Friday afternoon getting into a groove links

Sunday, the girlfriend and I wrapped up the weekend by going to see Save Ferris with two opening bands. Both of the opening bands were local ones from Akron. The second of the opening bands (Massive Hotdog Recall) who played such hit songs as We Are the Ugly. A fun time was had by all, and the girlfriend even got a kiss on the forehead from Monique. I did facepalm at the little blurb from the venue about the show:

Playing the Ballroom this Sunday July 28th is Save Ferris. (The band’s name is a reference to the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!)

I would be remiss if I didn’t wish you all a happy International Beer Day.

Here’s hoping Timm hasn’t decided to burn all the good will he built up with the DCAU. So far, the Penguin change is the only one that really isn’t working for me. It’s just not the Penguin. They should have created a new character (or reused an old forgotten one) for that role. OK, I’m also not a fan of having Bullock being on the take, but that’s just making him completely loathsome.

I told you guys we take Christmas in July seriously around here.

My favorite show with him is Jack of All Trades.

Your regular reminder that gentrification bad!

Why do I have a feeling this person would clearly explain why this is good personal property and not evil private property.

“Damn these electric sex hiking pants!”

“Stop antagonizing my horse. You’re not allowed to do that. You can’t interrupt my animal.”

In breaking news, Ohio will have recreational marijuana sales starting on August 6th.

Tomorrow night, I’ll be checking out one of the newest cocktail bars in the Cleveland area, the Kraken Room. Looking over their menu (as I generally do before going to a new place), one drink jumped out at me:

Hit the Deck!
OIL WASHED TOP SHELF LONG ISLAND MIX: KETEL ONE, SUAVECITO BLANCO, BACARDI SUPERIOR, HENDRICK’S, COINTREAU. SUPER SOUR MIX: YUZU, LIME, ORANGE, LEMON. GOMME SYRUP, COCA COLA GLAZE, CITRUS INFUSED ICE CUBES, BRÛLÉED LEMON WHEEL GARNISH
LIMIT TWO PER CUSTOMER

Personally, I love when a bar takes an old derided drink and classes it up. You can either go through all the work they’re doing, or just go with the classic, which is a perfectly cromulent drink.

Long Island Iced Tea

  • 1 part vodka (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part rum (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part tequila (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part gin (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part triple sec (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part simple syrup (0.75 oz)
  • 1 part lemon juice (0.75 oz)
  • Cola (traditionally, it is of course Coca Cola) to top

The standard method is to build it all in a Collins glass filled with ice, and give it a brief stir. As it’s got simple syrup in it, I would put everything but the Coke cola into a shaker, and give a brief shake or two to get it integrated and then top with the cola in the glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge and a feeling of shame for getting white girl drunk.

Why yes, Save Ferris did in fact play this song, as they came back for their encore.

    Ahh, OC, MD.

Let’s be real, we need to hate everybody here. It’s 2am and these guys feel compelled to blast music. Cops were actually going to let them go, but these guys failed to “respect my authoritah” and hilarity ensued including equine hijinks.

    • Nephilium

Agree across the board. That line, and the fact that the guy is pursuing it through court entertained me enough to include it. There’s not exactly strict editorial control over what we put in the links.

      • Sensei

Oh I have no issues with it being a link. It’s perfect for it!

    • rhywun

I didn’t read to the end but I hated the perps more than the cops at the point I left off.

      Nah.

Sounds like the police horse was about as well trained as the typical police dog. Or police officer, for that matter.

Of course not. A proper pour would be between 1.5 and 2 ounces.

    Foregone conclusion

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to become her party’s nominee for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said Friday.

The announcement was made before the online voting process ends on Monday, reflecting the breakneck speed of a campaign that is eager to maintain momentum after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed Harris as his successor less than two weeks ago.

Harris is poised to be the first woman of color at the top of a major party’s ticket, and she joined a call with supporters to say she is “honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee.”

“It’s not going to be easy. But we’re going to get this done,” she added. “As your future president, I know we are up to this fight.”

Democracy at work. All Hail Kween Kamala!

    • PieInTheSky

No French cars please. I had a Renault back in the day that was so unreliable it made a Fiat look like a Toyota. European cars made in romance language speaking countries are a no go.

I bought an 80-something Toro Goundmaster 72 lawnmower from a buddy. Turns out these things have the exact same engine that were in the LeCar. I don’t need any engine parts, (knock on wood) but from a cursory search online it looks like if I do it’ll likely involve international shipping.

