Plaga Zombie: American Invasion

Plaga Zombie: American Invasion

Look!  It’s a film that’s only 3 years old!  And it’s from an Argentinian director!  Contrary to my normal standard, this is a sequel to the original Plaga Zombie which was actually filmed in Argentina.  So why did I pick this one? Two reasons.  1) This was filmed in English, the original and other two sequels have spotty closed captions in English. 2) The original was made on a budget of -10 dollars, because “Commie Argentina circa 1997.” The passion is there, but the production might scare you fine people off of enjoying a good series.

So what can I tell you about this film series? It’s a zombie film series, in case you were wondering. Evil aliens infect people with a virus to turn them into zombies, etc…   This whole series is Pablo ParĂŠs‘ baby. He directed the first three, and was the “guest director and editor” on this film. He was born in 1978 which is when most Glibs were graduating high school.  I keeed! Sort of. Anyway he is very young, and has produced a ton of films already.  How many?  Take a guess. Five? Ten?

He has directed 37 films (including a lot of shorts).  His first full-length film was Plaga Zombie in 1997, from there he directed 23 full-length films.  So, about a film a year with only a few breaks.  The man is a machine. I would also point out that a lot of his output gets high scores on IMDB, in the 6-7 range. Really impressive for popping out a close to a film a year.

I am including a link to the original Plaga Zombies and sequels in case you want to see his related back catalog. What’s interesting and educational about these films is it shows you some good Argentinian scenery and culture from the Commie era. If you want to see everything he has done, click on the link above for IMDB and review his significant back catalog.

So watch!  Or don’t!  Everything is voluntary! Hopefully you enjoy tonight’s film, and learn about a new set of films to binge watch. Next week, we will jump ship to Plex and watch a Hammer film classic: Kiss of the Vampire!

    “He has directed 37 films”

    In a row?

    • R.J.

Almost. There was one or two short films in there post 1997. After 1997 is was 95% back to back full-length films. I would say something like “What an amazing output” but then you are watching tonight’s film and probably figured out how he did it.

      • R.J.

I went down the street to the 24-hour grocery. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door. I said, ‘Hey, the sign says you’re open 24 hours.’ He said, ‘Yes, but not in a row.’

    But what about boobs?

I’m going to dive in and find out.

    • R.J.

Boob free for at least a few more weeks. Although the new “Sausage Party” graphic for blue nights is going to be a hit.
Mojeaux is right though. Thursdays is the most sausagey of the Glib sausage parties.

There is a discount Snake Plisken later. And a K-Mart Von Eric.

TT went off to an open mic night, so I’m getting in a little evening Tranquility Base time! Dinner is a mess o’ chicken salad from a little deli/wine store, washed down by a mug o’ milk with a shot of Bailey’s! 😋

    • R.J.

Nice! I had leftover mac and cheese with sausage, and now some corn whiskey.

      • Gender Traitor

Now I want mac & cheese, but the deli is closed. 😞 Ah, well! More Bailey’s & milk will suffice!

Also awesome: our backyard tulip poplar is blooming! 🥰🌳🌷 (wrong color flower, but you get the idea!)

      • R.J.

The Rose of Sharon and the Magnolia tree are both blooming all over. Fantastic amount of blossoms and furry bumble bees right now.

      • Gender Traitor

That’s great! We have a magnolia that hangs over the driveway. It’s beautiful in bloom, but it keeps flowering too early and getting hit with a late frost, which turns the petals brown and dumps them all over the driveway.

We used to have a Rose of Sharon, but it got crowded out by what I call a “weed tree.” (Maybe a mulberry or something related?) 😒

      • dbleagle

Heading out in a while for the Thursday night race. We will follow it up with a session at the grill. We usually have burgers from local beef but tonight I am bringing a dozen oysters to grill for an appetizer.

      • DEG

our backyard tulip poplar is blooming!

        Nice!

Stuff is starting to bloom in southern NH.

Takeout Thai tonight. A happy discovery – a Dark and Stormy makes an excellent pairing with Thai (especially with a spicier ginger ale – we use the Q Light ones).

