Fire and Ice

The one thing I haven’t done in four years is show animation. To honor our new President, who wants to Make America Great Again, I need to play some good old ‘Murican animation! Something with some serious T&A for both sexes and most proclivities.

How does one summarize Fire and Ice? Lots of rotoscoped actors and actresses running around in skimpy outfits! Swords and Sorcery! Aerial Pterodactyl battles! And a soundtrack which should probably be updated to some heroic heavy metal. I will leave that to you. Post some better music for this film!

Lucky for me, Nick Raganas @ IMDB provides an excellent plot wrap up:

As the blackest of magic, summoned by the evil megalomaniac Lord Nekron, gives birth to a towering, ever-growing glacier, the remnants of humankind flee south, seeking shelter in the temperate, volcanic realm of generous King Jarol. With the unstoppable glacial mass devouring everything in its path, war draws nearer, and King Jarol’s resilient and resourceful only daughter, Princess Teegra, finds herself in harm’s way. More and more, the suffocating stranglehold of Nekron’s sorcery tightens around the last of the survivors as his beastly minions emerge from the bowels of the Earth. Now, to save raven-haired Teegra, the young defender, Larn, selflessly embarks on a peril-laden quest in the heart of a hostile, monster-ridden land, risking life and limb to thwart Nekron’s sinister plans. If Fire and Ice meet on the blood-soaked field of battle, who can guess the outcome?

This film was produced and written by a major proponent of animation: Ralph Bakshi. He has done some great work. Most of it is not sword and sorcery. He has a great back catalog if you have not seen many of his films. It is quite difficult to find any on free streaming though. If you definitely like subject of tonight’s film, seek out Lord of the Rings and Wizards, also by Ralph.

As you look at the artwork for tonight’s post, you may be asking yourself – Did Ralph Bakshi lean on the artwork of Frank Frazetta to design this film? How about this – Frank Frazetta helped to write this film! He only wrote scripts for two films: This one, and Vampirella in the 1990s. And yes, Frank was a huge influence on the art.

Now, what brought me to want to post this film? I was at the National Video Game Museum with my daughter, and she wanted to try to play Dragon’s Lair. For those unfamiliar, that is one of the most frustrating laser disc games ever made. Yes, she didn’t even make it in the castle after blowing two tokens. That game was by Don Bluth, but so reminded me of this film that I had to seek it out. And speaking of seeking it out, here is the complete movie of Dirk’s adventures in Dragon’s Lair, a feat that probably took somebody 1,000 tries.

So watch! Or Don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week, I will… find something else to play. I am about 30 days out from having a house again and it is just too difficult to plan ahead for movie posts. How about Ice Pirates?

I believe I tried to watch this on VHS sometime in the late 80s and failed to make it more than 15 minutes.

    • R.J.

How about Vicious Lips? Have you seen that?

      • Sensei

Never heard of it. But I did watch “Fritz the Cat”.

  2. rhywun

Yes, she didn’t even make it in the castle after blowing two tokens.

I blew a lot more quarters than that but I doubt I made it more than 30 seconds in.

  3. rhywun

OT… why the fuck is Team USA 🏒 playing in Canada when Team Canada got to play last night… in Canada?

Although it does explain why the announcer felt the need to tell the audience not to boo during the anthem.

      • slumbrew

The Finns and Swedes can suck it, of course.

      • Ownbestenemy

I laugh at the past couple years of NHL “we want inclusivity monies” and running only a 4 nations tournament

      • slumbrew

“Well, we were gonna include the Russians…”

      • rhywun

I am amused that of all the heinousness around the world only one nation is effectively banned from polite society worldwide.

And I thought American Empire was dead.

      • slumbrew

Last night’s game ended up being great. Fantastic effort by the Swedes.

      • Common Tater

“I am amused that of all the heinousness around the world only one nation is effectively banned from polite society worldwide.”

Didn’t Carter pull the U.S. out of the Olympics because Russia? Sure, fuck over American athletes who dedicated most of their lives to someday compete in the Olympics.

      • Ownbestenemy

Sure, fuck over American athletes who dedicated most of their lives to someday compete in the Olympics.

15 year old OBE agrees as the NHL and Olympic committee agree to allow professionals in.

