Other than poutine, one of the best things to come out of Canada

Marie Dressler would like a word with you.

    • mexican sharpshooter

This implies poutine was a good thing to leave Canada. I hate to break it to you Spud, like Justin Bieber, Molson Ice, and that abomination they call bacon—Canada doesn’t export their best. They do that on purpose.

      • Shirley Knott

It calmed down in a Forest.

    21st century ebola.

Are we going to get a repeat of the Great Ebola Freakout of 2014?

    • Galt1138

Undoubtedly. Just look at the panic over vaping.

    Privacy is already gone.

Yeah, the NSA already has all our info.

I wonder if anybody else has noticed there’s a new thread.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I did. Granted, I am responsible for the last one, but I digress.

    • Galt1138

Just me so far. I’ve way overdue to check this site.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        Fuck off, Tulpa!

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        And welcome!

      • Shirley Knott

        You’re new here?
Then let me welcome you with a hearty Fuck Off,
        Tulpa!
        {it’s tradition}

      • Galt1138

Nope. I think I got invited pretty much from the start of the site, after the mass exodus of us from Reason’s comment section.

I just haven’t checked the site much at all in the past 5-6 months. Since my family got back from our Philippines trip in mid August, both my wife and I have been swamped at our respective jobs.

I work at Fox Sports, and our busiest time of year is late August through January with college football and NFL. Plus, we have the Super Bowl this year, so it’s even busier.

I’ve been so wiped out when I get home that I haven’t had time or energy to do much of anything.

Given all the crazy news the past several months, I know I’ve missed some great content here.

      • mexican sharpshooter

        I work at Fox Sports

Now I know your Tulpa. Losing the UFC contract to ESPN. You have any idea how much their app sucks?

      • Brochettaward

Tell us what an insufferable prick Joe Buck is.

      • Chafed

        Yes. Details please.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

He was on Carolla’s podcast a couple years back and Buck came off as a fairly decent dude. He’s aware that some people don’t like him.

    Exciting times.

    Indeed.

    Zero fucks given.

I concur other than it is hilarious. What’s the over under on when they go crawling back to the Queen?

    • mexican sharpshooter

Depends, how fast do you suppose the two of them can burn through £40million or whatever it is he’s supposedly worth?

      • westernsloper

40 Million? I had no idea. Ya, that may last awhile.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

Is that his personal worth? Or lumped in as part of the Windsors? I’d assume he wouldn’t, personally, be worth all that much, but I am hardly some royal watcher.

    • Q Continuum

“What’s the over under on when they go crawling back to the Queen?”

It will happen within 2 years.

      • Winston

        Is that Ryan McMaken?

    • Gustave Lytton

      After the divorce.

      • Rhywun

^this is probably the correct answer

My original answer was going to be “never”, because they will keep themselves afloat with reality shows and other schlock housewives who are fascinated with “royalty” like.

    • KSuellington

I’d put the over/under on their divorce within 5 years and bet heavily on the under.

      • Mojeaux

        8 years. 5 looks fishy.

  7. Galt1138

2 feet, 2 inches. Amazing he lived as long as he did. Looks like he lived life as full as he could. Bittersweet.

    • Galt1138

Dammit! How did this show up under the wrong comment?

I haven’t even had an adult beverage yet today.

      • mexican sharpshooter

        Aw. Tulpa’s first Gilmore.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

That has to be a new record.

      • Shirley Knott

        Looks like second post. Bravo!

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        A record for the ages.

It’s like the 4-minute mile of bad posting records.

      • Galt1138

No, I think I’ve done worst in the past.

      • Shirley Knott

Ah, no. See above. He pre-dates my arrival, but has been in “exciting times.”
Sometimes I worry about the percentage of glibs going through such – are we prone? ;-\

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

Fine, I withdraw my “Fuck off, Tulpa”.

        *kicks rock*

      • Jarflax

Why withdraw it he’s still a Tulpa? In fact Fuck off all you Tulpa(s)(ae).

      • Nephilium

I haven’t even had an adult beverage yet today.

        That’s your own damned fault.

      • Galt1138

True. It’s still a bit early out here in southern CA.

      • Nephilium

It’s Saturday, if I didn’t do the early morning spin class (08:00) I’d be tempted to stop at a brewery after the class.

      • mexican sharpshooter

There is absolutely nothing worse for you than to try and recover from a workout with alcohol.

On the other hand, you’re just made yourself a cheap drunk,

      • Nephilium

Not necessarily beer. And most of my long distance rides involve stopping at breweries (longest ride so far being 75 miles).

      • mexican sharpshooter

I’ve read that one before, i actually sweat off a few pounds when I work out so, I’ll hydrate a bit first.

        Then dehydrate.

      • Nephilium

MS: First thing I order at any brewery I stop at is a glass of water (and bring in any empty water bottles to get refilled). Then I’m generally sticking with session beers. It also provides incentive to continue on to the next stop instead of just heading home.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Its 1545…on a Saturday. I’m an hour ahead, drunk already, and about to fire up the grill.

