โ Gio said calmly, โDotโs also hurting. Her heartโs broken in two different ways, sheโs lonely, and the ridicule she has to put up with at school makes her and Marinaโs tiff look like a happy day at Fairyland.โ Marina took Dotโs hand in hers. Ruthie and her crew were vicious and already three weeks into the school year, Dot was worn down. โThatโs the only reason I agreed, to take some heat off. She doesnโt even have her little puppy dogs anymore because they know who she belongs to and they arenโt going to cross me. Sheโs not any less angry at me, but I understand. Look at it from Dotโs point of view for once, will you?โ
โThen find another way to sneak around Albright or elope with her.โ
Marina and Dot gasped as one. โElope?!โ they squeaked.
Trey ignored them. โSheโll settle down when youโre fucking her regularlyโโ Dot whimpered. โโand has about as much time as Marina does.โ
โSheโs not that willful.โ
Trey then glared at Dot, who met it defiantly, but she was trembling. Sheโd never seen Trey during one of his full-blown rants. It occurred to Marina that Treyโs rants had never really bothered her. He was honest and open, nothing hidden behind polite silence. His opinion of her as a good wife versus loose woman was important to her, and she knew he would let her know the second he started seeing her that way.
โYou take all that bravado and put it where your mouth is,โ he snarled at Dot. โPackinโ heat but donโt think to use it when you need to. Takinโ your mad out on Marina instead of your daddy because heโs the one got this all tied up. Ainโt meโโ Now Marina winced. He was really mad. โAinโt Gio. Sure ainโt Marina.โ
โButย โฆย โ Dot protested weakly.
โBut what!โ Trey demanded. โMarinaโs gonna get her education anโ I ainโt lettinโ you guilt her out of it. So run away with Gio or shut up, take your half hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Gio, and cโmon over here for tutoring if you wanna see Marina so bad.โ
What hurt Marina the most was that Dot wouldnโt. And while Marina appreciated that Trey was trying to protect her, she knew he really couldnโt do anything about it.
โI am not going behind Albrightโs back any more than I already am,โ Gio said testily. โYou talk to him. If Marinaโs hurt feelings are that important to you, youโll sing my praises to hell and back.โ
โYou still work in a cathouse!โ Trey roared. โAnd you still wonโt change your name to something not Italian! This is your problem and I ainโt lettinโ it become Marinaโs problem! Dotโs gotta decide this. She got two clear solutions, although Iโll allow as how neitherโs perfect. Too bad. Marina gettinโ the shit beat out of her because youโnโme wanted that speak wasnโt exactly perfect either.โ
Gio winced. Dot swiped her cheek and squeezed Marinaโs hand.
โGio, get back to the speak. Dot, go home. Iโm done. You two get this settled between you and leave Marina out of it or Iโll cut you off for good and Iโll tell Albright whatโs been goinโ on.โ
Trey was still in the living room when Marina returned from taking Dot home. She sat on the sofa beside Trey and stared blankly out the window. She didnโt move when Trey pulled her into his side and pressed his mouth on her temple. โIโm sorry, Sugga.โ
She didnโt know which thing he was apologizing for, but she said, โThank you.โ
โYou didnโt put up as much of a fuss as I thought you would.โ
She shrugged listlessly. โSheโs mad because sheโs not at the top of my list, soย โฆย congratulations. I guess. Except sheโs not on anybodyโs list now, except Ruthieโsโโ
โWhoโs Ruthie again?โ
โThe girl who always taunted us the most. She has a large following. Dot and I only had each other, so school must be torture for Dot.โ
โWhatโs Ruthieโs last name?โ he purred.
Oh, boy. She shouldโve known. Tell him or not? There was some dark part of Marina that came out when she was hurt so badly she could barely stand it, and she couldnโt bring herself to try to forestall whatever retribution her gangster husband wanted to dish out. โRamey.โ
