I have a new ritual- after a long day at the university, I come home, make some coffee, then spend the rest of the evening writing lecture notes for the next day, grading quizzes, writing questions for the next quizzes, writing practice problems… then rinse and repeat. Tomb Raider observed that she might never see me again until spring break. Maybe. That’s not totally fair- I took last night off and came up to Rochester to see a pretty good show and drink some beer. At my age, I’m supposed to slow down, but this new job has made me speed up. Next year will be easier, I keep telling myself.
Age requires birthdays and today is no exception, with (for example) a guy who has something in common with me; a guy who played by the rule; a guy who inspired Keenan Wynn; the definitive sidekick; a guy who shared Roosevelt’s views about Jews, if not his foreign policy; a woman who insisted on a business class upgrade; the guy who inspired Hunter Biden; the co-Aquarium Parent (honorary) with Ralph Bunche; the guy who did the very best low budget horror film ever; a clue to George Bush’s judgement; a guy who elevated rock showmanship to a new level; and a guy truly living his best life.
Now before I disappear again, let’s see some examples of Man’s Inhumanity to Man.
Whoever we’re buying bombs from, put your stock investments there. The Muppet in the White House continues the Democratic (and Republican, to be fair) tradition of waging unneeded war. The Old Man’s suggestion is Letter of Marque and Reprisal. Hey, it worked before…
OMG SHAPE SHIFTING MICROPLASTICS!
In case you thought Obama wasn’t the one with his hands up The Muppet. I was just listening to a Prog colleague ranting about Netanyahu (“He’s nuts, he’s crazy, he’s a dictator, he wants to destroy the Middle East!”), but I couldn’t get him to same anything specific that Netanyahu did beyond the equivalent of “He and Obama didn’t get along.” Everything else was, “Oh, someone who supports Netanyahu said something.”
But DC is totally not a crime-ridden shithole.
I strongly support her. Senator I’d Most Like To Filibuster.
Get the popcorn, the goyim are putting on a show.
Old Guy Music features the fellow Tomb Raider and I saw play last night at a terrific local brewery (Preservation Beer). Benny is excellent and made it a point to come over and give The Dog major pets. This is him with a couple folks we also saw him play with last year.
Sinema’s the one that likes short(ish) shirts with the high boots and the Lisa Loeb glasses…a cute plumping no doubt.
She has aged rather significantly since going to DC, though.
Must be something in the water.
Rosa Parks:
“Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake’s order to vacate a row of four seats in the ‘colored’ section in favor of a white passenger, once the ‘white’ section was filled.”
She was sitting in her assigned seat. She didn’t ask for an upgrade.
Ugh.
True but the linked article also has an unflattering pic-not the greatest angle.
Then again, the flattering pics are from mostly four or five years ago:

I often regret never really having a career up to my “potential,” but every so often I’m reminded of another reason I’m glad I narrowly escaped becoming a teacher. I’m sure you’re a good one, but if you’d rather, I hope that before too long you can get back to just doing actual science-y stuff.
As I have told more than one up-and-comer, “The only problem with a big paycheck is that sooner or later, you have to earn it.”
“Nothing is more boring than a man with a career.” — Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
I think it was my grad school adviser who said, “You can have money or you can have time.” It would appear that I chose time.
Ditto. I took a page out of my grandfathers book, and, as the son of an academic, did everything I could to avoid formal education.
Hey, I’m boring anyway — my career has nothing to do with it!
Yes, this is hitting the wife rather hard, right now. And, by the transitive power, me as well.
You’re hitting your wife pretty hard right now?
I may be getting the transitive property wrong…
Wrong chain of causality.

Yeah, everybody’s going on about Netanyahu because not-Left.
I have more to say about it, but I have no idea what random word is giving me the server error.
Every report on the Israeli protesters had people mentioning Hungary and Poland because that’s who the Ruling Class hated, ignoring the US left’s attacks on the Supreme Court.
