Q: Is there a polite, non-offensive way to ask a customer service agent to transfer my call to a representative who does not have a foreign accent?
It has been my experience that I am often frustrated or angry with whatever circumstance has caused me to call a customer service department. I become even more upset when the representative does not understand the details of my complaint. There are so many Americanized phrases and terms that we use that may not be literally translated, which causes unavoidable confusion in the conversation.
I completely understand that it is not the representative’s fault. She deserves to be commended for being able to speak another language so fluently; I certainly cannot! However, when I am anxious to have an unpleasant situation resolved, I would simply appreciate not having a language barrier.
I don’t want to offend the person on the other end of the phone. What do you suggest?
A: STEVE SMITH RUN INTO ALL TIME, BUT OTHER WAY AROUND. STEVE SMITH TALK GOOD, BUT GET “AM I SPEAKING TO A GORILLA WITH A MOUTH FULL OF MARBLES?” “WHAT IS WITH ALL THE GRUNTING?”
STEVE SMITH THINK YOU JUST NEED LISTEN HARDER. TALK LOUD, SPEAK SLOW. THAT WORK!
Q: I showed an acquaintance a photo of me that was taken nine years ago. The photo is of me, in a beautiful ball gown. His response? “That doesn’t look like you at all.”
It was irritating at least, humiliating at worst. What do I say if I get this rude comment again?
A: SAY “THAT FUNNY, GO TELL FRIEND STEVE SMITH!” STEVE SMITH HIT ON HEAD WITH BIG ROCK. THEN RAPE. OF COURSE.

Look if I post a most recent picture you’d think I was a bum. If I post an old picture you’d think I was 20. I don’t have pictures of myself!
Look, they closed the barbers shops. I can’t see to cut my own hair. Of course I look like a bum.
Yeah ask my mom, or my ex. They have bunches of pictures of me, I don’t take any.

Yep. Me and the family are well.

What doctor are you seeing? Find a new one.
Wait, Alligators can live for more than eighty years?
Some types of reptiles have very long lifespans, maybe because of the slower metabolism.
I wasn’t expecting gators to be in that category.
Gators aren’t “big lizards”. Gators and crocs are archesaurs (sp?) and include bird features such as gizzard and sclerotic ring around the eye.
Alligators and crocodiles are unchanged for eons.
“Archosaurs.” They also have a four-chambered heart. Crocodiles and alligators are genetically more closely related to birds (dinosaurs) than to snakes and lizards.
And while they’ve been very similar for millions of years, they haven’t been completely unchanged; but they haven’t changed much since the late Triassic, when there were crocodile relatives running around on land on long legs – imaging a Nile croc that could run you down on land.
Apparently, someone’s been missing out on Swamp People episodes…
What’s that?
::Cajun sigh:: https://www.history.com/shows/swamp-people
I’m always pleasantly surprised on those rare occasions when the History Channel actually shows programs about history.
Those creatures are both impressive and terrifying.
The first half of Trump’s daily briefing was focused on the war on drugs. Increasing spending on our war on drugs will decrease funding to terrorists and lower the spread of the virus. So they want to ramp up the war on drugs, war on terror, and this will also help the war on the virus. Looks like we have our wartime president back.
That struck me as so odd. I mean, they framed it as the cartels expect us to be busy with the Kung Flu. And that seems plausible, but it was still weird.
What kind of deranged logic do you have to use in order to make the leap from “Terrorists fund operations selling drugs” to “In order to stop this we should ramp up the war on drugs” when the whole reason terrorists fund their operations using drug sales is that the war on drugs makes it profitable and gives an advantage to violent groups? And I do not even get the link to the virus, that is simple nonsense.
I didn’t get the link either.
Everything about this entire situation has struck me as odd. But I watched the daily briefing too, and that was just one more data point in a string of “what the fuck is everyone thinking” I keep seeing everywhere.

But you keep ignoring me.
Sounds legit. I’m coming around to believing.
That nasty little suspicion we all have at times, the one that tells you that everything is staged as a cosmic joke aimed at you, is actually correct?
I haven’t gone far enough to think it’s directed at me personally, yet, but if there are gods, I’m leaning towards calling them assholes.
Are you there, God? It’s me, Margaret. You’re a fucking asshole!
Aww, won’t allow an image? KXCD is there for us.

I don’t know how many times I danced to that song back in the day.
Shit bro they still play it at the gothic/industrial club in Dallas. I’ve danced to it a few times within the last year.
LOL I don’t even know if that scene still exists around here; I stopped following it about a decade ago.
It’s just a “few times a year” thing for us anymore. Too old to be out partying like that, and the crowd gets younger and younger every year…
We had our wedding reception there a long time ago, though : )
I remember dancing to VNV Nation and Funkervogt at my best friend’s wedding reception. Jeez, that was more than ten years ago…. WTF.
I, too, have entered the terminal stage of human existence where entire decades seem to blink by.
Goj–if you’re still around, I gotta know which club. Possible I’ve been there, presuming it’s been around long enough.
Dogby,Digby, I assume hes talking about the church/lizard lounge. It’s pretty much the only Goth club still around.
Is it? I’ve been, back in the early 90’s. Didn’t know it was still a thing, but, makes sense.
TY.
/”Dogby”?? Heh…
I forgot to delete the autocorrect, heh.
Yeah still going on, pretty cool actually. All the punk clubs from the same era are gone. :/
Huh….outstanding, then! Since you’re Metroplexual*, here’s hoping you can make the proposed glibs-up this Summer.
*I’m already sorry for writing that, and I haven’t even finished.
Yes, maybe instead of first encouraging NYers to go about their business, and then locking everyone in their homes after it got bad, they should have started a campaign to wear masks in public to reduce the spread, and still let people go on about their business – which would recognize that the vast majority of people simply can’t perform their jobs from home, but still attempt to protect the public. I’m so damn mad at the CDC right now.
A large part of the campaign has centered around telling people they don’t need masks unless they’re sick.
Not that it matters; they’re not available anywhere anyway.
It was transparent nonsense. When there’s any kind of virus going around, it’s just common sense to cover your nose and mouth when you go out – especially in crowds. They could have asked people to fashion their own in order to save the high grade items for healthcare professionals, and preserved more credibility, while also possibly keeping people from panic-buying the available supply.
I wish I followed that common sense. I think I asked here and was told they wouldn’t work.
I was arguing with my mother about it a month ago. She (and everyone else in my family except one) is fully in favor of locking the country down – of course, all of us can work remote, so it doesn’t impact *us*, but save for one of my sisters, the rest are oblivious to how badly we’re hurting everyone else.
We gave the world order!

