Tonight! We take a look at life through Woody Allen’s eyes! Also a question to TPTB: How the heck do you add captions to pictures now??!?!?
Woody Allen has gone through many phases throughout his long film career. The films I enjoyed the most were his early films like Sleeper and this one. I feel like it was important to bring up his early work, as a number of you are younger and only know about old Woody Allen and his boring old guy films. Or, maybe you only know about the many controversies around him (Long form article, beware). I can tell you this, Bananas is not a boring old guy film.
What you will realize watching this is that commie revolutionary bullshit has NEVER changed, and today feels very much like 1971 when this film was made. Even the beards are back in fashion.
So what is this about? I shall steal a description from IMDB:
Fielding Mellish (a consumer products tester) becomes infatuated with Nancy (a political activist). He attends demonstrations and tries in other ways to convince her that he is worthy of her love, but Nancy wants someone with greater leadership potential. Fielding runs off to San Marcos where he joins the rebels and eventually becomes President of the country.
Oh boy. A story as old as time. Beta male lusts after politically active woman. If only Fielding had cut off the hippie hair, lifted some weights and ate a few hamburgers he would have found somebody else and been happy. But then we wouldn’t have this great movie!
So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary until commies steal your country! Next week: I don’t know about you, but I have had enough about politics. I need an excellent comedy to blow off some steam. Balls of Fury!
As a personal note, we are now only one show away from the GlibFlick’s Third Anniversary Extravaganza on August 15th! It will be a fantastic affair, with cake, balloons and drinks. At least for me, I don’t know what you folks are doing.
Help! Tubi Stole my Remote!
Tubi cannot steal your remote. Stop eating the mushrooms you grew in the basement. Most likely it is in the couch you pawned to pay rent. Now if you cannot get the movie to play, we do have crack autist Glib technicians standing by to potentially help you, or just be pedants about your use of the English language. BY PEDANT MEAN…
“It will be a fantastic affair, with cake, balloons and drinks.”
Same here, but no cake or balloons.
I’ll save you some.
Dang…sorry I missed the PM links – had to get a haircut.
Re: the inflatable space habitats – one previous suggestion is to make them several layers thick – and fill in the space between outer layer and inner layer with water (turns to ice if punctured) and other materials for radiation protection. Metal foam is a recent development that would also be very lightweight and very strong.
It’s good that you got a haircut. You don’t want to be a damn dirty hippie.
Drill weekend…
Absolutely.
Though to be fair, I have never sat through any of his later pretentious crap.
I’m not a fan of his later rom coms, but some of the crime dramas are good. Match Point is great.
Overall he has had an amazing career. I still think his earliest films were his strongest. Rewatching this really shows what a talent he was.
Right after their divorce, my mother took me to see The Purple Rose of Cairo. I hated it.
Yeah. Don’t hold it against him. See these much older films.
National Review, lol.
I was just thinking about this a few days ago. The part where he’s on the sidewalk in NYC waving the guy backwards into the parking spot.
*CLUNK*
“That’s good.”
Woody Allen was actually funny, once upon a time. Let’s not forget What’s Up, Tiger Lily?
Yes and with his serious stuff I really liked āCrimes and Misdemeanorsā.
Take the money and run,
Soap guns, of course
“Zelig” was my favorite, also If you never have, read his books, “Without feathers” is particularly good if you like the absurd, they are like Umberto Eco’s essays but you don’t have to think/know as much.
Many years ago a woman maybe 4 years younger than me wore a tie to the office.
I said, āgoing for the Annie Hall look, huh?ā She and most of the office had no clue what I meant.
Of course neither did half the office.
Meanwhile we have āManhattanā a 42 year guy dating a 17 year oldā¦
My favorite line.
Suck out the blood.
You gonna die.
I can still see that guy’s face.
“SUCK OUT DA POI-SON!”
Oh, I forgot about the “official interpreter.” How reality mirrors film.
I also feel like āThe In-Lawsā owes a debt to āBananasā.
The new update on the Arknights mobile game is pretty interesting. Great video clip as usual – gorgeous animation.

Mmmm. Bananas.
PAY ATTENTION!