  5. Aloysious

    Aliens and zombies? Winner.

    Here we go…

    • R.J.

Just… Remove expectations. You’ll enjoy it.

  6. DEG

    “My regular alkies”

    Heh

  7. trshmnstr

Sounds like an interesting movie! I may have to watch it tonight.

In tangential news, the reports of the local drive-in’s demise were false. There’s a double feature of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Civil War for the next two weekends.

Also, in even more tangential news, the drive in wasn’t blown away by the tornado that put a new dent in my truck! Thankfully, the trashcan is fully hardened to tornadoes, so the trash family survived unscathed.

    • R.J.

      Good news!
My dream would be to open a drive in and have all-night weekend movie marathons of silly schlock and bands. Live shows, bands, etc… used to be a big part of the drive in experience and I think it is overdue for e return.

      • R.J.

Dent in the truck isn’t good news though. But the house surviving STEVE SMITH’S FIST sized hail is good.

    • Gender Traitor

Yikes! Was the truck parked at the time?

      • trshmnstr

Yep, out in the driveway. We got a gust of really strong wind (probably 65 or 70 mph) as the tornado dissipated, and it showered our house with twigs and leaves and stuff. I have no clue what hit the truck, but it’s a beater so it’s just one more dent for the collection.

I’m a bit annoyed at myself. I put an SD card in my security camera earlier this week, but decided to have it record only people and animals. It would’ve had a perfect view of the tornado if i had left it to record on motion.

      • Gender Traitor

That’s a bit too close for comfort! 😳🌪

      • Tres Cool

You saw my video of the Memorial Day tornadoes.

      • Gender Traitor

Only vaguely remember. Was Jugsy yelling at you?

    • DEG

the reports of the local drive-in’s demise were false.

      Excellent.

Thankfully, the trashcan is fully hardened to tornadoes, so the trash family survived unscathed.

      Also excellent.

  8. Aloysious

Ear worms give me the heebie-jeebies.

    • R.J.

There are some really unexpected musical numbers, even a video with the fake Von Eric that made me wonder if suddenly I had changed movies.

      • R.J.

Thankfully the gratuitous Troma-level gore made up for it.

      • The Hyperbole

What’s a Von Eric? Google just gave me the Von Erich wrestling family whoever they were.

      • R.J.

        Yeah yeah.

      • Aloysious

Heh. I want to see an Iron Claw.

    • R.J.

I wish he was here. Probably working and cursing us commenting slackers.

I should change my avatar to Beaker, the best muppet.

Did that guy really get his intestines pulled out his ass?

I can honestly say I’ve never seen that in a movie before.

    • R.J.

Well, you should hang around here more often!

  14. Aloysious

I’ve never seen a flasher get his junk ripped off either. Damn.

    • R.J.

Deathgasm, posted 2021. One of the most popular films I showed by comment count. Junk ripped off.

      • Aloysious

        *takes notes*

      • R.J.

If you look in the forum, there is the entire list of all films shown, by year with comment counts. I have not gone back and hyperlinked though. That would be a lot of work.

      • DEG

I forgot we had a forum. I can’t remember the last time I logged into it.

      • slumbrew

        Dear Glibertarians Forum,

I can’t believe this happened to me but…

  15. Ownbestenemy

We have a bumblebee friend. He actually comes to the window and wants the dogs to come out.

    • Gender Traitor

I’m thinking the dogs may not consider him such a good friend. 🐝

      • R.J.

I do worry about the cats taking swats at bees. So far they haven’t. Which is surprising.

  16. DEG

Was that NYC standing in for New Bedford in that aerial shot just before the jet fired its missiles?

    • R.J.

I am not sure. This was probably not widely shown in the US so you may be the first person who knew enough to notice.

      • DEG

I’ve never been to New Bedford, but that aerial view looked wrong for a city in that part of MA. Too big.

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

I’ve never been to England, but I kind of like the Beatles.

      • DEG

Wait a minute, I have driven through New Bedford. Once. Yeah, that aerial view doesn’t line with what I remember from that drive.

  17. Aloysious

These zombies aren’t giving 110%. They’re falling apart.

