Parque Fin

by | May 4, 2020 | Art, Fun | 320 comments

Welcome to Parque Fin, the last in a series.

I put this together over a not so good time in my life, a nice change of Scenery if you will, so a sunny day, with people at play, let’s take a look, as you know, I like kites.

My water pour was a disaster, so my perfect pond has ripples in it, but it still looks good, did I mention I like kites?

I think by now, you know my methods, and you can find details at my Contributor page as far as how I do this stuff, so let’s just look at the pretty pictures: Some bikes,

and some Barbecue,

I have a bad habit of looking for a certain thing, and then finding something I didn’t know I “need”, the Parque is no exception: a birthday party,

some picnickers,

I needed more people so I bought some generic Architecture people to fill things out, I couldn’t find Ducks for the pond, nor any Dog walkers, so it’s not perfect, But I would like to go visit, it’s nice place,

I made trashcans from straws and painted the inside black, like a trashbag, scoured my property for just the right sitting stones, this was a really fun project, but wait!

what about a Restroom?

Gotta go gotta gotta go right now...

Nice

I’m starting to recycle, people, trees and anything else of value, then unceremoniously tossing it in the trash, sad, there is no market for this specific work, and I don’t have room.

’til next time, I hope you enjoyed my little Parque!

Where are the cops enforcing social distancing?

    • Don Escaped Australians

      not at Walgreen’s

where some ancient huge grandma couldn’t get into her car (and the schlub in the driver’s seat was probably being paid to help her, but I didn’t see him before I had already asserted myself). Can I help you? Yes. Can I touch you here? Yes . . . it’s terrible when your knees won’t work. I know: I gotcha . . . there we are. Done. He just sets there looking at me from the other side of the car.

Anyway, wonder if I infected the old broad and if she’ll be dead in two weeks. Well, she won’t be dying with a broken hip on my watch.

      • Sean

Good on you for helping a stranger.

Curious, were you wearing a mask? Was she?

      • Don Escaped Australians

no: I didn’t even think such a thought until an hour later

      • Raven Nation

        Escaped Australians?

        What did I miss?

Damn, you’re pretty good at this.

  4. Ownbestenemy

Wonderful Yusef. Your scenes are so fun to explore

Is anyone else astonished at the media frenzy? First, Biden is credibly accused of sexual assault by a staffer who is retaliated against and his staff covers it up, and then General Flynn finally gets his hands on the smoking gun documents that prove that he was targeted for political reasons and set up to be prosecuted by an FBI and Justice Department hell bent on squeezing him into lying about Trump.

I mean, it is truly amazing that two stories of such magnitude have broken at the same time – I’ve never seen such a rabid press corps.

    • Lady Z

Yes, but somehow I’m not inured to it yet. The press is becoming more and more insulated and out of touch with the average American. They are tightening their own noose (I hope).

    • westernsloper

The media is a strange creature. I have been pondering if it has changed or maybe has always been the way it is now and they pick a thing and focus all their attention. For example. That was a link in this article that has made the rounds. Why is pandemic the focus of news now? Because we are not in a war bringing big casualties? Obviously we are in multiple wars at the moment but when was the last time the assholes reported on those?

    • Chipwooder

He wears tiny speedos and bangs models?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        I wish….

      • Crusty Juggler

Is Rod Stewart the gerbil or the stomach pump urban legend… I always get those mixed up.

      • Mojeaux

        Stomach pump.

      • Ted S.

        Richard Gere is the gerbil.

You’ve evoked a sense of the type of community we need.

Soon, we can all be back at our parks, or our jobs, and our hobbies.

I hope it really isn’t the last in a series.

  7. Mojeaux

Yusef, your talent never fails to amaze and delight me.

  8. Q Continuum

I discovered that due to Kung Flu my alma mater (U Arizona) is doing online virtual workout classes for the students for free; by alumni also have access.

Therefore, there is a cornucopia of aerobics videos taught by U of A coeds in skimpy outfits.

    I’ll be in my bunk.

  11. mikey

Hey, Yusef. This is fun. It makes me smile.

  12. Lackadaisical

great looking trashcans. I know that sounds weird, but they work perfect, Ithink I’ve even seen that color screens. do they have models of all that other stuff? like the barbecue?

    • AlmightyJB

Nicely done. I’m always impressed by your creativity.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Yes, they have a lot of different models available, I went on a tear once I decided on this project, then went, Bathrooms? Trashcans? Ducks? Dog walkers?

  13. LemonGrenade

This is pretty wonderful. It reminds me of the dioramas on display at Mesa Verde.