    • Ownbestenemy

This has happened before. America boos Canada, they us.

Shit, we disrespect our own anthem by injecting shouts at certain points 👉 Vegas Knights.

Stand in silence for 2 minutes you shitbags.

      • rhywun

        America boos Canada, they us.

Really? I’ve never noticed it until OMB came (back) on the scene and Castreaux and that idiot who runs Ontario got all tuffgai.

      • Ownbestenemy

Heard it a few times. Maybe more so now? I grew up singing both cause the game so it is odd to me booing either

      • rhywun

I grew up on “the north coast of America” so with friends on both sides. Booing an anthem is just dopey.

      • Common Tater

        “Castreaux”

        LOL

    • slumbrew

These aren’t the national teams, BTW. All NHL players.

      • Ownbestenemy

Where is my Slovania team dammit! Kopitar will run the gauntlet!

  4. Evan from Evansville

Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings is a find effort, though utterly lacking to the animated Hobbit. Partly/ mostly for the same reasons as the books: The Hobbit is 236 pages and *should* only be one movie, not stretched out over three and ~10 hours.

I wouldn’t mind if Princess Teegra, or many others, attempted to suffocate my power with her sorcery. (I’m hard to tame.)

    • SarumanTheGreat

The original animated Hobbit movie was far more faithful to the book than the Peter Jackson efforts.

  5. Common Tater

“And a soundtrack which should probably be updated to some heroic heavy metal. I will leave that to you. Post some better music for this film! ”

From the poster, I’m going with Molly Hatchet.

      • Common Tater

Pretty sure it was only three.

  6. Tres Cool

I hope this is what spawned “Heavy Metal”. Someone was like “we need to do better”.

      • rhywun

        That looks impossible too. 😱

      • slumbrew

        It was brutal.

      • rhywun

I still hate games that are too hard. I like to claim that I sometimes rage quit because I’m an old fart who doesn’t have the patience of a thirteen year old anymore but fuck… Dragon’s Lair was the original rage quit.

      • Aloysious

Loved playing both those games back in the days of the arcade.

Did they kick my butt? Oh yeah.

      • rhywun

Oh hell every game kicked my butt but some were more fun than others.

Galaga was probably my favorite. Or its circular cousin Gyruss but that one was harder to find.

      • R.J.

I still love Crazy Climber. And Astro Battle.

      • J. Frank Parnell

        I remember Space Ace.

I also remember one other laserdisc game, which had footage from some anime. IIRC it started out with you sitting at a cafe, then a helicopter showed up and started shooting at you, you jumped in a car and tried to escape by going into the sewers, then the helicopter followed you down a giant sewer tunnel until a samurai came out, jumped over your car, and sliced the rotors off the helicopter and everything exploded. I got past that, but the next scene where you were chasing a car and the driver kept throwing grenades at you always killed me. Only place I ever saw it was at a Keno’s near my dad’s house, so I would play it on weekends when we went out to breakfast.

      • DrOtto

I could routinely put up top score on Galaga wherever I found a machine. Same with Spyhunter. I played other games but excelled at those 2.

      • cavalier973

        J Frank Parnell:

        Sounds like Cliffhanger.

      • rhywun

Galaga was the only game I was halfway decent at – not even close to “high score” material but good enough to not blow too many quarters on it.

Never heard of Spyhunter. … Oh some sort of car game. Yeah I went for the space games.

      • Ownbestenemy

Spyhunter, now there is a name I haven’t heard of in a long time.

      • slumbrew

        Spy hunter was fantastic.

      • J. Frank Parnell

        Sounds like Cliffhanger.

        That’s it!

Weird, looks like the grenade-throwing scene was before the samurai scene, but I know I got past the samurai. I don’t remember the ninjas in the next scene, though.

      • Atreides

I always found the gameplay of Dragon’s Lair, and Space Ace, to be a little too tricky for my tastes.

It was cheaper to sit home and watch the Saturday morning cartoon of Dragon’s Lair.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJHguqOpPGQ

      • rhywun

        the Saturday morning cartoon

I had no idea that existed. And good grief it looks terrible.

  7. Aloysious

I loved this movie as a teen.

    Watched it many times.

I think I read somewhere that FF did some of the acting for the rotoscoping. I’ll have to try and look that up.

