The first year I was out there for Viva (in April, will be there again this year) it had snowed the week before we flew out, and Vegas was “chilly” in the mid-60’s. I dunno. The face looks like it was done using one of those apps. I’m only looking at it on my phone which doesn’t have the best screen.
“The sky above Idaho was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
Pretty much.
Which I totally get but isn’t that just a black screen with channel number superimposed in today’s world of DTV? That is a beautiful phrase, but one whose actual meaning is quickly being lost, much like “dial a phone,” and “wind a watch.”
“do not attempt to adjust your set, We control the Horizontal, and the vertical”
Don’t they still make wind-up wristwatches?
Yes, indeed. And when I wrote that I thought they were all like multi-hundred dollar things. Amazon has one for $25.

One of these things is not like the other.
It really seems to wound the amour-propre of Boomers to observe that you can get a better cappuccino in Rome than in Davenport. Much less mention the fact that many other countries have much more sensible taxation laws than the United States, and better educational systems, and more sophisticated infrastructure, and that a return to the geopolitical multipolarity of the 80’s and earlier is not only not a sign of the Apocalypse, but natural and inevitable.
SHUT THE FUCK UP LIBTARD!
I’d like a little more specificity on which “other” countries.
A magical fantasy version of [insert Scandinavian country] which is a paragon of socially engineered multicultural bliss, with a mandatory minimum wage equivalent to $40 p/h, and a two-day working week. Jews are only allowed into this progtopia if they publically denounce Israel and declare Hamas to be stunning and brave, and white cis-males must pay a 50% tax rate on their income to fund reparations to a multitude of agrieved categories above them on the totem pole. Religion is banned (except for Islam), and every December is Trans History Month; a national holiday in which the state-controlled media curates special programming about the before times in the bad country where Fuhrer Trump and his vice-chancellor General Abraham E. Hitler stole trans slaves from Tranfrica and forced them to work on his Big Mac plantations, or something.
Bravo!
Those countries also have immigration laws and enforce them, at least in the case of people from developed countries.
I know because I lived in one and worked in five for fourteen years.
Good luck to anyone from the USA who thinks it’s easy wander in and stay in any of them.
Examples, please.
Germany is my favorite but probably going downhill because of Merkel’s Millions of Migrants. It has a sound education system–the tradespeople are well trained. Higher education has fewer high spots than the USA but far fewer of the lows. Good local and intercity rail transport, but the rate of car ownership is high also. Roads and bridges are in good shape, although autobahn traffic often gets jammed. But at least when you’re stuck on a freeway, you never have to look at busted pavement, trash and cast off tire treads. They have no Second Amendment, but people who want guns can have them and can hunt or target shoot. There are lots of rules. most of which boil down to “don’t be an asshole”. Their medical system is probably second only to Singapore in delivering quality, cost efficient service. Taxes are high but the middle class gets something back for them other than military hardware and endless foreign wars. Some years back they tightened up their welfare system, but you don’t see hobo jungles full of homeless in the cities and guaranteed nobody gets by with shitting in the streets. Housing and infrastructure are well maintained. Even in the poorest areas you don’t see the squalor you do here.
There is no First Amendment there, but they have privacy laws and enforce them. The police are much better trained and controlled than here.
I apologize for the rambling. Hope I made some sense. I might write some coherent observations if I ever get a block of time.
I’ve lived in Germany and can’t disagree with any of that.
-2 amendments is still a giant gaping minus, though.
I’m scraping the bottom of the cup for some substance….

Oh the huuumaanityyyy!
Recently my buddy and his wife were over at my place the first time since I moved. She vapes, and went right for it indoors without asking me if that was ok. It’s fine by me but is it weird that she didn’t ask? Easier to ask for forgiveness, etc. That was a first for me.
I’ve been on the other side of that scene but in my defense it was more than 25 years ago and both of them smoked but I didn’t know they had decided not to smoke in their new house. I learned my lesson.
Environment Canada’s issuing extreme cold warnings for Edmonton (and indeed, most of Alberta). The Weather Network, which never seems to be able to police its own hyperbole, claims that Alberta will be one of the coldest places on Earth next week. I kinda doubt that, but it’s still gonna suck. I take some comfort knowing that my asshole brother in Vancouver is looking at sub-zero temperatures and snow for much of next week as well, so he’ll have little reason to mock us, especially since Vancouverites and other Lower Mainlanders have no idea how to actually deal with snow and cold, other than bitch incessantly.
Made the right call moving back here — if I have to experience winter no matter where I live, I’d rather experience it someplace where living’s cheaper, the quality of life is better and where the locals actually know how to deal with the conditions. Plus the house we’re in’s actually designed to stay warm in the winter, so paradoxically we’re more comfy than back in Pitt Meadows even though it’s much colder outside.
Now if only we could get more sunshine . . .
Plus the biggest mall in the world!

