The Night Shift for May 2, 2020

by | May 2, 2020 | Daily Links, Fun, Night Shift | 120 comments

Yeah, I missed out on all the Glibs talk this last weekend.  That said, if anyone in a position of governmental power in the US is keen on following timeframes they came up w—why are you laughing?  Oh, right.  Well, I’m still hopeful some of us will see businesses opening back up soon.  To that end, I don’t think I’m gonna have a lot merry, whimsical news to share, but, let’s get it on:

OK, I sort of find this whimsical.

Faygos up!  Realize this:  The Atlantic is now impressed with Juggalos.  Mmm-hmm…

Paging straffinrun (warning: music auto-play).  I can’t do any kind of drawing art, so, I find it online.  Check out his other vids, as he has a few examples of this devil’s trickery skill.

Here’s a little nighttime story for ya.  Just read up before you go to sleep.  Or, the doctor’s office…

You want a snow-boarding cat, you get a snow-boarding cat.  No, it’s pretty straight-forward.

The follow-up on that sand-in-the-playground crap I mentioned last week.  Yeah, it’s a bit old, but, you go, kids.

Got TrumpBucks?  Here’s a possible shopping list for you.

“We have to keep everybody safe.”   I guess those Amish should have just got a protective order—that should free the cops from this fakakta duty he’s claiming.

Oh, that Natty…  I bet you all remember your first naked, drunken funeral parlor romp, right?  (Note—I have never, ever been to NJ.)

Alright; I’m gonna quit while I’m ahead…  Breaking even.  OK, fine!–I’m just plain stopping here.  You can BYOM, if you require tunage.  I hope everyone is safe, healthy, and maintaining.  If not, I’m saying a little prayer for you, and will do what I can to help. Keep on keepin’ on.

    https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Popular_Science_Monthly/Volume_24/February_1884/The_New_Toryism

The truth is familiar that here, as elsewhere, it was habitually by town-populations, formed of workers and traders accustomed to co-operate under contract, that resistances were made to that coercive rule which characterizes co-operation under status. While conversely, support of co-operation under status, arising from, and adjusted to, chronic warfare, came from rural districts, originally peopled by military chiefs and their dependents, which retained the primitive ideas and traditions. Moreover, this contrast in political leanings, shown before Whig and Tory principles became clearly distinguished, continued to be shown afterward. At the period of the Revolution, “while the villages and smaller towns were monopolized by Tories, the larger cities, the manufacturing districts, and the ports of commerce, formed the strongholds of the Whigs”; and that, spite of exceptions, the like general relation still exists, needs no proving.

Except we see today that these larger cities today are those that acquiesce to coercive lockdowns and produce the elites that support these lockdowns. What happened?

Spencer by the way is also critical of the rise of public schools. The continental liberals were for the most part not so critical.

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-why-are-americans-trying-to-fight-the-war-against-covid-19-with-guns/

When it comes to guns, the rest of the world has long viewed the United States as being a little crazy.

Diversity, pluralism, tolerance and respect for minorities is great as long as they agree with me. And the “world” once thought America’s support for liberty was weird too. And this is the actual, existing, “cosmopolitanism” that we are supposed to love.

The “war” against COVID-19, belatedly declared by Mr. Trump, is not on the surface the same thing as racial resentment of minorities. But fear of lawlessness is fear of poor and desperate mobs, deprived of jobs and health care. It is fear of a war of all against all – or perhaps not quite all.

    • Gustave Lytton

They still think it’s weird, especially right now. And a large chunk of Americans also agree with that.

    • Chafed

    https://mises.org/wire/politicians-have-destroyed-markets-and-ignored-human-rights-alarming-enthusiasm

But the strongest pressure on governments probably comes from the media, in particular in the current times of pervasive internet and social media. Politicians are now constantly scrutinized and held responsible in a way that just a generation ago they were not. Further, mass media is prone to dramatize and exaggerate events, as this makes for better ratings, but also because journalists are not virologists. Mainstream media often tends to misinterpret and simplify the facts, inadvertently or not.