Say what you will about Netanyahu’s policy vis a vis Palestine, his failures on Oct. 7, and his host of other issues-he also seems to be incredibly corrupt. Probably not the best person to hitch one’s wagon too.
I don’t really know anything about politics there so I don’t stick my nose in it.
Weird that thousands of college students seem to know better than me, though.
You can fix that pretty easily, just hop on social media. Some random guy from the the class of of 2028 will tell you all you need to know.
This is the correct attitude.
I’m more knowledgeable than most on Israeli politics but it’s not MY ass on the line so I don’t feel it’s appropriate for me to have an opinion on whom they should vote for. My faculty colleagues, who know pretty much zero about Israel still manage to have strong opinions.
The less real stake you have in being wrong only encourages stupid pronouncements for most people.
What news source(s) do you use?
—“thousands of college students seem to know better’—
I have this “problem” with one on my grandsons (and to be honest, with my daughter). They just want Israel to enter a cease fire agreement for humanitarian purposes and because the Israeli’s act like they really just want to destroy all Palestinians (their words). I have no idea why they feel this way, particularly when I tell them there WAS a cease fire in effect in 6 Oct. If all the Palestinians want is a cease fire, they had one. Fuck them all, not because they are Islamic or because the are Palestinians. Because there are murderous assholes.
That’s a really, really good way of looking at it.
This.
Palestinians have had many opportunities to choose a peaceful path. Instead, they voted for Hamas, which has not desire to rule as a legit government and instead chooses violence and terror. Indeed, fuck them all.
Is he more corrupt than the rest of Israel’s political class?
And are the Oct. 7 failures his, or the system’s as a whole much the way that 9/11 was a failure for US intelligence, not just GWB.
Israel would probably have been better off with a secular right coalition of Netanyahu/Ganz/Lapid/Lieberman, but the Never Netanyahuers were violently opposed to that.
So, that Jack Pervert guy—who inspired Keanu Reeves—made a cartoon that was released too early against his wishes. So, he spent thirty years reacquiring the rights to the movie and finished it.
“The King and the Mockingbird”

“[Nigel Bruce] appeared in two landmark films: Becky Sharp (1935), the first feature film in full Technicolor, and Bwana Devil (1952), the first 3-D feature. He uncharacteristically played a detestable figure in The Rains Came (1939) which became the first film to win an Oscar for special effects.”

You talking Duel? Great movie but Tremors was better.
I need to watch Tremors at some point.
OK, Bernie and friends, no money for Israel.
Nor Ukraine. Or Iran, FFS.
If Joe Biden made 96% of the vote in the South Carolina primary, that is a clear indicator of foul play. No wonder he wanted SC to go first. He bought the place off.
Only the most partisan partisans bother with the primaries and he cleaned up in SC in 2019 and no one wants hippie grandma or whoever the hell the other person is. 96% seems plausible.
Yeah, the dems here are pretty much all still in the tank for him.
Went looking for Stupid Party results in SC and found theirs isn’t until the 24th. It strikes me as odd that they didn’t hold them on the same day. Do any other states do that?
What is finny is most articles just say “the primary” and never mention the date. Such shitty journalism. Maybe one in ten articles bother to tell you the dates.
Stupid party is as stupid party does. Allow time for democrats to come vote in their primary too. Is that the plan or does SC magically ban that?
A little digging turned up some other states whose party primaries are on different dates, but it was more common for caucuses to be scheduled that way. I suppose in states where you have to register a party affiliation, you’d have to switch to vote in the other party’s primary, then switch back to vote in your own. In Ohio, you never have to register your party – on primary day, you just request one party’s ballot or an “issues only” ballot, as they usually throw some other measures in, from statewide issues to local school levies and all the way down to voting on a single vendor’s Sunday liquor sales just in its precinct.