  8. Mojeaux

Bro1’s surgery did not go well. His tumor was all wrapped up in mesentery and lymph nodes and they couldn’t cut it out. He’s at stage IV colon cancer. They’re going to do chemo and then take another shot at surgery. He’s being very (too) optimistic about his chances. Google disagrees.

    • Ownbestenemy

      Yikes.

    • slumbrew

Damn, sorry to hear. Bad times.

    • rhywun

      🙁

    • The Bearded Hobbit

      Sorry to hear.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

      Shit, that sucks.

    • DrOtto

I had a good friend who waited waaayyyyyy too long to get diagnosed (he was having poopy problems for probably almost a year before deciding that wasn’t normal and to get it checked out) and was diagnosed as stage IV in 2013 or 2014. Long and short of it, he lived approximately another 10 years and only passed in October of 2023. Never quit smoking, was diabetic and had a terrible diet on top of it all. Also, as an aside, he was on Obamacare when initially diagnosed and was told to get off O-care so they could give him better treatment options. Also, fuck cancer.

    • groat scotum

Listened to a podcast this week with Tom Segura (comedian, if you don’t know) who talked about his friend who’d been diagnosed with a late-stage cancer after his wife insisted on going to an emergency room because he was winded doing a light bit of walking. Turns out he was riddled with tumors. Segura and he chatted shortly after the diagnosis and his friend was essentially oblivious about it, talked about all the stuff he wanted to do after he was over it. Over cancer. Tuned it out, essentially. Seven years later he’s cancer free and living life like he had been, for better or worse.

    • Common Tater

      Sorry 🙁

Although being too optimistic is better thsn the alternative.

      • Mojeaux

When he went in this morning, I was kind of blasé about it. (Also, I’m taking care of my mom and suing the shit out of my aunt. My brain’s kinda full already.) I do reports for oncologists all the time. They are singularly unbothered by any left turn in treatment or response thereof, so all along, I just thought it sounded a lot worse than it really was and we’d all find out when they got into his belly. I guess we found out.

    • SarumanTheGreat

Sorry to hear that. Both my sister and my wife had colon cancer, but in both cases it was caught and cut out extremely early.

    • Sean

      Sorry about your brother.

  9. slumbrew

    Well, that escalated quickly.

    • groat scotum

No, they all escalate at the same speed. The speed is regulated, you see, it’s capped at 100 feet per minute.

      • slumbrew

They were on a 0.18 goals per second rate

Right, shitlord! Go ahead and pretend the male lion is some mighty hunter.

You know what the truth is

      • cavalier973

        😅

“Priorities, babe. You shouldn’t have stuck it out, if you didn’t want me to stick it in.”

  10. Ownbestenemy

We just hired two solid employees…

    damn

Interesting to see how they apply this. We need those two.

    • slumbrew

Shit. A good friend is 7 months into his 12 month probationary period with the IRS (collections). He really needs that job. Fingers crossed.

      • Ownbestenemy

Im still hanging my hat that this is more centered towards HQ in DC and regional offices

      • Suthenboy

I am sorry for your friend…personally sorry for every person losing their job but things have gone wildly off the rails and a correction is past overdue.
Also, your friend is probably the single most hated Fed employee in the country. There wont be a lot of tears for him.

    • Ownbestenemy

The move appears to have affected 70 employees there. Employees were asked to join a remote meeting where their cameras, mics and chat features were turned off, a now former employee told The Hill.

The employees were then sent a link to a presentation from OPM Acting Director Charles Ezell informing them they were fired, the employee said. They lost access to systems within 15 minutes of the 3 p.m. firing.

      Terror!

  11. groat scotum

I like me some weird British shows. Watching Peter Kay’s Car Share. Welsh actress Sian Gibson meets Peter Kay, a… Lancasterian? Bolton? Some West England variant? I don’t know, it’s all very confusing. He talks like a fag and his shit’s all retarded, in any event. They’re carpooling to their supermarket jobs, he’s in management and she hands out samples. Very Office-like so far. The dogging clip is probably the best bit anyway.

  12. Atreides

    Great work, as always, R.J.!
Love to hear about the National Videogame Museum. I’ve wanted to get there for a while, but not sure when I’ll make the trek. When I get to that part of the woods, I’ll be sure to look you up.