So Marina wasnโt surprised when, Tuesday, after she parked in front of Paseo High School and alit to keep Gio company while they waited for dismissal, Ruthie and company trod down the stairs as soberly as if they were at a funeral. They tried to slide past Marina and Gio without attracting their attention, but that was impossible.
Marina said nothing, but Gio said, โHullo, ladies,โ so mockingly they flinched. โYour daddies got the message, I see.โ
They all broke out into a run.
She also was not surprised to see Dot gaily clipping down the stairs, as light as ever, and her puppy dogs watching her. A third looked resentful, a third looked wistful, and a third looked terrified.
โGio!โ she squealed and threw herself into his arms, getting a long, lusty kiss for her efforts. Marina almost rolled her eyes.
โHad a good day?โ he teased.
โI donโt know what you did,โ she gushed to Gio as she threw herself at Marina, โbut it worked like a charm!โ
โHe and Trey went to Ruthieโs father,โ Marina said matter-of-factly.
โBut what did you say?โ
โYou donโt need to know that, Polka Dorothy,โ he said affectionately and booped her nose.
โYes, but will it last?โ
โOh, yes,โ Gio purred viciously.
And as she always did, Marina obligingly removed herself to her car for the allotted thirty minutes, and read. Once Dotโs half hour with Gio was up, she bounced into the Tin Lizzie, throwing her books in the back. โOh, Marina!โ she gushed. โItโs been such a relief!โ
Marina smiled at her. โTrey really does care about you, you know,โ she said, because it was true, even if he didnโt know or think about it at all.
โI know,โ she admitted grudgingly. โBut he shows it in such an odd way. I never knew he was so scary. He doesnโt scare you?โ
Marina shook her head. โHeโs just loud. And heโs usually mad at himself. Sometimes heย โฆย Well, I donโt know how to explain it. Sometimes he just doesnโtโ Oh, goodness, what am I trying to say? He likes it when he has problems he can solve. It makes him feel good.โ Which Marina didnโt realize until she said it.
โUmย โฆย โ Dot began once they were at Kresgeโs, in their regular booth and settled in. Their sodas and burgers and onion rings came. They always ate dinner there now. Marina didnโt have to eat alone and Marina took Dot straight to the veterinary because sheโd eaten and done homework. And Marina had a tab she paid at the end of the month like the rest of her bills.
Like an adult.
Which was another thing that had changed between her and Dot since sheโd gotten married.
โIย โฆย Trey said something thatโs been bothering me,โ Dot said low.
โOh?โ
โHe saidย โฆย umย โฆย about me and Gio beingย โฆย together. Like that, the way you and Trey are. That it wouldย โฆย settle me?โ
Marina blinked. โWell,โ she said, then took a bite, thinking while she chewed. โI donโt know if I can explain it, but Iโll try.โ
Dot nodded eagerly.
โThis is the way Trey explained it to me.โ She tried to describe about best pals and having fun that way, but it wasnโt coming out right and she got impatient with herself. โNo! I mean, that thereโs something inside you that stops worrying about tomorrow or other people and whether they like you or not because after you do that with your best pal, you wake up knowing that no matter what, thereโs somebody in the world who wants you and cares about you and always will and thatโs never going to change. After Trey and I doย โฆย that, it makes me feelย โฆย I donโt know. Solid. Secure.โ She paused. โSafe. Protected. Like I have a real home, like I belong somewhere where I am wanted. Iโm not just a name floating around in a house thatโs not mine, tiptoeing around the other people who live there. With Trey I can say what I think and get angry and yell and know that heโs not going to hold it against me and then we doย โฆย thatย โฆย and everything is all right again.โ