Bill Talmud:
“ In 1958, a journalist asked Talman how he felt about Burger losing to Mason week after week. Talman said, ‘Burger doesn’t lose. How can a district attorney lose when he fails to convict an innocent person? Unlike a fist or gun fight, in court you can have a winner without having a loser. As a matter of fact, Burger in a good many instances has joined Mason in action against unethical attorneys, lying witnesses, or any one else obstructing justice. Like any real-life district attorney, justice is Burger’s main interest.’”
I *wish* real-life prosecutors had this outlook.
“A Bay Area Elementary School has spent $250,000 on a ‘Woke Kindergarten’ program only to see its student’s literacy and numeracy rates plunge.
The ‘Woke Kindergarten’ program states its mission as an ‘abolitionist early learning ecosystem’ that trains teachers to uproot white supremacy, disrupt racism and oppression which are barriers to learning.
After spending the federal money on the program Glassbrook Elementary in Hayward saw numeracy among its 474 students fall to a new low of just 4 percent and literacy just 12 percent….”

They never should have let LBJ internetize Oklahoma.
You mean, if you don’t teach kids to read, write, and do math, they don’t know how to read, write or do math?
Shocking! Who could possibly have predicted that?
The article buries the fact that BEFORE the Wokening, they were only at 8% literacy and 16% numeracy, versus 4% and 12% after.
Basically, shooting the survivors.
Disrupt racism.
Sure you are.
The Ida Lupino article is interesting. An impressive woman.
I’ve not seen any of the movies with which she is associated. I thought I’d seen “High Sierra”, but I got the name confused with “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”.
The Hitch-Hiker is a really good B movie.
And note that William Talman plays the hitch-hiker, so two of today’s birthday people are involved.
Different than TheHitcher?
…
Yes, although somewhat similar plot.
From the article about the endangered Bush Quail:
“According to the book Peril, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Quayle played a central role in advising his fellow Hoosier and Vice President Mike Pence to certify the 2020 United States presidential election as per the Senate rules, rather than cooperate with a plan by then-president Donald Trump that sought to overturn the election.“
The most shocking thing I read from the Furnier article:
“After his separation from Lang, Cooper was briefly linked with actress Raquel Welch, although according to Dick Wagner, Cooper rejected Welch’s advances.”
“Stop it! I’m not that kind of death metal rock star!”
I didn’t know Alice Cooper knew Richard Wagner.
I’m not going to click and I’ll just assume Alice Cooper was married to K.D. Lang at some point in the past. What a strange world.
I *did* click the link, again, but I will neither confirm nor deny your supposition.
I do think his wife (Sheryl Cooper) has an interesting biography, herself. It isn’t clear what year in which she was born. She didnt know anything about rock’n’roll music when she was hired as a dancer for his act.
There was this, as well: “The first time she touched him, she was teaching him how to stretch and she hurt him.”

“A 38-year-old Minnesota mother of two was arrested after she allegedly had sex with two 15-year-old boys at the same time at a hotel last month.
Allison Leigh Schardin, 38, of Blaine, was taking a “staycation” with her family at a hotel in Roseville where a boys hockey team from Colorado was also staying for a tournament, according to a criminal complaint.
Schardin began talking to the teenagers, who were both members of the team, in a hotel hot tub on the night of Jan. 14, and told them that she and her husband were having marital problems, according to the Star Tribune.”
https://nypost.com/2024/02/04/news/married-minnesota-mom-accused-of-having-sex-with-two-15-year-old-boys-at-hotel-after-fight-with-husband/
She wasn’t even their teacher.
I bet they learned some life lessons from her, though.
Quite the looker!
She’s a pear.
Next time she should just buy a sports car and hit on college aged kids as midlife crises should go.
It would seem to me, that type of behavior crosses a red line. She probably had to use quite the power play on them to get them to play along. And she’ll probably skate on any charges anyway.
Somebody goes to the box for hooking?
She turned a minor into a major penalty?