  15. Lackadaisical

stores were packed today, had to wait about 10 seconds outside the old home cheapo for capacity requirements.

everyone is wearing masks because the stores won’t let you in without one, but this is the first time I’ve seen so many people out.

a friend of mine had his family over for barbeque and a fire too. saw a few others breaking protocol in the neighborhood, no cops were called, or else they didn’t show up.

  16. Lady Z

Hey Yusef, I kind of love this. And your pond ripples are perfect.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I was hoping for a perfect resin pour, I really wanted a still water pond, but I agree, they look nice! Thank you

      • egould310

If the pond is still, it’s because there is no wind. If there is no wind, the kites won’t fly.

It was a fave of mine in the ol’ band. Often near the end of the night, if we hadn’t already done it, when Mr. GT would turn to me and ask, “Whatcha wanna do?” I’d call that one. (Shhhhh….don’t tell anybody, but at the risk of semi-doxxing myself, I found a vid of us doing it at our favorite venue that doesn’t suck too bad. Umm… I mean WE didn’t suck too bad on the song. The venue NEVER sucked.)

It’s interesting to see the talents that each of us have that put us in the 1% of one endeavour or another.

The talents y’all have, mine are rather limited.

    watching Columbo.

My dad used to love Columbo. We watched a bunch of them together, but I don’t remember anything like that… was bullying even a thing?

      Oh…. aahh…. just one more thing….

    • DrOtto

Is it Columbo from the late ’80s/early ’90s? Those were terrible.

    • Chipping Pioneer

      Dear Penthouse,

I never thought that this could happen to me…

    • Tres Cool

Whycome in the middle picture he has his front teeth, but in the others he’s missing them ?

      • Chipping Pioneer

        Hockey player.

      • Ted S.

        I noticed that too.

I assume hockey players have partials for the teeth they lost as opposed to implants, and he didn’t always have them in.

      • Chipping Pioneer

Some dumbass I went to high school with lost his top front four teeth — he was the towel boy and was hanging over the boards and took a stick to the face.

      • cyto

        Weird coincidence…

The episode of “Upload” that has the consent joke I was talking about in my other post also has a joke about this. One of the girls is looking at her friend’s matches on their version of Tinder and notes that her matches are not nearly so hot. She says she keeps getting bus boys and meth addicts.

Then she says “The last one worked out pretty good though. He was down for anything… and the lack of teeth worked out really well….”

      • Naptown Bill

Yeah, I heard somewhere the deal is they get partials or dentures while they’re still playing since they’ll probably lose the same ones again if they got them replaced. They wait until they retire to get implants so they only do it once.

      • cyto

        Facesitting accident.

    • cyto

I will say this …. many kids are not built to accept teaching from their parents. My kids are among that group. I am having to drag them by their hair toward basic literacy.

      • Mojeaux

And some parents (yours truly) cannot teach. It IS a skill and I do not have it.

      • cyto

        There’s definitely a skill component.

And in the classroom there’s definitely a talent component. Every now and then you’ll run into a teacher who has “it” in the class. The kids just do what she wants them to do… seemingly without effort. I’ve only seen a few, but it really makes me jealous when I see it.

My daughter’s first teacher was one. On the first preview night before school she had 18 kids and probably 30 parents in the room… plus siblings. She was able to control all of the kids, including younger siblings, all of the adults, make a 15 minute presentation about how her class was going to run to the adults, while simultaneously demonstrating with the kids…. it was astonishing. She didn’t look like she was even trying, and every kid and every adult was like a puppet on a string, doing her bidding without asking.

She was like a character from a Mojeaux novel… except one that she rejected as unrealistically overpowered.

      • LemonGrenade

It doesn’t help that at least in Virginia, the distance schooling is entirely optional. Gee… let the kids do their own thing because I’m working up to 80 hours a week, or try to add homeschooling into the mix for something that won’t even be counted as academic credit? I know which way I’m leaning.
I’ll make the kids do around thirty minutes a day (well, I’ll nag my husband into doing it) and then call it good. It was just fourth quarter – standardized testing, field trips, and a bunch of movies and other filler to round out the required ‘instructional hours’ for the year, anyway. I’m not worried that they’re missing anything. I do feel bad for seniors missing prom/graduation over this bullshit, though.

      • Mojeaux

        Everything is superlative in Mojeauxville!

  24. Mojeaux

Speaking of artistic endeavors, I would really like to publish Cods & Cuntes by the end of the month.

  25. cyto

I just saw a pretty good joke at the expense of consent culture.

