No, this is not about Iran. I’m still making head and tails of that one. This is about asylum for Latin American migrants. Because what else do I routinely talk about?
This is my review of Goose Island Bourbon County Café de Olla Stout
As we all know, migrants from Mexico and Central America have been travelling every year through Mexico and claim asylum in the United States. DHS in the last few months found a loophole Trigger Warning: Buzzfeed:
The materials, drawn up last week for newly appointed acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf, suggest that department officials were trying to finalize key details regarding the implementation of a complicated proposal to send asylum-seekers arriving at the US border to Guatemala as part of a deal similar to a safe third country agreement.
The plan has been highlighted by the Trump administration as a key element in its strategy to deter migration at the border and another method to restrict asylum-seekers from entering the US.
“There is uncertainty as to who will provide orientation services for migrants as well as who will provide shelter, food, transportation, and other care,” read the DHS brief, drafted for Wolf in the run-up to a meeting Friday with Guatemala’s Interior Minister Enrique Degenhart. The implementation plan spelled out that Guatemala would provide the services but recently there had been “confusion” as to whether that would happen, according to the materials.
Should the asylum seeker be from Mexico, technically Guatemala is a neighboring country and they can just as easily claim asylum in Guatemala from whatever it is they are running away from in Mexico. SLD: This is bullshit. Borders are somewhat meaningless and people should be able to live and work wherever they can afford to live and work. In the interest of consistency I tend to base my opinion of the matter on said principle. After all, who among us hasn’t toyed with the idea of pulling a McAfee and retiring in Belize?
Another Disclaimer: One of the Caribbean islands might be a better idea after reading of McAfee’s experience with Belize. That’s another matter.
The sheer chutzpah of the move however, is what amuses me. They are in effect, forcing open border proponents to make the argument the migrants deserve to be here because of the poor economics. Generally speaking, asylum is a status granted to refugees that are seeking protection from persecution by their nation’s government or people. It is also generally claimed in a neighboring country. Guatemala happens to be located on Mexico’s southern border. So why not seek asylum from Mexico in Guatemala?
You know why. In the grand scheme of things, Mexico is not that bad.
No, seriously. Check out other places around the world and you might come to the same conclusion Mexico is not so bad, at least when compared to Guatemala.
There was an update earlier this week explaining the policy was put on hold. Evidently the Guatemalan government says the deal was for Hondurans and Salvadorans–not Mexicans. TW: More Buzzfeed. To be fair, this is a valid dispute if true. If these people are capable of producing and contributing to their adopting community, there’s no reason so send them back.
I get the “muh jobs” argument. I understand nobody is complaining they lost their job to a Mexican picking strawberries, landscaping, or detailing cars for cash. I get that teenagers can’t get entry level jobs in restaurants or retail because immigrants work harder and aren’t going to complain about an employer having the temerity to require them to work. If free trade of products and services results in the choice between this 100% American-Made washing machine or this one that does the same thing for over $400 less, a choice that ultimately results in a consumer that is $400 poorer having the same quality of life, why not labor? If an immigrant took your job, why are you here reading this instead of finding a way to make yourself more marketable? Isn’t that how markets work? If somebody is better than you, get better–or move to Mexico. Here is a opening for somebody that knows how to code.
This beer is awful. No, seriously its $25 worth of disappointment. I cracked it open, and it poured it’s customary style of the burnt turkey grease at the bottom of the fryer. It smelled pleasant: whiskey, charred oak, vanilla, orange peel, caramel. Then I took a sip and found it to be sickening sweet. Unless you are into the concept of “dessert beer” or are looking for some kind of stealth panty-dropper, it may be best to stick with the original. Goose Island Bourbon County Café de Olla Stout: 2.5/5
If it’s awful, why did you give it 2.5 instead of 0?
First, bitchez.
I was drunk. Very drunk.
On the awful beer you hated?
Very much so. You see I’ve had a flu for about a week or so, and I drank this with an anti-histamine to sleep the day day prior to a job interview.
I regret nothing.
Did the job interview go well?
Yes. Almost too well. I’ll let it play out before I make an announcement.
Excellent.
So you’re tookin’ r jerbs?
“I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! 1 star.”
This is every article in Guns & Ammo magazine, ever.
When I’m rating/reviewing beers, I’ll give something a higher score if it’s to the style it claims, and a lower score if it’s out of style. If I don’t care for the style, I may still give something a good rating even if I personally don’t enjoy it.
You fiend!
Yes, I definitely give points for style representation as well.
Unless I am judging a beer comp, I dont drink styles I dont enjoy. And then, of course I judge to style.
Look at the honest reviewer.
Yes. Somebody will like it.
It looks like a glass of used motor oil.
Observation: leftist comics mock Americans for wanting to enforce the border and in the same set, make fun of them for not having a passport. Why would you have a passport if borders don’t matter?
So you can easily prove citizenship to an employer. Otherwise. *shrugs*
It’s OK when other countries do it. Euro envy or traditional folkways, depending.
Maybe if the market were freer, there would be more demand for labor. The country has spent 100 years making labor as expensive as possible and then points the finger at Mexicans when nobody wants to hire a 15 year old at $15/hour + medical.
Yeah, it would be harder for the Messcans to terk er jerbs if the government wasn’t distorting the bejeezus out of the labor market.
Please forgive my early OT, mex. Just letting the other guys playing Diplomacy know that my orders have been issued. Sorry, got drunk last night and forgot.
Getting drunk make it on topic.
Damn hippies.
~”How to play 5 Dimensional Chess”~
1. Knock all the pieces off the board
2. Declare victory.
3. Drink.
Thats how I play every board game.
It doesn’t work unless you piss on the board and growl at anybody who tries to come near it.
I save that for Risk.
Monopoly, here. I lose every time I play.
Same. A short attention span makes those long games a challenge.
You only lose if you’re not the first player eliminated.
Monopoly is the most Glib of games.
Make sure and yell, “Uno!”
“I’ve got Wood for your sheep!”
Do you growl before or after you point out their greatest personal flaw?
Yahtzee!
I thought that was Pigeon chess?
Excellent, Senor Sharpshooter!
I wish I would have bought the Speed Queen set. Unfortunately my wife wanted the cool Electrolux. Not even sure they were cheaper than the SQ.
Your broader point is right on, though.
I just went and dumped some used oil. Looked a lot like that beer. Thanks for taking one for the team!
I have an LG..its old. Its one of the first energy star rated machines that I kept running because I knew how to secure a sensor from a newer machine to work in my old one with some 550 chords…
To each his own.
Old is good. I liked the Speed Queen for its lack of electronics and repairability.
The bearings on my fucking Bosch went. Simple fix, right? Wrong. They are a sealed part of the drum assembly. The part alone was as expensive as a new washer.
Oh well, it’s only money.
Yeah bearings, so simple yet needlessly complicated.
Its all ball bearings now days!
Yeah, that’s funny.
Anni-Frid or Agnetha?
If some goes that route, go for the TC series, not the TR in the post. Those are classic ones

