So much excitement here this week. My phone went off with a Weather Service emergency notification. TORNADO WARNING. Now, it strikes me that we’re not in a high risk area, being surrounded by hills and up a couple thousand feet. And here’s a trailer park right outside of the town which would certainly be a lightning rod. Nonetheless, the shrieking warning instructed us to go to the basement. I looked outside- nope, the sky did not look tornado-y. None of the characteristic freight train roar. My poor puppy was freshly post-op from their transition surgery this past Monday so they were looking like they didn’t want to be run down two flights of stairs. Fuck it, I told myself, and poured another glass of wine. And indeed… we got a little rain (the default here this time of year), maybe a tepid thunderclap, and that was it.

This seems like a good metaphor for government.

Birthdays today include the Catholic Joe Biden; the spirit animal of Hamas; a guy who did it before Spencer Tracy; the guy who taught me how to speak German; a guy who spent more time on the ground than he did on the floor; a guy who demonstrated that even if you burn your food, people will buy it; an actor who was insufferable on camera and in real life; a guy you don’t want flying your airplane; the true Free Byrd; a true square, and more; and a guy who knows how we roll.

So lets roll into Links.

I will concede that he’s gotten much better at trolling this time around.

I know, let’s give them a few hundred billion more tax dollars. Because nobody is skimming it for their own enrichment, nossir.

The author list of this propaganda piece is another sign that CNN isn’t even trying anymore.

Fingers crossed, but even if they got him, this will still be spun by the Jew-hating Left.

We need to provide subsidies for people who move in order to mutilate their kids.

On theme, we’re really, really having to strain to get outraged.

Wisdom from one of our intellectual giants.

Can you imagine what this would fetch on eBay?

A local-ish band whose songs I listen to a lot. This one in particular recently.

  8. PutridMeat

This seems like a good metaphor for government.

There are no consequences to over selling risk – ‘an abundance of caution’, ‘safety first!’, ‘your safety is our only concern!’ – and lots of consequence to ‘underselling’ it. If you’re wrong and disrupt peoples lives and precipitate a chain of events that leads to negative impacts down the road, well it’s hard to connect those to your actions and ‘better safe than sorry’ anyway. If you’re wrong in the other direction, we have lots of lawyers to take care of that. You don’t face consequences in one case, and can face life altering consequences in the other. All upside, no downside.

Except the pervasive, diffuse, general decline of the health and robustness of your society.

Not sure which comes first, the drive to less responsibility and consequence or safety first culture, or if it’s just a big circle jerk of self-enforcing wankery, but safety culture is at the root of so many of our general cultural ills. Probably a general feature of human psychology writ large when societies become as large and dispersed as ours.

What a week. Major radar outage was waiting for me after coming off of vacation on Monday.

Electrical, networking, signals…I am an excellent technician. Mechanical? Not so much but can do it.

Both motors on the radar were failed, which is odd. Turns out that there have been some changes over the past 40 years that were not completely captured in some of the logic circuitry schematics.

After much reading it came down to a electronic clutch thay we had powered off drawing too much current for the operational clutch to engage.

Yesterday was a 16 hour ordeal of rain, wind, humidity, heat, back to wind, rain…rinse and repeat.

From what I can gather, it got dismissed because of some evidence relating to other live rounds on set, which is a total side issue, if not distraction, from him point a gun at somebody and pulling the trigger. Which leads me to two thoughts:

The prosecution was, indeed, stupid for not disclosing it, since it wouldn’t affect the main part of their case.

The judge was looking for any reason at all to let him off the hook. I’m pretty sure she could have said it was an issue for appeal or a mistrial without prejudice. But she jumped at the chance to let him walk.

