Talk about a rise and fall story.

Watching someone fly too close to sun in real time is never fun.

Nick Rekieta & Kayla Rekieta have been arrested on felony gun and drug charges. Facing 10 years each.

If this asshat was MAGA he would be in a cell with Bubba saying his vows…

      Damn. That’s heartbreaking.

Meh. 1: they appear to both be misdemeanors. Not felonies

    • R C Dean

Also his live-in girlfriend. If it wasn’t for the five kids he just fed to CPS, I’d say, “Eh, FAFO, don’t care.”

But he fed his five kids to CPS. So fuck him.

      • UnCivilServant

I need more information before assuming that is what happened.

      • R C Dean

Fair enough, UnCiv. A quick search shows absolutely zero info on this.

Yeah way too little to know exactly but damn.

Last thing he will be known for is the clip floating around of him quite wasted on camera appearing to Toobin it without knowing the camera is on.

      Two possible interpretations:

      1. A bit of internet fame really does destroy people.
      2. Absolute assholes can appear to be decent people when their assholery is primarily focused on targets I think deserve it.

I’m sure it’s a bit of both, but the latter element is huge. Just because somebody is a fellow traveler on certain issues doesn’t make them a good person. Uncle Ted is the most extreme example of this.

Uncle Ted is the most extreme example of this.

Who is this Uncle Ted you speak of?

      • PutridMeat

        The Nuge

        I though maybe Kaczynski

But Nugent is most often referred to as Uncle Ted, so I thought that was more likely. And couldn’t pass up the opportunity to POUNCE! on what makes The Nuge a bad person?

Honestly, I feel bad for the guy. I liked his show back when he was doing trial commentary. I’ve never been able to really watch his long form ramblings other than for some of the short clips where he has something really good to say. And he had a lot of good to say.

But he also said a lot of shit about a lot of people, and that’s going to come back and haunt him in a big way, karma-style.

I’m really sorry his kids are going to have to go through what they’re facing.

‘A Failed Medical School’: How Racial Preferences, Supposedly Outlawed in California, Have Persisted at UCLA

Frankly, this makes me recall the old black guy that once shared a hospital room with my mom, telling his son when I was visiting loud and without any doubt, that he wanted the same white doctor my mom had, and not the black one his son got him, and hen asked why, answered because….

Frankly I can now see that in the same situation I will want a male doctor from South Asia first, followed by a white male doctor, then a female doctor from Asia, and after that because of this woke shit, a different hospital.

    This woke shit is insane.

    • Drake

Yep – has people looking at every successful minority person and assuming they’re tokens.

      • UnCivilServant

Well, there are enough tokens out there that some of us are just playing the odds. If I recall, the demographic most opposed are those who would have made it of their own accord for that very reason. “No one thinks I know what I’m doing because of all these people who look like me who don’t”

      • R C Dean

That’s been the case since affirmative action was invented, unfortunately. It’s a brilliantly designed way to undercut every minority who gets out of the crab bucket.

Hundreds of non-citizens on state voter rolls, but Dems say GOP concerns are election denialism

The only time there is a problem with an election is when Team blue can’t carry their candidate over the finish line first. And anything and everything done to make that happen is legit.

    • OBJ FRANKELSON

Team Red needs to accept this and respond accordingly. Gaming the system that Team Blue built to be gamed isn’t a compromise of your values. Unless you plan is to continue to be the perpetual noble losers in the uniparty kayfabe.

      It’s the latter, isn’t it?

      • AlexinCT

        ,It’s the latter, isn’t it?

It’s a lot more lucrative and easy to be in the minority where you can make claims and promises you can never be held accountable for….

That’s why so many Team read old timers like being in the perpetual minority and turn a blind eye to all the cheating and abuse by team blue.

They are not there to do any real job other than make a lot of money.

      • juris imprudent

        never be held accountable for

Modern government in a nutshell. Even Democrats in the cities they have run for decades – and run into the ground – have no accountability because the voters seem to like it that way.

      • AlexinCT

I find it funny that you still think in blue controlled enclaves that voters matter.

Living in “The People’s Republic of Connecticut” I can tell you that in every urban area votes don’t matter a bit. All that matters is who is counting and what criminal activity they can get away with.

      • juris imprudent

Biden campaign to hire meme manager to help win the voters who are terminally online

Right, the problem is that these indoctrinated dumb kids are starting to realized the marxists gaslighted the fuck out of them, and now the real world is kicking them in the ass, would forget all the hardship immediately if they saw a cool meme…

Democrats’ Lawfare Campaign Against Trump Has Backfired

Being hardcore evil is not enough to hold power: you also have to be competent. Credentialed marxists have for decades never had to face challenges and prove their competence because they could simply accuse anyone in the way of racism/sexism/homophobia, and shut down and win any argument. They got dumber and cockier. And then that crap stopped working at the same time as their level of ineptitude has reached a level that they can now use it as the excuse for why they did evil shit and convince people that is fine.