That’s not how entropy works.
To be fair, libertarians do believe in emergent order… Maybe Gaia is a Glib?
This is how entropy works.
Entropy
That’s why I’m not a conservative. And clearly this guy has never heard of entropy or the Second law of thermodynamics.
That’s the fundamental problem with conservatism… On one side of the conservative spectrum, you have people a step or two short of being libertarian. On the other side of the spectrum, you have people whose only characteristic distinguishing them from progs is that they love Jesus. It makes conservatism a bipolar movement, especially since most people sit in the middle of the spectrum and end up with a philosophically incoherent set of views.
OT, but I was balancing my checkbook today, and noticed that the interest rate on my checking account and on my CDs both went down. The checking account wasn’t so bad, since it started at a princely 0.05% a year, but the CDs went down by 85% from a little under 2% to a quarter percent.
I’m afraid to look at my mutual fund and how little the money market settlement account there is getting now.
Well it is outperforming everything else by 40%…
Wait, people still balance checkbooks?
I only write one check a month, but I make any number of payments electronically and have my paycheck coming in. That all has to be reconciled.
It does?
If you don’t pay attention to the details of the account, anomalies will be missed to your detriment.
This.
I still balance my checkbook.
I’m not FedGov. I can’t just print money to make the balance look higher.
Yep. The Feds don’t like competition.
LOL. You’re so cute.
The funny thing is that I do the reconciliation every two weeks when I get my paycheck, using the credit union’s website to check transactions. So when I get the monthly statement, it’s well out of date.
I’m not even trying to be snarky. I’m old enough to have actually balanced check books. I just haven’t done it in years.
I just look at the account online to make sure it all looks legit.
I handwrite *very* few paper checks anymore. I think the last one was for a pistol…
I look online, and write everything down, checking the receipts.
Of course, I’ve got huge piles of receipts that I probably don’t need since I don’t itemize my taxes….
Ditto. I get an email every day with any debits and my balance but I have been fortunate enough to just kind of ignore it.
Not any more.
Every fucking month.

Question for those wise in the domestic ways. I’m trying to clean floor tile grout and all of the traditional methods aren’t working. Dedicated grout cleaner doesn’t do anything, baking soda/peroxide paste didn’t work. Vinegar didn’t work. CLR didn’t work. Anything else to try short of regrouting?
Are you sure that’s not just the color of the grout?
The thought crossed my mind, but there are spots in the corners where it’s much lighter.
aaahh, commercial grout cleaning machines are rotary brushes on a long handled stand up machine thing. If you want to go all crazy, I would get a softish to stiffish synthetic brush thing that you could chuck up in a hand held drill. Let your cleaning solution sit and then go at it on you hands and knees. Me, I would ignore it.
This is a good question. What color of the grout against the walls and non traffic areas?
This stuff:

Winner winner chicken dinner! I didn’t know whether such a thing existed, but I’m all for dying it.
Try a little clorox in a spray bottle. Mine is the same as yours, lighter around th edges where there is less foot traffic. I think its dirt/mold from wet shoes, mopping, etc. Forget about it, more important things to worry about.
Just paint the whole floor electric blue.
At the very least some shade of Computer Blue

Well, yeah. Cause it’s awesome. Haven’t listened to that album in over a year maybe. Thanks for the reminder.
Good idea!

TSP?
I did all this (vinegar/peroxide/baking soda) recently when we purchased a getaway. Clorox cleaner + bleach is your friend here along with either a toothbrush or grout brush (better).

Nah, I’m good. I’m not mad at sharks. I mean, if a shark rolled up in my living room unannounced I’d have some very pointed questions I daresay. I’m just saying I’m not interested in petting them or hanging out in their space and I expect them to return the favor.

We’re immersed in cool things to look at all the time. Maybe don’t show people photos of you from a decade ago. Maybe show them cool shark videos, or Q links.
10 years ago is when I started getting fat so I am fucked either way. 20 years ago? Different story.

Here I was, laboring under the misapprehension that Tinder was for meeting partners for temporally restricted relationships. But Noooo… It’s all “No hookups” this, and “Looking for LTR; if you’re not, swipe left that”. And everyone else is an Instagram camera whore, or a real whore.

(hah!)
Online dating is a wasteland. I had a few dates through Coffee Meets Bagel, but nothing that went anywhere. The most I’ve gotten through Tinder is I’ll propose a time and a place to meet, and then the woman disappears. Same with my latest try of OKCupid. I’m not sure why I bother anymore.
Of course, I’m probably breaking one of: “Be Attractive, Don’t Be Unattractive.”
I have a friend that echoed a similar sentiment and then met a great gal on eharmony or some such. They dated for a year gay engaged and will get married as soon as the travel bans are lifted. His take is that it’s a wasteland but you only need to find that one.
I am sorry about your situation; you are in a tough spot. If you are looking for a short-term situation, unfortunately, you will probably only get the type of person who is short-term wired. And that sucks when you just want a little bit of joy in your life.
Dude, if you just wanna get laid, hire somebody. Scrape together a little cash, get it done.
/not even joking
How many prozzies are actually good actresses, though? If you want to feel like you made a connection with someone that isn’t quite bf/gf level, professionals would necessarily bring that to the table.
Maybe, I guess…? Seems unlikely. Plus, seems like it’s easier to dismiss the thought of ‘paying’ for it when it’s done through buying dinner.
Connection? He’s looking for a short-term fling and all they want are long-term relationships.
l0b0t, ask Tres about his Craigslist ads. He’s gotten very lucky with them and has even gotten a short-term relationship or two out of them.
What can I say? I was being a romantic.
Don’t do online dating. It sucks. Do a group ballroom dance class instead.

I did it online. It was super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
Lol

