GlibFit 4.0 – Coronavirus Edition XI: Memorial Day Weekend

by | May 24, 2020 | Advice, Fitness, GlibFit | 251 comments

This is a tough week to write this column. Is it a column? An article?  Do I have a byline? I’m already confused. But I digress.

It’s Memorial Day weekend. In the before times I would have assumed most of you are away for the weekend, drinking way too much, and generally raising hell. In CoronaPanic™ times, I assume most of you are at home drinking way too much. Fitness advice just doesn’t seem like a good fit for this weekend.

What else is there to talk about on Memorial Day? Guns. No, ZARDOZ covered the gift of the gun Friday night. Beer. No, Mexican Sharpshooter did that yesterday.

How about the freedom we increasingly seem to be taking for granted? A number of us, including me, predicted violence if the lockdown wasn’t lifted by the weekend. We were wrong. I’m not advocating violence but I’m starting to wonder what it will take to get through to our betters.

Here in California there is a mixture of hope and fear that our ohsoenlightened governor is allowing some parts of the state to move into “accelerated phase 2.”   Governor “Please look at me I really want to be President” Newsom repeatedly claims he is being guided by “the science.” Top Men and all that I suppose.  I’m confused enough about the purported value of the various forms of coronavirus testing.  Then I read the CDC has been conflating antibody testing with virus testing making epidemiological results all but meaningless.  But I’m supposed to believe this is all being guided by science rather than his lust for authoritarian control or typical government incompetence.  Pull my other leg governor.

The people of Michigan are far more accommodating than I would have thought possible.  There have been more than a few stories about VP wannabe and current Governor Whitmer.  Her nonsensical order about which businesses to close has caused a lot of heartburn.  Karl Manke, a barber, told her to go pound sand.  Of course, the state tried to crush him.  It looks like Manke has had the last laugh when a judge refused to order him to shut down.  I’m sure it is mere coincidence she then extended the Michigan’s “Safer At Home” order to June 12. No doubt that’s what “the science” requires.

Of course, government protected the most vulnerable among us.  Governor Cuomo never ordered people infected with coronavirus to be placed in nursing homes.  He certainly didn’t deliberately undercount the number of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes.  Governor Newsom never did it.  Governor Murphy certainly didn’t do something that cruel.  These proponents of maximalist Karening did a great job of protecting the most vulnerable people in their states. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

The passivity of most of our fellow citizens is simply bewildering to me. I thank our Founders (and ZARDOZ) for the gift of the gun. History has taught (((me))) what happens to people who don’t fight back when threatened. Let me know in the comments what you believe it will take for the normies to understand they too are threatened.

Song 1 is video unavailable. Not a big fan, but they’re second album was better.

I’ve got a bit more hope right now. Indoor restaurants have come back, and although the crowds are light, I’ve yet to see a patron wearing a mask. People are pretty much done with the lockdown. There’s been parties in my neighborhood, and no cops rolled that I saw. People seem to be shying away from anyone wearing a mask (who’s not working, as mask wearing at work is mandated) like you would a dog you don’t know. If you’re under 60, and wearing a mask, from my observations, you rank right up there with the homeless guy muttering about Xenu. You don’t make eye contact, you give them a wide berth, and you don’t engage.

Several places haven’t opened back up yet (either because they’re not allowed, or they can’t make the financials work at reduced capacity). Gyms have been allowed to open since late last week (due to an injunction issued by a Lake County judge), but they’re scheduled to open on Tuesday. Big changes are they can’t fill your water bottles, and unless they’re shrink wrapping the towels, you have to bring your own.

I haven’t even cracked a beer yet today.

I’m glad Song 2 wasn’t what I thought it might be. I hate that song.

      • Toxteth O’Grady

Me too, and (bc?) I love Blur.

      • Rhywun

I love Blur too. Except for that song and one or two others.

        Nice.

If it matters, I like some Aretha too.

  2. Derpetologist

I finally got a chance to leave Campy Swampy. My goal was to buy some weights. Unfortunately, the exercise section of the sporting goods store was almost picked clean. I bought 2 of the last 4 dumbbells. Well, something is better than nothing. My plan is a daily routine of Super Arnolds (hammer curl, then overhead press, then palm-up chest fly, back to start).