    • The Other Kevin

The problem is reality is finally biting people in the ass. For decades the left kind of nibbled around the edges, and maybe Rush Limbaugh would call them out, but 90% of people would just ignore it if they even heard about it at all. Now they’re getting their way, and as usual going too far. It’s affecting people in their pocketbook, their kids at school, etc., and the results are undeniably a disaster.

    Celebrate diversity

Donald Trump drew one of the most diverse rally crowds of his political career on Thursday when he made a pilgrimage to a New York borough that rejected him by a whopping 68 points in 2020.

Winning New York state is the longest of long shots for the former president, while pulling out a victory in the Bronx is inconceivable. But trends that were apparent Thursday at Trump’s rally there echoed broader themes of the campaign that have Democrats nervous headed into the fall: that a small but potentially powerful share of Black and Hispanic Americans, particularly younger voters, may break from President Joe Biden and vote for Trump or a third party or stay home.

Winning upstate is hardly a long shot.

    • UnCivilServant

Upstate has less than half the voters in New York. People left to follow the jobs to free states.

Now if we’re going to talk ballots counted, that’s going to skew even stronger downstate.

Back in the US. It was refreshing to spend almost two weeks outside of the GAE (Global American Empire). So many things in Russia have improved so much since my previous visit. Sensei, it’s hard to tell. I doubt that a general mobilization would be meekly accepted. On the other hand, many of those who would be strongly opposed to it are already outside of Russia. The South Bronx rally was framed as an effort to reach out to minority voters, and the crowd was much more diverse than those at traditional Trump events. As is the case with other Trump rallies, however, many of the attendees were not from the area where the event took place.

    ——-

Democrats and Trump’s critics were quick to push back against the Bronx rally, with the Biden campaign even pre-empting it by releasing two ads aimed at “challenging Trump’s baseless claims about his accomplishments for the Black community” that are running in battleground states. The ads point to past anti-Black rhetoric and Trump’s effort to lead the so-called birther movement against former President Barack Obama, among other points.

In a statement, Janiyah Thomas, the Trump campaign’s director of Black media, said the effort was “another cheap attempt from the Biden campaign to gaslight Black voters” that “fails to address Biden’s terrible policies that are hurting our community.”

Fighting for the soul of the nation.

The Rev. Kirsten John Foy, president and CEO of The Arc of Justice, said while taking part in a counterprotest outside the rally that the idea that Trump is making inroads with communities of color was “a false narrative.”

“They’re pointing to polls that have questionable methodology,” Foy said. “They’re saying that Trump is increasing his support among Blacks and among Latinos, and we just see no evidence of that on the ground. As a matter of fact, people who were passing by wanted to know why we were here, and we told them why, and they decided to stay and join us, because nobody who is authentically from the Bronx is willing to co-sign hatred and xenophobia and misogyny and all of the things that this guy represents.”

U.S. officials are also bracing for North Korea to potentially take its most provocative military actions in a decade close to the U.S. presidential election, possibly at Putin’s urging, the officials said.

The timing, they said, could be designed to create turmoil in yet another part of the world as Americans decide whether to send President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump back to the White House.

“We have no doubt that North Korea will be provocative this year. It’s just a matter of how escalatory it is,” a U.S. intelligence official said.

Poor Joe. The world is ganging up on him. They should cancel the election, to preserve democracy.

    TSA Pre-check costs $78.

NEXUS costs $50 and includes TSA pre-check.

NEXUS does involve going to Canada for an interview, but the gas money spent will be less than the discount on Talisker at the Duty-free.

    • slumbrew

Global Entry is $100 (good for 5 years) and includes TSA pre as well.

(and my credit card covers that. Plus Clear although I haven’t signed up for that)

Getting an interview slot can take a while though.

      • Pope Jimbo

Mrs. Holiness and I have Global Entry. Now that I am not flying for business anymore, Mrs. Holiness thinks it is silly to pay the $100 for each of us. However, it easily pays for itself when we come back from Japan or Korea and get to skip the prole line.

And PreCheck for domestic flights is a must-have.

    • juris imprudent

Pre-check still can and will randomly send you through regular screening, so fuck it.

      • Not Adahn

I’m mainly considering it because of how long it’s taking now to get to Montreal.

      • juris imprudent

OK I must be missing something, I thought Pre-check was for flying. Does it involve driving across the fucking border now?

      • Not Adahn

NEXUS applies to land and sea canuckistani crossings too.

      • juris imprudent

Hell, you didn’t even used to need your passport. I don’t mind all that much using the passport, but I mind a whole fucking lot needing something more.

      • Not Adahn

You don’t need NEXUS, but that lane has much less traffic in it.