It’s my understanding that many of the refugees would rather stay put but are trying to escape the drug cartel violence. We could maybe, I don’t know, end f’ng drug prohibition.
SHUT THE FUCK UP LIBTARD!
Crazy talk.
That couldn’t possibly help.
I bought 2 bottles of their “Brand Stout” (for $12 each) from that Bourbon County product line. I thought, it too, was way too sweet. Of course, I’ve thought that about all of the half dozen or so “imperial” style beers I’ve tried.
I have not had their non-bourbon variety. Be interesting side by side.
That’s a good idea. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for the “regular” version.
I don’t think old Rasputin is sweet at all. But I may be mistaken.
I don’t think it is sweet. I pick up a lot of roastiness from it.
Agreed
No, not at all.
I’ll give it a try.
After all, who among us hasn’t toyed with the idea of pulling a McAfee and retiring in Belize?
Another Disclaimer: One of the Caribbean islands might be a better idea after reading of McAfee’s experience with Belize. That’s another matter.
I was thinking St. Kitts thanks to their lack of income tax and their Citizenship by Investment program.
I’ve only had the bourbon barrel aged Bourbon County stouts. I think I will stick to them.
Turks for me.
My dad lived in Belize for a couple years. Nice, plenty of English spoken because of the RAF, but the place is silly with Crips. The local drug dealers have an understanding with them. They’re welcome to come and stay while they’re waiting for heat to die down back home as long as they don’t try to do any business. Try to sell so much as a joint and it’s curtains.
Belize navidad, prospero año y belizidad.
He had a rat problem, so he rented a caiman and put him on a tether in his kitchen for a few days, because apparently that’s what you do. The rats smell the caiman and avoid the place like the plague.
Sometimes these sanctuary deals don’t work out. Back in the 1930s, St. Paul, Minnesota had a deal with gangsters. If the crooks didn’t bother anybody in Ramsey County, the cops would leave them alone. The crooks blew the deal when the Barker-Karpis gang kidnapped William Hamm Jr., then president of Hamm’s brewery.
No Second Amendment – No Animal retirement plan.
I’ll stick with Alaska.
It’s good to have food to go with beer.