      • Galt1138

        Nice!

I always drink a glass of water with every beer/whiskey. Yes, I make more trips to the bathroom. But, I never get a hangover.

I also never drink on an empty stomach.

      • MikeS

I think that is one step above temperance. But you do you.

And I won’t call you Tulpa like these other Tulpas. I’ve seen you post here off-and-on for months. Of course, the only reason I remember you is because of your Jack Burton avatar.

  8. "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

I hope the Virginia protesters ignore the court and arm themselves anyways. Any blood is on the governor’s hands. No more bending the knee to fashionable tyrants. And some point you should care about something beyond getting “strange new respect” from the NYT.

    • slumbrew - double secret satan

Any blood is on the governor’s hands

True, but the vast majority of Americans will be told otherwise.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

At the point that they’re at, it no longer matters what anyone perceives. The governor has declared war on his own citizens. The optics phase is over

      • Winston

Problem, will enough of them realize this? There is no turning back?

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

        Free Virginia

Yes, Virginia, there is a Supremacy Clause.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

The same people who defended Bill Weld as VP and are pimping Lincoln Chaffee want you to believe they’re not anti-guns. They’re controlled opposition and should be viewed as such

      • Galt1138

        Damn right.

    • Gustave Lytton

      None dare call it treason?

    • mexican sharpshooter

I hope the Virginia protesters ignore the court and arm themselves anyways

If you spent the last ten years going all over the internet, preparing for zombies, shouting μολὼν λαβέ, at random people, warning everyone of “the buggaloo”…

You see what I’m getting at.

    • Rhywun

You’re going to be searched for weapons before you can enter the protest-cage. So anything “interesting” that happens will be in the surrounding streets.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

They can’t stop thousands of armed people. Unless they want a massacre.

      • Not Adahn

They can put up roadblocks away from the protest site, stop busses, search them and seize them if contraband is found…

      • Gustave Lytton

And if the weapons holders aren’t ready and willing to use their weapons on “innocent” people.

      • Rhywun

        I’m just reporting what is.

“Thousands of armed people” storming a weapons checkpoint is not going to make their case for them, IMHO.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

        Fair point

      • Grumbletarian

Then don’t go to the checkpoints. A few sawzalls will cut through chain link fences in no time. THe cops won’t be able to guard everywhere.

      • Jarflax

The point is not that there are tactics that would allow the protesters to infiltrate or even to win a pitched battle. It is that in a Civil War in the United States, he who shoots first loses, because he will be blamed for starting the war and most people, including me, do not want the boogaloo. It is not going to to go the way the loud mouths at the range think it will go. I am not virtue signalling for the NSA when I say that, I sincerely believe as firmly as I believe the sun will rise tomorrow that if we have a Civil War we will come out of it with a country that is unrecognizable and unfree.

      • Gustave Lytton

Agreed. The Revolutionary War was a very lucky aberration.

I’ve said it before, but the OKC bombing isn’t seen as a blow for freedom and liberty.

      • Winston

if we have a Civil War we will come out of it with a country that is unrecognizable and unfree.

Man, I was worried that I was becoming too optimistic about the future.

      • Winston

Yeah McVeigh was Clinton’s lifeline. And things have gotten a lot worse in 25 years.

  9. Winston

Coonman and co. are hoping for some corpses to finally kill the Second Amendment. Amazing to see how weak are so-called “rights” are.

    • Winston

      *Our*

    • Jarflax

Nit pick, the weakness is in the guarantees of rights or in the degree to which they are respected by Government. The rights merely provide a framework for judging which Governmental acts are proper and which are tyrannical. There will always be tyrants. Our rights will only be respected as long as there are sufficient ‘patriots’ to oppose them.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        If not tonight, than tomorrow.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        then?

      • Nephilium

Then how is it a waste to open it? Unless you’re a couple of bottles in already.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

Ah – just not sure it won’t be totally overwhelmed by the food.

It’s a great wine, but that _might_ be a bit much for it. I suppose I could grab some beer while I’m out; I’m already exploding the “avoid carbs” thing with that pizza.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

I should add that I’m really just looking for an excuse to open this wine – I had it at a restaurant last year and loved it. Had it again on NYE (same restaurant) and tracked it down (importer listed state wholesalers, called the wholesaler to find a retailer).

I’m thinking of buying a case, which will knock 15% off the bottle price, but have this one bottle on hand to confirm I love it before dropping a small pile on a case.

      • Nephilium

        You could always go bourbon.

Of course, I’ve been cutting down on the beer as I work on hitting my GlibFit goal weight by April.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

I should add that I’m on Manhattan #2, so my palate is hardly in top shape, so beer it shall be. Back to brown liquor afterwards, probably.

      • Nephilium

Well, if you’re looking for an excuse. I’ll give it to you. Drink what you want!

If you think it’s worth saving, then crack the bottle tomorrow.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

Yeah, I’ll crack it tomorrow / later this week. I’m not optimistic that Frank’s Red Hot will really go well with it.