I learned about 2 exotic exercises recently: the Hindu squat and the Hindu push-up. Supposedly, some Roman emperor thought it was the bee’s knees. The difference is you squat while on tiptoe and the push-up incorporates yoga-type flexes.

Did an 8 mile ruck yesterday with about 45 pounds. It gets easier every time. Was booze free for 3 days of the past week, so still working on that. I try to remember that if I stopped or even cut back 90%, I’d lose 20 pounds and wouldn’t have to spend so many hours on the treadmill or the trail. My goal is to adjust my diet to my preferred activity level, which is 20 minutes of running and 20 minutes of strength training per day.

Was at neighborhood pool today. There are some minor rule tweaks for covid that everyone ignored.

Had dinner on Sullivan’s Island last night, all the restaurants were packed.

“Governor “Please look at me I really want to be President” Newsom“

Please God no, the guy looks like the unholy spawn of a sleazy used car salesman and a televangelist.

    • Chafed

Bingo! Give this man a beer.

    • BakedPenguin

Plus, what kind of American is named Gavin? With a name like that, he should be trying for Prime Minister or Chancellor or something.

When I hear “Gavin”, the only thing I think of is the Bruce McCollough character from ,em>Kids in the Hall.

      • Toxteth O’Grady

“In England, everyone only has one spoon.”

        I mith KITH.

      • hayeksplosives

I read that there is a recent trend in naming boys more “soft” or “feminine” names. They gave names ending in “-an, -en, or -in” sounds as examples of softer, less aggressive names, like Gavin, Aiden, etc. Supposedly the names are being selected more by a single mom, so no Dad input on names.

      • blackjack

That would explain the manbuns and all of that, or visa-versa?

  5. LemonGrenade

I made my first actual run to a grocery store since this lockdown nonsense started (husband has been going for me) and it was downright nuts. Something like 80% or more of the shoppers were wearing masks of some sort, with probably half of them sagging below their noses. I wouldn’t say people were exactly giving us the stink-eye for not being masked, but I was really surprised to see that many people had succumbed to the panic. It depressed me. I liked it better when I hadn’t seen the madness up close.

    • Nephilium

I noticed that the people who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) follow the one way signs in the aisles were always masked. They kept giving me dirty looks… I just pointed at the tape arrows and the one way signs hung up.

      • Suthenboy

        Ok Karen.

      • Ted S.

Now if the shoppers could respect the “Express Self Checkout” signs, which should have the same 14 item limit as regular express checkout.

      • Suthenboy

Ok, now that one does piss me off. I hate those people.

Through all of this my behavior hasn’t changed one bit. I paid no attention to this lockdown theater. It is a power-grab plain and simple. I will not participate in it.

      • Q Continuum

“Through all of this my behavior hasn’t changed one bit. I paid no attention to this lockdown theater. It is a power-grab plain and simple. I will not participate in it.”

#metoo. I do not wear a mask anywhere (except in and out of the building at work, senior leadership has said we have to, but my immediate boss DGAF, so I wear it while walking in, then take it off all day, and wear it back out), my “social distancing” consists of not invading people’s personal space, which I didn’t do anyway and I still wash my hands, again which I did regularly before.

It’s all just performing sympathetic magic to make the plague gods happy.

      • LemonGrenade

I don’t even have any masks and have resisted buying a bandanna or something ‘just in case’. Of the friends I have who haven’t succumbed to panic, we behave like always. The rest, I haven’t seen since this began. Doing my best to pretend things are as normal as I can or I really will just go crazy.

      • DEG

I have a bandanna for times when I need a mask but don’t want to malicious about it. Some places here in NH require it, either because of the Clown Prince’s rules or on their own, in order to enter.

I bought a plague doctor mask in preparation for the Clown Prince mandated mask use everywhere like in some other states. It hasn’t happened yet.

      • Tres Cool

The only time Ive worn a mask was when my VA f’d-up shipping meds to me, and I had to make an appearance at the hospital pharmacy. To be fair, even in non-pandemic times, a mask in that place it probably advisable. I wear contacts and dip tobacco, so Ive always been pretty OCD about clean hands anywhere near my face.