You know how, when something touches you just right, you get nice chills and tingles? Many people get that with sounds or music or whatever.
See Zoe Kravitz’s Superbowl commercial.
Hey that’s pretty good. I dunno about getting tingles but I do like the crispness of it all. Perfectly sells a cold beer. I’d get the tingles if she was whispering sweet nothings in my ear instead of sitting in front of a green screen reading a script for a beer commercial.
A lot of people get that from Bob Ross episodes. In fact, there’s a theory that says that’s why he was popular.
It was a happy accident.

It’s also awesome for making fresh pasta.

And I was flirting with making puff pastry.
Nope. Nopey McNoperson.
When Alton Brown says to just buy it instead of trying to make it from scratch, I’ll listen to him. If you watch any of the cooking shows, notice that no one ever makes puff pastry in them, they always pull it out of the fridge (or freezer).
I caved with pie crust because I make so many pumpkin pies in the fall and winter. There is no way I’m making six pie crusts a week.
I have the same reaction when I see “grind your own hamburger”, for example in The Food Lab.
Well that’s great but unless you’re growing wheat and raising cattle in your backyard etc., you’re already taking a lot of shortcuts.
I tweak my crusts to go with the pies (adding some more flavor to the pie as a whole as well), but I don’t make a large amount of pies. I hate wasting food, and making more baked goods that I need to eat would not help me in the weight loss goals.
No, I mean I buy the ones already in the tins.
My kids don’t know from heavenly homemade pie crust, so they don’t care.

@Shirley Knott, re Nazi medical research, thanks for those extra considerations. I hadn’t thought about the personal impact it might have. A medical researcher could have a conscientious objection to using it.
You’re more than welcome. Thank you for raising the topic.
I want ethics to ultimately be grounded in personal agency. That is, I think, an unexpected and perhaps fruitful way to look at things like this.
But I also think that the question of “who gets to say no” goes a long way towards scoping the issues in terms that matter to libertarians.
It would be wrong to require or force anyone to use the materials, or results from use of the materials.* Beyond that, I don’t see that I have a stake.
_
*I’d like to point to results gathered from such ‘questionable activities’ as the various US government involuntary experiments. But one of the strong, albeit I think secondary, arguments against these programs is that they generally did not generate much by way of new, useful, or fructifying insights. So we should also consider that there may be little or nothing there of research value.
@UCS, I hope you see this, but if not, I will post on every thread until you do.
Finished “Ink and Infatuation” with a re-read of parts 1 and 2. The misunderstanding was all my fault. I was reading while distracted and was not paying attention. I haven’t been able to read for pleasure for years, which I didn’t want to say because after saying it so many times, it sounds like “I’m not interested,” which is not true. I just can’t get past the stress in my head enough to pay attention and enjoy anything.
So I was careful and I really liked it. The end was tidy and made sense, all threads tied up. You did a lot of character development in few words, which ability I admire.
Thank you for sharing. I bought your books, but I can’t promise I’ll read anything else of yours soon (save whatever you post here and I promise I’ll pay attention), but don’t take it personally because of aforementioned stress.
Very well done. Thank you.
I don’t take anything personally. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to take feedback.
If you do find the time to read for fun, well, that’s all my stories are for.
My cat caught a mouse, promptly brought it to me. Yuck.
Good kitty!
What a sweetheart! Did you pet him/her and tell it what a good kitty it is before sneaking the body outside?
There are good cats in the same way there are good communists.
? Lots of cat people here. Me, I hate dogs. And the only good horse has two wheels and chrome.