Nerdy, but excellent.
I recently picked up The Food Lab and Flour Salt Water Yeast to add to my kitchen geek books. Now to get some time to sit down and read them.
Love the Food Lab. Making his Chile Verde this afternoon, as a matter of fact!
#metoo and I’ve barely scratched the surface of it. Some day I’ll move beyond meat and potatoes.
I’ve never been super impressed with my results from Forkish’s book. Granted, I havent done many recipes from it.
Our Portland condo was down the street from Ken’s Bakery – yum.
I need to try some of his delayed gratification recipes. So far, I’ve scorched the bottoms of 5 loaves of overnight bread.
Are you using a Le Creuset (or similar)? “Bread” by Jeffrey Hamelman is a classic – good recipes, techniques, instructions.
Yep, enameled dutch oven. Last week, I moved it up as high as it’ll go in the oven and laid down parchment, and it still burned ever so slightly on the bottom and was doughy in the middle. Next step is to run the oven in convection mode and see if that helps.
Do you have an oven thermometer? The oven temperature in the gas range in our new condominium is up to 50 F lower than the setting. Maybe yours is too high.

Wut?
MIT and Epstein
Three leaders at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s renowned Media Lab learned of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s status as a convicted sex offender but continued to approve his donations for several years, according to a report that found “significant errors in judgment.”
Additionally, Epstein visited the campus nine times after he registered as a sex offender.
Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges, drawing new attention to old allegations that he had sexually abused women and girls. He killed himself in jail in August while awaiting trial.
MIT President L. Rafael Reif announced in September that the law firm Goodwin Procter would conduct an investigation into the institute’s connections to Epstein after The New Yorker reported allegations that leaders of the Media Lab tried to conceal the extent of the relationship.
Disgrace don’t mean his money ain’t green
Oh no, someone did bad things therefore all things associated with them are for all time attainted and unclean. This is the very definition of morality.
Random question sparked by a more careful re-read of UCS’s series:
How would one go about securing fake documents?
(Dear NSA: I’m a writer. I am obliged to ask these questions.)
Find someone who died as a child and would be around your age today and get a couple of their birth certificate. Or hang out at the Mexican bar.
You now need a valid, government-issued photo ID to get a copy of your birth certificate. And you need your birth certificate to get you new “real ID”
drivers license or a passport.
Go to the DMV, talk with a hispanic accent, give fake name, get a driver’s license?
In a blue state.
The drones at the DMV tick boxes. Just forge the documents. They aren’t going to be looking for watermarks or figuring out if the the electric company bill you presented is legitimate.
One group is worried robots will take our jobs, another afraid all the people from the messican countries will. Both groups keep adding more rules to make it harder to get a job. Something something pattern…
Welcome to Europe.
Mexicans pretty much control the construction market labor pool at this point. The white kids just want to design mobile apps and instagram.
Want to build stuff? You’re going to need a Mexican.
Do you still need Italians for concrete work?
I believe the correct response is “only if dago ‘wop wop wop'”
They’re the very old men of concrete and rapidly being replaced.
True dat. Even the millenials I know who are in construction or the trades are either managers or skilled tradesmen. There are a couple of young local guys working as helpers but almost all the labor (and a good bit of the skilled trade stuff) comes from Spanish speaking immigrants.
@UCS, I hope you see this, but if not, I will post on every thread until you do.
Finished “Ink and Infatuation” with a re-read of parts 1 and 2. The misunderstanding was all my fault. I was reading while distracted and was not paying attention. I haven’t been able to read for pleasure for years, which I didn’t want to say because after saying it so many times, it sounds like “I’m not interested,” which is not true. I just can’t get past the stress in my head enough to pay attention and enjoy anything.
So I was careful and I really liked it. The end was tidy and made sense, all threads tied up. You did a lot of character development in few words, which ability I admire.
Thank you for sharing. I bought your books, but I can’t promise I’ll read anything else of yours soon (save whatever you post here and I promise I’ll pay attention), but don’t take it personally because of aforementioned stress.
Very well done. Thank you.
I’m not an open borders guy, so my take on this is that it’s a perfectly valid counter to the argument that there is some obligation on the part of the US to admit Mexican immigrants as emergency asylum seekers on the basis of economic asylum, which is a misnomer. That said, the fix for this is to make legal immigration easier and more efficient. If someone wants to come work here for however long it should be no more complicated than renting a car or getting a hotel room.
Social services and welfare abuse is another issue. But that’s an issue beyond immigration that must happens to be exacerbated by it.
*just. Phone typing is the devil.
I have never been to Guatemala but have friends who worked there. Sketchy place. Friend saw some poor bastard get shot in the head in Rio Dulce for touching some dudes truck while crossing the street. He said everyone carried on like nothing happened. Ya, no thanks.
Borders are somewhat meaningless and people should be able to live and work wherever they can afford to live and work. In the interest of consistency I tend to base my opinion of the matter on said principle. I concur. That is not the position I held some years ago due to unfair visa practices by most countries south of the border. Now I don’t give a fuck.
I’m not going there. Now Costa Rica I can be talked into going to, maybe Panama.

