IFLA: The “Dated Pop-Culture Reference” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of Feb 2

by | Feb 2, 2025 | IFLA | 83 comments

I was so very, VERY tempted just to repost last week’s column and take the rest of the week off. But that’s not what you don’t pay me for, so here’s some stuff. I’ll still be leaning heavily on the Bull Murray crutch however.

See? Leaning on the crutch already.

This week is remarkably positive. Interestingly enough, one of the big celestial events is a Jupiter going from retrograde to direct motion which is a sign of an improvement in government. Huh. Unless the stars are wrong (and they are never wrong) this will be most noticeable on Thursday, when the moon amplifies the change. But we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Today starts off particularly nice if you’re partnered off. Enjoy it. Then that Thursday moon-Jupiter alignment kicks off a cascade of good things with soldiers coming home on Friday (Mercury-Mars retrograde) followed up immediately with

So many reversed cards this week. And cups! Dry January must be over.

Aquarius: The Moon reversed – Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.

Pisces: Knight of Wands – Departure, absence, flight, emigration. A dark young man, friendly. Change of residence.

Aries: Queen of Cups reversed –  Distinguished woman but one not to be trusted; perverse woman; vice, dishonor, depravity.

Taurus: The High Priestess – Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed, a woman you’re interested in.

Gemini: The Devil – Ravage, violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality

Cancer: 2 of Cups – Love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, concord, sympathy.

Leo: Blank. Figure it out for yourself.

Virgo: Justice reversed –  Legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity.

Libra: Judgement* reversed – Weakness, pusillanimity, simplicity, deliberation, decision, sentence.

Scorpio: Page of Cups reversed – Taste, inclination, attachment, seduction, deception, artifice.

Sagittarius: 10 of Cups reversed – Repose of the false heart, indignation, violence.

Capricorn: 3 of Cups reversed – Expedition, dispatch, achievement, end, excess in physical enjoyment

*in case you’re wondering why Justice and Judgement are two different cards an earlier name for the latter card is “The Last Judgement” which is why the picture has an angel blowing a trumpet over a graveyard.

I wish I had those skills, I got the abrasive, off putting, transparent personality starter pack.

      “abrasive, off putting, transparent personality”

      Hawt.

You are very much not my target market, but hell I’ll take the W.

“ Cancer: 2 of Cups – Love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, concord, sympathy.”

    That’s a bit on point. 🍑

The sooper bowl is next week.

Temp ~40; the forecast snow has thus far turned out to be rain/sleet, and I am not complaining.

  5. The Late P Brooks

…the world comes to an end on Saturday??

Isn’t there a meteor out there somewhere?

    I remember the fuzzy vest.

    Bull Murray crutch

    I don’t believe I’m familiar with that.

    • R C Dean

Some kind of euphemism? I can’t keep up.

  8. juris imprudent

Distinguished woman but one not to be trusted; perverse woman; vice, dishonor, depravity.

One woman, or two? And you’re really threatening me with a good time.

    • juris imprudent

And the better half, Expedition, dispatch, achievement, end, excess in physical enjoyment

We don’t leave until Saturday, but that’s a promising start.

  9. The Late P Brooks

    Shame! Shame, sirrah!

Trump responded to the deadliest American aviation disaster in decades by baselessly blaming diversity initiatives, demonstrating his willingness to shoehorn tragedy into his personal political crusades.

Only the basest scoundrel would do such a thing.

  10. Mojeaux

Taurus: The High Priestess – … a woman you’re interested in.

    Um …

    • Ted S.

It doesn’t say romantically. Perhaps some disaster could befall Aunt Selfish Cunte.

      • Ted S.

Having said that, “the future as yet unrevealed” is a cop-out because the future is going to come for every astrological sign.

Or, as put in the opening to Plan 9 from Outer Space, “We are all interested in the future, for that is where we will all spend the rest of our lives.”

      • Mojeaux

Oh, a disaster is indeed about to befall Aunt Selfish Cunt—Hurricane Enraged Niece.

      • juris imprudent

“We are all interested in the future, for that is where we will all spend the rest of our lives.”

Kamala Harris was raised on that?

      • juris imprudent

Hurricane Enraged Niece pecking? [flees while cackling]

      • Mojeaux

Oh, yay. Busybody financebro church leader and his wife are coming over to visit Mom in an hour. I’m torn. The wife is the only eyewitness to the abuse Susie visited upon my mom and they cherish each other. But financebro himself is the one who was exhorting me to come to the negotiation table. There is not only nothing to negotiate, there’s no table. Dude, you’re acting as a church leader, not a paid professional. This is waaaaaay above your and the rest of the churchbros’ pay grade.