Puck around and find out.
It’s not like she married a Danny Devito look-alike. Maybe her husband is a loser in other ways, or maybe he’s playing the field, himself.
What’s kind of depressing is that, were I not married, and looking for a date, she would be too young for me.
How did that happen?
tshirt or bumpersticker nailed me recently:
how am I the same age as all these old people?
Worse than that – you look around at people younger than you that look older.
Yeah, all of them. Then a look in the mirror and reality sets in.
Minnesota nice put into action.
The really fucked up thing? Age of consent in MN is 16. If the 15 year olds were several months older, the sex would have been legal.
Maybe they just looked older. Needed an ID check
Well here’s a little something to stir things up.
It’s longish, and not right about everything, but has some salient points.
Seems pretty simple to me; if we begin approaching things from an angle of equality of opportunity rather than equality of outcome, the woke problems sort themselves out. No need to appeal to bizarre quasi-racialist sensibilities about genetically determined aptitude for certain things.
Further, the “smart set” he’s critiquing the overwhelmingly supports the lefty-academic complex are what I would consider “midwits”. My working definition of a midwit is someone with a slightly above average IQ (perhaps 1 sigma) but who wildly overestimates their own intelligence and suffers from severe Dunning-Kruger effect. If it’s the author’s assertion that reading NYT or the Atlantic and/or being a professional academic is what signifies superior intelligence then I have to disagree strongly; the quality of writing and critical thought at those outlets is often so bad as to be unreadable. Further, need we be reminded of the intellectual quality of the queen of midwits and erstwhile president of the lefty intellectual crown jewel Claudine Gay?
None of this is to say that the author is necessarily wrong; I just personally think the human animal is not nearly as impressive or intelligent as it fashions itself to be. That’s the same no matter your ideology, income, zip code or skin color. TL;DR – Humans are trash anyway so debating about who’s the tallest midget is an exercise in intellectual Onanism.
Another thing: due to the left’s near total control of the media (something that predates wokism by decades), absurd, fringe right-wing conspiracies get trumpeted from the rooftops to inform the whole universe how stupid the right is (see: the Taylor Swift Super Bowl conspiracy, something so beyond stupid I’m not completely convinced it wasn’t cooked up by lefties as a psyop), whereas equally absurd lefty ideas (oh I dunno, how a man can get pregnant and give birth? how the climate is going to collapse and kill us all if we don’t all start driving EVs? how not prosecuting crime is going to somehow make cities safer? etc.) get the carrot/stick treatment. The carrot being “these ideas are so rational and wonderful, if you subscribe to them you’re totes uber smart and everyone will love you! And you’re a better person too!”. The stick of course being “say one skeptical word against any of this and you’ll be cancelled and have your life ruined.”
It’s a true mystery has self-identified “smart people” fall in line with the left.
Absolutely right about the media having a massive thumb on the scale. Fetterlump was by far the lousiest candidate in any of the close races in 2022, but the overwhelming conventional wisdom was that Republicans Ned to find good candidates. I don’t know that there was much Mehmet Oz hate in the broad popular culture until the moment he announced as Team Red, at which point popular culture turned on a dime against him.
Or as my personal bugaboo is, every time a Republican says something dumb, the media immediately propagandizes that all Republicans everywhere believe this — yet Team Red almost never tries to do the same to Democrats. (I’d argue Glenn Youngkin in 2021 was one big exception.)
“Need”, not “Ned”. My tablet’s keyboard can be rather misresponsive.
Team blue controls the narratives and the MSM. Their signal is much, much louder and propaganda works.
There are also distinct structural differences between the two world views, one the most important is this; people want progress, for certain values of progress. They want things cheaper, easier, and, for lack of a better word, right. So, as long as progressives are perceived as providing this, they will shut down the reactionaries. But, and this is just as important; the reactionaries can always point to thing having worked, for certain values of worked. They are the known vs. the unknown promises of progressivism.