    • KSuellington

      What’s the wine?

  12. Winston

I remember the good old days when it was assumed that journalists, Big Business, University grads and urbanites would be libertarian because hey that is what it was like in 19th-Century England!

Lest you think I am strawmanning look up Herbert Spencer’s “The New Toryism” or the how the assumptions of China’s political liberalization were heavily predicated on the assumption that the uneducated rural peasantry will always be the bulwark of the Chicoms.

    • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

China is a testament to the failed predictions of the neoliberal. There is no way getting around it, the free traders were humiliatingly wrong on all fronts on China. And it’s looking like the same is true with Cuba

      • Winston

Neoliberals are a bunch of white supremacist reactionaries. Oh the irony!

      • Jarflax

And what does the new Winston’s Just Say’n block think that means? This particular snark that Winston drops here approximately 5 times a day annoys the hell out me because it is utterly pointless. We support free trade because we support economic freedom and free trade in and of itself is a massive part of economic freedom. The fact that it did not immediately usher in the Millennium is irrelevant to the question of whether free trade is better than the alternatives. So basically this snark boils down to Winston repeating “Herbert Spencer made a mistake!”, with a Nelson laugh every few hours.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

All I said was that trade does not lead to political liberalization. I don’t know how that is controversial. I support trade for other reasons. But that myth needs to die.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

It should also be noted that we do not have free trade with China, so I’m not sure what you’re upset about. I find your angry response to be weird

      • Winston

Also the “trade will lead to politicial liberalization” was often used as a rebuttal to protectionists and Cold Warriors who argued that trade with the USSR, China, etc. would be enriching totalitarians and America’s enemies.

      • Jarflax

Does not necessarily and immediately lead to political liberalization. The fleshed out argument is this:

Free Trade allows the formation and expansion of a middle class.
This leads to an expansion of the portion of the populace that has a stake in political activities, access to education, and otherwise is interested in, and desirous of influencing political decisions.
Eventually, once that portion of the populace is large enough it will take, or be granted political power.

The mistake, if there is one, is in not factoring the difference between an aristocratic/monarchic society with power based solely on land ownership and one where the reigns of power derive from ideological controls. In the land based society the rise of people who are in many cases wealthier than the aristocrats, but who do not hold significant land, more or less automatically shifts power away from the aristocrats/land owners. In a society where power is not tied to land and is at least theoretically not restricted by class the newly wealthy are more easily absorbed into the existing regime.

In other words in 19th century Britain the Scottish mill owner became immensely powerful, but was excluded from political power by birth. Thus the fact that the mill owners were a massive economic power base put them in tension with the existing political power base which eschewed trade, and held its wealth in land. As the relative economic power of industry increased versus that of agriculture the power shifted from the aristocrats to the middle class and society liberalized. In 19th Century Prussia the aristocrats did not eschew trade, in fact they wholeheartedly embraced it and thus the aristocrats did not see an erosion of power due to the economic shift. China is more akin to Prussia in this.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

Your theory has literally never been proven to be true.

Trade enriches both participants. That’s it. It’s not some magic that liberalizes totalitarian states. And no one actually believes that it does. If they did then they’d be demanding an end to sanctions against Iran, Russia, and North Korea.

      • Jarflax

        1. I am explaining the theory that Winston is mocking because he tends to leave out nuances in his quest for “Haha you were wrong!” moments. I am not espousing it, although I think it has some limited merits. The portions of the Chinese populace that are relatively free today are larger than they were previously.

        2. The people who espouse the theory are not the people pushing sanctions generally.

        3. Since the entire theory is based on taking the specific examples of Britain and Holland and attempting to generalize from a simplistic narrative of the development of liberty in those societies your argument that it has never proven true is somewhat inaccurate. There were clearly other factors involved, but the rise of free trade in those societies is also pretty clearly tied to a rise in liberty, you can argue causality but dismissing the link is IMHO inaccurate.

      • "Tulsi Gabbard Apologist"

Look, I use to believe in the theory too. I don’t because, in my opinion (though I acknowledge that you dispute this and that’s a different discussion) there is little to no evidence to support it.

We cannot confuse “wealth” with “freedom”. Trade does make people wealthy. That is the only reason why I support liberalized trade. But, people didn’t become more “free” since the repeal of the Corn Laws (it just reduced costs, as foreign grain wasn’t embargoed under the Corn Laws) or since China joined the WTO. People became “wealthier”. But, in the case of China, people did become more free, because the increased wealth of the nation allowed the state to surveil and suppress on a scale that was previously unimaginable.

I would quibble with your Prussian example, but on the whole we agree that trade makes both participants wealthier. Where I disagree is that it inevitably leads to more freedom. I think that requires a leap of faith that I no longer have.