      • Plinker762

I’ve seen very little mask wearing up here in NE WA. Went to Lowes and a couple of customers wearing them. The staff were wearing them in various levels of effectiveness. From over nose and mouth to around their neck.

      • The Hyperbole

And just like that we have the male equivalent of Karen, OK Ted.

      • Chafed

I noticed the same thing Neph. It’s funny how only some rules are important.

      • Toxteth O’Grady

        “South to drop off, moron!”

    • Suthenboy

Around here traffic has returned to normal, shopping normal but I do see a lot of masks. I would estimate one person per hundred are wearing them properly.
I don’t see the panicky looks I saw for a brief time. People seem calmer and back to the usual friendly.

Oddly, the toilet paper is wiped out again but eggs, milk, flour etc. is available.

      • Nephilium

Strangely, it’s salads they keep running low/out of here. Ground beef has moved down to 75% lean instead of 80%. There’s some unusual brands coming in (which I’m guessing were regional ones that were diverted here). The deli and butcher counter are usually unstaffed in the grocery store, so nothing custom.

      • Suthenboy

As far as I could tell this morning inventory was back to normal…except the toilet paper.
I still don’t know what that is all about.

Because I have been iced in so many times and hurricaned out so many times I keep enough supplies that I could be accurately called a semi-prepper. Toilet paper was never on my list of things to stock.
Food, medicine, ammo, water filters, batteries, gasoline…..well, you know, standard essentials. Toilet paper? Never crossed my mind.

      • Chafed

My local Costco still doesn’t have TP.

      • C. Anacreon

Our local Safeway in our little Bay Area suburb finally had a bunch of toilet paper, but it was all single-ply “Kleenex” brand, I’ve never seen that before. And the label was 100% in Spanish. Are the cartels giving up drugs and profiting off smuggling in bootleg tp?

      • Chafed

        I’m starting to wonder.

      • Ted S.

Our deli counter is open again, but when I went a week and a half ago, they didn’t have liverwurst.

The dairy section didn’t have the big containers of ricotta, either. And nobody has Minute Rice.

      • Crusty Juggler

        I call it liverbest.

      • C. Anacreon

It was the best of liver, it was the wurst of liver…..

      • LemonGrenade

Yeah, most of the mask wearing appeared to be just symbolic, “look, I’m being safe!” rather than from actual concern.

      • Derpetologist

It’s the hygiene equivalent of virtual signalling.

      • Derpetologist

        virtue signalling, that is

    • egould310

I wear a Buff now when I go out. I only wear it if the store has a sign on the front door asking for masks to be worn. My local coffee shop has a sign on the door, so I wear it there. If it’s important to them, I will respect their request. Otherwise, no mask.

    • hayeksplosives

“I was really surprised to see that many people had succumbed to the panic. It depressed me.”

Yup, that’s been a disappointment to me. There are so many Karens who are enjoying their new “mission” as tattle-tales, and their natural tendency is to embrace drama, so this Killer Virus is like crack cocaine for them. So many opportunities to show how much more they care about the vulnerable!

None of these people has any clue what giving up freedom really means.

      • C. Anacreon

“Freedom’s just another word the virus steals from you..”

      • RAHeinlein

“nothing – that’s all the virus left me”

And it felt just like a ball and chain? Wrong song, nevermind.

  6. Suthenboy

As I have pointed out before there is no uprising because people have too much to lose. Families, homes , careers and savings. Wars are incredibly destructive. If this continues that will change, I am just not. sure those in power can see that.

    • Sean

I disagree. We did see uprisings. Mass civil disobedience rallies and businesses publicly flouting the goverment. It was kept mostly polite, but the threat of violence was put on display. I think the pressure applied accelerated the time tables.* The commie fucksticks would have gleefully kept the charade going.

We have local businesses that reopened, but they are keeping it on the downlow.

*Does not apply to the cunte in MI.

      • Suthenboy

You are correct. I should have said gunfire and hangings, not uprisings.

What else is there to talk about on Memorial Day? Guns. No, ZARDOZ covered the gift of the gun Friday night

I’m in the lead for a case of GP-11 on GunBroker. I’m also browsing porn… err… GunBroker on the side.