As always, I’m going to endorse and prefer fuck-off-and-let-the-market-figure-it-out
I agree with your spirit, but equality of opportunity replaces one bankrupt idea with a new idea that will be co-opted and perverted in short order; I can already see the bureaucracy that assesses and corrects for that
liberatarians are never stronger than when we stick to first principles; everything after that will inevitably just become some sort of cultural food fight
this is why I reject arguing with gun grabbers about statistics: my rights have nothing to do with your statistics, so why are we joining an argument we might lose when there’s a principle we can never lose?
most of the flim-flammery of that past five decades has been built on a foundation of redefining the game and moving goalpost; those things are only possible because those levers allowed the masses to be distracted from first principles, the right and wrong that they understood perfect in kindergarten but have since forgotten
equality of opportunity will never work as an argument as it will be perverted by the left by defining it different than you. a child will rich parents will have better opportunity unless all incomes are equal you will not have equality opportunity.
I think he is wrong from the jump, and it is one of the bigger problems right now. There is no lack of intelligence on the right, there is simply a major difference in morality, and that is what leads one to become a conservative. It really does come down to a version of ways vs. ends. The right is ALWAYS going to default to the ways as being more important, and this gives the left a distinct advantage in the field of politics.
The bigger issue, as far as gaining ground politically right now, is finding out were the high point of the bell curve regarding the left right axis is, and moving that to the right. And it is close, but needs more pushing to get it there.
Also, calling the Republican party the stupid party doesn’t really equate to any judgement on the intelligence of any individual conservative. At least in my mind. It’s not the party of the stupid. It’s a stupid party.
Yeah, he immediately defaulted to “Of course you can make fun of the right’s fringe which 8s representative of the right as a whole; and of course the left doesn’t have a fringe to make fun of, and making fun of *them* is just mean.”
We’re also getting issues (illegal immigration being the big one; Brexit in the UK is another) where the Dominant Culture with views of a plurality of the people. The Dominant Culture’s response is “we need to shit on the Icky Class even harder”.
It really does come down to a version of ways vs. ends
It comes down to people who can take my money and manage my life because of ancient ideas versus people who can take my money and manage my life because of newer ideas. If a Republican ever reduces government and its meddling in my life, I will consider voting for them, but since Reagan it’s been one long song and dance, bread and circuses, while the same old shit show got bigger and bigger.
How’s that old saying go? You might not care for politics, but politics sure cares about you? Something like that?
tbf I aint reading all that it don’t seem worth it.
I do not have the link right now, but I saw that the best IQ-politics thing showed the so called economic right-social liberal people seemed the smartest and economic left social right seemed the dumbest.
there was another study that showed libertarians were the smartest but scored low in empathy, but that confirms my bias too much so i dont count it.
I recently listened to a Tom Woods podcast with Wilfred Reilly, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University.
They were discussing Reilly’s book Taboo: 10 Facts You Can’t Talk About.
Reilly mentioned The Bell Curve and how Murray’s most recent book Facing Reality shows there’s a 7 point increase in IQ for African Americans in the 15 years since The Bell Curve came out (it was clear he has great respect for Murray’s work).
This creates a problem for the hereditarians who insist IQ is genetic and nothing can be done to improve it. It also creates a problem for leftists who accuse Murray of racism.
Reilly also agrees IQ isn’t as important in determining one’s success in life compared to other things like social class, growing up in a two parent home, etc. There are a lot of variables.
FWIW, Reilly is black.
Really interesting interview.
https://tomwoods.com/ep-2285-white-privilege-black-lives-matter-and-other-taboo-subjects/
Granted, this isn’t exactly tied to the discussion of left and right intelligence, but I found it thought provoking.
“The right is ALWAYS going to default to the ways”
Which happens when you have lost your principles (or worse, adopted the left’s) so you can’t object to the results or ends that pop out of the process/system.