Looking for an Idaho Ranch For Sale? Featuring 450± acres and over a mile of frontage on the lower Boise River, Parma Lodge and Stables is among the Northwest’s premier equestrian, sporting, and lifestyle properties. The ranch is conveniently located 45 minutes west of Idaho’s capital city of Boise and 20 minutes from Treasure Valley Executive Airport in Caldwell. Building improvements are of impeccable quality and highlighted by a 9,000± square foot owner’s lodge overlooking a series of interconnected, year-round lakes, and an 18-stall horse barn that is the centerpiece for one of the west coast’s most successful thoroughbred breeding operations. Other improvements include a four-bedroom manager’s residence, a custom-built wooden training/breaking pin, equipment storage buildings, and a large shop building that supports various land management operations and hunting activities on the property. The ranch holds excellent senior surface water rights from the Boise Riverand Sand Hollow Creek to irrigate approximately 320 acres of cropland, horse pasture, and wildlife food plots. The Parma area is a coveted destination for waterfowl and upland bird hunters from around the region. Utilizing multiple wildlife water rights, the owners have developed extensive habitat on the ranch that attracts and holds a multitude of ducks and geese through the season, as well as quail, pheasants, and wild turkeys. The property is not covered by a conservation easement at the present time. However, because of its size, location near Boise, and potential for development, it is a prime candidate for one.

“A Florida mom has been charged with inciting a 500-person riot at a skating rink after calling on her daughter’s friends to “tear this bitch up” when her kid’s birthday party was canceled, according to police.

Stephanie Pedroso, 36, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly sparking the chaos at Astro Skate in Brandon in May after the rink canceled her booking for an “after hours birthday party” for breach of contract, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Pedroso made the reservation on May 14 for the May 17 event for her daughter’s birthday, but failed to secure off-duty deputies for the party as agreed upon in the contract, leading to the cancellation.

Pedroso was issued a refund, cops said.

However, an outraged Pedroso posted an expletive-filled rant on her daughter’s social media account encouraging the girl’s friends to show up at the rink anyway.

“For y’all, if y’all still go up there, tear the f–k out of them. I’ve got some money for y’all, and I’ll pay y’all ass,” Pedroso said in the video, according to police.”

It’s dawn at the foot of the Otay Mountain, and the heat is already nauseating.

Even this early in the morning, temperatures near this 3,500-foot peak reach triple digits, with this whole section of the U.S.-Mexico border under an excessive heat warning.

Into this baking wilderness hike volunteers with Borderlands Relief Collective, a group of private citizens from the San Diego area who deliver water and first aid to migrants crossing into the U.S.

Almost as soon as they start climbing up the mountain, the group encounters a man sitting on the side of the road. He breaks into tears when he sees the volunteers approaching with water.

He is dehydrated and wearing shoes too small for his feet. In broken English, he says his name is Taleb, and he’s from Mauritania. Before NPR can get a last name, he’s rushed aside to receive care.

Nonetheless, the shrieking warning instructed us to go to the basement.

You’ve unlocked one of my pet peeve rants!

In the attempt to give people as much lead time as possible, the NWS has gotten really soft on what constitutes a tornado warning and what sets off the tornado sirens. Granted, they have different levels of tornado warnings now, but that’s not usually communicated very well.

IMO, they should go back to using tornado warnings and the sirens for when they have indications of an actual tornado on the ground. They need a different category of alert for “the sky is spinning, so a tornado could drop at any time” to avoid tornado warning fatigue.

We’ve been under probably a dozen tornado warnings in the past year. We’ve had 2 tornadoes within a couple miles of the house in that time frame. One an unwarned landspout and the other got a “Potentially Dangerous Situation” tag. Thankfully it was nice enough to lift before the trailer park.

Anyway, point being that we could’ve easily been lulled to sleep by the dozen radar indicated “velocity couplet” warnings and not taken decisive action when the real deal was bearing down on us. I’m a weather nerd, so I know the difference, but the average person doesn’t.

    • Ownbestenemy

A lot of people don’t understand the difference between: ‘storm potential for rotation’, ‘tornado watch’, and ‘tornado warnings. Also, TV Tornado Weather Reporting is nearly a sport in OKC.

As OMWC alluded to, you don’t need a weather radar to inform you of impending tornado because there are some pretty telltale signs and the reliance on the weather guys or government to instruct it’s citizens is more damaging IMO.