I didn’t seek the little fucker out.
Whereas, every horse on two wheels I have ever ridden has been kind and loving and did exactly what I wanted it to.
Mares are bitches.
You only like cats because you hate everything and so do cats.
You have never been more correct in your life, I guarantee it.
And owls are cats with wings.
I don’t hate dogs so much as not like them. Like, I’ll enjoy friends’ dogs for short stretches at a time but I would never want to own one.
I like both, but I like that if something happens that I’d need to go away for a weekend, it’s much easier to care for a cat than a dog.
Yeah, I’ll cop to that, too. I will pet them for a couple of mi utes, say “What a good puppy,” and then stop.
Kinda like babies.
I love cats, but I don’t want one in my home. *shrug*
I thought, when I had to put down my hand-raised mean-as-sin devil cat that I would not get another. But I could not deal without a kitty soul somewhere in the house. Then, when one of the two we got died some many years later leaving the old girl, and then the old girl was released from this mortal coil, that I didn’t want any more. But I could not deal without a kitty soul in the house.
So, we are on our second pair. Lifetime cat count for me: 9.
I think I’m done after my current pair.
Was the head still attached?
Yes, he was still playing with it.
I told him what a wonderful boy he is and gave him a special treat.

Mine wants to play fetch in the middle of the night and gets a little impatient if you don’t play, as in, he will jump on you till you wake up. I took his toy away and hid it under my pillow and he hissed at me. The other day I threw his toy but he couldn’t find it. So he came back to me and tried to get me to get it for him, but I was busy and ignored him. He bit me, the little fucker. Drew blood, too.

For the individual, the difference between living in first world country A and first world country B (given at least a middle class income) isn’t nearly as dramatic as it used to be. I like the fact that you seem to be a fan of his yet keep insulting him. I mean, he is obnoxious and over rated, but I had never thought of him as particularly cowardly.
Tee hee. Didn’t mean to demean Bill Cowher.
I was remarking on the smooth transition from Cowher to Tomlin and how very unusual it is for a planned passing of the torch in the NFL to succeed.
He was good on House.
Nice solid win for the Niners, they made me a couple hundred today. I actually thought the Vikes would make it a pretty close one and bought a half point I didn’t need. Hmm, Packers or Seahawks? I’m kinda hoping for the Packers as I think they will be a bit easier to beat. Looking forward to a Niners/Ravens or Niners/Chiefs Super Bowl.
Good luck next week. Didn’t expect much from muh Vikes this week. Was bummed for about 5 minutes.
Thanks. Next week will be tougher. The Niners came damn close to getting Cousins. Although I wouldn’t lay this loss on his back, the Niners defense destroyed their run game.

Derrick Henry isn’t exactly a pushover…
My faith does not run as deep as yours.
I’ve always hated when after a possible fumble or on a fourth down play, players from both teams will start pointing as though they’ve got possession of the ball before the refs make the announcement.
#metoo I’m fine with still fighting for it at the bottom of the pile, ’cause you’re supposed to be competing. But I despise the fingerpointing as showboating BS.
I’m reminded of the pantomime “yellow card” that certain soccer players will throw.
That and WRs pantomiming the penalty flag for interference on incomplete passes.
Should be a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
And next the refs will call traveling again in basketball games.

You run a tight kitchen. Thank you.
It is a galley kitchen. It is very tight, which is the way I like it.
Hey ohhh!
If you ever make it out to Ohio, I recommend Annabelles. It’s a classic 50’s diner that’s been hosting car shows for years.
Oh, neat!
First time for me pulling up their website in 20 years. I believe that’s the same waitress who bitched about our rudeness back in the day. The hours have been reduced since my youth, and the prices have gone up, but it’s still an old school diner.
Feel.
I Feel.
Nice.
PSA: This band will be on Austin City Limits later tonight. They kick ass.

I was hoping for White Iron!
I had plans to go see them a couple weeks ago but family obligations got in the way.
Catching the latter part of the show – and most of their segment – after turning from the game. Happily, the three PBS stations available here rotate their broadcasts of ACL, so I can watch it again in a few minutes.
I have to wait until midnight because the 2 stupid PBS stations moved it back last year. I’m looking forward to how they perform live. I’m going to see them on Thursday at The Majestic in Madison. Pretty stoked. It’s a great little 600 person venue.
Nice

I’ve been watching that! I really like how he highlights the proportions and relationships between the strokes. It’s definitely been more helpful that just watching and repeating someone drawing characters free style (although that helps to by seeing how day to day writing is done).