Fuck you, Avast. There’s a reason I quit you over a decade ago and now you’ve fucked up a good utility.
I never update anything till forced, so I’m not sure they’re pushing updates, but my Antispyware keeps telling me startup items are randomly added. Could be CrapCleaner, I don’t know. I haven’t been able to track it down. If I had known Avast bought CrapCleaner, I would’ve dumped it immediately.
Shit.

Eh, for collectors it’s like getting one of the original Colt Pythons.
Yep. Take a look at these SAA Colts that sold at Rock Island Auction.
This beer is awful.
I never would have guessed.
ps- Cali beer drinkers, is Red Tail Ale still around?
Nope.
I never would have guessed.
Swiss warned me. I disregarded his warning.
Maybe you can shovel at Lambeau next year kid.

Maybe they can shovel at Minnesota’s stadium.
I feel like baking today. I asked Mr. Mojeaux if he wanted connamon rolls, cream cheese danish, or funnel cake bites.
“Yes.”
Well, get started! :-p
I did ATK pancakes this morning and put chocolate chips into one batch. Yummm.
Well, it won’t show me the recipe (could be my iPad).
But pancakes are a nonstarter around here. I know how to make scratch pancakes (I think I may have used one whole small box of Bisquick in my life), but they’re not anybody’s favorite. The funnel cake isn’t any less “desserty” than pancakes (really, it’s got “cake” right in the name), I don’t really care for pancakes, and funnel cake is easier *for me*. The kids and I like French toast better.
These pancakes are light on the sugar and heavy on the baking powder/soda. I like them because they’re not particularly oversweet.
IIRC, the recipe is as follows:
10oz AP flour
3 Tbsp sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
1.5 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Wait, what? They don’t require buttermilk or soured milk?
They have a buttermilk pancake recipe, but the sour flavor comes from the baking soda in this one.
My moms best pancakes are made with cottage cheese. Amazingly light and taste divine with maple syrup.
Oh, that sounds different.
I am now questioning whether one could use liquid sour cream for the buttermilk since, well, buttermilk tastes like liquid sour cream.
Yep, I’ve seen substitutions doing exactly that. IIRC, some milk was included, too.
My method has always been vinegar in milk. I never actually thought about sour cream until this discussion.
I’ve made pancakes with sour cream. They are heavy.
Oh, that’s unfortunate.
Well. I’ll just stick with funnel cake.
I was going to do a New York roast today but some random drunk asshole forgot to season and air it last night so it has been scheduled for cooking tomorrow.
Want to build stuff? You’re going to need a Mexican.
Something something skills gap.
I mourn my loss of enjoyment in building. ?
Alright, replaced the bent bolt catch, took the PCC to the range and ran a sight confirmation/reliability check. Top target is 10 shot seated showing the sights are on, bottom target 140 shots showing I shoot low and to the left. All shots on an AP-2 at 25 yards.