Pre-sillytimes, crossing the border would take maybe five minutes. Since the closing/reopening, it’s measured in hours.

      • juris imprudent

Both directions or only for returning. If Canada is asshole about me visiting I can forego that.

      • Not Adahn

The last couple of times, heading north took longer.

      • juris imprudent

What is the delay on driving into Canada? That’s purely the Canucks, right? Not American control of leaving.

    • Rat on a train

It was nice when the free pre-check included contractors and covered immediate family members.

      • slumbrew

There was a few-month period where I had gotten my Global Entry and my wife was still waiting for her interview.

I didn’t even giggle a little as I breezed through Pre-Check while she was stuck in gen-pop. She wasn’t super-amused by “I’ll see you in the lounge”, though.

      • R C Dean

I got Global Entry when I was still traveling overseas for work. I don’t travel enough to make it worthwhile to renew. When I pulled pre-check and Mrs. Dean didn’t, I went through gen pop with her. It wasn’t much difference. Last time I was at DFW, the pre-check line actually took longer.

I don’t like it in principle anyway. If gen pop is good enough for the little people, it’s good enough for everybody.

      • J. Frank Parnell

Pre-check is worth it because you don’t have to take off your shoes and belt and unload all your electronics, and then go through an old fashioned metal detector instead of the other scanner that – and ymmv here – would always trigger an alert for me and require a patdown.

    • Gustave Lytton

Nexus is a great deal, even though not covered by most credit card allowances unlike GE or PreCheck like JI says. We did it years ago, had a nice time in Canadia. CBSA officer did uncover my wife’s gunrunning activities in the interview though.

U.S. intelligence officials accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 election to help elect Trump. The Biden administration had tense relations with Russia, which collapsed after it invaded Ukraine in 2022.

With Putin expected to visit North Korea to meet with Kim in the coming weeks, U.S. officials expect them to solidify a new deal to expand transfers of military technology to Pyongyang.

Anyone want to take bets on the success of this transformative housing complex?

The site of the future housing complex is one of eight lots owned by the Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism (BLUU) Housing Cooperative, which were purchased in 2019. Each lot will house a multi-unit housing complex, and the complex will be cooperatively owned by the Black and Indigenous families occupying the units. This first complex on Logan Avenue, which is set to have three units, will be the home of single parent families who have previously rented with Urban Homeworks, a housing justice nonprofit partnered with BLUU, and who are seeking to transition to home ownership.

Members of the cooperative, said Gardner, will receive education concerning the expectations of living in a cooperative housing complex, such as how to maintain the upkeep of the unit. But while the first members will be single parent Black and Indigenous families who have previously rented with Urban Homeworks, the specific families who will move in have not yet been determined.

    Those dastardly obstructionists

President Biden bashed Republicans for blocking the border security legislation in the Senate Thursday, arguing that the GOP doesn’t care about securing the U.S.’s southern border.

“Congressional Republicans do not care about securing the border or fixing America’s broken immigration system. If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history. Instead, today, they put partisan politics ahead of our country’s national security,” he said in a statement.

    ——-

Biden, in his statement, noted that the bill would have hired more Border Patrol agents, immigration judges and asylum officers, as well as provided funding for technology to detect and stop fentanyl trafficking.

    Disappoint

Trump’s demeanor inside the courtroom has been a notable departure from the fight-at-all-costs persona that has defined him through decades of public life, fueling his transformation from a New York tabloid fixture to a onetime – and possible future – president.

And it has been at least partially strategic, according to people familiar with Trump’s approach who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case. Trump’s attorneys have warned him that behaving as he did in his previous trials — where he tangled with judges and stormed out — could damage his standing with a jury that is likely watching his every move and will determine his fate.

Acting out, he appears to have concluded, is not in his best interest, particularly as he faces the risk of imprisonment if he’s convicted.

This display of calculated rationality is not fair. They were hoping he’d rush the bench and bite the judge’s ear off, so they could triumphantly proclaim him unfit for office.

    • Ownbestenemy

      risk of imprisonment

If the judge is a true believer, he most certainly would go this route rather than a fine and probation for a paperwork error.

      • juris imprudent

Without the predicate felony, all of the paperwork errors revert back to misdemeanor and are moot for statute of limitations. You can be a hack, but I still can’t see how you get around that.

      • AlexinCT

Have the entire system be full of hacks and corrupt as fuck isn’t enough?

      • Not Adahn

The same way you can have fraud without a defrauded party — simply declare NY law doesn’t require it!

      • juris imprudent

I do have to assume that somewhere up the line, and obviously far too much removed from where simple competence should be, that the hackery runs out.

      • R C Dean

The judge has ruled that the predicate felony doesn’t even need to be specified, or at least that the jury doesn’t need to agree on what it is, just that Trump did something felonious.