      • Winston

You accuse of lacking nuance but you ignore all the times I do address nuances that I think have been overlooked: Taiwan and South Korea having authoritarian US-backed regimes in the past, How the Wealthy businesses in China are intimately connected to the Chicoms, how the totalitarian nature of the ChiComs prevents these wealthy educated urbanites from resisting the regime even if they do oppose it, how the urban-rural split makes these wealthy educated urbanite even more dependent of the regime.

Interesting that you state this theory is a simplistic generalization of English History when I have cracked the same thing!

      • Jarflax

You aren’t getting it. I am not disagreeing with you except perhaps in some of the nuances. I am saying the horse is dead and it smells when you beat it.

      • Winston

You forgot religion. The Scottish Mill owner may not have been an Anglican and was thus excluded from political power on that basis which would have put him in tension with the Anglican Aristocracy.

Eventually, once that portion of the populace is large enough it will take, or be granted political power.

This assumes that this will always happen or that once this portion of the populace has political power it will use this power in a liberal fashion.

      • Winston

Actually Herbert Spencer was complaining about the state of English liberalism and how it was becoming statist. I bring up his essay up because he clearly states that English Whiggism was urban and from trade and manufacturing areas while Toryism was rural.

Also I am also pointing out that the supposed libertarianness of urbanites and university professors has been highly exaggerated.

The fact that it did not immediately usher in the Millennium is irrelevant to the question of whether free trade is better than the alternatives.

This is a strawman. Where did I say this? I am pointing out that people have made clear predictions about what would happen to China that appear to wrong at this moment and I looking at explanations as to why this is the case.

      • Ted S.

I don’t see any search for explanations. All I see is “See, I told you so!” sneering.

      • Jarflax

Yes, you are pointing out that some people were wrong in a prediction. It is customary when you do this, to do it once or twice and then drop it, because it is unfair to keep bringing up old errors. If someone actually posts “free trade is guaranteed to liberalize country X” then your point can be raised as a rebuttal, but since no one has posted that I repeat, you are just harping on an apparent prediction error by some philosophers.

I was not making a straw man, I was pointing out that even if you had been the sole person tasked with choosing between free trade and sanctions, and you in your predictive righteousness had known clearly that no liberalization would result, free trade would still have been the better choice, so in fact the thing you are harping on does not matter, even a little bit, because the decisions would be the same either way.

      • Winston

apparent prediction error by some philosophers.

Eh, it was an article of faith among a large number of libertarians since 1970s.

      • Ted S.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Winston’s shtick is basically “Libertarian solons predicted the future incorrectly, and I as the One True Libertarian am going to snottily point this out over and over!”

      • Winston

Considering I was bashed for not believing in the Libertarian Moment pardon my lack of respect for “the libertarian solons”. Also I don’t see much evidence these solons have learned their lessons.

      • Winston

A major reason for China’s political liberalization was that it was thought that it would play out similar to Taiwan and South Korea. However they overlooked the key fact that their authoritarian regimes were heavily dependent on US support so when the US withdrew this support in the late ’80s these regimes collapsed. Not to mention that it wasn’t for the US military they would be either ruled by Japan or Communists.

      • Not Adahn

Oh hey Winston — You were looking for the non-supported spoilers function a while back. Just so you know, you can always ROT13 things like that. Plus it has the advantage in that ROT13’d English bears an uncanny resemblance to Elder Gods speech.

I was oddly happy when I realized my dog has the runs, because it meant I didn’t have to schlep downtown to the house party I was supposed to go to.

I will missing seeing an out-of-town friend, but he’s here until Monday. And he’ll be back.

  13. KSuellington

The spread for the Niners and the Chiefs is +7.5 for the games tomorrow. I could see the Niners blowing them out or them winning by a TD. I think the Chiefs will prevail, although after what they’ve done so far I wouldn’t sleep on the Titans. I’d like to see a Joe Montana Bowl though, that seems the most exciting match up.

    • Nephilium

My co-workers (being in Memphis) are all about the Titans being in the Super Bowl.

      • KSuellington

The only Titans game I’ve seen this year was last week. I remember a few knowledgeable pundits at the beginning of the season saying that they’d be in the SB. Let’s see, should be a couple good games tomorrow.

      • Nephilium

I saw their first game of the season… at least most of it. We switched over to an Indians/Twins game near the end to watch something we had a chance of winning.

    • Ted S.

I’d like to see a rematch of SB I.

      • KSuellington

Unfortunately Ted, I don’t think that will happen, but you never know. I think the Packers are overmatched. Will the Niners cover is the real question I believe.

      • Ted S.

The Packers won’t have Alex Light at RT this week.

      • Rhywun

        #metoo

      • KSuellington

I have money on the Niners, but I bought a point as I think it may get pretty close. Let’s see. I think the Niners D will be too much for Rodgers. With Kwon Alexander and Dee Ford back they looked back to form last week. The Pack won’t be as easy as the Vikings tho.

      • Galt1138

Not me, and it’s not just because I’m a Bear fan. I think it’d be shitty TV ratings. 49ers vs Chiefs is better TV. Granted, I’m only looking at this from by job perspective.

