The government ruins everything. Take electric cars, for example. Elon Musk figures out how to mass-produce an electric car. He even built out his own charging network, all of which is a fine thing. He eventually even sold enough cars to become profitable. The government sees this and decides “Let’s make everyone drive electric cars.” Never mind the fact that Elon is very savvy, and his success in electric cars cannot be repeated by other companies without Elon’s skill sets. Overall, forcing consumers to buy electric cars becomes a high-profile failure and the coercion leaves a bad taste in many people’s mouths. Thanks, Ass! But don’t think to coercion has ended. They never stop.
Now translate this to the push for assisted suicide. The initial concept was good. Allow people in agony the option of release instead of months of decline and suffering. The government decides, “let’s let everybody do it.” Pretty soon every doctor is forcing it as a subsidized option, which is absolutely dastardly. Now let’s fast forward another ten years in time. What if the government decided it can’t afford social security anymore and so the solution, instead of cutting off benefits, is mandatory death at age 65. The next thing you know, that age comes down a little every year…
Then you have recreated Logan’s Run. I know a lot of us saw this movie years ago. Watch this again with fresh eyes. We are on the other side of the mirror now. This is hard to watch. Most reviews of Logan’s Run were prior to 2020 so all the crap we have gone through had yet to filter into the collective consciousness. For those of you who need a quick review of Logan’s Run, including a comparison to the book, here is one that isn’t too long and doesn’t harp on the disco fashion. Otherwise IMDB has a plot summary here.*
I am curious to hear all your thoughts on the subject of assisted suicide and where we are heading. It’s damn near part of the Iron Law of Oligarchy that government programs cannot be destroyed and inevitably grow, so where goes Canada and New Zealand from here?
Trivia: A fair bit of this was shot in and around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I was proud of that. One of the scenes showed waterfalls and steps which Logan and Jessica navigate. That was the infamous Water Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas. From IMDB:
“The main pool used to be nine feet deep, but it closed in 2004 after four people drowned near the spot where Logan and Jessica dove in. When it reopened in 2007, the depth had been reduced to two feet.”
Good Lord. Some people could not abide the instructions to keep out, so the entire thing had to be altered. No accidents for 28 years, one thing happens and the city goes all soft and fainty. I was not proud of that.
One more trivia point: There was a TV series of Logan’s Run that managed to stay on the air for an entire year. Until now, I had never seen even a small bit of it. I realize now the Good Lord was protecting me from it.
So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary until some government functionary murders you for the greater good! Next week, it has been highbrow around here for too long….
So we will watch Repligators! Soldiers, transformed into beautiful female fighting machines! Who then turn into gators! Are they cannibals if they have gator heads and eat people? Is this plot for real? Answer these questions and more next week!
*IMDB also has a great goof point about how Jessica’s panties changed color throughout the film.

That does look bunkworthy.
Also, I’m all for replacing the Canadian parliament with cats.
Agreed. Cats would be an improvement.
Seriously, coming in hot with that pic.
Well done. Well, done.
Logans Run was peak 70s. I loved that movie as a kid.
Me too. It left a mark.
I remember watching the TV series. Fortunately, I was young and stupid. I do remember being pissed about it having no ending.
I think they killed it mid season. Ratings must have been awful.
But, ahh, Jenny Agutter.
I saw the TV show too.
I’ve seen the movie so many times I can watch it in spirit tonight even as I’m actually watching hockey.
Most reviews of Logan’s Run were prior to 2020 so all the crap we have gone through had yet to filter into the collective consciousness.
I actually had an IMDb review (not of Logan’s Run) rejected, most likely because of comments I made about the pandemic. It was this episode of Quincy, M.E..
I watched it long ago. I remember very little.
The second half fails to live up to the first half. The post “dome” adventures seem disjointed and the ending is WTF. But I still like the film and the aesthetic.
I think that comes down to trying to make a movie from a book.
Blade Runner (non happy ending) may be the exception.
I preferred the film to the book.
I prefer both, but knowing that they are different so as to not corrupt one another.
Disjointed because, if I remember correctly, the fugitive pair run across a number of unknown to them societies. That part of the novel examines different cultures and ideas. It is woven into the story as an awakening to the characters, that not everyone is like the society they come from, things can be different.
I imagine condensing that down into the movie was a bit difficult.
In the end they come across the remnants of the enlightenment and introduce it back home. The people suddenly see a glimpse of what they were hungering for.
I wonder how long after our current idiots have smothered the enlightenment before the common man begins to realize what they have allowed to be stolen from them? At this point I hardly give a shit. Future generations? Yes, I care about them. This current crop of good men doing nothing I have essentially lost faith in. As always they are going to get what they voted for. I cant save them from themselves.
It’s been decades since I read the novel, but I recall that was the case.
This is correct. Instead they run through a giant AC system, then run into a disco ball mirrored robot that looks like I made it, and then finally find sanctuary. The point in the novel is that they lived in a tiny, closed off society and the greater world was out there. Their gilded cage was a prison that kept them from life.
L Neil Smith did that same plot in a book too, about people living in an asteroid. One side, walled off government slaves. The other side, crazed libertarians. I think it was “Pallas” but don’t quote me on that.
L. Neil Smith. That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time.
I used to religiously read his “The Libertarian Enterprise” every week.
I never met him. I like his writing. I have a lot of his books.
People are free to listen to The Beach Boys, they shouldn’t and are bad people if they do, but I don’t want the government stopping them from making that huge mistake. That’s my take on Assisted suicide as well, it should not be a government program, but it should be completely legal.
Do hate all surf music, or just the Beach Boys in particular?
Jan and Dean rock, Dick Dale is okay, that’s the extent of my surf music knowledge.
Oh, wait… The Boss Martians put out some surf music and it kicks ass.