Heh, heh. Nice one.
Haha!
Utterly fantastic.
Well that’s because he’s not used to seeing you that way, Jake from State Farm.
I took my temperature about and hour ago and it was 99.7. Enough to make the fever warning go off. I’m usually below the 98.6. 97 and change in the morning and a bit over 98 in the afternoon. I took it again and it was 99.1
So I’m concerned I might have the virus. Other than the temperature I’ve only had a bit of a sore throat the last few days and maybe a bit of a runny nose. But there have been many reports of people testing positive with no symptoms or mild symptoms.
The thing is I have to take care if my mom who is in a very high risk group. So I don’t know what to do?
Shit. That last part is where I don’t have any advice. Is there anyone else who can take over until you’re sure?
Not that I can think of.
Start by wearing a mask of some sort and making her wear one around you too, then try to get tested and confirm. And best of luck and hope you have the very mildest of cases, if you do have it.
All I have are nuisance dust masks, so I’ll go get one for myself. I already did everything I need for for tonight.
Make one from some cheap sheets/pillow cases and some sort of filler/lining in the middle like fabric backing or a few layers of paper towels or something. The major goal is to keep your snot and spit particles out of other peoples’ mouths and noses, and vice versa; you’re not trying to filter out sarin gas. No, it’s not effective as professional grade masks, but it’s absolutely more effective than nothing.
I really really hope it’s just allergies, or maybe a reaction to being stuck indoors for you, and wish you the best.
I really wish I wore a mask the last time I went out. I feel stupid now.
Unless you’re in a really impacted area, until you’re tested and confirmed, the odds are still in your favor, and in your mother’s, unless you were in the habit of kissing her on the mouth or something. Don’t beat yourself up or borrow trouble until trouble bothers you. Just do what you can to stay safe and get tested so you’ll know.
Call your doc. Explain the situation. If you can get tested, it will at least make you feel better.
Do you have backup for mom?
Unfortunately, no. I will call my doc in the morning. I don’t think I could get a hold of anyone now.
I wondering if I should even say anything to my mom now. I don’t want to upset her unnecessarily.
If you belong to a church, call your pastor. They may know where you can get help for mom.
You can also call adult protective services and ask if they have referrals.
Check your local county health department or state equivalent and call them after you call the doc’s office tomorrow.
If you decided to take your temp, then clearly you dont feel ok.
I blame Demi Rose.
You need more Ashley Graham- https://www.instagram.com/p/B7H4lQ6n-TN/
Seriously, even if you dont have the virus, act like you do, and take reasonable precautions
I’ve been trying to keep as much distance I can from her, only going out when necessary, constantly washing my hands, etc.
I don’t have any advice beyond find a backup for taking care of your mom and taking precautions like be careful what you touch, your mom touches, sneeze/cough into the crook of your arm, etc.
I hope you get well soon and things go OK with your mom.
Wow, CP. I have no better advice than the others gave. I just am really hoping for the best for both of you. You’re a good son.
Ya, what Mike said. And add maybe call the hospice people. They may be able to cover for you on mom duty or know people who can.
I don’t have any advice; I can only commiserate. I’m a single dad taking care of a kid and my mom. My mom has COPD and asthma. I have moderate asthma too. SARS 2 could orphan my daughter.
I’ve had a scratchy throat and tight lungs for the past 2 to 3 days now with fatigue. No fever, so I’m guessing it’s allergies. But your fears get away from you and I keep thinking in the back of my mind that this could br the start.
Every time I wake up with a mild hangover, I find myself worrying if I’ve caught it, but then I remember I just drank too much the night before because I was so pissed over the whole situation.
Rinse. Repeat.
I’m sorry to hear that. I’m really hoping all this will be like a bad dream by May.
Sorry. I hope it’s just allergies.
My moderate asthma is enough to make me nervous. I can’t imagine how you feel with our mom being high risk. Hang in there and stay healthy.
Thanks, HM.
It’s difficult for me to sort fear and worry from rational concern.
All I can say is: Act. Definitely make calls. Any other family members/relatives you can at least talk to about what’s happening? You don’t need to shoulder the worst case scenario by yourself. Hope everything turns out for the best, CP.
I’ll definitely be making calls in the morning.
Good. If you are able to, join Neph’s Zoom call on Friday. Hearing human voices and getting some advice that way may help.
CP–if you area is big enough, there may be something akin to https://www.agingcare.com/local/community-council-of-greater-dallas-dallas-area-agency-on-aging-tx
That cold be a good resource for finding somebody to assist. If you can pay out-of-pocket, you could also see about doing a home healthcare worker on a temp basis (or, see if there are any type of benefits at play for her/you, like Medicare or employee assistance programs).

People lucky enough to be working now should feel lucky! But some don’t.
This annoys me.
Wait a year. If we really end up in a depression I think a lot of the entitlement attitude will start to wear away.
There seems to be a large contingent of people who are utterly oblivious to the damage we’re doing, and grateful to have lost their freedom of assembly. These are the same people who don’t understand why not everyone would be thrilled to do ‘distance learning’ for their young children while also trying to keep working. I’m lucky to still have my job, but part of it over the past week has been focused on collecting stories of all the people who have been fucked over by the lockdowns, and reading everyone else’s situation is making me so angry.

I got some locally distilled hand sanitizer today. No more wasting time washing hands for me!
Artisinal hand sanitizer?
Haha. Sorta

At least Wendy missed going through this shit. Party on.
I thought the same thing, sad kind of…

Great goodness, I’m watching a YouTuber that’s commenting on a Morning Joe video they’re so alarmist they’re making me nervous. If this is the way the MSM is handling this virus coverage it’s no wonder people are losing their shit.

Costco was madness today. The poor employees. Target was OK. Haven’t been to Wmt in a while. I think you have to know someone at TJ’s to get in there.
WalMart is pretty chill, well stocked, and no panic BS……
I went to Costco a month ago and it was a preview of what was to come. 80% of the meat section was gone and all of the eggs and tp. It was eerie. I don’t think I’m gonna go back anytime soon, even though I have three kids that eat non stop. I’ve been going to the local produce place and living off the meat stockpile. It’s dwindling tho…
I keep hearing Costco is a nightmare. I don’t shop there; my local markets are perfectly sane. It’s almost as if it’s the clientele each store attracts.
I basically split our food shopping up between three places, Costco once every 6 weeks for bulk meat, booze and dry goods, the local produce mart weekly, and Safeway to fill in the gaps. The produce place is fine, but Costco and Safeway I am avoiding.

What price should the CCP pay for starting this fucking mess? I want my reparations.
20 bats should about cover it.
That is the Thai currency. China uses the Yuan.
very nice!
Planning to invade? Cause short of invading you can’t really collect from a soveign nation.
Well, why couldn’t we try a sternly worded letter?
We could do to China what we did to France circa 1780 and declare our debt cancled.
Who owns that debt though? Is it mostly Chinese banks/government or individuals?
I think they should pay a serious price for their fuckup and coverup but would it be realistic to cancel that debt?
Cancelling the debt is not a good plan. Our
wastepaperfiat currency is propped up by the fact that the US is regarded as the safest store of wealth on Earth. That support depends on the strength of our economy, the strength of our military, and the world’s belief that we will not repudiate our debts. Kick out that last leg and who knows what happens. The Bandaid needs to be ripped off sometime. Only Trump could go to China and do it.
The $6T (?) the US just printed makes that least leg look pretty wobbly already.
“Look, China. We have reason to believe you were making a bioweapon and it got loose. We’re not canceling our debt because we can’t pay you. We’re canceling it to punish you.”
With Iran in the 70’s I believe we took bank accounts and investments. It’s really an honest question, I don’t exactly know the answer, but it seems like they need to pay a price for what they did. I’d also like an apology.
From what I understand, we borrow from their government.. And China isn’t even whom we borrow the most from. That would be Japan.
That was my thought too. I don’t know how easy it is to transfer treasuries under the table, though.
Don’t you just strap it to a pallet?
/Iran
Where do the Chinese get their oil? It would be a real shame if something happened to it.
$6T would be a nice start.