      • KSuellington

They matchup real well. I want to see what Mahomes will do against the Niners solid defense. That has the potential to be the most exciting Super Bowl. Plus Joe Montana.

      • Galt1138

Indeed. It’ll be a good game.

Even though they always translate to good ratings, I’m really glad the Patriots didn’t make it.

      • KSuellington

Yeah, I think a lot of the Brady hate is overblown, but the guy is the GOAT (which is the source of much of that hate). I am fairly sick of the Pats being in the SB though. It’s nice to see some teams competing that haven’t been in a while.

      • Nephilium

/looks towards the Browns and the Lions.

        You sure about that?

      • KSuellington

It may be a bit longer Neph.

      • Galt1138

No doubt, he’s an amazing player. Your sentiment is what I meant: just tired of the Pats.

      • Nephilium

        KSuellington:

All I want from the Browns is a winning season. And don’t ask me about the new coach yet.

I’d love to see a Browns/Lions Superbowl though. As the only two nonexpansion (depending on your expansion definition) teams that haven’t been in the Superbowl, it would be epic.

I was on a flight once where the crew was giving someone shit about wearing a Detroit Lions jersey. I stepped up for the kid and said, “I’m from Cleveland, I may dislike the city of Detroit, but I can’t mock a fan for cheering for their team.”

      • KSuellington

I always kinda root for the underdogs so I would absolutely love either of those teams to finally make it. The Browns are plagued by terrible ownership as I understand it. Doesn’t the owner there have the final decision on football matters? That’s never a good sign. The GM and head coach have to have some kind of balance and the owner constantly stepping in fucks that up. It looked like they finally were about to turn a corner and then this year happened.

      • Nephilium

KS: It’s bad ownership, and just a bad culture in the team. The city is going to back the team regardless of what they did, and we’re going to live with that. But we’ll bitch about every coach, quarterback, and decision made.

      • JD is Unemployed

I’d like to see a rematch of SB I.

I think all those men are either very old and in no shape to play pro football, or dead, and in no shape to play pro football.

      • Galt1138

It’d make it a quick game.

    • Not Adahn

It wasn’t even mispriced. The $0.01 was for the nonfunctional, not-for-sale display model.

      • Rhywun

I hesitate to wade to deep into this story I don’t really care about, but…

Why on earth would they put a price tag on a display item? I have never seen that anywhere ever.

      • Nephilium

I’ve seen that during the brief time I did inventory work. I can see the store leaving them out after that as well.

      • Not Adahn

Yeah, I think it has to do with tracking the display item.

      • KSuellington

Out of curiosity, what states/places are you considering? I’ve got a young family and most of my relations outside of Ireland live within 10 miles so we are probably here for 15 years, but this place has been steadily ruined. It’s sad, they are in the process of totally destroying a paradise. Once the last is out of high school I imagine we are out.

      • Galt1138

New Hampshire (although I’ll never get my Filipina wife in that cold a climate), Tennessee, Texas, and maybe Arizona.
I check CATO’s freedom ranking of the 50 states every few years as one of my guides.

      • Galt1138

And you’re right how they’re destroying a paradise. CA is such an amazingly beautiful state, and the climate, especially here is the LA area, is damn near perfect. If I miss snow it’s a two hour drive away. The midwestern autumn is really the only season I can’t find a facsimile of here.
Alas, with the majority of the state govt in the hands of the Dems, and many of those bordering on Stalinists, I’m afraid there’s no saving the state.

      • KSuellington

Yeah, I think it has gone past the point of no return at this point and it’s an absolute shame. I’d love to see the state split up, but I doubt that’ll happen. If we don’t end up in one of the mountain states it may be somewhere in LatinAm to retire, depending on how the politics go there over the next decade or two.

      • KSuellington

Yeah, I like the west so it’ll probably be one of the mountain states or Nevada right on the other side of the Sierras.

  17. Mojeaux

    Joe Montana.

I have nothing to back this up, BUT! I did not like the Chiefs-Montana years. He seemed like a washup and we were getting sloppy seconds and he didn’t want to be here at all. Now, that was 20 years ago and my remembery isn’t great, but I am carrying that lingering impression.

Galt1138, I remember you now because your avatar is AWESOME. One of the best movies ever.

    • LJW

This is the Chiefs best chance to get to the SB. If they fail I’m fully convinced they are cursed

      • Mojeaux

You are not wrong, my friend. I am nervous for tomorrow.

      • Galt1138

I think they’ll pull it off. Going to be a good game.

      • Mojeaux

The Titans have beaten us before, so…

      • Nephilium

        Cursed… hah.

    • KSuellington

The Niners were right to trade him, it needed to happen with Steve Young the young talent that had been playing a lot due to Montana’s injuries and slightly erratic play as he aged. He did bring a divisional championship to KC though the first year he played (I think it was only two years before he retired). There were plenty of Niners fans who didn’t like it one bit, even though Young was awesome. I grew up watching the Montana/Young era, it was an incredible run of football that.