The passivity of most of our fellow citizens is simply bewildering to me.

There is defiance out there. I posted earlier today about the race track in NH that held a race in defiance of the Clown Prince’s orders. Karl Manke, whom you mention, featured prominently in the Michigan Conservative Coalition’s “Operation Haircut”. I thought the Michigan Conservative Coalition had another event of civil disobedience planned but a couple quick searches, even checking their web page, turn up nothing. Sunday River Brewing in Maine opened up in defiance. There is more out there.

Despite that there is defiance out there, I’m saddened there isn’t more.

    Your first video is unavailable.

For GlibFit, well, I screwed the pooch over the last week or so. I didn’t do much exercise beyond some walking and some light kettlebell swings. They don’t bother me, but I think if I talked to my PT she’d say it is too soon to go back to them. I also scarfed down over the last two weekends lots of doughnuts from Sunday River Brewing.

The Clown Prince has graciously and magnanimously deigned to reopen gyms on June 1st but only for small group classes and personal training. I have received no word yet from my gym about what they plan to do.

    • Plinker762

DEG, I like your reporting on the resistance in NH. Your trip to Bethel was interesting because I grew up in Shelburne. I still have family there. I went through the Birches everyday on my way to and from school. They were more impressive about 35 years ago. Birches are not final growth in that area so were being replaced by conifers.

      • DEG

I’m glad you like the reporting. Whenever Reopen NH storms the beaches I plan to be there.

I drove through the birches yesterday to go to Sunday River Brewing. A week made a hell of a difference up north. The trees have leaves. The leaves aren’t fully grown, but the trees are green again.

Birches, if I remember correctly, are a pioneer species so always eventually get replaced. I like birches. I thought about putting in a stand of different types of birches in my yard but I think I need to remove some oaks to make more room for such a thing.

      • Plinker762

        Cut areas would go from brambles – Alders/Willows – Poplars – Birch – Maples/oaks – Pines

Just don’t plant Aspen, they spread everywhere.

      • DEG

Ahh… I thought birch were earlier than that.

      • DEG

Oh, and if you are back up visiting, let me know. I’m touch with some folks from the H&R days. We can set up a meet-up.

      • Plinker762

I was supposed to make a trip back home early this spring. Maybe I will do it this July instead. My dad is 92 a haven’t seen him in awhile.

I am disappointed that the churches have not revolted. It may not be fair of me to judge since I’m a non-church goer but they need to open up. Even if parishioners stay home, pasters/ministers should open the doors and hold services.

    • Ted S.

Weren’t they opening up this weekend?

      • hayeksplosives

A few are, with restrictions. Some are allowing drive-in service where you park on the lawn and stay in the car.

Some, like Walz in Minnesota, say no more than 10 attendees.

That’s 10 people tops, regardless of whether the church holds 150 people or 2000. Very silly. And no singing!

It’s so anti-church, i suspect it is a trial balloon to see how hard we are “clinging to our religion”. They want church =/= essential in people’s minds.

      • BakedPenguin

“Some, like Walz in Minnesota, say no more than 10 attendees.”

And lawsuits. But make people sign a waiver or just put up a huge sign–if you enter here you accept the risk.

      • Suthenboy

My son was going to do that and dare them to arrest him…then he had a talk with the big cheeses at a huge company contracting him. He has an opportunity of a lifetime with them and they advised that his own private business would seriously affect them so he laid off. It was the right decision.

      • blackjack

That’s why I submit to the mask madness only when entering businesses. The state charges them with crimes if they let me not wear one. I completely ignore the new law about wearing them whenever leaving the house, though.

        That’s the scary part.

A pastor in Worcestor, MA had services in defiance of Gauleiter Baker’s orders. I read some Minnesoda churches will reopen whether or not Gauleiter Walz approves. I forget the date they planned to reopen. The last Reopen NH rally was a Christian service held outdoors and in defiance of the Clown Prince’s orders.

So, some churches are defying the orders. Not enough in my opinion but they are out there.

      • salted earth

A lot of churches have a huge bureaucratic structure. That means a lot of people in leadership positions (including spiritual leadership) are unwilling to stand up for the rights of those they are supposed to be “shepherding.”