Honey HarvestĀ® is right around the corner. Third Sunday in September which makes it 9/15 this year. Seriously. The first is on a Sunday. Go figure.
I will be sending out the first email oā deets shortly. If you think you have what it takes, shoot me an email at minnetundra@ geeee mail and I will make sure you are included in the exclusive, yet inclusive, list.
Thank you for your time.
If you come with a truck you can go home with a load of campfire wood, nice and dry.
Except for MikeS, he gets a plow to use as a lawn ornament.
Dang…I forgot about that plow.
If I get there early enough, I’ll swing by as soon as I get to Crosslake and grab a few bundles of wood for my campsite. Save me a few bucks.
Glad to see you posting again.
Good to see you! I’m looking forward to Balls of Fury. And whatever you have planned for the big anniversary!
Anniversary is a surprise, almost new and kick ass. I hope to be at Honey Harvest too, if I can swing it. I need the details to plan it. Most likely I will have to fly in/out.
That’s great RJ! I really hope you can make it. It’s always a good time. A bunch of introverts acting as extroverted as possible for as long as possible before making up an excuse as to why they must leave.
Not me, though.
Every year, Fourscore has to lure MikeS into a live trap (along with his brother) and then drive them all the way back to NoDak to release them. It isn’t as bad as it sounds. Mike and his brother Matt are usually a bit slow after whooping it up in Nisswa the night before.
I’m totes bummed that I won’t be able to make it this year.
I’m trying to send at least one of the Altar Boys there so I can retain the title of Grand Old Man of the HH (Fourscore doesn’t count because Grand doesn’t do him justice).
āAlso a question to TPTB: How the heck do you add captions to pictures now??!?!?ā
Click on the picture. In the bar above the picture you will see a square with three dots across the bottom. Click that. You should be able to figure it out from there.
Sadly, that did not work. WordPress failed me.
here’s what I remember….what I think I do…I’ll audit myself next time
write everything in Word in plain text
go to WP, create new post
go to top left and hit plus button?
find toggle on traditional editing mode
copy paste everything into one block from Word
go back to that plus button and scroll down to Media to insert same just like Grandma did
format all
save often
preview for laptop
preview for cellphone
edit for fit
save some more
hit something like Send or Submit
hit that same button again when it changes to Submit or Go or whatever
reward yourself with Lagavulin
“reward yourself with Lagavulin”
This is the only really important step.
I write it up in Word, copy and paste into a blank WordPress page, and go from there. Where I want to put a pic, I hit enter (which creates a new block), tell it the block is for media, upload the pic, size and center it, put on a caption as I described, and move on.
Tonight’s commercials are for Chevy or Ali Baba. Huge improvement over government COVID shot commercials or drug ads.
YouTube is absolutely overflowing with Momala ads. Thank goodness Ad Blocker kills them, but before it does I get a half-second view of her lying face every time I start a new video.
Horrible. No politics on the smart TV tonight. Otherwise I would be watching on Brave.
Sounds like a good time to stop watching TV/YouTube/Hulu/Pluto/Prime/Whatever and read a book.
I’ve been reading Dune: Messiah and Henry Martyn.
Now it’s movie time, and f*ck work. I am having another drink and contemplating the failed timeline of another million dollar project.
I watch educational videos on YouTube. Much better than reading stupid fiction nonsense.
That was for Hypeā, RJ.
AdGuard FTW. No trace of ads on Youtube.
I’ve bounced around with different ad blockers. Don’t think I’ve tried Ad Guard yet. Will try it now.
TW: It wasn’t free
Rhy’: I just got the free browser extension and so far it’s better than AdBlock. No half second view of Momala. Thanks for the tip.
Ah cool! Yeah now that you mention it I guess there are free versions that are targeted at specific browsers. I discovered that when looking for something for my phone. The one I paid for a while back is a computer-wide version i.e. it works for any browser.
I saw they had a Windows version, but thought I’d start small.
The real test will be how quick they respond to YouTube changes. Every so often YouTube would stop AdBlock from working, and then AdBlock would take a few weeks to get ads blocked again. Hopefully AdGuard is quicker on the draw.