“Smart people are disproportionately attracted to wokism in large part because it offers a more intellectually coherent explanation for the major issue of our time, which is the persistence of racial disparities.”
Your insistence on sorting people into made-up groups is the major issue of our time?
I think he is quite wrong to dismiss the march through institutions as it seems to be pretty factual.
As I will explain, wokesters correctly follow the equality thesis to its logical conclusion – not really because cognitive difference and cultural difference are not the same and the second matters a lot.
There is no definitive study on the IQs of self-identified liberals vs. conservatives or Democrats vs. Republicans. The best data we have come from the General Social Survey (GSS), which every other year surveys a representative sample of Americans. Participants in the GSS answer questions about their political identity, take a ten-item vocabulary test called WORDSUM, a test of probability knowledge, and a test of verbal reasoning. v – that test aint great and the difference is marginal. Also it seems to ignore large IQs
Academic Ranking of World Universities is not really all that relevant
Journalism is another area in which conservatives display less intelligence and competence than liberals. – journalists are morons and the left media is full of them
There’s also arguments about just how causal a a factor IQ is, with critiques on the small sample sizes of various studies.
The Conservative States of America would most likely be a middle-income country that squanders its national budget on hunting down abortion doctors and erecting Pyramid of Giza-scale Ten Commandments monuments.
And I’m out. Moron.

With unionized farmers, it’s a wonder they have food at all.
Let’s go Brandon
President Joe Biden will skip a pre-Super Bowl interview for the second year in a row — and his aides argue that it’s part of their larger plan, not a move to avoid having the president answer questions in front of the whole country.
Biden advisers tell CNN they see skipping the interview, which would have aired as a segment of the pregame show and not during peak viewing hours on the CBS broadcast, as a strategic decision to give Americans a break from the politics of the 2024 campaign. Advisers say they’re seeing people already expressing fatigue with election news and want to avoid piling on.
——-
The pregame presidential interview is a relatively young tradition, stretching back only to Barack Obama’s first year in office, and one that Donald Trump skipped once himself. But for Biden, who for months has been complaining in public and in conversations with top advisers that messaging touting his achievements isn’t breaking through to the public, the decision means skipping out on an audience of millions — including many who might not otherwise be paying attention to presidential politics.
He’s going to disappoint millions of adoring fans.
Maybe Taylor could do the interview for him? She may be more coherent (without being correct) and would probably outpoll him among younger people.
The pregame presidential interview is a relatively young tradition, stretching back only to Barack Obama’s first year in office, and one that Donald Trump skipped once himself
IOW, not actually a tradition.
My thoughts in Israel, Ukraine, etc, etc…
On Saturday, Biden argued there is more than regular politics to the 2024 race, saying in remarks at his Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters, “This is not just a campaign. This is more of a mission. We cannot, we cannot, we cannot lose this campaign, for the good of the country.”
“I think everybody knows it and I think it’s beginning to dawn on people,” Biden added.
Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other top Democrats have argued the president’s consistently low poll numbers are largely the result of Americans not knowing enough about him and his record, and that they have to do more to break through.
I suspect I am not the only person sick to death of this idiotic nonsense.
Joe loves being in Delaware so much, let’s give him a retirement Timex in 2024 so he can be there full time.
I have long advocated for a mandatory best used by date of 60 for all politicians. It’s the same age as commercial pilots get. I don’t care about the cognitive crap,
it’s a matter of making decisions that young people have to live by. Geezers want the kids to fight the wars and never seem to learn. Talk about making the same mistake over and over…
“The same conservatives who complain about immigrants not speaking proper American know fewer English words than liberals, and this indicates lower IQ.”
No, it doesn’t.
We’re surprised the Underground Economy is a derivative of tax policy and immigration, legal and otherwise.
Calling it the Black Market would be racist.
Skimming over the discussion above, I am going to go out on a limb and guess the thrust of the thesis (of the article I did not read) is, “People who agree with me are smart. People who don’t are dumb.”