      • hayeksplosives

I think churches (and similar) will need to start paying taxes and give up other financial protections in order to be free enough to tell the gov’t to butt out while maintaining credibility.

      • DEG

        Yep.

As far as I know, Catholic churches in NH are still closed in compliance with the Clown Prince’s orders.

    • Urthona

I went to Catholic church today with the extended family. i’m not religious but my family is.

They said wear a mask but many weren’t. During communion, you had to use hand sanitizer and it was just the bread part.

No holding hands or shaking hands.

      Otherwise the same.

I’ve been told the Catholic church is no longer complying with shutdowns anywhere in the country and that’s the US’s biggest religion. They’re done though.

I am not impressed with the current leadership.

I am sure legal challenges will start rolling in because large venues such a casinos are open or opening whild churches are being held back. That seems targeted. Either you can congregate or you cannot.

Also, started running again this week. Long walks too. Keto carb friendly. Though I did drink beer this weekend. Switching to vodka now.

    • BakedPenguin

That is a pretty cool shirt. I saw CoC open for the Ramones in ’88 or so. Lost my shirt to the mists of time. Still have the one from seeing the DK’s in 2002, with the European tour dates on the back.

      • egould310

Where’d you see that Ramones show? When I saw Ramones in 88 it was J.O.T. (Indianapolis locals) , Zero Boys (Indianapolis legends), the Dickies, and the Ramones. The Ramones started by blasting through the first two albums, playing everything except “53rd & 3rd”. Great concert. Got drunk at a Mexican restaurant in Broad Ripple before the show. I was only 18, but the bartender had kind of a “fuck it, why not?” attitude.

      • BakedPenguin

        I think it was here.

      • C. Anacreon

I think it was 1988, the Warfield in San Francisco had a show with the Ramones, Blondie, and Tom Tom Club. What a blazing show! With an excellent mosh pit right in front of the stage. The local newspaper music critic, though, sniffed the bands were “dinosaurs” and couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to attend.

Sheeple have always been sheeple. I wore a bandanna for a while but that’s out. The grocery store is the only place there’s noticeable compliance, except for the one way aisles. I do like the fact that just about everybody I talked to who was wearing a mask would shake their heads about how stupid this whole thing is.

    • AlmightyJB

My wife went to two different grocery stores Friday. Giant Eagle most people had masks. Kroger’s most people did not. Probably more neighborhood driven than store driven. We don’t wear masks. Not partaking in the charade.

    • l0b0t

I find it SHOCKING that there is far more masking now here in NYC than there has been since March. Stores are being aggressive about it, Karens are calling me out for not participating. I’m trying very hard to remain calm when out and about. I always try to be obsequiously polite to strangers; ya never know what kind of day someone is having and I don’t want to make anyone’s worse. However, the next person who scolds me might get an earful.

  15. Gustave Lytton

Almost back to normal around here. Not too long before people are once again spitting in public, leaving restrooms without washing their hands, and coughing and sneezing without even an attempt to cover it. God bless America!

  16. kinnath

Went to Target for groceries yesterday. Half the people mask; half didn’t.

After having TP for about three weeks, Target was wiped out again. Really weird since the Guv is opening the state back up.

    • AlmightyJB

Yeah my wife said the same thing about the grocery stores. We had charman, then we didn’t

    • BakedPenguin

Fourth or eighth or whatever on the TP. Never had a shortage until last week or so. I bought a package about once a week in February, still going through that.

  17. JaimeRoberto Delecto

Rode about 85 miles during the week and hiked for a few miles today. Lots of hikers wearing masks. I’m not anti mask, but wearing them outside seems silly.

Next week is the Dirty Kanzelled bike ride, which is a DIY substitute for the Dirty Kanza race in Kansas. You can do either 100 or 200 miles on as much gravel as possible. I’m on the fence about doing it. I’ve picked out a good 100 mile route, but I’m not sure if I want to ride 7 or 8 hours by myself.

    • Mojeaux

Question: How long would it take your horse to go five miles at a trot or mixed canter/run/walk?

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

        Horse? I’m talking about bikes.