Will this not lead to cattle rustlin, horse thieven, and stagecoach robbin’?
We have 95% of people doing that already. Some people are making artistic ones. Surprised I haven’t seen a Bain one yet.
I’ve seen a lot of photos of homemade ones online. Cutout milk jugs, plastic clamshell deli containers, takeout food plates, etc…
You should have bought a six shooter so you could open carry in a western style holster while you walk around with bandana over your face.
Open carry in the New 20’s is still pretty damned awesome with semi-autos.
New 20’s?
I had a project in central Idaho and seeing an older gentleman walking around open carrying is 1911 warmed my heart.
Eh, I was trying to riff/coin a phrase…I got nuthin’, really.
Was eating at a Mongolian grill spot with a friend last year, and saw a slightly-older-than-college-age guy walk in OCing. We were both delighted to see someone doing so, regardless of the potential down-sides.
It makes me feel safe. I like visiting AZ.
No AZ experience on my side of things, but, I agree with the sentiment. As for me, I’m steadily getting used to a belly band holster. It’s…interesting.
You all have probably thought about this much more than I, but let me give it a shot. We are getting screwed right now because information has been totally corrupted by the behemoth living in DC. This huge pile of looted treasure sitting there warps the integrity of our journalists as they become more and more beholden to team A or team B. You may get one part of story that is based in reality, but the rest of it is pure spin. Do this over decades and part of the public becomes disgusted with the media and disbelieves everything and another part of the public swallows the corporate/party line being put out by one of the teams.
My point is this: If we had a decent portion of the media providing reliable and reality based information, we’d have a shot at avoiding the heavy-handed tactics the government is using now. The outbreak in Wuhan would’ve been covered by some in the media and people could’ve self organized to prevent/mitigate the worst of the virus. IOW, we needed to know the severity of the danger in order to prepare for it. Even if the virus hit a community, you could punish irresponsible behavior and not violate rights. You go to a giant beach party? Businesses, landlords, etc say, “We will remember who you are and will not do any business with you when it’s over. No job from me. No renting from me” etc. Even if there are problems with this model, there are bigger problems with the current system IMO. But all of this depends on information being relatively untainted from the pile of shit in DC. Oh, and of course, you’d need to have the right to freely associate. Don’t have either now.
If businesses won’t stop doing commerce with Westboro Satanic Baptist Church and its members, why do you think they are going to remember and shun some unknown folks who go to a beach party?
I’m talking about how Ancapistan would deal with this.
It’s not just the media, but our own government that has completely fallen down on the job. The CDC lied to us about masks in a transparently self-serving attempt to preserve them for healthcare professionals, instead of being honest and about supply chains and asking us to be patriotic and make our own. Of all the major publications I see, very few make any attempt to put the current pandemic into context of other outbreaks, or to keep the number of people across the US who die each day in mind as perspective. Saw an editor for the site I work for out of Boston announce they’d had their first death, and I’m like “Dude, you mean first coronavirus death, because I am *positive* that more than one person has died in an entire month in the city of Boston.” … but I’m laying low, so I didn’t actually tell him that. Maybe if I had a little more alcohol in me, I would.
“The CDC lied to us about masks in a transparently self-serving attempt to preserve them for healthcare professionals, instead of being honest and about supply chains and asking us to be patriotic and make our own.”
I saw your comment above, but I’m still regretting not wearing one. I should have known better.
I read an article today, not sure if I can still find it, by a doctor who has apparently been on the front lines of this thing since the start. He said the best thing you can do is wash your hands often and don’t touch your face. He said it mostly spreads in exactly that way, not by people sneezing or coughing on other people.
Have yourself a strong gin and tonic, and start cutting up a pillowcase. This is also a season where lots of people catch other shit, too, so don’t give in to moo goo gai panic until you’ve been tested positive. There are too few libertarians left, and the powers that be already pulled their biggest joke on us, by making the epicenter of coronavirus, Corona, NY. I’m going to stay positive on your behalf.
“This is also a season where lots of people catch other shit, too”
Yep, allergy season too.
My wife and I were both sick just a couple of weeks ago with cold/flu like symptoms. We both got better. Was it a cold, flu, the virus? We’ll never know and I suspect the vast majority who get the virus will never know. Until we can walk in a pharmacy and buy a quick test or receive one through the mail, most people will go undiagnosed.
Luckily I still had an old sheet and masking tape nearby from when I just renovated my bathroom. So I was able to make one before I had to talk to mom.
There are ways if you can’t buy one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJKlivfBT7g
Don’t beat yourself up, the real value of mask wearing is not spreading it to other people with a much much lesser incidental protection from acquiring it (and balanced against some downsides of mask wearing). It’s the rest of us, including myself, that should be wearing one but are chickenshit about looking like a doofus when hardly anyone else is.
You’re never going to have an unbiased press. Past generations knew this and accepted this. However, they also had a much better education in rhetoric than the average person has now.
No one is unbiased. Yes, that includes me and everyone here. I don’t know that the overall standard of education in rhetoric was actually higher, but the standard among the minorityof the population that was educated was significantly higher. We have expanded the portion of the population that is educated but have simultaneously (in part as a result, but I think only in part) lowered the standard of that education.
There’s bias and then there’s insane bias. I don’t need Spock writing columns for the Post.
At the time, the franchise was limited to that minority, so they were the only ones you had to worry about.
That was the theory anyway. In practice the limitations on the franchise didn’t map directly onto education, witness Andrew Jackson.
You and LemonG are right. I don’t need an entirely unbiased press. Just one part of the media that is keep in check by principle. Government abetted by the press is the problem. Trying to work through how it may possibly be handled by a society that respects the NAP. I’m no Walter Block, though.
I’m rereading the Newsflesh series by Mira Grant (Feed, Deadline, Blackout) and while the similarities to our current situation are awfully eerie, what I always liked about it is that our heroes are intrepid bloggers in a new media world that has everyone register their political biases openly, so you know where they’re coming from. Wish our own media would admit it, since even in the newsroom I’m in now, most say they’re ‘independent’ but have never voted for anyone who wasn’t a Democrat.
The media have done very little actual news, reporting, journalism, whatever you want to call it, for a very long time. It’s all opinion and spin, based mostly on politics to keep the people constantly agitated. They really kicked that into high gear after then 2016 election. And really they haven’t let up for a minute since. No surprise they’re still doing it using the pandemic as their latest prop. Almost every NYT, Atlantic, and CNN article are just different versions of ‘You’re all gonna die because bad orange man!’. When this is over, they’ll go right on to the next thing.
It’s because their business model changed. Actual news, reporting, journalism, whatever you want to call it, costs money. Getting talking heads not only costs less, focusing mostly on politics to keep the people constantly agitated drives ratings.
Click Bait. Like you said, ratings. People want sensationalism, they’re sure getting it. They’re also biased politically to the point of being the democratic party’s version of Pravda.
I don’t mainly blame the media. They are what happens when there is so much money in DC.
NOVA is the only place I have ever been in my entire life where restaurants and malls are full of people at 10pm on week days. I guess not anymore.
Sometimes I just feel like I want to take all my saved up vacation time and go on a massive binge, and see what’s left of the world when I finally sober up. Thing is, alcohol just dehydrates me really badly and disrupts my sleep these days. I could have easily done that 10 years go, but not anymore. Bummer.
Problem is you can’t even really go many places right now. I just talked to my friend that went to Nepal for a couple weeks and got back several days ago, She and her husband caught the last flight out. They were closing down the country, she said there was a line of vehicles exiting Kathmandu to go back to the countryside. All the schools there closed.
My wife cancelled her flight to Brazil in March because of this. I guess she could still get back since she’s a US citizen, but she didn’t want to take the risk because no one knows right now what will happen. Now she’s stuck with me 24/7 and I can’t even go the office. I feel bad for her, she’s probably the one who needs to go on a binge, but she doesn’t drink much, never has. She might want to start now.
We’ve had to cancel a number of plans, it fucking sucks, everyone has. I was coaching this year again, this time for middle kid’s team, and we only got our first two practices. First game and it looks like the season cancelled. I’ve been helping secure a couple businesses that I am sure will end up folding now, for no fault of their own.
We were going to go on a cruise starting next weekend. Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and back to Oahu. Today the governor made a 14 day mandatory quarantine for any interisland trip. 14 days wheb you arrive and then 14 more when you return. That killed our trip which would be near the ultimate in social distancing this side of the ISS.
Hawaii is now the most KL like place in America. 14 days to enter the state (unless you are air crew) and now you can’t travel to another county, or in two counties you can’t travel intra county w/o a quarantine.
Alright. I offered one possible alternative to what the government is doing. Problems with it? Sure. Jarflax offered one the other day. I’m not seeing much else though. If we don’t offer solutions, then we will go to our own bias which is to down play the seriousness of the outbreak. So, c’mon boys, throw me some ideas. (Sorry if this had already been done on another post).
Open the country back up. Advise people on common sense practices, but do not close businesses or restrict domestic travel. They’re going to kill far more people through depression, drug abuse, suicide etc, than the virus ever will.
That’s my solution.
That’s a start. And if the virus turns out to be better at spreading than you thought? What number of deaths from the virus is acceptable? I’m not doing a gotcha question here because I’m doing that calculation myself.
“What number of deaths from the virus is acceptable? ”
None are acceptable. But destroying businesses and people’s jobs is probably going to be worse. That’s what I’m basing it on. I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.
“None” are acceptable? How do you figure?
Death happens every day. Is every death unacceptable?
I’m no good at being a top man in a country of 350m. Let’s say you have a community of 10K. Mortality rate turns out to be around 2% despite your best social/behavior changes. So, around 200 people. How about that? Go on with the strategy while trying to find a cure and treatment or insist on harsher measures?
“None are acceptable” is just not possible. (not picking on you)
We have been able to keep people alive with serious health issues for longer than is “natural” (not arguing against it)
A problem is that most people look at the numbers without considering percentages. So big numbers will always be scary even if they are still a small percentage of the population.
Acceptable is an average yearly death rate plus the death rate during a normal flu season. You’ve accounted for the flu season twice, yes, but that’s acceptable.
Or measure in an average-of-pandemic terms:
x% of the population that died during the Bubonic plague +
y% of the population that died during the Spanish flu +
z% of the population that died during the [insert pandemic of your choice here] =
xyz% / 3 (or however many plagues you used.
That percent.
Those were cullings of the herd. This is not.
What is going to cull THIS herd are the authoritarian jackbooted thugs who start killing people for wandering out of their houses, people starving, and heaven help us if we have a drought.
What is going to cull THIS herd are the authoritarian jackbooted thugs who start killing people for wandering out of their houses, people starving, and heaven help us if we have a drought
You guys do realize that I’m in the choir that you’re preaching to, don’t you?
I do
Well, of course. *I* am just venting.
After my back-of-the-envelope math, I mean.
Didn’t want to use up the good stock, eh?
j/k!
Nah, bruh. I save my good stationery for SERIOUS math.
?âś’?
Vent away.
That was my thought.
Ask me again in a couple weeks.
How many deaths are acceptable from the flu, or AIDS or other communicable diseases? We tolerate tens of thousands of flu deaths every year without abandoning the constitution or shutting down the country to prevent the spread. We’re still sitting at fewer deaths over the course of an entire month across the US than die on average per day. The whole response has been so outlandishly severe, to me, that it’s making me more receptive to conspiracy theories.
Go Ancap not tinfoil cap.
“How many deaths are acceptable from the flu”
What about from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, car accidents? None of them are acceptable, which is why we spend so much effort trying to prevent them. Just because you can’t prevent all of them doesn’t make any of them acceptable.
A few thousand years ago, people typically didn’t live for 3 decades. So why do we try to make people live to 80 now, when it’s ‘acceptable’ that they die at 30?
I hate that way of thinking. You have people saying stuff like ‘Oh, people shouldn’t live any longer, it’s not natural’. Well, OK then, when the doctor gives you 3 month to live, don’t have that life extending surgery, because it’s acceptable if you just die.
No, it’s not ‘acceptable’ that anyone dies if you can prevent it.
But you have to weigh the alternative. Going back to the cure being worse than the disease here.
My dad is 91. If someone says to me ‘hey, your dad lived a long time, ok with you if he dies now?’. It’s acceptable. I’m not going to take that very well.