The “hane” 跳ね are also important and he helps you line them up.
(I recall my friend and I discussing this and her asking how to translate it in English. I said you can describe them in English, but there is no word for it.)
Damn it – I think characters use 撥ね!
Yep. Spud’s drunk and the Raven’s are losing. This is a good Saturday.
They are planning a come from behind victory.
Not for the first little girl to cross OMWC’s path after the game…
I assume SP is armed.
A thought (no, I’m not stealing JATNAS’s schtick):
I have found that if a baked good does not involve chocolate, putting vanilla AND almond 1:1 makes everything taste just that much more lovely. It seems to alter the mouth feel to something rounder/richer/I don’t know what the hell I’m trying to say. Just try it.
Marzipan fan are you?
I’ve actually never had marzipan.
We have a family punch recipe that only gets pulled out at Christmas that uses both almond and vanilla. I decided I wanted that at my wedding reception, so I went to the baker and said, “I want X, but I also want you to put an equal amount of almond in the icing.” She looked at me like I had sprouted horns.
But my dragon lady boss was extraordinarily impressed because the cake went with the punch, which she had never experienced before. She LOVED the punch and her niece served it at her wedding reception, too, AND had the baker put almond in the icing with the vanilla.
Now I want some stollen.
There’s one more stollen in the house which hasn’t been opened. World Market has several decent flavors, as does Trader Joe’s. The girlfriend has decided we must have it every holiday and bring it to every local holiday party since most people haven’t had it.
I’d offer you some, but I Just finished the last slice.
It was gone here the day after Christmas.
/hides the stollen that are sitting on the shelves here
Stollen goods.
There’s been a running joke in the house about stolen stollen.
Sorry, I stollen it.
@UCS, did you see my post?
I’m going to assume no, since nothing’s come to mind, and I’ve not been on the site most of today.
See comment #26.
Read and remarked.
Don’t forget I have a thick skin.
Mojeuax: Buy a single one and see if it works in your family.
I googled stollen.
The recipe I looked at said it’s good for wrapping and keeping to give as gifts, so I may try that next year, depending on circumstances.
Oh hell yeah.
My wife brought back several marzipan sweets when she visited Munich a couple years ago. That and a couple packages of Tempo.
So now isn’t when I should mention there’s enough Germans in the area that Hansa import haus is considered a good tihng?
Cost Plus is as good as it gets here.
I was pleased when this became widely available in America ~15 years ago – like, at every bodega even. Too bad I rarely eat sweets any more.
I will say mace works better then almond extract.
I don’t make pound cake on a regular basis because I do want to be thinner.
I got the mace for an apple pie I was experimenting with and it was not awful, but I’ll never use it again.
I did not put almond extract in the cinnamon rolls, but I did put it in the glaze.
There are other things almond doesn’t go with. Like peppermint.
Mace is a more subtle nutmeg (no mansplaining meant, just putting the words out for those who may not know). My recipe involves 1/8 teaspoon of mace in two loaves of pound cake. It only takes a little to be a good flavor.
The standing argument in my group is that all foods can be made better by the addition of chocolate or garlic.
Some things are improved by adding more complexity of flavor, but not all. Pound Cake is in the not category for me.
I’ve twisted the base recipe to a mocha one, an apple spice one, and a vanilla one.
Mace made my apple pie taste…I don’t know, like, wooden maybe? Like I had ground twig in it. It was strong enough I could taste it and I didn’t like it.
I also am not a big chocolate fan. I would rather have citrus anything most of the time.
Garlic is yummy. I use lots when I can be arsed to cook actual food, which I don’t, because what my son likes to eat gets expensive in the quantities he eats them (e.g., if I make a stockpot of beef stroganoff or marinara, he will have eaten it in 24 hours).
Sounds like too much mace was used. It’s one that works like bay leaves, a small amount makes foods better, a lot makes food… off. Even my sister and BIL mock my nephews when they complain I don’t make “regular” mac and cheese.
When I make pound cake, it’s lemon. I do not remember if I put almond extract in my lemon goodies (haven’t made any in so long), except for the above-mentioned punch.
This is the base recipe I use for my pound cake.
lemon pound cake