    • R.J.

They were hoping he would misbehave and get thrown in jail for it.
These idiots seriously think that would make people think ill of him.

    • Not Adahn

Wait, you can’t be a judge unless you have both ears?

      • UnCivilServant

You didn’t realize that loss of an ear is a career ending injury for a jurist?

      • Rat on a train

    No more soft on crime

A Georgia prosecutor on Thursday appealed a ruling dismissing some of the criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and other defendants in an election interference case.

The notice of appeal filed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis does not say why an appeals court should reverse the March dismissal. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee quashed six counts in the indictment, including three against Trump, saying the counts did not allege sufficient detail regarding the nature of the violations.

The ruling was a setback Willis, though it left much of the sweeping indictment intact.

    ——-

Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) said the bill “will help revitalize the defense industrial base and build the ready, capable, and lethal fighting force we need to deter China and our other adversaries.”

  34. The Late P Brooks

But the committee’s bill does allow the Air Force to cut 56 A-10 Warthogs — low flying support aircraft that have long been saved due to its usefulness for troops in Afghanistan. The planes have recently been made obsolete with the U.S. withdrawal from the country.

They hate that plane, don’t they? It’s like your dad making you drive the old beater pickup truck instead of the shiny new Tesla Plaid.

But if Trump loses, you’ll still insist there is no fraud.

      • juris imprudent

Depends. The Republicans didn’t play by the new rules last time, they will this time – unless of course the rules change again at the last moment to advantage the Democrats.

As far as I can tell about PA there was no fraud, and Trump even improved in some of the bluest areas (Philly and Pittsburg proper), held the most rural and lost in the suburbs.

I do have a difficult time accepting assertions of fraud where Republicans hold the relevant offices – say GA for example. And I remember how this was planned to be Trump’s excuse for losing in ’16. So invoking that, when he had already played the card – yeah, I want serious proof.

It is my nature to be skeptical.

      • UnCivilServant

I remember how this was planned to be Trump’s excuse for losing in ’16.

        https://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37673797

Mr Trump has questioned the legitimacy of the election process in a series of tweets, the latest of which said on Monday: “Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day.

“Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!”

An earlier tweet said: “The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary – but also at many polling places – SAD.”

Judges at the top United Nations court ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its military assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, in a landmark emergency ruling in South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide.
While the International Court of Justice, or World Court, has no means to enforce its orders, the case was a stark sign of Israel’s global isolation over its campaign in Gaza, particularly since it began its offensive against Rafah this month against the pleas of its closest ally the United States.

Lawtubers (sympathetic to NR) suspect the self-representation is only for the bond hearing and that they will retain their own counsels for further proceedings.

    Crimes against god and man

It was the mid-1970s, three decades after Midgley’s death, before the damage from his two inventions became publicly known. CFCs had punched a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica; if left unchecked, the hole would have expanded to the point of eventually threatening all life on Earth.

    Fire up the time machine.

    • Gustave Lytton

Gaia healed! Not, the ozone hole problem was overstated and supposed permanent hole isn’t quite so permanent.

    • Ownbestenemy

Wait wasn’t the whole hole in the ozone a big lie in terms of how it was presented?

      • UnCivilServant

        Yes, 100% a lie.

Ozone did not naturally build up around the polar reaches because the sunlight that causes the formation of ozone in the upper atmosphere was well absorbed by the time the rays reached that area – but that also meant that there was no gap in the protection from the more harmful rays since that sunlight followed the same path…

Striving for growth and innovation at all costs was reflective of the conception of progress in the first half of the 20th century, Markowitz added. “Only with the environmental movement that started in the 1960s and 1970s did we begin to consider what the consequences of technological progress could be,” he said.

“That has had a really sobering effect, but up through the 1950s there were very few voices questioning the idea that progress was our most important product.”

Capitalism is the true villain of the story.

Far better that we just allowed more people to die from heat stroke and spoiled food.

If I remember correctly, the Ozone Hole was discovered just as the patents on Freon and the like were expiring. New, expensive, refrigerants with long patent lives remaining saved the planet from UV incineration and inexpensive refrigerants.

There was a snow shovel leaned against the wall outside my front door. Unbeknownst to me there was a giant squirrel perched on the shovel handle. When I went to open the door the shovel slid over and this monstrous squirrel was staring at me. It then started as to leap off the handle to try and get in the house. I managed to slam the door shut, sending the shovel and the squirrel flying with howls of what I assume were fear. Three other giant squirrels in the yard took notice and came over. The entrance to my house is now being patrolled by squirrel beasts out for revenge. Maybe I’ll see if I can escape out the back door.

As I recall from this episode of Rick and Morty, you’re going to need to move to a new timeline.

Too many edibles will do that to a person.

I’l be over here lounging on the fainting couch, pretending to be surprised.