The show “Upload” on Amazon is about a future society with super-high tech…. but an extension of today. So, two characters are about to hook up. They are making out hot and heavy, tearing off clothes and she says “did you bring protection?” He says “Yup!” and holds up a condom in a wrapper. She holds one up too.

They both rip the packages open and stick some little blinky-light patch to the center of their chest. She leans in to his and says “I consent to this”. He leans in to her patch and says “I consent to this”.

    LOL.

Way more than I expected out of Hollywood.

    • Ownbestenemy

Eh…I think it might be an eye of the beholder thing. That show is full of SJW, cancel culture and dirty deplorable thinking.

The consent thing, icky ild teligious beliefs, and the best….VAPE LUNG!

      • Ownbestenemy

        er…icky old religious beliefs

      • Ownbestenemy

Also a reference to a fictional Koch brother…and a man just wanting for everyone to experience the utopian ideals of the digital heaven without someone paying for it

      • cyto

I am 50 minutes in to the series… so I can’t comment. I was also watching while doing the dishes… It hasn’t really grabbed me yet.

But Amazon gave me Bosch, so I’ll give them a little rope….

      • Timeloose

I started watching Above the Loop on Amazon. It’s really a bit like stranger things meets the twilight zone meets Lost.

A lot of character development in each episode. Not bad.

The only annoyance is the dramatic piano music playing during the episodes.

      • Naptown Bill

Have you seen the newest season of Bosch? I’m watching it, but I’m getting a little frustrated with the Sovereign Citizen angle.

      • cyto

Yeah, I watched it. And yeah, I also found that a bit annoying. But it was all pretty much cut and paste, cardboard cutout villain stuff… so I eventually put it away. It was a bit weird though… having the “libertarians are all Nazi domestic terrorists” leftie trope come pushing through in the world of Bosch.

But I resolved it as “He hates pretty much everyone”, so I just let that fade into background noise.

That’s one of the things I love about the series. Bosch is an arrogant ass, and doesn’t apologize for it. He’s got a heart of gold… but he still has disdain for everyone. The trope would be that it is a rough exterior with a heart of gold… not him. He’s rough all the way through. He has a strong sense of justice, that’s all. Beyond that? Not so warm and fuzzy.

There’s not many protagonists who aren’t given a wink to the audience to let you know that you’re identifying with a good person. Every season there’s a moment where he goes to far, and there’s a conversation about that where an apology would go a long way toward smoothing over some animosity… and he doubles down instead of backing off – even when it wouldn’t cost him anything just to throw them a bone. It adds a lot of tension to the story, making things a lot more real and interesting.

But swinging it back around to the original point… Bosch as a gun control advocate is just…. no.

      • Ownbestenemy

Theychave some great shows and maybe Upload will develop past the three episodes I watched

      • cyto

Ok, I was just cleaning up after the day…. so I watched a couple more episodes while doing laundry, washing pots, etc.

You were right… some of the SJW and fake Koch stuff was a bit much. But I’ll give them this – I couldn’t tell if they were going for satire or signalling. Tough call.

They even had a trans actor doing an interview about the “alternative relationship” of dating a dead guy. It was so on the nose that it really argued that they were goofing on the SJW box-check… but then again….

Maybe that was good? Leaving me undecided like that… If it was on purpose, then it is pretty good.

      • Ownbestenemy

Yeah I think I need to go at least 5 deep. you could be right that it is VERY on the nose so could be self-deprecation?

I was just trying to find a new show and some of it was one struggle session after the next. Maybe this place made me jaded…or awake

  26. CPRM

Got my Trump Bux (TM) today. I was all set to hand it all over to newegg for my new PC build. Spent over an hour finding parts to replace the ones they chucked out of my shopping cart when they sold out. Ok, I was good to go check out. Then at check out the price was $200 more than the shopping cart balance (not the tax or shipping)! Gave up for the day and having beer. Come up with a new plan tomorrow.

    • Naptown Bill

Ours show up tomorrow. The plan is to split it between paying my uncle-in-law for a bathroom reno he did for us a while back and paying daycare, which has been shut down and could really use the money as they’re still paying their employees. We really don’t need it, but we’ll take it, and I figure if we can give it back to local people who aren’t getting a guaranteed paycheck AND do it in such a way as to avoid sales tax, we’ve put it to better use than it would otherwise go to.

With the SLD that it should never have wound up in the gubmint’s mitts to begin with.

    • Aus

I’d be curious to know what graphics card you’re planning on. My buddy indicated that he may want me to help him put a PC together. I think I have enough not-too-old components to put together a computer, minus a recent graphics card.

