IFLA: The “That Time of Year” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of Feb 11

by | Feb 11, 2024 | IFLA | 323 comments

The thaw brings out lots of people

The week starts of belligerently, with Mercury and Mars dominating. Fortunately that wears off by Wednesday. On the 14th, things show go remarkably well, with only a few date ideas cautioned against. Specifically, avoid cruises, boat trips, and related activities. Yes, I know that the pirate/pegleg/hook thing might be a Valentine’s Day tradition for you, but this year the risk of splinters is just too high. That all changes on the 16th. When Venus moves into Aquarius, feel free to engage in water sports to your heart’s content.

Daisy and Callie are in Lily’s Circle of Trust

Aquarius: 7 of Coins reversed – Sometimes investments don’t pay off.

Pisces: 2 of Cups – Celebrations, agreements, unions, formal partnerships that work.

Aries: Ace of Wands reversed – Something you started a long time ago comes back to bite you.

Taurus: 5 of Wands reversed – Loss in games, in-group politics going against you.

Gemini: 10 of Cups reversed – It’s not about problems, it’s about the “successes” that wind up being not what you thought.

Cancer: 2 of Swords – Balance, peace through strength, perhaps being a bit too judgmental.

Leo: 2 of Wands – You got yours, and a spare too. Thistle? Rose? They both bloom nicely.

Virgo: 10 of Coins reversed – Large risk gives large loss.

Libra: 6 of Swords – Running away from your problems does not help. There is no “fresh start” to be had.

Scorpio: 10 of Wands reversed – Burdens of your own making. Are you sure you’re even interested in that goal?

Sagittarius: King of Cups reversed – Sometimes the nice guy is actually a dick.

Capricorn: 9 of Coins reversed – Basic bougie bitches behaving badly.

Bonus Super Bowl Prediction draw: 7 of Cups reversed – this actually doesn’t mention which team wins. What it means is the game will be decided by a misperception/illusion/seeing something that isn’t there. Either a terrible read by a QB, a shit call, or a real call getting reversed.

Murray is not.

Well, I did start the chili this morning, and pretty sure it’ll bite back after it’s consumed. Bell, poblano, jalapeno, Fresno, Serrano, habanero, one of Sean’s super-hots (chocolate naga I believe), dried chipotle, dried aleppo, and smoked paprika.

    • Chafed

Are you making chili or trying to start a fire?

      • Nephilium

Chili of course. A nicely balanced, very spicy chili.

      • R C Dean

Sounds too spicy for my taste.

Which Iโ€™m sure is a top concern for you.

      • Nephilium

I just finished shredding the ~half pound of smoked cheddar to top the chili. Whole batch goes into an earthenware pie pan, topped with the cheese, and then just gets parked in the oven at the host’s house long enough to melt the cheese. Works as a dip or to spoon into a bowl to eat it. The heat is there, and it shows up, but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The fun of bringing this over the years is watching the kids reactions to it. They get warned that it’s spicy, and the bolder ones will try a little bit on a chip. One of my old acquaintance’s kids tried it, and came up to proudly say, “I tried the chili, and I didn’t cry or anything!”

    • The Other Kevin

Wait so THATโ€™S what Aleppo is?

I, too, just finished putting all the stuff in the chili pot: serrano, habanero, jalapeno, bell, poblano, chipotle, dried poblano (aka ancho), with short ribs

        No beans!

Onion, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, smoked pepper, fire roasted tomatoes, beef, Founder’s Porter, and masa.

      • R C Dean

When Iโ€™ve got my New Mex purist hat on, no beans. Abuela Deanโ€™s recipe had no beans, so thatโ€™s pretty much that.

Itโ€™s a big world, though. Iโ€™ve had chili with beans and enjoyed it more times than I can count.

The girlfriend has already yelled at me for “trying to kill her”. She was unable to be in the kitchen at the beginning of the cooking process due to the pepper fumes. I managed to avoid injuring myself with superhots, which is always a victory.

      • Tres Cool

        Rubber gloves are your friend.
Once after chopping peppers for chili, I diligently washed my hands with Dawn and hot water thinking that would get rid of the oil.
Hours later, before bed, I washed my hands again when I took out my contacts.