Yeah, you see the “Enemy dumb, friend smart” with some (deliberately) misinterpreted social science study to lend it some modicum of credibility.
“A newly resurrected video of E. Jean Carroll from her 1996 television show in New York City reveals a completely unpredictable and deranged woman who is obsessed with men and sex.
The guests look noticeably uncomfortable as E. Jean Carroll lays down on the floor during the segment, starts screaming something about ‘The Dating Game’ show and then objectifies the male guests.
E. Jean Carroll: All’s you have to remember is you’re a woman. And if you’re a woman you’re precious… Yes my darlings, chasing men is the highest amusement there is, but manhandling the difficult little buggers is something else… Call me… I hate that music. I hate that music. I hate that music. This is not, not, not The Dating Game… A melancholy proposition is before our beautiful Moira. She either’s going to prove herself as a complete nitwit as a man handler… Here I come. Is there anybody here that weighs less than 400 pounds.”
“The article paints Carroll as a complete lunatic who lived with mice in a cabin she called the “Mouse House,” painted trees and rocks outside her log cabin blue, and traveled the country with her blue-dyed poodle but not her cat, Vagina T. Fireball, who she left back home.
Vanity Fair wrote, “The “E” in “E. Jean” stands for Elizabeth, a name she gave herself after growing up as Betty Jean. She lives in a cabin she calls “the Mouse House,” surrounded by trees with trunks she’s painted a striking shade of pale blue. When she embarks on her road trip, in a Prius named Miss Bingley, she leaves behind her cat, Vagina T. Fireball, but takes her now-departed standard poodle, Lewis Carroll, whose pompadour was also dyed blue.””

Unjected is the world’s first and largest COVID-19 unvaccinated platform since its creation in 2021 with members in over 90 different countries. We believe in staying vigilant against long-term spike protein exposure. With long-term health consequences after exposure to our vaccinated counterparts unknown, we knew it was our duty to bring forth a safe place for the unvaccinated to find each other. We soon realized it wasn’t just about the need for romantic companionship, there needed to be a platform that brought together the entire community of free-thinkers who were not buying into the agenda. Unjected has now become a rallying point for unvaccinated people from around the world to unite.””

Pro-democracy
At least 150,000 people gathered in front of the German national parliament Saturday afternoon to protest against the far right, the latest in a string of large weekend demonstrations across Germany.
The pro-democracy demonstrations started three weeks ago after the investigative journalists’ group Correctiv published an article saying that right-wing extremists had recently met to discuss deporting millions of immigrants, including some with German citizenship. Some members of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, were present at the meeting.
Saturday’s protest drew more participants than organizers expected, despite intermittent rain showers in the German capital. Police said that as of mid-afternoon on Saturday, approximately 150,000 people were in attendance. Similar protests against the far right in other German cities, including the southern city of Freiburg and the western city of Hannover, also drew thousands of attendees on Saturday.
Under the slogan “We are the Firewall” — a reference to the longstanding taboo against collaborating with the far right in German politics — protesters turned the space next to the Bundestag, or national parliament, into a sea of signs, flags and umbrellas.
We cannot allow anybody to vote for those assholes. We won’t even let people hear what they have to say,
Rant ON—
Our mail-in ballot elections are the most secure anywhere, anytime.
I just got back from the Post Office picking up my mail. There were TWO mail-in ballots, and neither of them was mine. They were from Kern County (California) but I live in San Bernardino County. One was addressed to one of my brother who died a year and a half ago in Montana. He never lived at my address and due to his drug/alcohol problem he has never been to my house. The other one was to another brother who lives in Las Vegas and due to the same reason as the other brother, has never been to my house. I love all of my family, but these two were very heavy into HARD drugs and I don’t want that in my house. Weed is one thing, but coke, meth and who knows what else, not in my home.