No stoppages when using Glock factory mags, neither of the Pmags were able to feed rounds reliably when loaded with more than 5 rounds. The follower would stick. I’m going to see if there’s something online about how to fix that.
While this seems to be shooting well enough for Steel Challenge/USPSA, the NY hack of running the bolt release with one’s index finger while pulling the trigger with the emotive finger seems like it could cause some RSIs if I were to start shooting seriously that way.
I’m not an open borders guy, so my take on this is that it’s a perfectly valid counter to the argument that there is some obligation on the part of the US to admit Mexican immigrants as emergency asylum seekers on the basis of economic asylum, which is a misnomer. Guest workers, FTW!
Totes. You still run into compliance issues, but at least you know who’s entered the country.
Seems like a good idea.
Sure, but Democrats already said no to that idea. They’re not giving up their cheap under-the-table nannies and gardeners in exchange for nothing, man. They want voters, not legal workers.
neither of the Pmags were able to feed rounds reliably when loaded with more than 5 rounds. The follower would stick. I’m going to see if there’s something online about how to fix that.
If I interpret that correctly…
Is the follower a sloppy fit, and getting misaligned and hanging up? Put some tape on it as a test.
It’s definitely hanging up. What do you mean by using tape as a test?
One odd thing: The Glock mags use the full length of the magazine for the 10 rounds. The Pmags are basically a compact magazine with a base plate extender so they would fit in a G17. The springs are much stiffer in the Pmags. In spite of that, when empty, the follower is not as high up in them as in the factory.
pretty much exactly this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRF8886twiA
Will it work if you switch out the followers? I’m genuinely curious because my AR PMags are pretty much flawless.
All of the comments say it’s an issue with using steel cased ammo. Which I was.
Got it.
Drinking Firestone Walker 23rd Anniversary edition. Not as sweet as the Goose Island but still a big Imperial Stout.
Firestone Walker’s Anniversary beers are good.
I really wish Firestone Walker was distributed here in Ohio. I was hopeful with their acquisition by Duvel it would be happening (we got Boulevard shortly after they were acquired), but nothing yet. We have started getting Surly recently at least.
What do you mean by using tape as a test?
I stick them in the vise, but if you have better manual dexterity than I this might not be necessary. Push the follower down tp compress the spring, then stick something through one of the (hopefully) convenient holes in the body of the mag (I base all this on my 1911 and Sig mags). A drill bit works quite well.
With the spring pressure off the follower, wiggle it around and see where you think it might need to be shimmed to hold it in alignment, and then put some tape on it to help keep it aligned. With the spring pressure off it, you should be able to remove it from the top (or remove the base plate, on some mags.)
Masking tape works for testing purposes. Once you determine what it needs, you can epoxy a little bit of shim stock (beer can) to it, or just use JB Weld.
Hope that works for you.
I don’t know anyone – literally, anyone – who is against legal immigration. I’m sure there are some racists somewhere, and they’re not in my orbit, but I acknowledge there are people who don’t want “darkies” and “Mooslims” invading simply because (((those people))) are darkie qua darkie. But for most of the rest of the country, which I’ve driven top to bottom and side to side more than a dozen times, most people have a pretty lax attitude about legal immigration, being as how most Americans are immigrants of only a few generations here, most likely, just based upon the age of the country and our immigration history.
Given that, I really struggle to see how this whole thing isn’t open borders folks arguing with the Raaaacisssstsss in their head. (And I’m not saying anyone here is doing that, btw. There are other principled reasons for being completely open borders, but that’s not me). I think we need more Mexicans, tbh. In 2-3 generations, tops, in most cases, they’ll likely be voting more like other homeowners than as a monolithic inner city hispanic bloc as Team Blue seems to think.
I know that legal immigration can be handled WAY more effectively and efficiently that it has. At the borders of both Macau and Hong Kong, the Chinese peacefully process a massive number of people (I can’t find good numbers, but I’ve made both and it is truly a HUGE number of people) at two international borders. With nothing like the angst we seem to have at our borders.
Oh, and yes, end the drug war and it will exponentially help the immigration problems, but Congress is too fucking stupid to do that. So there is that issue.
Tangentially, I encourage my kids to learn Spanish as a matter of practicality.