It was like Id been maced.

      • Nephilium

Once I had harvested some ghost chili seeds to send someone, and thought I had washed my hands well enough to be safe. I was incorrect, and touching my eye taught me that. I was contemplating pouring a shot of milk in my eye to try to help, instead I just suffered for the 20-30 minutes while the girlfriend laughed at me (after I had made it clear that there was nothing that could be done).

      • J. Frank Parnell

I have a friend who once chopped up some habaneros, then later that night his girlfriend discovered that he hadn’t washed his fingers enough.

    Sufficiently shitty.

Tres Ver 2.0 got his taste of a 12 gauge today. We’ve mostly been shooting small caliber since its cheap, and he needs to work on his skills.
But I loaded the ol’ Mossberg 500 with some slugs. Boy was he surprised.

    • Suthenboy

      equal and opposite….all that.
He should try my 458 Win Mag. It’s not what you would call a plinker. Three shots and you have that special kind of headache only a gun like that can give you.
It spits 500 grain bullets at around 2100 fps.

      • Tres Cool

Unless Im facing down a grizzly, or a Lyle Alzado filled with PCP and crank, I dont think I need that kind of firepower.

    • R C Dean

โ€œBut I loaded the olโ€™ Mossberg 500 with some slugs. Boy was he surprised.โ€

Nothing tightens up your form with a shotgun like shooting heavy loads. At one of my classes, we had a competitive shooter who was really good with light loads. When we started shooting 00, he learned some things about his stance. Slugs are where you squeeze out the last bit of slop in how you manage the gun.

      • Chafed

And nurse your shoulder the next day.

      • R C Dean

Iโ€™ve run dozeens of slugs and hundreds of 00 over a few days, and if your form and stance is tight, youโ€™ll be fine. You get beat up when you donโ€™t seat the stock right and donโ€™t lean into it right. Itโ€™s mostly repetition with heavy loads so you know what to expect.

      • Chafed

Where can I learn this mystical form of shooting?

  13. The Late P Brooks

    Boy was he surprised.

By the recoil, or the destruction?

    Blood in the water

President Joe Bidenโ€™s allies on Sunday defended the commander in chief and blasted a special counsel report that questioned the presidentโ€™s age and mental fitness as containing โ€œgratuitous, unnecessary and inaccurate personal remarks.โ€

Mitch Landrieu, a senior adviser to Biden, told NBC News’ โ€œMeet the Pressโ€ that โ€œthis kind of sense that heโ€™s not ready for this job is just a bucket of B.S. Itโ€™s so deep [that] your boots will get stuck under.โ€

Landrieu added that as a longtime adviser to Biden, he can testify to his mental acuity.

โ€œIโ€™ve been knowing him for 30 years. I have met with him personally. Iโ€™ve met with him with two people, five people, 10 people. I have been on trips with him, crisscrossing the country, rebuilding America based on this incredible infrastructure bill that was passed. And Iโ€™m telling you, this guy is tough. Heโ€™s smart. Heโ€™s on his game,โ€ Landrieu said.

    They’re behind him 1000%.

    • creech

So not senile, then must be criminal; he knowingly took classified info he wasn’t legally authorized to take, mishandled storage of same, and then shared this classified information with a private citizen unauthorized to see it. Either narrative is devastating to Biden so they go for the one contradicted by what any citizen observed every time Biden talks in public?

      • prolefeed

They go for the narrative that shows they own anyone who parrots such obvious lies.

You ain’t free if someone can compel you to say bullshit you know ain’t true.

Having it both ways – he’s sharp as a tack but can’t be held responsible for how he handled classified docs ‘cuz you know, good ol’ Grandpa Joe – without a trace of cognitive dissonance.

I daresay you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

They will keep playing until someone behind the scenes takes power. Right now it is a free for all; some want him gone, some want the cover of having him there.

  15. The Late P Brooks

When asked whether he or other members of the Cabinet have considered invoking the 25th Amendment, which would trigger a process for the Cabinet to remove and replace the president, Mayorkas said, โ€œNot at all.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t engage in politics. Iโ€™m responsible for governing and following the presidentโ€™s agenda, which I scrupulously do,โ€ he said.