It’s acceptable to Ezekiel Emanuel if everyone dies at 75, because he’s an insufferable cunt.
The consequences of the absence of death are unacceptable.
“No death is acceptable” is the thinking that gets us draconian laws because it might save one child.
Death is PART of life. Everything dies. Everything MUST die, because to not do so would be catastrophic.
“Death is PART of life.”
No, it isn’t. When you’re dead, life has ended. At least this life. Death is the exact opposite of life.
I’m feeling you on that Mo. Our culture removes us from the reality of death in every way possible way it seems to me.
1. It is part of life in that it will happen to you as part of your life.
2. You’re dead. For a whole lot of other things, you’re food.
Yes, death is most definitely part of life.
Endings are a part of the whole. Plus, if death is a ‘state’ of something, you start getting into really intense philosophical debates that take us pretty far off-course wrt the current problem.
Not saying it’s not worth the thoughts or talk, just that the question(s) at hand probably won’t get answered if get bogged down in the more existential aspects.
KSue, yes, and it’s sad. No, we shouldn’t be burying pioneers in the frozen snow all the way across the plains but we also need to accept death as it is.
I will admit that my deep faith in a cushy afterlife that makes my thinking a luxury, you know, where your family and friends are going to catch up with you, and it will be potlucks forever with funeral potatoes. But there has to be a point when a responsible adult says, “I am going to die” and makes peace with it.
Part of my thinking also goes back to my grandfather who refused to talk about death at all as if would never happen, even so far as to not buy life insirance, and left my grandmother and disabled aunt with nothing. Because he was so afraid of death, he would not acknowledge it.
Diggy, this site exists to ponder and debate the metaphysical and philosophical. Also, it’s after midnight, when people share the gift of gab between themselves.
Tolerate and acceptable are probably the wrong words here. The question is at what cost do we draw the line in prevnting those deaths. The price of a shutdown is massive economically which in turn costs lives, and reduces the quality of lives. More importantly, and more absolutely, accepting the shutdown is accepting that rights are not in fact rights, but simply nice things that we would like to have but which can be shelved when ‘necessary’. I admit I struggle with this, because it does seem that some infringements could be called for in a severe enough disease situation.
Banning travel from an infected country might be called for, although it is questionable whether it is ever possible to do it early enough. Quarantining the sick also may be called for in some situations. A general lock down is basically impossible even if called for because in a very short period it will lead to massive deaths. The quasi lock down we are experiencing simply cannot stop the spread of a disease because everyone still has contact with others, just at a reduced rate (yeah I know it isn’t to quarantine, it is to flatten blah blah). How do we decide? Who gets to make the decision?
In this case I think it is fairly clear that the disease does not really call for the level of infringement we are seeing, but what if someone actually does release a biological weapon? Something really nasty with a slow incubation with asymptomatic transmission, and a really high mortality, say north of 10%. If the disease was actually scary would people voluntarily lock down? Could they? I know we have some prepper types here and they will loudly proclaim how long they could stay hom, but they are the exception, and a real ‘stop the disease’ type lockdown would take months, and need to be effectively absolute. It seems to me that we no longer have that ability. Muscle and animal powered farmers could withdraw into their own places and ride out a plague, effectively no one in America today could really do that.
“The question is at what cost do we draw the line in prevnting those deaths.”
That’s much more well stated.
And I say the cost of shutting down our economy is going to be incalculably higher than the what the virus will cost us.
Quarantining the sick also may be called for in some situations.
Those vulnerable populations have the right not to be infected from reckless people. They could join organizations that would put strict standards on any facility that is housing them. They could go on with their lives in the greater community, but would have no recourse legally if they contracted the virus through casual contact. Handling vulnerable populations like children who have no power over their own lives and decisions is just as bad as what they are doing to the rest of us.
I’m not sure if you are agreeing with me or disagreeing. I’m not talking about quarantining the vulnerable for their protection. I am talking traditional quarantine, where if you have the disease in question, or are highly likely to have it (family members of the infected for example) , the rest of us make you stay home because you going out and about would be recklessly endangering others.
I’m not disagreeing or agreeing. I’m offering a solution that is compatible with the rights of vulnerable people. The key to all of this is how we define “reckless”. If that means buying a gallon of milk while wearing a mask, I’m not on board. If it means, limiting crowd sizes etc, OK. We are all gonna draw our line at “reckless” at a different spot.
Think about what you’re asking – how many deaths is your individual freedom worth? That’s really the question you’re asking. But people keep turning it on its head, as if your desire for individual freedom is now somehow subject to a vote if the republic is in an infectious disease situation. I have some news for everyone: we’ve been “at risk” of an infectious disease for all of human history. Thucydides writes at length about the plague at Athens in the second year of the Peloponnesian Wars.
There are plagues throughout human history. They’ve never. fucking. stopped. We finally achieved a point in human history where the sanctity of the individual was finally recognized, where individual freedom to worship, speak, move, commerce, own property, weapons, and be left the fuck alone was won by immeasurable hardship and sacrifice – and we’re pissing all over that – and being made to feel guilty by others if we dare to suggest that our own lives and livelihoods cannot be sacrificed on the altar for anyone else, that citizenship is not a yoke to be worn, but was purchased with blood for the exact opposite reason. We have always mitigated our risks as best we knew how in these situations, by taking precautions commensurate with our own individual risk profiles, which is true of everything: like not smoking as you fall asleep so you don’t burn your house and your neighbor’s house down. It still happens a fair amount, and people die, but we don’t ban smoking for all citizens “if it will save JUST ONE LIFE.”
We are not obligated to live our lives with the concern that our very presence, and ability to transact business to feed out families, must now be run through a calculus of “what if somewhere, someone who is at high risk might contact this disease…?” It’s insanity. No one can live this way. Society cannot function this way. It is not moral to suggest others do so.
Back to your question or my reframing: how many lives is Freedom worth? The Founders thought it was worth a lot. Lives, rapes by British soldiers, children killed, houses burned – if they had framed the question the way you did, they never would have fought for independence. Too costly. What if Freedom cost lives? It does. It always has.
I’m not suggesting anyone should be inconsiderate of the possibility of transmission, but we can take risk mitigating steps without starting from a point that says we are all each other’s keepers and no one can do anything without considering the worst case scenario. I’ll leave my rant here, but this is the thrust of the article that is posting next Tuesday. My apologies for jumping in and then leaving, but I’m going to bed. I’ll check back tomorrow if anyone wants to respond.
I’m asking the question in response to Hyperion’s solution and the reasons he gave. I’m an Ancap and am fully against violating rights even in times of crisis. Times of crisis are exactly when you need the rights that are inherently yours.
My apologies, straff-san. It’s tough to pick up intonation in black and white text. I think you and I probably agree on this subject.
I would asterisk the above now that we’ve gone down this garden path, is to ramp up serology testing to get a real idea of what we’re dealing with. And economists getting models out of the costs of this current path. Far too much doom and gloom going unchecked.
Assuming we’re able to go back in time to say, March 1st instead of today, my recommendation would have been for screening incoming travelers, encouraging vulnerable populations to isolate, and asking the rest of the population to wear masks in public. Oh, and not having moved critical manufacturing over to a communist government for all these years.
Let it Burn…
You’d have to go to middle/late January and quarantine all arriving passengers from China for ~14 days. Then have near current levels of diagnostic testing along with aggressive contact tracing. Basically a mixture of the Singapore/Taiwan/South Korea responses.
I would like to see an antibody test that could be upscaled quickly to test people, at home if possible. When millions got back a positive (like I suspect) they could at least more accurately model the death rate.
Me too. Let’s assume it can’t be done effectively or efficiently. What do you do?
We have been on shutdown here for 2.5 weeks now. I think they immediately need to lose this bullshit distinction of essential and non essential. Everything is essential to the person who owns it or works there. Keep pounding the cleanliness message, keep large gatherings still closed(stadium sized and such) and keep medium gathering to a minimum. Keep international flights to a minimum for a couple more weeks. Accept that all life is risk.
Yes. The essential/non-essential distinction is from those who think they can do surgical removal of certain parts of the economy without impacting the rest. Aka central planning. When really, if it was non-essential, it wouldn’t exist. Someone has a need/desire for it. And those in turn support or partially support “essential” businesses.
Some sectors, frankly, are fucked for the time being even without stay at home orders. Restaurants, hospitality industry, travel were all taking a hit before this. And some probably won’t come back for a long time like travel. This has been forcing businesses to do things like WFH or video conferencing on a scale they wouldn’t do before. If it works, some things probably won’t go back to the way they were. Even on a best case scenario, this was probably going to cause a recession or worse.
Every time I hear/see “central planning,” I think about the brain on Camazotz.
I was already planning to not go to several conferences before the orders came on down from high.
Me too. Did the same with a trade show and professional society training session in early March. Had already decided in February I’d be staying home and minimizing contact as precautionary measure for my own family. Wrapped up some out of town work and switched the last trip to far more expensive property so I could choose a room by a side entrance, check in via app, and avoid a breakfast buffet.
Is it possible to have a serious public discussion about this disease? I don’t mean some randos here but on a national level?
I would rather have the government be more honest and say “we don’t know everything but it appears to readily transmissible and here are some possible scenarios based on models.”
I’m afraid from what I am seeing is that there is just too much herd mentality and little room for nuance.
I don’t think so. Too much money and power in DC . But I repeat myself.
True, and no humility. I can’t see anyone in DC standing up and saying “We don’t know”
No, no, yes, yes.
“I would rather have the government be more honest and say “we don’t know everything but it appears to readily transmissible and here are some possible scenarios based on models.””
You mean like the Dr talking during Trump’s press conferences has been doing and she’s being smeared and attacked by the media for it because she’s dared to work with orange bad man?
Japan airports at immigration has IR cameras and gates that close if you have a fever. They then quarantine you until you get better or they can figure out what you have.
Also would like to see close monitoring of virus generating hotspots like China. The UN, US, EU, and ASEAN countries should put China on the hot seat over this to work together to quickly identify new viruses. If they withhold info, allow disinformation, and prevent early detection they should be sanctioned. This would encourage China to stop creating these crossover viruses in their markets.
That requires long term commitment and a long term memory from our rulers. When this passes and China starts throwing money at politicians and lobbyists, how do you stop the pols from going back on their promises? I like the idea, so I’m asking how you’d flesh it out.
This recession/depression won’t be forgotten as soon as most. There has to be consistent criticism and evaluation of how we got to where we are 6 months from now. Especially if we find out this is seasonal.
The 2008 recession is still being debated about who did what. This is clearly the virus. The virus clearly came from China. Most new strains of epidemic viruses come from there due to the lifestyle and environment present.
This also applies to the responses and models used to justify these shutdowns.
We have a great laboratory to study differences in responses and results. Sweden vs Finland. PA vs NY or WV. Even Philadelphia vs Boston.
Part of why this spread is that carriers can be contagious before elevated body temps or even never have a fever, unlike the first SARS. I do think the lack of any routine medical screening at US entry points, even if it didn’t catch everything, is frankly shocking.
That was my first point. Wha about future epidemics. This is a simple measure that costs far less than the BS screening systems used for checking your belt and shoes for firecrackers.
I’m firmly in the 9/11 threat ended on UA93 camp.
Another related point is perhaps a reexamination of Lean/JIT balanced against resiliency not just in supply chains, but other business processes.
The lies and coverup from China cannot be forgotten. From the jailing of doctors calling out a new virus to hiding the true numbers of infected and deaths, the world lost at least 2 months worth of information.
They’re still doing it. And parts of western media are wholly carrying water for them. Like the bullshit Wuhan/Chinese virus is racist nonsense.
I’m with you. Yea, no new cases. (eye roll)
I also note the almost complete news blackout on Taiwan which seems to be doing the best at handling the CCPV. The tale of two Chinas I guess.
And one of those isn’t a member of WHO….hmmm….
“I hear you’re a racist now, Father!”