      • Mojeaux

Oh, I believe the Niners were right to trade him. I think he should have retired at the top.

I have no real feelings for or against the Niners at all (except for their baseball counterparts *coff2014coff*). And Steve Young is my [[[people]]]. I just always felt a little oogey about having Montana.

      • KSuellington

Eddie D almost blocked the trade at the last moment, he just couldn’t quite stomach getting rid of the guy who helped turn around the franchise. KC didn’t get a bad deal there though, they got Marcus Allen because of Joe and that was their first divisional win in a long time I think. Young is a class act, good guy, and yeah, a Mormon, I forgot about that.

      • Mojeaux

        So is [[[Andy Reid]]].

      • KSuellington

Didn’t know that. Let’s see if Andy can pull it off tomorrow, he tends to have a tough time in the playoffs. I’m pulling for your team, until the Super Bowl that is (assuming the Niners are in it, if not, I’ll be rooting and betting for KC).

    • Galt1138

But more! When they are in the lifeblood of the Earth and Jack says, “Do any of these people speak savvy English?” the dude who says, “Who is this guy?” James Lew. Even hotter than Lightning.

      • Galt1138

There’s a really good documentary about Kurt Russell’s Dad called The Battered Bastards of Baseball. It’s about Kurt’s Dad, who quit Hollywood acting to start an independent minor league baseball team. Lots of colorful characters with Kurt interviewed for parts of it.

SP and OMWC recommended it a couple years ago and it’s worth the watch. Very entertaining even if your not a baseball fan.

      • KSuellington

Thanks PP, I am a fan and will check it out. If you haven’t seen it, and even if you aren’t a racing fan, I’d highly recommend Senna as a doc, about the late, great Ayrton Senna. Fabulous flick.

      • PudPaisley

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I just added it to my watch list on Prime.

      • Galt1138

Very cool. Have to check it out.

If memory serves, Kurt Russell was a pretty good player himself, and could’ve made a career of it if not for Hollywood winning out.

      • PudPaisley

I think Kurt started out as a bat boy for the team and then eventually played on it.

    • MikeS

He led the Chiefs to their first division title in 22 years. He played there 2 years and got them to the playoffs both years. “Sloppy seconds” never sounded so good.

      • Mojeaux

He wasn’t “ours.” He left his heart in San Francisco.

      • MikeS

Of course he did. But he obviously gave you everything he had left. Thinking “oogey” of him seems extremely unfair considering what he did for your team.

        Maybe I’m just biased.

    https://www.aier.org/article/regulations-bringing-back-dirt-filth-disease/

The nation that perfected indoor plumbing and emancipated women from household toil has forced a reversion to a time when we had to hand wash everything, keep basins for washing hands, and slog to the outhouse. This is not hyperbole: the pro-misery crowd has turned against all flushing in favor of the composting toilet.

We thought these bad old days of dirt, filth, and disease were gone forever. Now they are coming back, gradually, regulation by regulation.

    ….

We should not be condemned by government agencies to have dirty clothes, dirty dishes, tepid baths, pathetic flow in our sinks and showers, and filthy toilets that have to be plunged and plunged until we have to replace the tank’s gears because not even water flows through them to keep them clean and functioning.

This whole thing is a bloody outrage, please excuse my language.

the World changed, did you? why?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

OTOH, My kids were raised in a middle class, Tradesman Dad and Homemaker Wife scene, so Spoiled in a way…

      • Galt1138

A good way, I’d say. Me and my siblings were raised lower middle class. We al turned out fine. Granted, my mom knew how to instill good values in us.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

You are old, like most of us, aren’t you?
        /56

      • Galt1138

        Yep. 49

      • Galt1138

        I’ll be 50 in March.

      • Spudalicious

        Friggin millenial.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

        Friggin millenial.

        That’s Gen-X.

I’m a couple months behind him.

      • Rhywun

        That’s Gen-X.

Right? What kind of geezer doesn’t know that.

      • Raven Nation

        Whippersnapper

      • straffinrun

We would be solidly middle class if only I were working. It’s tough for me to accept her working full time when it’s not necessary. I understand her desire to work, however. *Shrugs*

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        I need a job,

      • Galt1138

We definitely had some tough years growing up. My mom worked her ass off to put 5 kids in private grade school (none of us wanted to go to private high school; Catholic grade school can have that effect).

My dad was pretty useless. Could’ve been a really successful insurance agent if he didn’t love booze and gambling more.

Still, at the time, I don’t think any of us realized money got tight more often than it should have, given our parents jobs. Most our childhood memories are very happy. I guess kids can be resilient, as I know there are memories that could’ve scarred us if we dwelled on them.

      • Rhywun

I guess kids can be resilient, as I know there are memories that could’ve scarred us if we dwelled on them.

Oh, I’ve got a few of those. Got rip-roaring drunk with an older brother once, and he reminded me of a lot of them that I had forgotten.