“I’ve got troubles of my own.”

    • R C Dean

A political appointee running a cabinet department who โ€œdoesnโ€™t engage in politicsโ€ isnโ€™t doing his jobs.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection dog sniffed out something unusual in luggage from a traveler returning from Africa โ€” mummified monkeys.

I think I’ll sign in just before kickoff

  20. Shpip

I’m getting ready to have company over for the game.

    Menu is:

    BBQ ribs from Dreamland
    Smoked sausage from same
Brunswick Stew (the pork butt and chicken are what’s in the smoker)
    Cuban sandwich-style nachos
Cream cheese and chorizo-stuffed smoked jalapenos
    Deviled eggs
King cake (a nod to Mardi Gras on Tuesday)

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

      Yum!!!!

The Bourbon St webcam is gonna be lit after the game, methinks

      • Shpip

(Note to self: remember to dangle some beads in front of KK if you get on the Super Bowl Zoom tonight)

    • Shpip

For the Cuban sandwich nachos, we used this recipe, but with one important change.

Instead of combining Old El Paso taco seasoning and mustard for the rub, we put the pork butt in a ziploc and added mojo criollo, then put it in the sous vide at 165F for sixteen hours.

Between the bourbon, beer, and barbecue, a good time should be had by all.

      • Drake

Wait! Cubano nachos? Never heard of them, now I want.

      • R C Dean

        *Homer drool*

      • Shpip

It’s easy to make your own — if you can’t find sour orange, you can use two parts orange juice to one part lime juice to make your own.

If you don’t feel like making your own, mojo is easily found online or in any Latin American grocery store.

I have a working clock I wired and coded myself on a breadboard. I’ve only used 964 bytes of the 1kB storage, and I have three I/O pins remaining, so I can add the last two features – a seconds reset button and a switch to disable to time set buttons (one to get a more accurate time, and the other to avoid accidentally changing the time) That won’t take up all that much more space, since they’re additions to exisitng code blocks. Still, the current version has stayed just a few seconds off from my computer time.

    • R.J.

Nice. Now get some Nixie tubes to wire up your clock display. That will change how you communicate with your display to show time. Will also be fun.

      • UnCivilServant

That’s later on in the future. (Time was one of the things my ill-defined nixie project was going to display)

First I want to solder this onto a protoboard.

Just made a beer run to Smith’s (They are closest). The deli counter and chicken fryer are just inside the front door, so you get a snootful of fried chicken as you enter. I thought I might as well see what they had in the way of cold chicken. I only like dark meat, so I don’t ordinarily bother looking because the packages seem to always be breast/wing/leg. Today, they had boxes of “leg quarters” which I don’t remember ever seeing before, anywhere. Leg and thigh together. Very tasty, indeed. I hope they are a regular thing. That could get me back more often.

    Supar bowl feast handled.

MSP430: Flash/FRAM usage is 782 bytes. RAM usage is 62 bytes.

Dq Fuq? I added code, how is it 150 bytes smaller?

    • UnCivilServant

      Because it doesn’t work anymore.

      • UnCivilServant

So, If I reference an input pin that doesn’t have an interrupt enabled for it, the compiler/optimizer goes “Welp, that code is never going to execute” and omits it, even though that pin can have its state change extenrally – I just don’t want to trigger an event on that pin’s state change. It’s a switch to enable or disable setting the time. Maybe I just have to have its interrupt event do nothing.

      • UnCivilServant

Well, turning on interrupts for the pin the switch feeds got it past the compiler and now the buttons only change the time when the switch is on. Good.

But the bounce sensitivity has gone way up. Bad.

I still have some wiggle room to add some debouncing code. Meh.

      • R.J.

We break things to learn how they work.

      • UnCivilServant

I’ve broken this clock code a lot.

      • UnCivilServant

        ๐Ÿ™

All of the methods I’ve tried to debounce the inputs has resulted in them simply not working. I can see that it does run through the code since the delay causes a flicker in the output display, but the action from the button doesn’t execute.

      • UnCivilServant

        W00T!

I fixed it. The output still flickers, but I get 1:1 updates of the time value per intentional button press, and it only registers button presses when the switch is on.