      • Mojeaux

        My bad! Sorry!

      • Don Escaped Australians

        half hour

A thoroughbred can post at 10MPH no problem for hours. When you say five miles, it all depends on the urgency, because they can handle that with no break; an easy gallop takes that out in 20 minutes with a few minutes at slower gaits mixed in.

The hotter and the more humid, the harder all that would be. Galloping with me on board is easy by not a delight; I’ve never ridden more than two miles hard and can’t say I’m an expert, but in my country my thinking is posting trot all day and stop at every water that comes up to let them take as much time as they want. Someone who hasn’t escaped Texas can speak for the West, but horses are from the steppe: they’re tough critters from tough turf.

I presume that missiles aren’t in play if you’re asking about easy gaits.

      • Mojeaux

        Thank you! Very helpful.

Heroine’s riding a restless horse who wants to run to her nearest village. Dirt road. I’m not detail-oriented enough to care about what condition the road is in.

So then she continues on another 15 miles to the major town, but now she’s just trotting along enjoying the day.

      • JaimeRoberto Delecto

I guess the story wouldn’t be as sexy if she were riding a bike.

HI Chafed, Thanks for the write up. I am in the same place as you mentally and in the same state as you in Cali. I kind of expected the lock-down compliance here since Cali has the most insecure populous in the country, with huge numbers of migrants. I am just surprised that people that make their money in the private sector do not realize they are effed, some in short term, some in long term, in aggregate most will suffer. I guess, there is not much difference between tax cattle and government slave for some. Oh well..the weather is nice.

Here there was so much regulatory creep the last 25 yrs. Case in point, I ordered a trickle charger for use in the garage. I thought it made sense to have a fire/smoke detector for something like this that was plugged in for some time. I found what was suitable (cheap) at Amazon, but they wouldn’t deliver since there is some law here that smoke detectors can not be shipped in Cali. So instead of having any detection…I have none; unless I go to the hardware store. AND don’t get me started about low flow water fixtures.

It’s been a slow but steady reg creep here and now the pot has been turned up and most people are too comfortable/scared/paranoid to jump. Oh well..the weather is nice.

    • Suthenboy

      “…low flow water fixtures…”

They have a choke in them. Before installing pop the choke out. Most are very easy…just a plastic disk with a small hole in the center. I do. My toilets refill in less than a minute and my shower is a shower, not an elf hanging on the wall pissing on me.

    • blackjack

The creep has seemed fast and furious to me. It’s only been about 20 years since we were reasonably sane here.

      • Suthenboy

California was heaven in the ’60s and ’70s.

The weather *is* nice. And there are some industries centered here offering career opportunities not available in states that otherwise have a lot going for them.

So in San Diego I remain, for DoD work and the lovely setting.

When it’s time to pay the piper for all the free stuff, stimulus money, pensions, etc, THAT’s when it will get really interesting in Cali.

      • Chafed

Given the blow to the state’s finances, that day is coming sooner than expected.

  19. ttyrant

Somewhat on topic – I learned this week my jiu jitsu place wont be coming back. My guess is not enough people agreed to let the owner continue charging monthly. I don’t necessarily begrudge them that, but it sucks nonetheless – that place has been my nightly refuge since I I moved up to Saint Paul last year.

Given that I usually don’t have much nice to say about the powers-that-be up here in Minnesota, I will say that the new turf fields they’ve installed at Comp Park are boss. I ran on them this morning – four 200m sprints, and two 100m. I’m soar as hell but I think my knees and joints will be much happier tomorrow than usual.

      • ttyrant

I have to imagine as an industry, martial arts will in the long run be fine, but there’s gonna be more than a few that don’t make it through this. It’s like pizza I agree. But even if a 1/10 on the sex scale is still fun, a 2/10 sexual encounter is inferior to a 10/10 bowel movement.

Honest answer, as somebody who thought we’d be seeing pot shots at city hall by now? I think it’s the economy, stupid. I’m downright shocked that everybody is maintaining the “wait and see” mentality for this long. The psychology of the market is beating the fundamentals for a much longer time than I expected.