By the next day I had forgotten almost all of them again. One memory was so outrageous it stuck with me.

      • Ted S.

We were decidedly working class, with the added difficulty of Mom having screaming fits about there not being enough money, combined with her having a lot of resentment towards those better off than us. Fun times when my sister married up.

      • Rhywun

I have experience with both single mom with four kids in America, and one year in Germany with a working Vati and Hausfrau Mutti. I have a pretty strong opinion which one is objectively better.

      • gbob

Look, sleeping with single moms is great. Sleeping with four kids? Little off brand, you know?

    • gbob

I was pretty lucky. Had enough scratch to spend two years as a full time dad when my son was born. After the death of my daughter, I needed it. Wife needed to work to keep sane, so it was ideal. Went into teaching after, so that I was always around for my son until he was about eight. Spent a year as a poker player that paid the mortgage for another year.

As good as a one working parent home? No, but it still gave the boy a full time parent for the most important years. I’ll always be thankful.

      • Gustave Lytton

Not the same as a kid, but I worked graves when we got our dog so she basically got full attention from both of us and bonded to both. I’d come home in the morning, get the dog up for the park or whatever, she’d go to sleep for a couple of hours, get up with the wife and spend the day with her or just nap with me, then both of us when I’d get up, and a couple more hours with my wife alone after I went to work & before they went to bed. Really made a huge difference in the long term.

    • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

I really don’t like the two-working parents dynamic.

Wife and I had a solid argument because she resents not getting a break from the kiddo on the weekends. Stay at home mom doesn’t automagically improve the dynamic. We’ve been low key feuding about this for a couple years.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

(not saying that a stay at home parent isnt something that we value, just that we fight and bicker just like everybody else)

    • DEG

      Sorry straff.

  25. Yusef drives a Kia

    This is my philosophy,

Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

    • straffinrun

      Pony Boy! ?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

You have been in Nippon too long, you need BACON!!

      • straffinrun

True. Long time expats invariably go a little bonkers.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I’m telling you, it’s a lack of BACON my Man, get help, soon..

    • Rhywun

From 2014 on, I can only associate that with Interstellar and Michael Caine.

      • Galt1138

Heh. That and Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School. Both great movies in their own way.

      • Rhywun

I loved Back to School but I don’t remember it that much. And yeah, I love Interstellar.

      • Chafed

Then it’s time to watch it again. If not for Rodney (and it should be for Rodney) then for Sam Kinison.

      • Rhywun

        Oh, for both – definitely.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

      There is also this

UNDER the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you ‘grave for me: 5
      Here he lies where he long’d to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        very cool,

  26. gbob

Some days are just plain good days. Snowed in with the weather, so we made the most of it. Slept in. Made some soughdough blueberry pancakes. No kids. No grandkid. Nothing happening. Spent the day dancing to jazz albums, and we started the cocktails at noon. Spent an afternoon in bed, then a nice dinner and and an evening of playing all our “guilty favorite” albums, very loud, and ended with dancing and singing “Paradise by the dashboard lights” very loudly and off key together until she passed out and I put her to bed.

Now I’m sitting out in the vestibule with the final cocktail, enjoying a little bit of weed, and appreciating the little things in life.

Not too often that I end my night in a real good place.

What’s the opposite of schadenfreude? Lucky bastard! Enjoy!

        What’s the opposite of schadenfreude?

        Jealousy?

      • MikeS

        Jelly camp

      • gbob

Well, there are some drawbacks. Not all weed and roses. Right now I find myself completely out of vermouth, and I just bought a bottle yesterday. Jesus. What do I drink now? Oh. That’s right. Straight whiskey.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Oh My God no Vermouth? you Heathen….

      • Spudalicious

Who the hell drinks a bottle of vermouth in one day?!?

      • gbob

Manhattans for me, Martinis for her. It adds up, as it turns out.

That woman is the first I ever met who can keep up with me, drink for drink. You remember that Marion chick from Raiders of the Lost Ark? That’s her.

      • Spudalicious

Waay too much vermouth in the martinis. You should just be waving the cap over the glass.

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

I thought martinis were dry vermouth?

      • Rhywun

Been cutting back lately, so I haven’t had a Manhattan in weeks. But I have enough rye left for at least two which means one now and maybe if I’m good one tomorrow on MLK Eve.

      • westernsloper

You remember that Marion chick from Raiders of the Lost Ark?

        Yep.

      • Gustave Lytton

I had a huge crush on Karen Allen as a kid watching Raiders.

      • Ted S.

        Freudenschade?

      • straffinrun

Jealousy? OK. I was thinking “resentment”.

    • MikeS

That sounds like as near a perfect day as one could get. Good for you, man.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I miss that… Good on ya!

    • Spudalicious

      That’s a good day.

    • Rhywun

I’m a homebody so I’ve always loved snow days.

    • Gustave Lytton

That’s a life in full right there.

    • Galt1138

Really glad to hear it. Enjoy.