        I miss my Citroen.

    ARRRG!

Took me a while to figure out why my linux box appeared to be repeatedly shutting down every ten minutes.

First I thought it was heat, but the machine is running ~40C constantly, which isn’t in the thermal warning threshold.

Picking through the kernal log, I found that it was not shutting down, but going to sleep.

Turns out, it had gotten it into it’s silicon brain that the UPS was discharging when it was instead fully charged and on wall power. I had to unplug and replug the usb link to the UPS and switch it back to balanced power mode where it doesn’t just go to sleep and shut down the DNS, DHCP and CIFS daemons I run on it.

  13. The Late P Brooks

The Democratic National Committee did not provide details of the delegate vote count, including a number or state-by-state breakdowns, during a virtual event that had the flavor of a telethon, with campaign officials keeping tabs on a delegate-counting process whose result is a foregone conclusion.

    Fairest most honest election ever.

    • The Other Kevin

I don’t think the Dem voters even care. The party’s sole purpose is to hang on to power no matter what, even if it means breaking every rule. Their voters seem to be ok with that.

      • rhywun

Right? The only complaint I’ve heard so far from BLM of all people, and I guess they’re already outlived their usefulness.

        Whee!

Unrelated, is the core of the Hakko Omnivice solid metal? These suckers are heavy.

Also – “Made in Japan” – Sweet!

    • PieInTheSky

Sweet – you are not supposed to eat it

      • UnCivilServant

An Omnivice isn’t cheap. I was worried I was going to get Chinesium for my cash.

Getting something Made in Japan was a nice change of pace from what most products end up being. I wager these things will last forever from the feel of the construction.

  18. Derpetologist

I declined the other teaching job offer I got today. Felt kinda bad about it, but I must do what’s right for me. It was a nice ego boost that a college was interested in hiring me. I’d have worked as a math teacher at the charter high school affiliated with the college. It took them 2.5 months after the interview to make me an offer, so I decided that I’d be happier at a smaller school with less bureaucracy.

My job at the private school starts full-time on Monday. I feel good about it. Way too much down time these past few months.

I have 4 missed toll payments from my road trip to Maine last month. No bills have arrived in the mail yet. I tried to pay them online, but there was no option for it. I don’t mind tolls but it does annoy me when I can’t pay with cash. A brief stretch of I-95 passes through NH and there are toll plazas at both ends. It’d be cheaper just to have one in the middle and charge 2x as much. I guess that would make too much sense. Last time I missed a toll was in 2018 for 287 in NY. I was able to pay online. They removed that option for some reason. In 2015, I had a road trip through New England and was able to pay all the tolls with cash.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

    ***
In March 1999,[65] Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-mail payment company with $12 million of the money he made from the Compaq acquisition.[66] X.com was one of the first online banks that was federally insured, and over 200,000 customers joined in its initial months of operation.[67]

Musk’s friends expressed skepticism about the naming of the online bank, fearing it might have been mistaken for a pornographic site. Musk brushed off their concerns, emphasizing that the name was meant to be straightforward, memorable, and easy to type. Additionally, he was fond of the email addresses derived from it, such as “e@x.com”.[65]

    Makes sense.

  20. grrizzly

Biden almost flew to Russia yesterday.

    • MikeS

He went up to thank the flight crew. If this Ian Miller person was 10% as honest as he demands from politicians he disagrees with, he would have deleted his tweet and corrected himself.

      • grrizzly

It’s a plausible explanation for a non-senile politician. With Biden… I’m not so sure. Also, the flight crew did nothing special, they just flew from Ankara to DC. Are they thanked for every routine flight?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Hey Fat, thanks for not crashing.

      • MikeS

This was not a “routine” flight on account of the passengers.

There are a multitude of reasons to dunk on Senile Joe. This is the MAGA version of Dems “fact checking” every insignificant bit of hyperbole that comes out of Trump’s mouth.

      • grrizzly

Actually, the plane was empty. The flight crew was standing on the tarmac to the left of Kamala. You can see them in the video starting from 0:24.

      • MikeS

Haha. OK, so you might possibly be onto something…now. It’s great you got change the narrative and “be right”. Good job. You and Drake got a big win today.

Mrs. TOK loves Wonder Woman. She has shirts and water bottles and stickers and everything. I am definitely NOT showing her that.

    • MikeS

      Wait…now she’s White?

      • Sean

        It’s her Irish side. Duh.