      • Mojeaux

Hurricane Enraged Niece pecking? [flees while cackling]

        I don’t get it.

      • Mojeaux

Oh my bad. I’m not as sharp as I usually am, for some definitions of “sharp.”

So not looking forward to the stock market performance tomorrow.

    • Spudalicious

Well, what happened with Fridays futures? That should be an indication. Everyone has known the tariffs were hitting yesterday?

      • Urthona

The stock market is actually still betting that Trump is not an idiot and the tariffs will be short lived.

      • juris imprudent

Does IRS even have the staffing and knowledge?

      • Fourscore

“The stock market is actually still betting that Trump is not an idiot”

A bet I’m not willing to take.

    • Jarflax

The tariffs don’t make economic sense, or political sense, except as leverage to force some concession, or as an, I believe misguided, bludgeon to force US industries to bring production back to the US that they have outsourced. If the latter is the goal, then the Canadian tariffs make very little sense to me, the Mexican do make some limited sense in that area. So I am sincerely hoping that this is aimed at the first goal, although I am unable to see what the concession desired could be in the case of Canada. But I don’t know what I don’t know, so with all the policies I have liked so far, I am willing to wait and see on this one which I dislike.

On the other hand it may just be playing to the more ignorant parts of his support, or actually intended as a revenue raising measure, in which case it will almost certainly be a political disaster, unless the price increases it will create can be offset by very visible, income tax cuts, very quickly, and I am skeptical about the revenue raising potential of tariffs this large, and selectively applied.

      • Fourscore

Comparative advantage, how does it work?

      • UnCivilServant

Very poorly in reality, since there are no honest actors and free trade is a mythic pipe dream of the ivory tower economist.

  12. Raven Nation

Well, I’d like to say “suck it, Pep” again, but it’s getting kind of boring.

So not looking forward to the stock market performance tomorrow.

The time to buy is when there’s blood in the streets.

I have been watching a couple of specific stocks. If they go down I’ll pounce.

    *twirls moustache*

    • Fourscore

If Mr Pelosi is selling those particular stocks it may be time to wait.

My ex was telling me that the Pelosis dumped NVIDIA a couple of days before the DeepSeek announcement. Can you imagine being so lucky?

We Taurus-folk are coming out of the woodwork… The mysterious future is likely the vet gig I’m starting this week. As long as I can mostly avoid some hip-issues, it should be fine. Having a professional presence again after a two-month absence? Certainly necessary and I’m interested in further training they can hook up.

Worst-case Ontario, it’s not demeaning if I legit *do* need to quit in the future, if my legs rebel against the cleaning and other duties. My plan is to see if I can mostly do the receptionist shit. They get paid more, anyway, frankly, and more clerical work is certainly desirous.
The woman? Well. When I went on Friday there were a couple young lasses I’d be happy to warmly reveal. Far more than money at this gig, getting out in ‘the world’ is highly necessary. I’ve been Stateside since mid-’22, and it’s highly problematic, and embarrassing, that I still don’t have any friends over here. That is predictably unhealthy and just, ugh. Quite legitimately depressing, frankly.

Adventures are such for a reason. This place is also in fancy Westfield, pretty much the ‘exact’ opposite of my last gigs in plasma centers.

  19. The Late P Brooks

My ex was telling me that the Pelosis dumped NVIDIA a couple of days before the DeepSeek announcement. Can you imagine being so lucky?

    Clean livin’ pays off.

    • Urthona

I’d buy the dip on that one, though.

      • Jarflax

Mind sharing your reasoning? I struggle evaluating tech companies because I can’t shake my conservative assessments of p/e and growth projections.

      • Urthona

I’m not say it will quickly return to what it was, but it will not stay that low because:

        1) very obviously, deep seek was using an absolute crapload of nvidia chips and lying about it for trade reasons.

        2) even if them werent, it means dozens of new startups can do exactly what they did creating yet more nvdia chip demand.

        3) it’s lesser business of consumer video card chips is still uncontested and yet another generation no one is competing with is releasing right now over the next few months. No one is without a mile of them.

      • Urthona

        4) the nvidia chips actually already contain the American kind of “AI” in them meaning this whole AI scare may be a tad overblown.

      • Jarflax

My thoughts on it aren’t based on worries about Deep Seek. I think it was pricing in too much forward looking optimism about AI in general. The consumer side is strong, although I dislike their planned scarcity approach with highly marketed releases like the 50 series. I am not convinced that it benefits anyone but the card scalpers.