    • R.J.

The neon colors are special. Also the movie doesn’t end at the ending, very Marvelesque.

  18. DEG

    Well, that was….

    Um….

    different.

    • R.J.

Next week is a Hammer classic, followed by an Irish vampire film. It gets better.

  19. Common Tater

New Bedford, but no Cape Verdians or Cambodians?

  20. Evan from Evansville

I’m still adjusting to my new schedule! Didn’t pop in ’til now. Thanks R.J. for keeping this up. For many reasons, I intend on soon making a formal plan to write a Glib piece on a semi-regular basis starting soon. Big Talk w Older Bro tomorrow is actually part of my two-week ago bday. Should be an interesting one about many many things. A regular, craft-driven hobby is likely a profound ‘necessity’ for me to adapt to. Combining what I actively love, hangin’ w y’all, and something I’m professionally interested in and good at, writing, fits those bills.

I’ve worked professionally with UCS. I edited a fantasy novel of his (don’t want to doxx him) in 2018, a year before The Incident. I’d like to talk to him about that. There are plenty of other writers here. It would be a good place for us to talk shop along with our other foibles.

(Most of us graduating high school in ’78: …Dad was 29 and Bro was -2! Fun for me: Dad was 14 when JFK was assassinated. I was 14 on 9/11. Hrm.)

    • R C Dean

And I see it’s been fixed, which is nice, but that it happened at all . . .

      Yeah, Google delenda est.

      • Gustave Lytton

I don’t get the Twitter outrage. AI bot response? It’s the same thing over and over.

      • The Hyperbole

Fear of progress, It’s not just for weavers anymore.

      • Ownbestenemy

Think its a bit more than fear of progress. The underlying tones are you don’t need those silly instruments, just press buttons on the iPad to make music. Which, sure, it is a form of music but not a replacement as the ad implies.

      • Not Adahn

Haven’t watched it, not gonna watch it. The complaints are about how it’s going all Cultural Revolution/Year Zero.

      • Not Adahn

They’re also mainly from Hollywood types, which makes sense, since they’re going to be replaced by AI.

      • Grumbletarian

        Neither.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Not the greatest ad ever but not the end of the world. In the context of the iPad Pro, they’re pushing it as a video editing and composition device in a professional sense so it kind of makes sense.

      • Gender Traitor

Sonny & Cher > Cher solo

And I’ve seen MUCH worse commercials. (The bursting emoji is cute in a sadistic sort of way. Extra credit for crushing an Angry Bird.) In fact, I think I like it!

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

If people are getting bent out of shape about the gratituous destruction they could just run the video part of the ad in reverse. It’d make just as much sense that way.

      • Gender Traitor

I’ve seen people do much worse things to musical instruments…in many cases, by playing them.

  21. Gustave Lytton

McMillan and Wife is as good as Columbo. Not really a surprise. Rock Hudson as a SF police commish 🤨. Things I didn’t catch when I was younger.

      • Ownbestenemy

They do! I think its a male bumblebee, so no worry of a sting. The thing will come to our back window and hover and then flies all excited when they come out.

Yesterday, the company WizKids announced they were creating special line of Dungeons & Dragons miniatures based on iconic art that was created over the years.
Probably the most iconic piece of D&D art is Larry Elmore’s painting of a warrior charging a dragon, which was on the cover of the 1983 “Basic Dungeons & Dragons” boxed set.
The warrior’s back is to the viewer, shield in the left hand, sword in the right, ready to strike at the one-horned red dragon that is glaring down. The warrior wears some sort of fish-scale looking armor and has glamour-band style hair blowing in the breeze.

Since the face of the warrior isn’t shown, WizKids decided the warrior must actually be a woman.

    https://www.wargamer.com/dnd/character-mini-wizkids-red-box-warrior-female

    Which is fine.

Someone asked Larry Elmore whether he was painting a male or female, and he replied along the lines of “obviously male; I draw females in a different style.”

    An Elmore-drawn female: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ec/df/2a/ecdf2ad89e85704a14c5cec159a46cb1.jpg