      • Gender Traitor

        ๐Ÿฅณ

      • UnCivilServant

Cleared up the flicker, and the debouncing appears to be working correctly.

        I think I’ve done it.

MSP430: Flash/FRAM usage is 932 bytes. RAM usage is 62 bytes.

Cutting it close on the space though (I had to rework some of the existing code to get it back under the 1kB limit)

      • Brochettaward

Seeing people talk about what he supposedly isn’t has pissed me off. I’ve seen this story before. It really does remind me of Brady. Does he go onto that career? Unlikely not. But the guy can play, and if he was a first round pick everyone would be fitting him for a golden jacket already.

Residents who had long seen their city as a wondrous jewel of the West Coast, with its culinary delights and sublime natural beauty, are now trying to rebuild the cityโ€™s tattered reputation โ€” and finding it a daunting task.

Most cities, including NYC, don’t have the worst of the decay butting right up against City Hall and the Financial District and major shopping in nearly the same way that SF does.

Put simply, you cannot live there and avoid it. Because in almost every direction, except North, you have to travel through the shittiest of shitty neighborhoods.

      • prolefeed

I think that means if you curb stomp them on defense, a single sack and turnover near the opponent’s goal could be all it takes to win.

    Huh, Kennedy for pres ad.

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

      Weird one

    • Sensei

      I thought it creative.

      • R.J.

  41. R C Dean

    There. Moj gets a lifeline.

    • The Gunslinger

Yup. One score game and I believe KC gets the ball after halftime.

  42. The Late P Brooks

Kennedy for Prez ad is far and away the best thus far. It looks like they pirated one of his uncle’s ads from 1960.

    • R.J.

They did, that was a great idea.

      • The Hyperbole

    • Mojeaux

While inflation has slowed down to a three-year low, prices are still punishingly high for many Americans

These two things can’t be true at the same time.

Unless you’re not measuring food prices in your inflation indexโ€”oh, wait.

      • Ted S.

The media also dishonestly implies that if the rate of inflation is falling (but still above zero), prices should be falling, with the further implication that it’s the fault of the people charging the prices for not having falling prices.

      • Raven Nation

Yep, Australia and New Zealand both have “independent” watchdogs investigating grocery chains for price-gouging.

      • Don escaped Texas

not to bolster Biden, but I think they mean it this way

        suppose:
        inflation for year 1 = 10%
        inflation for year 2 = 10%
        inflation for year 3 = 0%
then you could say with a straight face that inflation is at a three-year low even while prices are up 21%

      • Gender Traitor

something something lies, damn lies, and….something

      • Don escaped Texas

we could talk about price level to be clear, but everyone has a different reference point, so it doesn’t tell the kids anything if we say a buck today is worth $1.82 in 2000 dollar

for my money (pardon the pun), none of the political arm-wrestling means anything: fiat money gonna depreciate, and large government is stupid, so there are no points for either party or any president to make; if anything, Republicans look dumber to me pretending Sleepy Joe is the original monster when Democrats have never proven any grasp of economics: Republicans are just as bad at paper-printing, but they know better

      • DrOtto

Why come the prices don’t come down? Tis a mystery. They know exactly what they mean and are being intentionally misleading. That’s why the lead paragraph cites corporate greed.

      • The Hyperbole

Some prices have, huevos para ejemplo. and from what I can tell many other prices have stabilized at about 15-20% over what they were pre covid.

      • The Hyperbole

      • Mojeaux

Nothing, I thought. It was a very nice, classy ad.

      • R.J.

People need to stop apologizing over nothing. It was a great ad, probably the best I’d seen from any presidential candidate this cycle. His family is making him feel guilty about it to get the ad pulled because it would otherwise be very effective against Biden.

  68. Derpetologist

Shpip’s party was fun. His wife is nice and a good cook. Also, I learned the amusing story behind his glib username. His friends were pleasant as well. • Gender Traitor

      • UnCivilServant

Yes. The state offices are closed for that.

That’s why Lilcon’s Birthday is inevitably one of the floating holidays every year. They tend to always be the same ones (Lincoln, Election day, etc) but since it’s a contract memorandum rather than legislation, the determination has to be officially made each and every year.