I don’t get ads with Tubi. I use a laptop using uBlock connected to a 4K TV that only cost $200.
Was that Sylvester Stallone on the subway?
It was his first film role. He had to convince Woody Allen that he looked tough enough. Woody was not initially convinced.
If KK is around:
re: ‘new post link’, I’m not sure if there’s an easier way but you can get the most recent post ID via the API:
> http ‘https://www.glibertarians.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?per_page=1&_fields=id’
[
{
“id”: 127166
}
]
and compare that to the current post ID; I have an unmerged Monocle branch that includes
const postId = $(‘link[rel=”shortlink”]’).attr(‘href’).split(‘=’).pop();
If the two don’t match, there’s a new(er) post.
Not sure if there’s a better way to do that these days.
https://developer.wordpress.org/rest-api/
Like the rest of you, I’m more of a backend guy (giggity), so my Monocle hacking would make Brendan Eich cry, but I did update it to use the REST API to check for new comments for the auto-refresh using a lightweight HEAD request vs. pulling down the whole set of comments on each refresh.
But it never got merged because Safari (maybe just Mobile Safari) just would insist in caching the results, so I couldn’t get a timely response. And then an informal poll made it sound like nobody (but me) uses auto-refresh anyway.
I’m out of cycles right now, otherwise I’d be game to reuse some of those changes for resurrecting the new post buttons. Let me know if you want repo access.
(I remain surprised there’s not a single JS developer here).
That was for Hype’, RJ.
Sāalright.
JS is the work of the devil. Hell, all that front end crap is.
Nobody in their right mind would design that stuff from scratch to be so confoundingly r-tarded.
I remain mystified by the popularity of Node.js
I guess if you already know JS for the frontend stuff, using it on the backend too is convenient.
But I share your disdain for the language
I’ve never had to use it professionally, thank God.
I do mostly APIs and database stuff. All M$ and .NET. I feel sorry for coworker kidz who do Angular and nonsense like that. My God I would slit my wrists.
It is so much better now than it used to be.
I remember trying to cobble together crap for the front end that work in every browser. It was ugly. Same with CSS styles (FUCK YOU IE!)
At least now most browsers implement it somewhat in a similar fashion.
I only understood bits and pieces. Am I to understand you are trying to get Monocle/Eyepiece’s Dynamic Comment Refresh to work again? If so, you have my thoughts and prayers. Sorry I can’t give anything useful. Godspeed
It’s more or less working, I just don’t know if anyone uses it.
KK was asking about the long gone ‘next post’ button Monocle had – we could probable hack that back into being.
Some sort of Monocle user survey/wishlist may be useful…
Are you working on Monocle or Eyepiece? I’m using Eyepiece as I thought it was the last one Trshy worked on so was the most up to date. Dynamic Refresh is not working at all for me. I miss it.
If only there was some kind of forumā¦ Where people could post a spreadsheet of future work itemsā¦
Eyepiece, really. What os/device and browser are you using?
RJ, good suggestion – I always forget about the forum. (‘Dear Gibs Forum, I never thought this would happen to me but…’)
I’m using Vivaldi on a Windows laptop.
I’ll have to add that combo to the list for testing.
My wife is going on a work trip for about a week so I may be able to stay up way too late futzing with Eyepiece during that time.
This stuff is black magic to me, but I do know Vivaldi is built on Chrome. Whenever I get extensions for it, I go to the Chrome ap store. FYI
Thanks for the explanation, slumbrew! IIRC someone (Gender Traitor?) had figured out it was a simple z-index value, and not related to the actual functionality. Or, I could be making that up from whole cloth. Anyhoo, I also possibly recall someone had a solution that they updated locally.
Overall, I like the new website, but it sucks that one or two reply levels got nixed.
Hello MikeS. Looking forward to seeing you at Honey Harvest.
Hey, kinnath! Look forward to seeing you, too! It’s become a good tradition.
It does, Neph started some best practice where you start deep-nested comments with the name of the person you are responding to.
best practice
@RJ this isn’t deep, but I like the idea
but I think citing the most important notion you’re responding to is even more important that the guy
R.J:
Started? Just brought back over from the (really) old days at TOS, no threads, just one continual list of comments in timestamp order. It hearkened back to my old BBS days, so I latched onto the style. Besides, it’s a low cost method to add precision.