I want to try an orange one next. Again, I like citrus. A lot.
As do I. Have you tried the zest and juice of Meyer lemons? And don’t I owe you several cookie recipes?
Yes, but I won’t use them until Christmas, so it’s all good.
Hit me up at my handle at the main search engine’s domain.
Will do, thanks!
My favorite cake recipe uses almond extract, it’s delicious.
To clarify, if a recipe would normally use 1 tsp vanilla, do you recommend 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp almond, or 1/2 tsp of each?
1:1
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
Have you seen this? I never know who’s seen it and who hasn’t. http://b10mediaworx.com/recipes.html
I have seen you post the link before, but I haven’t had a chance to go through and look at the recipes yet. Hopefully soon!
Okay, just so you know it’s there. 🙂
Thank you!
She seems a little clingy but still would.
Someone checking in on OMWC
I haven’t seen a beating like this since Rodney King!
He’s in the fetal position, sucking his thumb.
That’s just foreplay for him.
Stick a fork in Baltimore. They’re done.
Ryan Tannehill with the rushing TD? I thought Lamar Jackson was the unstoppable running quaterback that was going to break all the recors.
Tannehill for MVP!
By definition he should be….look at the Titans before and after he took over mid-season.
Yeah, that’s the same reasoning I thought Peyton Manning should have won MVP when he got injured and the Colts sucked.
I wasn’t being *entirely* facetious – that was one hell of a half-season.
Makes one wonder if the Dolphins just sucked that bad at least.
INT – LOL
I mean now the Ravens are just handing the game over.
Idk how you can have the season they did and choke so hard…at home.
If you’d told me this morning that Tennessee would pull the upset tonight, I’d have said I found it unlikely but certainly possible.
If you’d told me it’d be 28-6 Tennessee at the end of the 3rd and with them driving again, I’d have shot you in the head for being such a brazen liar and then burned the church down at your funeral after locking the doors from the outside.
There has to be at least one very happy bettor in this country who’s going to be rich at the end of this game.
/looks at my 215:1 odds ticket I had a couple years back.
It was for the Browns.
So homer odds?
I dropped $10 on the Browns the year they went 0:16. I had several beer bought for me when I told the store at the local pubs, so it was a winning bet for me…
GO!! Chafed and I have been wondering if you were gonna show back up!
Gotta arrange a Metroplex meet-up.
I hope SP keeps her rusty tin can lid collection hidden in her
toy boxfood dish, otherwise I may be down a glib in a few minutes.I must have missed something.
SP keeps OMWC inline with her rusty tin can collection, but the Ravens got the shit beat our of them by a guy who was thought to be a washout as an NFL QB (along with Derrick Henry running all over them); so suicide watch for OMWC.
Oh, ok.
It’s done. Raven s just coughed up a fur ball.
Sorry not sorry OMWC.
/am I doing this right?
Too bad Ravens suck, that could have been a good game.
Jackson reminds me of Fran the man running around back there. Talk about elusive
Voters Widely Accept Misinformation Spread by the Media
Ya don’t say.
Sarcasm aside, good article.
I was arguing with a proggie today on derpbook, who inisisted that our embassy was not attacked and that I was drinking the kool-aid and a dummy to believe it was because that embassy is our best protected embassy so it wasn’t attacked. People believe what they want to believe; I’m not sure it matters who is putting what crap out there, someone will always be spouting the flavor you are looking to consume.
Just because it is heavily defended does not mean it wasn’t attacked.
I refused to actually state that point during the argument, because there is no circumstance I can imagine in which anyone both needs that pointed out and is capable of understanding it.
^^^ That.
AND if you have to start by correcting premises established over a period of several years while also goring a few oxen, then there is no point.
And people wonder why I’m not on Facebook.
A couple of my friends must be wondering why I’ve disappeared from derpbook but either they have the good grace not to question me about it or else they just didn’t notice 🙂
Facebook will decide who sees what. This includes all the friends you WANT to keep up with, all the pages you opt IN to see, and all the groups you opt IN to participate in.
They will lob you shit you don’t want to see, but not show you stuff you want to. You will randomly see distant contacts but never consistently your regular people. And other such nonsense.