    • Suthenboy

Queen of chucks and pearls? What does that mean? Pearl necklaces?
They constantly point out that she is not white…portrayed there as a white woman?
They open themselves up to the embarrassment of Trump selling a zillion mugs (like the one I am sipping out of now) and being stuck with train cars full of unsold Kamalamadingdong merchandise?
Who came up with this idea?

    • R.J.

Oh Lord I hope that doesn’t change my Etsy suggestions.

    • Grumbletarian

Is it bad that I initially thought they were tampons?

  21. MikeS

    International beer day?

…hmmm…I think we better wait for ‘Murican beer day.

    • Nephilium

October 27th for you then. That’s a bit of a wait for a beer, can I offer you a cocktail while you wait?

      • MikeS

Yes. Yes you can. I am also prepared to pre-party for ‘Murican Beer Day

  22. MikeS

From the assisted hiking pants article:

Marketed as a mobility device that can help hikers extend their range instead of a medical device that can assist those with mobility issues

The “journalist” couldn’t just report on the damn pants. Had to throw a little woke tsk-tsk in there. Arc’teryx is ahigh-end hiking gear supplier. Yes, they are going to market them to hikers with money.

    • Suthenboy

They dont have to have it approved by the FDA as a medical device. Buy them and hike or not, do what you choose.

      • slumbrew

Exactly – “Nosireee, this is to help hikers and totally not some sort of general assistive device in need of regulation”

    • MikeS

I get that everyone has a preference here. Coke/Pepsi, Ford/Chevy, Bud/ Miller…etc, ad naseum. However, when making bar drinks, substituting Pepsi for Coke drastically changes the drink. Pepsi is much flatter and sweeter than Coke. If you want to drink Pepsi, knock yourself out. But if you sneak that into my drink, I’ll have to speak to your manager.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Pepsi is sweeter (has less sugar though) and has more of a citrus flavor than Coke’s vanilla dominance. If I want to drink straight malted battery acid Pepsi’s my choice but Coke’s by far the better mixer. RC too if you can get it.

    • Gustave Lytton

Coke for Cuba Libre or Jack and Coke or whatever. But Long Island iced tea is Pepsi. It’s fucking coed panty dropper not a cocktail. Sweet Pepsi is the proper topper.

      Y’all are heathens here.

      • Beau Knott

You’re just now figuring that out??

  23. The Late P Brooks

My mule doesn’t like it when people laugh at him. Now if you’ll just apologize to him…

  24. The Late P Brooks

    Welcome, Comrades

A family of Russian sleeper agents flown to Moscow in the biggest East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War were so deep under cover that their children found out they were Russians only after the flight took off, the Kremlin said on Friday.
“Before that, they didn’t know that they were Russian and that they had anything to do with our country,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“And you probably saw that when the children came down the plane’s steps that they don’t speak Russian and that Putin greeted them in Spanish. He said ‘buenas noches’.”

    That would kinda suck.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

How many languages does that fucker speak?

  25. Grumbletarian

It’s just not the Penguin. They should have created a new character (or reused an old forgotten one) for that role. OK, I’m also not a fan of having Bullock being on the take, but that’s just making him completely loathsome.

My thoughts exactly. And they have Barbara Gordon as a defense attorney.

I’m almost waiting for Bruce Wayne to be Batgirl and for Barb Gordon to become Batman.

    • The Hyperbole

Wasn’t Bullock the bent cop in Miller’s “Batman year one” or was that a different bent cop?

      • Nephilium

Probably, he was always bent, but he had his limits. In this he was firmly in the pocket of the mob. I did finish the series, and enjoyed it.

Barbs as a defense attorney kind of worked, especially as they made Dent a lot dirtier than he usually is.

    • R.J.

He’s playing the long game. Halfway into the series the Penguin will trans and become a man. Him/Penguin. Genius!

    • Nephilium

I’ve been to Seventh Son, but never did the tour (since I’ve seen more than enough brewery tours). I may have to rethink that.

I have also been warming up to randomly stopping at distilleries to see what bizarre things some have come up with. Favorite so far has been the Red Maple, distilled from fermented maple syrup.

      • MikeS

Yeah, I stopped doing brewery tours long ago. (made an exception recently for Leinenkugel’s) I’m a fan of Spoetzl, so them being in the article caught my eye. Moving forward, I will definitely at least see what the tours involves before rejecting them out of hand. Glad to see some folks are trying to mix things up a bit.
