Having a math issue with Mrs. Prole regarding our property tax appraisal. Our assessed value was about $100k below their alleged market value, because the assessed value is capped at a 10% annual increase. I sent in a protest saying their alleged market value was way above an actual sales price for a nearby property.
They promptly offered to lower the market value by $50k – which is still $50k above the assessed value.
Mrs. Prole was delighted at this “decrease” in taxes. I said they had politely told us to go pound sand and weren’t gonna decrease our taxes at all. She didn’t believe I understood their offer.
Tell her I sympathize and that property taxes are a racket.

We’re taxed at about 1/2 of 1% of assessed value. OTOH we have a state income tax plus a sales tax (not on food and most clothing)

I happened to be in NYC yesterday, meeting a cousin for lunch on the upper west side, so I decided to wander around Morningside Heights to see what all the fuss was about. Entrances to Barnard and Columbia were closed to the public, but there was a small group of “protesters” outside the Columbia entrance on Broadway, dressed in masks and kiffayeh, chanting their fool heads off. They were severely outnumbered by New York’s Finest and crews from all the local news outlets, which confused me – I did not know at the time about the encampment *inside* the campus, which was what they were there for. You need a lot of cops to make 108 arrests, and a lot of “journalists” to keep the public informed.
Had lunch with my cousin at noon, then walked back uptown and saw corrections vehicles heading uptown on Broadway, and said to my cousin “looks like they made a few arrests”. Yeah, they made a few. And they all got desk appearance tickets. Nice piece of theater.

Actually, Morningside Heights is pretty cool. Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Riverside Church, Grant’s Tomb, numedrous well-maintained parks… And lunch (about 15 blocks south of there) was cheap and good. Shredded beef Cuban style, Plantains, soup, salad for $20 including tip.

y OT, I am now the proud owner of a new laptop whic in its former life was my corporate laptop. I was supposed to receive a prepaid shipping box to return it, but when three weeks passed with no box, I decided to wipe it and install linux. So I now have a perfect laptop to take with me when I’m travelling. It’s a 5 year old laptop, so probably not up to corporate standards and they no doubt would have trashed it had it been returned. Pretty bad security, though, I had a lot of proprietary stuff loaded on that workstation. I did them a favor by wiping it.
When I moved last year I discovered a work laptop in my closet that was probably 8 or 10 years old. That was back when we got a desktop for the office and a laptop for after hours.
I hadn’t considered that. Smartphones are not the most reliable or secure devices, I don’t understand the rush to make everything dependent on them.
It’s to the point where I got a cheap refurb samsung tablet that’s the garbage can device. It sits powered off most of the time until I trip over something that insists I use some dumb phone app, then the tablet gets it installed until I get past the hurdle.
The GoPro insisted I download their stupid app to complete first time setup – even though it hasn’t complained once about never talking to the app again.
Thats why I have a portable raspberryPI for ‘development’ in my workbag.