If they noticed, your friends will assume FB is fucking with everything and shrug because FB gonna FB.
That sounds like a site that’s worse than useless.
Sadly, it is where the majority of the romance readers are. I will be buying ads when I release Cods & Cuntes.
Also, on Pinterest because a promoted book cover pin pushed into my feed and I clicked on it. Therefore, it worked.
I did notice right before I deleted my account that the front page was not showing me what I expected. Like, every couple minutes it would show me a completely different and apparently random selection of my friends’ posts from hours or days or weeks ago.
Yes. It is highly annoying. I go there mainly to discuss my books and sometimes to post random funny shit.
I don’t discuss politics on Facebook because people are stupid.
My husband’s stepbrother is particularly nasty about this. He’s as proggy as prog can get and spews all sorts of shit. Okay, that’s nice. Husband scrolls on past.
But if my husband posts something snarky (he never writes posts, just shares snark), the stepbrother will descend upon his post like ugly on an ape and start spewing. He finally gave my husband the opening he needed and he husband just said, “You say stuff I don’t like all the time. Unlike you, I just scroll past.”
I don’t discuss politics in most places, because I don’t need that kinds of stress.
I was arguing with a proggie today on derpbook
I used to do this but I stopped and divorced myself from FB a year or so ago. One of the things that prompted it was a hs acquaintance declaring that I should not be engaging him unless I was going to get closer to his (leftist…) position. If I have a fundamental disagreement with you there is no way I am going to “come closer” to your position, you presumptive, arrogant ass.
Are you kidding me?
Nice job, Titans!
It’s begging to be said:
“Remember the Titans!”
Heh.
Now. Go Chiefs!
Oh hell yeah
+1 Herman Boone
In the lead up to the game all I heard was commentators questioning about how the Titans would react when they fell behind. Nobody asked how the Ravens would react when if they fell behind. I thought that relevant since the Ravens hadn’t really been behind in a game.
Earl Thomas said the Patriots didn’t tackle Derrick Henry and the Ravens would. I guess Mr. Thomas was wrong.
Bedtime.
After one last cigarette.
Tomorrow, Glibs.
This is your scenario.
No link?
You’ll give me anything, anything.
You know me.
I’ll work for food.
A line of storms is bearing down on central VA tonight. It was a shit summer as far as thunderstorms last year, at least in my neck of the woods. It would be ironic if we got some decent storms in the early-middle of January.
Are you in a drought?
A thunderstorm drought. (I like thunderstorms…and so far we are not getting snow this winter. So this will do.)
I noticed the same lack of thunderstorms in NYC this past summer.
Well, good night glibs.
Night!
Tried Founders Scotch Ale tonight. Can recommend.
It’s because you are a Dirty Bastard.
It adds up.
Hope it’s better than their very mediocre IPA. I’d never had Founders until a couple weeks ago. Based on the glowing reviews they got on this very site, I decided to try some. Meh. Not bad, but meh.
I’ve got spies.
For Rhywun.
Nice. I missed that one.
Get a room you two.
I’ve suggested it.

I am not drunk enough to fall down another Church rathole.
Have another.

Damn, it’s about as dead cold in here as it is outside…
Countdown! I miss it.
Sir DCC, you must be an Anglophile. Do you have Britbox and if so, is it worthwhile?
No, although I may have used it a few years ago. I did use some unknown (to me) Brit streaming service four or five years ago for all of a month or so. I honestly can’t remember anything about it.
That said, my tastes in Brit-Com are fairly narrow. While there are, no doubt, series I might like, I don’t tend to try out that many series, and just re-watch those I like.
So…um, try at your own risk, I guess?

So…..group tour?
At least the guy with the lantern jaw in the middle is playing it cool.
Damn, the amount of Bloomberg commercials is really incessant. He’s on the YouTube as well. Relentless. He makes me want a big gulp and an extra trans fat donut, hold the gender.
He sure got to Judge Judy.

‘Tis the season for those who don’t actually experience true cold™ to bitch about how “cold” it is.
Isn’t it also the season when non-New Yorkers stay in uncomfortably cold environs, instead of finding better climes?
It’s 60º here – I’m not bitching. Except my heat is off and the wind blowing in makes it kind of chilly….
Not often that NYC is warmer, in January, than D/FW.
Yup. Gonna be a warm one here today too.