Holy shnikeys STEVE, you just sent me down memory lane. The third incel down is at the Orcs Nest hobby shop in London, (although I swear it was in Bedford, but google says I’m wrong.). That was the place me and my brother first got Rogue Trader, the first sourcebook for Warhammer 40k. Also, bought my first few models there.
Oh, so you went “local” to get your 40K fix, eh?
I got your Scenery right here!
Fuck it. let ll burn,
/i’m tired
No. We got kids, Y-K. Unless you’re going with the “If it’s falling down, push it over” strategy. I’d mull that over.
I won’t help push it over, I’m more of a hold it up guy,
I saw lines at the Banks today, but no runs at Walmart, money is where it,s at right now, Cash is King,
this is not good,
My temperature is close to normal now, but still feel like crap. I should sleep.
My sincerest thanks to everyone for their thoughts.
Sleep tight, and I hope you feel absolutely fantastic tomorrow.
Hang in there man. It’s most likely something else, but even if not, you’ll survive it.
Good night. I would still press your doc tomorrow about getting tested, particularly given your living circumstances.
Just stay calm. Like I said, the way it is right now, it’s very easy to panic if you get the slightest of cold. Hope you feel better.
Most people i know feel as if they already got this CV bullshit back in December/ January, and already got over it, I am a Carrier but no one has got it from me,
Bull. Shit.
Yes, I’m sure I’m a Carrier, I was in Vegas early on, with the Wife, Tons of Chinese Students roaming about, I’m not Racist but , i am Exposed, Thanks CCP!
You Guys are the Fucking Best!
I’ll stay alive, you guys help me so much!