@Neph: āI summoned the Neph!ā
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ry9jfgyaQzM&feature=kp
I quote the relevant passage instead, saves me a couple keystrokes thanks to Eyepiece.
rhywun:
That works too. I prefer a reference just so I can follow the thread.
Awww…my little thing that goes up on my avatar doesn’t go up anymore.
I think you can get pills (delivered in discreet packaging) that can help with that.
Domo arigato
I hope everybody enjoyed, I have to prep for another joyous workday and stop drinking martinis. Comment away! Gardening tips? Food recipes? Whatever makes you happy.
Those fucking bunnies are gonna die!
Yes
Huh?
The Rev is a gem.
Nice!
MikeS:
Seen him damn near a dozen times, always a good show. Learned about the Goddamn Gallows at a show the Rev had to back out of. The venue had the openers play, and the Rev put on a two set show for us later that year.
DrOtto:
To go down a rabbit hole can be fun.
Neph
That’s some good stuff. Thanks for sending me down a new rabbit hole…I think
The Rev rocks because he has not one but not two but ….
THREE different Jimbo songs!
Gardening tips?
Just the tips?
Yard light came on with the extension cord. Next step is to find where the other electricity went.
How’s the honey crop looing this year? I assume all the rain raises expectations?
How is Schmitt lake (and creek)?
When I’ve been backup up in DL, the water levels are insane.
Kamala’s YouTube ads make me think of a not-particularly bright high school girl gearing up for the debate club.
Now you are making me want to watch one or two. No more than that, though.
She only wants $5, so she’s much cheaper than downtown.
No you don’t want that.
She is uniquely off-putting.
She comes across as utterly harmless, which is kinda scary on about 16 different levels.
Ugh I’m watching two sportsball matches and both are in weather delay.
There must be a ping pong match to watch.
I watched a few minutes of that a couple days ago. They’re so serious about it; it doesn’t even look fun.
Tonight’s earworm. You’re welcome.
š¤® Damn Mormons.
heh
lol
The 70s were so weird.
Comment *Alternative earworm
(Need to fix that ‘*Comments’ thing too)
I like them a lot but that weirdo at the NHL winter classic a few years ago was so bizarre and off-putting. Dude you’re in front of a national audience now, no need to be eCeNtRic.
My earworms are very different than yours.
Closer to that style of things
slumbrew:
When I want to go dark with it.
Ted’S level hate music link
Ted’s wishes he could come up with something so heinous.
Howdy, pal.
Aw, you really do love me. š„°
If Kamala is the Aldi Obama, these are the Aldi Osmonds.
Scandinavia weighs in on an ear worm.

Ghaa! Y’allins confusing me with yer high falutin’ hypertext, how about some COBOL?
Thanks for the link to the long form article, RJ. It was very informative.
Wow! What a great find R.J. I haven’t seen this movie in decades.
Beards are back in fashion?! Now you tell me.
1) Love early Woody and his stuff for the last twenty years. Can skip most of his output in between.
2) wife has dubbed the VP “Kamal-toes”
3) last year with the pup has been ups and downs. A few ups and a lot of downs. At the point of needing to make awful decisions. Tomorrow is her birthday.
Re: 3) – Sorry to read that.
I present to you, my fine XY denizens of the Glibuniverse, Movie monologues that changed my worldview. Uniquely male. These are the kinds of things I depend on to help me write male characters.
Nice
Good morning, Glibs. I ran across this song while working out last night. Great if you need to get your mindset right.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqmh8dVJ8Dk
In the midst of identity politics clashing with sport in a fit of ignorance, someone posted a link to Imane Khelif fighting for the world championship. She loses to Ireland’s Broadhurst.
Khelif I not a very skilled boxer. She has very little defense, and her jab is little more than a slap. Her right is inconsistent. But when she actually gets her form right, she has significant power.
She’s built like an average not-particularly-athletic teen boy. 5’10”.
Her boxing strategy seems to be that she’s not afraid of punches from women and she will hit hard enough to intimidate her opponent at some point.