I know it’s a cliche. But, life really is a gift, and we deserve to enjoy it, struggles and all.

    • DEG

This sounds like a good day.

Well, my wife, stepson and I have been lazy most of the day. Time to get off my ass, get cleaned up, so we can enjoy a movie night together.

I’ll tip a pint to all of you later. Good night, Glibs!

    • gbob

Good night, and happy joy Galt.

Oh, and fuck you Tulpa, since I missed your return post earlier.

    • Festus

Good to see you back, Galt!

On the plus side, that led to this gem

    • slumbrew - double secret satan

      They’re playing here Wednesday.

      Hrm…

  30. Festus

Whelp, crossed a personal Rubicon this afternoon. I bought and consumed prune juice for medicinal purposes.

    • Spudalicious

Lol! I try to avoid looking in the mirror these days. I’ve got a picture on my phone from five years ago and every time I see it, I say to myself. “what the hell happened to that guy?”.

      • Festus

Oh yeah. I’ve actually kept myself up okay but the pain meds bunged me up something fierce. I was trying to avoid taking them at all but I fucked up yesterday morning.

      • Spudalicious

Been there, done that. You get behind the pain curve, and you’re in trouble. And when you’re eating enough painkillers that you’re pooping gray chalk, prune juice is a good idea.

      • Festus

Doesn’t help that I can’t “hurry it along”, as it were, for the time being…

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

Huh…so, you saved the best for later tonight?

    • westernsloper

Congratulations, I hope this occasion passes well.

      • Spudalicious

Yeah, we don’t want this ending up as a shitty experience.

    • Ted S.

      Hawt.

      • Festus

        “Wet and wild!”

    • DEG

I did that after my tonsils were out. The diet and the pain killers had me a bit plugged up. It was…. umm… an experience when everything got unplugged.

      Best wishes on your recovery.

  31. Yusef drives a Kia

God, I need an ear, I’m totally lost and confused, and don’t know which way to go…

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      OTOH, I’m Good, I just fake it…

    • Jarflax

I’ve never been in a place as tough as you are right now, but I have had some pretty bad times and it felt like there was no path through them back to the good stuff, but I got back to the good stuff nonetheless, and I am naturally a much more pessimistic and dark guy than the Yusef we have come to know. Try to keep focusing on the little joys you find along the way. You have been a trooper, posting happy moments about your kites, your ‘golf’, and your grand kids, try to keep in that vein.

      • Jarflax

I mean mentally. As far as what you post, we are here to listen if you need to vent.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Thanks Jf, It’s a dichotomy, i have to live for the Wife and Myself, but we are apart, so what is the priority?
I think it’s me, so i can keep a place float, but I feel guilty for actually living and not being in misery, even though I am,
        does that make any sense?

      • Jarflax

Yes. It feels disloyal not to be crying and tearing your hair every minute of the day but it isn’t. Wendy would not want you to be huddled in a corner crying, and the few laughs you get playing golf or with kites or with the pup, or with the grand kids are absolutely necessary to keep you going. And it isn’t really a dichotomy, you have to take care of yourself to be able to do anything at all for her.

    • Spudalicious

      You have mail.

    • westernsloper

Don’t listen to that listen to this.

    • Gender Traitor

Yes, I’ve posted this link before, but this is what you get when you play “Edmund Fitzgerald” backwards.

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

Hmmm…that plays into one of my links for the night shift post (presuming it’s going up in 30).

      • Gender Traitor

We’re getting a night shift?? Yaaaaaaay!

And here I am – out of wine. : (

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

Well, fingers crossed for it, at least

        Sorry abut the cardbordeaux status.

      • Festus

Damn. I’m about ready to crash.

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

Uggh…you’re killin’ me here, my irregular* friend.

        *soon-to-be regular?

      • Spudalicious

Sorry, buddy. It’s still pending, so it ain’t happening and I don’t have the power to publish it.

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

        Well………………………..shit.

After 56 years, I have exactly 1 IRL friend left, all the other ones are dead or Commies, and I don’t hang out with either type.
I would rather hang out here with a bunch of cyborgs, than all those humans I meet, although the disc players are pretty cool, Musicians suck…

    • Rhywun

You’re not the only one that’s happened to.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

When you realise your oldest, best friends are commies, painful, but needed

      • slumbrew - double secret satan

That’s life. Friends fade away as they get caught up in their own families and lives. The good news is that friendships can be rekindled, new friendships made, etc.

        The only constant is change.

    • straffinrun

Define “friend”. I know a shitload of people IRL and would call maybe 20 “friends”.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I never had more than about 5-6, the others are acquaintances

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

        would call maybe 20 “friends”

      • straffinrun

        She counted by the liter.

      • Sir Digby's tnetennba

I would have gone with, “When you were making a withdrawal?”

      • mikey

        I’ve always liked this defintion.
“A friend is someone who, at three o’clock in the morning, will help you hide the body.”

      • Yusef drives a Kia

again, I have 5-6 of those, and 1000 Acquaintances,