USMC has DIs (drill instructors); Army has Drill Sergeants.
Army Strong. Army Smart? Army Sentence Fragment.
What rank are Marine drill instructors?
Staff Sergeant and Gunnery Sergeant usually.
And the platoon (E7) sergeant in an artillery battery is “Smoke”.

THX-1138 is another 70s sci-fi movie with similar themes. It was also the directorial debut of George Lucas. This is where the THX movie sound company got its name.
The title is the name of the protagonist.
Another excellent film.
What happened to that guy?
When he was young, broke, and unknown, he had to be creative and write well. Once he had money, he was free to do as he pleased, much like Florence Foster Jenkins.

question for computer pros:
If an attacker has access to a target’s computer and the servers of the email service the target uses, would it be possible to delete an email sent by the target without either the target or the intended recipient knowing of it?
That is, the attacker deletes the email off the server after the target sends it and receives confirmation of its arrival but before the recipient can open it?
Well, I was going to ask something simple like “why did RetroArch open two instances of itself and then self-destruct?”
I believe our resident gurus are not around.
I have some training and knowledge of electronic tomfoolery, but not much about the nuts and bolts.
Escalation of privileges + arbitrary code execution = NSA cyber fun time
Once when I booted up my experimental computer Deep Dish, a screen appeared for a few seconds stating that an SSH had been established. SSH is short for secure shell, and it means that someone else had remote access to my computer. I neglected to change the SSH default password, which is something the attacker knew and took advantage of. Many other devices have a similar vulnerability.
I know from reading top secret NSA reports that secure shells are a frequent hacking tool.
If they are watching you, just play the weirdest but legal porn you can find on loop 24/7.

When G Gordon Liddy was in the Army, he was assigned to an air defense unit near NYC. Their job was to search the skies for Soviet bombers, but they spent most their time using their high-powered binoculars to watch NYC women dress and undress.

Will: G. Gordon Liddy is an American television film which first aired on NBC on January 10, 1982. The film depicts the rise and fall of Watergate co-conspirator G. Gordon Liddy. Liddy was portrayed by two different actors: American actor Robert Conrad played Liddy as an adult and child actor Danny Lloyd portrayed him in his youth. Other figures associated with the Watergate scandal and portrayed in this film include Jeb Magruder and John Dean. The movie was directed by Robert Lieberman and was based on Liddy’s 1980 autobiography.
…
The film includes several famous details from Liddy’s 1980 autobiography including the legendary “hand held over the burning flame,” and Liddy’s oath, “I will kill for you, Mr. President.”[2]

Liddy was medically discharged from the Army after he burst his appendix during a sit-up/beer drinking contest. He regretted not being able to fight for honor and glory against communism in Korea.

I have another math teacher job interview tomorrow and then a teacher job fair on Saturday. Someone will hire me. Of all the civilian jobs I’ve had, math teacher in the Peace Corps was the one I liked the most and kept the longest. Teaching barely feels like work for me, which indicates it is the field I should stick with. Goddard funded his rocket experiments through a teaching career. When I was young, I thought I was destined for intellectual greatness. It seems that time has passed. Whatever, I do what I can with what I have where I am.

Schwarzkopf gained great respect for certain military leaders at West Point, notably Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman and Creighton Abrams, believing them to be excellent commanders who nonetheless did not glorify war.
***
Sherman said war is hell. Abrams, a WW2 tank commander, got a tank named after him, and after Vietnam made it so the Army could go to war without calling up the reserves and the National Guard.
***
He was also a member of Mensa.[28] Schwarzkopf graduated valedictorian out of his class of 150,[29] and his IQ was tested at 168.

Commissioned into the Army as an Infantry second lieutenant, Schwarzkopf reported to the United States Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he attended the Infantry Officer Basic Course and earned his Parachutist Badge from October 1956 to March 1957. His first assignment was as a platoon leader and later executive officer of E Company, 2nd Airborne Battle Group, 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.[36] He later recounted that it was then that he found chronic problems in military leadership, amid what historians have called a larger doctrinal crisis. Schwarzkopf later said there were many officers and NCOs he met on that assignment who “had no sense of duty or honor, and who saw the world through an alcoholic haze.”[37]

I think Canadian assisted suicide will persist for some time. It will eventually get rolled back as atrocious stories emerge and can’t be reconciled with the promises that lead to the laws passage. I won’t be surprised if the effort is lead by parents of severely disabled children.