      • CPRM

I went with a XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX Edition 1386MHz OC+, 8GB. Never bought an XFX card before, hopefully they aren’t a crap manufacturer.

      • Aus

Nice, that should do well. Never bought XFX either. I look first for EVGA, if that brand isn’t available or at the right price, then I’m not picky on brand… until I get a bad one, then I tend to remember to avoid that brand.

      • Naptown Bill

Are you a Radeon guy? I got an RTX 2070 when I did my most recent upgrade because I wanted to get into the ray tracing bit, but I was looking at the equivalent Radeons. The past few have been Nvidia cards after I ran into issues with ATI’s drivers a ways back, but I hear they’ve solved a lot of those issues in the ensuing years.

      • CPRM

The driver issues crop up now and then, not so much the last 3 years. For a while some games were just unplayable on ATI (Arkham Knight, Assassin’s Creed Unity) but since then it’s been fine. For the price point and performance from this current build (just needs replacing after 8yrs and most of my issues are actually HDD related) I decided to give them another go.

      • commodious spittoon

Holding out hope for an RTX 3000 announcement this month… otherwise I might just… continue waiting.

    • CPRM

Decided to order off Amazon. New Egg lost a sale.

      • Naptown Bill

I swore by Newegg ten years ago. They started to fall off in service a while back, and now they’re really subpar in my experience. Amazon or Ebay has everything they have at better prices and faster and/or cheaper shipping.

      • Aus

Same here. Never really had bad service from NewEgg. But the faster/cheaper + the Amazon Prime credit card points lead me to Amazon. I usually check both and Amazon is always cheaper, especially after the Prime perks.

      • Naptown Bill

I’ve started getting a lot more stuff from Ebay lately. A neighbor of mine is making a concerted effort to wean himself away from Amazon, buying things from local brick-and-mortars where possible and then from independent sellers online, falling back to stuff like Walmart, Jet, or Ebay depending. I’m not quite there myself, but I have been diversifying away from Amazon on purpose. Which is ironic, as we use Fire TV pretty much exclusively for television and Kindle for 99.9% of books.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

Ive bought a few things off ebay recently and have been happy. Riding lawn mower, noise canceling headset, set of haircutting shears, aquarium plants, vacuum cleaner.

So far so good, and you can get some prices that can’t be beat.

      • UnCivilServant

That’s why I stopped selling on ebay, nobody was willing to pay prices that made it worthwhile after all the fees were taken by the middlemen.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

But the faster/cheaper + the Amazon Prime credit card points lead me to Amazon

FWIW- Ive had good luck with TigerDirect.

Its been a few years, but I was always happy with them. And they’re in the US.

      • CPRM

I too used to use Tigerdirect, but I went looking there and it is no longer what it was. I searched for a few components and only got back less than a full page of results.

      • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

I built a system for a friend about 5 years ago. They had the cheapest price on the video card I was going to use, but it was out f stock. I’m surprised it’s still around.

Different parts of the RF spectrum are used for 5g, so not just processing.

  39. Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

A late-night philosophy question–This has to do with (natural) rights and limitations. If you do a simple, cursory look, you will see many opiners saying that there are limits to our rights–presumably, any and all rights. This makes the authority in question the most powerful human force. By their reckoning, we are all subservient to some form of government, and our rights are really more permissions than anything self-owned. And, from what I’ve seen, this idea permeates the American society, with little regard for political sides. Yes, present company excluded.

Also, I have found that, when you own something, you want, or need, to use it. Sure you might buy an item based on a specific need you already have. But, human nature seems to be that people find reasons to use these things–to justify using them. We have a big military. Training is good, and necessary. But, what good is it if it’s never used? Police departments buy tasers. Then, you start seeing them used when, in the past, other items and methods sufficed, and with fewer problems.

So, do people who espouse the “rights have limits subject to governmental control” angle do so because they somehow believe that government has to be used? We go through the whole shebang every couple of years for various elected offices. But, other than take money, and deal with emergencies, what are we getting out of it? Telling ‘others’ what they can and can’t do seems to be the answer, unless you start adding in social services. Not that the controlling others aspect goes away then.

If this is the case–if these people are ultimately saying we have to be subservient to elected and appointed officials simply because we have those positions, how can we counter that? Can we? Are you as cynical as I am, and think that most people, when arriving at that conclusion, are probably OK with being essentially owned by their country’s government?