The Irish fighter handles her fairly easily by having solid skills on defense, staying busy enough on offense and having enough power to back Khelif up, and being tough enough to endure some straight rights without running and hiding or giving up.
https://youtu.be/Wc6HqPbJtJA?si=VNYaKFcPe0Du1glj
Lost or not, shouldnāt have happened if he has a Y chromosome. Maybe heās honed his skills in the meantime, that was two years ago.
He has very little defense, his jab is little more than a slap, etc.
Happy Friday Morning folks!

Gonna be another warm one around these parts.

Good morning, Sean, U, NA, Stinky, cyto, and Grumble!
Morning, how goes?
Well, I just confirmed that payroll hit, so I won’t face the wrath of my coworkers when I get to the office. How about you?
Well, I made it to the office. Because of the initial agitation from the mouse in the trap, I’m overreacting to every inconvenience I’d shrug off on a normal day. ie, things like the card reader not liking my first attempt to pay for my breakfast (but being perfectly happy with the second try).
I had intended to bring my mp3 player into the office to find out if the audio error I’ve been hearing recently is there or in a different part of the car setup. (The mp3 player is the most expensive part of the car setup, so I suspect it’s fine, but isolating the root cause takes actually separating the parts and testing each in turn)
Sorry to hear that your mouse problem reared its tiny little head. I hope it was just from the power company’s visit and you have no more snapped traps.
š¤¬
š
I woke up to find amouse caught in one of my snap traps. I am not sure if it got in while the basement was open so the power company could inspect the gas meter, or if they snuck in via a different route.
(Yes, I left the traps out for years. They weren’t in my way and told me there were no mice running about.)
Get a terrier.
And some earplugs. Yap! Yap! Yap!
suh fam

Good morning, homey!
By the way, a little old and too local, but did you hear that our Clerk of Courts is going to have to become a “customer”?
Mornin’ All
Cooling off, looks like the summer heat wave is over. Seems early though, maybe it’ll kick back up again. Turned the AC off yesterday, wasn’t too warm in the house. Old people like it a little warmer anyway.
Good morning, 4(20)! Hope atmospheric conditions remain to your liking!
Morning all.
Fourscore: “…looks like the summer heat wave is over.”
Sadly it is just getting cranked up good here.
Morning. Went to a movie in probably a decade. Saw Deadpool and Wolverine. Glad Renyolds was able to skewer Disney and Marvel as much as they allowed. Particularly funny is the joke about cocaine and not being able to show it but they made sure there were plenty of reference to it.
8/10 if you want to watch two dudes just having fun making a superhero movie
4/10 if you think you are getting a lifeboat to the superhero genre.
How many out of ten if you want to see the superhero genre murder itself?
10/10 of course. Its tired, worn, killed then brought back to life in a husk. Thinking about it, this movie was a reskinned Lethal Weapon in many ways
Which of the two is Leo?
Iām gettinā too old for this shit Riggs.
What’s the rating for people who don’t watch movies, hate crowds, and haven’t been to a theater since 2008 and even then just to appease a visiting relative?
Last movie I saw the theater was Borat. Itās not so much the crowds that get me, itās the floors that are sticky enough to pull your shoes off.
Weird.
No way! Biden has a tradition in their family where they sing “Happy Birthday?”
As I understand it, being a ābeta maleā is actually a pretty good deal.
It means that you are the alphaās right hand man, and you get the good looking girls, too (the best looking girls are for the Alpha). You are probably handsome, you just lack the desire to engage in combat that the alpha has. You arenāt driven.
The Deltas are what most men are. Average-looking and willing to do the grunt work.
Sigmas have all the advantages of the alpha, excepting the friendship. Sigmas are lonely.
The Gammas are who you have to watch out for. They tend to be smart, but there is always something slightly off about them. They are quickly relegated to the friend zone by women. They consider themselves secret kings; that is, they think of themselves as being the ones best able to run things. Gammas want to think of themselves as sigmas, but they arenāt quite as talented and smart as they believe. They will be friendly to your face, then stab you in the back.
There is a couple more, one for homosexuals, and one for social outcasts.