  20. robodruid

So how long do us feds have?
    DOD-Environmental.

  21. The Late P Brooks

My thoughts on it aren’t based on worries about Deep Seek. I think it was pricing in too much forward looking optimism about AI in general.

    • UnCivilServant

I keep hesitating. How many thousands am I going to be trapped on a boat with?

      • KK

        3000

      • UnCivilServant

        😭

Still… I want to visit iceland and see the eclipse. I wonder if it would be better to visit iceland before or after the boat ride.

      • UnCivilServant

They won’t book me a room for one person.

      • KK

Oh shit. And our Fearless Leader® Shpip and wife

      • KK

Meant as a reply to Jarflax.

        Carry on…

      • Jarflax

They won’t book me a room for one person.

Yeah, I think you can book for 2 and just not have a 2nd which is what I’d be doing. No roommates for me, especially none I don’t know lol

      • UnCivilServant

Will they charge you 10k for that though?

      • Jarflax

They charge for the room, the per person rate quoted is the room rate divided in half (the actual charged fare looks to be divided unevenly 1st passenger rate looks to be about 2/3 2nd appears to be 1/3). Sort answer yes.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m wondering if it might not be better to book a hotel on land and view the eclipse from the city. I’m having bad memories of feeling trapped in Reno. Even there I wasn’t as trapped as I would be on a ship.

    • Jarflax

Who all is going so far? I’m not a cruise guy but I’d like to meet Glibs and this looks interesting?

      • KK

Looks like me, Nick & gf, Neph & gf, Evil Sheldon (he needs a roomie!!), me and a girl bro that y’all don’t know, and Tulip. I think that’s everyone. Unless Annoyed Nomad & wife snag a spot.

Full fare isn’t due until May 2026, BTW.

      • KK

Evidently two of me are going

(don’t mind me…my brain is gone bye bye)

      • Brochettaward

        Tulip still owes me cookies.

      • EvilSheldon

Hit me up on the forum if you’re a potential roommate. You too, UnCiv!

      • UnCivilServant

Sorry, Sheldon, but I need to be able to withdraw from human contact. Otherwise I’d just go mad. I very much need to book a solo room.

      • Jarflax

I have a reservation on hold as I ponder whether to break my I no longer fly rule and my no cruises rule and my never lock myself into things in advance rule lol. I selected the top end all included options and the total is just under $12k. UCS, I share your need to be able to retreat trait so if I go, I am good paying double to have my own space.

      • EvilSheldon

Being quite introverted, I did a solo room for Glibscruise 1.0, and honestly, it wasn’t worth the extra $3k. There turned out to be tons of places to curl up in an oversize armchair with my iPad. The outdoor upper deck, the library, and the coffee bar were all excellent spots. The only human contact was the occasional waiter inquiring if I needed another cappuccino or G&T.

      • Jarflax

I struggle to sleep with anyone else in the room. That’s my biggest issue honestly. Especially someone I don’t know well

      • UnCivilServant

I nearly gave myself an anxiety attack just thinking about it. Normally that only happens in large, loud crowds, or when I feel trapped.

    • Mojeaux

      KK? dafuq

    • Evan from Evansville

(That’s exactly what ‘She’ would say, eh?…)

I wish I could go on the Iceland cruise, or just fly there and explore inland. Not too expensive, and a remarkable chunk of land I’ve wanted to visit since I was a kid. Parents took me and bro on a Caribbean cruise in ~’95 and Alaska may have been summer of ’01 before Everything changed. We weren’t rich, though nothing close to poor, but they really only spent money on travel. Bro goes to Disney on the kids’ 4th bdays, which I get, but I hung out with his best friend last night, who takes his boy to Disney apparently 4-5x *a year.*

That’s the only place they travel. Such Bubble People, my generation, definitions of Good Times creating Weak People. Oooh, brings up a fave band closing their ‘best’ album. Such drugs. Much awesome. (Also ties in with modern pharmaceutical witchcraft.)

“Fed up with all that LSD
Need more sleep than coke or methamphetamine
Late nights with warm, warm whiskey
𝐈 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞”

  23. Suthenboy

China and AI: Never underestimate your enemy but keep in mind this is the country that has tanker trucks full of green paint going around spray painting empty fields to fool spy satellites into thinking they are having a bumper crop. They also built trillions of dollars of fake cities in the middle of nowhere. WTH?
Everything they do and say is fraud and scam.