CAN YOU DIG IT?
20 minutes late as usual.
Kiss your girl- what do you taste? My nut.
The amount of time you spend thinking about Tres’s hole is concerning.
I have little interest in any hole that I can’t even be in the first millionth to enter, let alone the First.
Marina explaining make-up sex – wonderful.
LOL
Three days of not talking to one another was always great but it didn’t last.
Marina’s been doing…that…? Now she wants to get Dot doing …that…
Dot doesn’t need to be married for …that… Anyway that’s what I heard.
Thanks, Moj. Like General MacCarther, “I’ll be back”. I actually couldn’t remember what the story with Ruthie was either
Same time, same station?
Ruthie is a high school mean girl, but the story’s been going on for over a year, so it’s understandable if you don’t remember.

12:30 am Central and this wonderful story has a whopping ten comments, not counting Mo’s replies. And only two people gave enough shits to post on-topic. Noticeably, not a single TBTB or FOUNDER found time to comment.
It’s gonna take more than opening up the site to Google searches to fix this.
This might help

The PoWurs tHat Bee have other shit to so.
Careful, you might get cat-butted.
Fuck. At least the ban hammer is put away. Remember the early days when Swiss would just cut people. Especially if you mentioned the Methodists.
I’m sure that has nothing to do with all the people we’ve lost over the years.
One of Teh FoUndurs portrays himself as a child molester, but you better not deviate too far from the acceptable opinions!
It’s more about whether Swiss likes you or not.
I still remember Warty coming in and pretty much unprovoked launching a barrage of insults on UCS in the site4’s early days and no one said a word. UCS is one of the most tame people who posts her. He insulted UCS personally , for his politics (being a conservatard), told him to fuck off and then attacked his writing which the site was actually running at the time.
Swiss was nowhere to be seen to call his buddy out for what was blatantly uncalled for behavior.
Well, scratch that. Swiss was active in that thread, he just didn’t have the balls or decency to defend someone from another one of the founders.
Swiss was a fucking maniac with the ban hammer in the early days.

When are you two forming the quad laser?
We do at all family gatherings. The kids love it!
I have said it before, and I’ll say it again. Late night, I’m here to shoot the shit. There rarely is a crowd to even do that with anymore.
There’s only so many Good jobs, great story posts that are going to get made. People *need* to post off topic on nights like this. That’s not an insult to Mo or her writing.
The insistence that people stay on topic and don’t breach some bullshit made up etiquette is why the comment section is dead midday and at night.
Word. …or second… lol
“Late night”? You “firsted” at 7-ish pm. And I didn’t say a thing about the made up bullshit etiquette. It seems you missed my main point.
I get your point. This is supposed to be a self-supporting community and the founders are basically missing in action outside whatever rotation on articles they have.
My own point is simple. Conversation breeds conversation no matter who it comes from. It would be great if the people who run the site were more engaged with us plebs, but most of them checked out very early on in the first place.
Posting here should not feel like a chore or a check the box sort of thing which is what the on-topic policing makes the posting feel like. I would rather people just came here and said whatever the hell they wanted. You can have ten mini-articles underneath one article generating discussion. If people felt free to post what’s on their mind at all times, I don’t think we’d have such a major issue.
Agreed

Hells yeah, that’s a good one!
I’m listening to The Why Files. I’ve posted them here once, but I can’t believe they don’t have more fans around here. Libertarian leaning skeptics who do deep dives on various conspiracies (unfortunately, they avoid politics to avoid the Youtube ban button and to keep the clicks rolling in from both sides).
I find the subject matter fascinating. The host is a hell of a story teller, lays out compelling narratives and then hits you with actual facts at the end either debunking what he can or verifying what’s real. Covers science, aliens, ancient civilizations and history,, urban myths etc.
I’ve never seen it brought up here before despite their being millions of subscribers.
Was going to link something from there on Panspermia the other day but didnโt didnโt get around to it. Yeah, itโs a good channel-often a little speculative but itโs informed speculation and he doesnโt go too much out on a limb from what Iโve seen.

Morning, Glibs.
Mornin’.
Nice first.

Good morning, U, rhy, and Ted’S.!
Time to make the chai latte!
I composed Harappan Hypothesis 2 – Migration Bugaloo.
Time to send it in.
๐๐
Aaand… done.
I have to get breakfast, and figure out what I’m doing with the day.
So far my plans are pretty simple:
Drink chai latte
Listen to favorite “serious” music shows on satellite radio
Lurk and comment at Glibs
Crochet and/or read between comments
Eventually start
… and there’s my morning.
Oops! Lost a word: start LAUNDRY
Aww. “Eventually start” sounds like my plans.
Only I’ve just gotten back from buying a breakfast salad.
Also on the agenda:
Bake up some biscuits and/or muffins
Start a roast in the crock pot with potatoes and carrots
Talk to a potential contractor about his quote for a new roof ๐
If I’m feeling ambitious, actually do some house cleaning! (Probably floors)
I have to:
Pick up the plastic crack I preordered two weeks ago.
Buy real food from the butcher.
I should:
Return bottles
Clean up some floors
I want to:
Write
Paint
Build a clock from electrical components.
Those gotta do’s and oughta do’s look as if they’d still leave time for the wanna do’s.

So, is Marina still pretending to Dot that she needs sweet tea to experience these benefits?