Fascinating as it was assumed that this “constant[] scrutiniz[ation]” and being “held responsible in a way that just a generation ago they were not” was supposed to force the politicians to become more libertarian instead of less libertarian.

That most Western governments have now decided to emulate the Chinese dictatorship in imposing a severe lockdown of society should be a wake-up call for those innocent souls who still think, even after the show trial of Julian Assange, that the West still protects individual freedom

I do find it interesting that both Mises and AIER, both entities that support trade with China, are acknowledging the uncomfortable fact that authoritarian is increasing when trade was supposed to decrease it in both China and at home.

Though the Western “liberal democratic” order was never really one except in name, it is clear that a decisive step has now been taken away from it.

Dang who woulda think a world order built by those great libertarians FDR and Joe Stalin and one that libertarians have railed about since it started is not really all that libertarian?

    • hayeksplosives

The belief that through trade, our western values of human rights and individualism will spread to China, Arab states, or any other place is naive. Those states will embrace human rights etc only when they are ready on their own accord.

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

This is true. I would think, though, that this would happen on a shorter time frame with some sort of trade of items people in those regimes want, as opposed to without it. Not that it has to be government-sponsored trade, per se, so much as people ‘here’ getting the wanted items to people ‘there’. Smuggled or “legit”.

      • Winston

This ties into another issue. It was assumed that Chinese merchants would be dependent on relations with Westerners to trade and would no longer dependent on cozy relations with the Chicoms in order to do business and earn wealth and in turn openly oppose the Party hence why trade would undermine the Chicoms. In addition it was assumed that these merchants would use their wealth earned in foreign trade to fund opposition parties, opposition think tanks, dissident artists, dissident intellectuals and human rights lawyers to defend these dissident artists and dissident intellectuals. Oh and it was assumed that once this happened then the Chicoms wouldn’t be able to anything about it since this would destroy the foreign trade that China now depends on which would further undermine them and lead to their eventual collapse.

      • Winston

A major issue is that it was assumed that educated urbanites must be libertarians. Trade with China was supposed to help facilitate China’s population shift from rural to urban and it was assumed that these educated urbanites would be opponents of the Party. Trade with China was supposed to make it more likely that China would eventually reach a critical mass of educated urbanites which would cause the Chicoms to surrender without a fight.

      • Winston

Not to mention that no one realized that the Chicoms control all the schools, universities and law schools so of course they want to ensure that all lawyers and educated people support them.

You stand there in your goddamned tweed jacket with the suede elbow patches, and tell the kids how my experiment in self-reliance was all just a sham. Then you angle your head just so, and say something snarky about “performative solitude” or “cabin porn.” And for the coup de grâce, you proclaim that I was never really alone at Walden Pond, because I had regular visitors.

Bitch, I disclosed my visitors — I wrote a whole damned chapter called “Visitors.” Can’t blame me if some debutante from Darien didn’t read it. And who’s entertaining visitors now? Not your quarantined ass.

    Breaking: America still hates chicks.

The United States women’s football team’s bid for equal pay has been dismissed by a court

But don’t worry, Gropin’ Joe’s on the case:

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for US president in this year’s election, told the team to not “give up this fight”, adding: “This is not over yet.

“To US Soccer: equal pay, now. Or else when I’m president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding.”

    “presumptive”
    lol.

    • mrfamous

Does Joe know how FIFA tends to respond from threats like this from governments around the world? They’ll happily play both the men’s and women’s World Cup without the United States. They’re mafiosos.

    • UnCivilServant

So, Joe wants the women’s team to take a pay cut?

      • Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

^This–They are running, scoring examples of the value of merit, and are pushing to do away with it, selfishly thinking they’ll benefit even more.

        Go play kick-ball in Cuba.

    • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

One thing I never see mentioned is, how much revenue does the men’s soccer team generate vs. the women’s?

The women’s case had been publicly supported by male players, and in February the US men’s team issued a statement criticising the governing body, saying that “the federation continues to discriminate against the women in their wages and working conditions”.

      How woke of them. *eyeroll*

      • mrfamous

The women claim they generate more than the men, but this is in the very narrowest sense. The women play more games and more at home, and the gates tend to be similar for the two so they bring in more gameday money, unless the opponent is a huge draw. The problem is that all of that revenue is chump change compared to what the Federation makes on Men’s World Cup TV rights, which is absolute bonkers money. Now, the federation makes that money mostly because of nothing to do with the actual US Men’s players, but the US now fielding a competent men’s team (which until very recently they were) certainly doesn’t hurt in that regard. The Women’s World Cup makes pennies comparatively.

The wild card here is that the players who play regularly for the men’s team make a shit-ton of money with their clubs anyway (Pulisic is getting Chelseabux for example), and so they can afford to be magnanimous about this. I do wonder just how united a front this is for the women, or how much of this is just Rapinoe and her cohorts steamrolling the rest into going along with them. Rapinoe’s actual playing ability is now of little use (has been for a bit), so who knows how this moves forward.

      • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

So, if I follow your post correctly, the men generate much more than the women, just like every other sport. I imagine if you examine the international level, the “gap” becomes even larger. The only reason this nonsense gets any traction at all, is due to soccer not being a major sport in America. Here, it’s a game played by children, especially girls.

Thanks for your response. That was a far more detailed explanation than I was expecting.

  24. Digby something something Unclothed Intruder

  27. l0b0t

I just got booted from a libertarian DerpBook group for arguing that impaired driving should not be a crime as there is no victim. I was lectured to by a 10 year veteran of the LA Libertarian Party and former board member. She was such a fucking state-fellating collectivist that I asked if she came over from Reason Magazine.

    • Grumbletarian

Firing a gun into a crowd of people shouldn’t be a crime unless someone gets shot?

      • l0b0t

Is it currently, or does it fall under some catch all like reckless endangerment? IIRC, in FL it was a violation of State code to discharge a firearm across a paved road, regardless of the presence of others. IDK, I’m not advocating impaired driving, I just think tort and insurance systems are sufficient to handle any damages that may occur and that there is no need for the state to put someone in a cage if there were no damages.

      • Grumbletarian

Reckless driving by itself incurs no damages, so I don’t know how tort and insurance come into play there.

Even as a libertarian I think there’s a place for the government to set out legal penalties for engaging in behavior that has a high likelihood of causing harm to others. And I recognize that even that statement has a ton of wiggle room. Driving isn’t a right, so losing one’s license for driving while impaired doesn’t strike me as unjust. The ‘locking in a cage’ part, I believe, generally is reserved for people repeatedly engaging in that behavior, even after their license to drive has been suspended. A person who makes a habit out of willfully disregarding the safety of others … well, I’m not going to shed too many tears if it gets progressively tougher for them to get behind the wheel of a car.

Having said that, I do think that there are plenty of instances where the law needs tweaking.

  28. l0b0t

The final straw (I think) was when I told her that life is very dangerous and ultimately fatal for everyone and absent an incentive to do so, mitigating risks for others is not my responsibility. Then I linked to “Surly only looks out for one guy. Surly.”

    • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

I’m ok with a law against drunk driving. But, I think it should be based on actually being drunk, like more than a 6 pack, not the .08 bullshit. I don’t buy the buzzed driving is drunk driving nonsense. It should be like it was back in the 1970s. Five drunks in a car, and you’re driving like shit. Cop pulls you over. Who’s most sober? You drive, Go the fuck home. End of srory.

      • Dry_Gin_Wet_Farts

End of story. I’m approaching my own limit. Cheers, Glibs!