My beef is with the social services illegal immigrants have access to that–even if I wanted to use them–I don’t.
“Oh, and yes, end the drug war and it will exponentially help the immigration problems, but Congress is too fucking stupid to do that.”
Look at how many people you’d put out of work. And remember that most of the federal and state employees are in some sort of union or other.
Surely you’re not suggesting union members vote in their own interest. I’ve long been told everything the do is in the public interest.
It the same reason you’ll never see the income tax code replaced with something like a national sales tax or consumption tax.
Im sure all those IRS accountants would be thrilled to hear that candidate (x) is on a platform of putting them all out of work.
Very true Ozy. The Teams could never reach a deal to straighten out this mess because they caved to their extreme wings. Scratch your average voter, left or right, and there is plenty of overlap. Things could be far better than they are now.
A big part of that problem, however, is that the dialogue is just awful. I mean, like “two 7 year-olds in the backseat calling each other poopyheads at the top of their lungs” kind of bad. Democrats scream racist to anything, I mean anything, that isn’t full and complete capitulation to what they want. There is no dialogue with someone when that is their starting point for “negotiation.” You don’t agree, you’re a fucking racist.
In legal negotiations, which is what this is, a mediator/arbitrator/judge would call that “bad faith” from the instant it happened. But somehow, that is completely glossed over, and indeed, “racist!!!” is simply breathlessly repeated by the DNC Media.
So, if I’m really putting the blame somewhere, Imma hafta put this fucking mess firmly in Team Blue’s lap. ESPECIALLY when one sees what their stance was just a few years ago on the exact same subject (i.e. walls/borders from Hillary right on down), as well as their own record on deportations under Obama.
I completely agree. I’ll only add Team Red hasn’t exactly covered themselves in glory.
Of course not. Team Stupid can’t help but fuck things up, even when they have the White House and Congress, but it really is hard to get something done where the other side does nothing but call you a racist simply for existing.
Agreed.
Too many issues all rolled into one.
They’re all related, Mexi, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start making incremental progress by turning the knobs that you know work. The drug war, unfortunately, is a HUGE one, though, and it is directly related to both the problems at our borders and how we handle our borders. When you treat everybody coming in as a possible terrorist or narco-trafficker, you’ve changed the entire nature of the crossings at the border. It’s a complete shit-show.
But knowing these things I’m going to continue to advocate for fixing them – i.e. ending the War on Drugs – because we know it will only help in the long run. I can’t just throw my hands up and say, “Oh well, too hard to fix, so just leave that festering, pustulent abscess to sort itself out.”
Absolutely. They could find solutions to single, focused issues. Unfortunately they seem to prefer to have “comprehensive” reform with meaningless measures wrapped up in a 1000 page bill that happens to dole out money to whatever cause they really wanted to fund.
I don’t know anyone – literally, anyone – who is against legal immigration.
I’m on record and probably count this far: I have nothing against anyone in the US no matter how they got here, but I do think the idea American population is around 200M, so I wouldn’t mind if roughly half the folk here just went away. I’m perfectly okay with the productivity, goods, and services we have, and I’d like about half the folks out on I-40 to evaporate. Once we got back down to my 200M, I’d be okay with open borders so long as we held it at 200: one in, one out, nice knowing you.
Looking at some pictures, i guess the glock mags have a removable base plate for disassembly. I’d pull the spring out and just rattle the follower back and forth to what it does.
Yes. The comments I’m finding on reddit and youtube seem to indicate it’s an issue with the friction of steel cased ammo and might be rectified by lubing the inside of the mag.
Pretty much all mags can be taken apart for cleaning.
The comments I’m finding on reddit and youtube seem to indicate it’s an issue with the friction of steel cased ammo and might be rectified by lubing the inside of the mag.
I watched that one you linked, and what he showed at the very beginning looked like the rounds were getting wedged against each other in the body of the mag. And he said lube cured it.
Maybe a dry lube, like graphite or moly would work.
Can you get it in a 55 gallon drum?
And- no more Red Tail Ale
Bummer. That was good stuff. I’d grab some whenever I could find it.
I drank a lot of Red Tail Ale in my day.
I drank a lot of red tail myself, if you know what I mean.
Damn, Mexi. That is one sweet beer. You should try the Bourbon County Wheatwine. It’s just as sweet but intriguing.