  13. Chipping Pioneer

    On the hockey stuff:

    1. This tournament is gimmicky bullshit. Just like the last one. I don’t care.

    2. I want best-on-best-on a regular schedule. As much as I don’t like gay football, at least FIFA gets it right in this respect.

    3. If there isn’t a team of the best Russian players, it doesn’t count.

    4. Canadians booing the American national anthem are idiots. If Canada didn’t exist right next to the USA, it would be fucking Uzbekistan or some similar shithole.

    • Common Tater

“If Canada didn’t exist right next to the USA, it would be fucking Uzbekistan or some similar shithole.”

Not that booing the Star Spangled isn’t retarded, I doubt that. Canada has a wealth of natural resources, and being right next to the USA hasn’t stopped Mexico from being a corrupt shitshow.

      • Chipping Pioneer

My point is that, given the vastness of Canada’s natural resources, the country should be much better off than it is. Canada has done a piss poor job of developing them, in general, and were it not for having a ready-made market next door that needs all of Canada’s resources, it would be a third-world shithole.

      • Common Tater

Well, yes, although that seems mostly the fault of the government.

    • Ownbestenemy

It’s marginally better than the all-star game which is just players jacking off into the center face off dot.

      • Chipping Pioneer

Agreed. Apparently, the all-star game was started as a charity event to raise money for injured players, before there was a players’ union and guaranteed contracts and such. No one gives a flying fadoo about the all-star game.

  14. cavalier973

Someone on one of the dead threads mentioned having just hired two people that are now going to be fired because they are in the probationary period.

    I saw this story:

    https://archive.is/JVQWe

One agency, the Small Business Administration, listed a paralegal phone number for laid off employees to appeal their terminations.
The number was an automated line for an apartment building.
“Thank you for calling Westbrook Place, a team that is dedicated to taking care of the way you live while offering you an extraordinary living experience,” a voice said after a reporter called the listed number. “We look forward to sharing why Westbrook Place is the perfect place to call home.”

    • Ownbestenemy

Looks up thread…is this a dedthread already?

      • slumbrew

        😁

      • cavalier973

        Ha!

I didn’t look as thoroughly as I thought.

      All I want from work

is that you put your redmarks in by three

I get them picked up by five

      And I’m home by seven,

      get to see my kids

      get to see my wife

then I’m back in the pool by eight the next morning

All I ever wanted was to see me wife

The architects (or engineers) make redmarks on your drawings to pick up. You make the changes, you resubmit your drawings. That’s the life of a draftsman. A drafter, if you’re being PC.

      • Mojeaux

I figgered that out. I’m still intrigued by your profession, but can’t do anything about training or certs or whatever at the moment because my life has gotten taken over.

      Good morning, Sean and Ted’S.!

      • Gender Traitor

Well, thanks! I think I have a fairly quiet work day in store, and, of course, a three-day weekend afterward!

        How about you?

      • UnCivilServant

Despite the positive mood I started yesterday with, the day did everything to kick that out of me by lunch time and kept on grinding. Today I arrived in the office to find hounding emails about a bunch of different things people want done.

This weekend will be interrupted by having to go out and see real humans in the wild as I’m supposed to shoot winter steel sunday, then meet former co-workers for lunch monday, and at both places collect character reference forms for my permit application. The weekend after is full up with the 18 hour pistol safety class, and the monday after that is my fingerprinting appointment.

I still can’t figure out why the LED driver isn’t driving LEDS. Oh, and TurboTax says I owe $300 even before I get my 1099s from Schwab for brokerage returns.

      • Gender Traitor

I’m sorry you had a bad day yesterday. 🙁 At least if you have to be around people this weekend, you’ll be shooting at one event and at the other, you’ll be with people who can probably empathize with your work woes. At both events you’ll be making progress toward getting your permit.

As for the taxes, at least you’ve had the use of that money – and will until April 15th if you choose to wait to file – and you haven’t been giving politicians an interest-free loan.

      • UnCivilServant

On the plus side, my brokerage account is finally in the green. After CD Projekt Red rook a tumble the day after I bought it, I’d been running a defecit until recently. It isn’t that CD Projekt Red has recovered, but the rest of the investments overtook the losses.