    • Old Man With Candy

The one actual tornado I experienced… no sirens, no warnings. We heard the noise, and SP and I ordered everyone to the basement immediately.

The list of more than two-dozen “everyday American” speakers shared with NBC News includes a number of immigrants and Black Americans, part of Trump’s continued efforts to make inroads with groups that have leaned against Republicans. Many of the speakers will argue that President Joe Biden is responsible for challenges they have faced, including the impact of the fentanyl crisis, economic hardship and domestic divisions over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Multiple speakers have a history of political activism and running for local or state office. The lineup also includes several former Democrats, some of whom voted for Biden in 2020.

One speaker described in a convention announcement as a “lifelong Democrat” is business manager of Steamfitters Local 638A, Robert “Bobby” Bartles, Jr. He attended the former president’s recent New York City visit with construction workers.

That’s cheating. “Everyday Americans” hate Trump.

    They’re hysterical

President Biden’s reelection campaign rallied against Meta Friday for lifting the restrictions on former President Trump’s Facebook and Instagram.

In a statement first provided to The Hill, the campaign called the move “greedy” and “reckless,” arguing that it is an attack on democracy to include the former president on the popular platforms.

“Restoring his access is like handing your car keys to someone you know will drive your car into a crowd and off a cliff,” Charles Lutvak, the Biden campaign’s national spokesperson, said. “It is holding a megaphone for a bonafide racist who will shout his hate and white supremacy from the rooftops and try to take it mainstream. Without question, it is a direct attack on our safety and our democracy.”

“This greedy, reckless decision will allow Trump and his MAGA allies to reach more Americans with their fundamentally undemocratic, un-American misinformation,” he added.

Legal experts say the decision could affect the government’s ability to regulate food, medicine, telecommunication and worker safety, among others. But the implications for environmental regulations are particularly stark. That’s because the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act were purposely written vaguely to accommodate for future problems.

Or maybe they were intentionally written with no clear and specific goal, so they can be perpetually expanded and revised in order to increase the power and scope of those agencies.

    SCIENCE!

A new brain-imaging study of young adolescents has shown that sex and gender map onto different brain networks. The findings, published on Friday in Science Advances, demonstrate the importance of considering the social impact of gender in neuroscience research rather than conflating it with physiological sex.

“Moving forward, we really need to consider both sex and gender separately if we want to better understand the brain,” said study co-author Elvisha Dhamala, a neuroscientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, in a recent press conference.

Physiological sex is largely determined by chromosomes, genes, hormones and other biological systems. On top of that, cultural ideas about what it means to be, for example, a man, woman or nonbinary person—what we call gender—also play a critical role shaping people’s life and behavior. Scientists understand sex and gender to be related yet distinct concepts, but they are often conflated in neuroscience research. This means that differences between the brains of people who are assigned male or female at birth are often taken as reflections of biological differences when they could very well be the result of how each group is treated based on cultural expectations.

Finally, the researchers compared the networks associated with gender differences with those associated with sex differences. They found that while there was some overlap, these groups of networks were largely different from one another, though this difference was only statistically significant for the parent-reported gender data, not the self-reports. (The study authors think the self-report questionnaire was not sensitive enough to capture differences in how children think and feel about their gender.)

Maybe a bunch of 9 and 10 year old children thought questions about their “gender identity” were silly and meaningless.

Children’s brains aren’t fully sexed. Many of the differences don’t happen until puberty.

In addition to the effect on home distilling, it could also be used as a platform to reverse Wickard.

I think the judge is wrong, in that the 21st amendment clearly leaves it to the several states to regulate alcohol.

OK, the feds might not be able to ban it, but states can

      • UnCivilServant

I prefer the judge’s rationale because it can be applied to pushing back elsewhere.

I do agree that the 21st removed alcohol from federal remit.

I would say that rights are inherent to individuals and neither the feds nor the states are granted power to violate those rights outside the fifth and fourteenth amendments.