Right back at ya, Yusef!
I hear this place has washable fabric masks.
https://m.facebook.com/AlohaDesigns
I feel like a doofus in my dollar-store dust mask but for now it’s all I have. People seem to appreciate it actually.
better than nothing. I have some masks that are not medical, but they have 3 layers of cotton so I think they are good. I also have a 3M N100 mask
Well, so I went to check out the 72-hour kits I made years ago and never touched since and guess what I found?
Masks.
Cool. Yay LDS prep!
Right?! I knew held on for some reason. Now, if I can just keep holding on a leeeeettle longer …
My friends sister works in NYC hospital. She had her floor converted from a neurological floor to COViD treatment. She is given one mask per week that she has to reuse due to shortages or the potential shortages that are expected. Really strange.
I find it strange that all hospitals everywhere have this huge shortage. Have they no reserves? Is no country prepared for a potential epidemic? This is not, as some say, a black swan event.
The flu is not the black swan, but the reaction to it most assuredly is.
This.. Fuck the CCP!
Shameful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbRUTHGLu9s
/just attempting to add levity. Wish I could provide masks for you
‘Preciated.
You want me to send you some if I can find any?
Let me know what kind you need. The N95 masks are probably impossible, though.
Even painting respirator filters are out. (was just looking on McMaster Carr)
Ooooh Kaaaaaaay….https://www.theblaze.com/news/man-tries-to-ram-train-into-hospital-ship
A whole lot of nothing regarding what this guy’s conspiracy theory actually is. And, yes–I get that it’s naive to expect actual reporting on that; I’m just commenting on it.
250 yards away? LOL he almost made it, not.
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”
For some reason, diesel locomotives don’t seem to have very good off track capabilities.