Frankly, even with the economy still in “wait and see” mode, I expected more than a handful of ineffective protests. It really makes me recalculate my view of my fellow Americans, and not for the better

    • Suthenboy

How old are you? Stick around. You will see.

Get used to it brother. People are going to be disappointing you for the rest of your life.
Remember, the American Revolution was pulled off by only 3% of the population.

*Also keep in mind that this country is the best in the world.

      • IRBE

I think “the game has changed”. I was always worried about the emergence of a techno-state, with full time grifters having access/control privileges. I thought I had a good handle about how to manage my way but I am less confident now that I see what appears to be happening. At this point, I may be happy if I can make it through the next pandemic without getting my ass kicked by a 20yr old boxer that is shipped to my rest home for viral convalescence.

    • IRBE

I am surprised the markets have held up so well. I think inflation has been built in. Things are going to be more turbulent in the future, with wild swings for no apparent reason. If you have cash there will be some buying opportunities. I worry China (has lot of cash) is going to go on a buying spree for distress companies and the result will not be as pleasant as when Japan did same in the 80’s.

      • Suthenboy

The Japanese wanted to make money. I don’t think that is what China has in mind.

      • IRBE

I agree. Their motives are different and they use our “liberal” systems to their advantage. Perhaps the only savings we will have from them is our predatory political class.

      • Nephilium

I’m sitting on cash, and I’ve been shifting it slowly into ETF’s as things play out. I don’t know if that’s the right play or not, but I have more then enough in cash at the bank that I feel like I should be doing something instead of banking on the anemic savings account interest rates.

      • IRBE

Timing is everything..except if you talk to a financial planner who said you can’t time the market. Case in point: I funded a 529 for my kids uni education. Over the course of 14 yrs, the rate of return was about 3% annual. These were age appropriate index funds. 2008-09 came along and the fund lost 30% and then gained over the next decade. Don’t tell me timing doesn’t matter. Anyway, I remember you could get 3% return on pass-book saving account. Game changed and now you lose money 3%-6% in that account due to fees and inflation

      • prolefeed

After the stock market recovered somewhat, I shifted enough money out to pay the whopping IRS bill coming due and the property tax bill coming due on our primary residence. Other than that, I’m just riding it out leaving it invested.

Dunno if that is smart or stupid, but trying to figure out the herd market psychology is hard.

      • Nephilium

I’m just shifting in some each week. Hoping to flatten the curve some using dollar cost averaging.

    • kinnath

The 600/week Fed unemployment payout runs through the end of July. A lot of people are better off not working at this point. This will not last. And there won’t be jobs to go back to.

      • Suthenboy

I am not convinced that that is not the plan.

      • Nephilium

I keep seeing reports how it’s unfair to expect people to go back to work or lose their unemployment and Fed Bonus pay. I can understand the arguments for those who are at-risk, but for the vast majority of people, it just pisses me off.

      • Suthenboy

Permanently destroying tens of millions of people’s jobs and their incentive to work while giving them handouts looks an awful lot like something we call ‘communism’.

      • hayeksplosives

Yup, I agree that it’s by design.

Remember how Obama boasted about record high numbers of people on welfare or other Fed assistance programs? I couldn’t believe people considered that to be a GOOD thing.

It’s odd; there are many people who won’t accept a favor without paying it back because they don’t wan’t to “owe” anybody or be beholden to them in some way.

Why people who see and avoid that debt within their circle of acquaintances can’t see it with the Fed Gov, is beyond me.

    • Don Escaped Australians

some of that might be demographics and inclinations

The violence would come from men.
a/ responsible men usually don’t fall apart: they’re not so inclined and baby’s gotta have shoes whether you get yourself blowed away by cops or not
b/ irresponsible men aren’t affected much: they’re still lying on mama’s couch or interwebbing in the basement

as I like to say, I don’t think the politics much moves the needle

Red meats are scarcely stocked here, but could be the individual store. Some are running 2.99/lb briskets (I am guessing point cut) so makes no sense on actual inventory. Could of course be the holiday weekend driving those prices.

TP is still a hit/miss however there is alwats single rolls in stock. So could get that in a pinch.

Gyms are still locked down though one guy did define Sisolak and tried to open here in Vegas and even held CrissFit classes outside.