    • CPRM

    • Gustave Lytton

I don’t think they think of it as government needing to be used, but rather a balancing act between competing interests, who should be the arbiter, and government as an expression of collective society. The duck out is that they probably wouldn’t consider themselves to be property of the state, even if that is a potential logical conclusion. Try to argue that all laws, right down to parking violations, are backed up the implicit use of deadly force and you’ll get eye rolling and avoidance.

      • Gustave Lytton

Cognitive dissonance is a heck of a drug.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

Yeah–the competing interests thing makes plenty of sense. I think that opens up plenty of questions, too. And the understanding that isn’t always understood often gets turned back around on the mentioner–they wouldn’t use it, if you weren’t forcing them.

        Battered citizen syndrome, indeed.

      • Chafed

Plinker gets it. I’ll add they genuinely believe government is populated by people without prejudice or predisposition. The are motivated to do good. Therefore they don’t pose a threat.

Ask these same people what they think of Trump. As stated above, cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.

      • Plinker762

Belief in the competence of government experts makes me shake my head. More people need to experience time in the military

      • Ownbestenemy

What is amazing is every functioning adult experiences incompetence of Government all the time (DMV, SocialSec, etc) but compartmentalize it in their brains and can’t seem to understand that is just one of the rotten tentacles of the body.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

Whenever I hear anyone use something along the lines of, “What about all the people who need…?” I immediately think “if you know someone in need, and you are bothered by it, take care of it yourself!” So many people who claimed to be worried about others, but only to the extent of using the system that can destroy anyone/anything that defies it.

They want to think that whatever need they are promoting is being taken care of, while they themselves go about their lives. That way, they can pat themselves on the back for doing something, and maybe sleep better at night. Or, something like that.

        You know–real “caring”.

    • CPRM

I’m a minarchist, not an anarchist. I think there needs to be an agreed upon arbiter. But I also agree that the argument that was made against the US having a standing army does lend nicely to not having a standing government. So I get this line of thought. As long as they are there ‘they need to do something!’

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

Yeah, the “they need to do SOMETHING!!” thing. I think it’s a big part of a lot of people’s thinking; I just worded it a bit differently.

    • J. Frank Parnell

So, do people who espouse the “rights have limits subject to governmental control” angle do so because they somehow believe that government has to be used?

I think you’re putting too much thought into this.

Most peoples’ philosophical outlook on government is basically: The Government should do, subsidize, make mandatory, or otherwise promote stuff that’s “good” and ban or otherwise discourage stuff that’s “bad”.

That’s it. If exercising your rights leads to an outcome that they consider “good”, they’ll support it; if the outcome would be “bad”, they’ll oppose it. And it’s totally on a case-by-case basis; if you’re advocating for something “good”, then obviously your rights to free speech must not be violated, period. if you’re advocating for something “bad”, well, now your speech is harmful and must be weighed against the rights of others and basically you should be forced to shut up.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

I think you’re putting too much thought into this.

Oh, no doubt–I’m watching ostensibly liberty-leaning YT videos. So, yes; your take is elegantly simple.

    • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

I don’t think people see themselves as being “owned”. It’s about controlling other people, which I think stems from fear. They look around themselves and the world and see what they perceive as chaos. Government is just a tool they can use to control some of that chaos, even if that chaos doesn’t even effect them. I don’t believe it’s a left/right thing. My stepdad is a hardcore Republican and firmly believes in his right to own an AR. But, he shits his pants because the teenager across the street is selling weed. He has no problem locking him in a cage for selling some flowers in a baggy. If the legality of weed and firearms reversed, then he wouldn’t be ok with it, because now his rights are infringed upon., People want to restrict other people’s rights, until their rights are infringed upon.

I am cynical, not because people are happy to be government slaves. I’m cynical because people are infected with Gladys Kravitz Syndrome, and can’t mind their own fucking business. I think that infection is pretty widespread, unfortunately.

      Interesting question.

      • Ownbestenemy

Kinda what I was thinking. Most people want a return on their investment in terms of using government to push their perceived notion of the world onto others.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

If I bought it, it needs to be used.

      • CPRM

I know I’m a weirdo. But in terms like this it becomes all the more clear. I’ve never shot a gun, don’t want to; but I believe in the right to keep and bare arms. The strongest ‘illegal’ drug I did was pot, but not for over a decade and never really did care for it; but I think all drugs should be legal. I’ve actively been celibate and feel a marriage isn’t legitimate unless it is done as sacrament in the catholic church, but I don’t think the government should play any roll in people’s sex lives or marriages.

I’m just a big weirdo who judges you all silently, I don’t want to involve the government.