Bitter fucking cold out there. We blew the impeller belt on the snowblower somehow so I took the thing apart and Wifey is off to buy a new one. Funny that after awhile you don’t notice the cold but your hands and feet sure do. We’ve been lucky here, the temp hasn’t dipped below -30 for a few years. Apparently that changes this week.
-30? No effing way I would put up with that. Single digits annoy me.
The temp is dropping as I type. Last time it got this cold I was working for my Dad. The snow machine calved and we ended up walking out of the bush. Ten miles on a snowmobile trail wherein every third step was a sinker. We made it back and later needed a chopper to rescue the machine. I rigged it and was very proud of myself.
It’s 67 in New York.

I suggest booze and Niners to assuage your anger.

Ooh, my neck of the woods!
Note that possession of firearms is prohibited for non-cops.
Looking down their big list of nanny rules, it appears that unauthorized entry is unauthorized.
I wonder how many found firearms never get turned in and never make the news.
I wouldn’t keep a cop gun I found. It would be too likely to be tied to a body.
Why today’s young men are terrified of sex
What to do!
Legalizing marijuana may lead people to have more sex, says study — but there’s a downside
Solution! Wait, the downside?
Conclusion: men don’t have sex and can’t use cannabis to help ease their minds because WOMEN are irresponsible.
My God.
The draconian attitudes allowing sex to be declared rape retroactively obviously has nothing to do with it….
“Have”, not “has”.
It shouldn’t.
Wouldn’t have anything to do with being told they’re toxic, dangerous, rapetastic monsters for the last 10 years, would it?
Or actively trying to make themselves unattractive in a variety of ways?
I make sure that it’s not me who’s terrified.
(((My sister))) announced to me in front of her boyfriend that they “don’t have a sexual relationship”. He seemed pretty embarrassed. I told her I don’t need to know that kind of thing. They’re still together over a year later, and she’s still the same passive aggressive, toxic person she ever was. Never had a real job and lives in some world of toxic online drama with “friends” and complete strangers apparently being a cunt to similarly pathological lowlives that encounter each other in the dank, miserable recesses of social media, telling other people what they think if they don’t agree with whatever cynical dogma koolaid she drinks. I can’t say much to her without her snarking at me with something like “that sounds more like insecurity than a joke”, or some weird non-sequitur. And while I’m ranting (yet again) about (((my sister))), it’s difficult to talk to her because she seems to assume everything is somehow about whatever horrible zeitgeist she’s enthralled in on the aforementioned septic tank of pathological social media. Something about not being able to choose your family. She’s a singularity of callous misery, plugged into a toxic world of ignorance and resentment, yet she’s my sister, so after all this time I still believe that maybe she can grow to become a happy, intelligent, useful person in the real world, instead of a borderline personality disorder teenager in her late twenties who has never had a real job.
I’m sorry I got way off into the weeds on that one, but I’m just typing it all out therapeutically.
JD, sorry to hear about the family issues.
Hope that having people to talk to does help (it’s helped me several times).

I’m going to bake. I’m not in the mood now, but since my husband ventured out in the snow to get yeast, I have to.
One advantage of brewing, I’ve got all sorts of yeast sitting around in the house.

Well that is an extremely specific fetish, but whatever gets your blood pumping.
Its not a fetish if its utilitarian. I think.

2.5 rating is pretty bad for a $10 bottle of beer. I had one over the holiday and I would have given it at least a 3.
Meh. I give harder ratings the more expensive the beer is. You want me to drop $15+ on a bottle it better be damned good.