We have and international board here. Time should be in Zulu.
Oh fuck Off! American Time only!
Hi Plinker. Did you feel the earthquake?
I didn’t notice it. I think some of my friends in the pan handle did.
I see your little game, Plink.
OH! Oh, ZuLU…gotcha.
Not Zulu Lulu?
That takes me back (to an album I never listened to).
Well, other than “All the Young Dudes”. But, that wasn’t my choice.
My favorite song from the album which I have on a cassette tape!
Born in 58
That is a great song! Thanks for that.
Going to Cerbat Cliffs to play a Big course tomorrow, Pay to play, Carts and everything, should be a Blast!

Conan is pretty much doing this: https://frinkiac.com/caption/S07E09/978510
What would we have done in the 20C? Watch Andy Griffith reruns, I guess.
I just get one frame–is it supposed to be a clip or gif?
Or, is it just a statement that Conan’s burning it all down?

Count Potato or Rhywun or whomever… I have a box of medical N-9 5 masks that expired in 2009 if you’re interested. They’re individually wrapped, and appear to be in good condition. I’d be happy to send a few your way if you need. My Seattle ER nurse sister doesn’t want them because they have plenty, and my xray tech gf doesn’t want them because they’re expired.
Much obliged but please don’t bother for me. I’ll find regular surgical masks eventually if I really feel the need.
Thanks!
PS. they expire?!
i understand the rubber band holding them on face can age and may break during use. Replace that and they are fine
Ya, apparently. You know, just like billion year old table salt.
The nursing school instructor brought a few boxes over to us a couple weeks ago because at the time we (the mechanics) and the custodians were the only ones still working. They only used them for training so they didn’t care about the expiration date.
For anyone needing an odd pick-me-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TMjKQ0JK6E
Creamy spinach fettuccine? That’s what they get now? I was partial to chicken with cavatelli myself.
It is, apparently, quite the unappetizing MRE. Or, at least the main course is. Just another reason why I couldn’t serve in any real capacity; I’d starve from avoiding all the shit I hate.
The simple truth is that there are only 3 MRE flavors. There’s 1: the chili mac family, the 2: ass-and cardboard family, i.e. the ratatouille or omlette, and 3: the in between vegetarian family, like the cheese tortellini.
I miss the dark brown MRE bags. Corned beef hash was good. Freeze dried strawberry
Fingers of death.
Ham slice.
Beef stew.

Pork with rice
Spaghetti
Pork chow Mein
Scalloped potato
Jap cheese.
Never cared much for heating them. Always thought they were better cold. Tear off the top strip on the long side and dig in.
The Brit 24 hour ration pack was the ultimate bomb. Too bad they screwed the pooch with that revamp.
Let’s take a look at what’s in the current mix…
https://www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/mre-menus-2019/
…what a load of horseshit.
Classic:
https://www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/mre-menus-1992/
These were the best
https://www.mreinfo.com/images/britishgp2.jpg
The oatmeal block, brown biscuits, and meat pate were heavenly. And the TP was better than the rice paper stuff in MRE. Made by Kleenex. Also came with a printed range card on the outer box.
How did/does that work; getting the MRE of other countries? Is there trade? Do you eat their meals when hosted in-country, or, doing joint operations and training?
Hosted in country. Did a unit exchange program basically. One company to the UK, one Brit coy to train in the high desert training center (*snicker*). Got issued Brit weapons, fed by their mess, etc. Really good time, but it was obvious that while well motivated, they just didn’t have the resources. We have MILES (laser tag) and they had…just fall down if you felt like it. Or the mess yelling at us collectively that we were eating too much and could only take XX amount at meals. Did trade for a bit of kit and uniforms at the end.
The Brit MRE’s were the best. We got their MRE’s occasionally when we hauled shit for them. I remember they had an “oxtail soup” packet that was the best thing ever.
George Carlin’s take on this: https://youtu.be/SivpLzwYSYE?t=268
Thank you, both, for your insight on these. Always was a mystery as to what’s good, what’s popular, etc. Diff’rent strokes, and all that.
Oh sure! That’s why trading meals and meal components is such a big thing.
::makes notes about future Gustave gifts::
steve became famous for his old MRE reviews, but I only watch to new ones myself.
I don’t remember which one was his favorite but I think Spanish was high…
Then again I aint been in the army
Fuck. TCM is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Back to the Future. Eff me now.
Oooooohhhh….yeah, 35. Damn.
SyFy and USA have been tag-teaming the entire Harry Potter oeuvre for two straight weeks now. I watched them all a couple weekends ago. Fuck me.
I caught just a bit of 1/2 Blood the other night. Didn’t realize it was a ‘thing’ going on right now.
I have never watched The Sopranos, so I figure now is the time.
Got through the pilot—barely. Should I stick with it, or is it as overrated as it seems??
That’s what stopped me – I made it some way into the second or third episode. My understanding from those who express incredulity at my having just stopped, is that it must take a while to really get going. Maybe have it on somewhere with subtitles while your cooking or doing laundry (or one of those other woman things! arf arf!) just to get caught up until the good stuff it’s woth settling down to watch.
It’s been a while since I watched but if I recall correctly the show didn’t really get rolling well into the first season and, yeah, the pilot wasn’t great. It’s worth the initial slog in my opinion but your mileage may vary.
It wanders but it is a really solid show. The acting is top-notch. Be prepared to hate everybody.
Speaking of TV shows to watch during The Current Crisis®, the Mr. and I were excited to realize last night that our DVR has been recording a new season of Brockmire. Last night was apparently the fourth new episode, so we have viewing for this evening, which is usually Must Suck TV night. (On IFC – Independent Film Channel on our cable. Don’t know if it’s available on any streaming services, but highly recommended if you can get it.)
We may not have real baseball, but we can keep it Brockmire!
Hey Glibbies! How’s tricks? Might not be able participate in the Happy Hour as my life has seemingly turned into the latest installment of The Hat and The Hair. Wifey says she feels “left out”. I don’t complain about her pursuits and even encourage them. She’s working half-time for the duration so she’s the Hat and I am the unwilling Hair.
Mornin’, Fes! Hope you can join in on Friday, but as you well know, the most important thing a man can do in his life is keep his wife happy! ; )
I’m just bitching. She’s usually so busy that she didn’t notice how much time that I actually spend here. Idle hands and all that.
Doesn’t help that we work opposite shifts so when she’s getting up, I’m eating my dinner and getting ready for bed.
I woke up cranky. Do I have the Kung Flu?
?
No.
Hmmm….more likely a case of hyposubservience – you haven’t sufficiently surrendered to the will of The State.
Awww. Somebodies got a case of the Thursdays! Hope it improves, Sean.
have a double scotch, If you can hold it down, you don’t
I’m out of scotch. ?
I have 6 bottles. Scotch is good.

It’s Lupus.
It’s never lupus, clearly he’s a leppo.