Will we ever see the crossover extravaganza of Logan’s Midnight Run?
And, you old farts can’t fool me, Logan’s Run is just Premake of the Justin Timberlake classic In Time. Old people never think of anything new like the young people do.
Hah! You never watched Zefferelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” in 9th grade English class. That one point in the movie sounded like woodpeckers drumming on the bottom of the desks.
Again, that was just a premake of the DeCaprio classic. Old people just premake things the young think up. It’s premakes all the way down. Nothing original except what will come in the future.

The hook was an initial binge of 20 dvds “for free” to get started. I tried to think of movies I liked but might be too obscure to be around in a decade or two.
Logan’s Run made the cut. As did Joe vs Volcano, Moonstruck, secret of NIMH, Heaven Can Wait, Midnight Run. Can’t remember them all but it was an eclectic mix.
Birthday was fun today. My “underlings” at work took me to an Indian restaurant (yum!!) and then presented me with a key lime pie, homemade. Delicious.

I was thinking today was Saturday and I wouldn’t have to work. Damn it!.
Oh well.
It had better not be, I have projects I need to finish before the weekend.
Run, runner!
Good morning to all. Looks to be another nice day weather wise (no snow).
Things to do, places to go, people to see. I guess those can wait for a few more days, no use to rush into things.
Good morning, 4(20), homey, Sensei, U, cav973, Sean, and hayek (if you’re still awake!)
I’m taking today off work because 1. I’m almost maxed out on Vacation time and will stop accruing more if I hit the limit, and B. it’s my next-older sister’s birthday, and I’ve dragged my feet figuring out what to get her for when we meet her and my oldest sister & BIL for a birthday dinner tonight.
What do you get a perpetually-broke, allegedly-recovering Crazy Cat Lady? Right now I’m leaning toward a basket of food goodies from the nearby German Baptist farm market – jams/jellies, popcorn, other snacky things – with a mainstream grocery’s gift card tucked in. Maybe also a pretty flowering plant, which the farm market also sells.
But they don’t open until 10 EDT, so I can actually be around for the start of AM Lynx! 😁
Aww, the computer doesn’t have the drooly face icon. Well, the images are too small in the browser for the proper effect anyway
Your sister will be happy and appreciative of your thoughtfulness. I used to send gift cards to my kids, now it’s straight cash, cut out the middle person.

TALL ERIE CANS!
I may have missed it, but was this a temporary or a permanant move to the lakeside?
Yeah, homey, what U said – are you really moving to the wrong side of the state??
Temporary.
For now Im a “remote worker” in the sense that I live someplace else. Monday-Fridays will likely be spent up here, or ideally on a project someplace in the state.
As much as travel is a part of the job, the weeks previous employer kept me on the west coast was a bit far from home.

Got my state/fed tax refunds. Always good news that I didn’t error enough to send out a red flag. I could almost just copy-paste from year to year, only the numbers change a little.
Combined I think I only got $100 of my money back.
Between the eyeglasses, the car, the upcoming insurance bill, etc, etc, I’m already broke.
You made a smart move by getting your house paid off early.
The other bills are transitory and are not always re-occuring so there’s that. I put off the eye exam business for a while, glasses seem to be working OK for now.
Fun times on the Tesla message boards.
New models have no turn signal stalk, but instead two buttons on the steering wheel to activate the signals. Typical Tesla – change for change’s sake and likely marginally cheaper. It’s is polarizing with lots of detractors especially in Europe where traffic circles are common. Finding the buttons with the wheel partially turned is a PITA. All these issues will be resolved when the car drives itself, naturally.
Also in typical Tesla fashion the initial batch of Model 3s have issues with the system. It’s not activating the turn signal despite recognizing the button press. As per typical Tesla it will be fixed in a software update. ETA unknown. I’d be mighty pissed if it was my car.
Best comment is that it’s stuck in “BMW Mode”.
After too many years too remember, pulling-pushing up the turn signal lever would be hard to change. I’d never figure out a button mode. I installed turn signals on my ’46 Ford in ’55, as an update. It made me the cool kid, didn’t have to put my arm out the window anymore.
https://zutobi.com/us/driver-guides/hand-signals-driving
There are more than a few things that Tesla is trying to change. Problem is muscle memory for anyone that has driven for a number of years.
The turn signal issue is a big one. Other cars have done the different turn signal activation, but not on the mass scale that Tesla has.
It shouldn’t be a problem for anyone driving in NJ though.
And In PA they just go immediately to the left lane and never move, so you barely, if ever, need it.
🙂
And yes I find the lack of signaling in NJ to be ridiculous. It’s definitely more of a northern NJ and NYC metro area thing than the southern part of NJ.
Fer fuck’s sake.
I actuate turn signals by extending a finger or two from my left hand and flicking the lever. It requires no thought and I’m never going to accidentally signal the wrong way because the wheel was turned slightly. Most importantly, it doesn’t take my eyes off the road to verify I have the correct signal.
The old design was there for so long because it works.