Generally I haven’t heard of anyone call out for not wearing a mask in meat space. Typically its Keyboard Karens on Nextdoor or Facebook whining and bitching but are really hammered in responses.

Biggest fear is when schools open up the final solution ti creating little government citizens will occur. Already taught not to think and now they can institute some draconian measure and make them all perfect little drones.

  23. prolefeed

The vast majority of the people in the stores near me wear masks, because the mayor of Austin and the Travis county council ordered it. I’ve said fuck it, make me. Walk right past all the signs saying it is mandatory. No one says anything.

Exceptions: Costco had people at the door insisted I had to wear a mask to get inside, and gave me a mask after I said I didn’t have one. So I put it on, walked in, took it off about 15 seconds later. No one said anything after that, including people at checkout.

Wingstop employees were hollering at me to put on a mask. I would have walked out, but already paid online. Said I didn’t have a mask. They told me to pull my shirt up to my nose. Less than a minute later I pulled it down to verify the order with the clerk, left with my food. Not going back there.

The most vocal person about the masks is my wife. She just doesn’t get how offensive wearing one is to me. Other than that we’re getting along great.

  24. prolefeed

Work out today consisted of going to one of the houses under construction near me, grabbing the heaviest rocks I could lift out of the construction rubble pile, and wheeling them in my little green wagon to the walking trail I and several other people in the neighborhood are prettying up. ‘Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence’

Forcing the sick into nursing homes after these governors have been raving about how bad this disease and forcing everyone else into house arrest is is not incompetence.
I am confident calling it deliberately culling the herd.

      • prolefeed

For someone who posted upthread to get used to people disappointing one constantly, you seem to be underestimating the ability of politicians to be incompetent at anything but winning popularity contests. With the perverted incentives that accompany such a short list of job requirements.

Shorter: why can’t it be both incompetent and power mad?

      • Suthenboy

With a lot of it I buy incompetence but the nursing home move is too obviously malice. That isn’t to say they arent also stupid, but there was definitely malice.

Authoritarians have always dreamed of being able to get rid of the people not useful to them. The old are unproductive and require expensive medical care. A big part of Obamacare was rationing so that the dead weight would be shed. The NHS is quite open about it.

      • kbolino

The only realistic financial incentive New York or any other state would have to do such a thing is to reduce the number of former state employees collecting pensions. However, those are also reliable voters so killing them off is ultimately counterproductive. It is the private payer and the U.S. government that foots the vast majority of the healthcare bill, especially for the elderly. Cuomo has about as much incentive to kill off the elderly as he has to go to war with Croatia.

This was every blue state governor’s big chance to step into the limelight, show initiative, and take decisive action. The only thing any of them “knew” however was that Northern Italy’s hospitals (allegedly) got overwhelmed. So they made a lot of rash decisions for the sole purpose of keeping the hospitals empty. As it turns out, and rather predictably, that was not the only or even best priority for decision-making, but that is the problem with letting the media lead. They are even stupider than policitians.

This was attention seeking, politicking, and mindless opposition to the Trump-that-lives-in-their-heads, and for that reason it is evil, but it was not an intentional culling.

      • BakedPenguin

I know this is way off topic, but I have a problem. Are there any wood-working Glibs that have any good plans for a free standing rifle rack that is able to hold around 50-60 rifles (some scoped, some bolt, some lever) and shotguns (almost all single barreled) in a space around 38″ wide x 75″ long, that could be done somewhat cheaply and without an expert level proficiency? The beach was absolutely heaving with people. Came back home and grilled up burgers for a late lunch, fed the deli workers from across the street who often give me a free sample of new beer that they are thinking of stocking. Went back to grab the plate and the owner gave me an awesome chicken taco that they had a huge plate of. So we chatted away with some of the locals. My neighborhood has become even more popular as we are a block from the park and a few from the beach. The store owner said he has never done such good business. Now trying to digest all the food while the wife takes a nap and the kids get some screen time. Gonna take out the bow in an hour or so and hit the archery field nearby. Next two weekends I will be up in the Sierras fishing and visiting a friend who moved there. It almost feels like normal, but it isn’t yet.