I will put forth a philosophical question.
For whatever reason, in the 80s, my dad went on a rant about the immorality of using the Nazis’ medical research to further modern medicine. I guess there was some question about opening up some newly found records? I don’t know.
As I have amply shown, I’m a little hard-hearted about some things and I, in my teenage logic, thought that at least SOME good could come of the atrocity and those people would not have died in vain.
He got pissed off at my opinion (he expected me to agree with him without my knowing what his opinion was) and ranted that it was immoral and the records should stay sealed. Well. I tried to argue my position, but I was doubting myself by then and I DID see his point.
I still haven’t made up my mind, because now I equate it to performing experiments on aborted fetuses and I largely believe that abortion is at best a violation of NAP and at worst, murder.
So I put it to you, dear Gliberati: Using Nazi research to further modern medicine—immoral or no?
Or, you know, could be a future debate topic.
Encouraging such research, performing it, or even pardoning the perpetrators to obtain it is IMHO immoral. Using data regardless of the source is not. The dead and wounded from the research or the abortion are already gone, the dying or injured that the data can help heal are not. When someone else pays the entire price of your moral position I’d say it may be a sign that your stance is not principle but rather virtue signalling.
Damn you and your nimble fingers.
That is what she said?
Well, that’s what I thought. How is keeping that sealed helping dead people?
See also- Chinese prisoners
I can’t see why using data can be immoral. A totally different thing than using immoral means to gather that data.
It’s an interesting argument, do you try to make something good out of evil, or is everything from evil tainted? I tend towards the using the research and try to get some good out of the evil.
Absolutely not immoral.
The data exists, use it.
To put it in balance, why should people of the future suffer to atone for the sins of someone else in the past?
I’ve been conflicted about this and have spent many hours wrestling with it myself.
I tend to come down roughly along the lines of Jarflax, OMWC, and Nephilium lay out.
I think there are a couple of arguments that can be made against the use. I may even suspect one of them could have legs.
The first is just the extreme version of ‘slippery slope.’
The more interesting is the potential harm to the researchers of exposure to what was done. We can’t just decide not to feel horror or revulsion. We experience the world up close and personal, all the time. I don’t easily believe that a researcher could remain unaffected.
And at that point we are up against “who gets to decide whose moral risks?” For me, a lot of this comes down to “who gets to say no?” and I don’t think I’m one of them.
By all means feel the revulsion. In fact fuck you you are a potential Mengele if you don’t. But if the research helps you solve a significant problem solve it.
Democracy is dooooooomed
Yes, interacting within Facebook groups is not the same as running ads on Facebook that aren’t entirely accurate (or accurate at all). But when you, as Facebook, know that your technology was used — at massive scale — to spread misinformation with the hopes of a foreign power influencing the American presidential election, wouldn’t you want to bend over backward to try to avoid purposeful misuse of the platform again?
The answer to that question is, obviously, yes. But not for Facebook. And for anyone who has read Andrew Marantz’s absolute terrific and terrifying new book “Antisocial: Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation,” that shouldn’t be all that surprising. As Marantz documents, the founders of these social media behemoths have long viewed their platforms as the ultimate in free speech — resisting curtailing any sort of speech, no matter how hateful (for example, white supremacists have flourished on social media) or false.
Facebook’s decision — or, really, lack of a decision — about its willingness to police lying in its ads ensures that falsehoods will spread on its platform. And not just falsehoods, but misinformation and lies produced by people who know that they can take advantage of unknowing people because Facebook’s decision. The end result of Facebook’s view on lying in ads is that the voting public will be less well informed about its choices this November. Period.
And I assume that means anybody who questions the accuracy of Elizabeth Warren’s numbers will be one of those “liars”.
Obviously.
Vikings are losssing, Vikings are losssing…

A Vermont state senator has proposed a total ban on cellphones for anyone under 21 years old.
Democratic Sen. John Rodgers proposed a bill that would effectively ban cellphone use and possession for residents under 21 because, he told CNN, “cellphones are just as dangerous as guns.”
He knows it won’t make it past the judiciary committee.
“I’m not going to push for the bill to pass,” he said. “I wouldn’t vote for the thing. This is just to make a point.”
That point: In Vermont, it’s illegal for anyone under 21 to buy a firearm. Rodgers suggested that the same age restrictions should apply to cellphone use.
“It is clear that persons under 21 years of age are not developmentally mature enough to safely possess them,” the bill reads.
We don’t want to control every single aspect of your life.
We just want to help you make better decisions.
I want to post an erudite response, but my brain just keeps saying “Christ, what an asshole.”
“I’m not going to push for the bill to pass,” he said. “I wouldn’t vote for the thing. This is just to make a point.”
Then Senator….what is the point?
“People in rural areas are largely independent, and we take it upon ourselves to stay safe,” he said. “Without the Second Amendment, we couldn’t do that.”
So you are making a facetiously obscure point?
“The Internet and social media, accessed primarily through cellphones, are used to radicalize and recruit terrorists, fascists, and other extremists,”
I am so confused….what an asshole
“largely independent”
… cell phones had nothing to do with that, nope. Not in the least little bit.
Unlike TV, news media, and politicians….it is the the evil cell phones that are radicalizing the yooots
*sage nod*
These people wonder why we sit our boys down on a weekly basis and explain that Top Men are just bottom feeders hopinging to gain a little bit of power over your life for the smoke and mirrors of safety.
He’s trolling, saying banning guns is as stupid as banning cell phones.
One would hope…but if he is trolling why not put out a bill reaffirming the State and Federal recognition of 2nd Amendment rights
This, it’s a troll
That was my take. At least I hope it is a troll.
He says it outright (doesn’t use the word “troll”). The problem is, he’s not really trolling. It’s a trial balloon.
it won’t make it past the judiciary committee.
Why not?
Im guessing roooshans or drumph.
